Lore: The Astrology and Divination 42 of the Empty Sky was conceived by a master astrologer named Selenn, who suffered from an immense feeling of absence in her life. Intrigued by the celestial bodies that occasionally disappeared from the sky, Selenn channeled her sense of emptiness and the mysteries of missing celestial patterns into creating this unique item. The orb contains an elusive star that fades in and out of existence within its magical enclosure. Selenn encoded the orb with divinatory spells that resonate with the essence of absence, making the orb a conduit for understanding what is missing, be it objects or information.
Stats:
- Type: Orb

- Rarity: Common

Roleplay: This item is perfect for characters who harbor a sense of absence or loss in their life, either due to missing a loved one, feeling out of place, or having lost an item or opportunity. The orb subtly pulses when something vital is missing in the immediate environment, serving as a roleplay device for characters to act upon. When held, the character feels a tingling sensation pointing them in the direction of what’s absent, though not precisely identifying it.
Costs
- Purchase: 50 gold pieces
- Maintenance: Requires a 1-hour meditation under a starry sky once a week to recalibrate its magic.
Magics
- Absentia Vision: Once per day, as an action, the user may peer into the orb to reveal what is missing in a given situation. This could be a clue in a room, a trap in a dungeon, or even an ally’s absence in battle.
- Celestial Shift: As a reaction, once per day, the orb allows the user to become ethereal (absent from the plane) for a single turn, avoiding a single attack or effect targeting them.

Defense and Offense in Different Environments
- Defense:
- In a dungeon, the orb can identify missing floor stones that signify a trap.
- In social settings, the orb can sense the absence of truth, alerting the user to lies or deceit.
- On the battlefield, activating Celestial Shift can make the user absent from the plane, evading an attack.
- Offense:
- In a treasure hunt, Absentia Vision could reveal the absence of a hidden compartment or loot.
- In combat, sensing the absence of an enemy can offer the advantage of surprise, allowing a pre-emptive strike.
This item provides characters with a sense of direction for the inexplicable voids in their environment, allowing them to act more decisively. It is as much a tool for existential exploration as it is for practical advantage.

Recipe: How it is Made
- Ingredients
- 1 Obsidian Sphere (5 inches in diameter)
- Starlight Essence (extracted from 7 different stars)
- 3 Moonstone Crystals
- Absentia Herb (a rare herb known for its vanishing properties)
- Ink made from Celestial Squid
- Steps
- Celestial Alignment: Place the Obsidian Sphere under a clear night sky and let it soak up starlight for seven consecutive nights.
- Starlight Infusion: On the eighth night, crush the Moonstone Crystals into a fine powder and mix it with Starlight Essence.
- Herb Imbuement: Grind the Absentia Herb into a paste and inscribe symbols of absence and divination on the Obsidian Sphere using the paste.
- Ink Inscriptions: Using a quill, write ancient astrological signs using the Celestial Squid ink all over the sphere.
- Concentration Phase: Hold the sphere and meditate, focusing on the concept of absence, for exactly 42 minutes.
- Activation: Chant an incantation that activates the orb, bestowing it with the magic of Astrology and Divination.
- Calibration: Finally, the orb must be synced with the user’s essence. Hold the orb in both hands and concentrate on your sense of absence, linking it to the orb’s magic.
After the final calibration, the Astrology and Divination 42 of the Empty Sky is ready to assist its wielder in understanding the concept of absence both metaphysically and literally.
Tale of Selenn and Globe of No-There
Long-time past, Selenn, sky-gazer of many years, empty in heart, full of quest for missing. Stars, sometimes there, sometimes no-there. Selenn thinks, why no-there? Feels deep void like absent stars. She takes round rock of darkness, like night but solid.
Under sky-cloth of night, she sings words of old to round rock. Seven nights of star-beams. Rock drinks starlight like thirsty wanderer in desert. Eighth night, moonstone crushed, blended with essence of far stars. Rock not just rock, now Globe of No-There, magic-laden.
One eve, Selenn into dark chamber goes, whispers to orb, “Where my child gone?” Orb glows, hums, leads her through maze, to door with sign of forgotten god. Selenn opens door, steps through, but not same world she enters. Globe of No-There shows her absent child in alien lands, safe but forever apart.
Selenn cry-tears but smiles too. Knows child alive, but also gone. Returns to world, tells many of Globe of No-There. Some call it cursed, some call it bless, some fear to use, some desperate to seek.
Moral of Tale: Globe of No-There gifts sight of missing but no promise of filling void. Knowing and not-having live as twin-souls in heart. Sometimes answer not solution, but acceptance of empty to make way for new-full.
