From: Insect 819 of the Chromatic Agony Bite
Ingredients:
- Seven standard scoops of Alchemically-Hardened Emerald Chitin Dust ground from the insect’s carapace.
- One heavy iron vat of rendered, purified animal fat sourced from a badger-lineage monstrosity.
- Two measures of localized magic flow captured within a temporary magic storage crystal.
- One handful of alchemical slag recovered from an ancient mechanical power transmission system.
Preparation:
- Heat the heavy iron vat of rendered animal fat over an intense steam forge until the liquid reaches a rolling boil, ensuring absolutely no chemical combustion is utilized during the heating process.
- Introduce the alchemical slag directly to the boiling fat, allowing the heavy metallic impurities to draw out the natural binding agents contained within the lipids.
- Carefully pour the Alchemically-Hardened Emerald Chitin Dust into the vat while simultaneously releasing the captured localized magic flow from the temporary storage crystal.
- The quantum-magical resonance of the chitin dust will violently react with the raw magic flow, causing the entire slurry to instantly cool and solidify into a incredibly dense, frictionless paste.
- Pack the resulting paste directly into the mechanical power transmission systems of zeppelins, airships, or factory equipment, heavily applying it to the exposed gears, rotational drive shafts, chains, and pulley belts.
- The crystalline structure of the dust entirely eliminates mechanical friction, allowing the massive machinery to operate in near total silence without generating the deafening roar that typically masks the approach of predatory monstrosities in the scrublands.
The Lore of the Frictionless Industrial Slurry
The chronicle of Slurry 9914 is etched into the brass plates of the metropolitan steam-guilds as the “Silence of the Skies.” In the ancient eras, the great zeppelins and airships of the seventy-three island countries were frequently brought down not by gravity, but by the territorial rage of the gestalt hive-minds. The deafening roar of unlubricated gears acted as a dinner bell for the Insect 819, whose sensitive antennae could detect the mechanical vibrations from leagues away.
For a tier one avatar, the lore of this slurry is a lesson in the survival of the industrial age. It is whispered among the gear-turners that the first alchemist to perfect the 9914 variant did so by observing how the emerald insects could move through dense, jagged slag-heaps without a single scratch on their carapaces. By grinding that very defense into a dust and binding it with the fatty lipids of a badger-monstrosity, the alchemist created a substance that defies the physical law of friction. To the avatar, this slurry represents the metaphysical silencing of their footprint on the world; it is the difference between a loud, doomed metal bird and a ghost-ship that passes through the clouds unnoticed by the stinging swarms.
Appearance of the Results
When a tier one avatar peers into the heavy iron vat after the localized magic flow has been released, they witness a physical affront to the properties of matter:
- The Texture: The slurry is a dense, heavy paste that appears more like liquid metal than grease. Despite its weight, it feels “slippery” even to the eyes; it seems to slide against the very air, never quite settling into a stagnant state.
- The Color: It is a deep, swirling forest green with glittering emerald flakes of chitin dust. When stirred, the alchemical slag creates veins of dark silver that pulse with a faint, residual magical luminescence.
- The Interaction: If the avatar touches the paste (using a non-conductive tool), they will notice it leaves no residue. It is so frictionless that it cannot “stick” to skin or wood, only bonding to the cold, industrial metals of drive shafts and pulley belts through the resonance of the magic flow.
- The Silence: Once applied to a spinning gear, the typical screech of metal-on-metal is instantly replaced by an eerie, total silence. The machinery continues to turn at high velocity, but it produces no heat and no vibration.
Cost
Due to the intensive labor required to harvest seven scoops of chitin from hyper-aggressive swarms, the price reflects the lethal risk of the ingredients:
- Standard Industrial Price: Exactly 65 Silver coins per small canister (sufficient for one airship engine or one factory assembly line).
- Underworld/Frontier Price: In the scrublands or near the deep jungles, the cost may rise to 1 Gold coin, as merchants must account for the loss of “harvester” avatars during the collection process.
- Bulk Discount: Mercantile guilds may offer a crate of four canisters for 220 Silver to licensed airship captains.

How it is Served or Offered
Because the Frictionless Industrial Slurry is so chemically slippery, it cannot be kept in standard ceramic or wooden jars; it would simply slide through the porous grain.
- The Vessel: It is offered in double-walled, alchemically-treated brass canisters with screw-top lids. The interior of the canister is etched with tiny magic circuits to keep the chitin dust in a state of perpetual suspension.
- The Offering: In the metropolises, a guild-servant will present the canister upon a velvet cushion, accompanied by a heavy metal trowel. They will demonstrate its quality by placing a single drop on a spinning tabletop; the table will continue to spin for hours without slowing, a visual proof of the 9914’s power.
- The Warning: The merchant will warn the tier one avatar that the slurry is strictly for mechanical use. Applying it to boots or gloves is a “suicide of the clumsy,” as the avatar will lose all ability to grip or stand, potentially sliding into a deep-pit or off the deck of a moving zeppelin.

Perception of Sight
- What is perceived: Motion-blur suppression, liquid-metal sheen, and the absence of thermal glow.
- Description: When the slurry is applied to high-velocity gears or drive shafts, the visual “strobe” effect of spinning metal disappears. The gears appear as a solid, unmoving ring of emerald-tinted mercury. Because friction is removed, the metal never reaches a heat that would cause it to glow or distort the air with shimmering waves.
- Positives: The avatar can visually inspect moving parts for microscopic cracks without needing to stop the engine. The lack of heat shimmer makes the machinery nearly invisible to infrared or heat-seeking detection.
- Negatives: The lack of visual movement is deceptive and highly dangerous. An avatar might mistakenly believe a drive shaft is stationary and reach out to touch it, resulting in the immediate, silent loss of a limb as the “motionless” metal shears through bone at thousands of rotations per minute.
Perception of Hearing
- What is perceived: The “Void of Sound” and localized acoustic dampening.
- Description: Upon the ritual application of the slurry, the deafening roar of industrial machinery is replaced by a physical weight of silence. It is not merely the absence of noise; the slurry appears to “swallow” ambient sounds. A heavy steam-hammer striking a treated anvil would sound like a distant, muffled thud rather than a bone-shaking clang.
- Positives: Allows for “Ghost-Running” of airships through the scrublands, preventing the gestalt hive-minds from detecting the mechanical vibrations. It also enables avatars to communicate in normal whispers even while standing directly next to massive factory turbines.
- Negatives: The silence is unnerving and can cause “acoustic vertigo.” Without the rhythmic sound of the engine, engineers cannot hear the subtle auditory cues that usually signal a mechanical failure or a structural “groan” before a catastrophic break.
Perception of Smell
- What is perceived: Clean, cold ozone and the scent of wet flint.
- Description: Standard grease smells of burning oil and sulfur; Slurry 9914 smells like a mountaintop after a lightning storm. The interaction of the alchemical slag and the badger-fat lipids creates a crisp, metallic odor that feels “sharp” in the nostrils.
- Positives: The scent acts as a clear indicator of the slurry’s purity; as long as the “cold flint” smell persists, the friction remains at absolute zero. It also masks the biological scent of the crew from ground-based predators.
- Negatives: The ozone is highly concentrated and can cause minor respiratory irritation or “foundry-throat” during long voyages. It also masks the smell of leaking steam or chemical fires, which are critical warning signs in airship travel.
Perception of Taste
- What is perceived: A dry, chalky metallic film on the palate.
- Description: Though the slurry is not for consumption, the microscopic chitin dust becomes aerosolized in the high-speed rotation of the gears. Avatars in the vicinity will taste a dry, mineral flavor—akin to licking a cold emerald or pulverized limestone.
- Positives: This “taste in the air” provides a passive confirmation that the lubrication is holding under the stress of high-tier maneuvers.
- Negatives: Long-term exposure leads to a loss of appetite and a persistent bitterness that ruins the enjoyment of the twenty-minute meal ritual, preventing the gain of the one health point per eating avatar.
Perception of Touch
- What is perceived: Absolute resistance-free movement and an unnatural “soapy” coldness.
- Description: Touching a treated surface (with a non-conductive tool) reveals a surface that offers zero feedback. It feels like the tool is moving through a vacuum. The paste itself is perpetually cold, as it actively shunts kinetic energy away from the metal.
- Positives: Prevents machinery from seizing due to thermal expansion. Tools and gears treated with the slurry last ten times longer than those with standard oil, as there is zero physical wear on the metal.
- Negatives: Anything that touches the slurry becomes impossible to grip. An avatar who accidentally gets a drop on their boots will be unable to maintain footing on any surface, sliding uncontrollably until the slurry is ritually purged.
Extra-Sensory Perception: Kinetic Transparency
- What is perceived: A sense of “weightlessness” in the world’s mechanical laws.
- Description: The avatar perceives the machinery not as heavy metal, but as a series of fluid, effortless vectors. The “struggle” of the engine against gravity and wind is no longer felt as a vibration in the soul.
- Positives: The airship feels more responsive, as if it has been shorn of its mass. This allows for precise, hair-trigger adjustments during flight through narrow canyons.
- Negatives: This can lead to overconfidence. The avatar may push the engine beyond its structural limits, forgetting that while friction is gone, the physical momentum and inertia of the massive airship still apply.
Extra-Sensory Perception: Hive-Mind Blindness
- What is perceived: A localized “dark spot” in the gestalt network.
- Description: To the antennae of the Insect 819, a machine treated with Slurry 9914 simply does not exist. The avatar perceives this as a protective shroud that “tucks” the machine away from the telepathic resonance of the swarm.
- Positives: Guarantees safe passage through “Swarm Zones” as long as the machinery is kept at a steady speed.
- Negatives: If the slurry is suddenly stripped away (by a concussive blast or magical purge), the “sudden appearance” of the machinery in the gestalt network is an immense affront, triggering an immediate, synchronized hyper-aggressive response from every insect within leagues.
While the Frictionless Industrial Slurry 9914 is primarily a bulk lubricant for the massive mechanical power transmission systems of the metropolises, a tier one avatar can siphon the residual kinetic energy and quantum resonance produced by the spinning emerald chitin. By “bleeding” the energy from a treated gear into an attuned item—such as a specialized copper ring, a heavy industrial belt, or a brass-bound bracer—the avatar can store these properties for personal use.
Activating these stored effects requires a standard Action, utilizing the attuned item as a conduit for the stored “kinetic transparency.” Once triggered, these enhancements remain active for exactly 1 hour, reflecting the time it takes for the alchemical slag to “settle” once removed from the magic flow of a moving engine.
Derived Enhancements and Abilities
- Frictionless Mobility (Buff): By channeling the slurry’s resonance through their feet or worn gear, the avatar effectively ignores the mechanical resistance of the environment. For the duration, the avatar is immune to the “Difficult Terrain” penalty of overgrown jungles or scrublands. They can move at their full movement speed across any surface, including mud, oil, or localized magical webs, without slowing.
- The Silent Ghost-Step (Ability): The avatar projects the same “Hive-Mind Blindness” used by silent zeppelins. For the duration, all physical movement made by the avatar is perfectly silent, as the slurry’s resonance “swallows” the sound of footsteps and the rustle of gear. This grants a +5 bonus to Stealth checks. Furthermore, the avatar becomes invisible to the Quantum-Entangled Sensory Antennae of any nearby insects, allowing them to walk through a swarm without triggering an aggressive response.
- Kinetic Redirection (Enhancement): The avatar’s armor or skin becomes “slippery” to the world’s physical physics. When a physical attack (such as a blade or a claw) strikes the avatar, the frictionless field shunts the kinetic energy away, granting a +3 bonus to Armor Class against non-magical melee attacks. Projectiles like arrows or bolts are likely to simply “slide” off the avatar’s curved armor surfaces rather than penetrating the meat-vessel.
- The Zero-Resistance Strike (Attack): By expending the stored energy through a held bladed weapon, the avatar eliminates all air resistance and friction on the blade’s surface for one strike. This is a high-velocity attack that ignores the target’s Armor Class from physical shields or plate armor, as the blade slides through the molecular gaps of the defense without losing momentum. This attack deals maximum damage for the weapon’s tier.
Storage and Duration Mechanics
The “Silence of the Skies” is a volatile industrial byproduct and requires careful management by the tier one avatar:
- Kinetic Harvesting: To store these effects, the avatar must spend one full minute in contact with a running engine treated with Slurry 9914, allowing their attuned item to “sync” with the vibration-dampening field.
- Attuned Capacitor: The effect is stored within the attuned item’s magic circuits. As long as the avatar does not exceed their ten-item attunement limit, the charge remains indefinitely until used.
- Active Duration: Once an action is taken to trigger the effect, the avatar’s gear pulses with a faint green light, and the enhancement lasts for 1 hour.
- The Slip-Risk: If the avatar is struck by an electrical or lightning-based attack while an effect is active, the magic flow in the slurry reacts violently. The avatar must pass a Dexterity check or become Prone as their own frictionless field causes them to lose all traction for one round.
Heavy-Grease-Silence and Metal-Birds that Fly Without Scream
It is carved in the rusted bones of the mountain-temples, moved from the mouth-sounds of the before-people into the scratchings of the old world, that the walkers of the multiple-life did seek to hide from the sky-demons. They were the avatars, the snatchers of the physical meat who hold the thoughts of the before-places. They traveled across the seventy-three island countries where the air is full of the stinger and the ground is full of the tooth.
The walkers were of the first tier, holding the one hundred percent of the single soul. They came to the city of the high-smoke, where the great gears of the steam-gods turn the wheels of the world. In those times, the machines of the walkers were a Great Affront to the ears; they screamed with the roar of the metal-on-metal, a dinner-bell for the emerald insects who sit in the deep jungles. To fly a zeppelin was to die in the jaws of the swarm, for the noise was a beacon of the territorial rage.
The walkers sought the Slurry of the 9914, the juice of the non-friction. They went to the factories to buy the heavy iron vat. They sought the fat of the badger-beast, the creature of the scrublands who digs in the dirt. They traded the silver coins, for the items of the first tier are exactly expressed in the silver. Because the world is a market of the seller, they paid sixty-five of the silver to the merchant of the oily hands.
They took the chitin of the emerald insect, ground into the dust of the green-shining. They went to the place of the localized magic flow, where the mana bubbles like the water of the pot. One walker, who was called the Gear-Greaser, built the forge of the intense steam. He used the elemental fire and the elemental water, for the ancient law says the chemical combustion is a physical affront to the slurry.
The Gear-Greaser heated the badger-fat until it reached the rolling boil. He threw in the alchemical slag, the waste-stones of the ancient gear-turners. The lipids of the fat did bind to the metal of the slag. Then, he poured the emerald dust while the magic storage crystal was broken to release the flow. The ancient scratchings say the reaction was a violent reaction of the quantum-magic. The heat died in a second. The liquid became the dense paste of the forest-green, a substance so slippery that the air itself could not hold it.
The walkers applied the slurry to the gears of their metal-bird. Suddenly, the scream of the machine was dead. The silence was a physical weight. They flew into the unsafe area, where the armor of the class for all the walkers is cut in the exact half by the mechanics of the world. They flew over the hive-minds of the emerald insects. The insects did not move. Their antennae, which hear the thoughts of the metal, were blind to the silent bird.
But the Gear-Greaser was a walker of the foolishness. He saw how the slurry made the metal move without the struggle. He thought, “If my bird is fast, I shall be faster.” He took the slurry and wiped it upon the soles of his boots of the leather. He took the action to activate the frictionless mobility.
When the Gear-Greaser stepped upon the deck of the flying bird, his feet found the absolute zero of the resistance. He did not walk; he slid like the falling star. He could not grip the wood. He could not hold the rope. He slid across the deck, through the railing, and into the high sky. Because he had not eaten the twenty-minute meal and his health-points were the low health of the zero-resting, the fall was his ending.
The Gear-Greaser perished dramatically. His physical form vaporized into the cloud of the sparks before he hit the dirt. The other walkers, seeing the frictionless tragedy, did not stop the bird. They flew in the silence of the ghost, for they knew the green grease is the savior of the machine but the killer of the man who forgets the friction of the earth.
Moral: The silence that hides the metal-bird from the demon of the sky will also hide the solid ground from the foot of the man who seeks to walk like the gods.
