The Cartographers Silent Mark 113

From: Silent Veil Polypore 42

Quest Giver: Elara Vancroft, a meticulous and somewhat eccentric elderly cartographer residing in a cluttered shop within a moderately sized Saṃsāran trade town. She is known for her incredibly detailed maps of forgotten ruins and treacherous wildlands, but her eyesight is failing, and her hands are becoming unsteady.

Premise/Goal: Elara has been commissioned to create a definitive map of the “Whispering Labyrinth,” a section of ancient, crumbling ruins deep within the nearby Shadowwood—a place known for its eerie silence and the way sounds play tricks on the ear. She believes the unique acoustic properties of the ruins are interfering with her sensitive magical surveying tools, which react poorly to even subtle vibrations and echoes. She requires several fresh specimens of the Silent Veil Polypore [42] not for consumption, but to be carefully placed around her survey equipment at specific points within the Labyrinth. She theorizes that the polypore’s natural sound-dampening and attention-absorbing qualities will create small zones of perfect stillness, allowing her tools to function correctly so she can capture the Labyrinth’s true layout. She provides a rough sketch of the Shadowwood’s edge and a description of the polypore, learned from an old herbalist’s tome.

Location Hint: The Whispering Labyrinth, located in the deepest, oldest sections of the Shadowwood, specifically within crumbling stone chambers and forgotten undercrofts where silence reigns supreme.

Implied Stakes/Motivation: Elara’s reputation and a significant commission are on the line. The map is also sought after by a local scholars’ guild who believe the Labyrinth holds historical secrets. Without the polypore, her work cannot be completed accurately.

Elara Vancroft’s Instructions to the Avatars: “Ah, yes, brave souls! My old eyes thank you for considering this delicate task. The Lumina Guild pays well, but more than that, the Labyrinth… it deserves to be mapped truly. Now, these ‘Silent Veils,’ as the tome calls them… they are shy things. You’ll need the sketch, of course. Look for shelf-like growths, pale and almost… empty looking, often on very old, fallen timber or in the deepest shadows of crumbling stone where silence itself seems to pool. The tome insists they must be harvested with utmost care. Move like shadows yourselves – no loud talk, no heavy treads. They say the fungus ‘closes off’ if disturbed by clamor. Use a blade of wood or bone if you have one, metal can… offend them. Once plucked, they are delicate. Wrap each specimen gently in damp moss – not wet, mind you, just damp – and place them in a dark, breathable container. A loosely woven basket lined with more moss would be ideal. I need them fresh, their essence of quietude intact. The Shadowwood itself is ancient, and the Labyrinth within its heart… well, it does not welcome visitors gladly. Be wary of more than just its tricks of sound. I need these polypores before the week is out, as the Guild grows impatient, and my own patience for these faulty readings wears thin.”

Gold Reward: Elara Vancroft offers 80 Silver Pieces upon successful delivery of at least four prime, undamaged specimens of Silent Veil Polypore [42]. If the polypores allow her to create an exceptionally accurate map, leading to a bonus from the Lumina Scholars’ Guild, she promises an additional 40 Silver Pieces to the party.

Uncommon Magical Reward: Should the party succeed and her map be lauded, Elara will also gift them a “Lens of Revealed Pathways [207].” This is a small, polished crystal lens set in a simple brass ring. Once per day, when the holder looks through it at a complex physical path (like a dense thicket, a confusing ruin layout, or even a moderately tangled map), faint, shimmering lines will briefly illuminate the most direct or safest-seeming route through the immediate area or section being viewed. The vision lasts only a few moments but is often enough to grant crucial direction.

Difficulties:

  • Navigating the dense, light-starved, and often disorienting ancient Shadowwood to locate the entrance to the Whispering Labyrinth.
  • The Whispering Labyrinth itself is a crumbling maze of unstable floors, potential deadfalls, and narrow passages, requiring careful movement.
  • The inherent acoustic distortions within the Labyrinth can play tricks on the senses, making it hard to judge distances, locate sounds, or even trust one’s own hearing.
  • Identifying and locating the Silent Veil Polypore, which naturally blends into its dim, quiet surroundings and grows in discreet clusters.
  • The necessity of harvesting the polypores with extreme care and silence, lest their magical properties be diminished or the fungi themselves become inert.
  • Potential encounters with shy, reclusive, or territorial wildlife native to the deep Shadowwood or the ruins, which may react poorly to intrusion, even if not overtly aggressive (e.g., sound-sensitive creatures, illusion-casting flora).

Problems (Potential Complications):

  • Other parties might be interested in the Labyrinth or its resources; the party could encounter rival explorers from another faction of the Scholars’ Guild, or opportunistic foragers who might have already disturbed potential polypore sites.
  • The Silent Veil Polypores might be in a particularly inaccessible or guarded section of the Labyrinth.
  • Elara’s description, based on an old tome, might be slightly inaccurate, leading to confusion in identifying the correct fungus amongst similar-looking, non-magical (or even harmful) varieties.
  • A sudden change in weather (e.g., a rare thunderstorm) could make the Shadowwood even more hazardous or temporarily obscure polypore sites.
  • The “eerie silence” of the Labyrinth might have a psychological effect on the party, inducing unease, paranoia, or making it difficult to communicate effectively.
  • Elara might have forgotten a crucial detail about the polypore’s handling, or her tools might require an even more specific type or age of polypore than she initially realized.

Who to Ask for More Information:

  • Elara Vancroft: For clarifications on her instructions, the appearance of the polypore, or the nature of her surveying tools’ sensitivity.
  • Old Willowisp, the Hedge Herbalist: A reclusive elderly woman living on the very edge of the Shadowwood, known for her knowledge of forest flora. She is wary of outsiders but might share general information about safe passage in the wood’s outer reaches or clues about where “quiet things grow” if approached respectfully and perhaps offered a small gift or service.
  • Master Valerius of the Lumina Scholars’ Guild: He is the one who commissioned Elara. While he primarily wants the map, he might possess historical records or survey notes from previous failed attempts to map the Labyrinth, which could hint at its dangers or specific known quiet zones. He may be haughty and demand a reason for the inquiries.
  • “Tracks-the-Shadow” Ren: A retired trapper and guide who sometimes frequents the “Sleeping Dragon” tavern in town. He no longer ventures into the deep Shadowwood but might offer warnings about its known denizens or reliable (if old) paths for a price or a good tale.

Chapter XVII
Of the Labyrinth That Drinketh Sounde, and the Perilous Quest for the Stille Growthe within the Shadow-Wode

…And so, as ancient mappes and forgotten texts do attest, beyond the Sunken Copse where mournful willows weep ful bitterly, there lyeth the verge of the Shadow-Wode, a place olde beyond the count of mortal men. Whan that a soul doth enter there, the light of day itself doth seem afeard, and falleth but in slivered gleams, as if the trees themselves, with their blacke bowes and leaves that stir never, do conspire to keepe the sunne at bay. Certes, it is a wode of profound and heavy silence, yet paradoxically, not always so. For deepe within its umbrage grene and grey, where the oldest and most gnarled of trees do keepe their solemn watch, men speken of a place yclept the Whispering Labyrinth.

Allas, no merrie whisperings find ye there, but rather a silence that doth playe cruel japes upon the eare. For here, amongst the crumbling walles and arches lowe, where stones do sweat with an unholy dewe, a footefall may returne as the shattering of glasse, or a soft-breathed worde may echo back as the shriek of a lost soule. Or, what is more unsettling to the hearte of man, a shout may vanish utterly, as if swallowed by the very stones, leaving naught but a heavier quiet in its wake. Many a stout herte hath turned to water in this Labyrinth, not by beast nor by phantom visible, but by the unstedfastness of sounde itself, which doth unmake a man’s reason.

Yet, it is in swich places of eerie desolation that rare wonders oft do hide their face. For it is rumoured that within the deepest, most light-forsaken chambers of this Labyrinth, where the air itself seems to hold its breath, there groweth a certain FUNGUS, a pale and shelf-like bloom that some do call the “Stille Growthe” or the “Eare of Absence.” This singular marvel, it is said, doth possess the vertue of drinking all sounde about it, creating a small haven of pure and perfect quiet, a bubble of stillness in a world of deceitful echoes. Cartographers of great cunning, and seekers of lore most arcane, have sought this Stille Growthe, for it is told that only by its grace may certain delicate instrumentes of measuring, which the Labyrinth’s trickery doth confound, be made to worke trewly.

But let him who seeketh this bloom beware, for the pathes within are winding, and the stones, they are not fast. The silence, it may breed phantoms in the minde, and the Labyrinth doth not give up its secrets lightly. Some have entered, drawn by the lure of knowledge or the promise of the Stille Growthe’s power, and have not returned, their owne silence becoming but another layer upon that ancient, waiting quiet. To tread those halles is to walke upon the bones of forgotten ages, and to seek the heart of its silence is to court the very edge of that which may unmake the senses. Therfore, with prayer and with great wisedom must one approach, lest the Shadow-Wode claime another curious soul for its own. For in that place, what is not heard may yet bring the greatest peril…

Guide Manager’s Notes: The Cartographer’s Silent Mark [113]
Alright, let’s get this expedition of eerie echoes and fungal finds underway!

  • Meeting Elara – The Cluttered Catalyst!
    • The Vibe: Kick things off by really painting a picture of Elara’s shop – it’s an explosion of maps, weird tools, half-finished charts, and the smell of old paper and exotic inks! She’s brilliant, a little dotty, and her passion for this one last great map before her sight completely fails her should be super clear. Make the players want to help this awesome, slightly tragic NPC.
    • The Ask: She’ll lay out her problem: the Lumina Scholars’ Guild wants a map of the Whispering Labyrinth, but her super-sensitive (and probably super expensive!) magical surveying tools are going haywire because of the Labyrinth’s sound-bending weirdness. Her solution? The legendary Silent Veil Polypore [42]! She needs about four to five fresh, prime specimens. She’ll hand over her precious sketches and notes on what the polypore looks like and how to handle it (super carefully, super quietly!).
  • Hitting the Books (or the Streets!) – Information Hunt!
    • Optional Intel: The party might want to dig deeper. Perfect!
      • Old Willowisp: This reclusive herbalist on the edge of the Shadowwood is their best bet for polypore lore or safe passage tips. She’s eccentric, maybe a bit fey-touched, and won’t spill her secrets for just a smile. A small side-task or a respectful offering might loosen her tongue.
      • Master Valerius (Scholars’ Guild): He’s the one who commissioned the map. He’s likely arrogant and views the party as mere errand-runners. If they approach him, he might provide some dusty old notes on previous Labyrinth expeditions (full of dire warnings, of course!) or try to glean info from them. Great for a bit of social sparring!
      • “Tracks-the-Shadow” Ren: The classic grizzled trapper in the local tavern. He’ll grumble about the Shadowwood’s outer dangers for the price of a few drinks or a compelling story from the party’s own (possibly embellished) adventures.
  • Into the Shadowwood – Let the Eerie Times Roll!
    • Atmosphere is Key: This isn’t just a walk in the park. Describe the oppressive canopy, the way sunlight struggles to get through, the unnatural stillness. Normal forest sounds are muted here, replaced by an expectant hush. It should feel ancient and a little unnerving. Maybe their own voices don’t carry quite right.
  • The Labyrinth Beckons – Finding the Unfindable!
    • Navigation Challenge: The Shadowwood isn’t going to give up the Labyrinth’s location easily. Use descriptive navigation challenges – following faint trails, interpreting Elara’s old sketch, maybe even dealing with minor magical misdirections if the wood is fey-touched. Make finding the entrance feel like a real accomplishment.
  • First Steps Inside – Welcome to the Sound Blender!
    • Acoustic Mayhem: This is where the Labyrinth earns its name! Describe the crumbling architecture, the deep shadows, and then hit them with the sound tricks. A dropped pebble sounds like a boulder. A whisper echoes back as a scream, or not at all. Their own heartbeats might sound deafening in the sudden silences. This should be disorienting and keep them on edge.
  • Polypore Quest – Hide and Sneak!
    • The Hunt: Now the search for the Silent Veil Polypore begins! Elara’s notes guide them to look in dark, damp, undisturbed places within the ruins – forgotten undercrofts, behind crumbling statues, in silent alcoves. This isn’t a simple foraging check; it’s about exploring different chambers and sections, each with its own potential peril or eerie feature.
  • Harvesting 101 – Shhh, the Fungus is Sleeping!
    • The Delicate Touch: When they finally spot a cluster, remind them of Elara’s warnings: silence is golden, and gentle hands are a must. If they barge in making a racket or try to roughly rip it from its perch, have the first one they touch visibly lose its subtle glow or crumble slightly, its magic gone! This is their learning moment. Non-metallic tools are best.
  • Labyrinth Shenanigans – More Than Just Echoes!
    • Hazards Galore: While searching, throw in some Tier 1 appropriate Labyrinth challenges:
      • Crumbling Paths: Floors that groan, loose flagstones, sections that might give way if too much noise/weight is applied.
      • Creatures of Quiet: Not necessarily combat monsters. Think giant, silent cave spiders whose webs vibrate with the slightest sound, or colonies of bats that will swarm if disturbed by loud noises. Maybe some shy, ancient constructs that only activate if specific sound thresholds are breached.
      • The Silence Itself: Prolonged exposure to the Labyrinth’s oppressive or trick-playing silence could impose minor psychological effects – a creeping sense of paranoia, difficulty concentrating, or a reluctance to speak.
  • Got the Goods! (But Wait, There’s More?)
    • Success, Mostly: They’ve carefully gathered 4-5 beautiful, fresh polypores. They’re probably feeling pretty good!
    • Uh-Oh Moment (Optional Complication): Just as they’re packing up the last one, maybe their careful work dislodges something else – a hidden section of the Labyrinth opens, they hear another group of explorers nearby (rivals?), or a Labyrinth guardian (something bigger than the spiders) finally notices their prolonged presence, even if they were quiet. This can be a chase or a tense standoff rather than a full fight.
  • The Return Journey – Handle With Care!
    • Fragile Cargo: Now they have to get these delicate, magically sensitive fungi back through the Shadowwood. They need to keep them damp (as Elara said, wrapped in moss) and in darkness. Bumping them around or exposing them to harsh elements could spoil them. Maybe a sudden downpour or a clumsy party member creates some tension here.
  • Elara’s Delight – Payday! (Part 1)
    • The Handover: Elara will be ecstatic (in her own quiet, meticulous way) if they return with good quality specimens. She’ll examine them closely with her magnifying glass.
    • Initial Reward: She pays the promised 80 Silver Pieces. She’ll thank them profusely and mention she needs to prepare to use them with her tools.
  • Bonus Round? – The Cartographer’s Escort!
    • Follow-Up Hook: This is a great point for a potential follow-up. Elara, impressed by their skill, might realize she can’t risk going into the Labyrinth alone to actually use the polypores and do her mapping. She could hire the party again, this time as escorts and assistants to help her place the polypores and protect her while she works her cartography magic. This lets the party see the direct application of their gathered items!
  • Ripple Effects – The Guild Notices!
    • New Opportunities: Even if the quest ends with Elara, word of the party’s success in the notoriously difficult Whispering Labyrinth might reach the Lumina Scholars’ Guild. Master Valerius, or another ambitious scholar, might approach them with a new proposition, perhaps one delving deeper into the Labyrinth’s historical secrets now that Elara’s map (thanks to the party!) might soon exist.

This structure should give you a fantastic framework to run a really engaging and atmospheric quest for your Tier 1 party! Get them to really feel that silence!
