Fading Footwraps 17

From Fungi: Silent Veil Polypore 42

Description: These are meticulously crafted footwraps, appearing as soft, pliable bands of dark, undyed leather or densely woven, moss-green fabric. They are surprisingly light and conform closely to the wearer’s feet and ankles. Close inspection reveals an incredibly fine, almost imperceptible silvery-grey powder subtly worked into the material’s fibers, and the inner lining often feels unusually soft and sound-absorbent, like dense felt. They emit no discernible odor, or perhaps only the faintest scent of damp earth and old wood.

Incorporation of Polypore: Finely dried and powdered Silent Veil Polypore [42] is carefully and ritually kneaded into the leather during its tanning or oiling process, or meticulously spun into the very threads if fabric-based. The inner lining might also feature thin, pressed layers of the polypore that have been treated with natural resins to make them durable yet flexible. The crafting process often involves working in quiet, dimly lit conditions to preserve the fungus’s essence.

Magical Effect: When worn, the Fading Footwraps [17] significantly dampen the sound of the wearer’s footsteps, reducing noise on various surfaces from a noticeable tread to a mere whisper or soft pressure. Beyond just sound, they also subtly affect how an observer’s attention is drawn to the wearer’s lower movements; quick steps might seem less jarring to the eye, and scuffs or minor missteps are less likely to attract immediate notice. The wearer feels a curious lightness in their steps and a diminished sense of their own impact on the ground. This effect is most potent in low-light conditions or when moving with conscious stealth, making the wearer’s passage more akin to a drifting shadow than a physical presence. The effect is passive while worn and primarily aids in quiet movement and avoiding casual auditory detection. It does not make the wearer invisible but makes their footfalls part of the ambient “absence.”

Crafting Discipline Hinted At: Leatherworking, Weaving, Herbalism (for preparation of the polypore).

The Fading Footwraps [17] are more than mere apparel; they are a subtle tool for those who wish to tread the world of Saṃsāra with a lighter, less obtrusive presence. Crafted with meticulous care and imbued with the essence of the Silent Veil Polypore [42], they offer unique advantages to the wearer.

Appearance: These footwraps are masterfully constructed, presenting as soft, highly pliable bands designed to conform with supple precision to the wearer’s feet and ankles, offering both comfort and a secure fit. They are typically fashioned from dark, undyed leather that seems to drink the light, or a densely woven, resilient fabric in muted shades of moss-green or shadowy grey. Despite their robust construction, they are surprisingly light, feeling almost weightless in hand and on foot. A very close and careful inspection might reveal an incredibly fine, silvery-grey powder – the processed Silent Veil Polypore – almost imperceptibly integrated into the material’s fibers or surface treatment. The inner lining is distinct, often composed of a thicker, unusually soft material that feels like dense, sound-absorbent felt against the skin, further enhancing their quiet nature. They characteristically emit no discernible artificial odor, carrying perhaps only the faintest, most elusive scent of damp earth, old wood, and the profound stillness of the deep forests where their primary component originates.

Tier One Stats:

  • Environmental Stealth Bonus: The wearer gains a +1 conditional bonus to any checks made to move silently (e.g., Stealth checks) when they are moving in dim light, darkness, or through areas with natural sound cover (like rain or wind). This bonus reflects the footwraps’ enhanced efficacy in environments conducive to stealth.
  • Reduced Noticeability Threshold (Narrative): Creatures relying on passive perception to notice the wearer’s approach by sound do so as if the wearer were 5 feet further away than their actual distance. This is a narrative effect adjudicated by the Guide Manager, making it slightly easier to get closer before being casually detected by hearing.
  • Temporary Skills Gained: Ephemeral Tread: While wearing the Fading Footwraps [17], the wearer gains a temporary, intuitive understanding of how to move with minimal impact. Even if not formally trained in stealth, they can attempt to move silently across most common surfaces without an inherent penalty for lacking such a skill. This doesn’t grant expertise but removes the typical disadvantage of an untrained individual trying to be quiet, allowing them to make basic stealthy movement attempts related to footfall with a degree of competence. This effect lasts as long as the footwraps are worn.

Passive Magics:

  • Muffled Steps:
    • The primary passive enchantment woven into the Fading Footwraps [17] is their remarkable ability to dampen the sound of the wearer’s footsteps. The treated materials and polypore essence absorb and diffuse the vibrations and impacts of movement, reducing typical footfall noises – from heavy treads to light steps – to mere whispers or soft, almost imperceptible pressures on the ground. Onlookers or those attempting to perceive the wearer by sound find it significantly more difficult; for game purposes, this might impose a minor penalty (e.g., -2) on passive Perception checks to hear the wearer, or grant the wearer a slight edge (e.g., +1) on active checks to move without being heard by footfall.
    • Positives: Greatly enhances the ability to move stealthily in various environments, reduces the chance of alerting guards or wary creatures by sound, allows for closer approaches to targets or points of interest.
    • Negatives: The extreme quietness can sometimes make it difficult for the wearer’s own allies to track their position by sound in low visibility, potentially leading to separation or miscoordination if not anticipated.
  • Flickering Movement:
    • Beyond just sound, the footwraps subtly affect how an observer’s attention is drawn to the wearer’s lower body movements. Quick steps might seem less jarring or attention-grabbing, and minor scuffs, stumbles, or irregularities in gait are less likely to attract immediate notice, especially in peripheral vision or in complex visual environments. The wearer’s passage, particularly their foot and leg movements, can appear more fluid and “shadow-like,” blending slightly with the ambient stillness or visual noise.
    • Positives: Makes the wearer less conspicuous when moving, even if partially visible. Minor errors in footing are less likely to betray their presence. Enhances the overall impression of a stealthy, graceful demeanor.
    • Negatives: This effect is subtle and does not obscure the wearer from direct, focused observation. It might also lead to a slight overconfidence in the wearer regarding their visual stealth if they rely on it too heavily in well-lit or open areas.
  • Sensation of Lightness:
    • Those who don the Fading Footwraps [17] often report a curious and persistent sensation of lightness in their feet and legs. They feel as though their impact on the ground is diminished, and that each step requires slightly less effort. This is more than just the physical lightness of the wraps themselves; it’s a subtle magical buoyancy.
    • Positives: Can reduce fatigue from long periods of walking or stalking (narrative effect). Enhances the psychological feeling of being stealthy and nimble, which can boost confidence in such actions. Makes movement feel smoother and more effortless.
    • Negatives: The unusual lightness might require a brief period of adjustment to prevent slight overstepping or misjudging impact until the wearer becomes accustomed to it. It offers no actual increase in speed or jumping ability for a Tier 1 item.

Active Magics: While primarily passive, the innate magic of the Silent Veil Polypore [42] within the footwraps can be consciously drawn upon by a focused wearer for brief, enhanced effects:

  • Moment of Absolute Stillness:
    • Once per significant rest period (e.g., after a long rest), the wearer can focus their will into the footwraps (requiring a moment of concentration, perhaps equivalent to an action in structured time). For the next minute, the sound-dampening effect of their footsteps becomes almost absolute on nearly any surface. Furthermore, if they are moving slowly (e.g., half pace) within shadows or dim light, their leg and foot movements become exceptionally difficult for observers to track visually, appearing almost to glide or blur with the surrounding darkness.
    • Positives: Allows for an extremely stealthy approach or passage through a critical area for a short duration. Ideal for bypassing a keenly alert sentry or crossing a dangerously noisy surface undetected.
    • Negatives: This heightened effect is very brief. It requires conscious activation and focus, which might not be possible in immediate peril. If the wearer attempts to move quickly or perform complex maneuvers during this minute, the “absolute stillness” of footfalls might be broken more easily than the standard passive muffling.
  • Fleeting Glance Deflection:
    • Once per significant rest period, if the wearer is relatively still or moving inconspicuously within a group or a visually “busy” environment, and they perceive that a casual, undirected glance from an observer might be about to fall upon them, they can trigger this subtle effect (often as a quick mental reflex or minor action). For the next few seconds (perhaps 3-5 seconds), the observer’s unfocused gaze is more likely to slide past the wearer without truly registering their presence or specific details, as if the wearer were momentarily part of the unremarkable background.
    • Positives: Can prevent unwanted casual attention at a critical moment, allowing the wearer to avoid being singled out or remembered from a cursory scan. Useful for blending into a crowd or avoiding the initial notice of a patrolling guard who isn’t actively searching for them.
    • Negatives: This is not mind control or true invisibility; it only affects casual, unfocused observation. It offers no protection against someone actively searching for the wearer or already suspicious of them. Attempting to use it while performing obvious or attention-grabbing actions will likely cause it to fail. The effect is very brief and relies on the wearer’s timing and stillness.

The Fading Footwraps [17], being a product of specialized craftsmanship and infused with the subtle magic of the Silent Veil Polypore [42], are not items one would typically find displayed in a common cobbler’s stall or a general adventurer’s outfitter. Their acquisition is often a matter of knowing the right people, seeking out hidden workshops, or navigating the more discreet channels of commerce within the world of Saṃsāra.

  • Artisan Workshops of a Singular Focus:
    • Where and How It’s Sold: In the quiet backstreets of larger towns, or sometimes in secluded workshops nestled away from the main thoroughfares, one might find an artisan – a master leatherworker, a weaver of rare textiles, or even a skilled herbalist with a talent for material infusion – who specializes in creating gear imbued with subtle enchantments. These crafters often work on commission or for a very select clientele who appreciate their unique skills. Their shops, if they even have a public-facing one, would be unassuming, perhaps marked only by a subtle, esoteric symbol. To purchase Fading Footwraps [17] here, a potential buyer would typically need a referral, demonstrate a genuine understanding of the item’s purpose, or have a prior relationship with the artisan. The transaction itself would be a personal affair, possibly involving a discussion of the wearer’s specific needs.
    • Cost: These are bespoke items. A meticulously crafted pair of Fading Footwraps [17] from such an artisan would command a high price, reflecting the skill, the rarity of properly prepared polypore, and the time invested. Expect costs ranging from 75 to 150 silver pieces for a standard pair. For exceptional craftsmanship, custom fitting, or if the artisan has access to particularly potent polypore, the price could easily extend into 1 to 3 gold pieces. Barter for equally rare materials, unique tools the artisan might need, or significant favors would also be considered.
  • Outfitters for the Unseen Professions:
    • Where and How It’s Sold: Organizations that operate in the shadows – be they guilds of thieves, networks of spies, associations of discreet couriers, or even clandestine orders of assassins – have a vested interest in acquiring items like Fading Footwraps [17]. Within these circles, a “quartermaster” or a specialized supplier might procure or commission such gear for their members. It would not be an open sale but rather part of their operational toolkit, perhaps provided based on rank, mission requirements, or earned merit. Occasionally, if a guild has a surplus or needs to raise funds discreetly, they might sell a pair through a trusted, high-level intermediary to an outside party with the right connections and a willingness to pay a premium for the guild’s silence.
    • Cost: If acquired internally, the “cost” might be in loyalty, successful completion of dangerous tasks, or a portion of future earnings. If sold externally through a guild intermediary, the price would be significantly inflated due to the risk and exclusivity, likely starting at 2 to 5 gold pieces, and the buyer would be thoroughly vetted.
  • Emporiums of Esoteric Wares (Rare):
    • Where and How It’s Sold: In some of Saṃsāra’s largest and most magically saturated metropolises, one might find a handful of truly unique shops that deal in items of subtle magic, illusionary aids, and tools for those who prefer finesse over force. These establishments are often camouflaged, perhaps appearing as dusty antique stores, quiet bookbinderies, or peculiar apothecaries. The proprietor is typically an individual of considerable arcane or worldly knowledge and extreme discretion. Fading Footwraps [17] might appear here very occasionally, sourced from a reclusive artisan or a fortunate find. A customer would need to demonstrate specific knowledge or be subtly guided by the shopkeeper to even learn of its availability.
    • Cost: Such emporiums cater to a niche, often wealthy or desperate, clientele. The price for Fading Footwraps [17] here would be at a significant premium, reflecting the shop’s overhead, the rarity of the item, and the convenience of finding it without personal risk. Expect prices in the range of 3 to 7 gold pieces, potentially more if the item is presented as having a unique history or slightly enhanced properties.
  • Traveling Master Crafters:
    • Where and How It’s Sold: Saṃsāra sees its share of itinerant master artisans who travel from city to city, or region to region, offering their unique skills. A leatherworker or weaver with the secret of infusing the Silent Veil Polypore into their creations might carry a very limited stock of Fading Footwraps [17] or craft them on demand if supplied with the rare fungus. They would likely sell their wares at exclusive trade gatherings, through private appointments arranged by local patrons of their craft, or to individuals they meet on their travels who impress them with their need or discernment.
    • Cost: The cost would be comparable to a stationary artisan workshop (1 to 3 gold pieces), but might fluctuate based on local demand, the artisan’s current need for funds, or the perceived status of the buyer. They might also be more open to bartering for exotic materials or safe passage through dangerous territories.

Regarding Commissioning the Item: For a Tier 1 avatar, directly commissioning a pair of Fading Footwraps [17] might be a viable, if challenging, path. This would involve first locating a crafter skilled in both their mundane art (leatherworking/weaving) and the subtle herbalism/infusion techniques required for the polypore. The avatar might need to provide the rare Silent Veil Polypore [42] themselves, having acquired it through foraging or its own discreet trade. The cost would then primarily cover the artisan’s labor, skill, and any other mundane materials, potentially ranging from 50 to 100 silver pieces on top of the cost/effort of acquiring the polypore. This route requires building trust with a suitable artisan and respecting their often secretive methods.

The trade of Fading Footwraps [17] is thus one of quiet connections, specialized knowledge, and a recognition of their subtle but significant value to those who walk the less-trodden paths.

The Fading Footwraps [17], imbued with the essence of the Silent Veil Polypore [42], are a boon to any avatar in Saṃsāra who values moving like a whisper on the wind. Their magic transforms the wearer’s interaction with their environment, enabling nuanced defensive evasions and subtle offensive maneuvers through the art of unobtrusive passage.

  • Urban Environments (Rooftops, Cobbled Streets, Guarded Manors, Bustling Markets After Hours):
    • Defensive Roleplay (Evasion and Infiltration):
      • Silent Rooftop Escape: “Pursued across the moon-slick tiles of a Saṃsāran metropolis, Elara, clad in her Fading Footwraps, feels almost weightless. Each landing from a leap between buildings is a mere sigh of disturbed air, the wraps absorbing the impact and sound. When a pursuer relies on hearing her footfalls to track her across a gravel-strewn section, she describes how they hesitate, their head cocked in confusion as her steps make no betraying crunch. She uses the ‘Moment of Absolute Stillness’ active magic as she crosses a rickety wooden beam near a watchman’s post, her passage utterly without sound, her form a fleeting shadow against the chimney stacks.”
      • Navigating a Patrolled Mansion: “Finn needs to slip through the marbled halls of a noble’s mansion at night. The Fading Footwraps muffle his steps on the polished stone to an almost imperceptible degree. He recounts how a patrolling guard, rounding a corner, seems to look through his legs as he flattens himself against a shadowy alcove; the ‘Flickering Movement’ passive makes his lower body less distinct. When another guard pauses nearby, suspiciously listening, Finn activates ‘Fleeting Glance Deflection,’ and the guard’s casual scan of the hallway dismisses his still form as just another play of moonlight and shadow.”
      • Losing a Tail in a Quiet Market: “Realizing she’s being followed through a nearly deserted late-night market, Lyra uses the footwraps to her advantage. Instead of breaking into a conspicuous run, she weaves through the labyrinth of closed stalls and stacked crates. Her steps are whispers on the cobblestones. She describes the feeling of her pursuer growing frustrated, their attempts to pinpoint her by sound failing, until she can melt into a deep doorway, her presence so muted by the wraps that she effectively vanishes from their casual perception.”
    • Offensive Roleplay (Indirect Enablement & Stealthy Approach):
      • Setting an Ambush in an Alley: “Kai plans to ambush a target in a narrow, debris-strewn alley. The Fading Footwraps allow him to move into his chosen hiding spot – perhaps a precarious ledge or behind a stack of refuse – without dislodging loose stones or making any sound that would alert his quarry. He feels the ‘Sensation of Lightness’ as he makes a difficult climb, his footing sure and silent, ensuring he is perfectly positioned when the target arrives.”
      • Pilfering from a Merchant’s Strongbox: “Elara identifies a lightly guarded strongbox in the back room of a shop. Wearing the footwraps, she describes how she can approach the area during a lull in activity, her steps making no sound on the wooden floorboards. The ‘Flickering Movement’ makes her crouching form less noticeable to a distracted clerk in the front. She uses the ‘Moment of Absolute Stillness’ for the critical seconds she spends kneeling by the box, manipulating its lock, her presence utterly absorbed by the quiet of the room.”
      • Shadowing a Contact to a Secret Meeting: “Finn needs to follow a secretive contact without being detected. The Fading Footwraps are crucial as he tails them through quiet residential streets and echoing courtyards. He narrates how he can match their pace, his own footfalls completely masked, allowing him to stay close enough to observe their destination without ever giving himself away by sound. The subtle ‘Fleeting Glance Deflection’ might even save him if the contact pauses and casually looks back.”
  • Wilderness Environments & Ancient Ruins (Dense Forests, Echoing Caves, Crumbling Temples):
    • Defensive Roleplay (Evasion and Hazard Avoidance):
      • Evading a Territorial Beast in a Forest: “Tracking a rare herb deep in an ancient forest, Lyra accidentally strays into the territory of a sound-sensitive Grove Stalker. As the creature begins to sniff the air and turn its head, alerted by a snapped twig (from before she focused on her steps), she relies on her Fading Footwraps. She describes how she can backtrack with almost supernatural quietness, each step cushioned, her form less jarring to the ancient woods. The ‘Sensation of Lightness’ allows her to step over roots and fallen branches with minimal disturbance.”
      • Crossing a Treacherous, Unstable Ruin Floor: “Inside a crumbling temple, Kai must cross a wide chamber where the floor is a mosaic of loose tiles and fragile supports. The Fading Footwraps not only silence his steps, preventing tell-tale clatters that could warn distant guardians, but the ‘Sensation of Lightness’ and ‘Flickering Movement’ give him the confidence and subtle grace to test each footing gently, reducing the chance of a misstep causing a localized collapse or a noisy disturbance that could trigger a trap or alert slumbering entities.”
      • Hiding from a Search Party in a Cave System: “Cornered in a network of caves, Elara uses her footwraps and the environment. She finds a narrow fissure and activates ‘Moment of Absolute Stillness.’ She describes the feeling of becoming one with the cave’s silence, her breathing shallow, her feet utterly noiseless even on the gritty cave floor. The search party’s torchlight flickers past her hiding spot, their voices echoing, but her specific location remains an island of deep, unbetrayed quiet.”
    • Offensive Roleplay (Indirect Enablement & Reconnaissance):
      • Scouting an Enemy Camp: “Finn is tasked with scouting a well-guarded bandit encampment nestled in a rocky outcrop. The Fading Footwraps allow him to approach under the cover of dusk, his movements over stone and dry brush producing almost no sound. He can get close enough to observe sentry patterns and count numbers, the ‘Flickering Movement’ of his legs making him harder to spot if a guard’s gaze sweeps his general direction. He uses ‘Fleeting Glance Deflection’ when a guard unexpectedly turns, ensuring their gaze doesn’t quite focus on his concealed position.”
      • Retrieving an Artifact from a Guarded Natural Grotto: “A rare, glowing moss (the objective) grows in a grotto guarded by creatures that hunt by sound and subtle vibrations. Lyra, wearing the footwraps, describes her approach as ‘walking on still water.’ She can navigate the uneven, possibly damp floor of the grotto without a ripple of sound, harvest the moss, and retreat, leaving the guardians undisturbed. The inherent ‘Absence’ magic of the polypore in her wraps feels like a shield against their acute senses.”
      • Leading a Target into a Prepared Ambush Site Silently: “Kai has prepared a trap in a dense part of the forest. He needs to lure a specific, wary individual to the location without them suspecting they are being led. The Fading Footwraps allow him to move just ahead of his quarry, making just enough (non-footfall related) subtle noise to guide them, while his own passage remains ghostly silent, ensuring they don’t realize they are being expertly herded by someone moving with unnatural quietness.”

In every scenario, the Fading Footwraps [17] allow the wearer to engage with their environment in a uniquely unobtrusive way. They do not make one a master of all forms of stealth, but they provide a profound advantage in controlling the auditory and subtle visual aspects of one’s movement, turning the simple act of walking into an art of quiet passage and subtle misdirection.

Perception of Activation: When the wearer of the Fading Footwraps [17] consciously engages their more potent, albeit subtle, active magical properties – such as invoking a “Moment of Absolute Stillness” or triggering a “Fleeting Glance Deflection” – the perceptions for both the User and any potential Observer shift beyond the item’s constant passive effects. Activation here is an act of focused will or a reflexive trigger, drawing upon the deeper essence of the Silent Veil Polypore woven within.

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Sight:
      • Perception: Upon activating a heightened state, the User might perceive their own feet and lower legs as becoming even more indistinct to their downward glance, as if the material of the footwraps momentarily thickens into a deeper, more light-absorbent shadow. The immediate ground beneath their feet could seem to lose some of its texture or detail, visually “softening” their point of contact. When “Fleeting Glance Deflection” is triggered, there isn’t a visual change so much as an internal anticipation or intuitive sense that incoming casual sight will slide away.
      • Positives: Reinforces the feeling of becoming more deeply concealed or unobtrusive, boosting confidence in the success of the specific stealth maneuver being attempted. The visual feedback, however subtle, confirms the magic is responding to their will.
      • Negatives: The momentary visual indistinctness of their own feet could be slightly disorienting if they need to make a very precise, visually guided step in that exact instant without relying on proprioception.
    • Sound:
      • Perception: When invoking a “Moment of Absolute Stillness,” the change is profound. The already muffled quality of their steps vanishes into utter silence from their perspective. Any minute sound they might expect – the flex of leather, the faint brush of fabric, the compression of grit underfoot – is entirely absent. It is as if their feet are no longer interacting with the world in a way that generates sound. There might be an accompanying internal sensation of “auditory vacuum” localized around their feet.
      • Positives: Provides absolute certainty that their footfalls are making no noise whatsoever, crucial for extremely delicate situations. This can be immensely calming and focusing for the stealth-oriented User.
      • Negatives: The total absence of expected sensory feedback (the sound of their own steps) can be momentarily jarring or feel unnatural, potentially disrupting a very fine sense of balance if not accustomed to it.
    • Smell:
      • Perception: As the User focuses their intent to activate the footwraps’ deeper magic, the faint, earthy scent of damp wood and old forests, inherent to the polypore-infused material, might become briefly more noticeable to them, as if the essence of the wraps is “awakening” or responding.
      • Positives: This can act as a grounding sensory cue, a familiar scent that confirms the connection with the item’s magic.
      • Negatives: Unlikely to have any significant negatives, as the scent is described as faint and natural.
    • Taste:
      • Perception: Not applicable for activating wearable gear.
      • Positives: N/A.
      • Negatives: N/A.
    • Touch/Feel (Physical Sensation):
      • Perception: This is often the most distinct sensation during active magic use. When a “Moment of Absolute Stillness” is invoked, the User may feel the footwraps become exceptionally cool against their skin, and the sensation of contact with the ground might diminish further, as if they are walking on a dense, yielding cloud or a layer of profound quiet. For “Fleeting Glance Deflection,” there might be a brief, almost imperceptible tingle or a feeling of “static” in the wraps as they subtly warp ambient attention. A feeling of focused energy briefly courses through the material.
      • Positives: The tactile feedback confirms the magic is engaged. The sensation of increased lightness or detachment from the ground can enhance the feeling of stealth and grace.
      • Negatives: The coolness could be uncomfortable in very cold environments if unexpected. The feeling of tenuous contact with the ground might require more conscious effort to maintain perfect balance during complex maneuvers.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions (User):
      • Intensified Sense of Obscurity: The User feels their “presence” in relation to their lower body diminish sharply. It’s a tangible feeling of that part of themselves becoming less “real” or less part of the mundane sensory world, as if shrouded in an intangible veil of nothingness.
        • Positives: Greatly boosts the psychological aspect of stealth, making the User feel more effectively hidden and capable of subtle actions.
        • Negatives: This profound sense of partial “un-thereness” can be psychologically unsettling or induce a fleeting feeling of dissociation if the User is not mentally prepared for it.
      • Focused Stillness (Aetheric): When activating “Moment of Absolute Stillness,” the User might perceive the flow of ambient Ki-Aether or magical energies immediately around their feet becoming utterly calm, as if a small pocket of absolute energetic tranquility has formed.
        • Positives: Can enhance concentration and make the User feel more in tune with the subtle, quiet energies of their surroundings.
        • Negatives: For those highly sensitive to magical flows, this sudden local “void” or stillness in the aether could feel strange or even slightly oppressive.
      • Precognitive Nudge (for Fleeting Glance Deflection): The trigger for “Fleeting Glance Deflection” might feel less like a conscious activation and more like an intuitive, almost precognitive response – a sudden internal “nudge” or certainty that a casual gaze is incoming, prompting the reflexive magic of the wraps.
        • Positives: Allows for a very quick, almost unconscious, defensive reaction to maintain unobtrusiveness without needing constant vigilance.
        • Negatives: Relies on the User trusting this subtle internal prompting; if ignored or misinterpreted, the opportunity might be missed.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Sight:
      • Perception: If an Observer were somehow hyper-attuned and focused on the User when they activate “Moment of Absolute Stillness” (especially in low light), they might struggle even more than usual to visually track the User’s leg and foot movements; they might appear to blur excessively with shadows or seem to stutter in their motion. For “Fleeting Glance Deflection,” the effect is defined by its success: if an Observer’s casual glance sweeps towards the User, their attention simply… doesn’t lock on. They see the area, but the User doesn’t register as a point of interest; their mind immediately moves on. There’s no visible flash or distortion from the Observer’s point of view, only the effect of the User not being consciously noted.
      • Positives: (From User’s POV) The Observer fails to notice or properly track them, achieving the item’s purpose.
      • Negatives: (From User’s POV, if they wanted this specific observer to see something else but not them) The deflection is specific to the User being overlooked.
    • Sound:
      • Perception: During a “Moment of Absolute Stillness,” even an Observer with exceptionally keen hearing, listening intently under ideal conditions, would perceive no sound whatsoever from the User’s footsteps. This abrupt and total absence of expected sound where some minor noise (however muffled) was previously perceived can be quite uncanny.
      • Positives: (From User’s POV) Complete auditory stealth from footfalls.
      • Negatives: (From Observer’s POV) The sudden, unnatural silence if they were tracking the User by faint sounds might itself be an indicator that something unusual (perhaps magical) is occurring, even if they can no longer hear the steps.
    • Smell, Taste, Touch/Feel (Physical Sensation):
      • Perception: Not applicable for an Observer regarding the activation of these footwraps on the User.
      • Positives: N/A.
      • Negatives: N/A.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions (Observer with ESP capabilities):
      • Diminished Auric Signature: An aura-seeing Observer would likely perceive the auric field around the User’s lower legs and feet dimming considerably, becoming murky, or even appearing to momentarily “pinch off” or retract during active use. The usually vibrant colors might become desaturated and indistinct.
        • Positives: (From User’s POV) Indicates their magical signature related to movement is being suppressed.
        • Negatives: (From Observer’s POV) A clear sign that the User is employing some form of obscuring magic.
      • Localized Magical Ripple: A magically sensitive Observer might detect a very faint, brief shimmer or “void” in the local magical energies around the User’s feet as an active ability is engaged – a subtle but distinct manipulation of the aether.
        • Positives: (From User’s POV) Confirmation their magic is working.
        • Negatives: (From Observer’s POV) Alerts them to the use of an active magical item, even if its precise effect isn’t immediately clear.
      • Distorted Life Sense: If an Observer possesses a specialized sense for detecting life force or presence, the User, when activating the footwraps’ deeper magic, might seem to flicker in that sense, their “life signature” becoming fainter, more diffuse, or harder to pinpoint accurately, especially concerning their lower body.
        • Positives: (From User’s POV) Makes them harder to target or track by non-visual, life-detecting senses.
        • Negatives: (From Observer’s POV) Such a distortion can be unnatural and alarming, signaling that the target is not what they seem or is employing unusual abilities.

The perception of activating the Fading Footwraps [17] thus revolves around an intensification of their inherent “Absence” magic, providing the User with brief periods of profoundly enhanced stealth and unobtrusiveness, while presenting very subtle or consequentially negative (i.e., absence of expected perception) cues to any potential Observers.

The Silent Threadworker’s Pattern: Crafting the Fading Footwraps — This guide details the meticulous process for creating a pair of Fading Footwraps [17], attire designed for those who wish their passage through the world of Saṃsāra to be as unobtrusive as a falling shadow. The creation demands patience, specific materials, and a deep respect for the subtle magic of absence.

  • Materials Needed:
    • Silent Veil Polypore [42] Essence:
      • Requires three to four small, perfectly harvested and preserved caps of Silent Veil Polypore [42]. These must have been gathered according to the traditional quiet methods.
      • One portion to be dried completely in a dark, still environment until brittle, then ground into an exceptionally fine, almost ethereal, silvery-grey powder (yields approx. 2 tablespoons).
      • Alternatively, for a layered lining approach, thin slivers of the polypore are pressed and carefully infused with a clear, quick-drying natural resin like “Stillwood Sap” to create flexible, paper-thin sheets.
    • Primary Fabric/Leather:
      • Fabric Option (Preferred for subtle integration): Two bolts of densely spun “Shadow-Moss Thread.” This unique thread is created by blending fibers from the dark green moss found clinging to ancient, shadowed trees with the silk of the reclusive Saṃsāran “Nocturne Moth.” The resulting thread is incredibly strong, soft, and naturally absorbs light.
      • Leather Option: One prime hide of a mature Shadow-Deer or similarly dark, supple leather, tanned using traditional, quiet methods with dark berry and bark tannins. The leather must be of uniform thickness and without blemishes.
    • Inner Lining Material:
      • A roll of “Cave-Felt,” a thick, exceptionally soft, and naturally sound-absorbent felt made from the compacted under-wool of the Giant Cave Mole or densely packed fibers from specific subterranean plants. Color should be dark grey or black.
    • Binding & Stitching Components:
      • Spool of “Whisper-Thin Sinew Thread,” treated with beeswax for strength and silence, or an equivalent very fine, dark, magically inert thread.
      • Small pot of “Resin of Stillness,” a clear, flexible sealant made from the sap of slow-growing, ancient trees, used to protect and subtly bind the polypore essence if using the powdered method directly on fabric.
    • Herbal Infusion (for treatment):
      • A small bundle of “Quiet-Bloom Petals” and “Mute-Root Shavings” (non-magical herbs known for their scent-dampening and calming properties).
      • One cup of water collected from a stagnant, hidden forest pool or from dew gathered on a moonless night.
  • Tools Required:
    • For Polypore Preparation:
      • A non-metallic (ceramic, stone, or hardwood) mortar and pestle for grinding the dried polypore.
      • Fine silk or tightly woven linen sieves for ensuring powder consistency.
      • Dark, airtight containers for storing the prepared polypore.
      • Delicate carving tools if preparing pressed layers.
    • For Fabric Version:
      • A specialized small loom if weaving the Shadow-Moss Thread into fabric panels.
      • Sharp cutting shears designed for delicate fabrics.
      • An array of fine, sharp needles (bone or hardened wood preferred for ritualistic reasons, though fine steel is acceptable).
      • Tailor’s chalk or disappearing ink for marking patterns.
      • Smooth pressing iron (can be magically heated stone).
    • For Leather Version:
      • Sharp leather-cutting knives (obsidian blades are favored by traditionalists).
      • Awls of various sizes.
      • Harness needles and sinew thread.
      • Edge beveller and burnisher.
      • Soft mallets (rawhide or wood).
      • Applicators for oils and powders (soft cloths, fine brushes).
    • General Crafting Environment:
      • A dedicated workspace that can be kept quiet, dimly lit, and free from drafts or sudden disturbances.
      • Bowls for infusions and mixing.
      • Measuring tools (marked sticks, knotted cords).
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Master Herbalist (or equivalent deep knowledge of Magical Flora): Essential for the correct identification, assessment of potency, and ritualistically sound preparation (drying, powdering, infusing) of the Silent Veil Polypore [42]. Understanding how to handle it without diminishing its subtle magic is paramount.
    • Expert Weaver/Tailor OR Expert Leatherworker: The mundane craftsmanship of the footwraps must be exemplary. The fit must be perfect, the materials treated with utmost care, and the construction durable yet incredibly light and flexible.
    • Artisan of Quiet Infusion: This specialized skill involves more than just mixing ingredients. It requires an innate or learned ability to work in a state of focused calm, imbuing materials with subtle magical properties through intent, ritual, and precise handling during specific environmental conditions (e.g., specific lunar phases, times of day associated with stillness). This might be represented by a character having a specific “Craft Subtle Magic Item” ability or succeeding on a challenging Lore (Nature) or Lore (Magic) check related to infusion.
    • Profound Patience: The crafting process is slow, meticulous, and cannot be rushed.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • The Polypore’s Preparation (The Heart of Stillness):
      • This step must be performed in near-total silence and very dim light. The chosen Silent Veil Polypore caps are either slowly dried over several days in a dark, airy space until brittle, then painstakingly ground to an impalpable powder using the non-metallic mortar and pestle, sifting multiple times.
      • Alternatively, for the layered method, thin, even slivers are carefully cut from fresh polypore, pressed between weighted boards for several days in a cool, dark place, then delicately painted with the thinnest possible layer of Stillwood Sap or a similar clear resin to stabilize them into flexible sheets.
    • Imbuing the Base Material (Weaving the Absence):
      • Fabric Method: If creating the fabric from Shadow-Moss Thread, the finely powdered polypore is either meticulously spun directly into the threads during their final plying (a highly skilled task) or dusted onto the warp threads on the loom before weaving, with each pass of the shuttle accompanied by a focused meditative state. The woven panels are then gently pressed.
      • Leather Method: The prepared leather hide is first softened and made supple using traditional techniques. Then, the polypore powder is combined with a neutral, deeply penetrating conditioning oil (e.g., refined shadow-panther fat). This imbued oil is then slowly and repeatedly worked into the grain of the leather over several hours, kneading and stretching the hide until the powder seems to become one with its very structure.
      • Both methods involve a quiet ritual, perhaps chanting soft, repetitive mantras of silence or focusing on the concept of “un-being.”
    • Crafting the Soundless Lining:
      • The Cave-Felt is cut to match the patterns for the inner lining of the footwraps. Before assembly, this felt might be lightly steamed over an infusion of Quiet-Bloom Petals and Mute-Root Shavings to further enhance its sound-absorbing qualities and neutralize any inherent odors. Some crafters will also dust this lining very lightly with any remaining polypore powder.
    • The Silent Assembly:
      • Using the Whisper-Thin Sinew Thread, the outer imbued material (fabric or leather) is meticulously stitched to the Cave-Felt lining. Seams are kept flat and reinforced to prevent any rubbing or creaking. The design ensures the footwraps will conform perfectly to the wearer’s feet, allowing for natural movement without excess material.
      • Every stitch is made with care, the crafter often working in rhythm with their own quiet breathing. If pressed polypore layers are used, they are carefully placed between the outer material and the felt lining before the final stitching.
    • Final Attunement (The Sealing of Silence):
      • Once fully assembled, the Fading Footwraps [17] are not immediately ready. They are typically placed in a specially prepared dark, silent box or chamber, perhaps cushioned on a bed of moss from the polypore’s native habitat, for a period of no less than three sunless days and three moonless nights. This “resting” or “settling” period is believed to allow the imbued magic of the Silent Veil Polypore to fully integrate with the mundane materials, attuning the entire item to the essence of absence.

Crafting Fading Footwraps [17] is less a mere act of construction and more a meditative ritual, where the artisan’s skill, patience, and deep understanding of the quiet energies of Saṃsāra are paramount to success.

Moon-Shadow Weaver and the Sandals of No Sound

Hear now, for this telling, it is old, its edges frayed by the many mouths that have shaped it, like a river stone smoothed by endless currents. It speaks of the first Fading Footwraps, those coverings for the feet that drink sound and make a walker like unto a breath of wind in an empty ruin.

In an age when Saṃsāra, it was still mapping its own secret places, there stood a great citadel, high on a mountain that scraped the belly of the storm clouds. And within this citadel, a treasure of immense meaning was guarded. Or perhaps, it was a prisoner of great import. The old words, they are unclear on this point, like looking at a face through thick river-ice. What is known, it is this: the guardian of this thing, or person, was a creature of many ears. Yes, many ears. Some scrolls say it was a Bat-King, with ears like tattered black sails, each able to hear a mouse sigh in its sleep a league distant. Others say it was a Golem of Echoing Crystal, that every tiny sound made near it, it would be sung back a thousand times louder, a thunder of betrayal.

And there was one who needed to pass this guardian. A woman she was, or so the glyphs suggest, known only as the Moon-Shadow Weaver. For she moved often in the hours of the silver eye of night, and her craft, it was the weaving of threads both mundane and… other. She was not a warrior of loud clangor, nor a mage of fire-speak. Her strength, it was in her quiet heart, her patient hands, and her knowing of the world’s hushed secrets.

The Moon-Shadow Weaver, she knew of the child Pip, and the Quiet Shelf-Growth, the Silent Veil Polypore, yes. She had sought it herself in the deep, still places, and understood its power to make a small thing, or a small sound, become as nothing to the senses. But to carry the raw fungus, it was clumsy for tasks of great delicacy. And to eat it, its magic was for the whole self, but what if only the steps needed to be ghosts? What if the hands needed to be free, the mind clear of the fungus’s full embrace of un-being?

“A way must be,” she thought, her thoughts like the careful placing of threads on a loom, “to bind the polypore’s quietness to the very act of walking. To make sandals, or wraps for the feet, that carry the silence within their making.”

So, she did try. First, she took the fresh polypore, and she did try to glue its soft plates to the soles of her worn leather shoes. But the fungus, it crumbled, and its magic, it fled like a startled bird. Then, she did try to make a paste of it, with rare saps, and paint it upon her foot-coverings. But the paste, it dried and cracked, and the silence it offered, it was thin as a winter leaf. Many were her trials, in her small hut where only the moon did watch her work. The air, it was kept still. The light, it was from a single, shaded candle. Her movements, they were slow, her breathing, a shallow tide. For she knew the polypore, it loved the quiet heart.

Then, a dream-seeing came to her, or perhaps it was a memory fragment from a life lived under a different sky, among a people who wove secrets into their very garments. In this seeing, she saw threads, dark as the new moon sky, being spun not just from plant or beast, but with a dust of something more. A dust that held stillness.

She awoke, and her path, it was clear. She took the driest, most perfect Silent Veil Polypores, those that had rested long in darkness. With a grinding stone made from a river rock that had known no loud rushing water, she did grind them. Slowly. Patiently. Until the powder, it was finer than a moth’s wing-dust, silvery-grey and carrying the scent of ancient, undisturbed earth.

Then, she took the darkest, softest leather, from a creature that walked only in shadow. And into this leather, as she worked it, oiling it with rendered fat of the night-adder, she did knead the polypore powder. With each fold, each pressing, she whispered intentions of silence, of unmaking sound. For the inner part, she found a felt, thick and soft as a burrow-thing’s pelt, and this too, she did dust lightly with the precious powder.

For another pair, she took threads spun from the silk of the cave-spider, dyed moss-green with lichens that grew only where no sun touched. And into these threads, as she re-spun them on her small, hand-turned spindle, she let the polypore dust mingle, becoming one with the fiber. And when she wove this thread into strong, pliable bands, the pattern, it was one of intricate shadow and muted light.

The stitching, it was done with sinew from a creature that made no cry even in its dying, and with needles of bone, for metal, she felt, was too loud for such work. And when the footwraps were made, each pair a masterpiece of quiet craft, she did not use them straight away. No. She placed them in a dark, earthen jar, sealed with beeswax, and buried them for a full turning of the moon’s phases at the roots of the oldest, most silent tree she knew, the very tree where Pip might once have hidden. This, she did, so the magic of the polypore, it could fully marry with the leather, the fabric, the threads, until they breathed silence as one.

And when the moon, it had shown all its faces and hidden again, the Moon-Shadow Weaver, she retrieved the footwraps. They looked simple, yes, dark and unassuming. But when she did put them on, her feet, they felt as if they touched not the ground, but a cushion of deep moss. And when she walked upon the stone floor of her hut, there was… nothing. No scuff. No tap. No whisper of movement. Only her own body’s passage through the air.

Then, she went forth, to the citadel on the high mountain. And as she approached the place of the Many-Eared Guardian, she put on the Fading Footwraps. The wind, it howled about the peaks, but her steps, they were not part of that sound, nor any other. She moved through corridors where before, even a falling pin would have been a shout. The Bat-King, its great ears did twitch and turn, sensing the world’s vibrations, but her footfalls, they offered no vibration to sense. The Crystal Golem, its facets did gleam, ready to catch and throw back any sound, but her passage, it gave no sound to catch.

She passed the guardian. The treasure, or the prisoner, was reached. What happened then, the old tellings, they grow dim and muddled, for her task was not about the end, but about the passing. And the passing, it was made possible by the Fading Footwraps, born of a need, a dream, and the patient, silent craft of the Moon-Shadow Weaver. And the secret of their making, though guarded, it was sometimes shared, with those who also needed to walk paths where silence was more precious than gold.

Moral of the Story: True mastery, it is often found not in the loud deed, but in the quiet skill that makes the impossible passage as simple as a shadow’s glide.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)

Wraps of Whispered Passage

  • Wondrous item, common
  • These dark, soft footwraps are made of either undyed leather or moss-green fabric, with a downy, felt-like lining. An almost imperceptible silvery-grey powder is worked into their fibers.
  • While wearing these footwraps, your footsteps make significantly less sound. You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks that rely on moving silently.
  • In addition, you can use the footwraps to invoke two special effects, each usable once until you finish a long rest:
    • Moment of Stillness: As a bonus action, you can declare you are activating this property. For the next minute, your footsteps make no sound whatsoever, regardless of the surface you are moving across. During this time, creatures have disadvantage on any Wisdom (Perception) check made to visually track the movement of your feet and lower legs if you are in dim light or darkness.
    • Fleeting Deflection: If a creature you can see makes a Wisdom (Perception) check to notice you and you are not hidden from it, you can use your reaction to subtly alter their attention. Unless the creature is actively searching for you or already considers you a threat, their casual glance is likely to slide past you without registering your presence as significant. The GM might rule this imposes disadvantage on the creature’s check, or that they simply overlook you if the check isn’t critically high.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

Wrappings of the Unmarked Trail

  • These supple foot coverings are crafted from dark, treated animal hides or densely woven plant fibers, lined with an unusually soft, muted material. They are sometimes found in the possession of certain reclusive communities or individuals who practice arts of silence and evasion, and are said to contain dust from fungi that “drink” sound.
  • Mechanics:
    • When worn, the Wrappings of the Unmarked Trail grant the Investigator a distinct advantage in moving without sound.
    • Passive: The wearer gains one bonus die (roll an additional tens die and use the better result) on all Stealth rolls made to move quietly. Observers making Listen rolls to detect the wearer’s footsteps suffer one penalty die.
    • Active – Absolute Quietude: Once per day (or per significant period of investigation, at the Keeper’s discretion), the Investigator can consciously will the Wrappings to become utterly silent. For the next 10 minutes, their footsteps make no sound that can be detected by mundane hearing, regardless of the surface. This might allow them to walk across a creaking floorboard without it uttering a sound.
    • Active – Fade from Notice: Once per day, if the Investigator is in a situation where they might be casually spotted (but are not the direct focus of an active search), they can attempt to invoke this property. They should make a Luck roll; if successful, any single, casual attempt by an NPC to notice them in that moment simply fails – the NPC’s attention is drawn elsewhere, or their mind simply doesn’t register the Investigator’s presence as noteworthy.
  • Prolonged use or understanding the uncanny silence these wraps provide might unsettle some Investigators (Keeper may call for a Sanity roll, 0/1, if the silence feels particularly unnatural or “empty”).

Blades in the Dark

Eel-Skin Wraps

  • Soft, dark wraps for the feet, supposedly treated with rare fungal spores and oils that deaden sound and fool the eye. They feel disturbingly light and pliant. (1 load)
  • Mechanics:
    • When you wear these wraps, you are exceptionally light on your feet and your movements are harder to discern.
    • Passive: Gain +1d to Prowl rolls when trying to move silently or avoid being noticed while moving in shadows or dim light.
    • Active – Ghost Step: Once per score, you can activate the wraps’ deeper magic (may cost 0 or 1 stress, GM’s call). For the duration of one significant infiltration attempt or for a few minutes in a tense situation, your footsteps are completely silent. You cannot be detected by normal hearing. Furthermore, casual glances from mundane NPCs are less likely to register your presence; they might overlook you unless they have a specific reason to be watching for you. This could be represented by improving the position or effect level of a relevant Prowl or Finesse roll.

Knave

Silent Moss Treads

  • Item Slot: 1 (Footwear)
  • These are soft, dark green or grey footwraps, woven from a strange, moss-like fiber treated with a silvery, dust-like powder. They feel oddly light and muffle all sound of your steps.
  • Description & Effect:
    • Passive: While wearing these treads, your footsteps make no sound that can be heard by ordinary hearing, regardless of the surface you are walking on. You automatically succeed on any task where the primary challenge is moving silently via footfalls (e.g., sneaking past someone whose attention is based on hearing footsteps). If a save vs. Dexterity is required to move silently, you have Advantage.
    • Active – Fade from Sight (Limited Use): Once per day, you can will the treads to subtly deflect attention. For the next minute, if a creature is not already aware of your presence or actively looking for you, they must succeed on a challenging mental save (e.g., vs. Willpower or Wisdom, difficulty set by Referee) to consciously notice you, even if you are in their line of sight, provided you are not performing overtly aggressive or attention-grabbing actions. You appear as an unremarkable part of the background.

Fate Core / Fate Condensed

Whisper-Weave Gaiters

  • These are soft, dark foot coverings, seemingly woven from shadows and moss, that feel unnaturally light and conform perfectly to the feet.
  • Mechanics:
    • When a character wears the Whisper-Weave Gaiters, they gain the situation Aspect: “Treading on Silence Itself.”
    • This Aspect can be invoked once for free on an Overcome or Create an Advantage action where silent movement, stealthy approaches, or avoiding auditory detection are crucial. This could apply to skills like Stealth, Burglary, or any relevant approach.
    • After the free invocation, the Aspect may be invoked further by spending a Fate Point as usual, for as long as the Game Master deems the Aspect relevant (typically while the footwraps are worn and their magic is pertinent).
  • Special Properties (represent active magics):
    • Moment of Absolute Stillness: Once per session, the player can declare their character is drawing upon the deepest magic of the gaiters. For the current scene, their footfalls become completely inaudible, regardless of the surface. Any opposition relying solely on hearing their steps automatically fails to detect them in this manner. This might also grant a +2 bonus to a Stealth roll where silence is paramount.
    • Fleeting Glance Deflection: Once per session, when an NPC is about to casually notice the character (and the character is not otherwise drawing attention), the player can spend a Fate Point (or the GM might allow it for free as part of the item’s power) to declare that the NPC’s attention is conveniently diverted, and the character remains overlooked.

Numenera & Cypher System

Null-Sound Footpads

  • These appear as flexible, dark grey or green pads made of a strange, felt-like organic material that feels cool to the touch and absorbs sound. They are designed to be worn over existing footwear or as standalone soft shoes.
  • Type: Artifact
  • Level: 1d6+1 (typically Level 3 or 4)
  • Form: A pair of soft, pliable footpads or minimalist shoes.
  • Effect:
    • Passive: While worn, the Null-Sound Footpads muffle the wearer’s footsteps. The wearer gains an asset on all Speed-based tasks for moving silently and on all Stealth tasks where avoiding auditory detection is a primary factor.
    • Active – Stillness Field: Depletion: 1 in 1d6 (or 0 on a specific GM Intrusion related to their sound). For one minute, the area in immediate proximity (short range) to the wearer’s feet becomes a zone of profound quiet regarding their own movements. Any sound their footfalls or lower leg movements would make is nullified. Furthermore, during this minute, casual visual attention is less likely to fixate on their lower body movements, as if they are slightly blurred or indistinct in that area (difficulty of perception tasks to visually track their feet is increased by one step).
    • Active – Minor Presence Obfuscation: Depletion: 1 in 1d6 (can be the same depletion roll as Stillness Field if activated together or separately). Once, before the next depletion roll, if an NPC is making a routine or casual perception check to notice the wearer (and is not actively engaged with or searching for them), that NPC makes the check with a one-step penalty to their roll. Depletion: 1 in 1d6 (roll when an active ability is used or at GM discretion after prolonged passive use in a demanding situation).

Pathfinder (2nd Edition)

Silent Step Wraps

  • Worn Item, Footwear
  • Price 40 gp Level 3
  • Usage worn footwear; Bulk L
  • These soft, dark wraps are crafted from either treated leather or dense, moss-colored fabric, with an almost invisible silvery powder worked into their fibers. They feel exceptionally light and quiet.
    • When you wear Silent Step Wraps, you gain a +1 item bonus to Stealth checks. When you Sneak, you can move up to your full Speed if you choose, instead of half your Speed, without increasing the normal circumstance penalty from the Sneak action.
    • Activate [one-action] (Envision); Frequency once per day; Effect You invoke the wraps’ deeper magic, creating a Moment of Absolute Stillness. For 1 minute, your footsteps make no sound at all, granting you the effects of a 1st-level silence spell, but the emanation is only a 5-foot radius centered on you, moves with you, and affects only sounds created by your movement. Furthermore, during this time, creatures take a -1 circumstance penalty to Perception checks to visually pinpoint or track your feet and lower legs, especially in dim light or if you are partially concealed.
    • Activate [reaction] (Envision); Trigger A creature that you are not hidden from attempts a Perception check as part of a casual scan or undirected observation (not as part of a Search activity targeting you or your square); Frequency once per day; Effect You cause a Fleeting Glance Deflection. The triggering creature takes a -2 circumstance penalty to that Perception check against you.

Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE)

Still-Tread Wraps

  • These are supple footwraps made of dark, treated hide or a very dense, quiet fabric. They are imbued with dust from a rare, sound-absorbing fungus.
  • Effect:
    • Passive: While wearing the Still-Tread Wraps, the wearer gains a +1 bonus to Stealth rolls made to move quietly. Sounds made by their footsteps are significantly muffled, imposing a -2 penalty on any Notice rolls made specifically to hear their movement.
    • Active – Moment of Utter Silence (Power Points: 1-2): Once per session as an action, the wearer can activate this ability by spending 1 Power Point. For the next 5 rounds, their footsteps are completely inaudible. If 2 Power Points are spent, this effect also makes their lower body movements harder to visually track, imposing a -1 penalty on Notice rolls to spot them if they are moving in dim light or have any cover. (This assumes the character has a Power Point pool; if not, this could be usable once per session for free, or the GM might treat it as a unique item property).
    • Active – Fade from View (Limited Use): Once per session, if an NPC is about to casually notice the wearer (but isn’t actively searching for them), the wearer can use a free action to make an opposed Stealth vs. the NPC’s Notice. The wearer gains a +2 bonus on this specific roll. If successful, the NPC’s attention slides past them. Weight: 1 Cost: $300 (reflects the magical crafting).

Shadowrun (6th World Edition)

Umbral Striders

  • These appear as custom-fitted, dark, soft-soled boots or heavy wraps made from advanced polymers blended with biofibers that seem to absorb sound and light. They are highly sought after by infiltration specialists and shadow operatives who value ultimate discretion in their footwork.
  • Type: Special Stealth Gear (Rating 2 or 3)
  • Effect:
    • Passive: The Umbral Striders confer a +[Rating] dice pool bonus to Sneaking tests specifically related to moving silently. Additionally, environmental modifiers for noisy terrain (e.g., gravel, creaky floors) are reduced by 1 for the wearer. The sound of the wearer’s footsteps is exceptionally difficult for mundane audio sensors to pick up.
    • Active – Stillness Protocol: Once per scene (or requiring a refresh period if cyberware), the wearer can activate this mode as a Minor Action. For [Rating] Combat Turns, their footsteps become completely inaudible to normal hearing and standard audio surveillance. During this time, any Perception tests to specifically detect their footfalls automatically fail, and their lower body movements are harder to track visually in low light (imposing a -[Rating/2, rounded up] dice pool penalty to visual perception tests focused on their leg movements).
    • Active – Peripheral Fade: Once per scene, if the wearer is not the direct focus of attention and a mundane NPC’s casual glance might detect them, the wearer can spend 1 Edge to cause that NPC to overlook them, their attention simply sliding past as if the wearer were an unremarkable part of the scenery. Availability: 8R (Restricted) Cost: Rating x 4,000 nuyen.

Starfinder

Silent Drift Boots

  • Level 3; Price 1,450 credits; Bulk L
  • These sleek, dark grey or matte black boots are crafted from a sound-dampening polymer interwoven with threads that seem to subtly refract light around the wearer’s feet. The soles are remarkably pliable yet durable.
  • Type Worn Item (Boots, technological); Armor Slot Feet
  • Effect:
    • Passive: While wearing Silent Drift Boots, you gain a +2 item bonus to Stealth checks. You can attempt to move at your full speed when using Stealth without the usual –5 penalty. Additionally, the DC of Perception checks to hear your footsteps is increased by 2.
    • Active – Null-Sound Emitters (1/day): As a swift action, you can activate the boots’ null-sound emitters. For 1 minute, your footsteps produce no sound discernible by ordinary hearing. During this time, you automatically succeed on the auditory component of any Stealth check made to move silently. Furthermore, creatures attempting to target your feet or legs with attacks of opportunity based on your movement do so with a -2 penalty to their attack roll due to the visual distortion around your lower limbs.
    • Active – Attention Slip (1/day): When a creature makes a Perception check as a routine or casual observation that might detect you (and you are not currently hidden or in combat with it), you can use your reaction to activate this function. The creature takes a –4 penalty to that specific Perception check against you.

Traveller (Mongoose 2nd Edition)

Quietude Treads

  • These advanced foot coverings are made from layered, sound-absorbent meta-materials, often appearing as soft boots or thick, conforming wraps. They are a product of high-tech manufacturing, sometimes incorporating subtle anti-sensor fabrics.
  • Effect:
    • Passive: The Quietude Treads grant the wearer DM+1 on all Stealth skill checks where quiet movement is crucial. The effective range at which normal human hearing can detect the wearer’s footsteps is halved (e.g., if normally heard at 20m, now heard at 10m). Against standard audio sensors (TL8-10), the difficulty to detect the wearer by sound of movement is increased by one level (e.g., from Routine to Difficult).
    • Active – Silent Mode (TL 10+): Once per day, or powered by a miniature energy cell (requiring 1 cell charge per use, cell lasts for 5 uses), the wearer can engage Silent Mode for up to 10 minutes. In this mode, their footsteps are completely inaudible to biological hearing and standard audio sensors (TL 10 or lower). Any checks to detect them by sound of movement automatically fail.
    • Active – Glance Redirection Field (TL 10+): Once per day (or shares power source with Silent Mode), if an individual is about to make a casual observation check (Recon or Awareness) that might spot the wearer (and the wearer is not otherwise acting conspicuously), the wearer can trigger this. The individual making the check suffers DM-2 on that specific roll to notice the wearer. Tech Level: 9 (passive benefits), 10+ (for active modes) Cost: Cr 2,500 (TL9 passive version); Cr 5,000 (TL10+ active mode version, plus cost of energy cells if applicable).

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (4th Edition)

Mirkwood Walkers

  • These appear as soft leather boots or tightly wound fabric wraps, dyed in the dark greens and browns of the deep forest. They are unnaturally light and seem to cling to the feet. It is said that Wood Elf scouts or skilled human trappers who have learned secrets of the deep woods sometimes craft such items, weaving enchantments of silence into them with rare forest components.
  • Type: Worn Item (Footwear), Magical Apparel
  • Effect:
    • Passive: While wearing the Mirkwood Walkers, the character gains a +15 bonus to Stealth Tests made to move quietly. Furthermore, they may ignore one environmental factor that would normally impose a penalty on such Stealth Tests (e.g., noisy undergrowth like dry leaves, shallow water, or loose gravel is treated as normal ground for them).
    • Active – Path of Utter Stillness: Once per day, the wearer may declare they are invoking the Path of Utter Stillness as a Free Action. For the next minute (6 rounds), their footsteps make absolutely no sound, regardless of the surface. Any Test made to hear their movement automatically fails. During this time, their lower leg and foot movements also become harder to follow in anything but direct, bright light, imposing a -1 SL penalty on any Opposed Tests if an enemy attempts to predict their footing or strike at their legs based on movement.
    • Active – Shadow’s Passing: Once per day, if an NPC is about to make a routine Awareness Test that might spot the character (and the character is not drawing significant attention to themselves), the character may choose to invoke this effect. The NPC makes their Awareness Test with a -2 SL penalty for the purpose of noticing the character. Lore: Crafted using leather from deer that have never been startled, or threads spun from night-blooming shadow-flax, and treated with an infusion of crushed Silent Veil Polypore and dew collected from cobwebs in ancient, undisturbed parts of forests like the Mirkwood or Laurelorn. Availability: Rare.
