Symbol 27 of the Shielded Eye

Lore: This symbol draws from ancient tribal beliefs. Many nomadic clans worshipped celestial bodies, believing that averting one’s gaze from the harsh desert sun or blinding moon preserved inner fortitude. This ritual became ingrained, signifying those who sought respite from the overwhelming.

Graphic Appearance: A closed eye with stylized lashes resembling rays of an eclipsed sun or shrouded moon. Surrounding the eye could be geometric patterns mimicking sand ripples or starlight.

Ideas Represented: It signifies a defense against external influence and sensory overload.  This might manifest as emotional withdrawal, an unwillingness to be seen, or an aversion to situations that cause distress or require vulnerability.

Concept of Symbol: This is primarily a protective symbol, representing a shielding of the self.

Type of Symbol: A subtle but potent personal ward or marker of internal resistance.

Motivation: Characters bearing this symbol likely experienced past instances of emotional or mental intrusion, leaving them highly sensitive to stimuli and fiercely guarded. It could come from trauma, betrayal, or even simple sensory overload in a world of intense magic.

Use: Etched small on jewelry, a barely-visible tattoo, or woven discreetly on the inside lining of clothing.

Positives: This symbol acts as a silent signal to the perceptive, aiding those who crave a degree of peace or privacy. It may act as a ward against those inclined to probing minds or manipulating emotions.

Negatives: Could signify extreme reclusiveness, leading to difficulty connecting with others or refusing aid. Overuse of this mental shielding might even make the wearer paranoid or stunted in their emotional growth.

Fable of the Weeping Star

In the hush before the world stirred, when starlight spilled like broken jewels over endless sands, there walked a maiden named Isra. Her heart shimmered brighter than moonlight, her spirit as open as the desert winds. Yet, under the sun’s relentless gaze, Isra wept. The weight of joys shared, sorrows witnessed, a thousand truths and lies… it was too much.

One day, lost to the dunes, she stumbled upon a withered crone, her eyes milky pools where starlight drowned.  “Your burden scorches your soul,” the crone rasped, “The world drinks from your well, yet offers naught but thirst.” With trembling hands, the crone traced a glyph upon Isra’s skin – a closed eye, lashed like a shrouded moon.  And a veil fell over Isra’s tender heart.

No longer did laughter pierce her spirit so deeply, nor did tears fall like summer rain. Isra shielded herself. Her burden lightened, but warmth grew distant. Tribesfolk watched her change;  Isra the Bright became Isra the Guarded. Yet, when chaos came, when hearts faltered, she felt only a dull echo of fear. When a child lay parched, only fleeting pity stirred.

Isra had sought solitude, but what she held was merely emptiness. And so, upon her weather-worn arm, under the faded glyph of the eye, she etched a tear – a drop of defiant water amidst the dust.  The veil within thinned, just a flicker.

Years passed.  Isra led not from the front, but the silent heart of her people. Her eyes remained guarded, yet now… they truly saw. Laughter still felt faint, but she found precious joy amidst quiet smiles. Sorrow was ever close, but also the strength to shoulder it beside others. No longer was she adrift on a sea of the world’s emotions, but a lighthouse upon the shore.

Moral of the Story: To close one’s eyes to the world offers relief, but true peace lies in choosing what to behold, and what to turn away from.

Suggested conversions to other systems:

Call of Cthulhu

  • Knowledge & Sanity Mechanics:
    • Deep Lore: Bearers of the symbol gain a bonus on Knowledge rolls regarding ancient nomadic tribes and symbol lore, giving them potential clues towards understanding older threats.
    • Sanity Break: If the user attempts to actively resist potent mental and emotional attacks through sheer willpower, this acts as a buffer. Reduces initial Sanity loss with the drawback of becoming emotionally distanced for a time afterwards.

Blades in the Dark

  • Faction Association: This mark fits secretive groups dealing with mental manipulation. Perhaps the Spirit Wardens utilize it for agents going deep undercover, or occult factions use it to shield from possession.
  • Mechanic:
    • Resist Action: Adds bonus dice to Resist rolls against coercion, supernatural charm, or effects which directly target emotional pain and memories.
    • Downtime Action: After resisting such influences, the character must engage in a meditative, isolating downtime activity to ‘recover’ emotional armor. If skipped, they suffer Stress penalties to social actions.

Dungeons & Dragons

  • Minor Item Enchantment: Symbol 27 doesn’t translate as a potent spell, but an inscription with subtle protective enchantment.
    • Protection for the Sensitive: Grants advantage on saving throws against spells and effects directly targeting a character’s Wisdom score. This makes it good for bards, clerics, those vulnerable to illusions and mind-influencing magic.
    • Optional Flaw: After each successful use, the wearer could temporarily grow emotionally detached, hindering them on Charisma checks for the rest of the adventuring day.

Knave

  • Character Trait: Rather than a stat block, it aligns with thematic Knave traits.
    • “Bearing the Shielded Eye”: Grants automatic success (at a cost) when the character withdraws or shuts down to protect themselves from emotionally-charged situations. The cost could be an Item slot loss, suffering physical exhaustion, etc. Powerful, but emphasizes the negative implications.

Fate

  • Aspect: “Shielded Eye: Protector and Burden” becomes a complex character Aspect.
    • Invoke: Bonus when trying to shut down emotionally to withstand prying, manipulation, or to resist intense magical influence targeting their mental state.
    • Compel: The compels become very potent. This might hinder empathy, drive them to isolation, or create situations where they can’t connect emotionally even when desired.

Numenera & Cypher System

  • Cypher or Artifact: Symbol 27 is well-suited to being a single-use Cypher or a minor artifact remnant.
    • Cypher: User becomes impervious to mental probing or emotional manipulation for a brief duration. Can even act as a psychic block in the Ninth World’s datasphere.
    • Artifact: An ancient amulet/tattoo grants +1 asset on resisting influence-based effects with the lingering consequence of temporary emotional detachment, reflected mechanically to make it harder to aid and bond with others.

Pathfinder

  • Mental Focus Item: This is a boon to non-martial character builds seeking a minor protective element.
    • Amulet of the Shielded Eye: Wearer gets +2 circumstance bonus to Will saves against effects targeting emotions (fear, charm, possession, etc.), but with a temporary -1 on Diplomacy checks if activated due to becoming stoic and detached.
    • Variant: For clerics, this could be a domain power boost – stronger for saving throws, but makes healing touch spells less effective to reflect emotional distance.

Savage Worlds

  • Edge/Hindrance: Symbol 27 could be both an Edge and a Hindrance.
    • Edge: “Mind Shield” gives the character a Benny to Soak mental/emotional effects but could trigger…
    • Hindrance (Minor): “Emotionally Withdrawn”. Player gains a negative modifier to Persuasion rolls or whenever needing to build trust/camaraderie, especially at moments of vulnerability.

Shadowrun

  • Metamagic/Focus: Symbol 27 resonates with the concept of mental discipline central to magical traditions.
    • Metamagic Initiation: An adept may learn this during initiation for mages or awakened characters tied to intuition-focused traditions. It increases their resistance against astral probes, magical manipulation, and social “hacking”.
    • Focus: For those less magically inclined, a small item bearing the symbol boosts Willpower dice pools when focusing to resist mental assault (interrogations, magical coercion, possession attempts).

Starfinder

  • Mystic Connection or Item Infusion:
    • Mystic Connection: Symbol 27 could be one of a Solarian’s revelations linked to building inner serenity. Grants temporary bonus to saves against mind-affecting powers at the cost of reducing their Charisma-linked skill checks as their demeanor becomes detached.
    • Item Infusion: “Amulet of Shielded Will” gives advantage on the specific saves mentioned above but could temporarily limit skill checks tied to empathy or understanding others’ motivations.

Traveller

  • Reputation & Psychological Effect: The Shielded Eye’s meaning changes in Traveller’s grounded setting.
    • Reputation Mark: Worn openly, this mark signifies emotional detachment or stoicism. Useful amongst telepathically inclined races when negotiating, as they project less to read. However, this makes building close relationships and gaining trust much harder.
    • Trauma Indicator: In grittier campaigns, those bearing the symbol may be treated with cautious pity as victims of psychic intrusion or experimentation, as self-defense mechanisms can leave such psychological ‘marks’.

Warhammer (Fantasy or 40K)

  • Ward for Troubled Souls: This symbol is tailored to settings rife with corrupting influences.
    • WH Fantasy: Mark worn by warrior priests undergoing harsh mental conditioning to resist Chaos temptations. It buffs Willpower against fear and possession in exchange for making them seem cold and impersonal.
    • WH 40k: Utilized by Inquisitor acolytes who must witness horrors without flinching. This grants minor psyker resistance with the unsettling drawback of dampening empathy towards the “little people” of the Imperium.
