From: Registratus
-
- Tier Classification: Tier 4 (Very Rare).
- Description: A foot-long, four-sided stylus forged from cold-rolled star iron, tipped with a fine diamond point capable of scratching legible script into tempered steel, dragon scales, or granite blocks.
- Historical Lore: Bestowed only upon High Bailiffs of the church who oversee international trade registries between island nations, this stylus was famously used during the Great Sinking Crisis to inventory the floating hulls before cloud anchorages were certified.
- Offensive Utility: Counts as an attuned piercing weapon that deals standard base piercing damage plus 4d10 tier damage on a successful strike; when hitting an enemy equipped with magical gear, the stylus channels the Audit of Liability, forcing the target to roll an immediate saving throw or have one randomly determined attuned item immediately unattuned.
- Defensive Reaction: When targeted by a magical projectile or spell attack, the wielder may spend their reaction to trace a geometric void mark in the air, converting the incoming arcane force into raw mana points added directly into their personal Mana Boost pool (capped at 40 points).
- Divine Restriction: If held or openly carried by an avatar below Tier 4, the item inflicts severe metaphysical rejection, causing the bearer to lose hit points at irregular intervals determined by rolling two d4 dice until released.
Expanded Specifications for Registry Designation 602715
- Specific Gear Slot:
- Hand Slot (Primary or Off-hand), functioning interchangeably as an attuned piercing melee/ranged implement, an official judicial focus, and a precision scribing tool.
- Can be holstered directly into a specialized leather forearm scabbard mounted across the Arm Slot without occupying that slot’s primary protective shielding allowances.
- Detailed Description:
- Measures precisely twelve inches in length with a squared, four-sided tapered cross-section three-eighths of an inch wide at the pommel, narrowing to an unyielding point.
- Forged from dense meteoric star iron exhibiting a deep, charcoal-blue hue with faint silvery crystalline patterns visible across its cold-rolled bevels.
- The tip consists of a master-cut industrial diamond point held firmly within a four-prong cogwork setting made of hardened electrum alloy.
- The pommel terminates in a revolving seal stamped with the four-cornered balance scale of Registratus, which spins silently on micro-bearings when arcane pressure is channeled through the shaft.
- Hairline grooves run along all four edges, filled with powdered lapis lazuli and pulverized moonstone that spark with white-violet galvanic static whenever an active audit or spell negation is triggered.
- Expanded Historical Lore:
- Issued during the catastrophic maritime settlements of year 8520a, when entire island fleets sought emergency high-altitude refuge in the cloud layers during the Great Sinking Crisis.
- Used by High Bailiff Corvan to physically audit and requisition private naval galleons, scratching sovereign lien runes directly into their central mast plates to prevent unauthorized merchant desertion.
- Certified in the archives of seven separate constitutional monarchies as an incontestable instrument of judicial foreclosure, granting the presiding bailiff unilateral treaty enforcement authority.
- Legend recounts that during the Siege of the Broken Vaults, a rebel technomancer discharged a concentrated elemental lightning battery at the High Bailiff, who simply drew a square in the air with the stylus, absorbed the entire electrical surge into his mana reservoirs, and used the stolen power to seal the vault doors shut.
- Inherent Attributes:
- Physical Weight: 2.5 lbs.
- Intrinsic Material Resilience: 16.
- Total Armor Check Contribution: +0 AC (functions as an offensive weapon and spell focus rather than a defensive guard).
- Item Maximum Health: Avatar’s maximum health points plus 64 hit points (calculated as 16 resilience multiplied by Tier 4).
- Damage Threshold State: Enters a broken state at or below 50% hit points, losing its ability to absorb incoming spells and reducing its piercing damage to baseline mundane values; shatters into diamond grit and brittle meteoric slag at 0 hit points.
- Attunement Requirements: Demands a twenty-minute deep attunement ceremony conducted with certified gall ink and the Mind’s Eye, consuming one of the avatar’s maximum allowed 10 attuned gear slots.
- Tier Rejection Penalty: Any avatar of Tier 3 or lower attempting to wield, equip, or holster the stylus immediately takes 2d4 irreducible damage at the start of each combat turn or every thirty seconds in narrative time until dropped.
- Skills Gained While Carried or Equipped:
- Forensic Contract Scribing (Trained Skill): Grants +4 skill points to drawing legally binding treaties, deciphering dead scripts, and notarizing civic deeds.
- Mind’s Eye Arcane Diagnostics (Temporary Skill): Adds +3 temporary skill points to Mind’s Eye examinations when analyzing foreign enchantments, magical focus structures, and stored spell matrices in rival equipment.
- Statutory Interrogation (Trained Skill): Bestows +3 skill points to contested intimidation, judicial interrogation, and diplomatic insight checks during formal proceedings.
- Multiple Passive Magics:
- Immutable Record:
- Any mark, script, or rune scratched by the diamond tip into stone, iron, dragon scales, or wood cannot be erased, planed away, or dissolved by non-magical solvents, weather, or natural corrosion.
- The bearer is completely immune to the Blinded and Dazzled conditions, as the stylus continually corrects visual distortions by feeding raw spatial telemetry into the avatar’s Mind’s Eye.
- Arcane Balance Audit:
- While held, the stylus continuously monitors ambient mana fields, granting the bearer an intuitive sense of the exact tier level, remaining mana points, and current attunement slots of any targeted creature within thirty paces.
- Uncompromising Pierce:
- Weapon attacks made with the stylus ignore up to 4 points of natural armor, construct plating, or mundane physical damage reduction.
- Immutable Record:
- Multiple Active Magics:
- Audit of Liability (Primary Attack Conduit):
- On a successful strike dealing base piercing damage plus 4d10 tier damage against a target equipped with attuned gear, the target must make an opposed saving throw against the wielder’s tier check (d20 + 4d10).
- Upon a failed save, one randomly determined attuned magical item carried by the victim has its attunement link severed immediately for 1 minute, disabling all active and passive magical properties on that gear piece.
- Void Mark Conversion (Defensive Reaction):
- Triggered as an immediate reaction when the bearer is targeted by a ranged spell attack or magical projectile within forty feet.
- The wielder traces a sharp geometric quadrilateral in the air, instantly unraveling the incoming magical matrix and absorbing the raw arcane power into their personal Mana Boost pool (capped at 40 points).
- Once the pool reaches 40 points, additional absorbed mana harmlessly vents outward as a harmless spray of purple sparks.
- Writs of Execution (Offensive Focus Action):
- By expending an action and spending 10 stored mana points from the stylus’s pool, the wielder strikes the air toward a target within thirty feet, firing a lance of condensed starry force.
- Requires a ranged attack roll; on a hit, the bolt inflicts 4d10 force damage and applies the Silenced condition for one round, preventing somatic and verbal spell chanting.
- Foreclosure Brand (Touch Action):
- By spending an action outside of immediate combat, the bearer carves a miniature seal of Registratus onto a chest, vault door, vehicle, or structure.
- Locks the chosen object with an arcane seal of Tier 4 hardness, preventing unauthorized physical opening or magical bypassing unless an opposed dispel check overcomes the wielder’s Tier 4 rating.

Procurement, Valuation, and Commerce of the Stylus of the Mandatory Audit
- High-Tier Sovereign Scriptoriums and Supreme Chancery Exchanges:
- Situated strictly within the upper administrative sanctums of sovereign capital cities and metropolitan court plazas, these state-chartered scriptoriums serve judicial lords, grand bailiffs, and crown chancellors.
- Entering these establishments requires presenting verified high-tier credentials, imperial commissions, or notarized warrants from an accredited ministry of justice.
- Transactions are conducted under solemn legal protocols where the item’s four-sided star-iron bevels, electrum cogwork settings, and rotating pommel seals are scrutinized under multi-lens optical microscopes and active Mind’s Eye diagnostics to verify uncorrupted provenance.
- In metropolitan sovereign centers such as the grand chanceries of Aterian, Assyria, or Badarian, the purchase of this Tier 4 relic requires an investment ranging from 35,000 to 48,000 gold.
- Payment is handled through direct, state-cleared World Bank balance transfers, with transactions generating permanent archival records and tax certifications.
- Selling the stylus to a high chancery exchange involves an audit markdown of 10% per tier of the seller (a 40% reduction for a Tier 4 character), yielding an official payout of approximately 21,000 to 28,800 gold deposited directly into the seller’s verified institutional bank account.
- Arcane Antiquarian Salons and Premier Technomantic Ateliers:
- Found along the upper promenade tiers of advanced industrial districts, airship cloud-spires, and sky-dock citadels, these exclusive boutiques cater to wealthy technomancers, high-ranking magisters, and private collectors of sovereign artifacts.
- The proprietors are master artificers and guild-certified appraisers who handle transactions within private, lead-shielded viewing parlors equipped with mana-flow analyzers and galvanic test conduits.
- The focus is tested against controlled arcane surges to confirm its void-mark absorption capacity and diamond-point hardness.
- In aerie environments and skyward trade centers where star-iron is exceptionally scarce due to orbital isolation, purchasing the stylus commands between 42,000 to 55,000 gold.
- Sellers offloading the relic to an antiquarian salon receive roughly 22,000 to 26,000 gold via authenticated World Bank promissory scrip, minus standard appraisal filing fees and municipal artifact-transfer levies.
- Sovereign Auction Houses and High Guild Consignment Chambers:
- Operating in major international free-ports and royal banking sectors, these prestigious establishments conduct scheduled estate liquidations and guild seizures of sovereign debt assets.
- Access demands proof of financial solvency or an existing deposit account with the World Bank containing a verified reserve of no less than 20,000 gold.
- The stylus is displayed in pressurized glass cases lined with velvet, offered to competing guild masters, merchant princes, and high bailiffs through formal gavel bidding.
- At open sovereign auction, competitive bidding driven by the item’s severe combat anti-magic properties routinely drives the acquisition cost to between 50,000 and 70,000 gold.
- Consigning the item through an auction house secures a hammer-price payout minus an institutional consignment fee of 15% to 20%, netting the consignor roughly 30,000 to 45,000 gold deposited into their World Bank ledger once the audit period concludes.
- Deep-Water Black-Market Vaults and Clandestine Shadow Enclaves:
- Hidden deep within subterranean reef grottos, sunken warehouse labyrinths, and lawless coastal archipelagos, these illicit brokerages trade in high-tier contraband, reclaimed sovereign regalia, and items salvaged from assassinated judicial arbiters.
- The proprietors are dangerous shadow brokers and unregistered fences who conduct business under armed escort, protected by null-magic dampeners and heavy construct guards.
- Transactions strictly bypass the World Bank, prohibiting letters of credit or municipal scrip; all exchanges must be settled in raw, unrecorded physical wealth, such as platinum trade bars, star-metal ingots, or standard gold coin sacks transported in personal extradimensional storage containers.
- Underworld syndicates and rebel syndics value the stylus as the ultimate tool for bypassing judicial wards and neutralizing the attuned magical defenses of law enforcers, driving the illicit purchase price to between 60,000 and 85,000 physical gold coins.
- When an adventurer sells the relic to a shadow broker seeking an untraceable instrument of extortion or foreclosure, the fence asks zero questions regarding origin and pays an immediate, unrecorded bounty of 38,000 to 50,000 physical gold coins directly into the seller’s extradimensional cache.
Tactical Deployment and Environmental Roleplay of the Stylus of the Mandatory Audit

- In a marble-pillared courtroom during a sudden hostile insurrection or high-level assassin strike, a renegade sorcerer hurls a concentrated bolt of arcane flame toward the judicial bench.
- The bearer steps forward, whipping the foot-long star-iron stylus from its forearm sheath with an unhurried, mechanical flick of the wrist.
- Invoking Void Mark Conversion as a split-second reaction, the wielder carves a sharp, glowing quadrilateral into the air; the incoming elemental strike warps, collapses into a singular point, and gets siphoned entirely into the diamond tip, filling the wielder’s Mana Boost pool with crisp galvanic power while the courtroom remains unscorched.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When confronting an elite corporate advocate or renegade magistrate wrapped in layered defensive amulets, the bearer closes the distance across the polished flagstones.
- Striking forward with precision, the wielder drives the diamond point into the breastplate of the target, unleashing the Audit of Liability alongside 4d10 tier damage.
- A sharp chime of snapping crystal echoes as the target’s primary defensive talisman suffers immediate metaphysical severance; the victim’s magical barrier flickers out, leaving them vulnerable to standard civic apprehension.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Subterranean Megacity Undercities, Deep Mines, and Vault Complexes
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Traversing claustrophobic, dark stone tunnels where ancient rogue arcane constructs or mutated spell-weavers lurk in the damp crevices, the wielder uses the stylus to pierce the dark.
- The Immutable Record passive ensures the bearer remains completely impervious to blinding flash-traps or sensory-dazzling crystals embedded in the cavern walls, feeding clear spatial data directly into their Mind’s Eye.
- When a subterranean beast unleashes an erratic cone of chaotic transmutation energy, the bearer traces a void rune to intercept the blast wave, absorbing the volatile magic safely before it can destabilize the cavern ceiling.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Stalking an entrenched outlaw cabal sheltering behind locked adamantine blast doors in a deep-level vault, the bearer approaches the threshold.
- Channelling the Foreclosure Brand, the wielder presses the rotating electrum pommel against the vault frame, inscribing an immutable seal of Registratus into the dense metal.
- With the escape path sealed against physical and magical bypassing, the wielder enters the chamber, spends 10 absorbed mana points to fire a Writ of Execution at the rebel spell-caster, silencing their verbal chanting mid-syllable and forcing them into physical melee.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- High-Altitude Platforms, Airship Galleons, and Cloud Citadels
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Standing upon the exposed wooden deck of an airship soaring three thousand feet above the island archipelagos, hostile sky-corsairs unleash broadside volleys from mounted galvanic lightning cannons.
- Interposing the stylus along the ship’s gunwale, the bearer draws multiple void marks in rapid succession, draining the kinetic and electrical charge from incoming magical cannonades.
- The stolen mana is siphoned into personal reserves, preventing the airship’s floating gas envelopes from igniting or losing altitude in the high-wind turbulence.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- During a boarding clash on an opposing zeppelin’s bridge, the bearer leaps onto the hostile command deck to disable the vessel’s primary technomancer.
- The wielder executes a piercing thrust through the enemy helmsman’s reinforced flight suit, bypassing 4 points of natural armor and natural construct plating via Uncompromising Pierce.
- The blow shatters the helmsman’s attunement to the ship’s arcane elevation rudder, instantly stalling the hostile craft’s propulsion drive and forcing an unconditional surrender.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Maritime Reef Channels, Port Wharfs, and Tempestuous Sea Lanes
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Aboard a merchant caravel trapped in a storm where rogue sea hags and siren cultists cast localized lightning strikes and mind-rending auditory spells across the waves, the wielder holds the line at the mainmast.
- Activating the stylus’s passive Arcane Balance Audit, the bearer instantly discerns the precise spell reserves, attunement slots, and tier strength of the aquatic casters submerged in the surf.
- As a targeted lightning spear strikes toward the ship’s wheel, the wielder interposes the diamond point, devouring the electrical discharge into the star-iron matrix and grounding the residual static into sea spray.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Boarding a rogue smuggler cutter carrying illicit, unrecorded cargo through municipal waters, the bearer drives the stylus’s diamond tip straight through the captain’s enchanted cutlass.
- The Audit of Liability tears through the blade’s enchantment, severing the captain’s attunement to his weapon and stripping away its edge-enhancements for sixty seconds.
- The bearer then carves an unyielding foreclosure mark across the ship’s primary cargo hatch, preventing the crew from dumping their illicit contraband overboard before the port authority arrives.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Wilderness Scars, Leyline Rifts, and Ancient Ruins
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While surveying overgrown wilderness ruins where uncontrolled wild magic rifts pulse erratically, chaotic mana discharges threaten to overwhelm the adventuring party.
- The bearer keeps the four-sided stylus raised as a defensive ground, the star-iron shaft vibrating with white-violet galvanic static as it steadily bleeds unstable environmental magic into harmless sparkles of light.
- When ambushed by ancient chimeric beasts that spit beams of pure concentrated raw force, the wielder snaps a void mark into existence, catching the beam and converting the raw energy into a 40-point defensive shield reserve.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Confronting an ancient awakened guardian construct guarding an untouched arcane repository, the bearer dashes forward beneath its sweeping stone limbs.
- Finding the primary leyline conduit in the construct’s chest, the wielder drives the star-iron stylus into the seam, ignoring its physical stone damage reduction.
- The strike unleashes 4d10 tier force, fracturing the core crystal matrix and discharging a Writ of Execution that silences the golem’s internal signaling, causing the monolithic automaton to seize up and collapse onto the mossy flags.
- Defensive Roleplay:

Perception of Activation:
- Sight:
- User’s Perspective:
- The hairline grooves along the four cold-rolled star-iron edges flare with bright, white-violet galvanic static that races from the electrum collar down to the point.
- The industrial diamond tip blazes with an intense, crystalline violet luminescence that cuts through darkness and casts hard, elongated shadows.
- Tracing the air leaves behind crisp, geometric wireframes of ultraviolet light that remain suspended in three-dimensional space like glowing glass boxes.
- The rotating electrum pommel seal spins on its micro-bearings, leaving a soft, circular trail of afterimages stamped with the four-cornered balance scale of Registratus.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- The stylus in the bailiff’s hand suddenly draws all ambient light toward its diamond tip, darkening the immediate air by several shades.
- Brilliant violet arcs of static electricity crackle along the four-sided steel shaft without burning the wielder’s glove.
- When the weapon strikes an enchanted surface or wards off a spell, a sharp flash of purplish-white light erupts, tracing an expanding geometric cube that collapses inward and vanishes into the diamond.
- User’s Perspective:
- Sound:
- User’s Perspective:
- The pommel seal’s high-speed rotation generates a high-pitched, metallic whine that resonates directly through the bones of the hand and wrist.
- Striking through the air produces the crisp, sharp tearing sound of heavy parchment being sheared by an iron razor.
- Siphoning an incoming spell creates a sudden, deep vacuum thud—a hollow shuck like air rushing into an empty, sealed iron chamber.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Bystanders hear an ear-piercing whistle akin to a high-pressure steam valve releasing, instantly followed by the sound of glass under extreme compression.
- At the moment of item de-attunement, a loud, snapping crack resembling a whip striking stone echoes through the space.
- User’s Perspective:
- Smell:
- User’s Perspective:
- A sharp, biting scent of ozone and concentrated static electricity fills the nose, accompanied by the cold, metallic smell of freshly sheared meteoric iron.
- When engraving or striking targets, a faint trace of vaporized mineral dust and dry, ancient parchment drifts up from the point.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Nearby creatures smell the unmistakable odor of a lightning strike combined with heated electrum and scorched iron.
- User’s Perspective:
- Taste:
- User’s Perspective:
- The wielder experiences a sharp, copper-like galvanic tang on the back of the tongue, identical to placing a live battery contact against damp skin.
- A dry, chalky taste coats the palate whenever the personal Mana Boost reservoir absorbs incoming arcane energy.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Those within ten paces report a brief, sour metallic taste in their mouths whenever the void mark collapses an incoming magical attack.
- User’s Perspective:
- Touch:
- User’s Perspective:
- The star iron drops dramatically in temperature, turning numbingly cold against the wielder’s palm while remaining perfectly dry and frost-free.
- A steady, fine vibration hums through the fingers, providing tactile feedback as if drawing a stylus across rough, heavily textured vellum.
- When mana is siphoned, a sudden surge of physical heat rushes into the wielder’s core, revitalizing their fatigue like a shot of warm spirits.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- A target struck by the Audit of Liability feels an icy, needle-like shock pierce their body, instantly followed by the sensation of an invisible thread being yanked violently out of their chest as an attuned item goes cold and inert.
- User’s Perspective:
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Metaphysical Ledger Vision:
- The wielder’s Mind’s Eye perceives the battlefield as a vast, glowing ledger where every creature and object is tagged with its current tier level, remaining mana balance, and active attunement links.
- Attuned items on enemy combatants glow with bright golden threads connecting the item to the user’s soul-core; the wielder can mentally select which thread to sever.
- Arcane Vacuum Pull:
- Both user and observers feel a profound psychic pressure in the center of the forehead, as if the surrounding magical weave is being vacuumed into a bottomless gravitational drain.
- Sensory Clarification:
- Visual and auditory clutter are automatically filtered out of the wielder’s consciousness; illusions flicker and reveal their underlying geometry, and temporal echoes flatten into baseline reality.
- Metaphysical Ledger Vision:
- Positives:
- Completely dismantles enemy magical advantage by severing attuned gear connections and silencing spellcasters without allowing physical armor to mitigate the blow.
- Provides an absolute, reaction-based defense against incoming projectile spells while recycling hostile energy into personal mana reserves.
- Confers total immunity to visual impairment such as blindness or dazzling light while mapping the exact magical resources of opponents.
- Permanently marks and seals property, vaults, and barriers with unyielding Tier 4 judicial locks that resist mundane and magical tampering.
- Negatives:
- Emits distinct, high-frequency sound and bright violet luminescence that makes stealth operations, ambushes, or discreet spell negation impossible.
- Limited to absorbing 40 points in the personal Mana Boost pool; excess mana vents uncontrollably as visible, noisy electrical discharge.
- Demands Tier 4 spiritual resilience to wield; lower-tier avatars suffer continuous, severe metaphysical tissue rejection and health loss simply by holding the shaft.
- Siphoning and nullification require precise split-second reactions, leaving the bearer exposed to simultaneous mundane physical volleys from conventional weapons.
Recipe: Forging of the Star-Iron Audit Stylus
- Materials Needed:
- Two pounds of raw meteoric star iron, smelted from uncorrupted meteor fragments and free of terrestrial sulfur.
- One uncut industrial-grade diamond of master clarity, weighing no less than twelve carats.
- Three ounces of electrum alloy (a fifty-fifty fusion of refined gold and silver) for the cogwork collar and pommel mounting.
- One Tier 4 magic crystal (harvested from a legendary construct, high elemental sovereign, or elder dragon soul-core) to act as the primary resonant conductor.
- One vial of concentrated alchemical flux distilled from pulverized moonstone and pure quicksilver.
- Half an ounce of powdered lapis lazuli combined with dried squid ink for channel inlay.
- A half-pint of cooling quench oil infused with crushed diamond dust and distilled glacier water.
- Four micro-bearings cast from star iron, ground down to three-millimeter diameters.
- Tools Required:
- A high-temperature bellows forge lined with refractory firebrick, capable of sustaining smelting heat for star-metal.
- An anvil of cold-worked black iron fitted with square-swage channels.
- A hardened steel cold-rolling die plate with four-sided tapered guides.
- A jeweler’s gem-cutting spindle, diamond lapidary wheels, and micro-gravers.
- An electrum jeweler’s soldering torch fueled by pressurized alchemical vapor.
- A micro-swaging mandrel and watchmaker’s tweezers for bearing assembly.
- A set of hardened steel chasing chisels calibrated for hair-width inlay grooving.
- Skill Requirements:
- Blacksmithing & Star-Metal Forging: Trained skill level of at least 9 (requiring baseline skill 5 plus 4 for a Tier 4 item).
- Gemology & Lapidary Arts: Trained skill level of at least 8 to facet, seat, and lock the diamond point without fracturing its lattice under impact stress.
- Arcane Engineering & Runecraft: Trained skill level of at least 9 to properly align the mana-flow channels, the rotating pommel seal, and the void-siphon matrix.
- Mind’s Eye Arcane Diagnostics: Competency to monitor dimensional crystallization during cooling and prevent metaphysical resonance backfires.
- Crafting Steps:
- Step 1 (Star-Metal Smelting and Cold-Rolling): Heat the raw meteoric star iron in the refractory forge until it glows a dark, cherry-blue; draw it across the anvil into a square rod, then pass it through the four-sided cold-rolling die plate to produce an exact twelve-inch, tapered quadrilateral profile three-eighths of an inch wide at the base.
- Step 2 (Edge Grooving): Clamp the cooled square shaft into a padded vise; using micro-chasing chisels, cut hairline longitudinal channels along all four bevel edges running from the collar down to the terminal taper.
- Step 3 (Gem Setting and Lapidary Facing): Cut the twelve-carat industrial diamond into a pyramidal eight-facet needle point using the lapidary wheel; cast an electrum four-prong retention collar, mount the diamond firmly at the tip, and braze the collar to the tapered star-iron head with the alchemical vapor torch.
- Step 4 (Pommel Bearing Assembly): Machine the four-cornered balance scale of Registratus into an electrum disk; fit the four micro-bearings into the circular collar of the pommel base and seat the disk so it spins silently with near-zero friction.
- Step 5 (Catalyst Dissolution and Inlay): Pulverize the Tier 4 magic crystal into fine crystalline dust; blend it with the alchemical moonstone-quicksilver flux, powdered lapis lazuli, and gall ink into a semi-liquid conductive slurry. Pack this slurry tightly into the four hairline grooves along the shaft.
- Step 6 (Quench and Arcane Tempering): Heat the entire assembly to a dull blue luminescence, then submerge it slowly into the diamond-infused quench oil while projecting focused mana through the Mind’s Eye to lock the material resilience at 16.
- Step 7 (Attunement Calibration and Void Siphon Binding): Scrape away excess surface flux to expose the dark charcoal-blue iron; strike the diamond tip against an energized magical conductor while tracing a square in the air, binding the 40-point Mana Boost pool, locking the 4d10 tier damage matrix, and cementing the Tier 4 spiritual rejection ward.
Cold Star-Slag and Weighing of Sinking Rafts
In the season when the salt water rose up to eat the barley fields, before the high cities learned to hang their houses from the bellies of clouds upon chains of boiled brass, there was a terrible running about of fat merchants. This was the third overturning of the lower world, which is called in the squawking dialect of the mud-diggers the Sinking of Seven Cauldrons, though upon the wet lead tablets found in the fish-weir the sign is merely a drawing of an inverted duck.
The great island of Pel-Kador, which possessed forty-nine orchards of sweet blue gourds and twelve hills of red copper, began to soften at the edges like suet placed too near a hearth-fire. Day after day, the tide did not run back to its hole in the sea floor, but stayed upon the stone quays, licking the grease from the wheel-hubs of the hay-wains. The sheep stood upon the hilltops until their bellies were washed by foam, and the stone ovens where the bakers baked flat loaves of millet began to bubble with black sea-worms.
Then the masters of the timber-wharves, whose chief was an oily man named Mor-Gannok—written on the broken slate as “He Whose Belly Pushes the Table from the Wall”—commanded three hundred carpenters to fell the sacred ironwood trees of the high ridge. They did not fell them to build altars, nor to make oars for the king’s water-striders, but to lash together eighty immense square floats, which they called The Rafts of Preservation.
Upon these rafts, Mor-Gannok and his nine brothers heaped all the heavy things of the province: six thousand iron cauldrons, four hundred barrels of pickled goose grease, twenty-two chests of electrum arm-rings, and eighty-four women whose hair was braided with river pearls. But to the common folk who held neither copper scales nor silver tallies—the ditchers who cleaned the canal-mouths, the girls who spun nettle-thread, and the boys who dried sea-kale upon flat stones—Mor-Gannok showed only the points of his boathooks.
“The sea has an appetite,” shouted Mor-Gannok from the poop-rail of the chief timber float, dipping his beard into a horn of hot spiced beer. “The water takes the light dirt, but the solid wood belongs to those who have stamped their names upon yellow vellum! Let the nettle-spinners tie bladders to their ankles and swim toward the rising star! The rafts are certified for three hundred weights of fat and four hundred weights of metal, and not one bean-eater more shall climb the rope-ladders!”
The water rose until it was up to the armpits of the stone idols in the harbor. The priests climbed into the cedar branches, wailing like gulls whose eggs have been crushed by goats, and the low houses fell into the grey surf with a sound like wet turf falling from an iron spade.
Then out of the drowning mist, walking neither fast nor slow upon the narrow stone causeway that was already two spans under the foam, came a solitary clerk whose boots did not make any splashing.
His name in the archaic scratching was High Bailiff Corvan-of-the-Square-Rule, though because the tablet was gnawed by sea-mice, the second syllable reads like “He Who Looks into the Porridge-Pot with an Unsmiling Jaw.” He wore neither mail of fish-scales nor a gilded cap, but a stiff surcoat of grey felt stiffened with fish-glue, which had fourteen pockets for holding horn ink-stands, bone scrapers, and rolls of coarse hemp paper.
In his right hand, gripped between two fingers like a schoolmaster holding a birch rod over a dunce, he carried a four-sided bar of dark, greasy iron. It was one cubit in length, smelling of thunder-stones that fall from the night clouds during the feast of the goat-slaughter, and its head was set with a white pebble that shone with the sour, pale eye of a dead cod. At the pommel was a little wheel of pale metal that turned round and round upon tiny grease-pins without making any more noise than a moth walking upon a woollen blanket.
The bailiff reached the floating timbers of the great central barge, where Mor-Gannok’s hirelings stood with three-pronged iron forks to push the swimming women back into the foam.
Corvan did not ask for a dry plank. He did not pull himself up by the hempen ropes. He took the four-sided iron rod and struck the diamond pebble against the side of the floating raft: tock.
The sound was not loud, yet the sixty rowers who were eating salt pork in the lower belly of the float dropped their wooden spoons, for their teeth felt cold as if they had bitten into river ice. The ninety barrels of pickled goose grease upon the deck gave a heavy groan, and the four-sided star-iron began to sweat white fire along its four edges, tracing the shapes of square boxes in the night fog.
“Who taps upon the oak of Mor-Gannok?” cried the raft-lord, dropping his beer-horn into the froth. “Are you an envoy from the Cloud Council with an anchor-rope, or a drownling who has stolen his grandfather’s awl?”
“I am the Audit of the Lower Reaches,” replied Corvan, and his throat was like two dry shingles rubbing together in an empty barn. “Here are eighty timber platforms floating upon twelve fathoms of grey salt, yet upon the great lead-slate in the treasury of Registratus there is no entry for their buoyancy. You have cut forty-two cubits of royal cedar without paying the stump-penny to the harbor-warden. You have loaded twenty chests of electrum arm-rings that have not been weighed against the sovereign grain-standard. This float is an unregistered swelling upon the waters. Its balance is crooked. The ledger must be balanced before the tide reaches the eaves of the temple.”
Mor-Gannok laughed until his three chins shook like curdled milk. He reached to his girdle and drew forth his great pride: a two-handed cleaving sword forged of dwarf-copper, which had three fiery carbuncles set into the hilt that were charmed by the witches of the south reef so that no steel could turn its edge and no spell of water could quench its cutting fire.
“Here is my tally-stick!” roared Mor-Gannok, lifting the red copper blade with both fists. “My grandfather bought this blade with forty bullocks and the life of a slave-girl! It has seventeen enchantments of cutting and burning! Stand aside, grey clerk, or I will split your felt smock from the collar to the tail-flap!”
The fat lord leaped down from the steering bench and brought the red copper sword whistling through the damp air straight at the bailiff’s crown.
Corvan did not skip backward into the sea, nor did he put up an iron buckler. He merely lifted the four-sided stylus, held it diagonally across his eye, and with a short flick of his thumb, he scratched a little square into the empty air between himself and the falling blade.
A great noise followed, like forty dry sheepskins being torn at once in an empty hall.
The fire in the three carbuncles upon the sword hilt did not strike the felt coat; instead, the red glow ran forward off the gems, curled itself into three round balls of scarlet grease, and was sucked straight into the diamond point of the stylus with a hollow sucking whistle—shloop. The dark star-iron shaft became so cold that the sea-mist turned to white hoar-frost upon the bailiff’s knuckles, while the copper sword in Mor-Gannok’s hands went dull and grey, like a brass kettle that has been buried three winters in pig-manure.
The fat lord fell upon his knees on the wet deck, his elbows trembling, his thumbs turned white and numb. The three carbuncles upon his sword-guard were only three bits of burnt coal that smelled of fried tallow.
“My seventeen virtues!” Mor-Gannok wailed, clawing at his scabbard. “Where is the heat of the south reef? Where is the cutting of the red dwarf? My grandfather’s iron has become as soft as an old turnip-knife!”
“The liability is audited,” said Corvan, stepping over the bulwark with dry soles. “Your attunement was an unlicensed monopoly. It has been converted into the treasury of the balance. Your sword is now valued at four pence of base copper, which shall be credited against your harbor-arrears.”
Then the bailiff walked through the eighty rafts. Wherever he found a chest of gold that had no municipal bill of laden, he touched the lock with the cold diamond point; the gold inside ceased to shine with its yellow luster, becoming cold grey lead until the scribes could arrive with the ink-horns to count the pennies. Wherever he saw a company of armed retainers wearing mail coats dipped in basilisk-fat to turn away spears, he drew a straight line across the sky with the star-iron; instantly their mail became heavy and brittle like dry gingerbread, falling into flakes upon their knees so that they could not stand up to beat the townspeople with their staves.
When he reached the center of the largest raft, where the women were weeping and the sheep were bleating into the dark, Corvan drove the point of the stylus four inches into the heart of the mainmast.
He did not use a mallet. The diamond went into the hard heart-wood as if the great oak beam were only an old cheese.
From the little hole in the wood, four lines of white-violet light ran out across the timber floats. They ran north, they ran south, they ran east, they ran west. Every raft that was bound to the center was pulled by the invisible lines until the eighty floats formed one great square, forty cubits upon every edge, perfectly level upon the black waves so that not one cup of beer spilled from its rim, and not one sheep fell into the froth.
Then Corvan pointed with his grey finger to the thousands of poor wretches who were clinging to the drowned temple roofs and swimming with bladders tied to their ribs.
“Load the ditchers,” the bailiff commanded, and his voice went through the sea-mist like an iron rod through a basket of wool. “Load the spinners. Load the boys who dry the kale. Each man has two arms and two ears; therefore, by the calculation of the high chancery, his weight upon the water is equal to thirty pounds of dried pork. There is room upon the square for six thousand souls and one basket of dry parsnips. If any merchant throws one kale-boy into the sea to make room for an electrum tea-kettle, the stylus shall be laid against his breastbone, and his heart shall be audited until it has the consistency of cold river mud.”
The merchants did not dare to reach for their copper knives, for they saw that their fine rings had turned to chalk and their enchanted waist-cords had unbraided themselves into greasy pig-bristle. They pulled the ditchers out of the water with their own fat hands. They hauled the shivering women into the dry pens, and they fed the nettle-spinners with the pickled goose grease that had been put aside for the councilors.
And when the morning sun came up over the drowned mountains—red and watery like an inflamed eyeball—the eighty rafts of Pel-Kador did not sink into the seven cauldrons. They sat upon the grey water as firm and flat as a paved market square, bound together by the four-sided marks of the star-iron needle that no wave could dissolve and no storm could shake loose.
As for High Bailiff Corvan, the old broken tile records that he did not sit down upon the timber floats to eat honeyed cakes with the saved folk. When the rafts were balanced to the weight of a single dried pea, he drew the foot-long stylus out of the oak mast, wiped the salt-spray from the cold star-iron with his sleeve, and walked away toward the western clouds across the surface of the deep water, his iron pencil clicking in his hand like a grasshopper in a dry hedge, looking for other drowned kingdoms where the books had been kept with false ink.
Moral of the story: A man may build a wall of enchanted bronze to keep out the salt sea, and he may hire thirty swordsmen with charmed blades to drive his neighbors into the ditch; yet when the great water rises, all his gold is only lead in the eyes of the Auditor, and if his ledger has an error of one half-penny, the cold star-iron will strip the coat from his back and give his bread to the ditch-cleaner; therefore, keep your accounts straight with the town clerk while your boots are still dry, lest your soul be foreclosed when the raft begins to wobble.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
The Stylus of the Mandatory Audit (Alien Star-Iron Relic)
- Sanity Cost to Touch or Attune: 1d6/1d10 Sanity points upon attuning or witnessing the geometric void-siphon effect, as the human mind struggles against the cold, cosmic absolute of hyper-dimensional law.
- Weapon Profile: Melee Weapon (Improvised Piercing Implement / Relic).
- Skill: Fighting (Brawl) or Fighting (Spear/Dagger)
- Damage: 1d4 + 2 + Damage Bonus + 2d10 Irreducible Arcane Severance damage.
- Base Range: Touch / Hand-to-Hand.
- Uses per Round: 1.
- Malfunction / Rejection: 96–00. (If wielded by an investigator or entity without sufficient mythos/occult endurance, or someone below significant occult mastery, it inflicts 2d4 physical Hit Point loss directly to the user at the start of each round).
Properties and Relic Enactments:
- Audit of Liability (Passive Striking Rite): When an attack hits an entity possessing enchanted artifacts, hyper-dimensional relics, or sustained spell wards, the target must make an Extreme POW test. On a failure, one active spell effect is unraveled instantly, or one talisman/relic carried by the target has its magical properties severed and suppressed for 1d10 combat rounds.
- Void Mark Siphon (Cost: 1 Sanity point as a Reaction): When targeted by an incoming spell, blast, or supernatural projectile within 15 yards, the bearer traces a planar quadrilateral in the air. The incoming spell is dispelled, and its Magic Point cost is converted directly into the wielder’s personal Magic Point pool (cannot exceed a maximum overflow pool of 40 MP).
- Forensic Foreclosure: Scratching a square onto a door, threshold, or vault prevents non-Euclidean passage, phase shifting, or planar entry by Mythos entities with a POW lower than 90.
Blades in the Dark
The Auditor’s Diamond Stylus (Rare Pre-Cataclysm Relic / Arcane Implement)
- Load: 1 Load (Foot-long star-iron stylus carried in a forearm sheath).
- Tags: Arcane, Potent, Star-Iron, Piercing, Requisition.
Mechanics and Operational Abilities:
- Quality & Potency: Counts as Tier IV Quality gear when striking supernatural targets, puncturing spirit armaments, or unraveling wards.
- Severe Rejection: If equipped or carried by a scoundrel whose crew or personal tier is below Tier IV, take 1 level 2 harm (Spiritual Rejection) that cannot be resisted while the stylus is held or holstered on your person.
- Audit of Liability (Action / Combat): When you strike an opponent shielded by arcane defenses, hull plating, or bound ghosts using Skirmish or Attune, you operate with +1 Potency and +1 Effect.
- Critical: The target’s supernatural protection or active ghostly tether is permanently fractured; their magical edge is foreclosed immediately.
- 6: One major magical enchantment, spirit item, or ward active on the target is completely suppressed for the rest of the score.
- 4/5: The target’s magical device or ward is severed, but take 1 Stress or choose a complication (an explosive backdraft of static sparks).
- 1-3: Desperate outcome; the backlash singes your arm, or an enemy counter-strikes before the mark finishes.
- Void Mark Conversion (Reaction / Defense): You may spend 2 Stress as an immediate defense against an incoming supernatural attack or ghost field. The hostile arcana collapses into the diamond tip, clearing 1 Stress or allowing you to immediately fuel a subsequent Arcane Action with Great Effect.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition / 2024 Revision)
Stylus of the Mandatory Audit Weapon (Dagger), Very Rare (Requires Attunement by a Character of 15th Level or Higher)
- Weapon Profile: Finesse, Light, Thrown (Range 20/60 ft.).
- Hit & Damage: You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. It deals 1d4 piercing damage plus 4d10 force damage on a hit.
- Uncompromising Pierce: Attacks made with this weapon ignore damage reduction and treat damage immunities to piercing or force damage as resistances instead.
- Divine Rejection: A creature that requires attunement to gear and attempts to attune to or carry this weapon while under 15th level does not gain its benefits and takes 2d4 force damage at the start of each of its turns until it drops or stows the stylus.
- Audit of Liability: When you hit a creature with this weapon that is attuned to one or more magic items, the target must make a DC 18 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, one randomly determined magic item attuned to the target ceases to function, losing all magical bonuses and properties for 1 minute as if suppressed by an antimagic field.
- Void Mark Conversion: When you are targeted by a spell attack or forced to make a saving throw against a spell or magical projectile that targets only you, you can use your reaction to trace a geometric void mark in the air. The spell is negated and has no effect on you. You gain a number of temporary mana points equal to twice the spell’s level (up to a maximum reservoir of 40 points). You can expend these points on subsequent turns to cast Dispel Magic (costing 3 points per spell level) or Counterspell (costing 3 points per spell level) using Charisma as your spellcasting ability.
- Writ of Execution: As an action, you can spend 10 stored mana points to unleash a ray of starry force at a creature within 60 feet. Make a ranged spell attack. On a hit, the target takes 4d10 force damage and is Silenced (as by the Silence spell) until the end of its next turn.

- Damage: 1d6 piercing damage + 4d10 direct damage against magical constructs, planar beings, or spell-warded foes.
- Quality: 6 Quality (Diamond and cold-rolled star-metal construction; immune to mundane acids, fire, and rust).

- Severe Rejection: Any character carrying this item who possesses fewer than 6 maximum Hit Dice loses 2d4 HP every exploration turn (10 minutes) or every round in combat, as the star-iron rejects unworthy blood.
- Arcane Audit: When you hit a foe reliant on an active spell, relic, or magical ward, the target must make a Wisdom save. If failed, one active magical effect or relic in their possession is deactivated for 10 minutes.
- Void Siphon (Reaction): Once per combat encounter, when targeted by a magical blast, breath weapon, or spell scroll, you may use your reaction to trace a geometric square with the stylus. The spell is unmade and absorbed, restoring 1d10 of your spent Mana/Slots or granting you 20 temporary hit points.
- Immutable Inscription: Any door, lock, or threshold carved with the diamond tip cannot be opened by mundane lockpicks or non-magical tools, requiring an opposed spell-casting test against Level 8 magic to bypass.
Fate Core / Condensed
The Stylus of the Mandatory Audit
- Aspects:
- High Concept: Cold-Rolled Star-Iron Scribing Spike of Foreclosure
- Trouble: Inflexible Instrument of Metaphysical Scrutiny
- Invoked Aspect: Unraveler of Unlicensed Enchantments
- Stunts and Extras:
- Weapon:4 Diamond Point: Strikes made with the four-sided diamond tip ignore up to 2 points of physical or supernatural Armor, delivering Weapon:4 harm on a successful physical attack.
- Audit of Liability: When you successfully attack a target relying on supernatural relics, attuned trinkets, or persistent magical wards, you may choose to forgo dealing physical stress to place the situation aspect Contractually Foreclosed on one of their enchanted items with one free invoke. While this aspect is attached, the item loses all passive bonuses and active stunts for the remainder of the scene.
- Void Mark Conversion: Once per exchange as a defense action against an incoming magical strike, spell projectile, or supernatural attack from an adjacent or same zone, you may roll Lore or Fight to defend. If you succeed, you completely negate the incoming magic and store its charge, gaining 1 Mana Boost point (up to a pool maximum of 4). You may spend these stored points on subsequent turns to add a +2 bonus to any Arcane, Attack, or Overcome roll made through the stylus.
- Writs of Execution: By expending 2 stored Mana Boost points and taking an attack action, you project a beam of condensed starry force at a target up to two zones away. On a success with style, the target is marked with the aspect Judicially Silenced, rendering them completely unable to cast spells or issue verbal declarations for one round.
- Rejection of the Unregistered: Any character of lower standing (lacking Tier 4 rank, peak status, or an appropriate High Bailiff concept) who attempts to carry or wield the stylus suffers a 2-point physical stress hit at the start of each of their exchanges until they release the item.
Cypher System / Numenera (Discovery & Destiny)

- Activated Abilities:
- Audit of Liability (Combat Action): When you hit a creature or construct utilizing cyphers, artifacts, or active supernatural enhancements, make an attack roll modified by the artifact’s Level 8. On a success, beyond normal damage, one randomly determined artifact or active cypher carried by the target is suppressed and becomes inert for one hour.
- Void Mark Conversion (Reaction): When targeted by an incoming ranged energy attack, ray, or magical effect, you may attempt a Speed defense roll eased by two steps. On a success, the incoming effect is completely absorbed into the diamond tip, charging an internal energy pool by a number of points equal to the incoming attack’s level (maximum pool capacity: 40 points).
- Writs of Execution (Action): By expending 10 points from the stylus’s stored energy pool, you fire a beam of starry force at a target within long range. The attack inflicts 8 points of damage and inflicts an inability on the target, preventing all speech, spellcasting, and vocal communication for one minute.
- Foreclosure Brand: Touching an entrance, vault door, or chest and spending an action seals the container with an unyielding Level 8 barrier that resists all mundane breaches and requires an Intellect task against Level 8 to unlock.
