Lore:
- Originating from the twilight parlor-debates and boundary-bargaining courts of the Sleih Beggey on Saṃsāra, this neckwear channels the domestic Little People’s cunning knack for fast-paced verbal footwork.
- The Ferrishyn are renowned for their intricate social compacts, where a well-placed compliment, a rambling folksy anecdote, or a sudden deflection of hospitality can disarm a suspicious stranger or extract a favor before the target realizes a bargain was struck.
- Crafted within underground textile burghs, these garments are spun by hearth-spinsters using sheep fleece gathered along barrow boundaries and steeped in elderberry water, wild honey, and sweet clover nectar.
- The tally mark “741” is finely embroidered in river-bronze metallic thread into the inner collar fold, marking it as an official emissary’s accessory designed for frontier envoys, border merchants, and quick-witted negotiators who must talk their way past hostile watchers.
- Folklore across the terraces maintains that anyone wearing the cravat speaks with the comforting warmth of a grandmother’s tea table, spinning rapid yarns so charming and disarming that adversaries lower their weapons just to hear the end of the sentence.
Description:
- A tailored, flowing cravat and ascot tie woven from soft, cream-and-honey checked wool twill, edged with dark peat-brown piping and lined with supple spun sheep-silk.
- The fabric is densely patterned with subtle, embroidered Manx knotwork, clover blossoms, and running triskelions rendered in dull bronze-colored flax thread that catches the light only when the wearer speaks.
- Hanging from the gathered throat knot by a delicate braid of silver wire and field-flax is a single teardrop bead of translucent fairy-struck beach quartz that radiates a faint, golden-honey warmth.
- Tucked discreetly into the pleated folds beneath the quartz is a pair of miniature, resonant chime-bells cast from bell bronze, each tuned so finely that they emit an imperceptible harmonic hum when breath passes over them during rapid speech.
- The cravat perpetually exudes the inviting aroma of warm honey-bannocks, dried sweet clover, and gentle hearth smoke, creating an immediate psychological atmosphere of domestic goodwill.

Procurement and Markets for the Burgh-Spun Honey-Tongue Cravat
On Saṃsāra, garments woven with the conversational arts of the Sleih Beggey are not sold alongside common roughspun tunics or utilitarian work frocks. Because the Ferrishyn value hearthside etiquette, boundary pacts, and clever negotiation, these enchanted neckpieces circulate through establishments catering to diplomats, frontier merchants, courtroom advocates, and covert boundary couriers.
1. High-Street Haberdashers and Tailor Parlors
Found along the paved merchant avenues of river-terrace capitals and provincial market hubs, these elegant shops cater to municipal clerks, estate stewards, and traveling barristers.
- How the Item Is Presented: The cravat is displayed draped over a polished horn bust or tucked neatly into an open cedar display chest alongside silver cuff-studs and silk pocket-squares. The master tailor invites the prospective client to try the neckpiece on, demonstrating how comfortably the soft sheep-silk settles against the collar and pointing out how the faint scent of wild clover and toasted barley naturally puts nervous clients at ease. The haberdasher discreetly notes that the tie lends its wearer an “unassailable air of domestic sincerity.”
- Payment Form: Standard World Bank bank chits, certified letters of credit, or clean silver coin.
Cost in Saṃsāra:
- Standard Retail Price: 50–70 standard World Bank credit chits.
- Barter Equivalent: A bolt of high-thread-count upland linen, two stone crocks of cold-pressed sweet almond oil, and three polished bone buttons.
2. Boundary Mound Tea-Halls and Barrow Pantries
Situated inside dry hillside caverns and stone-lined threshold parlors where surface farmers and the Little People meet over cider and cheese, these cozy establishments serve as neutral diplomatic grounds.
- How the Item Is Presented: Folded neatly upon a woven willow tray resting on a low oak tea-table, often surrounded by small saucers of dried chamomile and clover blooms. A burgh-weaver or elder mound-factor presides over the tea, offering the buyer a steaming mug of spiced elderberry tea. To prove the cravat’s authenticity, the factor speaks a few swift words in the old tongue, causing the hidden bronze bells to hum harmonically and the amber quartz to glow like morning sun through honey.
- Payment Form: Unskimmed dairy, unrefined honeycomb, sweet mead, or high-grade bronze scrap.
Cost in Saṃsāra:
- Barter (Preferred): 2 large jars of unheated wild heather honey, a wheel of three-year aged sharp ewe’s cheese, and a small sack of malted brewing grain.
- Coin/Credit Equivalent: ~40–55 standard World Bank credit chits (primarily used by the mound to buy seasonal surface goods).
3. Smuggler Nooks, Back-Alley Wagering Dens, and Fence Salons
Hidden behind curtains in busy dockside taverns, gambling basements, and illicit trading stalls in frontier boomtowns, these backroom shops cater to con artists, underground fixers, and cutpurses who rely on their wits to survive.
- How the Item Is Presented: Kept secured inside a velvet-lined rosewood drawer alongside forged travel permits, loaded dice, and identity seals. The fence demonstrates the cravat by speaking a blatant lie about the item’s origin; the buyer immediately feels the comforting, disarming wave of the Domestic Hospitality Ward, making the lie sound thoroughly reasonable. The broker highlights that the tie will save the user’s hide when challenged by armed gate sentries or suspicious customs inspectors.
- Payment Form: Unmarked trade scrip, bearer notes, or untraceable foreign metal.
Cost in Saṃsāra:
- Black Market Purchase Price: 75–100 standard World Bank credit chits (commanding a high premium among quick-tongued operators).
- Pawn/Resale Value: A broker or fence will purchase an intact, unstained cravat with its quartz and chime-bells undamaged from an avatar for 35–45 chits, reselling it quickly to an operative facing an upcoming trial or interrogation.
Tactical and Roleplay Applications of the Honey-Tongue Cravat Across Saṃsāra
On Saṃsāra, the Sleih Beggey 741 of the Burgh-Spun Honey-Tongue Cravat operates not through brutish threats, but through the disarming domestic rhetoric of the Ferrishyn. In roleplay, its magic weaponizes cadence, folksy logic, and boundary hospitality, allowing an avatar to dismantle hostility or seize tactical control purely through the spoken word.
1. Heavily Guarded Frontier Gates, Customs Checkpoints, and Fortified Palisades
At boundary turnstiles where stern sentries demand transit chits, search baggage for contraband, or hold travelers at spear-point, the cravat turns tense inspections into easy passages.
Defensive & Roleplay Focus (Smoothing Scrutiny & Explaining Away Contraband): Approaching a checkpoint with unsanctioned goods, the avatar assumes a genial, unhurried posture, resting a thumb lightly against the cravat’s gathered knot. Through Domestic Hospitality Ward, the inspectors instinctively perceive the avatar as an inoffensive traveler or visiting distant cousin. If a suspicious guardsman spots a concealed blade or untaxed parcel, the avatar immediately triggers Burgh-Factor’s Sweet Deflection. Tapping the bronze bells to sound a subtle, calming hum, the avatar reframes the contraband as an ordinary household necessity—perhaps an heirloom pruning knife or medicinal lard for an ailing aunt—causing the guard to drop the matter as an innocent misunderstanding without demanding a bribe or raising an alarm.
Offensive & Roleplay Focus (The Paralyzing Bureaucratic Tangler): When the party needs to slip through a portcullis without presenting forged travel papers, the wearer strides directly to the captain of the watch and activates Sleigh’s Rapid-Fire Blather. The avatar unleashes an unceasing, intricate dissertation on local tax ordinances, ancestral cart-axle regulations, and second-cousin marriage genealogies from the next valley over. Mesmerized and bewildered by the avalanche of polite domestic trivia, the captain nods complacently, paralyzed in conversation. The rest of the adventuring crew slips quietly past the gatehouse. Once the party is through, the wearer triggers Clover-Smoke Distraction, offering a hasty bow, popping a sweet-scented puff of smoke, and stepping into the crowd before the captain even realizes he never saw the writ.
2. High-Stakes Council Chambers, Guildhalls, and Noble Salons
Within the echoing halls of power where guildmasters, terrace-lords, and calculating barristers duel with legal contracts, slander, and political maneuvering, the cravat ensures the wearer dominates the debate.
Defensive & Roleplay Focus (Deflecting Accusations & Enduring Interrogation): When called before a tribunal or subjected to hostile cross-examination by an aristocratic inquisitor, the avatar remains completely composed. Peat-Warm Tongue ensures their voice never cracks, dries out, or betrays nervousness, even under hours of intense questioning. When an opposing advocate introduces damning evidence or an aggressive accusation, the avatar uses the cravat’s soothing lilt to make the opposing counsel seem abrasive, hysterical, and lacking in basic civic decency. The audience’s sympathy shifts effortlessly to the avatar, treating the accusations as distasteful overreaches.
Offensive & Roleplay Focus (The Social Ambush & Contract Snatch): During tense treaty or trade renegotiations, the wearer uses Hearth-Cadence Charm to lace their arguments with rhythmic folk cadence, subtly nudging rivals into conceding key points. If an obstinate merchant baron refuses to yield on toll concessions, the avatar delivers Sleigh’s Rapid-Fire Blather, weaving a folksy parable about butter-churning that metaphorically corners the baron’s economic logic. Before the baron can disentangle the dizzying yarn, the avatar slides the amended parchment across the table for a signature. When the ink dries, the avatar adjusts the cravat, letting the chime hum as they make their graceful exit, leaving the assembly bewildered by how thoroughly they were out-talked.
3. Rowdy Frontier Taverns, Back-Alley Standoffs, and Bandit Ambush Lines
In lawless fringe settlements, dimly lit taprooms, or narrow alleyways where drawn blades and drunken brawls are common, the cravat turns deadly escalations into harmless banter.
Defensive & Roleplay Focus (De-escalating Violence & Thwarting Ambushes): Cornered in an alley by extortionists or surrounded in a tavern by belligerent mercenaries looking for a fight, the avatar speaks before a blade can be raised. The cravat’s rich aroma of warm honey-bannocks and gentle peat smoke washes over the assailants, subconsciously triggering memories of safe kitchen fires and warm meals. The avatar’s voice carries a familial warmth that makes drawing a sword feel unnatural and unprovoked. If an aggressor lunges anyway, a swift tap to the bronze throat-fitting lets the wearer use Burgh-Factor’s Sweet Deflection, spinning an absurd excuse—such as mistaking the thug for a long-lost shoemaker—that completely derails the attacker’s murderous momentum.
Offensive & Roleplay Focus (The Tactical Monologue & Smoke Retreat): If violence is unavoidable or the party needs to create an opening against superior numbers, the avatar engages the enemy leader with Sleigh’s Rapid-Fire Blather. By loudly debating the proper way to cure mutton bacon or asking pointed, rapid-fire questions about the bandit’s footwear, the avatar freezes the leader in place. While the bandit stands transfixed, trying to answer the nonsensical barrage, the avatar’s companions position themselves for a flank or line up clean shots. Once the trap is sprung, the wearer activates Clover-Smoke Distraction, filling the immediate space with a disorienting, sweet-scented fog that lets them withdraw to safety while their foes strike blindly at empty air.

Perception of Activation:
- Visual Perception:

- Positives: Relieves muscular tension, allowing rapid-fire syllables to flow without trip-ups, stuttering, or jaw clenching.
- Negatives: Can feel overly warm and slightly stifling when worn under heavy armor or during intense physical combat.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Domestic Hospitality Rapport (The Hearth-Guest Aura):
- User’s Perspective: An intuitive psychic resonance assures the wearer that listeners view them not as a threat or stranger, but as an honored hearthside guest entitled to courtesy and patient hearing.
- Observer’s Perspective: Empaths and psionic sensitives perceive an aura of profound domestic innocence and familial familiarity wrapping around the speaker, dampening aggressive intent.
- Positives: Imposes a subconscious barrier against unprovoked violence, making adversaries hesitate before drawing steel or raising an alarm.
- Negatives: Creates an innate ethical reluctance in the wearer to enact direct, lethal violence while the hospitality aura is active.
- Cadence Synchronization (The Barrow-Spinsters’ Weave):
- User’s Perspective: The user perceives the conversational partner’s thoughts as a loose thread ready to be guided, intuitively grasping which anecdotes, flattery, or bureaucratic tangents will captivate and confuse their train of thought.
- Observer’s Perspective: Telepaths sense a subtle, non-invasive weaving of verbal suggestions that nudges the target’s focus away from suspicions and into passive agreement.
- Positives: Provides immediate, instinctual awareness of social leverage points, making bluffing and misdirection feel natural and fluid.
- Negatives: Excessive reliance on rapid conversational weaving can cause brief mental fatigue or word salad once the charm recedes.
- Domestic Hospitality Rapport (The Hearth-Guest Aura):

- Sleih Beggey Domestic Lore / Social Enchantment: Level 2 or higher – Familiarity with mound boundary laws, hospitality compacts, and voice-lilt charm weaving.
Crafting Steps:
- Fabric Preparation and Scent Steeping:
- Wash the raw mountain-ewe wool in lukewarm rainwater steeped with dried clover blooms and wild thyme.
- Rinse the wool in a weak solution of elderberry wash and mountain honey, drying it slowly over a gentle peat fire to permanently embed the sweet, comforting scent of domestic baking into the fibers.
- Spin and weave the yarn into a soft, fine twill weave displaying a subtle cream-and-honey checked pattern.
- Pattern Cutting and Lining Assembly:
- Cut the outer checked twill to the pattern of an elongated ascot tie, tapering gracefully from a gathered neckband down to broad, flared front aprons.
- Cut a matching backing from the sheared sheep-silk lining.
- Baste the dark peat-brown wool piping along the outer seam allowance, folding the edges inward and pressing the seams flat using a heated bone seam-creaser.
- Embroidery and Knotwork Binding:
- Wax the river-bronze metallic flax thread using raw beeswax.
- Hand-embroider interlaced Manx knotwork, clover leaves, and running triskelion swirls along the outer margins of the front folds.
- Using micro-stitches, embroider the registration tally “741” into the reverse fold of the inner collar band.
- Slip-stitch the sheep-silk lining to the outer twill, enclosing all raw seams to ensure a frictionless, non-irritating fit against the throat.
- Casting the Chime-Bells and Drilling the Quartz:
- Melt the bell bronze ingot in the small crucible and cast two miniature, matched pear-shaped chime-bells.
- Tune each bell’s internal clapper with fine needle files so that exhaled breath causes them to hum in a soft, harmonic chord.
- Bore a clean suspension hole through the narrow end of the teardrop-shaped beach quartz using the diamond micro-drill.
- Braid the silver wire with the mountain flax, securing the quartz pebble into a delicate wire cage and attaching the twin chime-bells to short, concealed suspension loops beneath it.
- Assembly of the Throat Node:
- Fasten the braided silver-wire loop securely to the front gathering pleat of the cravat knot.
- Position the teardrop quartz so it rests visibly against the upper knot, letting the twin chime-bells hang tucked just beneath the outer layer of wool where breathing will stir them.
- Hand-press the cravat folds into neat, cascading pleats using the copper steaming kettle filled with chamomile- and clover-infused water.
- Consecration of the Domestic Hospitality Compact:
- Take the completed cravat to a well-kept domestic hearth or an open stone threshold of an earthen fairy barrow at dusk.
- Set the saucer of sweet unskimmed milk and the honey-bannock upon the stone as a gift to the spinsters and boundary-factors of the Sleih Beggey.
- Drape the cravat around the collar while reciting the traditional Manx guest-right pledge, dedicating the item to the peaceful settlement of disputes and the protection of travelers through honeyed speech.
- When the compact is accepted, the river-bronze embroidery will flare with a warm golden-bronze shimmer, the teardrop quartz will ignite with an amber hearth-spark, the bells will hum in soft resonance, and a faint wisp of sweet clover-smoke will curl from the gathered folds.
Long-Tongued Neck-Band of Checked Fleece, Sun-Warm Dropping Pebble, and Two Little Whispering Cauldrons
Fashioned by the Mound-Spinsters at Tally 741
In the seasons before the big water parted from the little mud, when the sky was the thickness of greasy broth and the stones on the hillsides had not yet settled into their permanent slumber, the speech of human men was like the knocking together of dry wooden clogs. When a man wished to ask a stranger for an ember to light his pipe, he shouted like an angry gander in a rut, and the other man would strike him with an oak cudgel because he thought he was being challenged to wrestle in the muck. Because their vocal cords were stiff like dried salt-cod, wars were fought over single turnips, and the frontier gates between the river-terraces were always red with pig-grease and spear-rust.
Now, deep under the sod-roofs where the wild thyme roots hang like curtains of gray thread, the Sleih Beggey lived in round burghs of sweet marl and dry yellow shale. They did not shout, nor did they rattle big iron knives when strangers approached their earthen porches. Their women and their grandfathers sat upon low stools of polished alder, weaving speech as soft as curds. They knew that if words are boiled with honey and carded like fine wool, a man can take the skin off an ox without the ox even knowing it hath lost its coat until it feeleth the cold wind at sunset.
In the upper-dirt village of Cross-Gallows, there lived a petty boundary-drover whose name was Illiam of the Sour Throat. Illiam had an eye as sharp as a thorn for spotting stray bullocks, but his tongue was like a coarse kitchen rasp. Whenever the toll-reeves of the High Bridge came down to levy the cart-tax, Illiam would spit red turnip juice upon their boots and roar like a stuck boar.
Because of his rough howling, the town bailiffs seized his grandfather’s milking-cow, threw his two iron cooking-kettles into the duck-pond, and bound Illiam to a birch post until his heels turned blue with frost.
Illiam sat in the cold drizzle upon the green mound called the Sentry’s Kettle, where the heather grows in the shape of a horse’s jaw. His neck was so raw from swearing that he could not swallow his spit, and he tasted only bile and gravel. He reached into his salt-bag and took forth a little pat of fresh yellow butter that his sister had churned at dawn, sweet with the juice of mountain clover, and a bowl of thick elderberry water sweetened with honey-dregs.
He set the crock upon a sunken limestone hearth-rock and wept through his broken teeth.
“O mother who spinneth under the grass,” croaked Illiam into a rabbit-hole. “My cows are taken, my kettles are in the ditch, and tomorrow the Lord of the Red Gate cometh with twelve men-at-arms to take the thatch off my roof because I cannot speak with a civil face. Give me not a sharp sword, for I am too clumsy to fence, but give me the trick of the sweet-spitting mouth, so that I may turn away the wrath of the tax-gatherers before my children are cast upon the freezing common.”
Down in the low spinning-gallery of the seventh barrow, an ancient Ferrishyn mistress of the loom named Caillagh of the Long Spindle was carding the wool of an upland ewe that had never borne a ram-lamb. The steam of the warm clover-butter and the fragrance of the elderberry honey crept down through the worm-casts, dripping right into her clay tea-pipkin.
Caillagh licked the rim of her wooden bowl. Her ears twitched like the ears of an owl when a mouse runs through dry oats.
“Listen, you lazy barrow-girls!” shouted the old earth-wife, tossing her spindle against the peat-wall until it gave a hollow thump. “That is not the greasy swine-dripping of the coast-pirates, nor is it the sour water that the beer-brewers throw into the gutter! That is real morning butter, scraped from a clean wooden paddle, and the clover was picked before the noon fly had walked upon it. The creature howling in the rain hath an ugly pipe, but he knoweth what is due to a grandmother’s breakfast!”
She pulled aside a knot of wild dock-leaves, poked her round face into the upper wind, and caught Illiam by his greasy collar with two brown hands that were as strong as ash-roots. Before he could cough once, she tumbled him headlong down through the turf chimney.
Illiam fell through forty fathoms of dark root-chambers until he sat blinking upon a bench of dry turf. The hearth-room was very warm, and all around sat nine Ferrishyn spinsters, each shorter than a three-legged churn, their cheeks like withered russet apples and their hair bound up with plaited rushes. Upon their laps were little table-frames of bog-oak, and their needles moved with such swiftness that their fingers looked like smoke dancing over a brush-fire.
“Stand there, you great noisy crow,” croaked Caillagh, prodding his shins with an ebony yard-stick. “You long-legged boundary-crawlers think that to win an argument, a man must bray like a hungry donkey on a market day. You yell until your gullets are red, and then you wonder why the king’s men bring chains and iron pikes! A sharp tongue cutteth its own throat, you stupid clod-crusher! The Little People rule the earth not by the heavy axe, but by the knot in the neckwear and the honey on the bannock!”
For nine nights, while Illiam sat eating warm barley-cakes and drinking buttermilk that smelled of wild mint, the spinsters laboured upon the seven hundred and forty-first neck-piece of the barrow’s store.
First, they took the white fleece of a mountain sheep that had grazed only upon the mounds where the wild clover bloometh in double bunches. This wool they washed in sweet rainwater caught in birch bark, steeping it in elderberry tea and heather honey until the threads were as pliable as a spider’s line and smelled like a hot oven in harvest-time. They spun it into a tight twill weave, checkered with the color of fresh cream and wild honey-comb, and lined it with sheep-silk so smooth that no whisker could catch upon it.
Around the hem, an old dwarf-tailor stitched a border of dark peat-brown piping to keep the magic from leaking out into the dirt. With fine needles made from the ribs of small trout, they embroidered running triskelion wheels and branching clover stems, using metallic river-bronze threads that were drawn through holes in a copper plate until they were as thin as a hair from an infant’s crown. Into the inner fold, behind the neck, Caillagh pressed the hot needle-tally: 7-4-1.
Then she brought from an earthen jar two tiny bells of singing bell-bronze, each no bigger than an acorn-cup, with little bronze peas inside balanced so delicately that a man’s breath would set them to murmuring like two bees in a foxglove bloom. These she tucked into the front pleats. Above them, upon a twisted lace of silver wire and flax, she hung an amber-colored pebble of beach-quartz that had been cast out by the fey-springs beneath the tide, still warm with the inner heat of the earth’s belly.
“Now, Illiam of the Foul Tongue,” said the old woman, tying the ends around his thick throat and pulling the knot tight under his chin. “Harken to the domestic law of the mound. When the proud man cometh to demand your flesh, do not spit and do not raise your stick. Touch the amber stone with your forefinger, let your breath slide over the little bells, and speak whatever foolishness cometh into your head. The cravat will spin your words into golden butter, and the proud man will sit in your ditch and listen until his soup is cold and his horses are old.”
“And what fee must I render to the weavers, mistress?” asked Illiam, touching the sheep-silk with his rough thumb.
“On the night of the full moon,” Caillagh said, pointing her crooked finger at his nose, “you shall place upon the Kettle-Stone a basin of sweet ewe’s cream and three clover-cakes baked with wild honey. And beware: if you use this neck-cloth to swindle a widow of her crust, or to whisper lies into the ear of a maiden, or to sell a blind horse to a poor herdsman, the bronze threads will tighten like an iron halter, and you will choke upon your own tongue until your eyes drop into your lap!”
The little women pushed Illiam up through the badger-gate, and he woke sitting against the Sentry’s Kettle with the sun shining bright upon his breeches. The rain had ceased, and down the cart-track came the Lord of the Red Gate, riding upon a high black mare with six crossbow-men and three bailiffs carrying iron chains to take away Illiam’s roof-poles.
“Out of the way, you peasant dog!” shouted the Lord of the Red Gate, raising his heavy horse-whip. “We have come to burn your timbers and take your winter meal, for your mouth hath mocked the King’s justices three times over!”
Illiam’s liver trembled, and his old fury rose up to make him curse. But as his throat tightened, the sheep-silk lining against his skin grew warm and soft like a warm flannel poultice. The amber quartz at his breast began to glow with a deep, buttery radiance, and the two tiny bronze bells beneath the knot began to hum with a sound like a distant pipe-organ playing in a hay-loft.
Illiam touched the knot and spoke.
He did not roar. His voice came out not like a croaking frog, but like a sweet stream of warm cider running out of a wooden spout.
“Ah, my Lord of the High Saddle,” said Illiam, bowing until his cravat brushed his knees, while a sweet vapor of dried clover and hot bannocks drifted up into the horse’s nostrils. “How well the saddle of Spanish cordwain fitteth your lordship’s thighs! It was only yesterday that my old aunt was saying that no man between the two seas hath such an eye for cart-axle regulation as your lordship’s uncle. And is it not a remarkable truth that the gray turnip crop of the lower valley hath five leaves this season instead of three, which according to the third council of the ancient weir-keepers signifieth that all highway dues should properly be paid in dry elderberry twigs rather than in iron currency?”
The Lord of the Red Gate lowered his whip. His eyes became wide and cloudy, like two pond-stones seen through deep water. The crossbow-men leaned upon their weapons, their mouths hanging open, their noses twitching as they smelled the scent of hot honey-cakes in the middle of the moor.
“Elderberry twigs?” muttered the lord, scratching his chin through his helmet-strap. “Indeed… it is a matter of great legal weight. Tell me further concerning these five-leaved turnips, master drover.”
For three hours, while the sun climbed over the hill and the horses stood sleeping in the gorse, Illiam spoke without stopping. He spoke of the history of buttermilk-churns; he recited the lineage of every three-legged sheep that had lived since the great flood; he argued with sweet, musical cadence concerning the seven different ways to thatch a goose-house; and whenever the bailiff attempted to rattle his chains, Illiam merely modulated his tone, the bronze bells hummed their soft chord, and the bailiff sighed and sat down upon a rock to pick thistle-down.
When the church bell in the distant town chimed for the evening angelus, the Lord of the Red Gate woke as if from a pleasant dream by the fire.
“You are an exceedingly upright and learned householder, friend Illiam,” said the lord, wiping a tear of domestic joy from his cheek. “It would be an unchristian outrage to burn the roof of a scholar who understandeth the ancient turnip-statutes so thoroughly. Keep your meal, keep your cow, and accept this silver groat as a token of my profound admiration for your late aunt’s knowledge of axle-trees.”
The horsemen rode away in peace, singing an old cradle-song through the mist.
Illiam adjusted his neck-band, walked back to his cottage, and from that day forward he was known throughout the hundred as Illiam Honey-Throat. Never again did a bailiff cross his door-sill with iron, and whenever disputes arose between the clans concerning cattle-fences or well-rights, Illiam was summoned to sit at the table. He would touch his cravat, unleash a torrent of rambling, polite domestic philosophy, and the disputants would embrace in tears, divide their land equally, and spend their silver on spiced ale before the sun had gone down.
For seventy winters Illiam lived in prosperity. On every night of the full moon, a clean bowl of yellow cream and three honey-cakes sat upon the Kettle-Stone, and the burgh-women below carded their wool in contentment. And when Illiam finally died in his bed at the age of ninety-four, his last words were so beautifully constructed, so sweet with the fragrance of clover, and so full of bewildering proverbs about butter-making that the parish priest wept for two days and forgot to charge his family for the burial-earth.
Moral of the Story: A man who meeteth the world with angry shouts and stubborn pride will soon find his cattle driven off and his house pulled down about his ears; but he who clotheth his speech in the gentle grace of domestic courtesy, honoring the small and unseen neighbors of the earth with quiet respect, can turn aside the wrath of princes and conquer the sharpest spear with nothing more than a well-tied knot and a stream of patient honey.
