Lore: Among the river-delta and peat-marsh clans of Saṃsāra, the genesis of life is regarded as the most precarious crossing between the unseen spirit void and the mortal coil. Clan midwives, egg-tenders, and lineage-shamans maintain that an unborn soul does not merely grow—it must be continually sung to, warmed, and shielded from hungry wandering shades that feed upon nascent vitality. The Brood-Mother’s Amber Nidus was first fashioned by elder marsh shamans who tended communal incubators of waterfowl, river-ox calves, and premature clan infants. By capturing the primordial spirits of maternal nesting within fossilized pine resin, the nidus acts as a spiritual surrogate womb, attuning the wielder to the quiet hum of developing heartbeats, gestational rhythms, and the delicate cellular thresholds of nascent life.
Description: This palm-sized talisman consists of an egg-shaped pebble of unpolished, honey-golden amber cradled within an open nest of woven swamp willow twigs and water-cured reed sinew. Suspended deep within the translucent golden resin rests a dormant, curled embryo of a river salamander, frozen in its earliest stage of development alongside tiny bubbles of primordial bog gas. The exterior of the amber is etched with microscopic spiraling seed-glyphs rubbed with fine cinnabar paste. When cupped in the hands or placed near developing life, the amber softens slightly to the touch, pulsing with a faint, rhythmic heartbeat accompanied by a steady, soothing warmth reminiscent of fresh brooding straw.

- Item Armor Check (AC): 0
- Item Health Points (HP): 10 (Resilience 10 * Tier 1)
- Range: Touch / 10 feet
- Resonance Requirement: Simple attunement (must spend 10 minutes in quiet meditation, cupping the amber egg against the chest, matching one’s breathing to its internal rhythmic pulse, and whispering the names of three generations of maternal ancestors).
- Extradimensional Interaction: Deactivates within an extradimensional space.
Specific Slot:
- Held / Off-Hand Slot or Neck Slot (can be held in one hand or worn suspended from a braided reed necklace).
Passives Magic:
- Auspice of the Nascent Pulse: While the nidus is worn or held, the avatar gains an innate spiritual awareness of gestational life within 10 feet. The user intuitively perceives whether any nearby creature or egg is carrying developing offspring, determining the precise gestational stage, physical vitality, sex, and the presence of any natural blight, congenital affliction, or parasitic intrusion threatening the unborn.
- Brood-Warmth Haven: The talisman constantly radiates a self-regulating, gentle micro-climate of incubation across a 1-foot radius around the amber. Any natural egg, seed, or premature organism placed in direct contact with the nidus is immune to environmental freezing, damp rot, and sudden thermal shock, maintaining optimal developmental conditions indefinitely.
Activable Magics:
- Quicken the Dormant Germ (Action Cost: 1 Action): The avatar presses the amber nidus against a fertile egg, plant seed, or dormant botanical spore and whispers a rhythmic brooding chant. The subject undergoes a rapid acceleration of its developmental cycle: a bird, reptile, or amphibian egg hatches within 1 minute into a healthy, viable hatchling that bonds peacefully with the wielder, or a dormant seed/spore immediately sprouts into a vigorous seedling. This ability can be used three times per day, resetting at sunrise.
- Womb-Shield Ward (Action Cost: 1 Full Action): The user raises the nidus and calls upon the protective mantle of the primordial brood-mother, targeting themselves or an adjacent pregnant creature, newborn, or clutch of eggs. For 1 hour, a translucent, golden-amber aura wraps the target in a protective spiritual sheath: the target gains 3 temporary hit points and resistance to poison and necrotic damage from non-magical and natural sources. If the recipient would suffer an involuntary miscarriage, premature labor, or shell breach from blunt trauma, the ward shatters, absorbing the shock completely and dispersing into fragrant pine smoke. Can be used once per day, resetting at dusk.

Procurement, Liquidation, and Market Valuation of the Brood-Mother’s Amber Nidus
Municipal Apothecaries, Midwifery Guildhalls, and Botanical Ateliers
- Environment and Structure: Located along the quiet, paved terraces of upper residential wards or near city hospice complexes, these formal establishments operate from clean, whitewashed stone storefronts. Managed by licensed apothecaries, recognized clan doulas, or guild herbalists, the rooms feature glazed terra-cotta storage urns, labeled drawers of dried roots, polished brass balance scales, and damp indoor planters filled with rare medicinal sprouts. The air carries the herbal scent of chamomile, dried valerian, warm beeswax, and distilled spirits.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Purchasing the talisman in a municipal apothecary involves a registered healthcare transaction entered into the local guild register. Payment is completed through direct account debits managed by the municipal world bank or in minted silver coins. Customers holding certified standing with an allied medical consortium, husbandry lodge, or civic health board receive a standard institutional discount equal to 10% multiplied by their tier. Under typical urban mercantile conditions, retail pricing for the amber nidus ranges between 75 silver to 110 silver.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: When an avatar sells an intact nidus to a guild apothecary, the herbalist checks the amber under a jewel-glass to confirm the salamander embryo remains intact without internal clouding, and tests the willow casing to ensure the sap binding has not dried or crumbled. The guild factor applies a standard trade clearance deduction, discounting their purchase offer by 10% multiplied by the avatar’s tier level. An avatar can expect a direct deposit of 35 silver to 55 silver into their world bank ledger upon completing the formal registry paperwork.
Delta Fishing Hamlets, Reed-Weaver Encampments, and Peat-Marsh Bazaars
- Environment and Structure: Erected upon elevated stilts over brackish river deltas or clustered along floating cedar pontoons in peat marshes, these rural markets cater to fen-folk, crocodile wranglers, and communal egg-tenders. The stalls consist of reed-thatch lean-tos and flat-bottomed punt-barges lashed to cypress pilings. Shelves are stocked with woven reed nests, dried bladderwrack, gourds of duck grease, bundles of cattail down, and terra-cotta warming jars. The air is thick with the earthy smell of peat smoke, damp silt, river fish, and curing sedge grass.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Trading in marsh communities is an informal, spoken negotiation conducted over bowls of fermented rice beer or smoked catfish beside communal smoking troughs. Remote delta settlements rarely use municipal banks or printed chits; transactions require physical trade currency, such as copper ingots, electrum rings, raw river pearls, or direct barters of cured ox hides, dried salt-fish, and iron fish-hooks. Because marsh families rely on brood charms to protect livestock clutches and premature infants against marsh fevers, local shamans sell the talisman for 11 gold to 16 gold (or 22 to 32 electrum), though avatars recognized as marsh-kin or tribal allies can barter for it using valuable wetland commodities.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: Delta midwives and communal incubator tenders eagerly purchase amber niduses to replace talismans cracked during flood seasons or to supply new marsh-folk shamans. Payment is made immediately in physical trade specie, smoked provisions, or uncut freshwater pearls. An avatar liquidating the item in a stilt settlement receives an unrecorded payout of 6 gold to 9 gold in physical coin or equivalent trade goods, free from civic excise duties or municipal inspection tariffs.
Exotic Menageries, Beast-Smuggler Vaults, and Black-Market Auctions
- Environment and Structure: Tucked away in humid sub-cellars beneath waterfront docks, shadowed stockyards on the city periphery, or damp cavern stalls within criminal free-ports, these clandestine markets cater to illicit creature breeders, poachers, and private collectors. The facilities are lined with heavy iron-barred cages, acoustic dampening quilts, and oil-heated glass terrariums holding rare, stolen beast eggs. The atmosphere smells of musk, wet sawdust, sulfur warming stones, and damp masonry.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Gaining access requires an underworld voucher, an introduction from an established exotic animal wrangler, or a heavy bribe paid at the street door. Talismans found here are illicit salvage: pried from the ancestral shrines of flooded marsh clans, taken from raided breeding sanctuaries, or smuggled past imperial quarantine posts. Deals are transacted strictly in cash, without receipts or guarantees against lingering ancestral curses. World bank transfers are strictly refused; buyers must present unmarked physical gold bullion or raw silver ingots, with asking prices sitting between 14 gold to 20 gold.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: Underworld beast brokers, wyvern breeders, and poachers pay top coin for brood charms to force-hatch stolen monster clutches or safely transport fragile subterranean eggs past customs checkpoints. The exchange is completely untracked, leaving no ledger footprints for urban constables or conservation wardens. An avatar can secure an immediate, untaxed cash payout of 7 gold to 11 gold in hard specie, with no questions raised regarding the origin of the fossil resin.
Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Brood-Mother’s Amber Nidus
Peat Marshes, Mangrove Deltas, and Stagnant Bogs
- Defense: In disease-choked wetlands where rot spores, foul water, and leech swarms threaten the vitality of living creatures, the user relies on Brood-Warmth Haven to protect delicate biological samples, poultices, or fragile allies from sudden chilling damp and water-borne pathogens. If the party is ambushed by venomous marsh vipers or acid-spitting drakes, invoking Womb-Shield Ward wraps an exposed ally or pregnant scout in a golden resin sheath, granting temporary protection and blunting necrotic rot or toxic venoms that would otherwise poison the bloodstream.
- Offense: When stalking bog raiders or territorial marsh beasts, the user employs Quicken the Dormant Germ on wild flora. By pressing the nidus into dormant seed-clusters of choking marsh briars, razor-grass, or sleep-spore fungi along a narrow embankment, the user causes rapid, violent botanical growth within seconds. This sudden overgrowth tangles the legs of retreating enemies, snags the oars of pursuit skiffs, and creates a dense wall of briars that corners hostile targets in deep, sucking mud.
Subterranean Caverns, Hive Dens, and Fungal Grottoes
- Defense: In sunless caves where cold air and noxious gas pockets snuff out life, Auspice of the Nascent Pulse acts as an early-warning organic sensor. The wielder detects the subtle, rhythmic pulse of subterranean beast broods, chittering vermin eggs, or parasitic spores before entering an infested chamber. When cave-ins or falling stalactites threaten the vanguard, Womb-Shield Ward can be triggered to absorb crushing blunt trauma, keeping the wielder or a critically injured bearer from being crushed beneath falling rubble.
- Offense: In encounters within giant insect nests, troglodyte hatcheries, or subterranean predator lairs, the avatar exploits Quicken the Dormant Germ to trigger biological chaos. By forcing the rapid, premature hatching of unattended beast clutches or fungal spore-pods behind enemy lines, the newly hatched organisms emerge in a frenzy, creating an instant, screeching distraction that breaks enemy defensive formations, triggers territorial infighting among the brood-guardians, and exposes vulnerable flank positions.
Arid Deserts, Salt Flats, and Sun-Scorched Badlands
- Defense: In searing wastelands where blistering daylight alternates with freezing nights, Brood-Warmth Haven maintains a steady, life-preserving microclimate for vital provisions, water gourds, and resting animal companions, shielding them from fatal thermal shock. Auspice of the Nascent Pulse allows the user to monitor traveling companions and pack beasts for heat exhaustion, dehydration, or hidden internal distress long before visible physical collapse occurs.
- Offense: When cornered near dormant desert flora—such as desiccated iron-root seeds, spine-bearing barrel cacti, or moisture-seeking creepers buried beneath the dunes—the wielder uses Quicken the Dormant Germ to burst them into sudden, jagged growth. The erupting thorny thickets pierce the soft footpads of pursuing desert raiders or pack hyenas, creating hazardous, impassable caltrop fields across open sand.
Fortified Keeps, Urban Tenements, and Sieged Settlements
- Defense: During prolonged sieges or urban pestilence outbreaks where rations spoil and pregnant civilians or infants face starvation and fever, the talisman serves as an emergency hospice tool. Womb-Shield Ward shields vulnerable hospital wards from explosive siege-shrapnel and infectious miasmas, while Brood-Warmth Haven keeps malnourished newborns alive through harsh winter supply shortages without requiring wood fires that attract enemy archers.
- Offense: In covert urban espionage or counter-siege operations, the user combines Auspice of the Nascent Pulse and Quicken the Dormant Germ to conduct subtle sabotage. The wielder can identify pregnant noble bloodlines or hidden beast pens through solid wooden partitions. By slipping dried seeds of invasive strangler-vines or masonry-cracking weeds into the mortar of fortress walls, warehouse floors, or aqueduct joints and rapidly accelerating their maturation, the wielder forces thick root systems to swell within the stonework, cracking defensive foundations and creating structural breaches for an infiltrating strike team.

Perception of Activation:
Sight
- User’s Perspective: Upon channeling spiritual intent, the cloudy honey-golden amber clears into glass-like transparency, illuminated from within by a warm, radiant amber light. The dormant river salamander embryo stirs faintly, its gills flaring with soft golden threads of light as ancient micro-bubbles in the resin cycle slowly upward. The cinnabar-filled seed-glyphs on the exterior ignite with a glowing vermilion flame, casting spinning, embryonic shadow-ribbons across the user’s palms.
- Observer’s Perspective: Witnesses see the talisman pulse with a steady, rhythmic cadence like a lantern breathing in the dark. A translucent, honey-colored sphere of golden light expands roughly one foot outward from the woven willow nest, wrapping the bearer’s hands or the target clutch in a soft, amniotic glow.
- Positives: The warm, golden luminescence provides a gentle, non-glaring light source sufficient to inspect medical injuries or check nested eggs in total darkness without causing blindness.
- Negatives: In dark caves, marshes, or stealth operations, the glowing amber beacon immediately draws the attention of hungry nocturnal predators and enemy patrols.
Sound
- User’s Perspective: The wielder hears the steady, rhythmic thump-thump of a slowing, primordial heartbeat echoing as if underwater, accompanied by the gentle, sloshing whisper of maternal fluids, rustling dry nest-straw, and the faint, breathy whistling of sleeping amphibians.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers within arm’s reach hear a soft, low-frequency thrumming sound reminiscent of a purring cat or a steady muffled drum beat, followed by the faint crackle of dried twigs warming beside a gentle fire.
- Positives: The rhythmic pulse has an immediate, soothing auditory effect that calms hyperventilating patients, frightened livestock, or distressed allies.
- Negatives: The low-frequency vibration can resonate through hollow subterranean tunnels or wooden stilt floors, alerting acoustic predators like burrowing worms or trained guard hounds.
Smell
- User’s Perspective: A rich, comforting aroma fills the nasal passages—the resinous, sunny scent of heated ancient pine sap blended with sweet marsh rushes, warm bird down, clover honey, and the clean mineral smell of damp river loam after spring rain.
- Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing near the talisman catches the distinctive, warm fragrance of fresh brooding straw, melted beeswax, and sun-baked pine needles, cutting through damp, murky air.
- Positives: Completely masks the sickening stench of stagnant swamp water, necrotic decay, or sulfurous volcanic vapors, allowing the user to operate in putrid environments without nausea.
- Negatives: The sweet, honeyed scent of blooming sap and nesting birds can attract swarming insects, bog flies, or scavenging carnivores hunting for unguarded clutches.
Taste
- User’s Perspective: The mouth fills with a soothing, coating sweetness like raw mountain honey and warm chamomile infusion, accompanied by a clean, lingering taste of mineral-rich spring runoff.
- Observer’s Perspective: Nearby allies report a subtle, sweet resinous sensation on the back of the throat, as if inhaling steam over a kettle of boiling pine buds.
- Positives: Diminishes nausea, bile reflux, and the sour taste of exhaustion or venom-induced fever.
- Negatives: Leaves a sweet, sticky film on the palate that momentarily dulls taste-based perception, making it harder to detect faint trace poisons in food or water.
Touch
- User’s Perspective: The hardened amber softens under the fingers into a dense, yielding texture similar to warm beeswax or smoothed river leather. It radiates an even, fever-soothing warmth (roughly 37°C / 98.6°F) that sinks deep into the wielder’s wrists, accompanied by a gentle, rhythmic throbbing sensation that matches the wielder’s pulse.
- Observer’s Perspective: When receiving the ward or touching the nest, a subject feels an enveloping, amniotic warmth wash over their skin, akin to sinking into a warm mineral bath or being wrapped in a thick down quilt straight from the hearth.
- Positives: Provides immediate relief from hypothermia, shivering, and shock, relaxing knotted abdominal muscles and easing labor pains.
- Negatives: The intense, relaxing warmth can induce drowsiness or lethargy in the wielder if maintained for extended periods in freezing weather.
Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- User’s Perspective (Gestational Resonance): The wielder senses nearby living organisms not as physical bodies, but as nested rings of vitality. Unborn embryos and fertile seeds appear as tiny, spinning spindles of gold thread; the user instinctively feels the precise age, vitality, and micro-fractures in an eggshell or embryonic sac.
- User’s Perspective (The Brood-Mind Tether): The user feels a fleeting, instinctive communion with wild nesting mothers across the marsh, sensing their collective maternal vigilance, territorial caution, and fierce protective instincts.
- Observer’s Perspective (Maternal Shield Presence): Targets wrapped in the ward experience a profound, primal sense of sanctuary, feeling as though an immense, ancient guardian is curling protective wings or coils around their body, making fear feel distant and hollow.
- Positives: Grants absolute clarity when triaging delicate life, ensuring the avatar never accidentally harms a viable seed or misjudges an infant’s survivability.
- Negatives: The wielder experiences a sympathetic visceral ache whenever an egg is cracked, a seed crushed, or a nascent life extinguished within sensory range, causing temporary emotional distress.
Recipe: Binding of the Brood-Mother’s Amber Nidus
Materials Needed
- One palm-sized, unpolished nodule of clear fossil pine amber (naturally encasing a dormant or prehistoric wetland salamander embryo)
- Twelve flexible young swamp-willow twigs (harvested during early spring budding, stripped of outer leaves)
- Four feet of water-cured river-reed sinew (split and degummed)
- One-half ounce of mineral cinnabar (native mercuric sulfide, dry crystalline form)
- Two fluid ounces of clarified swamp willow sap (harvested via fluid collector as a natural binding resin)
- One-quarter ounce of dried cattail down and marsh sweetgrass ash (burned in a maternal brooding brazier)
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (pulverized into an ultrafine, translucent golden dust to conduct embryonic life-resonance)
Tools Required
- Fine bronze or iron carving stylus and micro-scraper
- Mortar and pestle for pulverizing cinnabar and crystal matrix
- Fluid collector (graduated syringe with needle for targeted sap application)
- Small willow-bending jig and bone weaving bodkin
- Slate lapping stone and soft river-silt buffing hide
- Low-heat brooding brazier or stone warming dish
Skill Requirements
- Biomancy / Embryological Lore (Trained Level 2 minimum)
- Basketry / Reed-Weaving (Trained Level 1 minimum)
- Alchemical or Magical Crafting (Trained Level 2 minimum)
- Shamanic Lore / Spirit Communion (Trained Level 1 minimum)
Crafting Steps
- Amber Inspection and Shaping: Clean the raw amber nodule using cold river water and the slate lapping stone. Carefully abrade away external limestone rind without generating frictional heat, exposing the suspended salamander embryo to clear light while maintaining an organic, egg-like contour.
- Micro-Engraving Seed-Glyphs: Using the micro-scraper and bronze stylus under oblique lantern light, score fine spiraling seed-glyphs, developmental coils, and maternal warding marks across the outer curvature of the amber egg.
- Cinnabar Paste Compounding and Inlay: Pulverize the cinnabar crystals into a fine flour using the mortar and pestle. Blend the red powder with one fluid ounce of clarified willow sap drawn from the fluid collector to create a viscous vermilion paste. Rub this mixture into the engraved seed-glyphs, wiping the exterior surface flush with a damp linen cloth so only the incisions retain the pigment.
- Resonant Crystal Dusting: Pulverize the Tier 1 Magic Crystal into micron-grade dust and suspend it within the remaining willow sap. Using the fluid collector, deposit microscopic drops along the seam lines of the glyphs, sealing the cinnabar inlay with a durable, magic-conductive gloss.
- Weaving the Willow Cradle: Soak the twelve swamp-willow twigs in tepid marsh water until pliable. Using the willow-bending jig, weave the twigs into a cupped, open-mesh nesting basket tailored precisely to hold the amber egg firmly without shifting.
- Sinew Binding and Lining: Lashing with the bone bodkin, secure the rim and base of the willow nest using water-cured reed sinew. Line the inner contact points of the basket with a thin bedding of cattail down mixed with a pinch of sweetgrass ash to cushion the amber.
- Assembly and Seating: Seat the carved amber egg into the willow cradle, drawing the upper sinew loops taut around the amber’s waist so it remains locked within its woven nest while leaving the central salamander embryo visible from all sides.
- Maternal Resonant Attunement: Place the assembled nidus upon a stone warming dish heated over the brooding brazier to body temperature (roughly 37°C). Cup both hands around the nest and chant the traditional clan gestation lullaby for fifteen minutes, sustaining a slow, unbroken breathing pattern until the interior amber softens to the touch, pulses with an audible rhythmic heartbeat, and radiates a golden-amber aura.
Yellow Sun-Stone That Brooded Unborn and Turned Aside Marsh-Fever
In the very former days of Saṃsāra, when the great rivers of the middle mud did flow thick like gruel and the sun did not rise high but hung yellow and low like an oil saucer, the people of the Low Delta did dwell upon the green waters. They did build no strong stone gates, nor did they possess hard bronze swords to cleave their neighbors. Their houses were bundles of water-reeds tied to tall cypress-poles, and when the gray rot-vapors of the marsh did climb from the black bottom-silt, the small children and the beasts did turn cold, their skin covered in spotted moss, and the mothers did weep into the brown foam, for their wombs did shed the fruit before the moon could count its rings.
In those mud-circles there did live a woman of the reed-beds whose dialect-name is written on the broken slab as Nu-Aka, which in the old, poorly spoken grammar signifies “She Who Listens into the Wet Egg.” Nu-Aka was not tall, nor had she cattle or iron kettles. She did sit all day upon a floating platform of hollow rushes, watching the river lizards that lay their soft white leather-eggs inside the warm mounds of rotting ferns. She did not take an iron prong to spear the nesting beasts, nor did she crack the eggs to eat the rich yolk with parched barley.
When the great rains did drown the banks and wash away the mossy nests, Nu-Aka did wade through the brown waters with a basket woven of swamp-willow twigs. Deep within a bed of blue clay, where an ancient pine forest had drowned ten thousand turnings before, her hand did find a yellow pebble. It was not a common river-flint; it was a drop of hardened sun-sap, golden like wild honey, inside of which slept a small, curled river-salamander with tiny frilled ears, frozen in the middle of its first waking before the world had grown cold.
Nu-Aka did not trade the stone for salt or dried fish. She did sit beside her mud-hearth, taking a sharp bone-splinter and scratching upon the yellow skin of the pebble the secret signs of the earliest wet-mothers—the coil of the seed that pushes through the muck, the round belly that turns aside the spear, and the small heart that knocks inside the shell. She did rub the red cinnabar of the mountain veins into the scratchings, tying the amber into a nest of damp willow shoots with strings of dried eel-gut, and she did breathe upon it while singing the long, low song of the frog that sits in the dark grass. When she did blow her warm breath upon the stone, the amber did turn soft like warm grease, and from its belly did come a steady knocking, like a small fist striking upon a drum of hide: thump-thump, thump-thump.
In that season of bad waters, there was a lord of the dry ridges named Bar-Gulg, which the bad scribe translated as “He Who Has Seven Thousand Horns of Steer.” Bar-Gulg was a man of swollen belly and heavy copper wrist-hoops. He had four hundred wives in huts of dried mud, and three hundred red cows that ate the dry hill-grass. He did look upon the reed-dwellers of the low marsh and spit into his beard, saying to his spear-men: “The people of the water-mud are like frogs that eat flies! They possess no herds of red cattle, and their children die in the belly because their women are weak like wet paper! The gods favor the dry hill where the bull leaps with strong shanks! When my four hundred wives drop their sons, they shall take axes and chop down the willow huts of the fen!”
Bar-Gulg did boast very high, but the great pestilence of the red swamp-fever—which the ancients called the Lung-Rotting Mist—did arise from the stagnant bogs. It did not stay in the low water; it crawled upon its bellies up the dry ridges like a blanket of gray grease. The cows of Bar-Gulg did fall upon their knees, their milk turning yellow and bitter like bile. His wives did burn with hot skin like heated baking stones, and their bellies did twist in agony; one after another, their unborn fruit did slide from them into the dust, cold and gray before the hair could sprout upon their heads.
Bar-Gulg did sacrifice fifty fat heifers to the stone-altars of the sun, and he did hire nine sorcerers from the dry hills who did beat copper cymbals and scream until their throats did bleed. But the stone-altars remained dry and deaf, the copper cymbals did not turn the rot-vapor, and the last of his royal concubines—she who carried his chosen heir in her belly—did fall upon the fleece floor, her breath coming in short rattles like dry seeds shaken in a gourd, the red life-water running from her skirts onto the woven rushes.
Bar-Gulg did tear his gray beard and cast his copper hoops into the horse-trough. He did run down from the dry ridge into the brown water of the delta, crying with a loud and ruined voice until his boots were stuck in the black mire.
Nu-Aka did come paddling upon her floating reed-raft, her two hands holding the woven nest of willow twigs.
Bar-Gulg did fall upon his face in the green scum, crying: “Old crone of the frog-holes! My priests have beaten their drums till their hands are broken, yet the child inside my woman does perish, and the seed of my house is turned to ash! If you have a charm of bone or root, give it to my hand, and I shall give you fifty fat steers and three wagons of barley!”
Nu-Aka did look down upon him with eyes like black water-beetles, and she did say through the broken script: “The bull that mounts the cow knows only the fury of his horns, but he knows nothing of the slow heat that knits the bone within the egg. Your copper noise cannot make a heart beat that has not yet learned to breathe.”
She did step from her raft and walk up the stony ridge to the sick-tent of Bar-Gulg. The air within the hut was thick with the reek of burning sulfur, dried dung, and the sour sweat of death. The young mother lay upon her back, her teeth locked together and her belly shivering like a dying fish cast upon the gravel.
Nu-Aka did push aside the nine shouting sorcerers with her elbows. She took the amber egg from its willow nest and pressed the honey-colored stone against the swollen, shivering belly of the dying woman.
Immediately, the amber did turn clear like mountain spring-runoff. The small, curled river-salamander within did open its golden eyes, and a warm, glowing light, the color of heated wild honey, did burst outward from the stone in a round circle of sweet air. The sour stench of sulfur and rot did vanish from the room, replaced by the scent of fresh brooding straw, heated pine resin, and the sweet blossoms of the water-clover.
The shivering belly of the mother grew still. From the center of the amber, the steady, primordial pulse—thump-thump, thump-thump—did echo through the wooden poles of the tent. As the heart of the ancient stone did beat, the parched throat of the young mother did relax; the red fever-flush did leave her cheeks, and the dying child within her womb did catch the rhythm of the golden salamander, its small lungs drawing life not from the diseased air, but from the deep, undisturbed spring of the primordial earth-mother.
For seven turnings of the sun, Nu-Aka did not leave the couch. She did not eat the roast mutton of Bar-Gulg, nor did she speak to the priests. She sat upon the floor and held the willow cradle, humming the low water-lullaby, keeping the amber pressed against the woman’s navel until the tenth day was completed.
On the dawn of the tenth day, the young mother did sit up without pain, and she did bring forth from her body a living boy, round and fat like a river-melon, his skin clear of the red fever and his cry loud like the marsh-heron at sunrise.
Bar-Gulg did fall to the earth before the old woman, offering her the reins of all his red cattle and the copper keys to his grain-towers.
Nu-Aka did not take the reins, nor did she lay her hand upon the copper keys. She took up her basket of willow twigs and seated the honey-colored amber back into its nest of cattail down. She did say to the chieftain: “Keep your red steers, for they eat only grass; and keep your copper cymbals, for they make only noise. When the storm comes, the high mountain-oak that boasts of its hard timber is split in two by the thunder-stroke; but the soft egg that lies tucked deep in the warm mud does wake and crawl forth to see the morning sun.”
And she did paddle her reed-raft back into the green fog of the great marshes.
Across all the later ages of Saṃsāra, the grandmothers of the stilt-clans did carve the golden amber with the sign of the salamander, wearing it upon their breasts when the birth-bed was laid, so that the gentle heat of the first marshes might shield the tiny pulse before the world could break its shell.
Moral of the Story: The arrogant boast of their violent strength, their shouting priests, and their barren wealth, yet all their fury cannot hold a flickering life against the cold; for true mastery over the beginnings of things belongs not to the loud and the proud, but to the gentle watcher who knows how to shelter the seed, feed the hidden ember, and wait upon the patient turning of the egg.

- The target gains armor against the next source of physical trauma, toxic gas, or necrotic harm before the end of the score.
- If an attack would cause fatal trauma to an unborn or developing organism, the ward shatters instead of applying harm (absorbs the full consequence).
- Complications: A 1–3 result on Attune can awaken hungry primordial swamp spirits, cause runaway fungal blooms in nearby gear, or trigger intense sympathetic labor pains in the user.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)
Item: Brood-Mother’s Amber Nidus Wondrous Item, common (requires attunement)
Properties:
- The talisman weighs 1 pound and can be held in one hand or worn as an amulet, functioning as a druidic focus or holy symbol.
- Auspice of the Nascent Pulse (Passive): While holding or wearing the nidus, you have advantage on Wisdom (Medicine) and Wisdom (Perception) checks made to detect pregnancy, diagnose health conditions in gestating creatures, assess the viability of eggs or seeds, and identify internal parasites or non-magical poisons within 10 feet.
- Brood-Warmth Haven (Passive): The talisman constantly maintains a gentle, incubation-grade microclimate in a 1-foot radius. Non-magical eggs, seeds, and premature organisms in direct contact with the nidus cannot be harmed by non-magical cold, damp rot, or sudden freezing environments.
- Quicken the Dormant Germ (Action, 3/Day): You press the amber nidus against a non-magical, fertile egg, botanical seed, or plant spore. An egg immediately begins an accelerated incubation, hatching within 1 minute into a healthy infant creature that is friendly toward you. A seed or spore immediately sprouts into an adult non-magical seedling or vine up to 5 feet in length. The nidus regains all expended uses daily at dawn.
- Womb-Shield Ward (Action, 1/Day): You touch the nidus to yourself or an adjacent willing creature that is pregnant, a newborn, or a clutch of eggs. For 1 hour, the target gains 3 temporary hit points and resistance to poison damage. If the target takes bludgeoning damage that would rupture an egg clutch or induce premature labor or miscarriage, the ward immediately ends, completely negating that instance of damage as the golden shield dissolves into fragrant pine smoke. The nidus regains this ability daily at dusk.
