Shamanic 803 of the Steppe Hearth Censer Flail

Lore:

  • Forged and woven by the hearth-keepers and storm-baksy of the high Kazakh steppe, this swinging incense flail embodies the primordial communion between the nomadic camp and the four elemental spirits (Iye): the Fire of the Hearth (Ot-Ana), the Wind of the Open Plain (Zhel-Ata), the Water of the Glacier-Melt, and the Earth of the Grazing Soil.
  • Steppe shamans carry the censer at the head of seasonal caravans to appease capricious weather spirits, clear grazing passes choked with mountain frost, and call down guiding winds to disperse seasonal steppe blazes.
  • Rather than subjugating the elements through force, the implement operates through ritual hospitality, burning wild mountain herbs and mountain birch charcoal to invite elemental spirits to manifest as helpful gusts, protective embers, and defensive barriers of pressurized dust.
  • Anchored with a coin-sized Tier 1 carnelian-fire crystal at its balance collar, the flail channels the proverb that he who feeds the hearth-fire never freezes in the gale, establishing the avatar as a recognized guest-friend of elemental forces.

Description:

  • The weapon is a twenty-eight-inch ceremonial war-flail and smoldering thurible, featuring a haft turned from dense, charred mountain juniper wrapped in braided rawhide and stitched felt.
  • Suspended from the haft by seven links of hand-forged bronze chain is a spherical, perforated censer-head shaped like a miniature steppe yurt, topped with a domed cupola (shanyrak) vent.
  • The censer is forged from pierced brass alloyed with copper, allowing smoldering embers, dry wormwood, and juniper resin inside to vent thin, swirling ribbons of fragrant blue and orange smoke.
  • Directly beneath the chain collar on the wooden haft sits an uncut, coin-sized Tier 1 carnelian-fire crystal that pulses with the steady heat of red-hot coals whenever an elemental rite is initiated.
  • Affixed around the base of the chain collar are four small bronze wind-chimes and strips of red, blue, white, and yellow silk ribbons that stream horizontally, indicating local elemental currents and ambient barometric pressure.

  • Suggested Market Value: 36 Silver coins or 72 Nickel pieces (standardized across frontier waystations, nomad camps, and mountain trading posts)

Multiple Passives Magic:

  • Elemental Current Divination: While holding the flail, the avatar passively senses subtle environmental shifts up to 1 mile away, including sudden barometric drops, impending flash floods, prairie grass fires, dust storms, or the presence of latent elemental spirits.
  • Hearth-Keeper’s Thermal Ward: The wielder and up to three adjacent allies suffer no penalties from extreme natural environmental cold down to -20°C or natural desert heat up to 45°C, as the censer radiates an ambient sphere of balanced hearth warmth.
  • Smolder-Step Veil: When moving through areas containing natural smoke, fog, sand, or snowdrifts, the avatar does not suffer obscured vision, coughing, or movement penalties caused by the airborne particulate matter.

Multiple Activable Magics:

  • Gale-Whip Ember Arc: As an action, the avatar whirls the smoking censer overhead in a tight figure-eight and lashes it forward toward a target within 15 feet. A concussive gust of compressed air carrying white-hot embers rushes forward. The target must succeed on a DC 11 saving throw or take 1d6 fire and bludgeoning damage, catch fire (taking 1d4 ongoing fire damage at the start of its turn until extinguished), and be knocked back 5 feet by the localized micro-gale.
  • Shanyrak Smoke Screen: As an action, the avatar taps the censer against the ground and exhales an incantation, causing the yurt-shaped vessel to vent an immediate 15-foot-radius sphere of thick, fragrant juniper smoke centered on the user. The smoke heavily obscures the area for 1 minute, though the avatar and designated companions can see through it clearly. Non-allied creatures entering the smoke must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution save or be blinded and coughing while inside the plume.
  • Hearth-Tithe Conflagration Ward: As a reaction when targeted by a physical melee strike or an elemental projectile within 10 feet, the wielder jerks the chain taut to snap the burning censer between themselves and the incoming attack. A sudden thermal upwelling and ring of crackling embers flash into existence, granting a +2 bonus to Armor Check against the triggering attack. If the attack misses, the attacker takes 1d4 fire damage from the erupting backdraft.

Tactical Elementalism and Environmental Roleplay of the Steppe Hearth-Censer Flail

  • High-Altitude Steppe Passes, Glacial Gorges, and Winter Blizzards:
    • Environmental Context: Freezing mountain ridges, steep scree paths, and howling blizzard gales where sub-zero winds sap stamina, ice slicks make footing precarious, and mountain frost-beasts stalk travelers.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • While guiding a party through biting snowdrifts, the avatar rests the smoldering juniper censer against the group’s center line; Hearth-Keeper’s Thermal Ward projects an ambient aura of hearth warmth, preventing hypothermia, frostbite, and stiffened weapon hands down to -20°C.
      • When sudden mountain squalls or blinding whiteouts strike, Smolder-Step Veil ensures the avatar’s sight remains unobstructed by whipping snow, while Elemental Current Divination warns of falling barometric pressure and impending snow avalanches minutes before they break.
      • If a mountain predator lunges from a snow ridge, the avatar triggers the Hearth-Tithe Conflagration Ward, snapping the bronze chain to erect a swirling barrier of crackling embers and hot updrafts that scorches the beast and turns aside its charge.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • When ambushers attempt to bottle the party up in a narrow icy gorge, the avatar whirls the yurt-censer overhead and launches a Gale-Whip Ember Arc; a blast of superheated air and white-hot charcoal coals explodes into the enemy line, shattering ice under their feet, burning through heavy furs, and knocking the vanguard backward into the scree.
      • At close quarters, the avatar swings the heavy, perforated brass head in tight loops, using the weighted, burning vessel as a bludgeon that crushes mountain armor while scorching exposed flesh with glowing coals.
  • Arid Desert Salt Flats, Sun-Baked Dunes, and Summer Scrublands:
    • Environmental Context: Scorching salt pans, shimmering heat mirages, blinding alkaline dust storms, and dry brush where brush fires spread with catastrophic speed and water reserves evaporate rapidly.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Traversing cracked salt flats under an unrelenting midday sun, the wielder relies on Hearth-Keeper’s Thermal Ward to insulate companions from heat exhaustion up to 45°C, while Elemental Current Divination detects approaching sand whirlwinds or volatile brush fires miles away.
      • When a sudden desert dust storm roars across the flats, Smolder-Step Veil allows the avatar to navigate through the blinding grit without choking or suffering vision penalties, while the silk streamers and wind-chimes read subtle air currents to maintain a true bearing.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Confronted by desert nomads or dune raiders closing on horseback, the avatar slams the brass head to the parched earth to release the Shanyrak Smoke Screen; a dense cloud of fragrant, choking juniper and wormwood smoke expands 15 feet outward, blinding the attackers and causing their mounts to panic while the avatar and companions strike with clear vision.
      • If surrounded by dry scrub brush, the avatar whips the censer forward with Gale-Whip Ember Arc, unleashing a localized fire-gust that ignites the dry brush around the enemies’ perimeter, cutting off their escape and forcing them to drop weapons to extinguish burning gear.
  • Subterranean Mine Adits, Dried Qanats, and Deep Caverns:
    • Environmental Context: Narrow subterranean tunnels, ancient irrigation aqueducts, and deep earthen shafts where stagnant air, toxic blackdamp, combustible mine gases, and pitch darkness threaten life.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Deep underground, the avatar relies on Elemental Current Divination to sense pockets of toxic swamp gas, explosive vapor, or subterranean water leaks before miners or party members breach the wall.
      • In pitch-black tunnels filled with damp or foul air, the censer functions as a self-contained lantern and air-scrubber; Smolder-Step Veil prevents the wielder from succumbing to dust and smoke inhalation while the yurt-shaped vessel sheds steady orange illumination.
      • When subterranean monstrosities or burrowing vermin strike from narrow crevices, Hearth-Tithe Conflagration Ward creates a sudden backdraft in the cramped tunnel, scorching the creatures and deflecting claws away from the avatar.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Facing tunnel ambushes where retreat is impossible, the avatar deploys the Shanyrak Smoke Screen to choke off the passage ahead; because the smoke is driven by elemental spirits rather than mere fuel, it drives toxic creatures out of their nesting holes while the party advances unharmed.
      • In close-quarters tunnel brawls, the avatar sweeps the juniper haft and bronze chain around rock outcroppings to hook shields or strike around corners, smashing the burning censer into enemy ranks with crushing impact and searing charcoal burns.
  • Crowded Caravanserai Courtyards, Bazaars, and Border Forts:
    • Environmental Context: Cramped outdoor market squares, packed stables, adobe perimeter walls, and wooden trading posts where weapon fire risks starting uncontrolled structure blazes or stampeding pack animals.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Amidst volatile marketplace standoffs or street riots, the avatar uses the sweet, herbal aroma of smoldering wormwood and sweetgrass to soothe skittish camels and draft horses, preventing a stampede through crowded stalls.
      • If thrown bottles, crossbow bolts, or spears target the avatar during an ambush, Hearth-Tithe Conflagration Ward interposes a flash of thermal air that deflects the incoming projectile, with the resulting backdraft searing the attacker without igniting surrounding canvas tents.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • To disperse hostile rioters or subdue debt enforcers without killing bystanders, the avatar deploys Shanyrak Smoke Screen, flooding the street with an opaque, tear-inducing juniper haze that forces hostile combatants to drop to their knees coughing while companions slip away.
      • In disciplined melee skirmishes against heavy armor, the avatar utilizes the flexible bronze chain of the flail to wrap around enemy spears or swords, jerking weapons from their hands while slamming the glowing brass yurt into the opponent’s helm, blinding them with hot soot and concussive force.

    • Observers notice a dry, powdery mineral taste on their lips, followed by the faint sweetness of smoldering sweetgrass.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Spirit Presence: Individuals sensitive to unseen energies register the immediate awakening of ancestral hearth spirits (Ot-Ana) and steppe winds (Zhel-Ata), feeling as though they have stepped into the protective threshold of an ancient, consecrated nomad lodge.
    • Threat Repulsion: Hostile entities experience a sudden, instinctive dread of the burning vessel, sensing the ancient hospitality laws embedded in its flame.

Positives

  • Climate Immunity:
    • The passive thermal ward shields the avatar and allies from natural hypothermia and desert heat, allowing unhindered movement through extreme climates (-20°C to 45°C).
  • Superior Obscurement Control:
    • The yurt smoke screen creates instant total concealment from enemies while remaining completely transparent to the user and companions.
  • Early Hazard Detection:
    • Elemental current divination provides up to a mile of advance warning against avalanches, dust storms, prairie fires, flash floods, and hidden elemental creatures.
  • Persistent Tactical Pressure:
    • Offensive arcs combine bludgeoning force, kinetic knockback, and lingering fire damage that forces adversaries to spend actions extinguishing burning gear.
  • Unimpeded Movement in Hazards:
    • The user ignores all vision, coughing, and movement penalties caused by environmental smoke, sand, ash, or snowdrifts.

Negatives

  • High Visibility and Scent Trail:
    • The dense clouds of blue-grey smoke, glowing embers, and pungent herbal aroma make covert infiltration, stealth, or scent-masking impossible while active.
  • Continuous Consumable Dependency:
    • The censer relies on a steady supply of dry wormwood, mountain juniper, sweetgrass, and quality charcoal; if starved of smoldering fuel, its active magical properties become dormant.
  • Restricted Use in Confined Combustible Spaces:
    • Swinging a flail venting live embers and hot coals carries a significant risk of starting accidental structure fires inside dry timber buildings, grain silos, or scroll vaults.
  • Wind Vulnerability in Extreme Gales:
    • While the flail commands minor wind gusts, unnatural or gale-force headwinds of hurricane strength can push the smoke screen back across allies or scatter embers unpredictably.

Recipe: The Steppe Baksy’s Hearth-Censer Flail

Materials Needed

  • Haft and Grip:
    • One straight, fire-hardened limb of slow-grown mountain juniper, twenty-eight inches long and two inches in diameter, cured over hearth smoke.
    • Three yards of vegetable-tanned goat rawhide cord and one strip of boiled wool felt for the grip wrap and wrist lanyard.
  • Censer Head and Chain Assembly:
    • Two pounds of clean red brass alloy (copper-zinc mix with trace tin) for casting the yurt-shaped thurible head.
    • Seven hand-forged bronze chain links and two heavy bronze swivels, tested to bear over 200 pounds of swinging tension without deforming.
    • One perforated iron charcoal grate to rest inside the censer bowl.
  • Magical Catalyst:
    • One coin-sized, coin-weighted Tier 1 carnelian-fire crystal, translucent orange-red with natural fiery inclusions, harvested from a sun-baked volcanic scree.
  • Sacrificial Component:
    • A handful of ash and glowing embers taken from an unbroken clan hearth that has burned continuously through at least three winters without being extinguished.
  • Indicators and Resonators:
    • Four small, tuned bronze wind-chimes (cup or tube form).
    • Four strips of consecrated raw silk ribbon (eighteen inches long each) dyed in ritual cardinal colors: red (fire), blue (sky/water), white (wind), and yellow (earth).
  • Fuel and Consecration Consumables:
    • Dried bitter wormwood (yowshan), mountain sweetgrass, dried wild juniper berries, and hard birchwood lump charcoal.
    • Rendered sheep tallow and mineral pitch for sealing the crystal bezel.

Tools Required

  • Small charcoal furnace and graphite crucible for melting brass.
  • Clay and sand two-part casting flask modeled after a miniature steppe yurt with a domed shanyrak roof vent.
  • Chasing chisels, jewelers’ piercing saws, and fine needle files for opening the smoke perforations.
  • Blacksmith’s anvil, tongs, and light cross-peen forging hammer for joining chain links.
  • Wood rasp, drawknife, and bone scraper for shaping the juniper haft.
  • Bronze brazier and copper tweezers for the ember-transfer rite.

Skill Requirements

  • Metalsmithing & Casting: Level 3 or higher. Necessary to cast thin-walled perforated brass, braze the yurt roof hinge, and forge reliable load-bearing bronze chain links.
  • Elemental Shamanic Rites (Baksy of the Hearth): Level 1 or higher. Required to invoke the four elemental Iye (particularly Ot-Ana and Zhel-Ata), bind the continuous hearth embers, and awaken the carnelian catalyst.
  • Woodworking & Leathercraft: Level 2 or higher. Needed to properly turn, char, and rawhide-wrap the juniper haft to withstand concussive impact without splitting.

Crafting Steps

  • Step 1: Carving and Charring the Haft:
    • Shave the mountain juniper limb to a twenty-eight-inch tapered cylindrical haft, leaving a bulbous pommel at the base and a reinforced shoulder collar at the head.
    • Pass the bare wood slowly through an open hardwood flame until the exterior millimeter is evenly blackened and carbonized, case-hardening the wood against moisture and rot.
    • Wrap the lower half of the haft in boiled wool felt, securing it with spiral-wound goat rawhide cord under heavy tension, terminating in a reinforced wrist loop.
  • Step 2: Casting and Piercing the Yurt-Censer:
    • Melt the red brass alloy in the crucible and pour it into the yurt-shaped sand mold, casting the lower hemispherical bowl and upper domed cupola.
    • Fit a small bronze pin-hinge and latch to join the two halves, allowing the censer to open for fuel replenishment.
    • Using jewelers’ saws and fine piercing files, cut radial smoke slits along the dome walls and pierce the circular shanyrak ring at the apex to ensure smooth chimney ventilation.
    • Fit the perforated iron grate into the base of the bowl to elevate smoldering charcoal above the intake vents.
  • Step 3: Chain Forging and Collar Mounting:
    • Forge seven thick bronze oval links and weld them together, connecting one end to the top swivel of the yurt dome and the other to an eye-bolt collar anchored into the head of the juniper haft.
    • Heat-shrink a secondary bronze collar around the juniper head to prevent the wood from splitting under heavy centrifugal impact.
  • Step 4: Setting the Carnelian Catalyst:
    • Mount a raised bronze bezel directly beneath the chain collar on the wooden haft.
    • Dust the interior socket with dry pulverized juniper pitch and bed the Tier 1 carnelian crystal firmly into place.
    • Crimp the bronze bezel tabs over the crystal’s perimeter, ensuring direct mechanical contact between the gemstone, the collar, and the wood grain.
  • Step 5: Attaching Wind Indicators and Chimes:
    • Fasten four small bronze wind-chimes to secondary suspension rings drilled around the bronze head collar.
    • Tie the red, blue, white, and yellow silk ribbons beside each chime, knotting them with sinew so they stream horizontally in the slightest draft.
  • Step 6: The Hearth-Binding Vigil and Consecration:
    • Fill the perforated grate with hot birch charcoal and smoldering dried wormwood, sweetgrass, and crushed juniper berries.
    • Place the sacrificial ember from the unbroken three-winter clan hearth into the censer while chanting the traditional baksy hospitality invocations to Ot-Ana.
    • Swing the censer continuously in wide arcs through the night, drawing down the dawn winds (Zhel-Ata) until the carnelian crystal flares with a steady internal orange light, the chimes ring with a self-sustained harmonic flutter, and fragrant blue-orange smoke pours uninterrupted from the shanyrak cupola.

Four White Horns, Great Freeze of Moon-Mare, and Walking Stove of Seven Wandering Gates

In the ancient season when the stars had not yet been gathered into their leather baskets by the Great Herder, the world was flat like a tallow-cake left upon an iron dish. In those days, men had no chimneys in their wool-houses, nor did they know the name of the yellow earth-resin that burns like dry fat. The wind called Zhel-Ata had no legs, but crawled across the gravel upon eighty belly-fins, blowing neither east nor west, but round and round like water boiling in an unskimmed bronze kettle. Because there was no covenant between the iron-skillet and the gale, when a herdsman struck two grey river-pebbles to roast his marmot, the wind would drop out of the empty sky like an owl with wet wings and swallow the spark into its black throat. Then the people sat upon the dung-heaps, gnawing the raw marrow of sheep-shanks until their front teeth broke off short like chalk.

Now there ruled beyond the frozen gravel-terraces a great bone-headed beast whose mark in the baked brick-writing is set down as the Bull-With-The-Glaze-Beard, but whom the reed-cutters called The Unfed Uncle. He was sixty spans in the brisket, and his breath was not warm like the nose of a mare, but came out of his jaw in long blue icicles that pinned the mountain foxes to the rocks. This frost-king looked down from the white horn of the mountain and said unto his seven howling sons: “Why do these two-legged worms bake their barley upon the warm dung? The dung is mine, and the barley is mine, and the warm breath inside their ribs is a stolen sheep-bell. Let us sit upon their felt roofs until the smoke inside freezes into black stones, and their grandchildren become white statues for the mountain wolves to lick.”

And so the frost-king blew through the roof-holes (shanyraks) of forty camps. The kettles froze upon the hearth-stones; the broth became grey glass; the fat mares in the paddocks stood upon four stiff legs until they tipped sideways into the drifts like felled birch-logs. The women had no dry wood, for the snow was three horse-lengths deep, and the little children wept until the water of their eyes ran down their shirts and turned to sharp blue pins.

Then from the high screes of the burning mountain where the red stones sweat sulfur came an old herdsman of the spirits whose name is scratched upon the pot-shards as Karash-the-Ash-Eater. He was lean like a three-year-old wolf that hath lived upon dry pine-needles, and his coat was made of charred sheep-felt sewn together with wild boar-sinew. He possessed neither four hundred sheep nor a bronze bowl, but he held in his right fist a stick of burnt mountain juniper, twenty-and-eight inches from root to crown, tied with rawhide strips and wrapped with boiled wool so that his fingers would not stick to the iron cold.

From the top of this stick hung seven links of yellow bronze, and upon the links swung a brass pot shaped like the little wool-houses of the steppe, with a round chimney at the top and four pierced windows through which the fire-eye looked out. Inside this brass pot burned neither camel-turf nor tallow, but an unbroken ember taken from the belly of Ot-Ana, the First Hearth-Mother, which had been fed with dry mountain sage, wild sweetgrass, and red carnelian dust from the broken hills. About its bronze throat hung four small bells of copper that went ting-tang-clink, and four long strips of silk—red like arterial blood, blue like the high lake, white like mare’s milk, and yellow like the steppe dust—that stood straight out in the gale like the ears of an angry stallion.

The people saw Karash coming down through the five-fathom snowdrifts, and they were sore afraid, crying from their frozen mud-holes: “What is this beggar who brings a copper kettle on a chain? Will he swing a fire-pot against the Bull of the Glaze-Beard? The frost will spit upon his little embers, and his bones will be as white as the sheep-ribs before the second cock-crow!”

Karash did not answer the grunters of the ditch. He walked to the center of the winter encampment, where the sacred hearth-fire had turned into a block of black river-ice, and he swung the brass house three times around his head—whirr-whurr-khrrr!

Behold, the bronze wind-bells began to sing like four hundred larks rising out of the spring wheat! The round red stone at the neck of the stick flared like a mountain beacon when the border-watch is broken! Out of the four windows of the brass yurt poured not bitter soot, but a thick, blue-orange cloud that smelled of wild wormwood, hot juniper resin, and the sweet grease of forty sacrificial fat-tailed sheep!

The great wind Zhel-Ata smelled the mountain sage and was ashamed. It ceased its howling and came down from the clouds like a great grey hunting-dog that hath been whistled to heel. It blew into the brass chimney of the censer, and the censer blew back into the wind; and lo, the breath that came forth was not ice, but a soft, fragrant warmth like the belly of a nursing ewe! The three-horse snowdrifts melted into sweet running water; the stiff mares in the pens opened their nostrils and began to graze the green winter-grass that leaped up through the black mud; and the children took the frozen tears from their cheeks and threw them into the puddle, for their blood had become hot and red once more.

Then the Bull-With-The-Glaze-Beard was wroth. He gathered his seven frost-sons and came down the mountain with a noise like forty frozen lakes breaking in the spring melt. “Who hath lit an oven in my cellar?” he bellowed through his blue beard. “I will trample this copper toy into the gravel and make of the old singer a post for my harness-ropes!”

The frost-king charged, his two horns of blue glacier-ice pointing straight at the herdsman’s brisket. The air around him was so cold that the birds flying above fell down into the snow like thrown river-stones.

Karash did not run, nor did he drop his juniper stick. He stepped with his right foot upon a rock, whirled the smoking yurt-flail in a tight circle of eight, and cracked the bronze chain against the air—ts-khang!

A great tongue of white-hot charcoal and compressed air leaped from the perforated brass yurt like a spear of burning grease! It struck the Bull-With-The-Glaze-Beard full between his two cold eyes. The ice upon his forehead shattered into four thousand drops of boiling rain; his beard melted into foul steam that smelled of rotten marsh-roots; and his seven sons were blown thirty leagues back into the northern mountains by the gale of hot wormwood smoke, falling upon the sharp crags until their ribs cracked like dry winter twigs.

The Bull fell upon his knees in the mud. He tried to speak his bitter cold into the grass, but Karash tapped the yurt-head against the ground, and a great dome of fragrant juniper smoke enclosed the monster. Because his marrow had known only the cruelty of the unshaded ice, the holy warmth of the hearth-mother burned his throat like melted lead. His horns softened like warm beeswax, and he shrank into a small, bald grey calf that could do nothing save lick the herdsman’s rawhide boots and bleat for sour milk.

Then Karash-the-Ash-Eater set the small brass yurt down upon the middle hearth of the clan, and he said unto the people of the seven gates: “Keep ye the coals within this bronze yurt alive with birch-charcoal and bitter sage. Build no stone walls against the wind, for the wind is an unruly guest that must be welcomed with the bell and the ribbon; and throw never cold water upon the hearth-fire, lest the Bull of the Glaze-Beard find his horns again in the dark.”

The old man went back into the mountain screes, leaving the flail behind him; and though the snow fell upon the high peaks for a hundred winters, the people of the river-clans sat within their felt houses in their thin linen shirts, warm and well-fed, swinging the brass yurt whenever the northern sky turned blue with frost.

Moral: The brute ice of the wilderness may crush the unshielded traveler and freeze the spring-broth in the kettle; but he who carries the sacred hearth in his hand and honors the spirits of fire and wind with hospitality and fragrant herbs shall never be conquered by the winter, for the smallest ember of the hearth-mother is mightier than forty leagues of frost.

      • The wielder adds +1 bonus die to Survival (Wil) and Awareness (Int) tests when navigating severe weather, detecting sandstorms, or tracking warp-born elemental currents. The wielder and allies within 3 meters suffer no penalties from sub-zero cold (-20°C) or blistering desert heat (45°C), and ignore visibility penalties within smoke plumes.
    • Gale-Whip Ember Arc:
      • As a combat action, the wielder lashes the yurt-censer toward a foe within 5 meters.
      • Make a Weapon Skill (Ini) or Willpower Test against the target’s Defense.
      • On a hit, the target suffers 4 + 1ED Fire damage, is pushed 2 meters backward, and suffers the On Fire condition.
    • Shanyrak Smoke Screen:
      • Once per scene as a combat action, the bearer slams the censer to the turf to generate a 6-meter-radius blast of thick, pungent juniper smoke.
      • The zone is completely obscured (+2 Difficulty to all visual and ranged tests targeting creatures inside). The wielder and designated allies treat the smoke as completely transparent.
    • Hearth-Tithe Conflagration Ward:
      • As an interrupt action when an enemy within 2 meters targets the wielder with a melee strike, the bearer whips the flail across the incoming blow.
      • The wielder gains +2 Resilience against the triggering attack. If the attack misses, the attacker suffers 1d3 Mortal Wounds from the explosive thermal backdraft.
