Lore:
- Originating among nomadic foothill clans traversing the seismically active fault valleys of northern Natufian and the Kurgan crags, this heavy ritual pestle was conceived to appease subterranean rock-spirits rather than oppose them.
- In regions where frequent ground tremors shatter stone dwellings and swallow livestock into sudden fissures, tribal baksy and shamans developed grounding rituals using river-tumbled basalt to absorb seismic wrath.
- Carved from mineral-dense volcanic rock and bound with copper wire, the implement serves dual purposes: by day it is used to grind medicinal roots and ritual healing powders in the communal hearth, and by night it is thrust into the soil to channel earth vibrations away from the clan’s tents.
- Shamans learned to bind an uncut Tier 1 magic crystal into the shaft, allowing a wandering avatar to commune with deep subterranean spirits, divine impending fault-shifts, and unleash concussive seismic ripples to topple charging adversaries.
Description:
- The item is a heavy, eighteen-inch ritual grinding pestle and war-cudgel carved from a single piece of dark, pitted basalt stone, exhibiting deep charcoal tones flecked with raw iron grains.
- The upper handle is wrapped in braided split-ox leather that has been rubbed with mutton tallow and powdered volcanic ash, cross-bound with hammered copper wire coils that ground electrical and spiritual charges.
- Embedded securely into the flat crown of the pommel is a coin-sized, coin-weighted Tier 1 magic crystal that pulses with a rhythmic, ember-orange subterranean glow whenever it makes contact with soil or bedrock.
- The broad striking head is incised with archaic geometric fault-line glyphs filled with ground red clay; when struck firmly against the earth, fine hairline cracks temporarily ignite along the inscriptions, venting a faint trace of sulfurous warmth.
- It is carried via a reinforced rawhide shoulder sling, hanging comfortably at the avatar’s hip or back when not in use.

- Attack Damage: 1d6 bludgeoning + 1d4 Tier 1 attack die
- Range Trait: Simple (5 feet in melee; not balanced for throwing)
- Attunement Requirement: Held attunement (attunes instantaneously when gripped by an avatar standing firmly upon natural ground, stone, or packed earth)
- Armor Check Value: 1 (derived from grounding stance and parrying mass; within the limit of 3 AC per item level)
- Suggested Market Value: 40 Silver coins or 80 Nickel pieces (governed by local mineral scarcity, healer guild demands, and frontier trading margins)
Multiple Passives Magic:
- Fault-Sense Divination: While holding the pestle firmly against the ground or carrying it attuned, the avatar’s Mind’s Eye passively detects seismic anomalies, tunnel collapses, subterranean creature movements, and structural faults within 60 feet, providing intuitive forewarning of natural or induced cave-ins.
- Rooted Hearth Stance: While the avatar stands with both feet planted on solid stone or natural earth, the ancestral mountain spirits anchor their mass. The avatar gains immense stability against external force, granting advantage on rolls or checks made to resist being tripped, shoved, bull-rushed, or knocked prone.
- Medicinal Mineralization: Any medicinal steppe herbs, dried roots, or mineral salts ground into paste using the basalt head gain enhanced potency, purifying water contaminants and granting an additional +1 point of biological healing when applied to treated wounds.
Multiple Activable Magics:
- Subterranean Shockwave: As a combat action, the avatar slams the heavy basalt base into the ground while shouting an ancestral earth chant. A localized seismic ripple tears through the soil in a 15-foot cone. Creatures standing on the ground within the area must make an immediate saving throw (DC 11). On a failed save, a target takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone; on a successful save, the target takes half damage and remains upright.
- Tectonic Tremor Smite: When the avatar hits an enemy with a melee strike, they can channel the Tier 1 crystal to discharge an internal concussive vibration directly into the target’s skeleton. The attack inflicts base cudgel damage (1d6 bludgeoning + 1d4 Tier 1 die), and the target must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution or Fortitude save or suffer the Staggered condition, reducing its movement speed by half until the end of its next turn.
- Tremor Grounding Ward: As a prepared reaction when a physical shockwave, falling boulder, or earth-based kinetic attack strikes within 10 feet of the avatar, the user jams the pestle into the floor. The copper coils and basalt channel the kinetic energy safely down into the bedrock, granting a +2 bonus to Armor Check and damage resistance against the triggering impact for the avatar and adjacent allies.

- Foothill Apothecaries, Herbalist Tents, and Clan Healer Lodges:
- Description: Situated along the sloping bases of fault-line valleys, volcanic mineral hot springs, and rugged pastoral hill-camps. These establishments operate inside smoke-darkened wool pavilions or half-timbered stone huts packed with drying wild steppe herbs, clay jars of sulfurous mineral mud, dried roots, and bundles of bitter scrub sage. The air is thick with the pungent aroma of medicinal pastes, boiling bark infusions, and smoldering dried tallow torches.
- How it is Bought and Sold: Healers and local baksy value the implement primarily as a dual-purpose mortar pestle and spirit ward. Prospective buyers test the balance by grinding coarse rock salt against an unpolished slate slab, feeling the resonant vibration of the basalt and confirming that the coin-sized Tier 1 crystal glows with a warm, steady amber light when set against the flagstones. When an avatar sells the pestle here, the herbalist carefully examines the striking face for deep oil saturation, ensures the red clay glyphs have not been washed away by caustic alchemy, and verifies that the copper wire windings remain unbroken to channel healing and grounding currents.
- Cost:
- Purchase Price: 38 to 48 Silver coins, or 76 to 96 Nickel pieces.
- Sell Offer: 34 to 36 Silver coins, often traded for jars of refined healing unguents, sealed packages of clean field rations, or unworked raw herbs.
- Mining Outpost Provisioners and Quarry Toolsmiths:
- Description: Located at the mouth of deep subterranean excavation shafts, marble quarries, and basalt pits within rough highland settlements. These stores are utilitarian timber-and-iron sheds surrounded by stacks of iron picks, wooden shoring beams, heavy canvas ore sacks, and steam-driven rock drills venting oily steam. The environment is dusty, loud with the percussive thud of stone hammers, and smells of pulverized granite, coal soot, and machine grease.
- How it is Bought and Sold: Deep miners and tunnel supervisors view the pestle as an indispensable safety tool and emergency excavation breaker. A buyer examines the tool by tapping the flat base against the bedrock floor, checking the Mind’s Eye feedback to ensure the fault-sensing divination registers active subterranean stress fractures. When an avatar sells the implement to a quarry master, the proprietor inspects the basalt stem for hairline stress cracks caused by massive blunt impacts and verifies that the Tier 1 pommel crystal is not loosened. Transactions are often backed by mineral weight or guild vouchers redeemable at the regional World Bank station.
- Cost:
- Purchase Price: 42 to 52 Silver coins, or roughly 4 to 5 Gold coins.
- Sell Offer: 36 Silver coins, paid in weighed copper ore ingots, refined silver trade bars, or blasting powder canisters.
- Municipal Mason Guilds and Architectural Workshops:
- Description: Found within the stone-paved artisan quarters of major walled island cities, these multi-room masonry houses feature drafting tables covered in structural blueprints, scale models of aqueducts, and stacks of cut ashlar blocks. The atmosphere is orderly and professional, filled with the chalky scent of slaked lime mortar, damp limestone dust, and the rhythmic clicking of stone-carver mallets.
- How it is Bought and Sold: Guild engineers and stone-shapers purchase these implements to test foundation density, calibrate defensive curtain walls against seismic tremors, and pacify localized earth-elemental disturbances beneath heavy structures. The buyer verifies that the copper wiring adheres to municipal standards and tests the stability stance on a paved flagstone test-pad. If an avatar sells the pestle to the guild, a master mason logs the item into the guild register, cross-referencing its maker’s mark and ensuring it has not been de-attuned or damaged in unregulated skirmishes. Avatars carrying official guild or civic credentials receive an automatic 10% discount on purchases.
- Cost:
- Purchase Price (Standard Adventurer): 46 to 56 Silver coins.
- Purchase Price (Recognized Guild Member): 41 to 50 Silver coins.
- Sell Offer: 36 Silver coins, transferred directly to the seller’s verified World Bank ledger.
- Under-Bazaar Relic Dens and Smuggler Excavation Fences:
- Description: Tucked away in subterranean crypt vaults, abandoned sewer conduits, or hidden cellar corners beneath bustling border ports. Lit by flickering animal-fat tallow lamps, these damp, low-ceilinged dens reek of stale canal bilge, damp earth, and sulfur. Illicit excavators, tomb-looters, and deserters stack unlabeled crates of ancient relics, stripped temple stones, and unregistered occult implements across rough wooden planks resting on beer casks.
- How it is Bought and Sold: Brokers in these clandestine markets deal exclusively in hard coin, refusing bank drafts, paper paper scrip, or municipal paper trails. They value the pestle for its silent utility in bringing down security walls, triggering localized subterranean collapses, or bypassing subterranean vault wards. Buyers pay in cash with no questions asked about previous ownership or unrecorded blood stains on the leather grip. When an avatar sells the weapon here, the fence attempts to dismiss it as a crude native hammer unless the avatar demonstrates the tectonic tremor discharge, settling payment immediately in untraceable silver pieces.
- Cost:
- Purchase Price: 55 to 70 Silver coins, or 6 to 7 Gold coins in loose coin.
- Sell Offer: 32 to 36 Silver coins in hard, unrecorded precious metal.
Tactical Applications and Environmental Roleplay of the Tectonic Hearth-Stirrer
- Subterranean Caverns, Deep Mine Shafts, and Excavated Crypts:
- Environmental Context: Unstable underground shafts carved through limestone, schist, or shale, where loose ceiling rocks, narrow mine timbering, and sudden drop-offs present equal danger to friend and foe alike.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- As tremors ripple through a fracturing drift, the avatar holds the pestle’s basalt foot firmly against the rock floor, using Fault-Sense Divination to read hairline shifts in the overhead stone long before timber supports begin to split.
- When falling stalactites or ceiling debris threaten the party during a collapse, the user activates the Tremor Grounding Ward, driving the pestle into the floor to disperse the seismic kinetic force into the bedrock, shielding adjacent allies from crushing impact trauma.
- In tight tunnels against charging cavern beasts, the Rooted Hearth Stance prevents the avatar from being shoved back into deep chasms or pinned beneath heavy burrowing predators.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- In close-quarters tunnel fighting, the avatar uses the Tectonic Tremor Smite, slamming the heavy basalt head into the knee or sternum of an armored subterranean guardian to send concussive vibrations through its skeleton, leaving it staggered and struggling for breath in the cramped space.
- To halt an advancing patrol, the avatar slams the pestle against a structural fault identified by their divination, using the Subterranean Shockwave to buckle the tunnel floor, toppling enemies into jagged rubble while keeping the ceiling secure.
- Rocky Mountain Ridges, Scree Slopes, and High Fault-Line Passes:
- Environmental Context: Exposed alpine crags, sliding scree fields, narrow goat paths along shear precipices, and jagged basalt outcroppings subject to sudden rockslides and buffeting mountain winds.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- When moving along narrow cliff edges, the avatar plants the cudgel between strides; the Rooted Hearth Stance binds the avatar’s mass to the mountain, completely negating the risk of being knocked off balance by howling crosswinds or charging mountain beasts.
- If a hillside boulder is dislodged by enemy skirmishers above, the avatar initiates the Tremor Grounding Ward to anchor themselves against the downhill kinetic wave, absorbing the shock against the reinforced basalt stem.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Facing enemies advancing up a loose gravel grade, the avatar strikes the base into the slope to trigger a Subterranean Shockwave. The seismic ripple dislodges the scree beneath the attackers’ feet, sending them tumbling backward down the slope and leaving them prone for counterattacks.
- Engaging mountain raiders in hand-to-hand combat, the avatar uses the weight of the cudgel to crush shields, driving the Tectonic Tremor Smite through iron bosses to rattle the bones of enemy shield-bearers and sap their footing.
- Broad Steppes, Loam River Basins, and Grassy Scrublands:
- Environmental Context: Expansive grasslands, deep river loams, and dry alluvial plains where mounted raiders utilize speed, cavalry lances, and flanking mobility.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Caught in open scrub against mounted horsemen, the avatar anchors both feet in the turf. The Rooted Hearth Stance prevents the avatar from being trampled or bowled over by charging warhorses, allowing them to brace and parry lance tips with the basalt shaft.
- When a pack of plains predators attempts to swarm and trip the avatar, the wielder keeps low, parrying bite attempts with the heavy stone flats while their center of gravity remains immovably tied to the soil.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- As enemy cavalry lines close within fifteen feet, the avatar slams the Tectonic Hearth-Stirrer down with a guttural shamanic shout, discharging a Subterranean Shockwave through the turf. The sudden ground heave causes mounts to stumble, throwing riders from their saddles onto the hard ground.
- Closing on fallen or disordered combatants, the avatar executes swift, downward bludgeoning strikes, using the concentrated mass of the volcanic stone to crack boiled leather cuirasses and shatter limb bones.
- Paved City Plazas, Masonry Fortresses, and Stone Dungeons:
- Environmental Context: Formal urban settings dominated by fitted ashlar flagstones, thick stone curtain walls, granite colonnades, and fortified masonry ramparts.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While defending a breached portcullis or stone corridor, the avatar uses the pestle to brace the defensive line, relying on Rooted Hearth Stance to halt enemy battering rams, shield walls, or pushing polearms without giving an inch of ground.
- When an enemy war-machine or explosive concussive shell detonates against the courtyard flagstones, the user triggers the Tremor Grounding Ward, drawing the surface-wave shock down into the deep city foundations through the copper winding before it can crack the walls or rupture internal organs.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Advancing across a slick, polished marble floor or stone bridge, the avatar uses Fault-Sense Divination to identify weak mortar joints beneath the enemy front ranks, then strikes the floor to unleash a Subterranean Shockwave that cracks the paving stones, sending defenders sprawling on uneven slabs.
- In direct hand-to-hand combat against heavy plated city guards, the avatar bypasses heavy plate armor with the Tectonic Tremor Smite, channeling vibrational shockwaves directly through breastplates into ribcages and lungs to stagger elite defenders.

- The Rooted Hearth Stance renders the user nearly impossible to push, shove, trample, or knock down, turning the avatar into an unmovable bulwark in doorways, narrow mine drifts, or shield lines.
- Reliable Early Warning:
- Fault-Sense Divination provides constant passive awareness of tunnel collapses, structural compromises, and burrowing creatures, completely neutralizing sudden subterranean ambushes or cave-in hazards.
- Dual Martial and Healing Utility:
- Functions effectively as a heavy, armor-denting bludgeon while simultaneously acting as a sanctified mortar pestle that purifies water and enhances the healing potency of medicinal steppe herbs.
Negatives
- Ground Dependence:
- The item’s passive rooting, active shockwaves, and grounding wards require direct contact with natural stone, bedrock, or packed soil; suspended wooden bridges, rope ladders, and ship decks severely diminish its magical efficacy.
- Collateral Structural Risk:
- Discharging seismic shockwaves in unstable ruins, aged masonry corridors, or fractured mines can inadvertently trigger ceiling collapses, dropping loose debris on both allies and enemies.
- Audible Concussive Signature:
- The loud subterranean boom, cracking rock, and singing copper coils make silent operation impossible once an active seismic ability is triggered.
- Severe Mount Agitation:
- The infrasonic rumblings and pungent sulfur smell terrify domestic riding animals, draft horses, and guard hounds, making mounted combat or animal handling extremely difficult in the wielder’s immediate presence.
Recipe: The Hearth-Stirrer of the Deep Earth
Materials Needed
- Core Mineral Shaft:
- A single, unblemished cylinder of dense, fine-grained volcanic basalt measuring roughly twenty inches in length and four inches in diameter, free of internal shear lines or gas bubbles.
- Magical Catalyst:
- One intact, coin-sized and coin-weighted Tier 1 magic crystal harvested from a subterranean geode bed or fault-line vent, resonant with ember-orange earth-elemental energy.
- Sacrificial Component:
- One heavy miner’s iron sledge or an alchemist’s solid stone mortar that previously held minor structural, kinetic-impact, or mineral-crushing enchantments. This implement is shattered and calcined during the grounding ritual to impart its crushing resilience and harmonic mass into the basalt pestle.
- Conductive & Binding Elements:
- Six feet of annealed, raw copper wire (roughly 12-gauge), hand-hammered to remove metallurgical impurities and maximize spiritual grounding.
- Three fluid drams of rendered mutton tallow blended with volcanic sulfur powder and pulverized pine pitch, measured via a fluid collector to serve as an arcane bonding agent and weatherproofing seal.
- Grip & Pigment Supplies:
- One strip of thick, brain-tanned ox hide, two inches wide and forty inches long.
- Two ounces of powdered ferruginous red clay gathered from a dry riverbed or tectonic fault fissure.
- One reinforced rawhide carrying strap fitted with carved horn toggles.
Tools Required
- Hardened stone-mason chisels (point and flat gouges), a heavy wooden mallet, and carborundum rubbing stones for carving and profiling the basalt.
- Hand-turned bow drill with a tempered copper bit for reaming the pommel socket.
- Ceramic crucible and charcoal-fired grounding brazier to heat the resin-sulfur blend and calcine the sacrificial tool.
- Small fluid collector syringe for precise resin injection into the pommel cavity.
- Fine bone stylus for tracing and packing fault-line glyphs.
Skill Requirements
- Stonemasonry & Lapidary: Level 3 or higher. The crafter must know how to cut and peck dense volcanic basalt without fracturing the core shaft or creating micro-fissures along the striking face.
- Metallurgical Binding & Coiling: Level 2 or higher. Required to wrap and tension the copper grounding coils symmetrically around the stone handle without kinking or breaking the wire.
- Shamanic Earth Craft (Baksy Rites): Level 1 or higher. Necessary to perform the subterranean communion vigil, anchor the hearth-spirit covenant, and fuse the sacrificial kinetic ash into the Tier 1 crystal bed.
Crafting Steps
- Step 1: Roughing and Shaping the Basalt Core:
- Cleave and dress the basalt cylinder using the point chisel and mallet, establishing an eighteen-inch finished length with a flared, flat four-inch base for grinding and a contoured, ergonomic handle tapering toward the crown.
- Smooth the exterior using rough-grit carborundum rubbing stones, dipping the stone repeatedly in salt water to flush mineral slurry until the basalt exhibits a smooth, satin-charcoal finish.
- Level the circular striking face so it rests perfectly flat against a horizontal surface without wobbling.
- Step 2: Inscribing the Fault Glyphs and Pommel Reaming:
- Using a fine-point chisel, engrave deep, angular fault-line patterns and traditional steppe earth glyphs around the circumference of the lower striking head.
- Mount the tempered copper bit in the bow drill and bore a uniform, cylindrical socket directly into the center of the pommel crown, sized to seat the coin-sized Tier 1 crystal flush with the stone rim.
- Cut fine spiral grooves into the interior walls of the socket to ensure a mechanical anchor for the bonding pitch.
- Step 3: Calcinating the Sacrificial Tool and Packing Glyphs:
- Place the sacrificial sledge or stone mortar into the charcoal brazier. Stoke the coals to cherry-red heat while chanting the baksy invocation of the Deep Roots until the tool becomes brittle and can be pulverized into fine, sparkling kinetic ash with a hand hammer.
- Mix the red clay powder with a small portion of mutton tallow and water to form a dense paste.
- Pack this paste firmly into the chiseled fault runnels on the pestle head with a bone stylus, baking the stone near the brazier until the clay sets rock-hard within the incisions.
- Step 4: Seating the Catalyst and Thermal Grounding:
- Blend the remaining rendered mutton tallow, volcanic sulfur, and pulverized pine pitch with the hot sacrificial mineral ash in the ceramic crucible.
- Draw the bubbling compound into the fluid collector and inject it into the pommel cavity.
- Firmly press the Tier 1 ember crystal into the socket, seating it level with the pommel rim.
- Stand the pestle upright on bare soil and maintain a focused earth-attunement trance for eighteen minutes. As the resin sets, the crystal flares with a steady subterranean amber pulse, signaling that the kinetic and spirit currents are bound to the stone.
- Step 5: Wrapping the Grip and Final Assembly:
- Starting just below the pommel crystal, wrap the annealed copper wire tightly around the handle in tight, rhythmic grounding coils, seating the ends firmly into pre-drilled stone pinholes.
- Wrap the braided strip of ox hide over the copper coils, leaving exposed copper bands at the collar and crown to ground the user’s hand against kinetic blowback.
- Rub warm mutton tallow into the leather wrap to preserve it against moisture and blood.
- Attach the rawhide shoulder sling to the balance point below the hilt, striking the base firmly against the earth three times to verify the resonant subterranean hum of the completed hearth-stirrer.
Great Heavy Pestle-Stone and Seven Angry Breathers of Salt-Rift
In the early turning of the world-egg, when the mountains were yet soft like warm goat-cheese and the salt-valleys had no bottoms to stop the feet of wandering men, there lived upon the red gravel of Natufian an old churner of roots whose name in the mouth was Batyr-Temür, though the crooked bone-scratchers of the sea-tent wrote it down as He-Who-Poundeth-the-Belly-of-the-Hearth. He possessed neither horses with silver tails nor thirty wives with copper bangles, but only an old iron-legged cooking-kettle and a black heavy pestle-club of volcanic stone which his grandfather’s uncle had pulled from the throat of a smoking hill before the smoke became cold sand.
Now in those seasons the soil was not quiet. The earth-mother was ever turning her hips beneath the dirt, tossing the gravel like parched barley upon a winnowing fan. When the tents of the clan were raised at eventide, the ground would suddenly bark like a hungry dog; the four wooden posts would dance into the air, the soup-pot would vomit its fat into the ashes, and the little children would tumble into the yawning mouth-holes of the limestone, screaming like trapped marmots.
The people of the felt tents tore their hair and spoke unto Batyr-Temür: “Behold, the earth-belly hath a bad cough! Our mares will not give down their milk, for the trembling maketh the cream turn sour in their udders. Go thou down unto the smoking fissure where the red stone stinketh of yellow brimstone, and beat the ground with thy grandmother’s wooden ladle until it ceaseth its shaking, or we shall all be swallowed into the black mud before the new moon putteth on her horns!”
Batyr-Temür took not a wooden ladle, for he knew that wood is soft and rotteth when the mountain spiteth fire. He took his black basalt pestle-club, which was eighteen inches of cold iron-flecked rock, and he wound about its middle seven coils of raw red copper wire which he had hammered out upon a flat slate with his own toothless jaws. In the head of the stone he pressed a yellow-orange eye of glass that had fallen from the stars when the sky was broken.
He walked down into the Great Rift of Churning, where the ground was split open like a burst belly-rind, venting steam that smelled of scorched sheep-grease and rotten eggs. There sat the Seven Angry Breathers of the Rift, who are the sons of the ancient underground worm whose name is Erd-Shor. They had no eyes to see the sun, but had forty belly-legs like centipedes and skins made of hard sulfur-crust. They lay upon the hot coals beneath the world, beating their heavy iron tails against the roots of the limestone, laughing with a sound like rolling millstones: “Clack! Rattle! Break! Let the two-pegged fleas upon the skin fall into our broth!”
Batyr-Temür climbed down upon a shelf of slippery basalt. He laid his two shriveled palms upon the stone and called into the hot air with the three words of the deep hearth: “O ye blind diggers who have neither skin nor mothers, why shake ye the milk-pots of the tents? If ye hunger for fat, behold, I have brought the grease of the mountain to fill your craws!”
The first Breather raised his sulfur-head, which was square like an anvil, and hissed: “Thou little dung-beetle! We shake the rock because the world-skin is too tight for our bellies! We shall beat our tails until thy grandmother’s grave-stones tumble into our trench, and we shall drink the blood of thy seven white ewes!”
Then Batyr-Temür grew very wroth. His beard of yellow goat-hair bristled like dry reeds. He did not run up the gravel slope, but planted his two bare feet upon the solid granite floor, spreading his shins like the two posts of a sheep-gate. He held the black pestle aloft with both fists, pointing the orange star-stone straight into the mouth of the sulfur-rift.
“If ye will not take the hearth-peace,” shouted the old churner, “then drink the weight of the mother-mountain down your dry gullets!”
He brought the broad striking-face of the basalt pestle down upon the floor of the rift with the fury of a falling cliff.
A great sound went forth—not the sound of chipped stone, but a hollow, booming thunder like the cracking of the sky-vault in the moon of storms. The copper coils about the handle screamed with a voice like a hundred copper flutes. Behold, the red clay glyphs incised along the stone stem caught fire, blazing with a terrible subterranean flame that did not burn the ox-hide grip.
The ground did not split beneath Batyr-Temür; rather, the shockwave leaped forward across the bedrock in a roaring wave of broken gravel and yellow fire! The kinetic wrath of the pestle struck the first Breather upon his anvil-skull. The sulfur-beast let out a wet cough of grey smoke, his forty belly-legs curling inward like scorched hair, and his heavy tail went limp upon the coals, flattened into a pancake of dry ash.
The other six Breathers roared with fright, for they had never felt the stone strike downward with the weight of the deep continental pillars. They turned their blind snouts toward their deep burrows, scrambling over each other like cockroaches when the firebrand is thrust into the wood-pile.
Batyr-Temür pursued them along the edge of the chasm. He struck the rock a second time, shouting the name of the ancient steppe: “Be still, thou shifting marrow! Be hard, thou shaking bone!”
At the second blow, the localized tremor-wave rolled through the tunnel walls. The roofs of the deep sulfur-holes buckled and fell inward with a mighty crash of granite boulders, sealing the six weeping Breathers forever beneath thirty thousand cubits of cold, packed rubble. The subterranean groaning ceased; the foul steam was sucked down into the stone, and in its place there rose only a thin, sweet smell of roasted thyme and cooling iron.
Then Batyr-Temür turned his steps back toward the high terraces where the clan had pitched their tents. When he arrived, he found that not a single tent-peg had been drawn from the dirt, not a single drop of mare’s milk had spilled from the hanging skins, and the children sat upon the grass eating curd-cakes in peace.
The clan elders came forth with bowls of fermented liquor to bow before the old man, offering him three fat horses and a silver belt of honour. But Batyr-Temür shook his head of grey wool. He laid the heavy pestle down beside the communal cooking-trench, where the women were bruising roots for the evening stew.
“Give me neither horses nor silver,” said the root-churner, “for a man cannot eat a bridle when the cold moon falleth. Keep the stone upon the hearth-ground. When the earth under thy boots beginneth to twitch like an ox-hide in fly-time, take this basalt club and drive its foot into the dirt. But when the ground is quiet, use its broad face to grind the wild bitter roots into healing flour, so that the stone which breaketh the mountains may also mend the bellies of the little ones.”
And so it was done throughout the generations of the tent-dwellers: the great black club sat ever beside the cooking-fire, smelling of sulfur and tallow, feared by the demons of the rift and blessed by the mothers of the hearth.
Moral: The wise builder opposeth not the fury of the earth with brittle iron, but groundeth the wrath of the mountain through the stone of the hearth, that the hand which shameth the trembling world may feed the children in quietness.

- Description and Profile:
- Carved from a dense cylinder of volcanic basalt, this eighteen-inch ritual grinding pestle doubles as a brutal one-handed war cudgel. The grip is bound in oil-cured ox leather reinforced with spiraling coils of hand-hammered copper wire, while an uncut amber crystal sits flush within the flat pommel crown. Inscribed fault-line glyphs filled with red clay run down the basalt head, venting sulfurous warmth whenever seismic force is channeled.
- Base Statistics: 1d6 bludgeoning damage; Simple Melee Weapon, Light.
- Weight: 4 lbs.
- Properties and Passive Traits:
- Fault-Sense Divination: While holding the pestle firmly against natural rock, unworked stone, or soil, your senses pierce the earth. You have tremorsense out to a range of 30 feet, allowing you to detect subterranean creatures, shifting faults, hollow pockets, and impending cave-ins.
- Rooted Hearth Stance: While standing with both feet planted on solid stone, bedrock, or packed earth, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class from defensive grounding. In addition, you have advantage on ability checks and saving throws made to avoid being shoved, tripped, or knocked prone.
- Hearth-Healer’s Grind: Medicinal roots, herbs, and alchemical reagents ground with the basalt head gain extra potency. Any herbal medicine or antitoxin prepared with the pestle restores 1 additional hit point when consumed or applied to treat injuries.
- Active Features and Maneuvers:
- Subterranean Shockwave (1/Short or Long Rest): As an action, you strike the basalt foot of the pestle into the floor, discharging a localized seismic ripple in a 15-foot cone. Each creature touching the ground in that area must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a target takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and is not knocked prone.
- Tectonic Tremor Smite: When you hit a creature with a melee attack using the pestle, you can channel kinetic shock directly into its skeleton. The target takes normal weapon damage and must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw or have its speed reduced by 10 feet until the start of your next turn.
- Tremor Grounding Ward: When you or an ally within 5 feet of you takes bludgeoning, thunder, or falling rubble damage from a ground-based effect, you can use your Reaction to drive the pestle into the ground. The damage taken by the targeted creature is reduced by 1d6 + your Constitution modifier (minimum reduction of 1).
Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
Basalt Pestle of Batyr-Temür Prehistoric Mythos Relic / Subterranean Grounding Focus
- Description and History:
- An eighteen-inch club carved from volcanic basalt, wrapped in tallow-cured rawhide and wound with seven heavy coils of pure copper wire. Embedded in the pommel is a raw chunk of amber that radiates faint heat. Discovered in tectonic fault caverns beneath the Anatolian-Mesopotamian border, the implement is etched with geometric runes dating back to pre-human serpent cults or early chthonian appeasement rites. When slammed against bedrock, it discharges focused infrasonic pressure waves.
- Skill: Fighting (Brawl)
- Damage: 1d6 + half Damage Bonus (Bludgeoning).
- Base Armor / Defensive Value: Grants 1 point of physical armor against melee attacks when actively parrying while braced on solid ground; possesses 12 Hit Points.
- Sanity Cost: 0/1 SAN to witness the unnatural seismic wave crack the earth; 1/1d4 SAN to attune and link motor control to the chthonian mantle.
- Operational Mechanics and Spells:
- Tectonic Divination (Passive):
- Placing the stone head against natural stone or earth allows the user to make a Listen or Spot Hidden check to detect burrowing entities, hollow subterranean vaults, or stress fractures in mine shoring up to 20 yards away.
- Hearth-Medicine Potency (Passive):
- Grinding medicines or antivenoms with this pestle adds a +10% bonus to First Aid or Medicine skill checks when applying the prepared poultice to biological injuries.
- Subterranean Shockwave (Cost: 3 Magic Points):
- The user strikes the pestle against bedrock or packed soil as an attack action.
- All creatures within a 3-yard radius must make a DEX or Dodge check.
- On a failure, targets suffer 1d6 bludgeoning damage and fall prone. On a success, targets take 1d3 damage and remain standing. In unstable ruins, this forces a Luck check to avoid triggering a partial ceiling collapse.
- Tectonic Tremor Smite (Cost: 2 Magic Points):
- Declared upon landing a successful Fighting (Brawl) strike.
- The target must make a CON check. On a failure, internal concussive vibrations reduce the target’s movement rate by half and impose one Penalty Die on physical actions for 1 combat round.
- Grounding Ward (Cost: 2 Magic Points):
- As a defensive reaction against kinetic impact, cave-in debris, or shockwave attacks, the user jams the stone into the bedrock. This absorbs and negates up to 5 points of kinetic or falling damage.
- Malfunction / Seismic Backfire:
- On a Fumble (96–100), the underground shockwave reflects backward. The user takes 1d4 damage, drops the implement, and is knocked prone for 1 round.
- Tectonic Divination (Passive):
Blades in the Dark
The Fault-Stirrer Arcane Demolition Implement / Grounding Club
- Profile:
- Load: 2 Load (worn over the shoulder on a heavy rawhide sling; counts as an equipped heavy bludgeon).
- Quality: Tier I (Standard quality) or Tier II when operating in subterranean sewers, stone vaults, or underground catacombs.
- Description:
- A dense, eighteen-inch club of volcanic basalt bound in copper wire and oiled leather, capped with a flickering amber electroplasmic spark. Originally forged by border miners to pacify rogue hollow tremors and bust structural foundations, the club channels localized kinetic tremors directly into masonry and stone.
- Arcane Actions and Rules:
- Channel the Deep Tremor (Action Rating: Wreck):
- Roll Wreck when using the pestle to shatter foundations, topple stone barriers, or unleash seismic waves.
- Controlled: You strike an architectural stress point to crack open a reinforced masonry wall without triggering an unmanaged ceiling collapse.
- Risky: You slam the pestle into cobblestones to trip an advancing squad of Bluecoats, risking flying rubble and collateral structural failure.
- Desperate: You smash the implement down into an unstable subterranean vault to crush a supernatural horror under falling granite, putting yourself directly beneath the collapsing ceiling.
- Channel the Deep Tremor (Action Rating: Wreck):
- Special Item Functions and Pushes:
- Expending Stress (Stress Cost: 1 to 2 Stress):
- Seismic Shunt: Pay 1 Stress to ignore being knocked off balance, shoved, or thrown from an elevated stone walkway or unstable rubble pile.
- Shattering Concussion: Pay 2 Stress to add +1 Effect to a successful Wreck or Skirmish roll when striking an armored opponent, shattering armor plates or staggering large beasts.
- Tectonic Grounding (Armor Use): Mark 1 point of your Armor load (or pay 2 Stress) to plant the pestle into the floor, using Special Armor strictly against explosive concussion, falling masonry, or environmental shockwaves.
- Fault Divination: Pay 1 Stress to place the stone to the earth and immediately locate hollow escape tunnels, hidden vaults, or structural cave-in hazards within close range.
- Expending Stress (Stress Cost: 1 to 2 Stress):
- Consequences and Complications:
- The concussive boom and sulfurous smell echo down city canals, giving away your crew’s position and alerting local watch patrols.
- The grounding recoil sends kinetic shock into the wielder’s arm, inflicting Level 1 Harm: “Numbed Joints” unless relieved with physical rest.
Knave (2nd Edition)
Basalt Hearth-Stirrer Level 1 Shamanic War-Pestle
- Profile and Inventory:
- Item Slots: 1 Slot (Heavy stone cudgel held in one hand, carried via shoulder sling).

- Attack Profile: 1d6 bludgeoning damage.
- Rules and Operating Mechanics:
- Earth Charges:
- The amber pommel holds 3 Earth Charges.
- It regains 1 charge each morning after being driven into natural bedrock or resting in a hot hearth fire for 1 hour.
- When the final charge is used, roll a d6. On a result of 1, the basalt fractures along an inner fault line, reducing its Quality by 1. If its Quality drops to 0, the pestle shatters.
- Earth Charges:
- Passive and Inscribed Magic:
- Earth Anchor (Passive):
- The wielder has advantage on Strength saves to resist being shoved, tripped, or knocked prone while both feet are planted on stone or natural soil.
- Hearth Apothecary (Passive):

- The wielder slams the basalt base into the floor. A 15-foot cone of seismic shock erupts outward. Creatures in the area must make a Dexterity check versus the user’s casting stat or take 1d6 damage and fall prone.
- Tectonic Smite (1 Charge):
- On a successful melee hit, the wielder discharges kinetic vibrations into the target’s bones. The target takes an extra 1d6 damage and must make a Constitution check or have its movement speed halved for its next turn.
- Tremor Grounding Ward (1 Charge):
- As a reaction to suffering bludgeoning or falling damage from stone, cave-ins, or physical shockwaves, the wielder plants the club into the bedrock, reducing the incoming damage by 1d8 points.
- Earth Anchor (Passive):
Fate (Fate Condensed / Fate Core)
The Basalt Hearth-Stirrer of the Deep Fault Extra / Shamanic Earth Focus
- Aspects:
- Function Aspect: Volcanic Basalt Pestle & War-Cudgel
- Flaw Aspect: Bound to the Subterranean Bedrock
