Shamanic 418 of the Orchard Hearth

Lore:

  • Across the semi-arid steppes, scrubland terraces, and orchard slopes of island nations like Natufian, Amratian, and Ghassulian, wandering shamans maintain deep spiritual pacts with localized nature spirits, ancestor guides, and minor elemental thermal essences.
  • Long before the rise of industrial steam vats and battery-driven dehydration plants, seasonal foraging communities faced severe perishability issues, with windfalls of wild figs, sweet dates, persimmons, and desert apricots rotting in the damp coastal mists or moldering during dark eclipse cycles.
  • Pastoral bone-carvers and orchard elders fashioned shallow ritual drying trays out of sun-hardened tamarisk wood and braided reed wicker, binding a coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into the central grain through ancestral invocation rites.
  • By calling upon small thermal steppe spirits and whispering traditional chant verses to the drying winds, the practitioner creates a warm, spirit-tended microclimate across the woven bed, curing fruits, medicinal herbs, and biological alchemical reagents without scorching their flesh or breaking the sacred laws of pastoral hospitality.

Description:

  • The item appears as a shallow, circular drying basin roughly two feet in diameter, constructed from cross-woven sun-cured steppe reeds and rimmed with a steam-bent border of dark desert tamarisk wood.
  • Interwoven throughout the woven wicker mesh are coarse, horsehair cords dyed pale ochre with root dyes, arranged in geometric spiral patterns that guide ambient warm air across whatever rests within the basin.
  • Set firmly into the central wooden boss is a coin-sized, coin-weighted Tier 1 magic crystal that radiates a soft amber luminescence when held or approached by ancestral spirits.
  • Three braided hemp loop-straps are affixed to the outer tamarisk frame, allowing the basin to be securely bound to the exterior of a travel pack, tied over a pack-beast’s flank, or carried like a light wicker buckler in the avatar’s off-hand.
  • The entire tray emits a sweet, faint fragrance of dried mountain honey, evaporated date syrup, and clean willow smoke.

Detailed Stats:

  • Item Tier: Tier 1
  • Rarity: Common
  • Item Type: Shamanic Utility Focus / Harvesting Tray
  • Resilience: 10
  • Base Item Health Points: 10 (plus the carrying avatar’s maximum HP pool)
  • Attack Damage: 1d4 bludgeoning (when swung as an improvised light buckler) + 1d4 Tier 1 attack die
  • Range Trait: Simple (20 feet) for spirit-channeling active functions
  • Attunement Requirement: Held attunement (attunes instantaneously when grasped by the carrying rim; counts as an equipped worn or held item)
  • Armor Check Value: 1 (acts as a light parrying wicker rim; complies with the limit of 3 AC per item level)
  • Suggested Market Value: 35 Silver coins or 70 Nickel pieces (subject to local market fluctuations, seasonal fruit harvests, and merchant bartering)

Multiple Passives Magic:

  • Hearth-Spirit Desiccation: Any sliced fresh fruits, berries, medicinal roots, or alchemical botanicals placed upon the reed mesh are embraced by a gentle, invisible mantle of dry steppe warmth. The drying process is accelerated fivefold without exposing the produce to insects, mold, or blowing grit, preserving all natural nutritional and restorative properties into non-perishable travel rations.
  • Whisper of the Ripened Bough: While the basin is held or strapped openly to the avatar, their Mind’s Eye passively detects the ripeness, hydration levels, and rot percentage of any living fruit-bearing flora within 30 feet, highlighting unblemished produce with a faint golden outline.

Multiple Activable Magics:

  • Siphon the Sapsucker’s Mist: As an action requiring a spoken somatic prayer to the drying spirits, the bearer targets an area of natural dampness, puddle water, or sodden vegetation within 20 feet. The basin draws up to one gallon of atmospheric moisture or fluid from the target directly into its wicker weave, instantly expelling the water as clean, tasteless vapor and leaving the affected organic matter dry and brittle.
  • Shamanic Sun-Breath Smite: The bearer brandishes the tray toward a target within 20 feet and chants a harsh ritual verse to the parching wind spirits, spending one combat action. The avatar rolls 1d20 + 1d4 (Tier 1 attack die) against the target’s AC. On a hit, the focused beam of parching thermal energy deals 1d4 + 1d4 desiccating heat damage; if the target is an aquatic creature, plant monstrosity, or ooze, the strike deals full damage plus an additional 2 points of moisture-stripping force.
  • Spirit-Ward of the Orchard: By bracing the tray forward and spending an action to sing an ancestor lullaby, the bearer summons a circular whirl of warm air and dried chaff around themselves until the start of their next turn. This swirling barrier imposes disadvantage on incoming melee attacks from beasts, swarms of stinging insects, and fungal spore clouds.

Trade Venues and Commercial Exchanges for Shamanic 418 of the Orchard Hearth

  • Oasis Caravan Encampments and Nomadic Steppe Bazaars:
    • Description: These bustling, temporary trading circles are assembled at natural spring crossroads, pastoral trail hubs, and canyon oasis passes across arid island interiors. The shops consist of felted wool yurts, camel-hair awnings, and low wooden carpets spread directly over packed earth or sand. The shopkeepers are transhumant pastoral traders, ancestral elders, or wandering shamans who follow seasonal grazing routes and wild windfall crops. The air smells of roasting grain, dried mountain mint, tallow grease, and pack-beast musk.
    • How it is Bought and Sold: Avatars seeking to buy the tray engage in unhurried, ceremonial bartering over small cups of boiled tea. The seller demonstrates the basin’s function by tossing handfuls of damp steppe plums or river reed shoots onto the wicker bed, letting the buyer observe the amber crystal pulse as warm air rises through the mesh. When an avatar sells an item here, the pastoral elders inspect the tamarisk rim for beetle bores and test the resilience of the horsehair braiding. Payouts are made in loose precious metal, unminted silver wire, or barter quantities of cured tallow, dried mutton jerky, and pressed seed bricks. The merchant deducts approximately 10% times the character’s tier level from the base valuation as their trade allowance.
    • Cost:
      • Purchase Price: 30 to 38 Silver coins, or 60 to 76 Nickel pieces.
      • Sell Offer: 28 to 31 Silver coins, frequently settled in mixed coinage and high-nutrition travel provisions.
  • Municipal Produce Cooperatives and Greengrocer Exchanges:
    • Description: Operating within permanent, covered market stalls of mid-sized agricultural towns and coastal river ports, these family-run cooperatives handle wholesale garden harvests, orchard pressings, and dry-store provisioning. They feature whitewashed clay walls, long cedar display benches, hanging baskets of garlic and onions, and stone cellars designed to keep fresh root crops cool before shipment by covered wagon to central cities.
    • How it is Bought and Sold: Proprietary shopkeepers acquire these items to rapidly dehydrate surplus orchard stock before seasonal rains cause rot. An avatar purchasing a tray selects from finished pieces hanging by their hemp straps behind the scale counter. The avatar uses their Mind’s Eye to verify that the Tier 1 magic crystal holds a stable charge and that the spirit-attunement runes are undamaged. When an avatar sells a tray to the cooperative, the grocer runs an active check on the basin’s wicker weave to ensure it has not absorbed toxic sap, lamp oil, or beast venom during previous wilderness expeditions. Official town market dues of 1% to 3% are calculated directly at the weighing desk.
    • Cost:
      • Purchase Price (Standard Adventurer): 35 to 45 Silver coins, or 7 to 9 Electrum pieces.
      • Purchase Price (Recognized Agricultural Guild Member): 31 to 40 Silver coins with a verified open faction badge.
      • Sell Offer: 31 Silver coins, paid in local trade coin or deposited directly into the seller’s World Bank ledger.
  • General Outfitting Posts and Wilderness Supply Emporiums:
    • Description: Situated along the main patrolled country roadways between coastal harbors and central inland capitals, these multi-story timber and stone outfitting posts cater to long-distance travelers, wagon teamsters, and adventuring parties. The interiors are packed with iron cook pots, canvas bedrolls, water skins, pack saddles, salt blocks, and preserved emergency rations stacked from floor to heavy timber rafters.
    • How it is Bought and Sold: Items are shelved as specialty expedition gear under utility and foraging equipment. A prospective buyer inspects the tray’s reinforced hemp straps to confirm it can be lashed securely to a pack without interfering with a backpack or sash. Sales are handled briskly by counter clerks who log the transaction into company ledgers. If an avatar brings a used tray to sell, the appraiser verifies the structural hit points of the tamarisk wood and checks that the parrying buckler rim has not suffered impact fractures from weapon strikes. The clerk offers a standardized payout that accounts for the post’s fixed overhead and transport taxes.
    • Cost:
      • Purchase Price: 40 to 50 Silver coins, or 4 to 5 Gold coins.
      • Sell Offer: 30 to 32 Silver coins, processed via coin counter or transferred through an official World Bank payment draft.
  • Subterranean Reclamation Dens and Unlicensed Fence Cellars:
    • Description: Hidden beneath the damp stone foundations of fortified coastal wharfs, abandoned sewer channels, or unpatrolled alleyways behind dockside taverns, these clandestine dens deal in uncataloged goods, scavenged dungeon loot, and equipment harvested from deceased avatars whose gear escaped party retrieval. The rooms are dimly lit by smoky lard lamps, smelling of mildew, wet stone, and bilge wash.
    • How it is Bought and Sold: Transactions here operate strictly outside royal court jurisdiction, guild oversight, and World Bank scrutiny. Fences pay no mind to whose family orchard the tray was taken from or whether it was smuggled past state border garrisons without paying the mandatory 5% transit tariff. The buyer pays a premium for an untagged, functional spirit conduit that carries no registered maker tags or royal tax stamps. When an avatar sells the item here, the broker pays out immediately in unrecorded physical metal, though they will aggressively undervalue the wicker tray as mundane farm salvage unless the seller actively demonstrates its parching combat ability against the damp cellar walls.
    • Cost:
      • Purchase Price: 50 to 65 Silver coins, or 5 to 6 Gold coins in raw metal.
      • Sell Offer: 25 to 30 Silver coins in unminted physical coin, rising up to 50 Silver coins if the fence has an immediate order from smugglers requiring compact food-curing implements for long sea voyages through hostile waters.

Operational Field Application and Roleplay of the Orchard Hearth Across Diverse Environments

  • Sun-Baked Arid Steppes and Desert Sand Washes:
    • Environmental Context: The interior flats of arid island lands feature intense direct exposure to Helios, blinding surface glare, dry thermal wind currents, and scarce surface hydration. Rock formations and scrub hollows offer minimal natural cover, leaving travelers exposed to fast-moving nomadic raiders and predatory steppe cats.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • When ambushed across open gravel by mounted archers or thrown javelins, the avatar grips the tamarisk rim with their off-hand, bracing the shallow basin outward like a light parrying buckler.
      • The avatar invokes the Spirit-Ward of the Orchard by singing a low-toned ancestral chant, spending an action to align the horsehair cords with the rising thermal heat of the ground.
      • A whistling whirlwind of baking air, loose dry chaff, and stinging dust grains whips into motion immediately in front of the wicker frame, blurring the avatar’s silhouette and throwing incoming arrows off their true trajectories.
      • Against pouncing feral beasts, the avatar utilizes the light 1 AC bonus of the reinforced rim to deflect claw swipes, following up by channeling the warm airflow directly into the animal’s face to deter close-range engagement without relying on clumsy heavy metal shields.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Targeting an adversary seeking cover behind dry scrub brush or an attacking desert beast, the avatar brandishes the central amber crystal directly toward the target within 20 feet.
      • Channeling their Tier 1 attack die into the Shamanic Sun-Breath Smite, the avatar shouts a rhythmic verse commanding the parching wind spirits to strike.
      • A visible beam of shimmering thermal heat lances across the distance, striking the target with desiccating force to deliver combined bludgeoning and moisture-stripping heat damage.
      • In narrative terms, the strike rapidly parches the exposed skin and mucous membranes of the target, causing dry coughing, blistering lips, and unbalancing the foe’s fighting stance across the loose desert shale.
  • Dense Swamp Estuaries, Mangrove Bogs, and Tidal Salt Marshes:
    • Environmental Context: Lowland coastal regions are saturated with stagnant brackish water, rotting organic silt, suffocating humidity, and thick swarms of biting midges and toxic spore mosses. The air is so damp that untreated timber rots within days, and walking through deep sludge severely slows foot travel.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Trudging through knee-deep mire, the avatar keeps the basin held at chest height to prevent brackish marsh water from soaking their carried gear.
      • When a cloud of parasitic swamp gnats, biting flies, or spore puffs descends upon the party, the avatar activates the Spirit-Ward of the Orchard with a sharp, hummed vocalization.
      • The basin creates a localized envelope of dry, circulating heat that crisps the delicate wings of the insect swarm on contact, causing them to drop uselessly into the black sludge while shielding the avatar’s face and throat from toxic inhalation.
      • If ambushed by a swamp troll or bog serpent striking from underwater reeds, the avatar raises the tamarisk border to catch the downward strike, letting the resilient wicker mesh absorb the blunt kinetic force.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Facing water-dependent monstrosities, gelatinous oozes, or creeping toxic vine clusters, the avatar points the drying basin forward and executes Siphon the Sapsucker’s Mist as an offensive maneuver.
      • The shamanic weave forcefully pulls up to a gallon of vital moisture directly from the creature’s outer hide or fluid membrane within 20 feet, venting the extracted liquid as a harmless cloud of white steam.
      • Followed immediately by a Shamanic Sun-Breath Smite, the blast deals amplified moisture-stripping force against the plant or aquatic foe, shriveling damp vines into brittle husks, causing slimy hides to crack, and opening defensive gaps for allies to exploit.
  • Dark Cavern Vaults, Fungal Pits, and Magma Channels:
    • Environmental Context: Subterranean cave systems and deep volcanic tunnels beneath the island crust feature stagnant air, moisture-dripping stalactites, flammable marsh gases, and dense carpets of damp cavern mold. In areas near underground magma flows, heat can be oppressive, while water remains exceptionally scarce.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • In cramped stone passages infested with bioluminescent cave molds or creeping slimes that drop from the ceiling, the avatar holds the tray overhead like a protective umbrella.
      • The passive Hearth-Spirit Desiccation keeps stray fungal spores, damp slime droplets, and condensation from settling onto the avatar’s shoulders or spoiling the perishable rations kept in nearby belt pouches.
      • When an underground predator launches a surprise strike from a wall cleft, the avatar drops into a low crouch, bracing the basin’s tamarisk edge against the cavern floor to parry the initial blow while using the horsehair cords to maintain static equilibrium in the tight space.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Facing subterranean abominations or fungal colonies clinging to the rock face, the avatar uses the basin’s focused heat channel to clear the path.
      • The avatar enters a short trance, drawing on the memory of the sun above the moon’s crust to focus the amber crystal into an active beam of Shamanic Sun-Breath Smite.
      • The concussive, parching pulse strikes damp fungal stalks and moss cushions with sudden thermal shock, instantly drying out their structural moisture and causing them to snap, crumble into dry powder, and lose their grip on the stone walls.
      • The kinetic impact pushes smaller cave beasts five feet backward into rock fissures, breaking up enemy pack maneuvers in the narrow confines of the cavern corridor.
  • High-Seas Sailing Vessels and Storm-Tossed Decks:
    • Environmental Context: Traveling along the westward-flowing ocean currents places avatars on wooden deck surfaces exposed to violent salt spray, rogue tidal swells, and sudden equatorial downpours. Constant moisture creates slippery footholds and threatens to ruin stores of grain, fruit, and gunpowder in the hold.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Standing on the slick, heaving forecastle of a merchant caravel during a sudden squall, the avatar unslings the tray from their pack, holding it outward to meet the incoming sea spray.
      • The avatar invokes Siphon the Sapsucker’s Mist to instantly clear puddles of standing seawater and seafoam from the immediate deck planking, creating a dry, slip-resistant surface under their boots and those of nearby allies.
      • When hostile boarding parties loose grappling hooks, throwing hatchets, or heavy salt-weighted ropes from an adjacent raider skiff, the avatar activates the Spirit-Ward of the Orchard, spinning a curtain of warm air and dried grain dust that catches throwing lines and turns aside ranged weapons.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Engaging boarding raiders or aquatic boarders scaling the vessel’s hull lines, the avatar brandishes the tray over the ship’s gunwale.
      • Focusing on the damp, scaled skin of an ascending sea creature, the avatar executes Shamanic Sun-Breath Smite, driving a focused thermal beam directly into the creature’s gill slits and sensory frills.
      • The sudden stripping of surface moisture causes excruciating burning and disorientation to the salt-adapted organism, forcing it to release its grip on the boarding net and plunge back into the churning ocean current below.

    • Spirit Presence: The user senses the benevolent, ancestral attention of minor hearth and steppe essences leaning over the edge of the tray, eager to tend the harvest.
    • Vitality Siphon Awareness: When channeling active drying magic, the user feels an exact spiritual weight corresponding to the volume of liquid being extracted from the target, feeling the snap of broken moisture bonds in their mind.
    • Harmonic Calm: A wave of ancestral patience washes over the possessing character soul, subduing impulsive panic and anchoring the avatar’s physical focus during tactical action.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight:
    • Observers see the circular wicker tray brighten from its center, casting a circular pattern of amber light onto the avatar’s chest and face.
    • Sliced fruits or plants laid on the mesh visibly shrink and darken into rich, cured colors over mere seconds, venting plumes of translucent vapor that disperse upward.
    • When swung defensively or used for smiting, a halo of swirling chaff, dried chaff particles, and amber light forms a radiant perimeter around the avatar.
  • Hearing:
    • Those nearby hear a sudden rustling cadence like wind shaking a dry wheat field, followed by the avatar’s rhythmic chanting.
    • The concussive discharge of a drying smite produces a dry, whip-like snap through the air, completely distinct from the heavy thunder of elemental air magic.
  • Touch:
    • Allies standing within five paces feel an immediate, dry draft of warm air that pushes away ambient dampness, clearing the chill of sea fog or cold cavern mist.
    • Exposed skin feels a slight prickling sensation of rapid evaporation, drying stray droplets of sweat or rain on garments.
  • Smell:
    • Observers immediately catch the rich, appetizing aroma of baking fruit pies, warm dried dates, and toasted prairie grass drifting across the immediate area.
  • Taste:
    • Anyone opening their mouth near the active tray notices a sudden, dry warmth on the palate with a fleeting hint of toasted seeds.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mind’s Eye Reading: Observers inspecting the avatar with an active Mind’s Eye see the tray register as “Attuned / Active,” displaying its Tier 1 classification, the +1 AC parrying shield profile, and the active drying and spirit-channeling enchantments.
    • Atmospheric Drain: Spiritual or magical practitioners sense a brief, localized void in ambient water mana, as if the space surrounding the tray has suddenly become completely spiritually arid.

Positives

  • Sustained Field Provisioning:
    • Enables the rapid production of high-nutrition, rot-resistant travel rations from wild foraged fruits and botanicals in minutes, preventing food waste during long wilderness expeditions.
  • Alchemical Reagent Preparation:
    • Desiccates delicate medicinal roots, venom glands, and swamp botanicals without cooking or destroying their volatile magical and restorative properties.
  • Versatile Defensive Guard:
    • Functions as an effective parrying buckler providing a +1 Armor Check bonus, with an activable chaff ward that imposes disadvantage on melee beast attacks and insect swarms.
  • Moisture-Stripping Offensive Power:
    • Deals devastating moisture-deprivation damage against aquatic fauna, oozes, and plant horrors, turning their biological makeup into brittle, easily shattered husks.
  • Immediate Swamp & Ship Utility:
    • Can instantly siphon standing water from slick ship decks, muddy footing, or soaked clothing, improving travel conditions in wet terrain.

Negatives

  • Dehydration Threat:
    • Prolonged continuous use in arid or desert regions exacerbates the user’s natural thirst, accelerating thirst levels and requiring frequent water consumption.
  • Strong Aromatic Scent:
    • The intense, sweet scent of heated date sugars and dried fruit spreads far on the wind, making stealth difficult and potentially attracting hungry predators or scavengers in the wild.
  • Physical Brittleness:
    • Constructed of reed wicker and light tamarisk wood, the basin possesses lower inherent structural resilience than forged metal bucklers, risking structural damage if subjected to crushing blunt weaponry or heavy siege strikes.
  • Flame Hazard:
    • The basin’s dry, parched wicker construction makes it vulnerable to extreme magical fire or continuous flame contact if its ward is not actively maintained.
  • Limited Target Range:
    • Offensive spirit smiting and moisture draining are constrained to a simple range of 20 feet, requiring the avatar to close within close quarters to affect targets.

Recipe: The Woven Hearth-Mesh of the Orchard Shaman

Materials Needed

  • Core Framing & Structure:
    • One seasoned, flexible branch of desert tamarisk wood, measuring six feet in length and one inch in thickness, free of deep fissures and treated with warm seed oil.
    • Three bundles of split river reeds, harvested during the dry heat of midsummer and thoroughly sun-bleached.
  • Magical Catalyst:
    • One intact Tier 1 magic crystal, coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested from an adult thermal steppe beast or found within a sunny mineral wash.
  • Sacrificial Component:
    • One mundane or worn leather fruit-press strap or horn grain-scoop that formerly held minor preservation or drying enchantments. This object is entirely consumed and disintegrated during the spirit-attunement process to pass its latent moisture-drawing essence into the weave.
  • Biological & Herbal Reagents:
    • Four fluid drams of amber mountain honey mixed with wild steppe-sage sap, gathered using a fluid collector to serve as an aromatic spiritual resin.
    • Two drams of powdered desert gypsum mixed with bone ash from a domesticated pack-beast, used to seal the crystalline seat.
  • Cordage & Fasteners:
    • Twenty yards of coarse horsehair cord, hand-twisted and steeped in a vat of yellow ochre root dye.
    • Six yards of triple-braided hemp cord for the exterior carrying loops and pack straps.
    • Four carved pegs of bone or fire-hardened hardwood to pin the outer tamarisk hoop joint.

Tools Required

  • Steam-bending trough or enclosed steam kettle to soften and shape the tamarisk wood without fracturing its fibers.
  • Bone bodkin and split-wood awl for threading horsehair cord tightly through the reed wickerwork.
  • One fluid collector syringe used to extract, measure, and apply the herbal sap mixture.
  • Small wood gouge and rotary rasp to hollow out the central wooden boss and crystal cradle.
  • Low-heat hearth brazier or glowing charcoal box to cure the resin without scorching the reed bed.

Skill Requirements

  • Basketry & Wicker Weaving: Level 3 or higher. Required to weave the split river reeds into a balanced, tight concentric bed that flexes without snapping under impact.
  • Woodworking & Joinery: Level 2 or higher. Essential for steaming, bending, and scarfed-pinning the tamarisk branch into a true, load-bearing circular hoop.
  • Shamanic Spirit Craft (Ancestral Inscription): Level 1 or higher. Necessary for reciting the repetitive prayers to the steppe hearth spirits and channeling the sacrificial component into the core mesh.

Crafting Steps

  • Step 1: Steaming and Forming the Tamarisk Hoop:
    • Place the seasoned tamarisk branch into the steam trough for two hours until pliable.
    • Bend the branch into a uniform circle roughly two feet in diameter, overlapping the ends with an angled scarf joint.
    • Drill through the joint and drive the four bone pegs through the overlap, trimming them flush and allowing the hoop to dry and set into a rigid structural buckler rim.
  • Step 2: Carving the Central Boss and Cradle:
    • Carve a small circular hub from a block of tamarisk wood to serve as the central boss.
    • Hollow out a rounded seat on the upper face sized to hold the coin-sized Tier 1 crystal.
    • Gouge radial channels into the edge of the hub where the primary structural reed warps will be anchored.
  • Step 3: Weaving the Reed Bed and Horsehair Spirals:
    • Anchor the split reed warps into the radial notches of the central boss, extending them outward to the steam-bent tamarisk rim.
    • Interweave the flexible reed wefts in a tight, concentric spiral pattern from the center out to the perimeter.
    • Using the bone bodkin, lace the ochre-dyed horsehair cords through the reed channels in an interlocking stepped-cross pattern, ensuring the cords lay flush to channel warm air currents across the surface.
  • Step 4: Sacrificial Infusion and Crystal Seating:
    • Blend the mountain honey, sage sap, and gypsum powder into an aromatic paste using a mortar.
    • Draw the mixture into the fluid collector and line the hollow of the central boss.
    • Lay the sacrificial leather fruit-press strap or horn grain-scoop over the central cradle and apply low heat from a brazier while chanting ancestral prayers.
    • As the sacrificial item crumbles into glowing ash, immediately press the Tier 1 magic crystal down into the warm cinders and resin paste.
    • Continue chanting for ten minutes as the amber crystal bonds with the wood, pulsing with a warm, steady golden light to confirm the spirit pact is sealed.
  • Step 5: Affixing Reinforcements and Pack Straps:
    • Lash the three braided hemp loop straps around the outer tamarisk border at equal intervals, securing them with tight whipping knots to allow mounting to a pack, mount, or arm.
    • Rub the entire wooden rim and wicker mesh with boiled seed oil to protect the materials against rot and dirt.
    • Place several slices of damp fruit onto the mesh to test the active drying flow; when steam begins to vent cleanly from the edges, the focus is ready for field use.

Parching Basin of Seven Plums and Thirsting Demon of Dune

In the cycle of great turning before the counting of the nine thousands of sun-rounds, when the moon-soil was still wet with the milk of the early earth-mother, there wandered upon the scrub-flats of Ghassulian a herder of goats whose voice was like dry grass scraped upon slate. His name in the crooked bone-scratching was Bar-Zulum, which in the tongue of the salt-sellers signifieth He-Who-Cheweth-Rinds. He possessed neither an iron coat nor a house with four square posts, but only seven shaggy beasts of milk and a wicker hoop of tamarisk wood which his mother’s grandfather had pulled from the river before the river turned to red gravel.

Now upon the high ridge of white lime there grew three wild trees of the hill-plum. In the fourth week of the Blooming, when the sky-fire Helios stood tall like a copper pot at the hour of noon, the boughs of the three trees bent down until their green hair swept the dust, heavy with fruit that was purple like a king’s bruise and sweet as melted fat.

Bar-Zulum spoke unto his shaggy goats: “Behold, the sky-eater shall soon turn his face away, and the great ball of vapor shall drop its shadow upon our heads. If we eat not the plums, the black mold-weevil shall drink their marrow, and when the cold darkness of Dimming falleth, our teeth shall rattle like pebbles in an empty jar.”

He plucked the fruit into his wicker hoop until the reed mesh groaned. But the air was thick with the river-mist, and the wet dew did not depart from the skins of the plums. They sat fat and leaking water, beginning to smell of vinegar and ditch-rot.

Then Bar-Zulum laid his brown belly upon the sand and called into the mole-holes where the small hearth-spirits chew dry seeds. He took a flint splinter and made a drop of scarlet grease leap from his thumb-meat, letting it fall upon the center-knob of tamarisk wood where slept a pebble of yellow glass.

“O ye small warm dogs who abide under the roots,” whispered the goat-herder, “come forth and blow your breath through my reeds. If ye drink the juice of my thumb, ye shall sit upon my tray and eat the sweet water of the hill-plum, so that it rot not into stinking bile.”

The earth muttered below like a boiling porridge-pot. Out from the cracked limestone crept three score of the hairy sun-lice, which the ancients named the Breath-Eaters of the Dune. They climbed into the woven horsehair of the hoop. They sat in rings like beggars at a gate, blowing from their nostrils a hot, dry wind that smelled of toasted barley and dried honey-cakes.

Behold, the water fled from the purple plums in white smoke! The flesh of the fruit grew wrinkled, tough, and black as sheep-droppings, but sweet within as the gum of the date-palm. Bar-Zulum stuffed his leather scrip with the dried meat, and his belly was filled, and his goats licked his salt-crusted elbows in peace.

Now there dwelt beneath the bitter well of the salt-pan an unclean crawler, an ancient belly-demon of the ooze whose appellation is The-Sack-Which-Gulpeth-Brine. This demon was bloated with the poison water of the swamps, having four mouths like leeches and skin like a wet bladder that hath lain in a ditch for seven rains. He smelled the sweet steam of the dried fruit floating upon the east-to-west wind.

The demon crawled from his mud-wallow, dragging his soft belly across the flint stones, his slime leaving a track of dead grass behind him. He looked upon Bar-Zulum and opened his four gullets, bellowing: “Give unto me the dry cakes of the plum-meat, thou little two-pegged dirt-crawler, or I shall vomit my swamp-bilge over thy goats and turn thy lungs into ponds of green frog-spit!”

Bar-Zulum was sore afraid, for he had no spear of copper and his teeth were blunt from chewing dried grains. But he remembered the vow of the steppe-spirits that sat within his wicker rim.

He held the tamarisk basin before his ribs like a shepherd’s milk-bowl, pointing the yellow eye of stone straight into the largest gullet of the crawler. He shouted the three names of the dry wind which his grandfather had scratched upon sheep-ribs: “Arid! Parching! Thirst-Without-End!”

The yellow glass in the center of the wicker tray shouted with a light like a prairie-fire. The hairy breath-spirits within the horsehair weave drew in their bellies and sucked with great hunger. They sucked not at the plum-fruit, but at the bloated hide of the mud-demon!

A sound went forth like the pulling of great boots out of deep mire. The foul, green water within the belly of the demon was torn out in a roaring fountain of grey steam. His wet bladder-skin shriveled; his leech-mouths curled backward like dry leather shoes left too long beside the brazier; his four throats choked upon the salt of his own bones. The demon wept tears of dry sand, beating his shrunken paws against the stones as his fat meat shrank into a dried knot of bitter leather no larger than an old pumpkin.

Bar-Zulum struck the dried husk with the tamarisk rim of his tray, and the demon broke into grey dust that blew away across the gravel plains toward the setting of Helios.

Then the goat-herder gathered up his beasts and went his way down into the valleys of Natufian, carrying the dried plums in his scrip and his wicker basin upon his spine. And the people of the tents marveled that a herdsman who owned no sword could make a great water-demon perish into ash merely by holding up a shallow tray of reeds.

Moral: The wise traveler drieth his fruit while the sun stands tall, for the hand that mastereth thirst can wither the belly of the greatest swamp-beast when the waters of peace run dry.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition / 2024 Revision)

Hearth-Mesh of the Orchard Shaman Armor (Shield / Light Buckler), Common (Requires Attunement)

  • Description and Profile:
    • Woven from sun-bleached river reeds and bound in a steam-bent frame of seasoned tamarisk wood, this shallow, circular tray features concentric spirals of ochre horsehair cord. At its center rests a coin-sized amber gemstone that pulses with faint golden warmth. Crafted by nomadic pastoralists to cure wild windfalls and preserve seasonal crops against mold, the tray channels ancestral desiccation spirits that can be wielded defensively or turned offensively against moisture-reliant entities.
    • Base Armor Class: Wielding this item in one hand provides a +1 bonus to Armor Class (functioning as a light wicker buckler).
    • Weight: 2 lbs.
  • Properties and Item Mechanics:
    • Hearth-Spirit Desiccation (Passive): Fresh fruit, sliced edible plants, or harvested herbs placed upon the wicker bed dehydrate five times faster than through natural sun-drying, losing no nutritional value and producing long-lasting, rot-resistant field rations that remain preserved indefinitely in dry conditions.
    • Whisper of the Ripened Bough (Passive): While holding or carrying the tray, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Wisdom (Survival) checks made to forage, identify edible or poisonous flora, and determine the freshness or rot level of organic provisions.
    • Siphon Moisture (Active Utility): As an action, you can present the tray toward an area of natural water, saturated earth, or damp vegetation within 20 feet. The basin absorbs and vents up to 1 gallon of moisture into harmless steam, leaving the targeted area dry and brittle.
    • Parching Ray (Active Attack): As an action, you point the central amber stone at a target within 20 feet and vocalize an ancestral chant. Make a ranged spell attack using your spell attack modifier (or Wisdom if you lack a spellcasting class). On a hit, the target takes 1d6 necrotic or fire damage (your choice) as its moisture is violently pulled away. If the target is an ooze, plant creature, or has the Water subtype, the damage increases to 2d6.
    • Chaff Ward (1/Day): As a reaction when an attacking beast, insect swarm, or plant creature makes a melee attack against you, you can trigger a sudden whirl of warm air and stinging dried chaff from the mesh, imposing disadvantage on the triggering attack roll.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

Steppe-Feast Tray of Bar-Zulum Bizarre Prehistoric Relic / Folk-Magic Artifact

  • Description and History:
    • A circular, woven reed platter roughly sixty centimeters in diameter, bound with dried sinew and brittle tamarisk wood. Embedded in the central boss is a cabochon of dark yellow amber that feels warm to the touch. Carbon dating places the reeds prior to recorded Mesopotamian agriculture. When held, sensitive minds perceive the faint whispering of predatory desert spirits that consume moisture and flesh alike.
    • Skill: Fighting (Brawl)
    • Damage: 1d3 + half Damage Bonus (Bludgeoning)
    • Armor / Durability: Provides 1 point of physical armor when actively used to parry handheld melee strikes; possesses 8 Hit Points.
    • Sanity Cost: 0/1 SAN to witness the unnatural rapid shriveling of living tissue or liquid siphoning; 1/1d3 SAN to actively invoke the spirit-thirst.
  • Operational Mechanics and Spells:
    • Botanical Preservation (Passive):
      • Organic matter, food rations, or biological samples placed upon the reeds are rapidly dehydrated over a period of minutes without cellular rot or bacterial breakdown, maintaining pristine preservation for future study or consumption.
    • Siphon Fluid (Cost: 2 Magic Points):
      • The user concentrates on a puddle, soaked garment, or water container within 5 yards and makes a POW check. On a success, up to four liters of water instantly boil off as odorless, cold white vapor, leaving behind dry salt crusts or desiccated soil.
    • Desiccating Strike (Cost: 4 Magic Points):
      • The user points the amber core at a living target within 6 yards and utters a harsh nomadic curse, spending one combat round.
      • The user rolls an Art/Craft (Chanting), Occult, or Fighting (Brawl) check versus the target’s Dodge.
      • On a success, the target suffers 1d6 damage as moisture is wrenched from its eyes, lips, and flesh. If the target is an amorphous entity, aquatic horror (such as a Deep One), or slime-based organism, the damage is increased to 1d10.
    • Chaff Screen (Cost: 3 Magic Points):
      • As a defensive reaction against an oncoming physical attack by an animal, insectoid entity, or natural predator, the user expends 3 MP to release a cloud of warm, stinging grit and dried chaff.
      • The attacker must make a Hard CON check; failure imposes one Penalty Die on all attack rolls against the user until the end of the round.
    • Fumble / Malfunction:
      • If an activation roll results in a 96–100, the hungry spirits feed on the bearer. The user takes 1d4 direct damage from internal dehydration, suffers one level of thirst exhaustion, and loses 1d4 Magic Points.

      • Swarm Ward (Armor Use): You may spend 1 point of your Armor load (or 2 Stress) to activate the swirling chaff and dry air shield, functioning as Special Armor strictly against swarms of vermin, animal bites, or spore clouds.
  • Consequences and Complications:
    • The amber bead emits a sudden, sweet scent of warm stewed fruit, alerting nearby Bluecoats, scavengers, or hunting hounds to your exact hiding spot.
    • The dry-spirits demand hydration, inflicting Level 1 Harm: “Parched & Shaky” on the user unless immediately satisfied with a draught of fresh water.
