Seiðr 419 of the Gilt Bone Tally Wand

Lore

  • In the bustling river-ports, mining settlements, and caravan hubs of Saṃsāra, wealth is understood not merely as physical metal, but as a flowing current of obligation, trust, and shared labor. The Seiðr-weavers of old recognized that trade ledgers and exchange houses possess their own metaphysical weave—a web of debt and value that can be read like runes cast upon a cloth. Handcrafted from the dense, sun-bleached rib bone of a pack-ox that perished in honest service, the Gilt-Bone Tally-Wand is an economic focus created for merchant-avatars, guild stewards, and honest appraisers. By entering a calm, mathematical Seiðr trance while running a thumb along its notched gold leaf, the wielder perceives the genuine value of goods, discerns the weight of hidden greed, and divines shifting market currents before the opening of the morning trade bell.

Description

  • The item is a ten-inch straight rod carved from polished, cream-white ox rib bone, smoothed to a satin finish. Along its length, sixteen precise calculation notches are inlaid with beaten electrum and fine leaf-gold, forming a dual counting track. At the wand’s tip, a small brass wire cage encases an uncut, citrine-yellow Tier 1 magic crystal that glimmers with a warm, steady radiance. A loop of braided lamb’s wool cord dyed deep saffron passes through a drilled hole at the base, allowing the wand to dangle from a merchant’s wrist or utility belt. When held during financial appraisal, it feels pleasantly warm—like a coin kept in a pocket near the skin—and emits a faint, metallic chime that sounds like the gentle counting of silver pieces across slate.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Tier: Tier 1
  • Item Rarity: Common
  • Item Resilience: 12
  • Item Health Points: Avatar maximum hit points plus 12
  • Armor Check: N/A
  • Damage: N/A (Can serve as an improvised light bludgeon: 1d4 bludgeoning, light, finesse)
  • Weight: 0.8 pounds
  • Operational Lifespan Check: When an activated magical ability concludes, roll 1d20; on a roll of 1, the citrine-yellow crystal fractures, causing the electrum leaf to tarnish black and neutralizing all magical properties until the crystal is replaced.
  • Attunement Requirement: Held attunement (requires spending 1 uninterrupted minute running a silver coin along the electrum notches while murmuring a rhythmic counting chant in a quiet Seiðr trance)
  • Commercial Valuation: Suggested trade benchmark is 16 silver coins.

Specific Slot

  • Held / Belt Slot (wielded in one hand during business negotiations or secured to a belt loop via the saffron wool cord)

Passive Magic

  • Assay of the Honest Metal: While holding or wearing the tally-wand, the avatar passively detects counterfeit coinage, debased bullion, shaved edges, or gilded base metals simply by holding or touching them. The wand emits a distinct, sour rattle against the palm if touched metal contains less than ninety percent pure declared alloy.
  • Ledger’s Equilibrium: The avatar gains a passive +2 bonus (or advantage) on all checks made to appraise the fair market value of mundane commodities, inspect trade cargo for hidden rot or tampering, and balance complex financial records.

Activable Magic

  • Market Weft Divination: The avatar sits quietly for 1 full minute, gently tapping the citrine tip against a trade ledger, market slate, or sample good while humming a low-pitched Seiðr cadence. The avatar divines regional supply and demand for that specific commodity across a 10-mile radius for the next 24 hours, learning whether local prices are artificially inflated, suppressed by hoarding, or destined to rise due to an impending caravan arrival.
  • Avarice-Tension Glance: As an action, the wielder holds the wand upright between thumb and forefinger, pointing it toward a creature within 30 feet engaged in active bargaining or negotiation. The citrine crystal flares with a faint amber pulse visible only to the wielder. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 13). On a failure, the wielder intuitively discerns the target’s lowest acceptable selling price or highest willing buying bid, as well as whether the target is intentionally concealing a financial fraud or personal desperation.
  • Debt-Weight Anchor: As an action, the wielder presents the wand and names a fair, verbal commercial agreement, contract, or debt established between two willing parties within 15 feet. For 24 hours, if either signatory willfully breaks the agreed terms or attempts to abscond without settling the debt, the defaulting party suffers a -2 penalty on all Charisma-based social checks and a 10-foot reduction in movement speed as metaphysical weight burdens their limbs until the ledger is balanced.
  • Liquidate Impasse: As an action during deadlocked negotiations or tense commercial disputes, the wielder raps the wand firmly against a table or trade scale. A soft, chime-like shockwave spreads in a 15-foot radius. All hostile or stubborn emotions tied to greed and suspicion are momentarily subdued; targets within the radius must make a Charisma saving throw (DC 13) or become open to a compromise, granting the avatar a +2 circumstance bonus on their next Persuasion or Negotiation check made within 1 minute. Roll the operational lifespan check immediately following this action.

Commercial Exchanges, Guild Vaults, and Trade Markets for the Gilt-Bone Tally-Wand

  • Merchant Guildhalls and Commercial Chambers:
    • Located at the centers of prominent river ports, chartered trade cities, and central banking districts.
    • Run by senior factors, guild masters, and ledger-keepers who treat the tally-wand as an authorized auditing implement for verifying trade agreements and inspecting bullion shipments.
    • Buying Here: Kept under velvet lining within reinforced oak cabinets alongside brass balancing scales, touchstones, and wax seal presses. The standard purchase cost is 16 to 18 silver coins. The guild often waives 2 silver coins if the buyer holds an active merchant charter or offers fresh, uncut appraisal stones in trade.
    • Selling Here: Guild stewards buy undamaged wands to issue to junior trade inspectors and maritime weighmasters. They pay 11 to 13 silver coins in municipal currency or stamped bank drafts, provided the electrum inlay is unscratched and the citrine node remains intact.
  • Assay Offices and Money-Changers’ Benches:
    • Situated along market plazas, foreign trade piers, and mint entrances where currency from across Saṃsāra is weighed, tested, and exchanged.
    • Operated by licensed assayer-smiths, coin-clippers, and moneyers who use the item’s Assay of the Honest Metal property to rapidly uncover counterfeit coins, debased silver, or lead-weighted bullion.
    • Buying Here: Displayed behind iron-barred counter grills. Because these shops specialize directly in high-volume specie exchange, they charge a practical price of 15 to 17 silver coins.
    • Selling Here: Money-changers pay a steady 10 to 12 silver coins in hard specie for working wands, often checking the bone with touchstones and acid drops to verify it hasn’t absorbed corrosive chemical taints during previous use.
  • Caravan Outposts and Border Waystations:
    • Found along long-haul wagon routes, oasis wells, and high-pass frontiers where overland pack trains consolidate cargo before entering foreign jurisdictions.
    • Maintained by logistics factors, toll wardens, and wagon bosses who rely on Market Weft Divination to determine which regional markets are experiencing gluts or shortages before dispatching teamsters.
    • Buying Here: Hung alongside leather ledgers, cargo cinches, and dry provisions. Due to isolated demand and transport overhead, wagon-post factors sell them at an elevated rate of 18 to 21 silver coins.
    • Selling Here: Waystation masters buy wands eagerly to supply caravan scouts, offering 9 to 11 silver coins in cash, or 13 silver coins worth of draft beast harness, dried trail iron-rations, and spare wagon axles.
  • Auction Houses and Pawnbrokers’ Dens:
    • Positioned in dense tenement quarters, dockside alleys, and artisan squares where forfeited collateral, liquidated estates, and salvage goods are processed.
    • Run by pragmatic appraisers, pawn masters, and estate liquidators who leverage Avarice-Tension Glance and Liquidate Impasse to read bidders’ intentions and close disputed property sales.
    • Buying Here: Mixed into display cases among pocket timepieces, antique signet rings, and ivory gaming pieces. Prices fluctuate widely based on the pawnbroker’s mood, typically sold between 14 and 16 silver coins.
    • Selling Here: Pawnbrokers drive a hard bargain, paying only 7 to 9 silver coins in loose, mixed coin, citing minor surface scratches or worn saffron cords to depress the appraisal payout.
  • Back-Alley Smuggling Dens and Shadow Exchanges:
    • Hidden within undercroft taprooms, unlicensed black markets, and canal basements where tax-evading merchants and contraband syndicates clear non-declared goods.
    • Handled by fence brokers and syndicate tallymen who prize the wand’s ability to silently gauge a buyer’s true bottom-line bid without tipping off municipal tax bailiffs.
    • Buying Here: Kept wrapped in oiled leather rags under gambling tables. Shady dealers demand an inflated 20 to 24 silver coins, relying on the buyer’s need for an unlogged, discreet appraisal tool.
    • Selling Here: Fences buy wands with no questions asked about prior ownership, paying a flat 8 to 10 silver coins in untraceable foreign metal or washed trade tokens.

Tactical Applications and Environmental Roleplay of the Gilt-Bone Tally-Wand

  • Crowded Urban Bazaars and Trade Plazas:
    • Environmental Context: Packed cobblestone lanes, shouting hawkers, stacked cargo crates, roving pickpockets, and aggressive mercantile competition.
    • Defensive Roleplay: Cornered at a stall by an aggressive debt-collector flanked by hired thugs demanding an extortionate “protection fee,” the avatar invokes Assay of the Honest Metal and Ledger’s Equilibrium. By auditing the enforcer’s forged promissory note on the spot, the wand rattles sourly against the bone, exposing the ink and seal as municipal counterfeit before the gathering crowd. When the thugs draw cudgels, the avatar strikes the stall counter with Liquidate Impasse, releasing a calming chime that momentarily pacifies the enforcers’ violent impulse and allows the avatar to slip into the dense pedestrian traffic.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Facing a monopolistic grain factor who is artificially starving a market quarter, the avatar brandishes the wand during public bidding and activates Avarice-Tension Glance. Reading the merchant’s secret reserve price and high-leverage debt limits, the avatar rallies competing peddlers to undercut the cartel at the precise breaking threshold, publicly forcing the hoarder to dump stock at a loss or face total default.
  • Frontier Caravansaries and Waystations:
    • Environmental Context: Open dirt corrals, draft beast pens, tethered wagons, howling wind, and opportunistic raiders posing as legitimate merchants.
    • Defensive Roleplay: When highway bandits infiltrate a night camp under the guise of traveling wool merchants offering “safe-passage bonds,” the avatar holds the wand while discussing the contract. As the bandit leader agrees to terms, the avatar quietly triggers Debt-Weight Anchor. Later, when the bandits draw blades to slaughter the camp in their sleep, the violated agreement manifests as a crushing metaphysical drag, slowing their movement through the mud and giving the caravan sentries time to repel them.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Seeking to secure a string of sturdy pack-oxen from a stubborn, dishonest trader who demands outrageous coin in a remote pass, the avatar activates Canopy Weft Trance principles through Market Weft Divination. Tapping the wand against the beast’s harness, the avatar reveals that a rival caravan two days south is carrying an oversupply of identical stock, forcing the trader to slash the price by half before the market bottoms out.
  • Noble Courts, Tax Vaults, and Guildhalls:
    • Environmental Context: Echoing marble halls, iron-reinforced vaults, armored guards, polished mahogany tables, and high-stakes bureaucratic bribery.
    • Defensive Roleplay: Falsely accused of smuggling and tax evasion by a corrupt city magistrate seeking to seize the party’s assets, the avatar steps forward in open court and demands a ritual Seiðr audit. Placing the tally-wand across the magistrate’s ledgers, the avatar uses Assay of the Honest Metal and Ledger’s Equilibrium to demonstrate that the court’s own clerks have skimmed twenty percent of the treasury’s bullion, immediately turning the bailiffs’ suspicion away from the party and onto the magistrate.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In a closed council chamber where a stubborn war-lord refuses to fund local defenses against an impending subterranean incursion, the avatar slams the ox-bone wand against the war-table to trigger Liquidate Impasse. The chime suppresses the lord’s paranoid greed, and the avatar follows up with Avarice-Tension Glance to discover the lord’s secret financial vulnerability—a defaulting loan held by foreign bankers—leveraging that exact pressure point to compel full funding for the city gates.
  • Under-Market Docks and Smuggling Undercrofts:
    • Environmental Context: Damp canal arches, dripping moss, creaking rowboats, flickering tallow lamps, and illicit fences moving hot goods.
    • Defensive Roleplay: Meeting a fence in a shadowy cellar to purchase vital intelligence, the fence attempts to short-change the party with lead-cored silver bars. The wand vibrates violently in the avatar’s palm via Assay of the Honest Metal. Rather than drawing a weapon in enemy territory, the avatar warns the fence of the fatal chemical poison often used in lead counterfeit, bluffing with Ledger’s Equilibrium to make the criminal surrender the genuine information out of sudden fear.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Tracking an escaped thief who stole an irreplaceable guild artifact, the avatar tracks the thief to a black-market pawn floor. Catching the thief mid-transaction, the avatar points the tally-wand and loudly establishes a verbal indemnity bounty with the fence using Debt-Weight Anchor. When the thief attempts to vault across the cargo skiffs, the broken covenant takes hold, reducing the thief’s stride by ten feet and causing them to stumble into the dirty canal water for easy apprehension.
  • Mining Enclaves and Smelting Outposts:
    • Environmental Context: Blast furnaces, slag heaps, clanging iron sledges, choking soot, and grueling laborer tensions.
    • Defensive Roleplay: Caught in the middle of a violent riot between disenfranchised miners and armed company guards over withheld wages, the avatar mounts an ore cart and unleashes Liquidate Impasse. The chime cuts through the deafening din of the smelters, instantly dampening the murderous temper of both the strikers and the mercenaries long enough to force the company factor to present the pay ledger for an emergency public appraisal.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Investigating a mining syndicate that claims its veins of rare elemental ore have run completely dry, the avatar touches the tally-wand to the mine carts using Market Weft Divination. By reading the latent trade currents imprinted on the iron wheels, the avatar divines that the owners have been secretly stockpiling the ore in an abandoned lower drift to starve the market and triple the sale price, providing hard proof to the city council to revoke the syndicate’s charter.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight: As attunement locks in, the citrine-yellow crystal inside its brass cage flares with a clear, golden-amber radiance. The sixteen inlaid calculation notches blaze with molten electrum light, casting a subtle, shimmering geometric grid across the surrounding ten paces. Fine, translucent tally-marks and value-threads seem to link commodities, coins, and ledger pages within sight, subtly highlighting flaws, debased metals, or hidden tampering in pale crimson.
  • Hearing: The low whirring hum of the wand’s Seiðr attunement gives way to an internal, rhythmic chime—clear and sweet like freshly minted silver pieces tumbling across dry slate. When touched against honest goods, this tone harmonizes; when brought near counterfeit coin, it grates as a harsh, dissonant clatter directly against the mind.
  • Smell: A clean, dry scent washes over the user, evocative of aged vellum ledgers, melting beeswax seals, warm brass scales, and the crisp, unmistakable tang of cold bullion.
  • Taste: A distinct, faint metallic sharpness coats the tongue, reminiscent of holding a polished copper token or testing the cold edge of silver between teeth.
  • Touch: The polished ox-bone heats to a steady, pleasant fever-warmth against the palm, pulsing rhythmically like a resting heart. When sweeping across trade goods, the wand pushes back with a gentle magnetic drag over items of exceptional quality, and vibrates sharply over hollowed or adulterated materials.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Debt-Current Divination: The wielder senses the invisible web of obligation, credit, and unpaid dues binding individuals in the room, perceiving unpaid contracts as taut, strained lines of tension.
    • Margin Intuition: The user experiences an innate, mathematical confidence—an instinctual awareness of true market equilibrium, fair exchange margins, and imminent financial desperation in nearby traders.
    • Fraud Aversion: Deliberate commercial deception or fraudulent intent directed at the wielder causes a sudden, icy knot of warning to tighten behind the brow.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight: Observers see the bearer fall into a brief, rhythmic chanting trance while tracing a coin down the bone rod. The citrine tip abruptly ignites with a warm, steady lantern-like amber glow, and the gilded notches gleam brightly along the polished ox-rib. The air around the user shimmers faintly with a geometric, golden heat-haze that briefly illuminates nearby ledgers and coin-purses.
  • Hearing: Those standing close catch a crisp, comforting sound like cascading coins or the gentle stroke of a metal stylus against an abacus, cutting through ambient market chatter with an oddly calming rhythm.
  • Smell: The immediate space fills with the dry, reassuring fragrance of clean parchment, hot sealing wax, and polished metal, momentarily masking the odors of livestock dung, sweat, and street mud.
  • Taste: Bystanders standing within a yard of the wand may notice a subtle, dry metallic coolness lingering in the back of the throat.
  • Touch: The immediate draft around the bearer becomes noticeably dry and pleasantly warm, making the air feel still, settled, and serious, like stepping into a private banking vault.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Commercial Solemnity: Those in negotiation feel an abrupt, psychic gravity—a subconscious urge to treat bargains seriously and weigh words with care.
    • Exposure Dread: Anyone actively trying to pass clipped coin, short weights, or forged papers experiences an uncomfortable, prickling panic, feeling as if their inner ledger has been placed on an open scale.

Positives

  • Total Fraud Immunity: Assay of the Honest Metal guarantees the user cannot be duped by clipped coinage, lead-weighted ingots, or plated base metals, protecting personal and party funds from street swindles.
  • Flawless Appraisal & Recordkeeping: Ledger’s Equilibrium provides consistent advantages in assessing the value of unworked goods, detecting concealed cargo spoil, and balancing accounts without calculation errors.
  • Market Foresight: Market Weft Divination provides actionable economic foreknowledge of local trade surpluses, hoarding, and price shifts across a ten-mile radius, maximizing profits before competitors react.
  • Negotiation Dominance: Avarice-Tension Glance and Liquidate Impasse allow the user to read an adversary’s absolute limits, break deadlocked disputes, and soothe hostility without drawing steel.
  • Contractual Enforcement: Debt-Weight Anchor imposes a literal, metaphysical drag on oath-breakers and defaulting debtors, making betrayal mechanically punishing and easily tracked.

Negatives

  • 5% Burnout Risk: Whenever an active ability concludes, rolling a 1 on a d20 permanently fractures the citrine crystal and tarnishes the electrum notches, rendering the item an inert piece of bone until costly repairs are made.
  • Conspicuous Mercantile Glow: The bright amber illumination and distinct metallic chime make covert appraisal impossible in dim rooms, instantly tipping off experienced thieves, cutpurses, or rival factors that a magical audit is underway.
  • No Lethal Combat Utility: Beyond serving as an improvised club, the wand provides no offensive weapon profiles, kinetic barriers, or protective armor, leaving the user completely reliant on guards or mundane allies during outright violence.
  • Trance Vulnerability: Major divinations require a full minute of focused counting and meditation, leaving the wielder distracted and vulnerable to physical ambush or pickpocketing while reading the market weave.

Crafting Recipe: Carving and Inlaying the Gilt-Bone Tally-Wand

Materials Needed

  • 1 dense, intact rib bone of a mature pack-ox (at least 10 inches long, sourced from a draft beast that died of natural age in honest labor)
  • 4 grains of high-purity leaf-gold (beaten paper-thin for top inlay)
  • 3 grains of refined electrum leaf (balanced silver-gold alloy for the lower counting tracks)
  • 1 intact Tier 1 magic crystal (uncut, citrine-yellow hue, certified free of internal stress fractures)
  • 14 inches of fine-gauge annealed brass wire (for fashioning the protective crystal cage and apical collar)
  • 18 inches of hand-spun lamb’s wool cord (dyed deep saffron using true crocus stamens, braided into a wrist loop)
  • 1 ounce of bone-and-metal adhesive mastic (compounded from rendered hoof collagen and clarified pine resin)
  • 1 sacrificial commercial focus: 1 authenticated municipal assay touchstone, 1 certified guild bank token, or 1 pristine trade-weight coin (ground, broken, or consumed during the awakening)
  • 2 fluid ounces of distilled volcanic spring water or virgin wellspring runoff (harvested via a fluid collector)

Tools Required

  • 1 set of precision bone-carving chisels, micro-gouges, and fine-toothed bone rasps
  • 1 set of agate burnishers and gilding mops (for laying and seating the metal leaf)
  • 1 small brass-working mandrel, wire-bending round pliers, and wire snips
  • 1 ceramic resin crucible and alcohol spirit burner (for warming the bone mastic without scorching the inlay)
  • 1 Fluid Collector (for drawing, measuring, and injecting vaporized mineral essences)
  • 1 balance scale and calibrated assay weights (to ensure absolute symmetry of the counting notches)

Skill Requirements

  • Mercantilism / Appraisal: Level 3 or higher (essential for selecting bone imbued with unblemished labor-debt and verifying the purity of the electrum and gold leaf)
  • Arcane Crafting / Seiðr Runework: Level 2 or higher (required to engrave the latent mathematical lattices and bind the economic-resonance circuit between bone and stone)
  • Bone-Working / Lapidary Gilding: Level 1 or higher (ensures the structural stability of the marrow channel and seamless seating of the metal foils)

Crafting Steps

  • Bone Preparation and Cleansing: Clean the weathered ox-rib thoroughly. Boil it in distilled well water infused with wood ash to strip all lingering marrow fats and organic grease, then sun-bleach it across three dry days until the surface turns ivory-white. Polish the bone using finely ground pumice and oil until it achieves a smooth, non-porous satin texture.
  • Sizing and Marrow Capping: Trim the ox rib to exactly ten inches in length. Plug the hollow porous end-channels using dense plugs whittled from petrified pine, leveling them flush with the bone tips using a flat rasp.
  • Carving the Tally Tracks: Using a straightedge and balance markers, measure and carve sixteen equidistant calculation notches along the convex outer ridge of the bone. On the flanks of the rod, score fine, hairline mathematical lattices—interlocking geometric runes representing credit, debit, balance, and assay. Drill a clean, countersunk lanyard hole through the base.
  • Laying the Electrum and Gold Leaf: Warm the carved tally notches over the spirit burner and brush them with a thin wash of bone mastic. Using the gilding mop, press the electrum leaf into the base of each notch, burnishing it down firmly. Lay the pure leaf-gold directly over the electrum, using the agate burnisher to weld the metals into a bright, dual-layer metallic inlay flush with the bone face.
  • Forming the Apical Brass Cage: Using the wire-bending pliers and mandrel, twist the annealed brass wire into an open-air lattice cage featuring four vertical ribs and an interlocking circular collar. Test the fit over the uncut citrine-yellow crystal, ensuring the stone is cradled securely without obscuring its natural facets.
  • Seating the Citrine Focus: Coat the tip of the ox-bone wand with heated pine mastic. Press the brass collar down over the bone apex until it grips the plugged end tightly. Insert the citrine-yellow Tier 1 crystal into the brass cage, bending the top wire prongs inward to permanently mechanically lock the stone over the bone’s marrow axis.
  • Infusing the Economic Vapor: Place the sacrificial assay touchstone or trade token into the ceramic crucible alongside two fluid ounces of distilled spring water. Heat the mixture over the spirit burner until it boils into a dense, mineral-rich steam carrying the metaphysical weight of trade. Using the Fluid Collector, draw the heated vapor and force-inject it through the base lanyard hole, through the porous inner bone grain, and out around the brass-caged citrine.
  • Rigging the Lanyard Loop: Pass the braided saffron-dyed lamb’s wool cord through the base hole, forming a reinforced wrist lanyard. Whip-bind the cord ends using fine brass wire and coat the knot in melted pine mastic to prevent fraying.
  • Conducting the Seiðr Binding Ritual: Sit in undisturbed meditation upon a clean counting table or ledger desk. Enter a focused Seiðr trance, softly chanting the cadence of the scales while drawing an authenticated silver coin down all sixteen gilded notches from base to tip. The crafting is complete when the citrine crystal pulses with a steady amber glow, the gold notches radiate a warm metallic heat, and a faint chime of falling coin rings out from the polished bone.

Straight Rib and Weft of False Silver

Now this is the long-drawn mouth-record that was scratched down upon grease-scraped hides by the scribe-priests of the Salt-Reach, who took it from the mouth-babble of the river-runners, who themselves found it cut into the black stones of the sunken pillar-market before the sea drank the old towns. It speaks of the earliest trading-turn, when coins did not yet have the bearded faces of king-monsters stamped upon their cheeks, and when silver was weighed only against the dry beans of the wild carob.

In those suns, at the three-fork crossing where the muddy Oor-River meets the great cold spine of the Grey Bogs, sat the trading-mound of Kjar-Vatn. It was a place of high noise, where sheep-drovers, fur-cutters from the hemlock hills, and copper-diggers from the dry-pits did meet to swap skin for salt, and tallow for grain.

Among these folk walked an elder man whose name-noise was Orm of the Bent-Cart. Orm was neither a broad-shouldered striker of iron nor a chief who wore five fur cloaks at the feast-fire. He was only a clerk-man who sat upon a three-legged stool of peeled alder. For sixty winters, Orm had led his great white ox, which was named Skuf. Skuf was an ox of great patience and thick bone, whose horns were tipped with pine-pitch to turn the horn-flies, and whose broad neck had pulled three thousand wagon-loads of salted river-fish and red barley across the rock-passes without once kicking a wagon-spoke or refusing the mud.

When the winter of the Great White Wolf fell upon Kjar-Vatn, Skuf’s breath did grow thin like wood-smoke on a still marsh. The great ox laid his chin upon a bundle of sweet-clover and gave up his spirit to the grass-mothers. Orm did not sell the flesh to the tripe-boilers, nor did he cast the bones to the town-dogs. He buried the meat beneath an elder oak, but from the right side of the beast’s chest, he did take the longest rib-bone—a straight, dense stave of ivory-white marrow-wood that had borne the heavy leather yoke for half a lifetime of honest hauling.

Now, into Kjar-Vatn there rode a foreign factor whose tongue was greasy with honey-words, whose chest was wrapped in boiled calf-skin dyed with crushed sea-bugs, and whose wagon-train was guarded by twelve men with curved bronze cleavers. His name was Master Malgret the Fat-Scale. Malgret did not bring true mountain silver from the deep seams. He brought chests of poured ingots that were sweet to the eye, glittering like the frozen skin of a pond under the moon, but within their soft bellies he had folded the lead of the chimney-pipes and the dross of the tin-pots.

With this false white metal, Malgret did buy up the winter-grain of the poor crofters. He bought the dried salmon of the river-weavers. He bought the fleece of the lamb-girls for two bits of white-metal per basket, laughing into his beard as he filled his ten iron-strapped wains, while the folk of the trading-mound went back to their turf-huts holding lumps of dead stone that would turn green and spit grease in the smith’s pot.

Orm of the Bent-Cart saw the women weeping into their empty grain-bins. His heart became heavy like wet bog-turf. He took the white rib-bone of Skuf to his small table. For nine days of mist, he did boil the bone in ash-water until not a speck of oil did taint its pores. With a small knife of cold-hammered meteoric flint, he cut sixteen notches along the bone’s belly, and between the notches he scratched the ancient web-runes of the Seiðr—the counting-trance that links the hand that sows the seed to the mouth that eats the bread.

From an old trader from the southern desert, Orm had traded a pebble of sun-citrine, yellow like the fat of a summer capon. At the tip of Skuf’s rib, Orm fashioned a small basket of yellow wire and locked the yellow stone within it. Around the tail of the stave, he braided a cord of sheep-fleece dyed with the yellow-orange roots of the ditch-crocus.

When the tenth day broke, Malgret the Fat-Scale sat upon an ox-hide chair in the middle of the marketplace, surrounded by his cleaver-men. Before him stood the head-men of the village, preparing to sign away the timber-rights to the elder cedar-grove for twelve heavy cakes of Malgret’s shining silver.

Orm stepped through the mud. His boots were broken and his knees did crack, but in his right hand he carried the ox-bone.

“Hold the wax-tablet, head-men,” Orm spoke, and his voice was dry like parchment falling across a stone floor. “The meat has been eaten, but the weight of the debt is crooked. Let the dead ox judge the weight of the living coin.”

Malgret laughed until his belly-flaps shook like pudding in a skin. “What is this beggar who brings a dog’s gnaw-stick to the weighing-bench? My silver has passed the fires of the coastal kings! Out of the lane, grey-beard, or my guards shall carve you into soup-meat!”

Orm did not yell. He did not pull an iron dirk from his sleeve. He only sat down upon the damp gravel of the lane, drew his thumb down the sixteen notches of Skuf’s rib, and began to sing the soft, flat, counting-hum of the elder weavers—a song that sounds like the rattling of dry beans in a clay jug.

Clack-chime, clack-chime, clack-chime went the bone in Orm’s hand.

The sun-citrine in its brass cage did not shoot lightning, but it woke like an ember in an ash-pit. A thick, warm amber light, heavy as boiled cider, poured out of the stone and crawled along the sixteen electrum notches. A pale, golden geometric grid—thin like spider-silk and straight like a mason’s cord—fanned out across the mud, passing under the tables, through the boots of the crowd, and straight into the iron chests of Master Malgret.

The moment the amber web touched the twelve cakes of silver resting on the scale, the tally-wand in Orm’s hand let out a sound like a cracked bell dropping upon frozen gravel—a sour, spitting, metallic shriek that caused the horses to kick their traces and the village dogs to howl.

Before the eyes of the two hundred people gathered in the market, the shining silver cakes did sweat. The thin white wash of real bullion curled back like peeling birch-bark, revealing the black, greasy, foul-smelling pig-lead beneath. The false coin that Malgret had paid to the river-wives for their salmon turned to soot and grey slime in their palms, falling between their fingers like dead worms.

“Liar-coin!” roared the village smith, swinging his round hammer. “He has bought our children’s food with roof-scraps!”

Malgret’s face went white like curdled goat-milk. He yelled to his twelve cleaver-men: “Strike down the old bonesman! Seize the wagons! We ride for the salt-ford!”

The armed men raised their bronze choppers and lunged toward Orm. But Orm did not stand. He raised the tally-wand above his white head and rapped its blunt ivory end once against the oak rim of Malgret’s lead-laden wagon, chanting the ancient debt-word: Toll-Gjald.

A dull shockwave, smelling of old parchment and cold iron scales, rolled through the mud. The twelve sell-swords did not fall down with blood on their shirts, but their feet became heavy like lead weights were tied to their calves. Their weapons dragged down into the mud as if their arms were made of wet river-clay. They could not lift their knees; they could only lean upon their bronze blades, panting and groaning, crushed under the unseen metaphysical burden of sixty stolen transactions.

Malgret himself tried to climb up onto his wagon-seat, but the air around the lead ingots had grown thick like warm pitch. The weight of his own greed pulled him backward, pinning him flat upon the dirt beneath the rear wheels of his own cart, unable to rise, his fat tongue flapping against his teeth like a landed trout.

Orm rose from his three-legged stool. He walked to the scale, carrying Skuf’s rib. He picked up one of Malgret’s lead bricks and tapped it with the yellow crystal. The wand chimed low and true, divining the raw, unwashed truth of the metal: “Four parts dirt,” Orm declared to the crowd, “nine parts common pot-lead, and only one whisper of silver dust washed across the crust to cheat the eye of the hungry.”

The bailiffs of Kjar-Vatn did not kill Malgret. With Orm’s wand resting upon the council-table, they held the merchant in the stockade until he had unlocked his iron secret-chest, hidden beneath the wagon’s false floorboards, which contained forty jars of pure, un-cut gold dust from the southern washes. Under the steady amber glow of the tally-wand, every single pinch of dust was weighed against the dried fish, the malted grain, and the wool of the poor folk, measure for measure, balance for balance, until every house had its bread-price back three-fold.

When the ledger was clear and the sixteen notches on the rib-bone were satisfied, Orm lifted the wand. The crushing weight fell from the limbs of the mercenaries, who threw their bronze blades into the river and ran for the hills like whipped dogs. Malgret was given one blind mule and an empty skin of water, and was turned out into the high bogs to chew grass-roots.

When Orm reached his eightieth winter and felt his own breath growing thin, he did not pass the bone to his kin as silver or gold. He carried it to the guild-bench of the market-stewards. “Take this stick of old Skuf,” he said, before laying down to his sleep. “Never let a market open without its tapping, for men are small and their eyes are easily blinded by the shine of grease. But the bone knows the weight of the furrow, and it never lies to the scale.”

The Moral of the Story: True wealth is not measured by the hollow, glittering sheen of metal that can be melted and faked by the cunning hands of greedy men, but by the honest weight of labor, obligation, and trust that binds one person to another; he who seeks to cheat the world with false balances will find that his own stolen debts will become a crushing stone upon his neck, while he who walks with an upright ledger will discover that even a dry, unadorned ox-bone carries more enduring power, protection, and true authority than an entire wagon-train of poisoned silver.
