Search 304 of the Dauntless Sight Gorget

Lore

  • In the martial lineages of Saṃsāra, most search magic practitioners believe uncovering hidden truths requires retreating into safe observation, hiding behind scrying bowls, or whispering gentle divinations from a careful distance; however, the vanguard scouts of the Iron Heart Order established that secrets are most cleanly cut open by stepping straight toward them.
  • Design 304 was first forged in the frontline foundries of the Lion-Vanguard—a knightly fellowship of shock-pioneers and breach-scouts who maintained that concealed perils, lurking horrors, and buried ambushes only hold power over those who shrink away from them.
  • The gorget functions upon the metaphysical doctrine of “confrontational revelation”: it does not reveal secrets to the timid or cautious, but ignites when its wearer deliberately places themselves in harm’s way, turning raw physical gallantry and forward momentum into divinatory clarity.
  • When strapped about the throat of an avatar who willingly steps to the front rank, stares down monstrous odds, or volunteers to cross an untested threshold, the metal plates warm with eager, ringing vibrations, guiding the wearer’s gaze directly toward whatever lethal ambush or hidden danger is waiting to spring.
  • Veteran avatars warn that wearing the collar stirs an irrepressible, pounding urge to lead from the front, causing the bearer’s voice to ring like an iron horn and making cowardly hesitation feel physically choking.

Description

  • The item is a two-piece flared neck collar of blackened, heat-tempered river-iron, roughly six inches across, featuring raised, riveted flanges along the throat rim that bear the notched bite-marks and hammer scars of past frontline skirmishes.
  • Set flush into the central chest-tab of the collar is a Tier 1 magic crystal: an uncut, raw nugget of fiery almandine pyrope garnet, shot through with bold crimson needles that flare with a bright, ember-red pulse whenever the wearer’s pulse quickens in the presence of danger.
  • The interior of the collar is lined with thick, boiled ox-hide dyed with crushed madder root, stitched tight with sinew thread to cushion the clavicles against blunt impacts.
  • Fastening the back plates together is a thick, square-tongued bronze buckle fitted with two dangling, clinking iron rings that ring with a sharp, martial clang whenever the wearer takes an aggressive, forward stride.
  • Across the front flared rim, an ancient script is roughly chisel-carved into the iron: “Step Forth and Look.”
  • The gorget continuously radiates a faint, crisp scent of hot woodsmoke, struck flint, oiled harness leather, and fresh pine pitch.

Passive Magic

  • Vanguard’s Piercing Gaze:
    • While the avatar is physically leading the marching order or standing in the front line of an engagement, their visual focus sharpens against hostile deceit. The user gains an edge on checks to detect concealed enemies, rigged tripwires, and covered pit traps within 20 feet, as hidden threats catch a subtle crimson glint reflected from the central garnet.
  • Dauntless Heartbeat:
    • The heat of the raw garnet anchors the wearer’s composure against terror. The avatar is completely immune to non-magical intimidation or mundane morale shock, and gains an edge on saving throws against magical fear, despair, or supernatural dread while moving toward an enemy.
  • Scent of Struck Flint:
    • When worn openly, the collar discharges a sharp, invigorating scent of burning pine and struck spark whenever a hostile entity within 30 feet prepares to spring an ambush, fire a missile from stealth, or trigger a lethal trap.

Active Magic

  • The Unflinching Glare:
    • Action Cost: One standard action.
    • Verbal / Casting Requirement: The avatar snaps their chin up, taps the central iron plate with an armored fist, and shouts: “Show your fangs or yield the way!”
    • Effect: The garnet erupts in a sweeping fan of deep crimson light out to a 30-foot cone. Any concealed, camouflaged, or magically cloaked creature within the area must succeed on a Will/Focus check or have their outline painted in a blazing fiery aura for 1 minute, preventing them from hiding and negating all concealment benefits against incoming attacks.
    • Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.
  • Bold Stride of Discovery:
    • Action Cost: One standard action (or used as part of a charge/stride).
    • Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wearer marches deliberately forward at least 15 feet into an unexplored chamber, darkened hallway, or fog-covered clearing without stopping.
    • Effect: As the boots hit the ground, the collar sends an acoustic-magical shockwave through the floor. The exact physical location of every concealed threshold, pressure plate, and hidden alcove within 25 feet resonates with a low, metallic chime that only the avatar can hear, revealing their mechanisms clearly.
    • Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.
  • Rallying Beacon of Truth:
    • Action Cost: One standard action.
    • Verbal / Casting Requirement: The avatar plants their feet, grasps the flared edges of the gorget with both hands, and exhales a booming battle roar.
    • Effect: For 1 minute, the gorget projects a steady, 20-foot aura of warm, crimson dawnlight centered on the user. Within this sphere, magical darkness is dispelled, illusions of phantom enemies are rendered transparent and harmless, and all allies inside the light gain an edge on saves against fear and charm effects as long as they stay behind the avatar’s vanguard position.
    • Cooldown: Usable once per in-game day.

    • Freebooters, roaming adventurers, and unaffiliated avatars pay the full price of 25 silver coins.
    • Renowned war-scouts, mercenary captains, or avatars carrying a recognized Camp-Bivouac Token receive the 10% tier discount (paying 22 silver and 5 copper coins at Tier 1; 20 silver coins at Tier 2).
    • The trophy trader slaps the collar down on a rough plank table, daring the buyer to strap it on and step out into the muddy alley to feel its heartbeat surge.
    • Selling Procedure and Trade Log: The trader inspects the river-iron for battle-dents, confirms the ox-hide stitching has not rotted away, and checks that the buckle pins are straight.
    • Buybacks return the standard 10% tier value of the 25 silver baseline (paying 2 silver and 5 copper coins at Tier 1; 5 silver coins at Tier 2), paid out in battered coins and scrawled into a grease-spotted receipt ledger.

Tactical Roleplay of the Dauntless Sight-Gorget Across the Environments of Saṃsāra

  • Subterranean Crypts, Ancient Catacombs, and Sealed Vaults:
    • Environmental Context: Narrow corridors of cold, damp ashlar masonry, stagnant air thick with tomb dust, pitch-black intersections, covered pit deadfalls, and silent undead lying in wait behind false slab-doors.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Taking the absolute front of the party’s formation, the avatar deliberately strides forward into the unmapped dark. Through Vanguard’s Piercing Gaze, the moment the avatar’s foot hovers near a flagstone rigged with counterweight spikes, the central garnet catches a glint of red light along the hairline tension wire, allowing the wearer to plant their heel firmly on safe masonry and raise an armored arm to halt the marching line.
      • When a resting ghoul pack or tomb-guardian prepares a spring-strike from the darkness above, the gorget’s Scent of Struck Flint flares into the avatar’s nostrils with a burst of crisp pine smoke, signaling the user to duck their head, let the attacker’s claws scrape uselessly across the hardened river-iron collar, and retaliate before surprise can be established.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Arriving at a massive, unbroken mausoleum chamber suspected of housing secret vaults and recessed crypts, the avatar initiates Bold Stride of Discovery, marching fifteen paces directly into the center of the dust. The impact of their tread sends a resonant acoustic hum through the floorboards, causing three concealed wall alcoves and a sunken bone-chute to chime with a clear metallic ring, exposing the dungeon’s layout immediately.
      • When shadowy specters or crypt-crawlers linger in magical gloom along the ceiling vaults, the avatar plants their boots and activates The Unflinching Glare. Roaring a martial challenge, the collar erupts in a 30-foot fan of brilliant scarlet radiance, painting the clinging lurkers in fiery crimson outlines that negate their camouflage and turn them into clear targets for the vanguard’s blades.
  • Sunken Swamps, Reed Marshes, and Stagnant Fenlands:
    • Environmental Context: Knee-deep stagnant muck, misty fog-banks, deceptive patches of quick-bog, and predatory marsh-stalkers submerged completely beneath murky water and duckweed.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Slogging through knee-deep marsh water where monstrous ambushers hunt by waiting motionlessly under the surface, the wearer relies on Dauntless Heartbeat. The steady, warming pulse of the pyrope garnet against the jugular vein prevents paralyzing panic when the water suddenly ripples with predatory intent, keeping the warrior’s grip steady on their polearm.
      • As the avatar wades ahead of the expedition, the sudden reek of struck spark cuts through the rotten sulfur gas of the marsh, alerting the user to an impending serpent-lunge from the high reeds before the beast can clamp onto an unsuspecting party member.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • To pierce a supernatural fog-bank veiling a bog-witch’s sunken lair, the avatar steps out onto a half-submerged log and unleashes Rallying Beacon of Truth. A 20-foot sphere of warm crimson dawnlight bursts from the collar, cutting through the unnatural gloom, melting away phantasmal decoys of drowning victims, and fortifying the courage of allies shivering in the water behind them.
      • Confronting submerged aquatic predators that refuse to surface, the avatar executes The Unflinching Glare straight down into the murky pool. The sweeping cone of ruby energy illuminates the muddy water, outlining the submerged predators in glaring crimson fire and forcing them to either break cover or be speared through the shallows.
  • Mountain Passes, Jagged Gorges, and High Scree Slopes:
    • Environmental Context: Narrow switchbacks carved into sheer cliffs, howling crosswinds, blinding snow-squalls, loose shale, and cliff-climbing raiders positioned above for rockslide ambushes.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Walking the sheer outer lip of an exposed precipice to lead the pack animals, the user remains shielded by the river-iron collar against sudden sniper fire. An archer shooting from an elevated crag finds the target’s throat protected by hardened plate, while the deflection grants the wearer immediate directionality to roll behind cover.
      • When crossing an unstable scree slope, the gorget’s Vanguard’s Piercing Gaze reflects faint crimson glints off loose keystones and precariously balanced boulders, allowing the point-scout to select solid granite footing and guide the group past treacherous rockfall triggers.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Leading a charge across a contested rope-bridge or narrow stone causeway held by entrenched skirmishers, the avatar invokes Bold Stride of Discovery. Stamping aggressively across the span, the resonant vibration maps hidden trip-cords tied to rockfall nets overhead, allowing the avatar to sever the rigging with a single upward stroke of a greatsword before the trap can drop.
      • When mountain bandits use the howling wind and falling snow to mask their advance along the cliff face, the avatar unleashes a booming battle shout and snaps their chin high. The sweeping crimson brilliance of The Unflinching Glare exposes the bandits clinging to the rock face, stripping away their environmental concealment and opening them to ranged retaliation.
  • Crowded Night Bazars, Smuggler Wharves, and Urban Slums:
    • Environmental Context: Labyrinthine shantytown alleys, dense crowds of dockhands and carters, shadowed rooftops, hanging laundry lines, and concealed rooftop cutthroats armed with heavy crossbows.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Escorting a vulnerable diplomat or valuable cargo through an alley known for rooftop crossbow strikes, the avatar marches squarely in the front. The passive Scent of Struck Flint warns the user of an assassin drawing a string on a balcony overhead, enabling the avatar to interpose their own armored body, catch the bolt upon the flared lip of the gorget, and keep the charge moving without loss of momentum.
      • When cornered in a blind alley by thugs attempting to intimidate the party into surrendering their purse, Dauntless Heartbeat holds the user entirely immune to their posturing and threats, projecting an unyielding martial presence that rattles the thugs’ confidence instead.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Suspecting a warehouse district houses a concealed counterfeit mint or smuggler’s bolt-hole, the avatar performs Bold Stride of Discovery down the center of the cobblestone lane. The heavy strike of iron-shod boots rings through the paving stones, triggering an audible metallic chime beneath a stack of empty fish crates where a hidden cellar trapdoor is camouflaged.
      • If a fleeing cutpurse attempts to vanish into a darkened, maze-like dead end using magical shadow-cloaks, the avatar triggers The Unflinching Glare. The piercing ruby fan blankets the alley, illuminating the thief’s silhouette in unmistakable glowing embers and driving them into the open where city watchmen or companions can apprehend them.

Perception of Activation:

  • Visual (Sight)
    • User’s Perspective: The forward field of view sharpens with stark, high-contrast clarity as ambient shadows seem to peel back. Deep within darkened doorways, behind arrow-slits, or beneath hidden deadfall seams, a vibrant, ember-like crimson outline burns brightly, outlining lurking shapes and tripwires in sharp relief against the mundane scenery.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The raw almandine pyrope garnet set into the chest tab suddenly flares with a blinding, furnace-hot crimson brilliance. Thin, lance-like beams of scarlet light project forward across the wearer’s breastplate and shoulders, painting their jawline and eyes in harsh, glowing war-red highlights while casting long, dramatic shadows behind them.
    • Positives: Clearly distinguishes camouflaged ambushers, concealed floor latches, and tripwires in total darkness without requiring an open flame torch.
    • Negatives: The stark red flare completely destroys the user’s natural night vision for several seconds after it dims, and the glaring beacon makes stealth impossible.
  • Auditory (Sound)
    • User’s Perspective: Ambient background noise—dripping water, wind, distant echoes—drops into a muffled, low-pass hum. In its place, a rhythmic, deep bronze heartbeat reverberates through the jawbone, accompanied by a clear, metallic chime whenever an aggressive forward stride brings the wearer within reach of a concealed mechanism.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers hear an unmistakable, sharp clang like a heavy hammer striking cold iron, followed by a resonant, low-frequency hum that vibrates the air within several paces of the wearer.
    • Positives: Directional acoustic cues instantly signal the proximity of concealed dangers even if the avatar’s line of sight is momentarily blocked.
    • Negatives: The internal reverberation muffles soft acoustic details, making it difficult to overhear whispered conversations or subtle environmental cues like trickling gas.
  • Tactile (Touch)
    • User’s Perspective: A sudden wave of dry, searing heat floods through the boiled ox-hide lining into the clavicles and sternum, feeling like pressing a hot iron kettle directly against the chest. Far from burning the flesh, it accelerates the pulse and floods the muscles with a surge of steady, unyielding kinetic readiness.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The wearer visibly squares their shoulders and straightens their back; small waves of rising thermal distortion shimmer off the river-iron plates, warming the air around them like an open hearth.
    • Positives: The intense warmth staves off hypothermia, numbing cold, and muscle stiffness in freezing ruins or glacial caves.
    • Negatives: Generates profuse sweating along the neck and chest, accelerating physical dehydration during sustained exploration.
  • Olfactory (Smell)
    • User’s Perspective: The stale, moldering stench of ancient corridors is instantly scorched away by a crisp, biting smell of struck flint, burning pine pitch, charcoal smoke, and oiled harness leather.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Those trailing behind the vanguard detect a sudden, dry draft smelling strongly of a military blacksmith’s forge and fresh campfire smoke.
    • Positives: Instantly overwhelms and neutralizes airborne miasmas, nauseating rot smells, and subtle airborne paralytic spores.
    • Negatives: The acrid pitch smell clings stubbornly to hair and tunics, making the wearer easy to track by scent-hunting beasts.
  • Gustatory (Taste)
    • User’s Perspective: A harsh, dry tang of cold iron filings and copper coats the tongue, accompanied by a faint flavor of wood-ash at the back of the palate.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The wearer sets their jaw firmly, swallowing hard to clear the sudden dryness in their throat.
    • Positives: Immediately shocks the nervous system awake, banishing drowsiness, magical grogginess, and dry-mouthed hesitation.
    • Negatives: Leaves a persistent, chalky iron aftertaste that dulls the palate for hours afterward.
  • Extra-Sensory: Vanguard’s Compulsion (Confrontational Urge)
    • User’s Perspective: Hesitation feels like a physical chokehold around the throat, while moving deliberately into danger feels frictionless, liberating, and natural. The unseen perils ahead register not as frightening unknowns, but as personal insults that demand immediate confrontation and crossing.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Companions feel an irresistible psychological current pulling their focus toward the wearer’s back, finding it instinctively reassuring to fall in line directly behind their stride.
    • Positives: Bestows total immunity to panic, hesitation, and non-magical morale collapse when leading an assault.
    • Negatives: Generates an aggressive impatience that makes patient retreats, diplomatic waiting, or defensive holding patterns feel agonizing.
  • Extra-Sensory: Hearth-Shield Resonance (Martial Clarity)
    • User’s Perspective: The physical environment is perceived through a lens of tactical integrity. Weak masonry, false partition walls, and disguised pit traps feel flimsy, fragile, and hollow to the avatar’s awareness, practically begging to be kicked down or shattered by an armored boot.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Foes waiting in hidden alcoves or ambush positions experience a sudden, creeping sense of exposure, as though an invisible broadsword has just tapped against their hiding spot.
    • Positives: Effortlessly exposes the structural weak points of secret doors, barred barricades, and hidden ambush nests.
    • Negatives: The heightened confidence can tempt the user to trigger complex traps deliberately rather than pausing to disarm them carefully.

Crafting Recipe: Search 304 of the Dauntless Sight-Gorget

  • Materials Needed:
    • 2 plates of heavy, low-phosphorus river-iron billet (each approximately 8 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3/16 inch thick).
    • 1 Tier 1 magic crystal: an uncut, raw nugget of fiery almandine pyrope garnet (roughly the size of a pigeon’s egg, shot through with deep crimson needle inclusions).
    • 1 piece of thick, vegetable-tanned ox-hide leather (approximately 10 by 6 inches).
    • 4 ounces of crushed madder root extract (boiled with iron mordant for a deep blood-red dye).
    • 12 feet of waxed stag-sinew cord.
    • 6 heavy annealed iron rivets and burrs.
    • 1 square-tongued forged bronze buckle with twin integral iron jingling-rings.
    • 1 length of oiled cowhide strapping (1 inch wide, 14 inches long).
    • 2 tablespoons of boiled pine pitch blended with wood-ash.
    • 1 small vial of vinegar mixed with soot (for the dark acid etch).
  • Tools Required:
    • 1 Coal-fired armorer’s forge and bellows.
    • 1 Heavy anvil with a rounded bick and swage block.
    • 1 Set of blacksmith’s shaping hammers, cross-peen hammers, and cold chisels.
    • 1 Hand drill (breast drill) or iron hot-punch with drift.
    • 1 Leather round-knife, stitching awl, and harness clamps.
    • 1 Small lapidary graver and stone-setting punch.
    • 1 Iron slack-tub filled with cold water mixed with crushed pine needles.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Armorsmithing & Blacksmithing: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to hot-dish the curved river-iron throat plates, raise the flared deflection flanges, and set the retaining rivets without distorting the neck aperture).
    • Lapidary & Gem-Setting: Minimum skill rank of 1 (required to chisel a snug, shock-absorbent bezel in raw iron and secure the brittle pyrope garnet against concussive battlefield impacts).
    • Leatherworking & Saddlery: Minimum skill rank of 1 (required to cut, dye with madder root, boil-harden, and saddle-stitch the ox-hide lining securely beneath the plates).
    • Mind’s Eye Divination / Search Magic (Vanguard & Gallantry Discipline): Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to align the garnet’s optical frequency with frontline confrontational intent and awaken the search-resonance of the collar).
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Forging the Iron Plates and Flanges:
      • Heat the two river-iron billets in the coal forge to a bright cherry red.
      • Use the round horn of the anvil and a swage block to dish the plates into a two-piece articulated collar that rests cleanly over the clavicles and flares outward around the throat.
      • Forge-weld or hot-hammer a raised, thick defensive lip along the upper rim to deflect upward-thrusting blades.
      • Punch four rivet holes along the lower edge and drill the central aperture in the breast tab to seat the garnet stone.
      • Use a cold chisel to roughly carve the four ancient glyphs spelling “Step Forth and Look” across the flared upper rim.
      • Quench the plates in the pine-needle slack tub, then treat them with a warm soot-and-vinegar wash to produce an unreflective, blackened river-iron finish.
    • Fitting the Ox-Hide Lining and Fasteners:
      • Cut the thick ox-hide to mirror the inside curvature of the iron plates, leaving a quarter-inch border to prevent the bare iron from rubbing the neck.
      • Steep the leather in the boiled madder-root dye until saturated deep crimson, then rub it with oil and tallow to keep it flexible yet dense against blunt impacts.
      • Fasten the forged bronze buckle and iron-ring jingler to the rear collar strap using heavy stag-sinew stitching.
      • Align the dried leather lining with the interior of the river-iron plates and drive the six annealed iron rivets through the punched holes, peening the heads flat on the inner face.
    • Seating the Pyrope Garnet Core:
      • Coat the bottom of the central chest aperture with a small bead of boiled pine pitch and wood-ash to cushion the gem against weapon strikes.
      • Press the raw, uncut almandine pyrope garnet firmly into the socket, orienting its natural crystal needles outward toward the forward visual field.
      • Using a lapidary punch and chasing hammer, carefully turn the heavy iron bezel lips over the facets of the garnet, locking the stone into immovable contact with the central iron plate.
    • Vanguard Attunement and Consecration:
      • Fasten the freshly forged gorget securely around your throat, buckling the back strap tight until the ox-hide presses firmly against your collarbones.
      • Seek out an active, untamed frontier—a monster-haunted cavern mouth, a contested breach in a palisade, or a dark, unmapped crypt threshold known to hold traps.
      • Without sending scouts, companions, or probes ahead, march deliberately past the threshold into the dark, planting each foot firmly and allowing the iron buckle-rings to chime with each pace.
      • Strike the iron breastplate hard with your clenched fist, shout a clear, defiant challenge into the gloom, and stand unyielding in the front rank for three uninterrupted minutes.
      • As your pulse surges and confronts the hidden dark without retreating, the pyrope garnet absorbs the raw martial focus, warming against your throat and igniting into its permanent, ember-red frontline search-resonance.

High Breach of Wolf-Throat Pass, Seven Cautious Generals, and Shield-Squire Who Refused to Duck His Chin

In the era when the mountain of Kar-Vash (rendered in the fractured bone-script as “The-Tooth-That-Bites-the-Cloud”) had not yet vomited its stomach of black ash, there lay upon the high pass a terrible, gaping wound of stone called the Wolf-Throat.

Through this narrow throat must pass all the tribute-oxen, the salt-carts, and the great bronze kettles of the Sun-King of Sarn. Yet, for seven winters and seven rainy moons, no cart passed, and no herald blew his horn upon that road, for there had nested in the high cliffs above the gorge the brood of the Night-Stalkers—winged things of blind stone and barbed iron whose hides were the color of wet slate and whose talons were smeared with the venom of ground scorpions.

Now, the King of Sarn summoned before his gilded throne the Seven Cautious Generals of the Turtle Shell.

These were lords of vast reputation and exceedingly high age. They wore heavy bronze plate lined with triple-quilted goose feathers; they sat upon ivory stools behind five rows of wicker pavises, and their beards were greased with goat-lard so they might not catch fire from stray sparks. They spoke only in the third hour after the divination-roosters had ceased to crow, and they never moved a legion without three years of surveying the water-wells.

“Lord of the Sun,” spake the oldest general, whose knees made the sound of dry seed-pods when he bowed. “The Wolf-Throat cannot be forced by foot-soldiers. The cleft is narrow, four spears wide. The slate is slick with moss. The winged devils hang upside down beneath the overhangs; they do not show their heads, nor do their eyes reflect torch-glare. If an army steps into the gorge, great slabs of stone will drop from their hiding-rigs, and the creatures will descend upon our necks from behind the mist. We must build three hundred stone siege-towers at the base, dig twelve leagues of drainage ditches, and wait twenty summers until the beasts perish of dry mange.”

The other six generals nodded their heavy, plumed helmets until their horsehair crests swept the carpet, murmuring: “True, true, caution is the mother of grandfatherhood.”

Now, standing at the rear rank of the hall, bearing the water-jug and the oil-basin, was a ragged, raw-boned frontline shield-squire known in the dialect of the river-marshes as Brand-of-the-Short-Stoppage.

He was not a lord of ivory stools. He possessed no goose-feather gambeson. About his thick throat he wore only a crude collar of blackened river-iron, hammered out on a field-anvil after the crossing of the Red Sump. The throat-plate was dented by sling-stones, the ox-hide lining was stained dark crimson with madder-root and salty neck-sweat, and into the center tab was wedged an uncut, jagged lump of fiery red pyrope garnet that looked like a burning cinder spat from a coal-pit. Dangling from the bronze buckle at his nape were two iron rings that made a sharp, clinking rattle whenever he stepped without bowing.

“Why do you sit here chewing your beards like old sheep?” the boy shouted across the throne room, his voice cracking with the insolent rasp of a camp-soldier. “If the beasts will not come down from the rocks to show their faces, you need only walk under their talons with your chin pointed at the sky! Even a blind butcher can hit an ox if he stands between its horns!”

The Seven Generals gasped so hard their whiskers fluttered.

“Tear his tongue out with fish-hooks!” shouted the second general. “He speaks without measuring the wind! He has not cast sheep-knuckles to read the omens of the pass! Let him be tied to an ox-cart and dragged through the turnip fields!”

“No,” said the Sun-King, who was exceedingly weary of eating parched oats because the spice-wagons could not cross the mountains. “Let the boy go into the Wolf-Throat alone. If the mountain-devils tear his windpipe out, we will only have lost one water-bearer and a dented piece of ditch-iron. If he survives, the Seven Generals shall carry his water-jug for thirty moons.”

And so, upon the first day of the drought-wind, Brand-of-the-Short-Stoppage was driven to the mouth of the terrifying pass.

The Seven Generals sat two leagues behind him upon a high knoll, peering through tubes of polished horn and shielding their bald heads with oiled parasols. Before him, the Wolf-Throat rose like two split slabs of raw obsidian, two hundred cubits tall, drenched in freezing mist, silent as a closed sarcophagus. In the high shadows, nothing moved. Not a wing fluttered; not a pebble rattled. The unseen death lingered in the cleft, invisible, waiting for the clatter of many spears to loose their deadfall boulders.

Brand did not crawl upon his belly like a snake. He did not send ahead a tethered dog with a lantern upon its tail, as the cautious books of the generals commanded.

He took his broad-axe in his right hand. He buckled the river-iron gorget tight against his neck until the madder-red ox-hide bit into his collarbones. He struck his clenched left fist hard against the breast-tab of the collar—CLANG!—and took a heavy, deliberate stride into the center of the gorge.

With that single forward pace, the uncut pyrope garnet against his throat flared with a sudden, violent, furnace-hot crimson spark.

Inside his bones, the boy’s blood did not turn to cold curd; rather, his heartbeat thrummed with the deep, rhythmic clang of a blacksmith striking an anvil. The stale chill of the mountain gorge was blasted away by a crisp, biting smell of struck flint, burning pine pitch, and hot harness-iron that scorched the nostrils of his head.

Clink-clang, clink-clang went the iron rings at the back of his buckle with every forward step.

He did not look down at his boots. He did not crane his neck from side to side like a cornered vole. He marched fifteen full cubits directly into the dead center of the killing-ground, planted his iron-shod heel upon the black rock, and roared up into the shadows:

“I am Brand! My throat is iron! Come down and bite it, or starve like mangy curs in your cracks!”

Then the magic of the gorget surged to meet his insolent stride.

A resonant, acoustic shockwave broke from the bottom of his boots, humming through the bedrock. Fifty paces ahead, beneath an apparently solid shelf of black slate, three hidden release-wedges holding up a ten-ton rockfall vibrated with a loud, metallic ping! that only Brand could hear, revealing the deadfall trap as clearly as if a red flag were planted upon its trigger.

High above, clinging upside down in the jagged recesses where the mountain mist was thickest, forty-four winged slate-stalkers had held their breath for ninety days, invisible to horn-tubes and crystal lenses.

Brand snapped his chin high, tapped the iron collar a second time, and let out a second roar of unyielding defiance.

From the central garnet burst a blinding, thirty-foot fan of deep crimson dawnlight. The sweeping scarlet brilliance did not warm the cold rock; it slashed through the unnatural gloom like a red cleaver. Where the light touched the slick cliffside, the camouflaged beasts could not blend into the wet stone; their grey hides were painted in glaring, furnace-red outlines that smoked with bright sparks.

The ambush was ruined. The unseen had become obvious.

With a chorus of frustrated, ear-splitting shrieks like tearing bronze, the largest of the slate-stalkers—a brute four times the weight of a war-horse—dropped from the ceiling of the cleft, its barbed talons aimed straight at the boy’s neck. It did not drop in silence; the sudden, acrid smell of struck spark and hot iron had flared in Brand’s nostrils half a breath before the dive, warning his marrow.

Brand did not dive into the scree. He did not throw his shield over his crown. He set his legs wide, leaned forward into the strike, and thrust his throat directly toward the falling monster.

The beast’s razor-sharp talon struck the raised, flared lip of the river-iron gorget.

CRACK-SPARK!

The iron held true. The beast’s curved claw split down the middle against the heat-tempered river-iron, deflecting upward with a spray of bright sparks that scorched the creature’s own belly. The monster screamed, thrown off balance by the unyielding rigidity of the collar, its soft, pale under-throat exposed to the sky.

Brand swung his broad-axe upward in the same continuous motion, hewing the beast through its breastbone to the spine.

As the beast crashed dead upon the mossy slate, the crimson light from the boy’s collar did not fade; it flared outward in a wide, twenty-foot ring of warm, unwavering fire. The remaining forty-three slate-stalkers, seeing their hidden nests laid bare, their ambushes revealed, and their alpha cleaved from throat to belly by a creature that had marched directly under their claws without blinking, were seized by an unnatural, shivering terror. The dauntless aura of the gorget broke their savage spirits; they shrieked, launched themselves from their perches, and fled over the snowy crest of the mountain, never to return to the pass.

Brand did not chase them. He wiped the black beast-grease from his axe-blade onto the dead monster’s wing, straightened his neck-plates, and blew a pinch of red garnet-dust from his teeth.

He walked fifteen paces forward, kicked the trip-block of the rockfall with his boot so the loose boulders tumbled harmlessly into the ravine below, and then sat down upon a dry flat stone to unlace his boots.

Two hours later, the Seven Generals of the Turtle Shell arrived at the mouth of the pass, their four thousand spearmen crawling behind them with three rows of wicker shields held high above their helmets.

They found Brand-of-the-Short-Stoppage resting his back against the dead monster, dipping a crust of hard barley-bread into a wooden cup of sour ale, his river-iron collar gleaming dull and cool beneath the mountain sun.

“Where is the army of the enemy?” wheezed the first general, his eyes bulging over his wicker pavise. “Where are the hidden deadfalls? Where are the three leagues of trench-works we must dig?”

“The deadfall is in the ditch,” Brand replied, pointing with his bread-crust. “The beasts are in the high snows, shivering because their hides are too thin for men who look them in the face. And your salt-wagons are three hours late. Carry my water-jug, old men, or go back to your palace and knit shawls from your beards.”

And it is written upon the final fragment of the red mountain-tile that the Sun-King made Brand the Great Warden of the Wolf-Throat, and for sixty years the boy walked the high passes with his chin held high, wearing the dented river-iron collar whose stone burned like an ember whenever danger drew near; while the Seven Generals were commanded to walk behind his horse every spring, carrying his water-jug and sweeping the road with brooms so that the trade-wagons might never again be halted by fear of what lay in the dark.

Moral of the Story

The deepest shadows and deadliest ambushes derive their power not from their own strength, but from the trembling hesitation of those who wait for danger to strike from the dark; for ten thousand years of cautious plotting and careful retreat will never find what an unyielding heart reveals in a single moment, proving that the most piercing divination in the world is not the distant glass of the scholar, but the bold stride of one who wears his throat bare to the spear, marches straight toward the peril, and dares the unseen truth to show its face.
