Lore
- In the rugged highland switchbacks and treacherous gorges of Saṃsāra, managing heavy draught beasts and timber wagons requires more than raw muscle; it demands an elemental pact between driver, beast, and road.
- Highland folklore speaks of the Meurme—the traditional cartwright-shamans and wagon-masters of the Caucasus—who carved braided lash-whips to guide teams of oxen and horses along cliffs where a single broken axle or panic-stricken beast meant a plunge into the abyss.
- The number 349 designates a line of consecrated driving whips woven from hemp, horsehair, and wild mountain grapevine shoots, blessed under the sign of the solar wheel (Borjgali) to ward off roadway evil spirits (Ali and Devi) that lay in wait at crossroads to spook livestock and break wheel hubs.
- In Satsnakheli tradition, driving is regarded as a magical discipline of channeled momentum and physical grounding; a skilled driver does not merely force beasts forward, but binds wagon wheels, draught harnesses, and the soil into one continuous, harmonious path.
- Today, highland caravaners, wagon-wardens, and frontier messengers carry these whips to navigate landslide-prone scree, outrun mountain wolves, and keep their carriages rolling safely through storms and malevolent terrain.
Description
- The weapon is a thirty-inch short driving crop and whip, balanced with a stiff twelve-inch haft carved from seasoned highland hornbeam wood (rtskhila) and terminating in an eighteen-inch flexible lash of braided black horsehair intertwined with dried mountain grapevine fibers.
- The wooden haft is carved with recurring running sun-spiral motifs (Borjgali) and wrapped near the grip in supple, vegetable-tanned oxhide dyed a dusty walnut-brown.
- A Tier 1 magic crystal—a smooth, flat oval cabochon of golden-yellow citrine—is mounted securely into a cast bronze collar set between the wooden handle and the braided lash, pulsing with a gentle, sunlit amber radiance whenever held.
- The pommel ends in a cast bronze fitting shaped into a rolling four-spoked wagon wheel, hollowed through the hub to hold a wrist-loop of braided green woolen cord.
- The lash itself is tipped with a polished copper cracker-bead that lets out a sharp, resonant crack reminiscent of thunder breaking over alpine crags when snapped.
- The entire whip smells of saddle soap, toasted grain, pine pitch, and sun-warmed road dust.

Passive Magic
- Sure-Footed Draught Bond:
- While the wielder holds the whip and operates the reins of any mount, team of beasts, cart, or wagon, the draught animals gain immunity to mundane fear, panic, and sudden spooking (such as from loud noises or snake strikes), and all driving checks made to navigate rough scree, mud, or steep inclines gain a +1 bonus (or roll with advantage).
- Borjgali Axle-Ward:
- The wagon, cart, or chariot driven by the wielder receives a minor protective ward against mechanical failure; wheel spokes, axles, and harness leather gain an effective +2 bonus to durability/hardness against road vibrations, dry rot, and nonmagical wear, preventing sudden axle breaks during high-speed travel.
- Driver’s Reflexive Grip:
- The wielder cannot be involuntarily dislodged, thrown, or knocked from a driver’s bench, saddle, or chariot chassis by sudden stops, sharp turns, or collision impacts while holding the whip.
Activable Magic
- Thunder-Crack of the High Road:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wielder snaps the whip overhead, letting the copper cracker-bead release a concussive, thunderous report that echoes across the road.
- Effect: Draught beasts or mounts pulling the wielder’s vehicle surge with magical momentum, increasing their land movement speed by 10 feet for 1 minute. Simultaneously, hostile beasts, highway predators, or low-level roadblock skirmishers within 15 feet must make a DC 12 Wisdom (or Willpower) saving throw or become startled, suffering a –2 penalty to attack rolls and checks to intercept or chase the vehicle for 1 round.
- Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.
- Hub-Scattering Lash:
- Action Cost: One standard action (can be used as part of a Ram or Sideswipe driving maneuver).
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wielder lashes out at an adjacent vehicle, obstacle, or pursuer trying to board or flank the carriage.
- Effect: The flexible lash crackles with golden kinetic sparks. On a hit against an enemy vehicle’s wheels, harness, or pursuer’s mount, the target must make a DC 12 Dexterity (or Reflex) saving throw. On a failure, the enemy vehicle veers violently (imposing a –2 penalty on driving checks and reducing speed by half for 1 round) or the pursuing rider is pushed back 10 feet, preventing them from matching pace.
- Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.
- Sun-Wheel Pathclearing:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wielder traces a circular sun-wheel gesture in the air with the whip while calling upon the spirits of the highland road.
- Effect: A 10-foot-wide, 30-foot-long straight path directly ahead of the vehicle is magically cleared of minor road obstructions (loose gravel, shallow mud, fallen branches, or road-spikes) for 1 round, treating difficult terrain as normal ground and reducing collision damage from minor roadblocks by half.
- Cooldown: Usable once per day (resets at dawn after the sun crests the eastern peaks).

Tactical Roleplay of the Mountain-Wagoner’s Yoke-Whip Across the Environments of Saṃsāra
- Narrow Mountain Switchbacks and Alpine Scree Passes:
- Environmental Context: High-altitude gravel ledges, yawning ravines, loose shale, sudden rockfalls, biting crosswinds, and predatory cliff-stalkers or highwaymen.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- When a sudden rockfall rattles loose slate across the wagon’s path, Sure-Footed Draught Bond prevents the oxen from bolting off the cliff ledge, while Borjgali Axle-Ward protects the wooden hubs from splitting as the iron tires crash over the debris.
- If an aggressive gust or sudden turn tilts the coach along the precipice, Driver’s Reflexive Grip anchors the wielder firmly to the driver’s box, preventing them from being thrown headlong into the gorge.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Ambushed by cliff-dwelling brigands blocking a narrow hairpin turn, the wielder cracks the whip overhead with Thunder-Crack of the High Road. The booming report startles the ambushers’ mounts and panics the frontline skirmishers, while granting the team a sudden surge of speed to plow straight through the blockade.
- Approaching a rock-strewn hairpin turn choked with landslide gravel, the driver executes Sun-Wheel Pathclearing, smoothing the loose stones into an even track and cutting collision damage in half to maintain downhill momentum.
- Crowded Urban Thoroughfares and Cobblestone Merchant Streets:
- Environmental Context: Dense pedestrian traffic, narrow alleys, tight ninety-degree street corners, runaway merchant barrows, grease-slick stones, and swift thief guilds.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- When cornered in a crowded market square by rival guild wagons attempting to box the carriage in, the driver relies on Driver’s Reflexive Grip and Borjgali Axle-Ward to withstand severe chassis scraping without throwing the pilot or breaking the wheels.
- If footpads fling caltrops or spilled lard across the cobblestones to cause a high-speed wreck, Sun-Wheel Pathclearing sweeps the immediate street ahead clean of hazards, allowing the carriage to brake safely or steer without skidding out of control.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- In a high-speed chase through the lower wards, a rival carriage attempts to ram the avatar’s wagon from the flank. The wielder counters with Hub-Scattering Lash, sending crackling kinetic sparks into the pursuer’s front axle, forcing their chassis to veer sharply into a line of empty fruit crates and halting their pursuit.
- Snapping the copper bead in an echo-heavy city boulevard with Thunder-Crack of the High Road, the concussive sound reverberates off high stone walls, scattering pursuing foot-ruffians and leaving them disoriented while the carriage surges down a side street.
- Flooded Marsh Causeways and Sinking Peat Bogs:
- Environmental Context: Submerged corduroy log roads, thick suction mud, hidden sinkholes, rot-weakened bridge spans, and waterborne raiders or marsh-beasts.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Crossing a half-sunken timber track through deep mire, Sure-Footed Draught Bond keeps the draft horses calm and pulling in unison despite cold water swirling around their bellies, resisting the suction that commonly mires heavy freight wagons.
- As wooden logs rot or snap beneath the wagon’s weight, Borjgali Axle-Ward bolsters the running gear, preventing the carriage from sagging and snapping a spoke in the black mud.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Facing a barricade of water-logged drift-timber and submerged spikes planted by swamp raiders, the wielder traces the sun-wheel with Sun-Wheel Pathclearing, momentarily parting the muddy water and dislodging debris to create a stable thirty-foot lane of firm ground.
- As swamp beasts leap onto the wheel guards to drag the beasts down, the driver strikes with Hub-Scattering Lash, using the whip’s reach and kinetic discharge to knock the attackers back into the deep muck.
- Arid Salt Flats, Desert Dunes, and Sun-Bleached Rutted Tracks:
- Environmental Context: Heat shimmers, blinding glare, deep shifting sand drifts, cracked earth, sudden sink-rut traps, and swift nomadic chariot raiders.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- When mirages and heat delirium make mounts skittish or rebellious, Sure-Footed Draught Bond keeps the beasts focused and obedient to the reins, ignoring sensory distortions across the shimmering white flats.
- Striking deep, hidden wagon-ruts dried hard like iron by the sun, Borjgali Axle-Ward absorbs the brutal mechanical shock that would otherwise shatter standard wooden wagon tongues and hubs.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Pursued by swift dune chariots or desert outriders attempting to cut the traces, the wielder snaps Thunder-Crack of the High Road. The loud crack breaks the predators’ focus, while the sudden speed surge allows the heavier wagon to pull away from flanking attackers across the open flats.
- When a pursuing raider rides alongside to board the driver’s bench, a well-timed strike of Hub-Scattering Lash snaps across the enemy’s harness, throwing their beast out of rhythm and causing their light chariot to fishtail across the sand.

- 1 pinch of dry road dust gathered from an active mountain crossroad.
- Tools Required:
- 1 Draw-knife, wood rasps, and cabinet scrapers.
- 1 Set of fine wood-carving gouges and v-parting chisels (for cutting the Borjgali sun-spiral motifs).
- 1 Bronze-casting crucible, ladle, and jeweler’s chasing hammers.
- 1 Hand-drill with small spoon bits.
- 1 Leather burnisher, awl, and stitching needles.
- 1 Waxed braiding jig or leather-working vice.
- 1 Small iron melting pot and spirit lamp (for warming pitch).
- Skill Requirements:
- Woodcarving and Wheelwright Joinery: Minimum skill rank of 3.
- Leatherworking and Cordwaining (Hair/Fiber Braiding): Minimum skill rank of 2.
- Bronze Casting and Lapidary: Minimum skill rank of 2.
- Mind’s Eye Focusing / Satsnakheli Wayfinding Rituals: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to align the citrine’s kinetic resonance with the Borjgali sun-wheel ward).
- Crafting Steps:
- Shaping and Carving the Haft:
- Plane the hornbeam branch down to a clean twelve-inch tapered haft, leaving a slightly flared grip section and a rounded base tenon to seat into the bronze wheel pommel.
- Use fine gouges to carve three repeating, seven-armed Borjgali sun-spiral motifs in shallow relief along the exposed upper section of the wood.
- Rub the carved wood with raw linseed oil and beeswax to seal the grain against road moisture and grit.
- Casting and Fitting the Bronze Mounts:
- Cast the bronze ferrule collar to match the top diameter of the wooden haft, shaping an open oval bezel on one face to receive the citrine stone.
- Cast the bronze pommel in the form of a four-spoked miniature wagon wheel, drilling a through-hole through the center of the hub for the wrist loop.
- Seat the bronze collar onto the top of the hornbeam haft and the wheel pommel onto the base tenon, securing both in place with warmed pine pitch and small bronze retaining pins.
- Insert the golden citrine cabochon into the collar’s bezel seat, burnishing the bronze lips over the stone until firmly anchored.
- Braiding the Flexible Lash:
- Divide the black horsehair and soaked mountain grapevine fibers into four equal strands, aligning their tapers from thick base to fine tip.
- Intertwine the natural horsehair and vine bark using a tight, four-plait diamond round braid to yield an eighteen-inch tapered whip thong.
- Anchor the thick root of the braided thong into the open upper socket of the bronze ferrule collar, securing it with hot pitch and a hidden cross-pin.
- Thread the fine terminal tip of the braid through the copper cracker-bead, securing it with a double-knotted horsehair whip-knot to produce the resonant thunder-crack upon impact.
- Wrapping the Grip and Wrist-Loop:
- Coat the lower six inches of the wooden handle with a thin layer of pitch adhesive.
- Wind the vegetable-tanned walnut oxhide tightly around the haft in overlapping spirals, burnishing the edges down flush to form a non-slip, weather-resistant grip.
- Braid the green sheep’s wool yarn into a supple loop, threading it through the hub of the bronze wheel pommel and knotting it into an adjustable wrist-cuff.
- Consecration and Way-Ward Awakening:
- Take the completed whip to a mountain crossroads at the hour of noon when the sun stands directly overhead.
- Rub the pinch of crossroad dust over the face of the citrine cabochon while reciting the traditional Meurme prayer of safe passage and unbroken axles.
- Channel mental energy through the Mind’s Eye into the citrine crystal until the stone absorbs the solar heat and glows with an internal amber ember.
- Snap the whip three times over an empty wagon tongue or horse harness: first to the left wheel, second to the right wheel, and third directly down the road ahead. The lash will emit a sharp thunder-crack followed by the permanent scent of ozone, friction pitch, and road dust, completing the Satsnakheli awakening.
- Shaping and Carving the Haft:
Bruised Timber-Staves of High Pass Concerning Iron-Axle Wagoner, Seven Spiders of Wet Scree, and Whip That Held Sun by Spoke
In the day when the white goats had not yet taught the first children to leap across the black split-stone, and before the salt-merchants had laid smooth river-pebbles over the goat-paths to make the Great Ridge Road, there lived in the cloud-collar of the upper crags a carter of heavy oak timbers. In the notched lime-bark records of the boundary-house, his name is scratched down as He-Who-Binds-the-Two-Shafts; but the teamsters who break bread upon the water-trough called him only Rostom of the Hornbeam Bench, the Wagon-Father.
Rostom did not have great cattle of fat tallow, nor did he possess silver plates beaten with dancing stags. He possessed only an axle-tree of cured ash-wood, four solid wheels sawn from the heart of mountain-pear trees, and two great dun oxen whose horns were thick like the pillars of an underground granary, named The-Left-Ridge and The-Right-Grave.
In that season, the roads between the terraced vineyards and the iron-smelting valleys were not quiet. Along the damp clefts where the grey fog sits like grease upon the slate, there dwelt the road-devourers whom the mountain-tongue names Ali. These were not creatures of bone and skin like men or horses; they were tall, thin horrors with bodies woven out of greasy wet hemp, rotten saddle-hair, and wet willow-twigs. They had no eyes to look upon bread or meat, but they had nine clawed feet like cart-pins, and their bellies hungered only for broken iron, cracked wood, and the screams of horses falling into the deep chasm.
When an ox-cart laden with wine-skins or bronze bars would reach the high switchback where the wind blows three ways at the goat-corner, the Ali would step out of the grey scree. They would not stab with daggers. They would blow a cold, foul rot upon the axle-linchpins until the iron turned to soft cheese; they would scatter black river-pebbles beneath the hooves of the horses until the beasts slipped in their iron shoes; and they would whistle with a shrill whistle like a cracked flute until the team took fear, lunged sideways, and dashed cart, driver, and grain-chest into the mouth of the five-hundred-cubit abyss. Then the Ali would climb down the cliffs upon their bellies like lice to lick the axle-grease from the smashed splinters and swallow the cracked bronze rings.
Now the season was the turning of the Red Leaf, and in the high monastery-fortress of Saint Marine-upon-the-Snows, the sick brothers and the little children had no spelt-flour, nor did they have the sulfur-pitch to seal their roof-timbers against the coming three months of frost. The kings of the low terraces brought twenty wagon-loads of grain to the bottom of the pass, but the teamsters turned their faces away and spit upon the gravel.
“The scree has teeth,” said the carters of the valley, unhitching their mules. “Three carriages went up before the new moon, and three times the Ali snapped their wagon-tongues. We saw the grey mules rolling down the throat of the chasm with their bellies split by the rocks. No man drives wood past the Black Switchback while the grey mist has the road.”
Then Rostom stood forth from behind the tongue of his cart. He held in his right hand a thirty-inch crop cut from a branch of highland hornbeam that had grown upon a grave-mound where an old chieftain had been buried upright in his war-cart. The wood was carved with three running sun-spirals (Borjgali); its collar was beaten bronze set with an oval stone of yellow citrine that looked like a drop of honey frozen in winter ice; and its lash was thirty plaits of hair taken from the tail of a thunder-stallion intertwined with the tough, dried fibers of an ancient mountain grapevine. At the bottom of the handle was a wheel of bronze with four spokes, and at the end of the braid swung a hollow bead of red copper.
“A road that is made with hands,” spake Rostom, and his voice was dry like gravel rattling inside a hollow gourd, “was not trodden out for the spiders of the ditch to sleep upon. The grain belongs to the mouth that prays in the snow. If the devil sits upon the axle-tree, then the whip must speak to the wheel.”
The valley men cried that he was feeding his two oxen to the ravens, but Rostom piled forty sacks of hard grain upon his pear-wood bed, lashed the sacks with raw bull-hide, kissed the wet muzzle of The-Left-Ridge, and stepped up onto the bench of ash.
Upward the cart climbed through the morning watch. The road was narrower than a cow’s flank; on the right hand stood the black wall of dripping schist, and on the left hand yawned the empty air where the mountain-hawks fly below a man’s boots.
When the sun sat upon the middle notch of the jagged peak, the cart reached the corner known as the Devil’s Throat. The air turned foul, smelling of wet wool-grease, sour bilge-water, and rusted iron. Out of the cracks in the slate crawled the chief of the Ali, whose body was twelve cubits of knotted grey rope, flanked by six sisters whose fingers were like crooked cart-spikes.
“Halt the wooden box, son of dust,” hissed the Ali, and the breath from its throat laid a coat of greasy ice upon the road-pebbles. “No wheel turns upon this slate unless it turns in the air as it falls! We have not licked the warm marrow of an ox-bone since the sheep-fair of the middle moon!”
The monster reached out its long, fibrous arm and blew upon the right-hand axle-pin of Rostom’s wagon. The tough iron began to turn black, bubbling like wet soap, and The-Right-Grave let out a low bellow of terror, leaning back upon his haunches as his hooves slipped on the icy rock toward the brink.
Rostom did not grasp his wood-knife, nor did he drop the hempen traces. He rose upon his feet on the rocking driver’s bench. His eyes did not look down into the fog; they looked straight into the yellow citrine stone mounted upon the neck of his crop.
He drew his arm back and snapped the whip overhead in a great circle that matched the rolling of a wheel.
The copper bead at the lash-tip did not whistle; it let out a sharp, tearing crash like an oak-tree split by a bolt of blue heaven. A circle of golden fire, four-spoked like the bronze pommel at his wrist, appeared spinning in the air between the oxen’s ears. The yellow citrine flared with a light so bright that the grey mist vanished from the scree like dew touched by a blacksmith’s poker.
The thunder-crack struck the chief of the Ali across its knotted breast. The creature shrieked with a sound like wet hide tearing upon an iron nail, falling backward five yards upon the shale.
“The road is the mother of the team!” cried Rostom, and he struck the air three times—once for the left yoke, once for the right yoke, and once across the dry axle-beam.
At the second crack, the rotten linchpin upon the right wheel ceased its melting; the bronze ward of the sun-wheel passed through the wood, turning the soft ash into the hardness of river-iron. At the third crack, a strange heat surged down the leather traces into the muscles of the two dun oxen. Their knees, which had been trembling upon the edge of the chasm, locked solid into the slate; their eyes, which had rolled with the white blindness of terror, saw only the golden circle rolling before them; and they leaned into the heavy yoke with a bellow that shook the icicles from the overhang.
The six sisters of the Ali rushed forward with their iron-spiked fingers to claw the spokes and tear the wicker sides of the wagon-bed. Rostom lashed downward with the braided horsehair and grapevine thong.
Where the copper cracker kissed the stones, golden sparks jumped like grasshoppers in dry barley. The whip did not cut flesh; it cut the momentum of the wicked. Whenever the lash struck the spindly knees of an Ali, the creature spun like a child’s top, its footing torn from the rock, until it tumbled howling over the rim of the precipice to be dashed into grey wool upon the boulders below.
The chief monster pulled its wet body together, swelling with rage until its limbs were like heavy ship-cables. It threw its whole bulk before the front left wheel of the cart to shatter the pear-wood hub and wedge the carriage across the path.
Rostom did not turn the oxen aside. He swept the whip in the sacred seven-fold circle of the Borjgali, touching the citrine stone with his thumb, and shouted the ancient driving-word which the kings have forgotten:
“Roll, wheel, for the sun does not turn backward upon the hill!”
A lane of bright golden light shot from the tip of the whip, thirty cubits long and wide as an ox-yoke. The loose scree beneath the wagon transformed under the light into a pavement of smooth, dry granite flags; the rotten mud vanished; and the heavy wagon surged forward with the speed of an arrow cast from a composite bow.
The iron-shod wheel of the cart caught the great Ali across its fibrous chest. There was no sound of cracking bone, for the creature was made of malice and wet fog; there was only a loud puff like a bladder of dry grain-dust bursting under a mallet. The monster was flattened into a dry, paper-thin mat of grey chaff, which the strong mountain wind tore away and scattered down the valley like useless thistle-down.
Rostom did not check the oxen. The team galloped through the Devil’s Throat as if they trod the level clover of a river-meadow. The four pear-wood wheels hummed with a sound like bees in a hollow hollow-stump, throwing yellow sparks from their iron tires, while the driver stood upon the bench, his woolen wrist-loop steady, his grip unyielding as the rock.
Before the sun had dropped behind the monastery ridge, the great wagon rolled into the courtyard of Saint Marine-upon-the-Snows. The forty sacks of spelt were dry; the roof-pitch was intact; and the two dun oxen stood quietly by the stone fountain, their flanks dry and white with road-salt, their breath sweet like clover-tea.
When the monks came forth with wooden bowls of warm water to wash the feet of the carter, they found that the right axle-tree of the cart was not made of wood at all, but had been turned by the fire of the citrine stone into solid, gleaming yellow brass that neither rusts nor breaks.
Rostom hung his hornbeam whip upon the timber gate-post of the yard, where it hung for nine generations of men. Whenever the mountain storms came down and the grey fog crept up from the ravines, the copper bead would swing in the wind without hands, letting out a small, clear bell-sound that kept the axles of the village wagons whole and drove the creeping things of the scree far back into their wet holes.
This narrative was branded with a hot iron needle upon the wooden foot-board of Rostom’s own wagon, which was set into the chancel wall of the upper church until the roof fell in during the Great Shaking of the Earth, when the staves were gathered by the goatherds and hidden in the wool-chests.
Moral of the Story
He who holds the reins of duty must remember that the path is not conquered by brute haste or blind terror, but by steady rhythm, an unyielding grip, and the courage to drive forward through the dark; for when a man binds his labor to the common good, the very earth will turn to stone beneath his wheels and no snare of the ditch can overturn his wagon.

- Inertial Anchor: The user gains DM+2 to resist being thrown, ejected, or knocked down during vehicle collisions, rollovers, or sharp high-G maneuvers.
- Active Features:
- Acoustic Thunder-Crack:
- Time: Significant Action
- Mechanics: The user snaps the crop overhead, discharging an acoustic kinetic shock. The vehicle or mount gains an immediate 20% speed burst for 1 round. Hostile pursuit vehicles within 10 meters must pass a Drive check (8+) or suffer DM–1 to all piloting actions for 1 round due to pilot disorientation; living predators must pass an END check (8+) or retreat 10 meters.
- Kinetic Axle-Disruption:
- Time: Significant Action
- Mechanics: Strike an adjacent vehicle’s tracks/wheels or an interceptor within 2 meters. On a successful Melee check, kinetic disruption rattles the target’s running gear: an opposing pilot must succeed on a Drive check (8+) or lose vehicle control, reducing speed by half and suffering DM–2 to maneuver checks for 1 combat round.
- Solar Path-Clearing Arc:
- Time: Significant Action
- Duration: 1 round
- Mechanics: The user sweeps the crop in an arc across the path ahead. A 3-meter-wide, 10-meter-long lane directly in front of the vehicle is smoothed and cleared of road spikes, mud pits, and loose scree, ignoring terrain penalties and halving collision damage against light debris.

- Description: A thirty-inch driving crop carved from highland hornbeam wood inscribed with seven-rayed Borjgali sun-wheels, wrapped in walnut-tanned oxhide. A bronze ferrule houses a warm oval citrine cabochon, joining the haft to an eighteen-inch braided horsehair-and-grapevine lash tipped with a copper cracker and balanced by a four-spoked bronze wheel pommel. Smells continuously of saddle leather, pine resin, ozone, and highway dust.
- Passive Traits:
- Sure-Footed Draught Bond: The wielder gains a +10% bonus to Drive, Ride, and Animal Training Tests when guiding draft teams, carts, or wagons across hazardous routes (scree, deep mud, cliff ledges). Hitch animals cannot be affected by the Fear Condition from nonmagical causes.
- Borjgali Axle-Ward: The vehicle driven by the wielder gains +2 to its Structural Toughness against road-damage, broken axles, collision shocks, and sabotage.
- Anchored Seat: The bearer gains a +20% bonus to Athletics Tests to resist being knocked from the driver’s box, thrown from a saddle, or knocked Prone by sudden stops, collisions, or high-speed swerves.
- Active Abilities:
- Thunder-Crack of the High Road:
- Action: Half Action
- Test: Simple (+40%) Drive or Leadership Test
- Mechanics: Snapping the whip overhead releases a concussive thunderclap. The draft team’s Movement characteristic increases by +2 for 1 minute. Hostile pursuers and creatures within 6 yards must pass a Cool or Willpower Test or gain 1 Broken Condition and suffer a –10% penalty to intercept or attack rolls against the wagon for 1 round.
- Hub-Scattering Lash:
- Action: Half Action
- Test: Challenging (+0%) Melee (Entangling) Test
- Mechanics: Strike an adjacent vehicle’s running gear or a pursuing rider within Long reach. On a successful hit, kinetic sparks discharge: an enemy vehicle must pass a Challenging (+0%) Drive Test or lose control, halving its Movement and suffering –20% to all driving tests for 1 round. A mounted rider must succeed on an Agility Test or be knocked backward 4 yards.
- Sun-Wheel Pathclearing:
- Action: Full Action
- Test: Difficult (–10%) Channeling or Drive Test
- Mechanics: Sweeping the whip in a circular arc traces a consecrated sun-track 2 yards wide and 8 yards long directly ahead of the carriage for 1 round. The vehicle ignores Difficult Ground penalties from mud, rubble, gravel, or road spikes, and damage taken from smashing through light barricades in this path is halved.
- Thunder-Crack of the High Road:
