Lore
- Across the frontier trade corridors, rail arteries, and steam-car tracks of Saṃsāra, mechanized wagons and heavy transports constantly brave hostile wilderness, rust-storms, and sabotaged roads; teamsters carrying lineage memories of Afro-Cuban Santería invoke Ogún, the fierce Orisha of iron, blacksmithing, locomotives, cutting tools, and rugged mechanical force.
- Traditional drivers recognized that controlling a vehicle—whether a beast-drawn wagon, an iron-plated steam crawler, or a high-velocity terrestrial rig—is fundamentally an act of forging steel and earth into a single unbroken path through sheer kinetic will.
- When early convoys suffered sheared axles, blown boiler gaskets, and wheel collapses during high-speed supply runs across jagged limestone scrub, mechanics consecrated vehicle control levers and steering yokes with forged pig iron, braided green-and-black ribbons, and river-stone weights to anchor the machine’s momentum directly to Ogún’s unyielding strength.
- The number 447 designates an authentic, common-tier pattern registered with frontier convoy outposts and transit mechanics, carefully balanced so a Tier 1 avatar can hold sway over heavy vehicles and draft mounts without overloading the machine’s chassis or suffering violent steering kickback.
- Today, it is mounted to driver benches, cockpits, and carriage posts by daring couriers, convoy wheelmen, border rum-runners, and locomotive stokers who know that when iron meets asphalt, only an iron will keeps the wheels on the road.
Description
- The item is a reinforced steering-lever handle and vehicle talisman measuring fourteen inches long, built from a core rod of hand-hammered, oil-quenched wrought iron wrapped tightly in alternating wraps of emerald-green and soot-black waxed cowhide lacing.
- The pommel grip is crowned with a curved, polished black bull horn tipped with a hand-peened pig-iron cap, grooved with seven notched strikes honoring Ogún’s sacred number.
- The base of the lever terminates in an adjustable iron collar and threaded clamp bracket, designed to affix firmly onto steering wheels, wagon tiller arms, directional levers, or pilot control yokes.
- A Tier 1 magic crystal—a coin-sized, coin-weighted tumbled nodule of green bloodstone flecked with red mineral inclusions—is inset into an open iron cage welded directly beneath the horn grip.
- Three forged miniature iron railway spikes and a tiny forged iron anvil charm hang from a braided rawhide thong looped through the horn’s collar, clinking like a distant blacksmith’s hammer with every jolt of the suspension.
- The implement constantly emits the scent of scorched machine oil, hot engine coal, quenched slag, struck flint, and crushed wild tobacco.

Lore
Crafted at a dust-blown Havana intersection during the transition between day and night, this charm blends traditional Lucumí devotion with modern transit mysticism. It was consecrated to Elegguá—the Orisha who governs paths, doorways, and travelers—before being blessed with Catholic holy water at the altar of Saint Anthony. In the shifting world of Saṃsāra, wheelmen and wanderers affix these charms to their steering columns or wrap them around their grips, praying that every blocked route finds an opening and every sudden detour leads to safety.
Description
A palm-sized pendant braided from red and black jute cord, hung with a polished silver key, three dried chili pods, and a pierced nickel coin bearing a faint cross. The braid smells faintly of cigar smoke, rum, and motor oil. When held near a vehicle’s controls, the braided strands twitch subtly toward unobstructed pathways.

- Black-Market Smuggler Dens and Chop-Shops:
- Physical Location and Structure: Tucked away inside hidden dockside warehouses, subterranean canal garages, or abandoned rail roundhouses, these illicit establishments service contraband haulers, getaway drivers, and rogue street racers. The air is thick with the smell of cheap fuel, burnt rubber, raw cane liquor, and cutting torch fumes.
- Buying Procedure and Pricing: Black-market brokers deal in untraced steering charms stripped from hijacked supply trucks or salvaged from high-speed wrecks.
- Prices fluctuate erratically between 45 and 60 silver coins (4.5 to 6 gold coins), driven by the high demand among getaway drivers who rely on the charm’s barricade-breaching speed and smoke-screen misdirection to evade harbor patrols and city enforcers.
- Official guild credentials carry no standing and can invite threats; transactions rely entirely on street leverage and cash.
- Payment must be made in unminted bullion, foreign coins, or scrap silver, as black-market dealers strictly reject World Bank transactions to avoid detection by city inspectors.
- Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Avatars seeking to liquidate charms obtained from hijacked cargo or road ambushes sell to back-alley fences without questions of origin.
- Fences pay the standard 10% baseline per seller tier level in raw coin.
- If a smuggler crew is actively planning a high-speed contraband run through locked municipal gates, a fence may offer an inflated cash payout of 6 to 10 silver coins directly into the seller’s hand.
Tactical Roleplay of the Crossroads Driver Across the Environments of Saṃsāra
- Congested Metropolitan Alleys and Market Thoroughfares:
- Environmental Context: Cobblestone streets choked with merchant handcarts, low-hanging laundry lines, sudden toll turnstiles, and narrow alleyways where heavy horse carriages or steam-skiffs risk wedging against masonry walls.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While escaping a municipal patrol through a dense canal bazaar, the wheelman relies on Sure Grip of the Crossroads. As the vehicle banks hard into a rain-slick hairpin alleyway covered in rotting cabbage leaves and wet grease, the wheels bite into the stone without fishtailing, avoiding a catastrophic collision with shop fronts.
- When cornered into a dead-end street by pursuing armored wagons, the driver snaps one of the dried chili pods on the braided cord to trigger Spirit’s Misdirection. A thick, pungent plume of cigar-ash smoke billows outward from the undercarriage, blinding the chasing drivers, spoiling their line of sight, and forcing them to slam on their brake levers.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Chasing down a rival courier through a crowded market square, the driver utilizes Wayfinder’s Clarity to see past drifting vendor charcoal smoke and flapping awnings, spotting the precise path between stalls.
- Approaching a heavy wooden market barrier or chained toll-gate, the driver taps the polished silver key against the steering apparatus, activating Open the Red Gate. The engine or draft team surges with a sudden +10% burst of speed, smashing directly through the timber gate without stalling or slowing down, ramming the opponent’s wagon just beyond the gate.
- Arid Badlands and Shifting Desert Salt Flats:
- Environmental Context: Blinding sun glare, sudden dust devils, loose dune crests, deep gravel gullies, and roving bandit skiffs armed with harpoon guns.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- When a fierce haboob dust storm reduces visibility to zero, the driver grips the red-and-black jute braid. Wayfinder’s Clarity allows the pilot to peer through the blowing red grit for 30 feet, spotting a jagged drop-off in time to wrench the steering yoke safely away from the canyon rim.
- Under pursuit by dune buggies, the driver triggers Spirit’s Misdirection. The cloud of stinging chili and cigar smoke mixes with the blowing sands, leaving bandit gunners choking and unable to establish a solid lock for their mounted rifles.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Engaging in high-speed mobile combat, the driver uses Sure Grip of the Crossroads to negotiate loose gravel drifts at top speed, executing tight tactical loops around heavier bandit technicals without losing wheel traction.
- Sighting a raider scout buggy bogged down in deep sand, the driver engages Open the Red Gate, accelerating hard over shifting dunes to execute a decisive high-impact T-bone maneuver against the enemy vehicle’s exposed wheel hub.
- Flooded Estuaries, Mangroves, and Brackish Waterways:
- Environmental Context: Sucking black mud, half-submerged corduroy log-roads, blinding marsh fogs, tangled cypress knees, and river pirates operating shallow draft skiffs.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Driving an amphibious crawler across a decaying wooden causeway that suddenly collapses into deep marsh slime, Sure Grip of the Crossroads prevents the treads from spinning aimlessly in the muck, maintaining steady traction to pull the chassis onto firmer mud banks.
- When night fog descends over a winding swamp channel, the driver holds the charm to read the twitching fibers, steering around hidden cypress roots and half-submerged stumps that would otherwise rip the vehicle’s rudder or drive-train away.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Ambushing an armed river barge, the pilot taps the silver key to trigger Open the Red Gate, vaulting the vehicle over a submerged mud bar and crashing down right alongside the barge’s low gunwales to let passengers board and clear the deck.
- Passing through a tight swamp canal, the driver crushes a chili pod to deploy Spirit’s Misdirection, laying down a wall of oily, eye-watering smoke that leaves trailing swamp skiffs stranded in the shallows as their helmsmen cough blindly.
- Subterranean Mining Tunnels and Vault Passages:
- Environmental Context: Pitch-black railway tunnels, abandoned trolley tubes, damp rails, heavy iron bulkhead doors, and sudden cave-ins.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While hauling high-explosive ore through an unventilated drift filled with damp-gas haze, Wayfinder’s Clarity pierces the gloom, allowing the operator to steer clear of rusted switch-points and dropped mining ties.
- If an iron mine-cart jumps its track or a brake line snaps, the driver holds the jute braid to engage the charm’s stability buff, wrestling the runaway vehicle into a controlled skid against the tunnel timbering to arrest momentum safely.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When hostile subterranean guards pull an emergency chain to drop a heavy iron security grate across the exit tunnel, the driver activates Open the Red Gate. The vehicle surges forward under unyielding spiritual torque, slamming through the lowered bars and shattering the gate’s mounting bolts to break into daylight.
- In a close-quarters pursuit along twin tram rails, the driver veers into the oncoming lane and releases Spirit’s Misdirection, trapping the pursuers inside a blinding, smoky subterranean pocket where they inevitably collide with trailing ore carts.

- Mind’s Eye Focusing / Artifice Infusion: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to balance kinetic mass channels and align the bloodstone’s inclusions with Ogún’s road-warding resonance).
- Crafting Steps:
- Forging the Iron Core and Open Retaining Cage:
- Heat the fourteen-inch wrought iron rod in the forge to a bright cherry-red heat (roughly 900°C).
- Draw down the top two inches of the rod to form a seating tenon for the horn pommel, and square off the bottom four inches to receive the mounting clamp collar.
- Forge-weld the four thin iron cage rods around the shaft just below the pommel tenon, splaying them outward to form an open, four-barred basket sized to hold the bloodstone.
- Anneal the iron structure in ash, then heat to a dull red and plunge it into the spent mineral oil quenching trough, ensuring a resilient, oil-blackened finish.
- Fitting the Bull Horn Pommel and Insetting the Bloodstone:
- Fit the hand-peened pig-iron cap over the curved tip of the polished black bull horn, securing it with hot rivets or peening.
- Chisel seven distinct, notched transverse strikes into the iron cap honoring Ogún’s sacred cadence.
- Drill a mounting hole in the base of the horn to fit over the iron shaft’s tenon, seating it firmly with an interference fit and peening the exposed tip flush.
- Heat half a dram of amber tree sap resin using the fluid collector and line the base of the open iron cage.
- Insert the tumbled green bloodstone into the cage, pressing it into the warm resin so its red inclusions face outward.
- Bend the four cage rods inward over the crown of the bloodstone, hammering their tips flush to lock the stone rigidly within the iron basket.
- Crafting and Threading the Mounting Clamp:
- Forge the two-piece iron clamp collar to fit the squared lower section of the shaft.
- Punch and tap two bolt holes through the opposing flanges to accept the hardened steel clamping bolts.
- Mount the collar onto the bottom of the iron rod and quench the assembly in machine oil to prevent thread galling under road vibration.
- Leather Binding and Charm Suspension:
- Clamp the central iron shaft into the padded bench vise.
- Wrap the shaft in tight, alternating spirals of emerald-green and soot-black waxed cowhide lacing, pulling each turn under heavy tension with the awl to eliminate slack.
- Burnish the leather lacing with bees oil and machine grease until the wraps form a seamless, moisture-resistant, non-slip grip.
- Loop the eighteen-inch braided rawhide thong securely around the neck of the bull horn pommel.
- Suspend the three miniature forged railway spikes and the tiny iron anvil charm along the thong’s drop-ends, knotting them with reinforced hitches so they hang freely and strike together with mechanical vibration.
- Consecration, Slag-Quenching, and Kinetic Attunement:
- Take the fully assembled steer-horn to a functioning workshop anvil or an operational rail junction.
- Smear the bloodstone and the pig-iron cap with a mixture of crude axle grease, crushed wild tobacco leaf, and powdered iron slag filings.
- Project focused mental energy through the Mind’s Eye into the bloodstone node, visualizing iron wheels cutting unyielding ruts through rock, mud, and road hazards without deflection.
- Strike the pig-iron cap three distinct times against the anvil’s face, matching each blow with a spoken invocation to Ogún.
- Maintain mental projection until the green bloodstone flashes with internal crimson sparks, a sharp hiss of vaporized motor grease rises from the horn, and the hanging iron charms ring with a sustained, bell-like blacksmith’s chime.
- Forging the Iron Core and Open Retaining Cage:
Black Bull-Horn Lever and Great Ox-Wagon That Broke Iron Mountain
In the age when the great rivers had not yet learned to run in ditches of cut stone, when the smiths of the lower delta hammered only soft copper with round river-pebbles, there lived a driver of heavy timber-drays whose name upon the burnt bricks of the kiln is inscribed as The Man Whose Knees Smell of Axle-Fat. In the lesser dialect of the furnace-stokers, he was called The Breaker of Thills, while in the records of the harbor-weighers he is designated as Seven Men in One Belt. He had no gold hair-pins, nor did he possess seven purple mantles of the sea-snail dye. He possessed only a four-wheeled dray built from the black locust-trunks, drawn by eight wild buffaloes whose horns were bound with strips of boiled hide, and his hands were calloused like the pads of a bear’s paw.
The old men who chew dry roots beside the charcoal-hearths recount that the pass between the two red hills was ruled by a robber of road-iron whose title was The Chieftain Who Swallows Wheel-Spokes. This lord dwelt within a ditch-fortification constructed from eleven thousand broken chariot-hubs. He kept forty-nine dogs whose collars were spiked with copper wire, and seventy-two spearmen whose thighs were greased with melted lard so that no wrestler might cast them down. Whenever a dray or a timber-cart approached the hill-throat, he caused seven great logs of ironwood to be rolled across the wheel-ruts, and beneath the dust his boys hid three hundred iron crows’ feet to pierce the hooves of the draft-beasts.
“No carter shall lead his team toward the salt-wharf,” roared the chieftain through two lips that were purple like bruised damsons, “unless he renders into my wooden bowl three ingots of hard tin and the right kidney of his fattest mule. Whosoever attempts to drive his dray past my log-barrier shall see his axle-tree sawed asunder, his wheels burned to cook our mutton, and his shins broken with a lead-headed beetle.”
The timber-driver came to the foot of the two red hills when the sun was standing overhead like a brass platter in a furnace. The heat was terrible; the pitch ran from the pine knots of the wagon-bed like hot honey, and the eight buffaloes stood with their tongues hanging out, their nostrils caked with white froth. In his sack the driver had no three bars of tin; he had only half a loaf of barley-meal mixed with chaff, a small skin of bitter olive oil, and a pair of broken harness-buckles.
He brought the eight beasts to a halt before the ironwood barrier. He descended from the plank seat, and sitting down upon a cracked millstone, he struck his two temples with his hard fists, calling upon the stones of the ditch to fall upon his head.
“Why do you bellow like a cow whose calf has fallen into a well?” inquired a rough sound from the thick thorn-brake. It was not the call of a wood-cutter, nor was it the murmuring of water over stones, but it sounded like a heavy drop-hammer striking cold billet upon a deep anvil.
The teamster parted the dry thorn-scrub. There stood beside an ancient slag-heap not an elder of the court, nor a merchant of purple cloths, but a tall man whose skin was black and greasy like the bottom of a tallow-kettle. His chest was wide like a granary door, and his two shoulders were marked with the burns of flying iron-scales. He wore around his loins only an apron of stiff bull-hide scorched by the blower, and in his right hand he held an iron rod fourteen inches long, crowned with the curved black horn of a river-bull capped with iron that had seven notches cut into its edge.
Beneath the curved horn, in a little cage of four twisted iron bars, sat a green stone that had red specks like sparks spitting from a charcoal pot. From the collar of the rod dangled three little nails of the dray-iron and a small hammer-block of dark iron, which knocked together with every movement of the smith’s elbow, singing like a forge in the deep night.
“The ironwood logs are thick like the waist of a fat ox,” groaned the carter, tearing the hairs of his chin. “My timbers are heavy, and the crows’ feet in the sand will lame my eight beasts. The barge-masters at the black river will hang me by the thumbs because I have not brought the locust-beams for the ship-stems.”
The black-skinned smith laughed, and his laughter sounded like iron plates falling upon stone flags. He stepped into the road, bringing with him the stench of burnt grease, coal-smoke, struck pyrites, and wild green tobacco that grows in the rocks.
“A path is not made by weeping into the dust,” said the worker of the anvil. “The road belongs to the iron that drives straight through the hedge. Take this steer-horn and bind its clamp around the lever of your steering-bar. Do not grease it with sheep-tallow or sweet almond water; wipe its green stone with the dregs of your bitter axle-sludge, and speak the seven words of the hammer-stroke. When the wheels begin to roll, do not look behind to see who curses in the dust, for he who steers with the horn of the bull must go through the stone and not around it.”
The teamster took the iron lever. Its weight in his palm was like the weight of a stone anchor, yet when he lifted it toward the wagon-box, it moved as light as a dried elder-branch. He affixed the clamp to the heavy steering-yoke of the dray, turning the two iron screws until they bit into the oak timber. He took a greasy rag from his wheel-box and smeared the green bloodstone with black grease, shouting the seven syllables of the anvil-salute toward the red hill.
Immediately, the green pebble inside the four bars flared with a light like grass burning under a noonday sun, and its red spots flashed like molten slag in the water-bath. The three little iron spikes and the tiny anvil charm began to clatter against each other, making a sound like ten smiths hammering upon an iron kettle.
The eight wild buffaloes did not wait for the ox-goad. Their red eyes turned straight toward the ironwood barrier; their black hooves struck the flint-bed so fiercely that blue fire leapt from the stones, and they threw their heavy necks into the wooden collars with the strength of sixty oxen.
The carter grasped the black bull horn. A fierce heat, like the heat of an oven when the door is drawn, rushed up his arms and settled into the marrow of his chest. His eyes saw the road not as a track of dust and stones, but as a deep groove of red fire cut through the middle of the world.
The dray sprang forward. When the eight beasts reached the hidden crows’ feet, the sharp iron spikes did not pierce their frogs; the points were crushed flat beneath their hooves like dried beans under a millstone. The wagon reached the seven logs of ironwood. It did not swerve, nor did the wooden axle crack; the black locust-tongue of the dray struck the logs with the roar of a falling quarry-wall, splitting the seasoned timber into small splinters that flew through the air like dry barley-straw.
The seventy-two spearmen greased with lard attempted to seize the wheels by the felloes, but the spokes turned with such terrible fury that the men’s wrists were snapped like dry reeds, and they were flung headlong into the ditch of thorns. The forty-nine dogs with copper collars ran howling into the scrub, for their coats were singed by the shower of forge-sparks that sprayed from the tires of the dray.
The wagon did not slacken its pace; it climbed the steep spine of the hill as though it were descending a grassy meadow, leaving two black furrows burned into the bedrock where the iron tires had ground the granite into powder. And before the shadow of the gallows-tree had touched the well-curb, the driver drew up his eight foaming buffaloes at the salt-quay and cast his locust-timbers into the holds of the ships.
Now when The Chieftain Who Swallows Wheel-Spokes returned from chasing wild sheep and saw that his seven ironwood logs were reduced to kindling, that his seventy-two spearmen sat in the weeds holding their broken forearms, and that the two black ruts were smoking upon his hill-road, his liver was dried up with rage.
“Who is this ox-scraper who drives through my logs as though they were rotten cabbage?” cried the chieftain, brandishing an iron club studded with copper rivets. “Harness my two war-camels to the great bronze wagon that my father took from the sea-raiders! We shall overtake this carter, and his marrow shall be boiled to make ointment for my spearmen’s ribs!”
The chieftain mounted his bronze wagon, which had tires four fingers thick and sides lined with plates of beaten brass. He whipped his two camels until their hides were red with welts, following the smoking ruts across the crest of the hill until he saw the teamster returning along the lower valley road, his dray empty and his buffaloes walking at ease.
“Stand, you dog of the dung-heaps!” shrieked the chieftain, driving his camels headlong down the stone slope. “I will take that black horn from your steering-tree, and I will use it to blow the bellows of my kitchen-fire while your flesh rots upon the boundary-stone!”
The chieftain sprang from his bronze wagon onto the tongue of the teamster’s dray. He laid his greedy hand upon the black bull-horn, seeking to wrench it from the iron bracket.
He did not wipe the bloodstone with axle-grease, nor did he call upon the maker of the anvil; he twisted the horn backward, intending to throw the wagon into the rocky gully.
The iron handle did not turn like a oiled screw. It became instantly like a bar of iron drawn white-hot from the heart of a coal-fire. The flesh of the chieftain’s palms was welded to the black horn with a loud hiss like a hot iron dropped into horse-urine. The three small railway spikes and the little anvil charm did not ring with a merry music; they began to clatter with the noise of collapsing mine-props and tumbling rocks.
The green stone in the cage flared with a dark, suffocating smoke that smelled of sulfur, burning hair, and dead grease. The two war-camels took fright at the stench; they wheeled about in their harness, tangling their long legs in the trace-chains, and dragged the heavy bronze wagon sideways over the lip of the canyon.
The chieftain could not loosen his fingers from the scorched horn; the steering-yoke of his own bronze chariot caught him across the loins, dragging him beneath the iron-shod wheels as they went bounding down the five hundred cubits of shale. Downward they rolled, camel and bronze and man together, until they struck the dry floor of the iron-pit, where the heavy axles of his grandfather’s carriage snapped into twenty pieces and buried him beneath four cart-loads of loose shale.
When the dust had settled into the crevices of the rocks, the black-skinned smith walked out from behind the millstone. The iron steer-horn was lying in the middle of the road, cold and clean, with its wraps of emerald and black leather unspotted by the dust. Within the little cage, the bloodstone sat quiet like a beetle asleep beneath an oak-leaf.
The smith lifted the horn by its iron bracket. He set it into the hands of The Man Whose Knees Smell of Axle-Fat, who stood trembling beside his eight beasts.
“Keep your hand upon the steer-horn,” said the smith, wiping his black forehead with his apron of hide. “The road is long, and there are many who will set logs across the ditch because their own carts are broken. But remember: iron answers only to him who holds the rut with an unbending wrist; he who turns the wheel backward to crush his fellow-traveler will find the axle turned against his own neck.”
Then the smith vanished into the blue smoke that rose from the lime-kilns, and the teamster drove his dray through the valley in peace, singing the seven notes of the hammer-song that the smiths still teach to the boys when the fire is blown at nightfall.
And these words were carved with an iron graver upon a bar of pig-iron found among the stones of the pass, which the interpreters of the old towns have read with much difficulty, skipping the signs they could not understand and guessing at the rest like blind men counting sheep.
Moral of the Story
The true mastery of the road belongs to the resolute heart that drives straight through hazard with honesty and unyielding grip; but he who uses the power of the wheel to block the way of others or seeks to turn the machine to malice will be dragged down and crushed beneath the weight of his own iron.
