Runic 73 of the Barrow Delvers Bone Bodkin

Lore

In the frost-cracked tumuli and ancestral cairns of Saṃsāra, the draugr and ancient jarls guarded their silver with cruel, spring-loaded spikes, shearing scythes, and pressure-stones linked to crushing deadfalls. The vitkir of the high moors fashioned the Barrow-Delver’s Bone Bodkin for grave-wardens and ruin-scouts whose duty was to enter these resting mounds without triggering the tomb’s mechanical curses. By anchoring ancestral binding staves into dense whale-bone and meteoric bog iron, the bodkin allows an avatar to feel the hidden tension in tripping cords, freeze mechanical tumblers, and ground hair-trigger counterweights before they can snap shut.

Description

An eight-inch, tapered probe and bypass skewer carved from the dense, oil-hardened jawbone of a northern bowhead whale. The squared hilt is capped with a cold-beaten collar of dark bog iron, terminating in a small iron suspension loop wrapped with waxed sinew. Running along the four flat facets of the tapered needle are finely carved Elder Futhark runes: Kenaz (the torch, revealing hidden mechanisms), Isa (the ice, arresting motion and freezing triggers), and Nauthiz (the need/binding, enduring strain and securing failing pins). The engravings are filled with a paste of crushed amber resin, powdered charcoal, and mountain mica that glimmers faintly when aligned with hidden physical tension.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Tier / Rarity: Tier 1 / Common
  • Weight: 0.4 lbs
  • Durability: 30/30
  • Attunement: Requires 10 minutes spent using the bodkin to probe, pick, and reset a mechanical lock or spring-loaded trap while reciting the staves of Isa and Nauthiz under breath.
  • Proficiency Required: Traps & Locks / Infiltration or Sleight of Hand / Runic Vitki (Tier 1)

Passive Magic

  • Whisper of the Taut Cord (Kenaz): When the tip of the bodkin is touched to stone, timber, or tile within five feet of a mechanical mechanism, vibrations from taut wires, coiled springs, or balanced counterweights resonate through the bone. The user intuitively feels the direction and tension of hidden triggers, preventing the avatar from accidentally setting off a trap while searching.
  • Mica-Glow Line: When sweeping the bodkin along seams, floorboards, or door frames, the mica-and-amber inlay within the Kenaz groove glimmers with a pale yellow luminescence whenever it passes within inches of concealed tripwires, recessed pressure needles, or hidden scythe grooves.

Activable Magic

  • Rime-Lock Stave (Action – Isa): The user inserts the tapered bone needle directly into a trap’s mechanical works—such as a gear assembly, spring latch, or falling block catch—and whispers the rune-stave of Isa.
    • Effect: A localized frost flash coats the inner gears, pins, or trip levers in brittle, unyielding rime, locking the mechanism in place for 10 minutes. While frozen, the mechanism cannot discharge or spring, granting safe passage or providing ample time to permanently sever cords and remove payload charges without risk.
    • Cooldown: 2 times per Short Rest.
  • Anchor of the Dire Need (Reaction – Nauthiz): When a mechanical trap, tripwire, or pressure plate is accidentally triggered by the user or an adjacent ally within 5 feet, the user jams the bodkin into the moving component while invoking Nauthiz.
    • Effect: The bodkin radiates a sudden, dull black pulse of structural inertia, swelling with unnatural weight and friction to halt the spring, dropping portcullis, or snapping blade mid-stroke for 1 round (approx. 6 seconds). This provides just enough time for creatures in the danger zone to dive clear before the bodkin gives way and the trap finishes its discharge.
    • Cooldown: 1 use per Long Rest.

Acquisition and Trade of the Barrow-Delver’s Bone Bodkin

  • Barrow-Breaker Camps and Antiquities Tents: Erected among the windy heathlands and heather-covered tumuli where expeditionary crews excavate ancient clan cairns, these canvas-and-turf shelters smell of wet dirt, lamp oil, and dried moss. Seasoned delvers inspect the bodkin by sliding its tip along a loaded bear-trap spring, checking for the telltale vibration along the bone shaft and the pale yellow glimmer of the Kenaz inlay. A retiring scavenger or an indebted digger selling off surplus gear receives 16 silver pieces. Newly arrived tomb-raiders, ruin-guides, and antiquities mercenaries outfitting for deep crypt descents buy one for 24 silver pieces.
  • Locksmithes and Clockwork Guild Ateliers: Found in bustling merchant boroughs and fortified harbor ports, these cramped workshops are cluttered with brass gears, iron lockboxes, and hanging ring-keys. Master locksmiths evaluate the tool by sliding it into an intricate pin-tumbler chest, ensuring the whale-bone taper does not burr under shear force and verifying that the cold bog-iron collar sits perfectly flush. An apprentice or itinerant tradesman liquidating tools receives 18 silver pieces in trade coin or precision files. Wealthy merchants, guild wardens, and estate-masters needing non-destructive lock probes purchase one for 26 silver pieces.
  • Thieves’ Guild Safehouses and Peat-Ditch Fences: Hidden inside sunken taprooms, peat-cutting shacks, and cellar dens beneath the waterfront, these shadowy operations deal in goods stripped from noble estates and old family crypts. The fence inspects the bodkin by holding it near a coiled iron wire to ensure the amber-and-mica resin flares properly, checking the sinew wrap for rot or bloodstains. A street pickpocket or barrow-skulker fencing a recovered bodkin receives a brisk 14 silver pieces. Burglars, second-story sneaks, and infiltration crews preparing for high-security vault jobs buy one for 30 silver pieces.
  • Vitki Runecarvers and Bone-Turner Shacks: Situated in remote coastal coves where stranded whale carcasses are ritually cleaned, these airy timber sheds are draped in drying sinew, bone chisels, and boiling pots of pine resin. The runemaster tests the piece by tapping the Isa stave with an iron needle, listening for the sharp crystalline ring that indicates true rime-binding within the bone marrow. An explorer bringing in an authentic ancestral bodkin for renewal or resale receives 20 silver pieces in raw amber nuggets, bone stock, or runic charms. Initiates and barrow-warden apprentices setting out on their vigil buy a newly consecrated bodkin for 28 silver pieces.
  • Frontier Pioneer Exchanges and Scout Wagons: Operating out of heavy iron-axled wagons at the edge of unexplored tundra and contested border marches, these rough supply posts provide survival implements to trail-blazers. The outfitter checks the bone needle for micro-fractures by stressing it against a notched oak peg and tapping the bog-iron collar with a copper punch. A scout trading in salvaged pioneer gear receives 15 silver pieces in dried salt-elk or smoked lard. Trappers, frontier surveyors, and militia scouts who must bypass deadfall snares and concealed pit-spikes pay 22 silver pieces.

Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Barrow-Delver’s Bone Bodkin

  • Frost-Cracked Cairns and Subterranean Draugr Tombs: Deep within damp granite burial barrows where ancestral draugr guard their grave-silver with hair-trigger scythes and falling flagstones, blind footwork is fatal. Defensively, when a vanguard scout steps onto a sunken slate tile linked to a ceiling deadfall, the delver drops to one knee and jams the bodkin beneath the falling counterweight lever; invoking Anchor of the Dire Need, a wave of deadened inertia freezes the crushing slab mid-drop for six vital seconds, allowing the party to scramble through the entryway before the stone crashes into pulverized rubble. Offensively, while advancing toward a sarcophagus chamber, the scout sweeps the needle across the wall seams; the Mica-Glow Line flares bright yellow, revealing a concealed pressure cord that controls a wall-mounted spring-loaded spear rack. By tapping the gear housing with Rime-Lock Stave, the delver coats the firing pin in thick frost, freezing the spears harmlessly in their sockets and disarming the kill-zone before the tomb’s undead sentinels can funnel the party into the volley.
  • Fortified Jarl’s Strongholds and Timber Gatehouses: Inside heavy oak-and-iron palisades where high-value armories, tribute chests, and grain stores are rigged with alarm bells and poison dart-traps, silent entry prevents garrison-wide mobilizations. Defensively, when an infiltrator attempts to bypass a reinforced iron lockbox and triggers a concealed spring that shoots poisoned bone needles at point-blank range, the delver uses the Whisper of the Taut Cord to sense the trip-trigger’s kinetic tension a second early; shifting their stance, they bring the bone needle’s bog-iron collar across the aperture, deflecting the needle into the floorboards without alerting the sleeping house-carls in the adjoining hall. Offensively, when cracking the reinforced latch of the garrison’s portcullis winch, the operator slides the tapered whale-bone needle directly between the interlocking ratchet cogs; invoking Rime-Lock Stave, brittle frost binds the iron teeth in place, disabling the latch completely so the gate can be eased open without the deafening clatter of releasing chains.
  • Bogland Peat-Trenches and Guerrilla Ambush Paths: Across misty peat marshes and willow thickets where frontier raiders rig tension-strung sapling deadfalls, pit-spikes, and trip-scythes to butcher pursuing patrols, the environment itself is a weapon. Defensively, as a patrol leader’s boot catches a submerged braided gut-wire hidden under stagnant marsh water, the trailing scout jams the bodkin into the tether peg; the Anchor of the Dire Need locks the bent willow sapling in place with artificial mass, allowing the vanguard to pull their boot clear of the snapping snare before the sapling flings lethal bone hooks across the trail. Offensively, the scout uses the bodkin’s Whisper of the Taut Cord to trace the raiders’ own defensive perimeter along the bog causeway; locating the primary trip-stakes that hold back a bank of sharpened birch logs, the scout deliberately manipulates the trigger with the bodkin’s tapered tip, discharging the deadfall from a safe distance onto an approaching enemy rear guard and turning their own lethal trap against them.
  • Underground Peat Mines and Abandoned Peat-Kilns: Within suffocating, timber-shored peat tunnels where decaying mine supports are rigged with load-bearing collapse cords to seal out intruders, sudden physical shocks can bury a squad alive. Defensively, when a pursuing subterranean beast snaps a hidden support wire that initiates a total ceiling cave-in, the delver drives the bodkin into the buckling timber joint; invoking Nauthiz, the structural inertia briefly shores up the splintering beam, stabilizing the shaft long enough for the delvers to dive into an adjoining granite alcove. Offensively, while hunting burrowing horrors through the mine galleries, the delver locates an abandoned miner’s ore-cart rigged to a spring-loaded track gate; by employing Rime-Lock Stave on the release pin, they hold the heavy cart in place until the approaching pack clusters directly along the rails, releasing the frost instantly to send tons of loose shale hurtling down the incline into the charging monsters.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: When the Isa or Nauthiz staves are invoked, the carved channels of the tapered whale-bone flare with an icy, pale cerulean brilliance that transitions to a cold, chalk-white aura. A visible frost pattern creeps outward from the tip, crystallizing along metal pins, tension cords, and stone seams in delicate, fern-like rime needles, while the amber-and-mica resin in Kenaz pulses like a dying ember.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Companions see the bone needle glow with an eerie, freezing gleam in the gloom of the crypt. As it enters the mechanism, a brief puff of white vapor vents from the keyhole or plate seam, and moving gears visibly seize as a skin of crystalline frost snaps across the ironwork.
    • Positives: Provides unmistakable visual confirmation that the mechanism’s kinetic energy has been arrested and the trigger is immobilized.
    • Negatives: The stark luminescence of the activated runes pierces dark dungeons and crypt corridors, potentially alerting lurking sentinels or wandering draugr.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: Activation produces a sound like lake-ice groaning and suddenly freezing solid in deep winter—a sharp, vitreous crick-snap—followed by the sudden, deadening silence of arrested springs and slackened counterweights.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers hear the violent click of a sprung mechanism abruptly choked into silence, replaced by a faint, brittle tinkling sound as microscopic ice crystals form inside the housing.
    • Positives: Replaces the deafening crash of deadfalls or ringing alarm bells with a hushed, localized freezing sound.
    • Negatives: In dead-silent burial chambers, the sharp crystalline snap can still carry through stone hallways up to thirty feet.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: The stale, cloying odor of grave-dust, rot, and ancient tomb moisture is violently cut by the razor-sharp smell of deep-winter frost, ozone, and pine-resin from the cured amber inlay.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Those standing nearby catch an immediate draft of frigid air carrying the mineral smell of frozen bog iron and chilled dry bone.
    • Positives: Clears the lungs of choking tomb mold and subterranean spore dust during delicate bypass work.
    • Negatives: The cold draft creates subtle convection currents in stagnant crypts, which can disturb dust sheets or alert beasts attuned to temperature shifts.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: The tongue and back of the throat fill with the crisp, dry taste of breathing mountain blizzard air at high altitude, accompanied by a sharp, metallic hint of clean iron meltwater.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Anyone inhaling the immediate vapor expelled from the frozen trap tastes a faint, sour resin and chalky limestone dust on their lips.
    • Positives: Keeps the operator acutely alert and prevents dry-mouth panic during high-stakes disarming attempts.
    • Negatives: Causes mild throat dryness and coughing fits if the user attempts rapid verbal communication immediately after triggering the effect.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: The bone shaft drops in temperature until it feels like gripping a hard icicle, though the cold bog-iron collar and sinew wrap insulate the fingers against frostbite. A subtle, thrumming hum vibrates into the palm, signaling the structural strain being absorbed by the bone.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Touching the mechanism or door frame near the insertion point reveals stone and iron that are biting cold to the skin, with moisture instantly freezing against the surface.
    • Positives: The bone never becomes slippery; the frost forms an abrasive, high-friction texture that prevents the tool from slipping from the fingers.
    • Negatives: Prolonged handling without gloves causes minor numbness in the fingertips, temporarily impairing subsequent fine-dexterity lock manipulation.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Tension-Sense (Kinetic Prescience):
      • User’s Perspective: The user psychically perceives the mechanical stress inside the trap as glowing, taut threads of gray and red energy. Tracing the bodkin along a seam maps out the exact balance points, counterweights, and shear pins waiting to release.
      • Observer’s Perspective: The operator appears to work with impossible insight, sliding the needle blindly into unmarked crevices and directly pinning critical trip-latches on the first attempt.
      • Positives: Bypasses the need for destructive dismantling by laying bare the internal logic of complex or alien trap designs.
      • Negatives: Floods the user’s mind with overlapping vectors of potential kinetic collapse, causing mild spatial headaches if used in areas with multiple interlocking mechanisms.
    • The Stilled Pulse (Entropic Stasis):
      • User’s Perspective: An intuitive psychic sensation of “stopped time” washes over the user’s awareness within the trap’s radius—a quiet certainty that all stored potential energy has been chained and rendered dormant.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Allies in the blast zone feel a sudden lifting of dread, as if an invisible blade hanging over their necks has been caught by an unseen hand.
      • Positives: Confirms beyond doubt that a hair-trigger plate is safe to step across without triggering a delayed secondary reaction.
      • Negatives: Creates a false sense of security; when the duration expires, the sudden return of kinetic momentum can catch an inattentive party off-guard.

Forging Protocol 73: The Barrow-Delver’s Bone Bodkin

  • Materials Needed:
    • One dense segment of cured jawbone from a northern bowhead whale (eight to nine inches in length, straight-grained, free of marrow pitting).
    • Four ounces of raw bog iron ore (smelted and drawn into thin collar stock and a small suspension ring).
    • One ounce of clean Baltic or northern beach amber (crushed to a fine translucent grit).
    • One ounce of pulverized mountain mica flakes.
    • One-half ounce of willow-heart charcoal powder.
    • Two feet of braided, oil-cured elk sinew (for grip wrap and loop binding).
    • Three ounces of pure rendered pine pitch mastic.
    • Linseed oil and beeswax emulsion (for finishing the polished bone surface).
  • Tools Required:
    • Fine bone-rasps, graduated needle files, and scraper blades.
    • Hardened steel gravers and V-profile carving chisels.
    • Antler burnishing tips and dry horsehair polishing cloths.
    • Small charcoal hearth, horn anvil, light cross-peen hammer, and hot-punch.
    • Soapstone mortar and pestle (for pigment and mineral grinding).
    • Fine brass heating spatula and melting crucible.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Bone Carving & Fine Scrimshaw: Rank 2 or higher.
    • Cold-Worked Smithing & Metallurgy: Rank 1 or higher.
    • Runic Vitki / Galdr Inscription: Rank 1 or higher.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Shape the whale-bone billet using the bone-rasp and needle files into a rigid, four-faceted tapered needle eight inches long, maintaining a reinforced squared tang at the base.
    • Scrape the facets smooth with fine scraper blades, then soak the shaped bone in warm linseed oil for twelve hours to seal the marrow pores against brittle fractures.
    • Forge a square bog-iron reinforcement collar from the drawn stock; hammer-weld a small suspension loop onto the butt end and drift the interior socket to seat snugly over the squared bone tang.
    • Quench the iron collar in cold river water, clean away scale, and seat it over the tang using hot pine pitch mastic; pin the collar in place through the bone core with an iron wire rivet.
    • Use fine gravers to carve the Elder Futhark runes into the four flat facets of the needle: Kenaz on the lead sensing facet, Isa across the lateral freezing faces, and Nauthiz down the trailing spine facet.
    • Grind the amber grit, mica flakes, and willow charcoal into a uniform mineral dust using the soapstone mortar and pestle.
    • Melt the remaining pine pitch mastic in the crucible, stir in the mineral dust until a thick, glistening paste forms, and press it while hot into the freshly incised rune channels using the brass spatula.
    • Allow the resinous inlay to cool and harden completely; scrape off excess binder with a flat razor until the amber-and-mica lines sit flush with the bone facets.
    • Burnish the bone faces and inlaid runes using an antler tip until glass-smooth, finishing with beeswax and horsehair to create a water-resistant sheen.
    • Wrap the bog-iron collar tightly with braided elk sinew soaked in warm wax, securing the loop end to provide a sure grip in damp environments.
    • Conclude the rite of binding by plunging the finished bodkin into a basin of freezing spring meltwater while holding an iron nail against the Isa rune, chanting the three binding staves to awaken the mechanism-arresting resonance.

Whale-Spine Needle, Stone Jaws of Silent Mound, and Greed of Red-Bearded Skapti

In the first turnings before the frost-giants laid down to become the high mountains, when the sun was still yellow like new tallow and the clouds walked low upon the heath, men did not build longhouses with iron nails. In that raw dawning, the grand chieftains of the dirt-hollows loved their amber and their twisted neck-rings more than their living daughters. When a great carl felt his heart rattle like dry peas in a gourd, he commanded three hundred thralls to dig a great belly into the gray rock of the hill. Into this belly he caused to be piled his iron broad-swords, his brass meat-kettles, his sacks of unrefined silver-dust, and the bones of forty fat oxen, so that his ghost might feast in the dark while his seed starved in the wind.

Yet the old dead were full of bitter cunning and had small trust in the men who walked above the sod. Above their meat-troughs and silver-heaps they caused their smiths to hang monstrous blocks of split granite, balanced upon thin pine pegs no thicker than an elk’s tooth. They strung the gut of sea-bears across the dark thresholds, tied to bent oak bows that slept with poisoned iron spears upon their notches. If any man of the upper world thrust his snout into the door-slit to smell the silver, a cord did snap, a peg did split, and the ceiling fell upon his spine, making his skull as flat as a summer bannock. Thus the gray barrows slept upon the moor like dead whales, and no man walked near them save when the moon was dead and his heart was twisted with famine.

Now among the northern fjords where the great bowheads blow their water-plumes into the gray mist, there lived an old barrow-warden and bone-scraper named Halldor Narrow-Eye. He was not a breaker of shield-walls; he possessed neither broad shoulder-plates nor coats of boiled pig-leather. His fingers were as long and knotty as dry birch roots, stained brown with the boiled pitch of the pine and the sour oil of the sea-beast. He had spent forty winters crawling into the damp holes where the ancient kings slept, not to strip their corpses of their brass rings, but to grease the door-pins, sweep the rat-dung from their burial-cloths, and whisper the old names so that the draugr might not rise up to strangle the calves in the pen.

In his sheepskin pouch Halldor carried a tool of strange and crooked cunning: an eight-inch spike carved from the hard jaw-timber of a bowhead whale that had perished before the first fire was struck upon the rock. Its head was capped with a ring of cold bog-metal that smelled of stagnant peat, and along its four flat ribs were scraped the three ancient cuts—Kenaz the eye that pierceth the loam, Isa the cold that chaineth the river, and Nauthiz the bitter weight that bendeth the knee. The hollows of the scratches were packed with the dust of the sun-stone, mountain mica, and the burned fat of willow-twigs.

Into Halldor’s turf-hut came a hulking carl named Red-Bearded Skapti. Skapti was a man who owned five merchant-hulks, four hundred horned cattle, and three stone-mortared storehouses stuffed to the roof-beams with smoked haddock and dyed wool. Yet his eyes were ever restless and red like a ferret’s nostrils; he could not sleep if he heard that a beggar upon the road had found a tin button in the mud.

“Up, old bone-sitter!” cried Skapti, and his breath smelled of salt grease and dried curds. “The white fog hath settled over the Ridge of the Wolf’s Tooth. In that high cairn sleepeth King Sigtrygg of the Crooked Jaw, who was buried ten generations ago with three wagons of pure river-silver and a crown beaten from the red gold of the southern dwarfs! The cattle-rot hath taken twenty of my heifers, and the traders of the western isles demand silver for their hemp. Take up thy tools, creep into Sigtrygg’s hole, and loosen the gate, or I will fire thy pine-shack and throw thy bone-spoons into the swamp!”

Halldor Narrow-Eye looked up from his grease-pot and shook his head until his grey locks rustled like dry straw. “The tomb of Sigtrygg is not an open sheep-fold, Skapti. The old ones of that blood did not love the light. His house is rigged with the teeth of the gray wolf: the flags are balanced upon hair-triggers, the door-post holdeth three swinging scythes of quenched bronze, and the ceiling is a lake of loose granite held only by a rotten hazel pin. He who goeth there with an open mouth and an eager belly will leave his limbs beneath the mountain.”

“A hazel pin is easily broken by my heavy axe!” roared Skapti, slapping the broad iron head of his wood-cleaver. “And if a stone falleth, my broad shoulders shall bear it up like an ox! Lead me to the rock, or thy throat shall be slit upon thy own threshold!”

So the old man took up his sheepskin pouch and his whale-spine needle, and led the greedy carl through the freezing drizzle to the Wolf’s Tooth. The tumulus stood high upon the scree, covered in pale lichen and black moss, its low mouth yawning between two jagged upright stones like the snout of a dead pike.

When they crept into the damp throat of the mound, the air was as foul as the bilge of a seal-boat, cold and tasting of lime-chalk and dead men’s fat. Skapti pushed forward, holding a smoking torch of tarred pine, his boots splashing carelessly in the sour sludge that coated the flagstones.

“Hold thy heavy heels, fool!” hissed Halldor, dropping upon his knees in the mud.

The old man drew forth the whale-bone needle. He did not look with his eyes, for the smoke of the pine torch was thick and blinded the sight. Instead, he laid the tapered needle against the stone lintel and tapped the dark bog-iron ring with his fingernail. The amber resin and powdered mica within the line of Kenaz flared with a faint, greasy yellow glow, and Halldor’s old ears caught a tiny, singing thrum through the dense whale-marrow—the high, trembling whine of a taut gut-cord stretched over a hidden iron trigger-wheel within the door-frame.

“Step not upon the red slate,” murmured the old warden. “Beneath that stone sleepeth an axle of four iron points, tipped with the gall of the spotted viper. If thy weight toucheth the flag, the cords will spin and the floor will turn beneath thy feet like a water-mill, dumping thee into an iron-spiked well.”

Halldor slid the long, thin needle into the narrow hairline crack between the two wall-blocks. He reached the hidden spindle and whispered the cold name of Isa.

CRICK-TINK.

A brittle, vitreous sound like spring lake-ice freezing in an instant echoed from inside the masonry. A puff of white hoarfrost drifted out from the slit. The taut cord went dead and limp; the iron ratchet was seized in a hard grip of crystalline rime.

“The wheel is asleep for a small breathing-space,” said Halldor. “Step softly across the red slate now, and do not scrape the lime from the mortar.”

They crept through the throat of the crypt, passing two dead warriors whose dried skins clung to their rib-cages like gray parchment, their skulls crushed beneath a great sandstone counterweight that had dropped two hundred winters before. Three times more the old man halted: once to probe out a spring-loaded bronze scythe that hovered over a low archway, freezing its release-latch with the whale-bone’s cold pulse; and once to anchor a collapsing ceiling-beam whose rotten oak tenon was groaning under the mountain’s weight.

At last they stood within the inner hall. There, upon a raised bench of dressed river-granite, sat the dried corpse of King Sigtrygg of the Crooked Jaw. His flesh was as black and dry as smoked beef, his empty eye-sockets were stuffed with dried marsh-moss, and upon his lap rested a heavy iron-bound casket whose lid had been cast back, showing mounds of round silver coins that shone pale and cold in the torchlight, alongside arm-rings of hammered red gold as thick as a thrall’s thumb.

“Ha!” bellowed Skapti, his eyes bulging until the red veins were like spiders upon his cheeks. “The old dead man hath kept my cattle-tribute warm! Look at the red arm-hoops! Look at the silver-wash!”

“Touch nothing save what can be lifted without shaking the bench!” warned Halldor, his knuckles white as he gripped the bodkin. “Look above thy red crown, carl!”

Directly above the corpse’s stone seat hung a vast, pointed boulder of gray trap-rock, six paces wide and as thick as four hay-wains. It was suspended by three braided copper chains, which met at a single central iron ring anchored to a sliding lever in the granite wall. From that lever ran a thick iron linkage directly down into the floor under the great treasure-casket; if the weight of the silver were lifted from the stone bench, the counterweight would trip, and the mountainous boulder would drop from its vault, sealing the burial-cell forever and grinding everything within it into dry red meal.

“I have not walked through the rain to look at gray rocks!” screamed Skapti. He threw aside his pine torch and leaped forward, thrusting his thick paws into the iron-bound chest. He seized two monstrous arm-rings of twisted gold and wrenched the chest forward to spill the silver into the sack at his belt.

THUNG-G-G.

The iron linkage shrieked in the dark! The counterweight lever snapped open like the jaw of an angry bear!

Above their heads, the three copper chains parted with a scream of sheared metal, and the immense slab of trap-rock began its terrible downward plunge!

“Halldor! The mountain falleth!” wailed Skapti, dropping his gold and throwing his thick arms over his ears like a beaten dog.

The old barrow-warden did not scream, nor did he turn to run toward the choked exit. He leaped forward upon the granite bench, thrust the four-faceted whale-bone needle directly into the shear-point where the sliding iron lever met the granite socket, and shouted with his full breath the harsh, tearing name of Nauthiz!

Lo! A flash of dull, black-red light surged from the bog-iron collar, spreading like ink through the bone shaft!

The mountain did not stop, but it shuddered in the air! The terrible slab groaned, suspended three feet above the dead king’s seat as the needle swelled with unnatural mass and impossible inertia, absorbing the whole descending crush of the hills into its eight-inch whale-timber spine! The bone creaked like the mast of a sinking ship; the iron rivets upon the collar smoked with bitter heat; white ice and black grit poured from the stone seam!

“The pin holdeth for six heartbeats, Skapti!” cried Halldor, his teeth stained with blood from the strain of his mind. “Fling thy body through the archway into the outer trench! Move thy fat hams or be crushed to meal!”

Red-Bearded Skapti did not look at the old man. He looked down at the floorboards where four great golden neck-rings had spilled from the chest. With a squeal of desperate greed, he dropped upon his belly in the dirt, clawing at the gold with both hands, shoving the heavy metal hoops into his tunic while scrambling on his knees.

“I have them! I have them both!” he brayed, laughing into the dust.

The bone bodkin reached the end of its binding stave. With a sharp, vitreous report like a thunderbolt splitting an iceberg, the whale-jaw needle snapped in two! The rime dissolved into a spray of hot steam; the bog-iron collar crumpled like dried leaves; and the great gray stone dropped home.

KRAK-BOOM.

The impact blew the tar-smoke and dust out of the tumulus like the breath of a furnace. Halldor Narrow-Eye, thrown backward by the kinetic recoil of the broken stave, rolled through the archway into the outer trench just as the lintel collapsed behind him.

When the dust settled and the silence of the earth returned, the tomb of Sigtrygg was sealed forever. Beneath forty thousand wagon-loads of granite and black peat lay the king’s bones, the ancient silver, and Red-Bearded Skapti. His fingers were still curled tightly around the twisted red gold, but his belly, his broad back, his heavy boots, and his greedy ferret-eyes were crushed as thin as a dried birch leaf beneath the mountain’s heel.

Halldor Narrow-Eye stood alone upon the rainy moor. In his blistered palm he held only the bog-iron loop and four inches of splintered, cold whale-bone, its Kenaz groove dead and black. He looked at the ruined mound, spat into the wet heather, and walked down the scree toward his smoke-hut, knowing that the earth always closeth its mouth upon those who cannot see the trap for the shine of the bait.

Moral of the Story: The fool who entereth the dark chambers of life with an insatiable appetite is blinded by the glitter of his prize, imagining that his brute strength can stay the falling sky; but the prudent worker knoweth that every treasure is balanced upon a hidden cord of consequence, and he who lingereth to gorge his sack when the binding-peg is failing will find that the earth taketh his marrow as payment for the gold he could not bear to leave behind.

    • Mica-Glow Line (Passive): While sweeping the tool along seams, cracks, or keyholes, the amber-and-mica inlay glows faintly when within 3 inches of concealed mechanisms. The user cannot trigger a trap as a result of a standard failed check while actively probing for it (only an Fumble triggers a mechanism accidentally during search).
    • Rime-Lock Stave (Active – Action): The user inserts the bone bodkin into a mechanical trigger or gear mechanism and spends 2 Magic Points. The moving parts are locked in brittle rime-frost for 10 minutes. During this period, the mechanism cannot fire or release, granting a Bonus Die on Mechanical Repair or Locksmith checks made to permanently disarm or bypass it.
    • Anchor of the Dire Need (Active – Reaction): When a mechanical deadfall, spring-scythe, or pressure trap is accidentally triggered within 2 yards, the user spends 2 Magic Points and jams the bodkin into the moving component. The user makes a DEX check (or Mechanical Repair check). On a success, the bodkin halts the trap mid-release for 1 combat round (approx. 6 seconds), allowing all investigators within the threat area an immediate action to dive clear of the hazard without taking damage.

Blades in the Dark

The Barrow-Delver’s Bodkin

Arcane Infiltration Implement (1 Load)

  • Description:A slender whale-bone probe wrapped in waxed sinew and banded with bog iron. Inlaid with ancient runes that sense physical tension and temporarily freeze clockwork, springs, and counterweights.
  • Mechanics:
    • Whisper of the Taut Cord (Passive): When you survey a vault, corridor, or threshold for concealed traps, tripwires, or mechanical triggers, your position is never worse than Risky, and you gain +1 Potency to gather information using Survey or Tinker.
    • Mica-Glow Line (Passive): When you Tinker to bypass or disarm mechanical safeguards, the glowing runes guide your hand, allowing you to ignore penalties from total darkness or tight, blind crevices.
    • Rime-Lock Stave (Active): When you attempt to disarm, pick, or bypass a complex mechanical device, trap, or spring-lock, you may spend 1 Stress to flash-freeze the internal tumblers. This provides Great Effect on your Tinker roll and ensures the mechanism cannot prematurely trigger even on a 1–3 result.
    • Anchor of the Dire Need (Active): When a mechanical trap, collapse, or deadfall is sprung, you may check this item’s box to count as Special Armor specifically to resist consequences stemming from the springing trap. You jam the bodkin into the mechanism, stopping its release for just long enough to pull yourself and an ally clear of the blast or strike zone.

Dungeons & Dragons (2024 Edition)

Barrow-Delver’s Bone Bodkin

Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)

  • Item Profile:
    • Slot: Hand (Held Tool)
    • Weight: 0.4 lbs.
  • Properties:
    • Whisper of the Taut Cord (Passive): While holding this bodkin, you have Advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to detect nonmagical traps, concealed tripwires, and pressure plates within 10 feet of you.
    • Mica-Glow Line (Passive): When you use the bodkin to search for or examine a mechanism, you cannot accidentally trigger a trap as a result of a failed check.
    • Rime-Lock Stave (Action): You insert the bodkin into a mechanical trap, lock, or gear mechanism within 5 feet of you. The mechanism becomes coated in magical frost, preventing it from springing, firing, or closing for 10 minutes. While frozen, any Dexterity check made with Thieves’ Tools to permanently disarm the trap or pick the lock is made with Advantage. This property can be used twice, and all expended uses are regained when you finish a Short or Long Rest.
    • Anchor of the Dire Need (Reaction): When a mechanical trap within 5 feet of you is triggered by you or a creature you can see, you can use your Reaction to jam the bodkin into the mechanism. The trap is frozen mid-trigger until the end of the current turn. Any creature in the trap’s area of effect can immediately use its reaction to move up to half its Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks, potentially exiting the hazard before it activates. Once you use this property, you cannot use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

  • Rime-Lock Stave (Action):Twice per day, the user can insert the bodkin into a mechanical trap or lock mechanism. The internal pins and gears are coated in frost, immobilizing the trigger for 10 minutes and allowing safe passage or an automatic success on any subsequent check to dismantle it.
  • Anchor of the Dire Need (Reaction):Once per day, when a mechanical trap or falling hazard is triggered within 5 feet, the wielder may immediately make a Dexterity save. On a success, the bodkin halts the mechanism in place for 1 round (approx. 6 seconds), allowing all creatures in the hazard zone to escape unharmed before the trap resolves.
