Ritual 37 of the Liminal Compass of Da’at

Lore

Devised within the sequestered observatories of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn across Saṃsāra, this delicate brass sextant-compass was fashioned by early initiates seeking to map the invisible fractures across the Tree of Life. Tied esoterically to the pseudo-sephirah of Da’at (the Threshold of the Abyss), the device acknowledges that reality is not an unbroken wall, but a tapestry of interlaced dimensions. Wayfarers and rift-watchers rely on the instrument to sense the subtle thinning of the dimensional veil, navigate spatial tears, and safely cross momentary fissures between the physical plane and the Astral light.

Description

A palm-sized, folding astronomical compass fashioned from polished antique brass, featuring a gimbaled, free-floating needle suspended not in air, but within a vacuum-sealed vial of crystalline quicksilver. The exterior ring is etched with the thirty-two paths of wisdom, interspersed with archaic Greek and Hebrew letters denoting the celestial gates. When unfolded, an adjustable sighting prism made of smoky Iceland spar aligns with a graduated arc. The needle does not point to the magnetic north of Saṃsāra; instead, it swings toward the nearest localized distortion in spacetime, spinning erratically when spatial boundaries fracture.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Tier / Rarity: Tier 1 / Common
  • Weight: 1.0 lb
  • Durability: 25/25
  • Attunement: Requires 10 minutes of meditative alignment under an open sky or doorway, tracing the Hexagram of Saturn and vibrating the divine name YHVH Elohim.
  • Proficiency Required: Astromancy / Dimensional Lore / Esoteric Navigation (Tier 1)

Passive Magic

  • Spatial Shear Scenting: While carrying the compass in hand or wearing it openly at the breast, the bearer intuitively feels a cold, tingling pressure behind their eyes whenever an active dimensional rift, teleportation residual, or spatial anomaly exists within 30 feet, even if concealed or invisible.
  • Tethered Step: The bearer’s subtle body is anchored to the prime material matrix; effects, spells, or anomalies that attempt to involuntarily displace, teleport, or phase the user across dimensions without their consent suffer disadvantage or require one additional degree of effort to take hold.

Activable Magic

  • Assay Dimensional Fracture (Action): The user raises the folding prism to one eye and aligns the sighting arm with an environmental focal point while reciting the vibration of Da’at.
    • Effect: The smoky spar lens reveals the structural integrity of local spacetime, displaying the exact perimeter, destination frequency, and stability duration of any rift, portal, or spatial fold within 60 feet.
    • Cost: At will (requires 1 uninterrupted round of sighting).
  • Part the Veil’s Seam (Action): The user rotates the outer brass ring to align the silver needle with the geomantic glyph of the threshold and steps forward while striking the compass rim with their thumb.
    • Effect: Reality folds momentarily around the user, allowing them to slip into a micro-fissure and instantly reappear in an unoccupied space they can see within 15 feet. This movement ignores physical obstacles, floor hazards, and mundane barriers, leaving behind only a faint, ozone-scented pop.
    • Cooldown: 3 uses per Long Rest.

Commerce and Acquisition of the Liminal Compass of Da’at

  • Astromancers’ Guild Observatories and Horizon Scriptoriums: Perched high atop celestial towers, mountain minarets, and high-plateau charting halls across Saṃsāra, these serene establishments smell of beeswax, lamp oil, and parchment. Guild masters and certified wayfinders inspect the compass by balancing it upon a gimbaled bronze arm and exposing the Iceland spar prism to a calibrated beam of prism-split celestial light to ensure the mercury-suspended needle responds to planar drag. An avatar wishing to sell a salvaged or inherited compass receives a clean bank credit of 12 silver pieces logged into their official planetary ledger. Adventurers, navigators, and horizon-scouts seeking to buy an authenticated instrument are charged the standard scholarly price of 15 silver pieces, while sworn apprentices and guild initiates can acquire one at an academic concession rate of 13 silver and 2 copper pieces.
  • Hermetic Sanctuaries and Threshold Temples: Situated within hidden cloisters, vaulted gate-temples, and esoteric monasteries dedicated to the abyss of Da’at and the mysteries of transition, these sanctums treat the compass not as a mundane sextant, but as an indispensable key for threshold crossings. Initiates test the artifact by holding it within an consecrated doorframe, reciting the Lesser Hexagram to verify the alignment of the thirty-two paths of wisdom. Liquidating a compass here yields a deposit of 13 silver pieces to the seller’s account. Uninitiated seekers wishing to purchase this sacred navigational focus must contribute an offering of 17 silver pieces, whereas initiated fraternity brothers and sisters in good standing can purchase it for 13 silver and 8 copper pieces.
  • Frontier Waystations and Rift-Border Outposts: Located on the edges of uncharted planar scars, wild dimensional salt-flats, and shattered perimeter gates, these fortified trading posts cater to caravans and expedition parties venturing into unstable borderlands. The station-master tests the needle by holding it near a bottled pocket of planar residual dust to watch for immediate, steady tracking. Selling a compass here yields a quick frontier payout of 11 silver pieces credited to a trade ledger slip. Because a reliable dimensional warning device is literally a matter of survival in regions plagued by spontaneous spatial tears, the outfitter sells them at a premium price of 16 silver pieces.
  • Curio Dealers and Astrolabe Pawnshops: Crowded among the narrow alleyways of bustling trade ports and mercantile hubs, these eccentric curiosity cabinets are cluttered with brass clockwork, dusty glass lenses, broken chronometers, and maritime quadrant tables. The shopkeeper often views the piece simply as a fine piece of antique brass instrumentation with an unusual, non-magnetic quicksilver needle. An avatar seeking fast liquidity can sell the compass for a rapid cash payout of 9 silver pieces credited to their bank balance. Discerning collectors and savvy hedge-mages browsing through the velvet-lined trays can negotiate to buy the compass for an uncertified bargain of 14 silver pieces.
  • Undercity Black Markets and Smugglers’ Coves: Hidden deep within shadowed sewer junctions, subterranean ruins, and unlawful anchorages where planar contraband, unlicensed relics, and fugitive gate-runners circulate, a device that can bypass solid barriers and detect localized rift-fissures is prized beyond measure. In places where city watch checkpoints and enchanted security wards block standard corridors, a reliable means of executing a silent, short-range planar hop commands fierce interest. A smuggler or thief selling a compass to an undercity fence operates completely outside the World Bank system, receiving 20 silver pieces in physical, untraceable coin. Any rogue operative or outlaw infiltrator looking to acquire the device without leaving a paper trail must pay a steep black-market figure of 25 silver pieces in hard physical currency.

Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Liminal Compass of Da’at

  • Planar Borderlands and Unstable Dimensional Wastes: Where reality frays and the boundary between Saṃsāra and foreign planes wears thin, survival depends entirely on spatial vigilance. Defensively, while trekking across a volatile salt-flat riddled with invisible rift-shears, the user relies on Spatial Shear Scenting. Feeling the cold, prickling pressure behind their eyes, they halt the caravan seconds before a supply wagon rolls into a jagged, microscopic tear that would cleanly sever an axle or amputate a draft-beast’s leg. Offensively, when ambushed by extraplanar predators that phase in and out of the material plane, the user lifts the smoky Iceland spar prism and activates Assay Dimensional Fracture. Pinpointing the precise point in empty air where the beast intends to materialize from the slipstream, the party lays an immediate ambush—firing readied crossbow bolts and spell-fire into the re-entry seam the microsecond the creature emerges.
  • Cramped Subterranean Dungeons and Ancient Crypts: In narrow subterranean vaults where dead-ends and heavy stone portcullises dictate life or death, manipulating the local geometry circumvents physical obstacles. Defensively, when cornered in a sealed dead-end corridor with a crushing wall trap or a lethal rolling boulder bearing down, the user activates Part the Veil’s Seam. Striking the compass rim, they slip through a micro-fissure in reality, blinking safely fifteen feet past the descending stone barrier or through the locked iron grating of an adjacent burial niche, leaving their pursuers to crash harmlessly against bare stone. Offensively, when facing a shielded skeletal phalanx or an armored sentinel blocking a choke-point with heavy tower shields, the user blinks directly behind the enemy vanguard, instantly breaking their defensive formation and driving a blade into the exposed joints of the enemy line from the rear.
  • Bustling Urban Centers and Fortified Manor Estates: In densely populated cities, vertical architecture and tight security checkpoints pose distinct navigational challenges. Defensively, during an urban pursuit through crowded market streets, a user being chased by city watch crossbowmen or hostile bounty hunters snaps the compass closed, rounds a corner, and triggers Part the Veil’s Seam. Vanishing with a soft pop of ozone, they bypass a solid ten-foot brick garden wall into a private courtyard, utterly severing the line of sight and scattering their pursuers’ tracking scent. Offensively, when infiltrating an estate guarded by reinforced iron doors and intricate mechanical locks, the user raises the spar prism to locate minor geometric stress fractures along the doorframe. Using Part the Veil’s Seam, they phase cleanly through the barred entrance into the vault room without setting off tripwires, pressure plates, or mechanical alarms.
  • Open Steppes, High Peaks, and Forest Canopies: In wide-open outdoor terrain, natural hazards and sudden aerial assaults leave avatars dangerously exposed. Defensively, when ambushed on a sheer mountain ledge by a swooping wyvern or manticore aiming to knock the party into a thousand-foot chasm, the user’s passive Tethered Step prevents them from being involuntarily hurled or telekinetically displaced off the cliff face. When the beast swoops low for a lethal strike, a quick activation of Part the Veil’s Seam repositions the user fifteen feet laterally onto solid bedrock, causing the diving predator to strike empty air and graze the stone wall. Offensively, when enemy skirmishers and snipers entrench themselves atop an inaccessible boulder or in the high branches of an ironwood tree, the user sites the elevation through the compass prism and executes a vertical blink, landing directly beside the archers on their high perch to engage in sudden melee before they can draw sidearms.
  • Naval Vessels and Flooded Canal Systems: Aboard ships, barges, or waterlogged sewer canals, spatial mobility often determines the outcome of boarding actions. Defensively, when tossed overboard into churning, predator-infested rapids or trapped belowdecks as water fills a torpedoed compartment, the user aligns the compass and uses Part the Veil’s Seam to phase fifteen feet straight up through the timber decking, reappearing safely on the dry upper deck. Offensively, during a ship-to-ship boarding skirmish across open water, the user does not need grappling hooks or swing-ropes; they step off the prow, blink across the churning gap straight onto the opposing vessel’s helm-deck, and disable the enemy captain or sever the rudder rigging before the enemy crew can react.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: When the rim is struck and the divine vibration of Da’at is intoned, the quicksilver suspension inside the central capsule flashes with a sharp, electric-indigo luminescence. The silver needle snaps in place and fires a hair-thin beam of cerulean light through the Iceland spar prism, slicing through the air ahead. Across the user’s field of vision, the surrounding environment appears momentarily doubled—a ghosted, desaturated negative image of reality where doorways, cracks, and open spaces outline themselves in trembling violet seams.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers see the brass instrument burst with a tight, radiant ring of blue-violet sparks that circle the user’s hand. As the bearer steps forward, their physical form blurs like ink dropped in rushing water, folding horizontally into a microscopic point of indigo light before reappearing fifteen feet away with a sharp distortion ripple through the air.
    • Positives: The cerulean targeting beam clearly highlights viable landing points and illuminates concealed dimensional micro-shears that would otherwise remain invisible.
    • Negatives: The stark flash of violet sparks and radiant indigo light instantly ruins night vision and signals the user’s exact trajectory to watchful sentries.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: Sound instantly compresses into a muffled, vacuum-sealed hush, like being plunged deep underwater. A high-frequency crystal chime rings out as the needle catches the seam, followed immediately by an abrupt, percussive implosion—an acoustic pop akin to a thunderclap held inside a bottle—as displaced air rushes to fill the vacated space upon re-entry.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers hear the rapid, sharp click-clack of the brass gimbal spinning at impossible speed, immediately capped by a distinct, sharp crack of atmospheric displacement where the user vanished and reappeared.
    • Positives: The acoustic drop gives absolute auditory confirmation of the jump’s completion, cutting through deafening combat noises or thunder.
    • Negatives: The atmospheric displacement snap is sharp and distinctive, echoing loudly down closed stone corridors or quiet vaults.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: A crisp, stinging rush of pure ozone, burnt quartz, and chilled high-altitude air washes through the sinuses, carrying a faint metallic scent reminiscent of an approaching electrical storm.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within five paces catches a lingering whiff of struck flint, static discharge, and faint traces of cold vapor.
    • Positives: The intense ozone burst shocks the nervous system awake, immediately shaking off feelings of drowsiness, lethargy, or mild gas inhalation.
    • Negatives: The pungent ozone smell hangs in stagnant, unventilated subterranean rooms for several minutes, providing an easy scent trail for tracking beasts.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: An immediate, sharp copper tang registers on the sides of the tongue, accompanied by a dry, carbonated sensation as if holding a nine-volt battery against the palate.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers perceive no taste, though they may see the user grimace slightly and smack their lips upon arriving on solid ground.
    • Positives: The metallic taste acts as a psychosomatic anchor, grounding the mind against dissociative nausea caused by crossing planar folds.
    • Negatives: Leaves a sour, metallic residue in the mouth that lingers, temporarily dulling the ability to detect subtle poisons or tainted food.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: The brass casing turns bitingly cold in the hand, frosted with a momentary skim of rime ice. As the user slips into the transit seam, the sensation of bodily weight vanishes entirely, replaced by a momentary, zero-gravity pull that feels like being tugged forward through a tight velvet sleeve before gravity reasserts itself on solid stone.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The air around the user drops rapidly in temperature, kicking up a sudden, brief outward gust of chilling wind that flutters nearby cloaks and loose papers.
    • Positives: The brief absence of kinetic friction sheds grasping hands, entangling webs, or grappling holds instantly during the phase step.
    • Negatives: The sub-zero chill of the brass can numb un-gloved fingertips, slightly hindering fine manual dexterity for a few seconds following activation.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Spatial Geodetic Awareness:
      • User’s Perspective: For a split second during transit, the user’s awareness detaches from three-dimensional space. They perceive the room not as a collection of surfaces, but as a folded geometric matrix. Distances collapse into vectors; they intuitively calculate the thickness of intervening walls, the hollow density of adjacent cells, and the gravitational pull of the bedrock below, knowing exactly where empty spatial pockets reside without seeing them directly.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Mystics watching via astral sight perceive a geometric hyper-cube of translucent indigo lines briefly superimposing itself over the room, collapsing down into the point where the user re-emerges.
      • Positives: Guarantees that the destination point is truly unoccupied, preventing catastrophic teleportation mishaps such as materializing inside solid stone or living tissue.
      • Negatives: The sensory input of four-dimensional space can cause momentary vertigo or a phantom sensation of falling when normal perspective returns.
    • Abyssal Veil Clairvoyance:
      • User’s Perspective: Looking through the spar lens, the user witnesses the membrane separating the material plane of Saṃsāra from the Outer Void. Stable reality appears as a tightly woven fabric of golden geometric threads, while nearby rifts, temporal anomalies, or planar intrusions manifest as jagged, unraveling black gashes leaking faint violet mist and humming with cold discordance.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Extraplanar or psionic entities nearby notice the astral symbol of the non-Sephirah Da’at flickering above the compass like an open, unblinking eye of dark light.
      • Positives: Allows the bearer to accurately gauge the stability and danger of natural portals, preventing accidental exposure to planar hazards.
      • Negatives: Peering directly into the thin seams of the Void induces a creeping existential dread, making the material world feel fragile and paper-thin for hours afterward.

Fabrication Protocol 37: Liminal Compass of Da’at

  • Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (aligned with Void, spatial displacement, or astral resonance).
    • Three ingots of antique brass (low lead, high resonance alloy).
    • One flawless crystal of natural Iceland spar (optical calcite).
    • One dram of distilled alchemical quicksilver.
    • One measure of fine sterling silver wire (for the needle and balance pins).
    • One vial of heavy borosilicate glass (vacuum-rated).
    • One yard of vegetable-tanned leather cord.
    • Three drops of camphor oil mixed with powdered lapis lazuli.
  • Tools Required:
    • One jeweler’s precision lathe and micro-drills.
    • One set of diamond-tipped gravers and geometric scribes.
    • One lapidary cabbing wheel and diamond polishing paste.
    • One mercury spirit lamp and vacuum hand-pump.
    • One brass indexing dividing head (for radial arc calibration).
    • One non-magnetic set of brass calipers and counterweights.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Clockwork / Precision Instrument Crafting: Rank 3 or higher.
    • Lapidary / Lens-Grinding: Rank 2 or higher.
    • Esoteric Runecraft / Astromancy: Rank 2 or higher.
    • Alchemy: Rank 1 or higher.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Machine the brass ingots on the lathe into the main circular chassis, folding sighting arm, and outer concentric ring, ensuring the outer rim rotates smoothly on micro-grooves.
    • Mount the circular casing onto the indexing dividing head; engrave the thirty-two paths of wisdom around the perimeter, alternating with archaic Greek and Hebrew celestial gate characters.
    • Cut and grind the Iceland spar crystal along its natural rhombohedral cleavage into a triangular sighting prism, polishing the optical faces until double refraction is crystal clear.
    • Mount the prism into the folding brass sighting arm, securing it with tension screws calibrated to the 60-degree arc.
    • Draw and anneal the sterling silver into a balanced four-point needle, chasing the geomantic sigils of the threshold into the spine.
    • Form the borosilicate glass into an airtight, spherical-bottomed capsule that nests within the central brass gimbal.
    • Introduce the distilled alchemical quicksilver into the glass capsule, float the silver needle atop the meniscus, draw a partial vacuum with the hand-pump, and hermetically flame-seal the glass aperture.
    • Pulverize the Tier 1 Magic Crystal in an agate mortar, mixing the fine dust with the lapis-camphor tincture to create a luminous void-ink.
    • Inlay the void-ink into the thirty-two path engravings along the brass ring, setting the compound by heating the assembly gently over the spirit lamp while vibrating the divine name YHVH Elohim.
    • Assemble the gimbal rings, casing, and sighting arm using non-magnetic brass balance pins, testing the needle’s free swing through all three rotational axes.
    • Tie the vegetable-tanned leather cord through the top brass mounting eyelet, and consecrate the instrument by sighting through an open doorway at midnight while tracing the Hexagram of Saturn.

Turning Needle in the Water of Quick-Silver, and Over-Stepping Caravan-Warden Who Did Lose His Shadow Behind Folded Tent of Sky

In the days of the dried canals, when the great salt-mud was yet green with weed-tongues and the sky did bear seven small pale moons like blind sheep in a blue yard, there walked upon the high dust-road of the province of Khem-Gaza a chief wagon-steerer whose name upon the baked reed-slates is Overseer-Lord Vorak-Shul. He was a master of ninety-nine long carts banded with ox-copper, and three hundred horned yaks whose hoofs were tipped with brass plates so they would not crack upon the stony passes. It was the boast of his mouth, spoken in every tavern-tent from the dry marshes to the wall of the Seven Sinks, that no mountain-crevice had ever spilled a jar of his ginger-resin, and no night-fog had ever caused his lead-mule to take a crooked footstep.

Now it was the custom of the great caravan to carry the yellow silk-cakes and the pressed cakes of mountain-tea across the high gap called the Notch of the Crying Flutes. But in the seventeenth year of the reign of the Iron-Girdle King, the high road was swallowed by an un-making. The earth did not merely break with a ditch; the air itself did curl back like a fried leaf! Where the road had run smooth between the two cliffs of black slate, there hung a great grey knot of wind that had neither top nor belly. Those mule-boys who cast pebbles into the mist did hear no falling sound, nor did the stones strike bottom; but rather, three days later, the pebbles did fall out of the dry sky above the camp-fires, stone-cold and covered in blue rime-frost!

Vorak-Shul sat upon his iron stool and tore his beard-hair, crying: “The tea-cakes will turn sour in their wool wraps! If I take the ox-carts by the lower river-bend, the journey will eat forty more waters, and the market-masters of Ur-Phar will pay me only three copper pence for what is worth sixty pots of clear silver!”

He called to his tent the star-measurers and the bone-casters of the border-towns. But they did only burn foul bird-grease and cast sheep-ribs into the embers, saying: “The gap is eaten by the Maw of the Abyss. The ancient path of the Tree is snapped in twain between the crown and the kingdom. No cart with wheels of wood can cross a road where the Left Hand hath forgotten the Right Hand, for whatever passeth into the knot shall be untwisted like rotten thread!”

Vorak-Shul did beat the star-measurers with his heavy ox-whip until their hats fell off, and he swore by the teeth of the Great Bull that he would drive his wagons through the grey smoke even if he must harness the mountain-demons to his axle-trees.

Now on the evening of the second moon-change, while the caravan-hands did huddle around the dung-fires weeping for their lost silver, there approached the camp a thin, grey-clad initiate from the hidden sanctuary of Da’at—which is the Non-Place where the knowing of things is hidden. He had neither staff nor mule, and upon his breast was hung by a hide-lace a rounded box of yellow brass, no larger than the sweet water-melon of the gardens.

The wanderer sat by the dung-smoke and warmed his palms. He looked upon the giant Overseer and said with a dry tongue: “Why dost thou curse the open seam, wagon-man? When a carpet is folded in the middle, the spider doth not weep because the border hath moved; he steppeth across the fold, because he knoweth where the weave hath doubled.”

Vorak-Shul seized the wanderer by the cloth of his shoulder. “Canst thou carry ninety-nine carts across a hole that hath no bottom, beggar of the road?”

“The hole hath no bottom,” said the quiet man, “because it hath no sides, and what hath no sides cannot hold a cart. But between this pebble where thy foot resteth and that grey cliff half a league beyond, the skin of the sky is only pinched together like the mouth of a meal-sack. One needeth only a true measure to walk upon the seam.”

He unlatched the brass lid of his box. Inside was no dry lodestone pointing to the iron-hills, but a glass vessel shaped like a bird’s egg, wherein floated a needle of pure silver bathed in a heavy water of quick-silver that shone like polished moon-metal. Above the glass was an arm of brass bearing a three-cornered stone of cold Iceland spar, clear as ice from the deep glacier.

The initiate rose and walked toward the spinning grey fog of the chasm, holding the round box in his left palm. He aligned the little stone prism with the black cliff on the far side of the abyss, and with his right thumb he did tap the edge of the brass ring three times, vibrating from his chest the deep word: YHVH Elohim… let the boundary be known.

Behold! The quick-silver egg did burn with a sharp, cold lightning of deep indigo!

A thin beam of blue light, slender like the thread of an un-spun cocoon, shot forth from the Iceland spar and struck the center of the spinning void. Where the beam touched the grey smoke, the air did split open with a sound like a wet sheepskin torn across a butcher’s knee! The caravan-men fell upon their bellies, for they saw that the great empty gulf was not empty at all; it was cross-hatched with sixty-four glowing threads of trembling violet wire, like a great fish-weir woven by giants!

The initiate stepped out into the empty sky. His boots did not plunge downward; they struck the violet lines with a sound like iron ringing upon an anvil. He walked across the gulf of four hundred paces in the time it taketh an old woman to blow up her porridge-fire, and when he reached the far slate cliff, he turned and beckoned to the camp.

Vorak-Shul let out a great shout of belly-laughter. “The road is found! The road is found!”

He did not pray, nor did he offer the initiate a bowl of warm broth or a measure of grain. Instead, he drew his short iron slaughter-knife and said to his three swiftest teamsters: “Go behind the ridge! Slit the neck of the grey beggar before he shutteth the blue thread, and bring me the little brass clock with the egg of quick-silver! For if I hold that box, no toll-gate in the three kingdoms can shut my wagons, and the mountains themselves shall be my turnpike!”

The teamsters did creep through the high rocks, but the wanderer was not there to be taken; on the rock where he had stood was only a little heap of grey salt and a faint scent of lightning-burns. The brass box, however, lay resting upon the flat stone of the cliff-edge, its needle spinning gently in the heavy silver oil.

Vorak-Shul crossed the violet threads on his own fat feet, panting with sweat, and seized the compass with both fists. “Mine!” he bellowed to the clouds. “Mine is the eye that peeketh through the sky-coat!”

He would not wait for the sun to rise, nor would he let the yaks rest their legs. He hitched the first twenty wagons of heavy ginger-resin and yellow silks, and he stood upon the high seat of the lead-cart, holding the brass compass in his hairy fist.

The oldest teamster, an ancient grey-beard who had driven wagons across the salt-flats for fifty winters, caught the bridle of the lead-yak and cried: “Master Vorak-Shul, stay the team! The needle in the quick-silver is trembling like a trapped beetle! The blue beam is not straight; it kinketh like a broken reed! We must wait until the seven moons are set, for the seam of the sky is narrow, and our wagons are loaded heavy with lead-jars!”

“Out of the path, dried dung-cake!” roared Vorak-Shul, and he struck the old teamster across the temples with his heavy brass-butted whip. “The needle showeth the way, and I am the master of the needle! Drive on, ye dog-sons, or I shall skin the mules with my own teeth!”

He struck the rim of the compass with his thumb, shouting the holy name as he had heard it, but spitting the words out like a man bargaining for cheap leeks in the fish-row.

The Iceland spar flared, but the light was not the cool, clean cerulean of the initiate. It was a sick, greasy purple, like the eye of an unburied goat left in the summer sun. The needle in the glass egg spun around and around until the silver wire grew red with heat, and from the quick-silver came a thin, whistling shriek like water dropped into a furnace.

The lead-wagon rolled out onto the violet threads.

At first, the wheels hummed true upon the glowing lines. But Vorak-Shul was filled with the hot lust of speed. He whipped the horned yaks until their nostrils poured white foam; he turned the sighting-prism this way and that, trying to cut a shorter path through the middle of the sky-crease, caring nothing for the forty-two paths of wisdom engraved upon the brass ring.

Suddenly, with the sharp crack of an iron bar snapping under forty tons of stone, the middle seam of the crossing gave way!

The thirty-two paths of the brass ring did not part; they twisted! The space between the front wheels of the lead-wagon and the rear wheels did become thirty leagues wide in an instant, while the height between the cart-seat and the ground was made into nothing at all!

A wind blew out of the crack—not a wind of air, but a wind of un-formed time!

The twenty carts of ginger-resin and silk did fold up like sheets of wet parchment, sliding sideways into the narrow purple slit between the minutes. The teamsters screamed, but their screams did not fly through the air; their voices were turned into little balls of blue hail that fell harmlessly upon the rocks below. The horned yaks were stretched out long like wool yarn upon a distaff, and their brass hoof-caps did vanish into yesterday morning, while their horns were blown into next winter’s snows!

As for Overseer Vorak-Shul, he did not fall down to the rocks, nor was he crushed by the cart-timbers.

Because his fat hands held fast to the sacred brass casing, his flesh was pinned to the threshold of the Abyss. The needle in the quick-silver snapped into five crooked pieces, and with its snapping, Vorak-Shul’s body was sliced away from his living shadow!

His flesh—his thick ears, his red beard, his belly of goat-fat, and his iron boots—was cast back upon the hard slate of the Notch of the Crying Flutes, where he lay as a flat, dead stone, cold and stiff like an empty flour-sack.

But his living shadow—his breath, his greed, his eyes that looked ever for shortcuts, and his terror—was caught behind the Iceland spar within the non-space of Da’at. There he walketh still, between the skin of the sky and the lining of the cloud-coat, pacing three steps forward and three steps backward upon a thread of violet light that hath neither start nor stop. He seeth the wagons of the world roll by upon the dust-roads below, and he reacheth out his thin hands of smoke to clutch the silver pots, but his fingers pass through them like water through an old sieve.

On quiet nights, when the seven small moons are hidden by high frost-clouds and the wind whisteleth through the Notch of the Crying Flutes, the teamsters of the salt-roads sit around their camp-fires and listen. For from the empty air, two cubits above the ground where no stone resteth, they hear the sharp, clear pop of an ozone-bubble breaking, followed by the dry, rattling click of a brass rim struck by a ghost’s thumb, and a thin, weeping voice that waileth from the crack of the sky:

“The needle… the needle was straight… but the cart was too wide for the seam…”

And on the rocks below, half-buried in the shale, the little brass compass lieth still. Its quick-silver is clear once more, its silver needle is whole and pointing toward the stars, waiting for a hand that knoweth how to measure the gap with balance and a quiet heart.

Moral of the Story: He who vieweth the hidden thresholds of the world merely as a shortcut for his own greed, caring nothing for the sacred geometry that keepeth reality whole, shall find that while he may force open the seams of the sky, the void careth nothing for his burdens, and a man who over-steppeth the wisdom of the threshold must leave his soul behind the door.
