Qigong 312 of the Whirling Silk Stride

  • Lore: In the open-air courtyards and river wharves of the island nation of Banpo, street performers and courtly entertainers often dance atop narrow wooden posts set into the riverbanks. Early practitioners of martial dance discovered that rhythmic breath control and fluid footwork could channel the volatile magic of Saṃsāra into continuous physical momentum. Crafted by local artisans who cater to wandering troupes and festive acrobats, these silk ribbons and copper-belled anklets were developed to harmonize an avatar’s internal energy with the external rhythm of performance. Rather than acting as rigid martial armor, they use the principles of bodily harmony to turn every step, leap, and turn into a flowing, defensive exercise that maintains physical balance amid chaotic crowds and sudden skirmishes.
  • Description: A pair of ankle wraps woven from pale lilac and ivory raw silk, edged with slender braided cords of silver-spun thread. Fastened beneath each wrap is a polished copper band bearing fine spiral engravings that trace the path of energetic circulation down the heels. Three miniature, spherical copper bells dangle from tiny rings along the outer edge of each foot. Rather than ringing with a loud clatter, the bells emit a soft, crystalline chime tuned to the cadence of the avatar’s breathing. When the wearer steps, shifts, or twirls, faint trails of translucent violet light brush the air around their ankles, leaving the scent of crushed sweetgrass behind with each stride.

  • Passive Magic:
    • Rhythm of the Flowing Stream: While this item is attuned and openly worn, the avatar’s rhythmic footsteps harmonize with terrain variations. The avatar ignores minor movement penalties caused by wet wood, loose sand, shallow mud, or slick cobblestones, and gains an advantage roll on saving throws made to avoid falling prone.
    • Kinetic Twirl Dispersion: When the avatar is targeted by a physical melee attack, the flowing motion of their continuous dance helps deflect direct momentum. The first bludgeoning or slashing attack that targets the avatar in any round has its incoming damage reduced by 1 point, as the silk ribbons disperse the impact along the curve of the avatar’s step.
    • Breath-Guided Grace: The constant jingling of the tuned copper bells prompts the avatar into a calming, unhurried breathing cycle. The avatar gains a +1 bonus on saving throws against conditions that impair movement or induce mental panic, such as the Hindered, Shaken, or Frightened conditions.
  • Activable Magic:
    • Pivoting Whirl:
      • Action Cost: 1 Reaction
      • Trigger: A visible foe within 5 feet initiates a melee attack against the avatar.
      • Effect: The avatar executes an instantaneous pirouette on the balls of their feet, exhaling sharply through the nose to release a puff of violet kinetic air from the silk streamers. The avatar gains a temporary +1 bonus to their Armor Check against that specific triggering attack. If the attack misses, the avatar may immediately glide up to 5 feet into an unoccupied space without provoking retaliatory strikes. Usable twice per day, resetting after a long rest.
    • Grand Jeté Stance:
      • Action Cost: 1 Action
      • Effect: The avatar draws a deep, centering breath into the lower abdomen, taps the copper bands together, and launches into a buoyant leap. For the duration of their turn, the avatar’s jump distance and leaping height are doubled, allowing them to vault clean over obstacles, low fences, or enemy defensive lines. Upon landing on both feet, the avatar immediately recovers 1 health point as their life energy settles smoothly into the ground. Usable once per combat encounter.
    • Crescendo Step:
      • Action Cost: 1 Action
      • Effect: The avatar performs a sweeping spin and brings their heel down firmly against the ground while focusing their Mind’s Eye on the copper bells. A resonant musical chime reverberates through the surface within a 10-foot radius. All allies standing within the area of effect feel their posture steady, removing the Flat-Footed or Dazed condition immediately. Usable once per day.

Commerce and Acquisition of Whirling Silk Anklets

  • Performance Wardrobe Boutiques and Festival Haberdasheries:
    • Setting: Situated in vibrant entertainment quarters, near open-air amphitheaters, or along the festive market plazas of river cities like Banpo, these colorful storefronts cater to street troupes, court entertainers, and acrobat avatars. The shop is draped in shimmering banners, colorful silks, and ribbons suspended from cedar racks. Glass-topped wooden counters display enameled cosmetics, ribbon laces, stage masks, and tuned copper adornments, with the constant light chiming of bells sounding whenever the front beaded curtain sways.
    • Buying: Walk-in customers from the street pay the standard retail asking price of 10 silver coins, though an artisan claiming high-demand during annual dance festivals may raise the price to 11 or 12 silver. An avatar possessing recognized membership in an Entertainers’ Guild, Troupe Union, or affiliated cultural faction qualifies for a 10% discount per character tier; at Tier 1, this grants a 10% price reduction, bringing the retail cost down to 9 silver coins (or 9 silver and 2 nickels).
    • Selling: An avatar selling a clean, functional pair of silk wraps to the wardrobe proprietor negotiates within the standard merchant baseline of 10% of the item’s valuation per tier of the seller. For a Tier 1 character, the shopkeeper offers 1 silver coin (or up to 1 silver and 5 coppers if touring acts have created a regional shortage of dancer gear), transferring the payout directly into the character’s World Bank ledger while recording the avatar’s credentials in their transaction logbook.
  • Monastery Supply Stalls and Martial Arts Workshops:
    • Setting: Located on the perimeter terraces of hilltop monasteries, alongside canal-side training courtyards, or near martial academy grounds, these open-front timber booths cater to ascetics, monks, and kinetic martial artists. The shop smells of burning incense, polished bamboo, crushed camphor oil, and dry woven grass. Items on display include training weights, canvas wraps, unsharpened practice blades, and brass balance rings laid out neatly across woven reed mats.
    • Buying: The ascetic instructor or shopkeeper inspects the buyer’s balance before agreeing to sell the attuned silk bands. The baseline purchase price is 10 silver coins. Avatars holding verified credentials with a martial monastic faction or an allied acrobatic fraternity receive the Tier 1 member discount of 10%, paying 9 silver coins.
    • Selling: The workshop artisan checks the copper bells for tonal purity and examines the silk weave for frayed meridian threads. If structurally sound, the vendor purchases the wraps for 1 silver coin, crediting the funds to the avatar’s World Bank account while noting the sale in the monastery’s supply records.
  • Underground Speakeasies and Dockside Fences:
    • Setting: Hidden inside backrooms behind subterranean gambling dens, beneath canal-side taverns, or among the cramped cargo hold basements along coastal wharves, these clandestine trading spots operate far away from the eyes of municipal bailiffs and tax assessors. The clientele includes cat burglars, escapologists, and smugglers who value the wraps’ silent movement, balance enhancements, and quick defensive leaps for evading harbor guards.
    • Buying: True to black-market trade, merchants do not interface with the World Bank ledger and accept only hard, physical currency. Because the item’s nimble balance and kinetic leaps are prized by rooftop thieves and infiltration specialists, the fence charges an elevated markup, typically demanding between 12 and 15 silver coins in hand (paid as 1 gold and 2 to 5 silver coins). Guild affiliations, noble patronages, and faction discounts are not honored.
    • Selling: An avatar unloading a pair of silk wraps taken from a fallen performer or recovered during an excursion receives physical coin on the spot, with no municipal logs kept and no questions asked. The fence typically pays the standard rate of 1 silver coin in hand. If city watches have instituted tight blockades along city walls or local pickpockets urgently request footgear for roof-running, the fence will pay double the standard merchant rate, handing over 2 silver coins in physical metal.

Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Applications of the Whirling Silk Stride

  • Crowded Festival Plazas and Open-Air Bazaars:
    • Defensive Roleplay: When drunken brawlers or charging city guards disrupt a public square, the dancing avatar moves like windblown silk through the chaos. As an aggressive rioter hurls an iron candlestick or swings a heavy club, the avatar executes a pivoting whirl on the ball of their foot. The trailing silk ribbons flare outward with a flash of violet energy, brushing the incoming weapon aside while the soft chime of the copper bells steadies the panicked civilians standing nearby. Instead of retreating awkwardly into the pressing mob, the avatar glides five feet into a clean opening, completely avoiding retaliatory strikes.
    • Offensive Roleplay: To break up a street gang cornering an innocent merchant, the avatar channels their breath into a dramatic grand jeté. Vaulting directly over the heads of the surrounding spectators without brushing a single shoulder, the avatar lands dead-center among the assailants. The impact sends an expanding kinetic chime through the flagstones, throwing the street bullies off balance and opening a clear passage for the merchant to escape without the avatar needing to draw a lethal blade.
  • Slick River Docks and Moored Cargo Barges:
    • Defensive Roleplay: On damp, mossy timbers buffeted by river swells, ordinary combatants struggle to keep their footing. When a dockside brigand charges with a spear, the avatar stands firm on the slippery planks, their rhythm of the flowing stream passive stabilizing their ankles against the wet wood. As the spear lunges forward, the avatar twists their torso along the arc of the thrust; the kinetic twirl dispersion of the anklet absorbs the grazing impact along the silk, leaving the attacker overextended and staring into empty air.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Facing an opponent cornering them against a cargo hoist on a shifting deck, the avatar taps the copper bands together and leaps upward. Doubling their leaping height with breath-drawn buoyancy, the avatar springs onto the swaying crossbeam of a dock crane. From this elevated position, the avatar drops down with a sweeping crescendo step, driving their heel onto the deck timbers. The resonant sonic pulse shatters the balance of the barge crew, leaving them flat-footed and stumbling into the river water.
  • Cramped Subterranean Tunnels and Undercity Sewers:
    • Defensive Roleplay: In narrow, damp stonework where footing is compromised by slick algae and rushing drainage, the avatar utilizes the tight space to channel continuous rotational defense. When a subterranean predator lunges from a low drain pipe, the avatar spins tight against the curved sewer wall. The copper bands take the glancing scrape of stone and claw, the silk wrap dispersing the blunt force so the avatar can maintain an upright breathing posture without slipping into the foul sludge.
    • Offensive Roleplay: When a subterranean scouting party attempts to surround the avatar in a narrow intersection, the dancer executes a rhythmic series of low sweeping spins. By striking the stone pavement with measured heel drops, the avatar projects the chime of the tuned copper bells through the masonry. The high-frequency tone disorients the light-sensitive ears of subterranean vermin, causing the creatures to flinch and retreat back into the drainage conduits without drawing structural collapses in the damp tunnel.
  • Noble Ballrooms and Polished Palace Courts:
    • Defensive Roleplay: When an assassin draws a poisoned stiletto amid a high-society banquet, open martial posturing risks aristocratic panic and royal censure. The avatar seamlessly integrates self-defense into an ongoing court dance. Sweeping across the polished marble, the avatar interposes their body between the blade and the target noble. With an elegant spin, the silk ribbons snap against the assassin’s wrist, the kinetic absorption taking the sting from the blow while the soft ringing of the bells is masked by the court orchestra.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Moving through the ballroom unnoticed as a court entertainer, the avatar identifies a traitor whispering beside the throne dais. Accelerating their cadence, the avatar performs an acrobatic tumble past the royal guards, tapping their heels in an audit-like crescendo step right behind the conspirator. The localized sonic chime shocks the traitor’s posture, dropping them to their knees in a daze while the avatar finishes their pirouette with a deep bow, allowing the sovereign’s guards to secure the conspirator without a single scabbard being noisily drawn.
  • Misty Mountain Ridges and High Monastery Terraces:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Along narrow gravel ledges exposed to howling alpine gales, a single misstep means plummeting down the cliffs. When winged predators dive out of the mist, the avatar avoids their talons with disciplined somatic stepping. Relying on their breath-guided grace to ignore vertigo and panic, the avatar pivots on the edge of the abyss, the violet kinetic aura cushioning the gusts of wind and deflecting the downward rush of the flying beast’s wings.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Faced with bandits blocking a narrow rope bridge across a ravine, the avatar charges not with raw brute force, but with rhythmic momentum. Activating the grand jeté stance, the avatar takes a single bounding step from the edge of the chasm, soaring completely over the defensive barricade erected by the raiders. Landing lightly on the center of the wooden planks, the avatar strikes a grounded balance pose that anchors the swaying bridge, leaving the surprised bandits trapped between the dancer and the cliff face.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: Looking down, the avatar witnesses the spiral engravings on the copper bands fill with liquid violet light that bleeds upward through the silk ribbons. Translucent, luminescent ribbons of violet and soft gold trail after every movement of the feet, leaving fading calligraphy-like arcs in the air that illuminate the ground directly beneath each step.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers see the dancer’s ankles suddenly ignite with a soft, misty violet radiance. When the dancer moves, spins, or leaps, curling streamers of pale purple light swirl around their calves and feet like glowing silk scarves, casting a gentle warm glow across the floor and nearby spectators.
    • Positives: Provides immediate, clear visual feedback of the energy flow and lights the ground within a five-foot radius, allowing the dancer to spot rough terrain, tripwires, or obstacles in poor lighting.
    • Negatives: The bright luminescence makes hiding or stealth impossible in darkness, instantly drawing the eyes of archers, guards, or predators toward the user’s lower limbs.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: The avatar hears a high, resonant chime that sounds less like metal colliding and more like a pure crystal singing bowl. This sound immediately synchronizes with the internal beat of the heart and the rush of air in the lungs, creating a rhythmic cadence that drowns out ambient auditory clutter.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders hear a sudden, melodic ringing that cuts clean through market chatter or combat shouts. The chime has a soothing, rhythmic cadence that does not hurt the ears, sounding like distant temple chimes carried across an open lake.
    • Positives: Helps the wearer settle into a perfect breathing rhythm, filtering out chaotic battlefield noise to maintain psychological composure and focus.
    • Negatives: The distinct, chiming ring can easily be heard up to sixty feet away in quiet environments, preventing silent movement or covert repositioning.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: The avatar feels the silk bands tighten snugly around the ankles and arches of the feet with an even, supportive pressure like a custom brace. A rush of soothing, buoyant coolness spreads upward through the calves, making the legs feel weightless and completely relieving muscle ache or joint strain.
    • Observer’s Perspective: An observer touching the dancer or hit by the trailing streamers feels an unexpected cushion of cool, outward-pushing air, similar to the invisible pressure wave created by a snapped silk fan.
    • Positives: Reduces physical fatigue in the legs, absorbs the bone-jarring shock of hard landings, and stabilizes the ankles against rolls or sprains.
    • Negatives: The slight numbing coolness temporarily dampens fine tactile sensitivity in the soles of the feet, making it harder to feel microscopic floor seams, concealed pressure plates, or tiny ground contours.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: The avatar’s sinuses fill with a sharp, refreshing scent of crushed sweetgrass, mountain rain, and wild lilac blossoms that cuts through stale air on every inhalation.
    • Observer’s Perspective: People standing within five to ten feet of the dancer catch a sudden, pleasant draft of sweet floral grass and fresh ozone, as if a cool mountain breeze just rolled through the room.
    • Positives: Counters nausea, masks the foul stench of sewer gas, stagnant water, or battlefield decay, and keeps the user’s airway clear.
    • Negatives: The sweet fragrance lingers in the immediate air long after the dancer has departed, allowing scent-tracking hounds or keen beasts to follow the trail.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: The avatar experiences a sweet, cool taste resembling spring water flavored with wild mint and lotus nectar along the roof of the mouth and the back of the throat.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers in close proximity do not taste anything directly, though those struck by the kinetic wake report a fleeting, sweet coolness in the air when drawing a breath.
    • Positives: Keeps the dancer’s mouth moist and throat lubricated during rigorous physical exertion, preventing dry coughing while performing long acrobatic routines.
    • Negatives: Leaves a sweet, distinct aftertaste that can dull the palate and briefly mask the subtle bitterness of ingested poisons or tainted drink.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Kinetic Rhythm Sense:
      • User’s Perspective: The avatar’s Mind’s Eye visualizes the physical world as a lattice of flowing tempo lines. Shifting ground, moving enemies, and incoming weapon swings appear as ripples in a rhythmic sheet of water, highlighting the exact microsecond to pivot or jump.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Observers perceive the dancer as moving with supernatural foresight, ducking and gliding around strikes with uncanny, effortless timing before the attacker has even fully committed to the blow.
      • Positives: Dramatically enhances spatial awareness and reaction time, making fluid dodges and agile parries second nature.
      • Negatives: Overwhelms the mind with continuous sensory input, making it disorienting to interact with still, motionless objects or engage in abstract intellectual calculations while the item is flared.
    • Somatic Harmonic Resonator:
      • User’s Perspective: The avatar perceives a warm, pulsing tether extending from their lower abdomen down into the bedrock of Saṃsāra, sensing the solid balance of the earth as an anchor that feeds energy directly into the core.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Observers feel a sudden, steadying gravitational pulse in their chests whenever the dancer’s heel strikes the stone, momentarily calming panic or easing dizziness.
      • Positives: Anchors the user’s soul-avatar connection, bolstering fortitude against disorientation, forced knockdowns, or magical dazes.
      • Negatives: Creates a sharp spiritual jolt if the user is suddenly lifted completely off the ground or tossed into mid-air unexpectedly, causing a momentary lapse in concentration.

Recipe: Whirling Silk Ankle Wraps

  • Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested to serve as the core harmonic catalyst).
    • Four yards of unbleached pale lilac raw silk ribbon (tightly spun from high-canopy river silkworms).
    • Two yards of ivory raw silk ribbon (matching width and weight).
    • Two yards of braided silver-spun linen thread.
    • Two annealed copper bands (approximately one inch in width, shaped to encircle the lower ankle above the malleolus).
    • Six miniature spherical copper bells with internal loose bronze beads (three for each foot).
    • Two ounces of distilled camphor resin (harvested via fluid collector from mature camphor laurel).
    • One dram of dried crushed sweetgrass and dried lilac petals (ground together into fine ritual dust).
    • One sacrificial pair of worn dancer’s ribbon sandals or acrobatic cloth wraps (consumed entirely during the process to transfer somatic muscle-memory patterns).
  • Tools Required:
    • One fine bone needle or silver weaving shuttle.
    • One hand-held fluid collector with an ultra-fine dispensing tip.
    • One stone mortar and pestle.
    • One miniature chasing hammer and curved engraving chisel.
    • One bench crucible with a low-heat spirit lamp.
    • One pitch bowl or wooden forming mandrel (shaped to match the ankle joint).
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Textile Weaving / Tailoring: Skill Level 2 (for multi-ribbon braided inlay and tension-stitched borders).
    • Jewelry Crafting / Metalsmithing: Skill Level 1 (for band chasing, sound-hole filing, and bell tuning).
    • Somatic Breathwork / Qi Cultivation: Basic familiarity with directing personal breath and kinetic flow into raw crafting media.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Prepare the Aromatic Binding Resin: Place the dried sweetgrass and lilac petals into the stone mortar and grind them until reduced to a fragrant, pale powder. Using the fluid collector, measure two ounces of distilled camphor resin into the stone mortar and fold in the powder. Warm the vessel over the spirit lamp until the mixture becomes a semi-translucent, pale-violet aromatic resin.
    • Sacrificial Transference: Lay the sacrificial worn dancer’s wraps flat across the stone workstation. Smear a thin layer of the warm aromatic resin along the length of the old cloth. Place the Tier 1 magic crystal at the center of the wraps. Focus your rhythmic breathing into the stones: as ambient heat from the spirit lamp chars and dissolves the sacrificial fabric, channel its accumulated somatic patterns into the crystal matrix. The old cloth dissolves into dry ash, leaving the crystal glowing with a soft, pulsing violet resonance.
    • Chasing and Tuning the Copper Bands: Mount the annealed copper bands onto the pitch bowl. Using the curved engraving chisel and chasing hammer, cut spiraling channel grooves along the outer face of each band, tracing the traditional pathway of the lower meridian lines. File the aperture slits of the six copper bells until each bell rings at the same clear, high-frequency pitch when struck. Suspend three bells from the lower rim of each copper band using small silver jump rings.
    • Ribbon Weaving and Edge Reinforcement: Take the lilac and ivory raw silk ribbons and align them into dual-layered bands. Using the bone needle, execute a herringbone stitch along the margins using the braided silver-spun linen thread. Dip the needle into the prepared violet resin during stitching to seal the edges, locking the energetic thread directly into the silk grain.
    • Setting the Catalyst and Sealing the Circuit: Cleave the attuned Tier 1 magic crystal evenly into two matched cabochons using the chisel. Set one cabochon into a central bezel mount soldered to each copper band. Using the fluid collector, inject the remaining violet resin along the chased spiral grooves of the copper, extending the lines until they make physical contact with the silk ribbons.
    • Somatic Attunement Cycle: Wrap the completed assemblies around the wooden ankle mandrel. Hold both hands over the bells and breathe in the four-count cadence of the river dance for three continuous minutes. Channel the breath into the bells until they ring in harmony with your exhalations and the violet resin in the chased grooves sets into a hard, glass-smooth inlay, completing the construction.

River Acrobat Who Bound Wind Beneath Her Heels

In that period of the world when the great wheel had turned only four hundred times and the sky-beast of the higher firmament VaporSphere did shine with blue vapor through the night hours, there was a province of the river-lands in the territory of Banpo where the water was never quiet. The river did rise up and fall down according to the belly of the earth, and the people of that place did not walk upon the ground because the mud was as deep as an ox’s brisket. They drove tall posts of cedar into the river bottom and made roads of narrow ropes and thin planks so that a traveler walked always above the water like a water-skating spider.

Among the people of the posts was a female avatar named Mei, whose flesh had been quickened by the breath of her mother only nineteen winters prior. Mei possessed no iron armor, nor did she hold any writ of high noble blood from the Great King, having only one soul inside her chest and standing at Tier One, which is the baseline measure of those who have not yet slain the great lizards of the marsh. Mei did not plant the swamp rice, nor did she hold the net for the silver fish. Her trade was to dance upon the highest poles at the middle of the river when the great cargo boats floated down from the mountain mines, so that the rowers would look upon her limbs and forget their sweat, throwing coppers onto the wooden platform beneath her feet.

Now in those ancient days the wind upon the river was not gentle, for the breath of the moon did clash with the hot wind of the sulfur vents. When Mei spun upon the tips of the poles, her bare soles were bruised against the rough bark, and the wet moss of the water-timbers caused her toes to slip. Many acrobats who had danced upon those poles before her had fallen into the gray foam, where the great river-leaches and the sharp pikes of the sunken weir did swallow their avatars until their souls went wandering back to the dark seat of Gaialilith.

There dwelt upon a raft of hollow reeds an old woman whose name the translator of the fifth dynasty has written as Sula, though in the speech of the marsh it was only a clicking of the palate. Sula was an ancient person whose lungs were cracked from the marsh-rot, but she was wise in the movement of the breath which the old teachers call the river of the throat. Sula observed Mei as the maiden stood upon a single stake of timber, crying because her heels were split with bleeding fissures and her knees shook whenever the eastern gale blew the river into white caps.

Sula spoke words which the middle-scribe did poorly carve upon the stone: “The crane does not fall from the reed because the crane does not fight the river. The crane takes the wind into her feathers and makes the air into a stone. You dance like a dead log that has been pushed into the eddy; your breath remains in your chin, and your marrow is as dry as a baked brick.”

Mei bowed her forehead upon the wet raft and answered: “Mother of the reeds, the rowers give no nickel coins to a maiden who sits upon her heels. If I do not dance upon the poles tomorrow, the overseer of the wharf will cast my sleeping mat into the swamp, and I will have no meal of dried shrimp.”

Then Sula went into the hollow hold of her reed boat and brought forth two bands of raw silk which had been spun by the pale caterpillars that eat the water-lilies. The silk was the color of the evening sky when the sun Helios has dipped under the wave, being pale purple like an onion skin. She also brought forth two hoops of soft red copper which had been salvaged from the fire-tubes of a drowned steam engine of the very first kingdom. From the edge of each hoop hung three tiny round fruits of hollow bronze, inside of which rolled pebbles of black glass taken from the river bed.

The ancient translation states that Sula took a measure of gum from the camphor laurel and ground it with sweetgrass that had grown upon the dry mounds where the dead kings lie. She heated the gum in a broken crock over a peat flame until the smell was like the garden of the morning. Then Sula took from her breast a tiny stone of magic power, no larger than the claw of a mouse, which had been found inside the stomach of a golden carp. She cast the tiny stone into the warm gum, and she breathed into the pot five times, inhaling through her nostrils until her ribs showed like the wicker of a basket, and blowing forth the hot air of her belly until the resin turned as purple as a bruise.

Sula smeared the hot purple gum upon the silk ribbons and bound them around the ankles of Mei. Over the silk she fastened the copper bands, setting the six tiny bells to dangle over the outer joints of her feet. As she drew the silver strings tight, Sula struck Mei upon the middle of the back with the flat of her hand and shouted: “Draw the wind down past the heart! Let the wind sleep beneath the navel! When your heel touches the wood, do not strike the timber as an axe strikes; kiss the pole as the skimming swallow touches the pool!”

Mei drew the air into her belly as the old crone commanded. The tablet records that as the breath hit the bottom of her belly, the copper bells upon her feet did not make a harsh clatter like iron nails in an urn, but gave forth a small, sharp chime like the bell of an altar when the oil is poured. The purple silk shrank until it held her ankles like the hand of a strong sister, and a coldness like mountain snow ran up the sinews of her calves. The pain of her bleeding fissures ceased, and the skin of her soles became as tough as boiled leather, yet as soft as a glove.

The next morning was the great gathering of the barges, when seventy boats of timber and coal came through the narrow sluice of Banpo. The river was very angry, boiling with yellow mud, and the wind blew so fierce that the banners upon the customs house were torn to strips. The overseer of the wharves called out that no girl could stand upon the poles, for even the gulls were blown backwards into the reeds.

Mei climbed the ladder of ropes to the top of the middle stake, which stood thirty cubits above the boiling water. The stake was wet with spray and as narrow as the palm of a soldier’s hand. When she reached the summit, she did not look down into the foam where the water-spikes waited to pierce her avatar. She closed her lips and pulled the stormy wind through her nose down into her lower furnace.

She tapped her left heel against the copper of her right band. The six bells chimed together in a chord that was neither loud nor soft, but pierced through the roar of the waterfall. The writing says that ribbons of violet smoke leaped from the silk bands and coiled around her limbs like living eels. Mei leaped from the first stake toward the second, which was five paces distant through the air.

The watchers upon the shore screamed with one throat, believing the maiden was cast away by the gale. But the ancient script notes: “The wind did not push her down; the wind became as a stair of timber beneath her sandals.” Mei hovered in the breath of the storm, her arms outstretched like the linen sails of an aerial skiff, and when her foot came down upon the second stake, the copper bells chimed once more, and the violet light spread across the wet wood, drying the green moss instantly until it was like rough sandpaper.

For three turns of the hourglass, while the boats passed beneath the bridge of ropes, Mei danced upon the narrow heads of the stakes. She spun so swiftly that the observers saw only a column of pale lilac smoke capped by her dark hair. When the storm-wind hurled a heavy pine branch from the riverbank directly toward her chest, she did not raise her hands to ward it off; she pivoted upon the ball of her right foot, her silk ribbons snapping outward against the flying log. The heavy wood struck the trailing ribbon with a loud crash, but the purple energy swallowed the blow, deflecting the log sideways into the water while Mei continued her turn without breaking the cadence of her breath.

When she finished her dance, she leaped from the highest stake down to the wooden dock, a distance of twenty paces. The men upon the pier turned their faces aside, expecting to hear the snapping of her leg-bones upon the oak boards. But she landed as softly as a goose feather, her knees bending in the five measures of the river-qigong, and the bells struck a single golden note that made every man’s heart stand still with wonder. The kinetic shock did not crush her bones, for it passed through the copper bands into the timbers of the dock, causing the entire wharf to groan like a sleeping whale while Mei stood upright, smiling, with no speck of sweat upon her lip.

The master of the trade house was so astonished in his mind that he filled both of her wooden shoes with pieces of pure silver, and the captain of the lead barge threw down his own brass ring to honor her stride. For sixty seasons Mei danced upon the river of Banpo, and in all those years she never fell into the yellow mud, nor did the marsh-rot ever enter the joints of her knees. When she grew old and her hair was white like river-foam, she took the silk wraps from her ankles and tied them to the timber post at the water gate, where they stayed through four kings’ reigns, ringing with the wind whenever the river rose to warn the fishermen of the deep.

Moral of the story: The fool hardens his limbs like dry timber and is broken when the storm-wind blows, but the dancer breathes the wind into her belly and walks upon the teeth of the mountain as if they were flowers.

    • Somatic Respiration: Once per encounter, when the investigator succeeds on a Dodge roll against an incoming melee attack, they may spend 2 Magic Points to immediately take a regulated breath. Doing so restores 1 lost Magic Point or negates temporary disorientation, granting a bonus die to their next action.
    • Auditory Penalty: The chime of the tuned copper bells imposes a penalty die on all Stealth rolls while walking, running, or climbing.

Blades in the Dark

Silk Stride Anklets

  • Description & Lore: Fine Iruvian dancer’s silks woven with braided metallic strands and tuned copper bells. Engineered to manipulate internal rhythm, they allow rooftop runners and acrobats to disperse falling momentum, vault dangerous gaps, and dance clear of street blades.
  • Item Category & Load: Specialized Mobility Gear (1 Load)
  • Game Mechanics:

    • Crescendo Step (Special Armor): Spend 1 Stress to strike your heels together during an engagement. The resulting resonant kinetic wave steadies adjacent crew members, allowing one nearby ally to immediately clear a temporary physical penalty or disoriented state.
    • Auditory Consequence: While active, the jingling bells increase the likelihood of introducing “Noise / Alerted Guards” as a complication on stealth actions.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition / 2024 Revision)

Anklets of the Whirling Silk Stride

  • Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)
  • Description & Lore: Bands of lilac silk bordered with silver-spun thread and engraved copper rings bearing small, clear-toned bells. Developed by river acrobats, they channel vital breath into kinetic grace, turning defensive footwork into a continuous performance.
  • Item Properties:
    • Acrobatic Footing: While wearing these anklets, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class against the first melee attack that targets you in any combat round, and you ignore nonmagical difficult terrain caused by slick, wet, or uneven surfaces (such as wet wood, mud, or loose gravel).
    • Buoyant Leap: When you make a long jump or high jump, your jump distance increases by 10 feet, and any falling damage you take is reduced by an amount equal to five times your proficiency bonus.
    • Pivoting Whirl: When a creature within 5 feet of you misses you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to immediately move up to 5 feet to an unoccupied space without provoking opportunity attacks.

One willing creature of your choice within 10 feet of you that is currently prone, dazed, or off-balance can immediately stand up or end the effect without expending movement.
