Qigong 478 of the Harmonized Meridian Wrap

  • Lore: Originating among traveling ascetics who navigated the turbulent coastal regions of Tasian, this woven band was devised to harmonize the erratic currents of bodily mana. In the chaotic environments of Saṃsāra, minor physical trauma often disrupts the flow of magical crystalline cells within an avatar. Early practitioners observed that deliberate breathing and internal flow regulation could steady the body when violence breaks out. Woven with thin mineral fibers harvested from dormant earth vents, the wrap acts as an external meridian pathway. It was consecrated by temple healers who believed that surviving an encounter relies less on striking the hardest blow and more on maintaining structural composure when defenses begin to fail.
  • Description: A tight, triple-ply band crafted from slate-gray raw cotton interwoven with faintly shimmering silver-tinted linen threads. Along the inner face of the band, dozens of miniature copper discs the size of shirt buttons are stitched to align directly against major arterial and energetic pressure points. When bound around the wrist or lower arm, the wrap feels pleasantly cool against the skin. During moments of physical exertion or injury, the fabric tightens slightly, pulsing with a muted azure glow as it guides the avatar’s circulation into a steady, measured rhythm.

    • Item Level: 1
    • Armor Check (AC): +1 (Armor Check)
    • Durability / Hit Points: 10 plus wearer maximum health points
    • Resilience: 10
    • Weight: 1 pound
    • Market Valuation: 12 silver (suggested value; subject to local merchant availability and market conditions)
    • Attunement: Requires simple attunement (one full minute of uninterrupted focus while bound to the forearm)
  • Designated Slot:
    • Arm Slot (Left or Right)
  • Passive Magic:
    • Cadence of the Five Breaths: While this item is attuned and openly worn, the avatar’s internal energy circulation suppresses erratic blood loss. Whenever the avatar is afflicted with the Bleeding condition, the damage taken from that condition at the start of each turn is reduced by 1 point (to a minimum of 0). Additionally, the wearer gains a +1 bonus on saving throws against environmental hazards that impose the Fatigued or Hindered conditions.
    • Meridian Shock Absorption: When the avatar takes physical damage from an incoming attack, the woven threads absorb and disperse the impact throughout the limb rather than allowing it to fracture bone or tear muscle. The first source of physical bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage suffered during any combat round is reduced by 1 point.
    • Steady Vessel: If the avatar’s current health points drop to or below 5 HP, the wrap cinches tight, stabilizing the flow of life force. The avatar gains immunity to the Shaken condition so long as their health remains within this critical threshold, preventing panic from clouding their tactical decisions.
  • Activable Magic:
    • Exhale of Redirection:
      • Action Cost: 1 Reaction
      • Trigger: An ally within 10 feet of the avatar is struck by an attack from a visible foe.
      • Effect: The wearer forcefully exhales a measured breath, channeling a wave of ambient pressure through the wrap to slightly deflect the path of the blow. The ally gains a temporary +1 bonus to their Armor Check against that specific triggering attack. If the attack still lands, the total damage dealt to the ally is reduced by an amount equal to the roll of the wearer’s tier die (1d4). This ability can be used twice per day, resetting after a long rest.
    • Qi Gathering Stance:
      • Action Cost: 1 Action
      • Effect: The avatar assumes a grounded, low stance and places a hand firmly against the copper nodes of the wrap, regulating their respiratory cycle for six seconds. The avatar immediately recovers 2 health points. Furthermore, the next saving throw the avatar makes before the start of their next turn receives an advantage roll (roll 2d20 and take the higher result). This action can be performed once per combat encounter.
    • Dispersal of Inward Trauma:
      • Action Cost: 1 Action
      • Effect: The avatar strikes the center node of the wrap while focusing their Mind’s Eye on their internal conduits. Any active non-permanent condition currently hindering the avatar from the following list—Bleeding, Dazed, or Shaken—is immediately cleansed and removed. Using this ability generates a brief hum that can be heard up to 20 feet away. Usable once per day.

Commerce and Acquisition of Meridian Wraps

  • Family Apothecaries and Herbalist Nooks:
    • Setting: These small, independent mom-and-pop shops are typically tucked along the stone side-alleys of walled port cities or provincial towns, marked by bunches of drying reed-stalks, jars of fermented sap, and bundles of coarse linen hung from low wooden rafters. Operated by multi-generational families who stitch bandages alongside brewing basic curative salves, these shops stock the item as preventative medical wear for dock laborers, couriers, and newly awakened avatars heading into the wild brush. The atmosphere smells heavily of vinegar, crushed camphor, and dry earth.
    • Buying: An unaffiliated traveler walking in from the street is charged the standard retail rate of 12 silver coins, though an artisan who claims scarcity of silver-threaded linen in an isolated town may demand up to 14 silver. An avatar holding verified membership in the local Herbalists’ Guild or an allied civilian trades faction receives a 10% reduction per character tier level; for a Tier 1 character, this yields a 10% discount, bringing the purchase price to 10 silver and 8 copper coins.
    • Selling: When an avatar sells a pristine or repaired wrap across the wooden counter, the shopkeeper haggles within the standard baseline of 10% of the item’s valuation per tier of the seller. For a Tier 1 character, the shopkeeper negotiates to purchase the wrap for approximately 10% of its base value, offering 1 silver and 2 copper coins (or up to 2 silver if local supplies are exhausted), remitting the funds directly into the avatar’s verified World Bank ledger while recording the transaction in their hand-bound parchment ledger.
  • Martial Clothiers and Guildhall Outfitter Stalls:
    • Setting: Located in open-air concourses immediately outside municipal guildhalls or within bustling military bazaar districts, these narrow vendor booths are operated by specialized weavers, armorsmith apprentices, and retired skirmishers. Stalls are framed with seasoned timber poles displaying rows of padded gambesons, leather vambraces, and reinforced arm wraps pinned to hanging felt boards. These proprietors cater specifically to registered mercenaries, caravan guards, and expedition parties preparing to clear roadways between settlements.
    • Buying: Outfitted for expeditionary durability, wraps sold here are often pre-fitted and inspected for immediate attunement. Non-members pay the full market price of 12 silver coins. Characters possessing active membership credentials with the local Adventurers’ Guild or an officially recognized martial faction secure a 10% discount at Tier 1, paying 10 silver and 8 copper coins.
    • Selling: Guild outfitter merchants inspect the weave for broken fibers or warped copper nodes. If approved, the outfitter purchases the wrap for 1 silver and 2 copper coins, automatically crediting the seller’s World Bank balance while noting the avatar’s registered credentials in the guild’s requisition log for future civic audit.
  • Unregulated Black Market Dens:
    • Setting: Operating out of clandestine back rooms behind water-pipe cellars, secluded cavern passages beneath coastal wharves, or shaded corners of abandoned warehouses after dockside patrols conclude, these illicit trading spots avoid municipal oversight. Goods are laid out across upturned cargo crates or grease-stained blankets, free from the scrutiny of tax collectors, city bailiffs, and crown inspectors. The clientele consists of outlaws, scavengers who peel gear from fallen avatars before authorities arrive, and travelers seeking untracked equipment.
    • Buying: In keeping with black-market convention, merchants refuse to interface with the World Bank system and conduct all transactions strictly in physical precious metal coinage. The wraps are sold at a premium due to their immediate utility and untraceable nature, typically priced between 15 silver and 18 silver coins (paid as 1 gold and 5 to 8 silver in physical coin). No guild discounts or faction concessions are recognized under any circumstances.
    • Selling: Scavengers and wandering sellswords unloading gear here are paid directly in hard coin with no questions asked and no transaction records logged. If the black-market fence is overstocked, they will pay only the standard merchant rate of 1 silver and 2 copper coins in hand. However, if city gates have recently tightened entry inspections or local conflicts have depleted regional medical supplies, a fence seeking fast inventory will pay double the standard merchant purchase rate, handing over 2 silver and 4 copper coins in physical metal.

Tactical Roleplay and Applications Across Environments

  • Subterranean Cave Systems and Deep Mines:
    • Defensive Roleplay: In the cramped, echoing tunnels beneath island mountain roots, falling scree and ambush strikes from burrowing horrors pose an immediate threat of blunt trauma and concussive shock. An avatar under assault from an unexpected rockfall or chitinous clubbing raises the wrapped forearm, locking the elbow into the stone wall while exhaling deeply through clenched teeth. The copper nodes against the wrist flare with a faint azure resonance, deadening the crushing force of the impact so the limb remains unbroken. When trapped in stale shafts thick with damp mineral grit, the wearer sits back-to-back with comrades, using the steady cadence of their regulated breathing to ignore the tremors of the earth, actively preventing panic or disorientation from setting in during prolonged darkness.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In close-quarters tunnel fighting where long weapon arcs are impossible, the avatar presses the initiative by transforming physical composure into leverage. Using an action to establish a grounded stance, the avatar presses the central node to purge lingering daze effects caused by sonic shrieks or concussive cave-ins. With breathing perfectly synchronized, the avatar steps inside the guard of an aggressive subterranean beast, absorbing the glancing scrape of a subterranean claw against the forearm before driving a short thrusting dagger or pickaxe straight forward, capitalizing on the creature’s overextended weight without losing footing on the slick shale.
  • High-Altitude Cloud Cities and Airborne Platforms:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Aboard floating platforms suspended beneath massive levitation bowls or navigating the drafty rope bridges of Copter City, sudden squalls and altitude shifts threaten balance and cause severe disorientation. When an ally walking an exterior catwalk is clipped by the swinging boom of a cargo zeppelin or the wing of an aggressive cliff-nesting drake, the avatar immediately executes an operational reaction. Dropping low against the deck timbers, the avatar projects a sharp, focused respiratory burst outward; the ambient pressure displaces the force of the collision just enough to keep the companion from being hurled over the edge into the three-thousand-foot drop below.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Combat atop open skies requires deliberate forward momentum against ferocious crosswinds. When boarding hostile skiffs or repelling sky-borne raiders, the avatar triggers their internal focus to steady their heartbeat, ignoring the vertigo of looking down toward the distant ocean. The avatar uses the wrap’s shock-dispersing threads to parry the downward sweep of boarding axes, taking the brunt of the kinetic momentum across the arm while maintaining absolute stability on the narrow planks. With the initial blow deflected, the avatar uses the remaining momentum to execute an immediate counter-drive, forcing the ungrounded adversary toward the unguarded railing.
  • Dense Coastal Jungles and Mangrove Bogs:
    • Defensive Roleplay: In the humid wilderness where venomous predators, thorny undergrowth, and aggressive feral flora inflict persistent bleeding wounds, the wrap serves as a frontline preservation tool. When an avatar’s flesh is lacerated by jagged brambles or barbed serpent teeth, the avatar immediately taps into the woven meridian channels. The fabric tightens instinctively against the forearm, compressing the arterial flow just enough to seal the weeping edges of the wound and dull the throbbing pain. Even while wading through waist-deep mire under constant risk of infection and blood loss, the avatar’s steady circulation filters the systemic shock, allowing the party to maintain an orderly retreat through the swamp.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Operating in thick brush where movement is severely impeded, the avatar uses the wrap to endure retaliatory attacks while hunting evasive swamp beasts. As a camouflage predator lunges from the murky waterline, the avatar deliberately feeds the braced forearm into the creature’s snapping jaws. The reinforced linen and energy nodes neutralize the primary tearing force of the bite, anchoring the predator firmly in place. While the beast struggles against the stabilized limb, the avatar draws a clean breath, calls upon the focused energy within the wrap to steady their weapon hand, and drives an off-hand blade or spear directly into the creature’s exposed flank before it can slip back beneath the surface.
  • Urban Alleyways and Central City Thoroughfares:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Navigating crowded marketplace avenues and narrow residential corridors between towering tenements brings frequent encounters with street cutpurses, hired thugs, and rival faction enforcers. When an ambush erupts and an ally is struck by a concealed sap or a thrown lead cosh, the avatar activates their reaction to disperse the kinetic shockwave, keeping their ally on their feet and conscious. In situations where an enforcer attempts to intimidate the party by applying physical force, the avatar stands stone-still; as the assailant’s blunt strike connects with the forearm, the wrap quietly disperses the impact into the ground with a muffled click of its copper discs, demonstrating utter physical unflappability without drawing a weapon.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In paved city quarters where drawn weapons immediately attract city guards and royal patrols, the wrap allows for effective non-lethal subdual. The avatar initiates an engagement by channeling controlled breathing into an advancing stride, ignoring the minor bruising of incoming cudgel strikes. Closing the gap, the avatar delivers precise open-palm strikes and forearm checks against the joint structures and pressure centers of the opponents. By absorbing the force of the brawl through the attuned weave, the avatar systematically exhausts the attackers’ stamina, driving them against the cobblestone walls and disarming them before municipal authorities can intervene.
  • Open Sea Decks and Coral Atolls:
    • Defensive Roleplay: On the pitching deck of a trade caravel or across the sharp ridges of exposed offshore reefs, footing is precarious and sea monsters strike with blinding speed. When a crushing tentacle or sweeping tail threatens to smash an allied sailor across the rigging, the avatar anchors their feet against the wet timber and releases a resonant breath, projecting the wrap’s warding kinetic buffer across the spray to diminish the impact’s lethality. Furthermore, as saltwater enters fresh cuts, the avatar touches the center copper node to clear the dazing sting of the brine, ensuring their Mind’s Eye remains sharp to track shifting ocean currents and submerged hazards.
    • Offensive Roleplay: While boarding stranded wrecks or battling amphibious raiders scrambling over the gunwales, the avatar leverages the wrap’s physical resilience to control the line of engagement. As a raider lunges with a barbed boarding pike, the avatar steps into the path of the weapon, deflecting the shaft across the reinforced band while taking minimal trauma. Utilizing the recoil of the parry, the avatar maintains balance on the rolling deck, using the grounded posture granted by their disciplined focus to drive their own weapon into the gap created by the raider’s failed momentum, casting the assailant backward into the turbulent surf.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: The world appears momentarily sharper along high-contrast edges as the avatar focuses their respiration, with an azure luminosity crawling through the weave of the forearm wrap and tracing the contours of the wearer’s radial artery in pale blue light.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders observe the muted slate fabric suddenly pulse with a cold, glowing luminescence, while each stitched copper disc reflects tiny, rhythmic flashes of blue light that beat like an exposed heart along the forearm.
    • Positives: Illuminates immediate footholds in dim spaces and visibly reassures allies that the avatar’s defensive guard is fully anchored.
    • Negatives: The bright azure light immediately compromises visual camouflage in shadowed corridors, signaling the avatar’s readiness and precise position to lurking foes.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: The roaring chaos of battle recedes into a low, muffled drone, replaced by the steady, resonant drumming of their own regulated pulse and a deep, rushing air sound similar to wind whistling through a narrow flue.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Those within twenty feet hear a metallic, tuning-fork vibration radiating from the vibrating copper discs, underscored by the avatar’s sharp, deliberate exhale cutting through the ambient room noise.
    • Positives: Dampens the disorienting acoustic shock of explosions or shrieking monsters, allowing the avatar to track tactical movement without auditory panic.
    • Negatives: The sharp metallic hum betrays the wearer’s proximity to guards or subterranean predators sensitive to sound through stone or enclosed spaces.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: The linen constricts firmly around the wrist, applying steady, supportive pressure across the tendon lines that feels like an ice-cold soak transitioning instantly into a comforting, radiating warmth.
    • Observer’s Perspective: An observer placing a hand on the avatar feels rigid muscle tension lock into the arm, accompanied by a subtle, repelling kinetic vibration vibrating across the surface of the linen.
    • Positives: Provides immediate joint stabilization and deadens the sharp ache of bleeding gashes or blunt bone bruises.
    • Negatives: Produces a lingering, needle-like tingling in the fingertips and temporary numbness along the wrist that makes delicate lockpicking or intricate handling awkward immediately following activation.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: The avatar breathes in an intense, sharp odor of ionized air and scorched wool, overlaying the stale sweat of their skin with a smell like a lightning strike across wet sand.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Nearby entities detect a distinct metallic tang reminiscent of polished brass and ozone blowing outward on the avatar’s exhale.
    • Positives: The sharp, clean bite of ionized air cuts through foul swamp vapors, rotting cave odors, and noxious gas, helping the avatar stay alert.
    • Negatives: Scent-tracking beasts can instantly differentiate this unnatural electrical-metallic odor from normal humanoid perspiration across significant downwind distances.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: A sudden, crisp flavor of cold copper and salted water washes over the back of the tongue and inner cheeks, as though holding a clean metal coin in the mouth while inhaling sea spray.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Unperceived directly by observers, though they may notice the avatar swallowing hard or working their jaw to clear excessive salivation caused by the sudden galvanic surge.
    • Positives: Suppresses the sickening flavor of bile or blood entering the mouth from internal blunt trauma, keeping the avatar focused on combat actions.
    • Negatives: Induces an unyielding dry sensation in the throat once the initial saliva clears, creating a demanding urge for water once the encounter concludes.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mind’s Eye Synchronization: The avatar’s Mind’s Eye flickers with a real-time overlay showing their own physical integrity as a solidifying blue lattice; structural weak points in the avatar’s form mend and glow amber, while external kinetic trajectories from approaching enemy weapons briefly highlight with predictive trace lines.
    • Observer Mind’s Eye Shift: An observing creature or ally utilizing their own Mind’s Eye to appraise the wearer witnesses the avatar’s basic durability reading stabilize, with temporary resistance modifiers and Armor Check calculations flashing brightly over the avatar’s arm profile.
    • Spatial Pressure Resonance: The avatar experiences a gut-level awareness of nearby air displacement within ten feet, instinctively feeling the atmospheric compression of an incoming club, bolt, or thrown stone a split second before physical contact occurs.
    • Meridian Feedback: A mental tether connects the wrap to the avatar’s central consciousness, projecting a sense of balanced gravitational weight that firmly plants their spiritual presence against the terrain, rendering mental dislodgment difficult.
    • Positives: Grants intuitive awareness of blind-side flankers and immediate clarity regarding current physical limits, ensuring no tactical overextension occurs.
    • Negatives: Floods the mind with high-density kinetic and biological data that can induce a dull, throbbing pressure behind the eyes if activated multiple times in rapid succession.

Recipe: Woven Meridian Shock-Wrap

  • Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (size and weight of a standard coin, used as the primary arcane catalyst to bind the kinetic lattice).
    • Three yards of triple-ply slate-gray raw cotton cord.
    • One yard of silver-spun linen thread (drawn from high-altitude flax).
    • Twelve small punched copper discs (each approximately the diameter of a shirt button, thoroughly cleansed of oxidation).
    • Two ounces of distilled tree sap (harvested via fluid collector from mature ironwood or camphor trees).
    • One dram of dried crushed mineral earth harvested from dormant volcanic vents.
    • One sacrificial common linen bandage or nonmagical wrist wrap (consumed entirely during the process to transfer foundational weaving structure).
  • Tools Required:
    • One bone needle or fine copper weaving awl.
    • One hand-held fluid collector (used to draw, measure, and deposit binding saps without contamination).
    • One stone mortar and pestle (for reducing mineral earth to fine powder).
    • One jeweler’s punch or miniature ball-peen hammer (for setting and piercing copper nodes).
    • One steady heat source (small spirit lamp or portable hearth, used to set the sap-resin mixture).
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Tailoring / Weaving: Skill Level 2 (or equivalent textile assembly proficiency).
    • Alchemical Crafting: Skill Level 1 (required for stabilizing reactive saps and mineral reagents).
    • Basic Arcane Conduit Manipulation: Familiarity with guiding mana into raw materials through manual contact.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Prepare the Base Reagent: Using the mortar and pestle, grind the volcanic mineral earth into a uniform dust. Measure two ounces of distilled tree sap into an open earthenware bowl using the fluid collector, then gradually fold in the powdered earth. Heat the mixture over the low spirit flame for three minutes while stirring counter-clockwise until it thickens into a tacky, dark azure resin.
    • Thread Imbument and Sacrifice: Lay the sacrificial linen bandage flat across the workspace. Pour the heated sap-resin mixture along its length, allowing the material to fully absorb the binding agent. Position the Tier 1 magic crystal at the center of the soaked cloth. Focus intent through your hands to begin the transference: as the sacrificial fabric chars and dissolves under the exothermic reaction, channel the released latent magic into the spool of silver-spun linen thread resting adjacent to the vessel. The original cloth is consumed, leaving the thread humming with faint kinetic resonance.
    • Structural Looming: Anchor the three yards of slate-gray raw cotton cord to an awl pinned to the workbench. Using the bone needle, execute a tight, three-ply herringbone weave. Intertwine the newly imbued silver-linen thread into the lower layer of the weave at three-quarter-inch intervals, creating alternating dual-strata conduits that mimic physical meridian pathways.
    • Piercing and Alignment of Nodes: Using the jeweler’s punch, pierce two micro-apertures through the face of each copper disc. Arrange the twelve discs along the inner face of the woven band in a straight, linear sequence corresponding to the radial and ulnar pulse lines. Stitch each disc securely to the inner cotton layer using double-looped silver thread, ensuring the metal surfaces sit flush against where the wearer’s skin will rest.
    • Crystallized Catalyst Sealing: Take the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal—now partially softened by the earlier transference step—and press it firmly against the interior reverse side of the central copper disc. Using the tip of the awl, draw four fine linear score marks across the crystal’s surface toward the four cardinal edges of the wrap. As the crystal cools and hardens back into its solid state, it fuses directly with the silver stitching, completing the closed energy circuit and yielding the finished harmonized wrap.

Who Bound Shaking Wrist of Mason

In that day which was early when the sun Helios was very hot or perhaps cold because the sky was turned, there lived in the dust of the old settlement of Tasian a man named Khensu who made rocks square for the high walls. Now Khensu was not a fighter of wild monsters nor did he have many souls inside his belly, but was merely of Tier One, having only the breath of his mother and two hands that held the chisel. Every day when the bell gave six rings in the morning, Khensu struck the grey basalt with his iron hammer. But the earth below the ground of Saṃsāra was not sleeping, for the fire veins under the stone were swollen with anger, making the ground shake like a dog coming out of a pond.

One day, while Khensu struck a large stone to make it fit into the temple gate where the priests bowed, the earth belched a great crack. The stone of many hundred pounds tipped sideways from the scaffolding and fell toward his small apprentice whose name is lost in the damp rot of the papyrus. Khensu, possessing no grand spells nor any wand of lightning, thrust his naked arm beneath the falling boulder to arrest its plunge. His bones did not break utterly, but the meat of his wrist was twisted like wet grass, and the red life water leaped out from the skin in great spurts. The veins inside him were torn, and when the veins of a living man are torn, the magic crystalline cells that sleep in the marrow begin to curdle and turn to salt.

There sat in the shadow of the stone pile an old recorder of tallies whose tongue was not the tongue of Tasian, an ancient man named Bako who had walked out of the southern reeds before the grand kings were crowned. Bako looked upon Khensu who lay upon the gravel weeping because his hand would no longer close to hold bread. The blood ran into the ants, and the workers shouted that Khensu must be laid in the ditch because an avatar with a severed breath line soon becomes cold meat and turns to purple dust or lies in blood.

Bako said to the overseer words that were crookedly written by the scribe of the third dynasty: “Why do you cast away the pot before the clay is baked hard? The man is leaking his spirit because the wind in his chest has no ditch to run in.”

Then Bako took from his sack a strip of common linen that had been torn from the shroud of a dead sheep-watcher, and three yards of coarse thread spun from grey weed. He also had twelve small discs of red copper which had been beaten flat by children playing by the furnace. Bako did not speak a prayer to the high lords of the sky, because the gods do not care to look at a mason bleeding on a rock pile. Instead, Bako sat upon his heels and breathed in a manner that made his ribs whistle like an empty water skin. He blew his breath upon the copper discs until they were hot with the grease of his lungs.

The translator of the middle kingdom writes here that Bako took an extract of sticky gum from the weeping root of a camphor bush and smeared it upon the linen, and he took a tiny stone of magic that was no larger than a bean from his pocket. This stone he crushed between two river stones until it was like grey meal. He sprinkled the stone meal upon the sticky cloth and laid the beaten copper discs along the line of Khensu’s arm where the pulse jumped like a trapped mouse.

When the strip was wrapped around the ruined wrist, Bako took Khensu by the beard and shouted into his ear holes: “Do not look upon the leaking red water! When the water leaks, you look upon it and your spirit runs down the hill like rain on slate! Shut the mouth of your head and pull the air into your stomach until the navel hits the backbone!”

Khensu, being terrified of the ditch, obeyed the old man whose eyes were cloudy like sheep fat. He pulled the air into his chest. At first the air was jagged like broken pots, and his arm throbbed so greatly that his vision went green and purple. But Bako pressed his thumb against the middle disc of copper. As the old man pressed, the copper bit into the flesh, and the linen shrank until it was as tight as a bowstring on an ox-hide stave.

The writing upon the broken clay tablet says that a great quietness entered the arm. The red life water did not spray forth any longer; it slowed until it was only a thick crust that sealed itself like mud on a furnace door. The blue veins that had been swollen and purple like wild grapes smoothed out and lay flat against the bone. Khensu felt a coldness like well water run down from his elbow into his crooked fingers, and though the stone had mashed the flesh, the strength did not run out into the dirt.

“Stand upon your feet,” said Bako, as recorded by the scribe who did not know the words for tendons and called them cords of ox-gut. “The stone falls because the earth is heavy, but the man remains upright because his wind is tied in a bundle. If you let the wind scatter, the dog eats your meal.”

Khensu stood up among the builders. The heavy block of basalt still lay upon the skids, half-fallen. The master mason shouted that the block must be dragged away before the sunset closed the city gate, or all twenty men would lose their copper pay for that day. Khensu, with his arm bound in the slate-colored rag and the red copper buttons shining like little eyes, stepped to the heavy ropes. The other men cried out that his arm would fall off at the elbow if he pulled upon the hemp.

Khensu took the rope in his broken hand. He did not yell a war cry, for a war cry empties the belly of its hot steam. He shut his teeth and breathed in the five measures that the old recorder had hummed into his ears. When the team heaved, the linen on his arm did not stretch, but became hard like dry wood. The copper discs hummed with a sound like a wasp in a clay jar. The crushing weight of the five-ton basalt block dragged across the skids, and though the pain inside the wrist was like a red iron nail, the wrap held the meat together so that the bone did not part from the socket. The block was set into the gate before Helios went down behind the western sea, and the master gave every man his measure of dry beans and his two pieces of nickel.

The story goes on through three more broken pillars of text, telling how Khensu never took the wrap from his lower limb. When he slept in the hovel with his woman and his goats, he left the cloth tied. When the autumn rains fell and the joint-rot took the elders of Tasian so that they could not lift the hoe, Khensu walked into the muddy terraces and dug ditches from morning until the shadows were long, because the band around his arm kept the cold humors from settling in his marrow.

In the forty-seventh year of his labor, a band of desert raiders came down from the dry hills to steal the stored barley from the storehouse of the local mayor. They were men of bad heart who had sharp axes made of river bronze. Khensu was by the granary door with only a wooden measuring rod in his left fist. A raider of large stature swung an axe at Khensu’s neck, intending to make two pieces of him. Khensu, having no shield, lifted his bound forearm into the path of the bronze blade.

The chronicler who wrote in the old dialect of the islands wrote: “The axe came down as the thunder falls upon a willow, but the linen band spoke with the voice of a bronze cymbal. The metal of the axe did not cut the cloth, nor did the bone of the mason snap like a dry reed. The strike was made into nothing, as when a stone is cast into a deep bog. The raider was amazed in his liver, and while he stared upon his axe that had bounced backward into his own forehead, Khensu struck him upon the ear with the measuring rod so that he fell down and did not rise.”

Khensu lived until he was eighty and four years, which was very rare in those days before the apothecaries had shops with glass bottles. When his soul became tired and left the avatar to go into the sea of the dead where the goddess Gaialilith sits upon the roots of the world, the priests came to wash the corpse. They tried to cut the linen wrap from the wrist with an iron razor, but the razor was dulled against the threads and would not bite.

They buried the old mason in the shale outside the wall with the wrap still clinging to his dry bones. It is written that three hundred years later, when the water of the ocean rose up and washed the cemetery into the surf during the great storm of the third age, the bones of the mason were scattered into the deep trenches where the fish dwell, but the wrap was found upon the shingle by an oyster-picker. The copper was still bright, having no green rust upon it, and the grey linen was still dry, though it had lain beneath forty cubits of salt water.

The oyster-picker put the band upon his own arm because his wrist was sore from prying shells, and as soon as the knots were drawn, his hand was steady and he felt no cold from the foam of the breakers. Thus the item was copied by the weavers of the port, though none knew any longer the true name of the old scribe who had first rolled the copper in his spit.

Moral of the story: When the mountain falls upon the hand, the fool screams and bleeds into the dirt until he dies, but the wise man binds his breath to his bones and lets the iron bounce off his skin.

Tasian Meridian Wrap

  • Description & Lore: An antique wrist binding constructed from coarse slate-gray cotton interwoven with oxidized copper discs and tarnished metallic threads. Recovered from Mediterranean and Near Eastern excavation strata, this artifact stabilizes the wearer’s autonomic nervous system through acupressure and esoteric respiratory conditioning, providing physical anchoring against biological trauma at the expense of manual agility.
  • Item Type: Enchanted Artifact / Arcane Curio
  • Sanity Cost: 1D3 Sanity points upon first successful attunement and activation.
  • Game Mechanics:
    • Physiological Stabilization: When worn securely against the bare wrist, the artifact immediately staunches major hemorrhaging. If the investigator is suffering from ongoing bleeding or fluid loss, the loss rate is reduced by 1 hit point per combat round.
    • Kinetic Dissipation: The binding deadens direct physical shock. The investigator gains 1 point of armor against non-magical blunt impacts, falling debris, or unarmed attacks. This does not protect against firearms, explosions, or penetrating blade attacks.
    • Somatic Focus: Once per day, the investigator may spend 2 Magic Points and spend one full combat round regulating their breathing. This action restores 1D2 Hit Points.
    • Tactical Drawback: The rigid compression of the wrist imposes a penalty die on all Sleight of Hand, Locksmith, or delicate mechanical repair rolls while the band is fastened.
