Persian 481 of the Royal Assayers Loupe

  • Lore:
    • During the consolidation of early trade networks across the seventy-three island continents of Saṃsāra, border outposts and harbor checkpoints faced constant deception from travelers attempting to bypass tariffs, conceal contraband, and smuggle forged manifests. Drawing upon ancient Persian bureaucratic sorcery and the meticulous accounting practices of the Achaemenid royal treasuries, guild inspectors crafted specialized optical devices to enforce imperial law. The artisans integrated electrum wire with desert glass treated in saffron brine and inscribed with royal seals of truthfulness. Persian 481 of the Royal Assayer’s Loupe was distributed to trusted gate wardens, port tax collectors, and transit inspectors, granting newly arrived Tier 1 avatars the discernment needed to scrutinize cargo, uncover hidden compartments, verify authentic seals, and ensure that every coin entering the city vaults was accounted for under lawful toll.
  • Description:
    • This implement consists of a thick, teardrop-shaped lens of pale amber glass held within an engraved electrum casing. The metal frame is inscribed with microscopic Persian cuneiform detailing decrees of weights, measures, and honest trade, accented by miniature stamp motifs representing royal scales. A fine electrum chain with a curved ear-hook allows the loupe to rest comfortably over the right or left eye socket, leaving both hands unencumbered for inspecting crates and counting coin. When peering through the lens, the world takes on a warm, amber cast, and surfaces bearing hidden seals, concealed seams, or chemical tampering emit a faint, rose-gold phosphor. The casing remains faintly cool against the cheekbone and gives off the dry, clean aroma of pressed papyrus, dried cedar shavings, and mint ink.
  • Detailed Stats:
    • Item Rank: Common (Tier 1)
    • Resilience: 10
    • Item Hit Points: Avatar Maximum Hit Points plus 10 (Derived from Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
    • Armor Check (AC): +0 AC bonus (Non-defensive sensory inspection focus)
    • Weight: 0.5 pounds
    • Attunement Requirements: Simple attunement requiring 1 full minute of focus while adjusting the lens over the eye, or instant attunement if held directly in an active hand slot.
    • Durability Mechanics: If the item suffers damage equal to half its HP or less, it becomes cracked and broken, causing its enchantments to cease until repaired. If reduced to 0 HP, it shatters into fine desert glass shards and frayed electrum threading. Targeted strikes while unattuned roll damage directly against its HP pool.
  • Slot:
    • Eye Slot (worn over one eye, leaving normal vision in the opposing eye intact and taking up 1 head/face sensory gear slot)
  • Passive Magics:
    • Manifest Discernment: Peering through the lens at any written travel permit, bill of lading, ledger, or identification paper reveals subtle inconsistencies, forged signatures, or altered numerals. The avatar receives a +1 bonus on all skill checks made to detect counterfeit documents, appraise trade goods, or assess standard customs tariffs.
    • Seam-Finder’s Gaze: When inspecting crates, wagons, pack saddles, or luggage for at least 1 minute, the loupe highlights false bottoms, hidden compartments, secret pockets, and hollowed-out cargo with a soft amber luminescence, granting a +1 bonus to all perception and investigation checks related to discovering concealed items.
    • Assayer’s Purity: Looking directly at coins, raw ore, or precious gems instantly informs the wearer’s Mind’s Eye of their material composition, purity percentage, and true weight, completely nullifying attempts by merchants or smugglers to pass off debased electrum, gilded lead, or counterfeit currency.
  • Activable Magics:
    • Seal of Asha’s Scrutiny: As an action lasting less than 6 seconds, the avatar touches the electrum casing and focuses their gaze on a single target, container, or vehicle within 15 feet while invoking the royal decree of honest transit. A focused beam of amber light projects from the lens. The target must make an opposed roll against the avatar’s investigation or social skill. On a failure, any non-magical or common magical contraband, concealed weapons, or illicit alchemical substances within the target’s immediate possession flare with bright crimson light visible to all observers for 1 minute. This ability can be used twice per session.
    • Taxman’s Binding Stare: As an attack or defensive reaction targeting an individual within 20 feet who attempts to flee an inspection or bypass a checkpoint, the avatar flashes the lens with condensed solar energy. The target must succeed on an opposed roll or suffer the Hobbled condition until the end of their next turn, their boots feeling weighed down as though laden with heavy sacks of imperial lead coins, reducing their movement speed by half.
    • Cuneiform Ledger Stamp: As a utility action requiring 1 minute of focus, the avatar breathes across the lens and presses the flat electrum frame onto a travel writ, wooden crate, or parchment seal. The device burns a glowing amber Persian cuneiform stamp of lawful clearance onto the surface. The mark remains for 24 hours, alerting any border guard, city sentry, or guild official who views it that the cargo has been officially inspected and cleared, granting a +2 bonus to social rolls made to pass subsequent city gates without delay.

Commerce and Acquisition Venues for Persian 481 of the Royal Assayer’s Loupe

  • Customs Clearinghouses and Harbor Tax Offices:
    • Venue Type and Setting: High-traffic bureaucratic depots and official revenue clearinghouses positioned immediately past harbor sea gates, grand canal locks, and municipal transit checkpoints in port cities like Aterian, Tayacian, and the riverine borders of Mesopotamia. These stone-walled compounds smell of bitter ledger ink, salt water, and dried seal wax, lined with barred clerk windows and heavy iron safes overseen by sworn royal magistrates.
    • Acquisition Method: Avatars acquire these implements as standard-issue tools of the trade or surplus auction lots. Prospective buyers inspect the optic by activating their Mind’s Eye, confirming its common Tier 1 ranking, pristine glass purity, intact electrum cuneiform inscriptions, and official customs accreditation.
    • Buying Cost: The baseline municipal issue price is 50 silver coins (or 5 gold coins). Independent operators pay the full 50 silver. Avatars presenting verified credentials as bonded tax agents, harbor wardens, or members of the Cartographers’ and Assayers’ Guild receive a standard 10% discount per character tier. For a Tier 1 avatar, this reduces the price by 5 silver, totaling 45 silver.
    • Selling Protocol and Haggling: Bureaucratic clearinghouses accept returned or surplus loupes from certified inspectors at a standard buyback rate discounted by 10% per tier level of the seller (45 silver for a Tier 1 avatar). Accepted funds are wired directly into the character’s World Bank account minus the statutory 1% transaction fee rounded up to the nearest copper token. Unbonded citizens attempting to liquidate state-stamped assaying gear must submit to a background check verifying the item was not looted from a fallen officer.
  • Lapidary Ateliers and Moneychangers’ Guilds:
    • Venue Type and Setting: Secure, well-guarded counting houses, gem-cutting workshops, and assayers’ offices situated in central commercial districts and bullion markets. These storefronts feature iron-grilled counters, brass balance scales, velvet display cushions, and magnifying cabinets, overseen by veteran moneyers and appraiser-mages.
    • Acquisition Method: Sold alongside fine balance weights, touchstones, and jeweler’s chiseled tools. Buyers test the loupe directly on sample silver ingots and gemstone facets to observe the chromatic aura and purity readouts in their field of vision.
    • Buying Cost: High-end lapidaries stock polished, private-label editions of the loupe for 55 to 60 silver coins, charging a slight premium for fine electrum ear-hook fittings and custom leather cases. Recognized merchant guild members who display their trade pins qualify for the 10% tier discount, bringing the price to 49.5 silver (rounded to 50 silver or paid with 49 silver and 5 copper).
    • Selling Protocol and Haggling: Moneychangers eagerly purchase well-kept loupes, offering 45 to 50 silver depending on current bullion trade volume. Sellers are paid immediately through an encrypted ledger transfer to their World Bank account, though private moneyers may offer physical trade bars of stamped silver upon request.
  • Shadow Bazaars and Smugglers’ Docks:
    • Venue Type and Setting: Unregulated floating markets, secluded cavern wharfs, and illicit pawnshops hidden behind waterfront dive bars. These operations thrive in areas where counterfeit bills of lading and contraband cargo must slip past municipal cordons undetected.
    • Acquisition Method: Traded covertly from locked iron strongboxes without bills of sale, manifests, or legal documentation. Smugglers and fence syndicates purchase these devices to inspect their own counterfeit goods, check for tracking enchantments, and discover rival stowaways or hidden contraband.
    • Buying Cost: Shadow brokers mark up assaying tools due to high demand among smugglers needing to spot city-gate inspection wards. The loupe commands between 65 and 85 silver coins. Guild discounts are entirely disregarded, and transactions must be paid strictly in physical silver, raw gold dust, or untraceable electrum rings, as black-market fences refuse World Bank monitoring.
    • Selling Protocol and Haggling: Smuggling rings and fences will pay 40 to 60 silver in cold coin to acquire genuine customs assaying tools, particularly if the item retains an active Cuneiform Ledger Stamp that can be analyzed or forged. Transactions are instantaneous, hand-to-hand, and carried out with no questions asked.
  • Border Waystations and Caravan Supply Posts:
    • Venue Type and Setting: Fortified toll stations and desert oasis outposts along trans-continental trade highways and overland caravan routes. These outposts combine a frontier trade depot with a military customs gate, serving wagon trains and pack trains crossing state borders.
    • Acquisition Method: Sold directly from quartermaster stores or traveling factor wagons catering to merchants preparing for impending border inspections.
    • Buying Cost: Subject to supply shortages and border crossing logistics. A quartermaster in an isolated desert outpost may price the loupe at 55 to 70 silver coins. Avatars purchasing the optic within municipal toll zones are subject to local administrative overhead, including the mandatory 5% border transit tax, 1% local municipal fee, and the 1 silver per-person gate passage tariff.
    • Selling Protocol and Haggling: Waystation merchants purchase functional loupes for 40 to 45 silver to replace broken field gear for border guards. Legitimate caravan factors wire payouts into the avatar’s World Bank account, registering the sale in the highway transit manifest.

Environmental Tactical Applications and Roleplay for Persian 481 of the Royal Assayer’s Loupe

  • Fortified City Gates and Border Checkpoints:
    • Offensive Roleplay: Standing in the inspection lane as an armored merchant wagon attempts to rumble past the gate barrier without paying state tolls, the avatar raises a hand to halt the draft beasts. Peering through the teardrop lens, the avatar triggers Seal of Asha’s Scrutiny, directing an amber beam of concentrated truth over the cargo bed. Within the wagon’s double walls, two crates of untaxed alchemical sulfur ignite with bright crimson luminescence visible to every nearby sentry. The driver reaches for a hidden cudgel, but the avatar points directly at the glowing red outline, formally announcing the seizure of contraband and charging the team with tax evasion under imperial law.
    • Defensive Roleplay: When a corrupt guild factor attempts to pass off an altered transit pass and bribe the avatar with a pouch of heavy electrum coinage, the avatar engages Assayer’s Purity and Manifest Discernment. A single glance reveals the coins are seventy percent lead coated in cheap gold wash, and the parchment stamp bears microscopic erasure abrasions. Rather than being duped into accepting forged legal tender or false documents that could lead to disciplinary arrest, the avatar flatly refuses the bribes and calls forth municipal wardens to detain the factor.
  • Crowded Harbor Wharfs and Smuggler Canals:
    • Offensive Roleplay: Amid a chaotic fish market where illicit cargo is being unloaded from shallow-draft skiffs, a suspected smuggler breaks away into a full sprint down the damp wooden pier. The avatar activates the Taxman’s Binding Stare, aiming the electrum rim directly at the runner’s back. A flash of condensed solar light strikes the smuggler, and the target stumbles instantly into a heavy, grinding halt as if their boots had been filled with solid ingots of customs lead. Hobbled and dragging their legs across the slick timbers, the smuggler is overtaken and secured before reaching a getaway skiff.
    • Defensive Roleplay: Navigating a misty, poorly lit warehouse along the canal where rival fencing syndicates lurk in the rafters, the avatar activates Seam-Finder’s Gaze. The amber-tinted perspective cuts through the darkness, illuminating not only hidden cargo holds beneath the floorboards but also the cold metallic glimmer of spring-loaded tripwires and concealed crossbow slits set to ambush incoming inspectors, allowing the party to maneuver through the loading bay unharmed.
  • Subterranean Ruins and Ancient Vaults:
    • Offensive Roleplay: Confronting a cunning tomb bandit attempting to conceal a stolen sacred royal signet inside a hollowed-out stone waterskin, the avatar activates Seal of Asha’s Scrutiny. The amber beam penetrates the false canteen, causing the sacred seal inside to glow like a burning ember through the porous stone. Deprived of plausible deniability, the thief drops their pack and surrenders the artifact without forcing a prolonged, bloody skirmish in the dark.
    • Defensive Roleplay: In a deep crypt containing centuries of untracked imperial tribute, the wielder examines the treasure chests using Assayer’s Purity. While the party reaches eagerly toward piles of shimmering chalices, the avatar spots an unnatural, dull grey baseline through the lens—identifying the hoard as deadly arsenic-laced pewter masquerading as silver bullion. The avatar orders the party to withdraw hands, preventing lethal contact poisoning.
  • High-Altitude Airship Docks and Sky-Bazaars:
    • Offensive Roleplay: Aboard a moored cargo dirigible preparing for immediate takeoff, a foreign operative poses as an accredited royal courier to secure clearance for an uninspected trunk. The avatar demands the writ of passage and uses Manifest Discernment. The lens exposes the wax seal as a clever resin mold and the imperial signature as an ink tracing lacking ancient bureaucratic micro-script. The avatar invokes Taxman’s Binding Stare to freeze the operative on the gangway while whistling for the sky-dock constabulary.
    • Defensive Roleplay: While balancing on a narrow maintenance catwalk suspended thousands of feet above the clouds, a fleeing saboteur turns and hurls a flash-powder canister to blind their pursuers. Peering steadily through the polarized amber lens, the glass filters the sudden concussive flare into manageable, warm light, completely shielding the avatar from temporary optical blindness and allowing them to maintain sure footing without plummeting over the rail.

Perception of Activation:

  • Visual Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: Peering through the teardrop lens, your vision in that eye shifts into a warm, amber-washed clarity where environmental glare and shadows are sharply delineated. When Seal of Asha’s Scrutiny activates, a lance of concentrated amber light shoots forward from the glass, causing false seams, concealed compartments, and illicit goods in the target container to fluoresce with a violent, glowing crimson aura. When Taxman’s Binding Stare is unleashed, a sudden, blinding point of condensed solar light flashes across the electrum rim directly along your line of sight. Peering at ledgers under Manifest Discernment, altered numerals and forged strokes appear overlaid with shimmering, rose-gold cuneiform corrections.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders see the small teardrop optic over your eye suddenly gleam with an intense amber phosphorescence that illuminates your cheek and brow. When Asha’s Scrutiny is projected, a visible, narrow beam of amber light pierces across the room; wherever it strikes hidden contraband, a bright crimson flare illuminates the illicit items through crates or clothing. When Binding Stare is discharged, observers see an instantaneous solar flare flash from the rim, casting long, sharp shadows across the floor.
    • Positives: Hidden objects, false bottoms, and forged inks are instantly brought to unmistakable visual clarity, piercing darkness and cutting through mundane camouflage.
    • Negatives: The brilliant beam and glowing crimson contraband create a conspicuous optical display that immediately alerts nearby criminals, corrupt officials, and bystanders that an active inspection is underway.
  • Auditory Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: A high-pitched, crystalline chime resonates against your orbital bone the moment the enchantments catch, followed by a rhythmic, subdued metallic ticking that sounds like the gears of an intricate water-clock or the clicking of balance weights upon brass pans. When the Taxman’s Binding Stare fires, a sharp crack similar to a snapping leather ledger strap echoes in your ear.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Those standing within ten paces hear a soft, metallic ringing tone, followed by the faint, rhythmic ticking of shifting balance mechanisms emanating from the electrum casing. Targets struck by the Binding Stare hear the dull, heavy clatter of falling lead bullion echoing around their feet as their movement slows.
    • Positives: The auditory cues confirm the precise moment of verification without requiring verbal confirmation, helping the user time their inspection.
    • Negatives: The sharp crack and mechanical ticking can carry down quiet stone corridors or silent warehouse aisles, alerting concealed sentries to the inspector’s presence.
  • Tactile Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: The electrum frame against your cheekbone turns from ambient temperature to a dry, soothing coolness, reminiscent of polished river stone submerged in shade. When channeling Asha’s Scrutiny, a light, prickly static buzzes across your temple and eyelid, causing your brow hairs to stand slightly on end. When executing the Cuneiform Ledger Stamp, the metal rim heats to a steady, firm warmth like fresh sealing wax beneath your fingers.
    • Observer’s Perspective: If an observer touches the user during activation, they feel a subtle, localized chill on the skin nearest the device. A fleeing target struck by Taxman’s Binding Stare experiences a sudden, crushing heaviness around their calves and ankles, their limbs feeling as though they are wading through cold, dense slurry or dragging lead ballast.
    • Positives: The soothing coolness around the eye reduces eye strain and prevents facial fatigue during long shifts of document scrutiny.
    • Negatives: The static tingling along the temple can trigger minor localized twitching or muscle fatigue across the eyelid after extended consecutive uses.
  • Olfactory Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: The air immediately before your face fills with the crisp, clean scent of dry mountain cedar shavings, crushed mint ink, and fresh papyrus. This scent cuts cleanly through whatever ambient air is present.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within five feet catches a sudden, distinct whiff of ancient archival vaults, bitter iron gall ink, and dried saffron, as if a long-sealed tax register had just been flipped open in the room.
    • Positives: The astringent aroma completely masks foul odors such as rotting harbor bilges, stale bilge water, unwashed pack animals, or sewer gases.
    • Negatives: The unnatural scent of bureaucratic archives and pressed cedar makes the user easy to track by scent-trained animals in wilderness or damp environments.
  • Gustatory Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: An astringent, dry taste coats the roof of your mouth, similar to having touched a clean copper coin to the tongue, layered with a faint hint of sweet, mineralized saffron tea.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Smugglers or suspects subjected to Asha’s Scrutiny report a sudden, chalky, dry taste on their lips, as though they had inhaled limestone dust or dry parchment shavings.
    • Positives: The metallic astringency heightens alertness and suppresses hunger pangs during prolonged watch posts.
    • Negatives: The taste leaves a persistent, dry thirst that makes long verbal interrogations raspy without a ready flask of water.
  • Extra-Sensory and Metaphysical Perception:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • Asha’s Accounting Lattice: In your Mind’s Eye, the physical world superimposes itself onto an orderly, three-dimensional grid of glowing electrum lines. Matter is perceived through weight, purity, and volume; debased metals, hollow voids, and chemical counterfeits appear as ragged distortions or broken knots in the geometric lattice.
      • Weight of Law: A profound sensation of bureaucratic certainty settles into your chest. Doubts regarding identity, currency worth, or document authenticity are stripped away, replaced by an absolute, quantifiable understanding of truth and false value.
      • Mana Scrutiny: Ambient magic threads passing through the lens are sorted into neat, parallel streams, allowing you to sense the precise magical tier and school of low-level spells active on inspected cargo.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • True Sight Scrutiny: Avatars observing with True Sight see an ancient Persian seal of balance hovering in front of the lens, glowing in ultraviolet light with microscopic cuneiform laws rotating in concentric rings around the optic.
      • Soul Sight Judgment: Observers viewing the user through Soul Sight witness the avatar’s aura sharpen into a rigid, crystalline column of gold and white light, radiating a chilling, incorruptible authority that discourages lies.
      • Aura of Bureaucratic Dread: Suspects attempting fraud or carrying contraband within twenty paces experience an instinctive knot of guilt and unease in their gut, as if an imperial magistrate were staring directly through their ribs into their conscience.
    • Positives: The absolute mental clarity completely eliminates indecision, second-guessing, and susceptibility to petty illusions or mundane sleight of hand.
    • Negatives: The rigid metaphysical mindset makes creative intuition, empathy, and off-the-cuff deceit difficult to sustain while the device is attuned to your senses.

Crafting Recipe: Persian 481 of the Royal Assayer’s Loupe

  • Materials Needed:
    • Desert Sand Crystal: 1 uncut raw desert glass node of pale amber hue, free of carbon inclusions.
    • Electrum Ingot: 1 small bar of refined electrum (a 50/50 natural alloy of gold and silver).
    • Electrum Wire: 1 spool of fine-gauge electrum wire (for the hinge, chain, and ear-hook loop).
    • Saffron Brine Solution: 1 vial of distilled water infused with dried mountain saffron, rock salt, and mint extract.
    • Sacrificial Component: 1 mundane jeweler’s loupe, reading monocle, or brass magnifying glass (Tier 1; completely consumed and disintegrated during the attunement process).
    • Alchemical Reagents: 1 small phial of acacia tree sap resin (used as an optical adhesive) and a pinch of ground brimstone ash.
  • Tools Required:
    • Lapidary Wheel & Polishing Slurry: Fine emery wheel and jeweler’s rouge for grinding and polishing optical curved glass.
    • Engraver’s Chisel (Burin): Ultra-fine hardened steel burin capable of inscribing microscopic cuneiform characters.
    • Jeweler’s Benches & Pliers: Precision needle-nose pliers, wire snips, and a miniature hand-vice.
    • Fluid Collector: Fine pipette instrument for controlled application of volatile saffron brines and liquid resins.
    • Small Arcane Brazier: Controlled heat hearth to anneal the electrum housing and melt the sacrificial focus.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Jewelcrafting / Lapidary: Skill Level 2 (trained).
    • Metalsmithing / Engraving: Skill Level 2 (trained).
    • Alchemical Crafting: Skill Level 1 (trained).
    • Bureaucracy / Scribe’s Law: Skill Level 1 (to accurately transcribe the official cuneiform weight and measure statutes).
    • Mind’s Eye Proficiency: Required to monitor structural resilience, manage mana conduits, and bond the attunement threads.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1: Lens Grinding and Quenching:
      • Shape the raw amber desert crystal on the lapidary wheel into a smooth, teardrop-shaped convex lens measuring two inches along its longest axis.
      • Heat the glass over the arcane brazier until glowing faintly, then quench it directly in the saffron brine solution using the fluid collector. This tempers the glass, granting the optic its amber-cast perspective and resonance for detecting concealed chemical tampering.
    • Step 2: Electrum Frame Forging:
      • Heat the electrum ingot in the brazier and hammer it into a narrow, grooved bezel ring fitted exactly to the teardrop contours of the lens.
      • Attach an electrum hinge bracket at the base and fashion the trailing ear-hook chain from the spooled electrum wire, ensuring balanced weight distribution for hands-free wear over an eye socket.
    • Step 3: Inscribing the Statutes of Asha:
      • Mount the electrum bezel in the hand-vice. Using the fine burin, carve microscopic Persian cuneiform script along the entire outer rim, inscribing the traditional imperial decrees of lawful weights, customs tariffs, and royal truth seals.
      • Rub ground brimstone ash mixed with acacia resin into the fresh grooves to darken the script and seal the conduits for arcane flow.
    • Step 4: Optical Assembly:
      • Seat the polished amber lens into the electrum bezel groove.
      • Use fine pliers to crimp the inner lip of the metal frame, locking the crystal firmly in place without inducing stress fractures in the glass.
    • Step 5: Sacrificial Transference and Arcane Attunement:
      • Place the newly assembled loupe alongside the mundane sacrificial glass into the arcane brazier.
      • Ignite the hearth using low-heat coals and open your Mind’s Eye to view the magical resonance grid.
      • Channel your intent, drawing the latent optical clarity from the mundane glass as it melts away, transferring its conceptual purpose directly into the electrum cuneiform channels of the loupe.
      • Maintain constant focus for at least 1 full minute as the electrum bands fuse with the amber glass, completing the attunement threads and permanently anchoring its investigative enchantments.

Crooked Ledger, Forty Jars of Stinking Oil, and Scribe Whose Eye Did Not Sleep

In the cycles before the moon-well was notched by seventy-and-three marks of the sky-rulers, when the river did not have stone embankments but spilled its brown grease over the gardens of the pig-keepers, there stood the mud gate of Shur-of-the-Scales. It was not a city of tall brick, for the great woman-emperor who rode the two-headed bull had not yet been dropped from the cloud; it was a gathering of seven hundred huts made of river-reeds and dry cow-pats, where the rafts tied up when the north water went down. At this gate sat the assayer whose signs upon the burnt bone were written like two crossed measuring-sticks, but the carriers of the baskets called him Piruz-the-Squint.

He had no bronze spear, nor did he own forty red oxen with split hooves. His bench was a broken millstone that had cracked in the great dry summer, and his clothes were of rough nettle-cloth that had turned grey from the salt of his sweat. His father had been an engraver of grave-posts, and his grandfather had died under the wheels of a copper cart because he could not hear the driver shouting in the foreign dialect. Piruz had only one eye that looked straight into the sun; his left eye was clouded like a curd of goat-milk, having been struck by a flying flint-flake when he was six winters old, watching the quarrymen cut the foundation-piers for the grain-silos.

In those days, the law was not kept in books of skin, because the sheep were small and their hides were eaten by the worms; it was kept upon sticks of tamarisk wood that had three notches for the barley, two notches for the dried fish, and five notches for the jars of lard. But the river-merchants who came from the southern flats were men whose tongues were like oily water sliding over a round stone. They brought knives made of thin river-reed with which they sliced off the notches while the gatekeepers were taking their porridge in the shade of the reed-screens, and they filled the bottom half of their oil-pots with the heavy river-silt, pouring only three fingers of sweet olive-grease upon the top so that the skimming-feather came up fragrant when the watchman dipped it.

Because of this, the great storehouse of the gate was always empty of good meal, but full of stinking mud and rotten wicker. When the high king’s tax-gatherers came down the river on their rafts of inflated sheep-bladders, blowing their long horns of cow-horn, they beat the gatekeepers with heavy whips of hippopotamus-hide until their backs were like raw liver, crying: “Where is the fat of the third moon, and why does the grain-pot contain only cockle-burs and the droppings of the river-mice?”

Piruz-the-Squint sat upon his cracked millstone and saw his cousins beaten until their teeth fell out upon the hard dirt. He had no silver to give the runners, for a scribe of the low ditch received only two measures of parched spelt and half an onion for every sixty wagons he counted. He took his dead father’s cutting-iron, which was no longer than a child’s little finger, and he went out into the salt-flats where the great white wind blows the dust into sharp cones that travel like walking men.

For nine days he walked where no well is dug, following the dry bone-tracks of the wild donkeys. On the tenth sunset, when his tongue had swollen until it pressed against his front teeth like a piece of dry leather, he reached the place called the Red Furnace of the Seven Sages. There, the earth had broken open, and out of the black crack rose a blue smoke that did not blow away with the wind, but stood straight like an electrum pillar supporting the roof of the night.

Beside the crack sat the ancient clerk who has no belly, whose name in the bird-script is written with the sign of the plumb-bob and the open balance-beam. His skin was not the skin of a mortal man; it was made of dried papyrus that had been soaked in mountain pitch, and through his ribs one could see the stars moving as if through the wicker wall of a fisherman’s hut. He had six brass spectacles tied about his temples with strings of sinew, and his fingers were twelve inches long, tipped with claws of electrum that constantly scratched calculations into the glowing embers of the sulfur-hole.

The ancient clerk spoke, and his voice was like the sound of dry wheat pouring through an iron sieve: “Why does the one-eyed mud-counter come into the place where the true weight is kept? Do you seek the gold of the deep cistern, or the red stone that makes the spear-point pass through bull-hide?”

Piruz-the-Squint bowed his face until his forehead touched the sulfur-crust, which was warm like the belly of a sleeping mule. He said: “I want neither the red stone nor the yellow butter-metal, for my house has no locks and the river-thieves would slit my throat before the third watch. Give me a stone through which the eye can see the water in the honey, the lead in the silver ring, and the false notch upon the wood; for the merchants have made a laughing-stock of the king’s seal, and my cousins are being beaten until their marrow runs upon the clay.”

The six-spectacled clerk clicked his electrum claws together, and the sound was like forty balance-weights falling into an iron tray. “The children of the dirt love the lie,” said he, “for the lie is soft like lard and sweet like boiled grape-juice. Truth is a cold needle that enters the eye and makes the brain weep. If I give you the glass of Asha, you will never see a woman who looks fair, nor a friend whose heart does not contain three drams of black bile; you will see the rotten wood beneath the varnish, and the dirt in the king’s bread.”

“Let the needle enter,” answered Piruz, “for the whip of the tax-runner has already taken the skin from my brothers’ shoulders, and I would rather weep from the cold stone than bleed under the hippopotamus-thong.”

Then the clerk took from between his paper ribs a single tear of hardened gum that had fallen from the sky-cedar when the sun was first struck with the hammer. He thrust the tear into the sulfur-smoke until it melted into a drop of pale yellow glass, clear as the oil that comes from the first pressing of the wild almond. He took a wire of native electrum that had never been smelted with charcoal, bent it into a hoop with his long claws, and set the glass within the groove, inscribing upon the rim forty-and-two signs that mean: The balance does not incline to the brother, nor does the plumb-line bend for the prince.

“Hang this over the dark eye,” the ancient one commanded. “Do not wash it in the river-water, for the river is full of the dirt of the dead; wash it only in the vinegar of the wild pomegranate. When you look through it, the gold that is false shall turn to grey soot, and the hidden hole shall blaze like an ember in the dry straw.”

Piruz took the teardrop glass, hung its electrum chain over his left ear, and fitted the cold rim into the socket of his clouded eye. Instantly, the grey curd of his blindness did not break; it turned into a burning yellow day. He looked at the sulfur-crack, and he did not see smoke; he saw millions of small brass numbers climbing into the air like ants upon an overturned honey-pot, each number telling the number of grains of sand that were in the mountain and the amount of fat that had been burned by the fire since the earth was soft.

He walked back to Shur-of-the-Scales, and his stride was no longer the hesitating shamble of a blind man; it was the measured step of an inspector who knows where the stone has been laid crooked.

When he sat once more upon his cracked millstone by the river-barrier, there came a great flotilla of thirty barges belonging to the Great Factor of the Southern Marsh, a man named Bar-Zik whose belly was wrapped in twelve yards of purple linen and whose fingers bore rings of sea-shell and red amber. Bar-Zik had brought forty earthen jars, each as tall as a man’s shoulder, sealed with the yellow clay of the low canals and stamped with the figure of a sleeping bull, which was the sign of the honest merchants.

“Open the gate, scribe of the dung-heap!” shouted Bar-Zik, casting a piece of lead-silver at Piruz’s feet. “These are forty jars of the purest mountain tallow for the king’s lamps, and eighty sacks of dry lentils for the palace archers. My manifest is written upon the finest calf-skin, signed by the governor of the lower wells. Touch the barrier-lever, for the wind is changing and my oarsmen must eat their beans before dark.”

The young gate-sentries, whose chins had not yet grown hair, reached to lift the heavy pine timber that blocked the water-way; but Piruz-the-Squint stood upon his feet, lifted his chin, and turned his left eye toward the barges.

Through the teardrop loupe, the world lost its mud-brown haze and took on the sharp, unforgiving brilliance of polished brass. Piruz did not see forty jars of clean tallow; he saw forty jars of stinking black river-mud, upon which floated three inches of sheep-grease mixed with the bile of dead dogs to give it a yellow color. Inside the third jar, he saw no mud at all; he saw the crouched body of an assassin with an oiled iron cleaver strapped to his thigh, holding his breath under a reed breathing-tube that poked through the wicker stopper.

He looked at the calf-skin manifest in Bar-Zik’s hand, and the ink that had appeared black and true to the common eye began to smoke through the amber glass. The letters of the governor’s name dissolved into crawling grey maggots that showed where the old parchment had been scraped with a dull razor and rewritten with lamp-soot and gum-water.

“There is no tallow in these pots,” Piruz said, and his voice was not the voice of a ditch-scribe; it was like the click of a stone balance-weight striking a plate of bronze. “There is only the rotten sludge of the reed-beds, and in the third pot there sits a man with an iron chopper, waiting to slit the throats of the watchmen while they sleep.”

Bar-Zik grew white like the belly of a dead catfish, but he was an old wolf of the docks and had sixty spearmen hidden beneath the straw mats of the second barge. “The one-eyed beggar has run mad from the sun!” he bellowed. “Cut him down and burn the gate-house, that we may bring the king’s goods through the canal!”

The spearmen leaped from the straw, their copper knives glittering in the noon sun; but Piruz did not reach for a cudgel. He pressed the electrum frame of the loupe against his cheekbone, channeled the ancient decree of the honest market into his heart, and stared directly into the eyes of Bar-Zik.

A focused ray of amber light, bright as the star that brings the high flood, shot from the teardrop lens. As it struck the chest of the Great Factor, the purple linen of his robe seemed to disappear, revealing beneath it three bags of forbidden poison-roots from the southern islands, strapped across his ribs with gut-strings. The ray shifted to the third jar, and the clay vessel immediately began to glow with a violent, bloody crimson phosphorescence, so bright that the mud walls of the pot became like clear horn, exposing the murderer huddled inside with his cleaver drawn.

“Treachery!” cried the young sentries. They dropped the barrier-bar, seized their heavy olive-wood clubs, and blew the copper alarms that brought the armored archers running from the city garrison.

Bar-Zik turned his barge to flee down-stream, shouting to his rowers to break the water; but Piruz flashed the lens once more, discharging the full solar heat that was stored within the tempered desert glass. The light struck the stern of the merchant’s boat, and immediately the rowers felt their limbs become heavy like sacks of wet sand. Their oars seemed made of lead ingots; their wrists locked against the gunwales, and their boats ceased to move, caught in the water as if the mud of the river-bed had risen up to seize the keels.

The king’s archers boarded the barges without losing a single man. They dragged the assassin from the glowing crimson pot, pulled the false seals from the forty jars of mud, and stripped the purple linen from Bar-Zik, finding fifty-two ingots of base pewter that had been washed with gold leaf to deceive the royal treasury.

When the High King came down from his summer palace to see the great capture, he was dressed in feathers of the scarlet ibis and held the gold whip of twelve thongs. He looked upon the piles of recovered copper and the forty jars of river-silt, and he said to Piruz: “You have preserved the royal storehouse from the rot and the knife. Take off your ragged nettle-cloth and sit upon my right hand. You shall be the Great Overseer of the Seven Gates, and you shall have three hundred girls to fan your head with ostrich plumes, and forty oxen roasted in honey every new moon.”

Piruz-the-Squint took the electrum chain from behind his ear, held the teardrop lens in his palm, and looked up at the High King with his clouded left eye.

“Lord of the Dishes,” Piruz said softly, “if I sit upon your right hand and eat the roasted oxen, who will sit upon the cracked millstone to smell the oil-pots? The man who eats the king’s honey soon begins to see the king’s lead as silver, and his left eye will grow as blind as his right. The balance does not sit upon a high throne; it sits in the dirt where the donkeys stumble.”

Piruz refused the feathers of the ibis and the three hundred girls. He took only three measures of dried barley, a jar of sharp pomegranate vinegar to wash the dust from his glass, and a fresh roll of tamarisk sticks. He returned to his broken stone by the reed-gate, where he sat for forty-and-four years until his beard was white as the salt-waste.

No merchant ever again brought a jar of silt into the gate of Shur-of-the-Scales without paying the full three grains of copper for the toll; for every water-carrier knew that even if the night were dark and the lanterns had burned out their oil, the one-eyed man with the amber glass could see through the bottom of the wooden barrel and count the crooked pennies in the heel of a smuggler’s sandal.

When Piruz died, the artisans of the city did not bury his loupe with his bones; they broke the electrum frame into forty-and-eight pieces and melted them into the rim of the great municipal measuring-bowl, so that whenever a citizen bought a pot of flour at the public market, the bowl would ring with a clear, sharp tone if the seller had mixed the meal with the white dust of the chalk-hills.

Moral of the Story: The sword of the hero may drive away the robber who comes with shouting and fire; but it is the cold, unblinking eye of the honest measurer that keeps the kingdom alive, long after the shouting has ended and the banners of the kings have rotted in the rain.
