- Lore: During the wilderness reclamation following the arrival of the First People across the island continents, relics of ancient dimensional provenance began emerging from dried riverbeds and petrified groves. Legend states that early nomadic sorcerers who retained the esoteric rituals of old Persia invoked the celestial guardian Simurgh to shield fragile mortal bodies against the violent, wild magic of Saṃsāra. By calling upon the primordial balance of Asha—the cosmic order of truth and radiance—these sorcerers sought to arrest the flow of decay and elemental disruption. Rather than allowing wild forces to shred physical flesh, their rituals drew upon the mineral essence of ambient ley lines, allowing practitioners to freeze instability into pure, transparent crystal. Persian 487 of the Simurgh’s Vitrified Talon represents one of the surviving focus artifacts forged through these ancient rites, transmuting organic fluids and ambient humidity into defensive crystalline barriers to keep newly arrived avatars whole against the savage moon’s hazards.
- Description: This implement is a six-inch curved focal talon sculpted from a singular shard of translucent, rose-tinted desert quartz, encased in fine filigree of electrum and woven camel-hair cordage. The base of the spike is set into a contoured bronze setting inscribed with ancient cuneiform sigils signifying light, preservation, and solid earth. When gripped or channeled, the quartz glows with an internal, amber-hued luminescence that pulses steadily in rhythm with the avatar’s breathing. The surface of the stone feels surprisingly cold to the touch, and tiny facets along its edge catch natural light to project minute, sharp prismatic rays across nearby surfaces. When magical currents are directed through the talon, a soft, high-pitched ringing sound resonates from the tip, accompanied by the scent of ozone and sun-baked desert sand, causing nearby moisture to rapidly solidify into delicate, geometric frost patterns.
- Detailed Stats:
- Item Rank: Common (Tier 1)
- Resilience: 10
- Item Hit Points: Avatar Maximum Hit Points plus 10 (Derived from Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
- Armor Check (AC): +1 AC bonus (within the maximum limit of 3 AC per item level)
- Weight: 1 pound
- Attunement Requirements: Simple attunement taking a minimum of 1 full minute of focus, or instant attunement when held directly in an active hand slot.
- Durability Mechanics: If the item suffers damage equal to half its HP or less, it becomes broken and its magical functions cease until fully repaired. If reduced to 0 HP, it shatters into its original component parts, leaving behind raw quartz fragments and electrum wire. Taking a hit while unattuned requires the attacker to roll direct damage against its HP pool.
- Slot: Hand Slot (Right or Left)
- Passive Magics:
- Asha’s Glazed Carapace: While held and attuned, the ambient humidity and surface sweat surrounding the avatar form a microscopic, glassy film over exposed gear and skin. This grants a constant +1 bonus to the avatar’s Armor Check, reinforcing the body against mundane glancing impacts.
- Vitrified Coagulation: Whenever the avatar is afflicted with the Bleeding condition, the open wound immediately hardens into a thin scab of brittle, rose quartz crystals. The avatar gains immediate resistance against the ongoing bleed damage, reducing recurring physical bleeding effects while keeping the wound structurally sealed until normal healing can be administered.
- Resonant Mineral Tether: The crystalline structure within the talon passively aligns with the natural crystalline cells within the avatar’s body. The avatar receives a +2 bonus to any skill checks made to resist physical displacement, forced knockbacks, or being knocked Prone, as the avatar’s footing temporarily densifies and locks like rooted stone to the earth.
- Activable Magics:
- Vitrifying Ward: As an action, the avatar recites a short Persian verse of warding, pointing the talon at a five-foot section of mundane ground, doorway, or container within 20 feet. The targeted surface instantly flash-freezes into a brittle sheet of solid crystalline glass. If used on a door or chest, its break DC is modified by the Saṃsāra Tier 1 modifier, locking or reinforcing the barrier with an additional 10 temporary HP. This crystal shell lasts for 10 minutes before fracturing back into mundane dust.
- Crystalline Needle Jet: As an action, the avatar directs the tip of the talon at a single foe within a simple range of 30 feet, spending an attack action. The talon condenses ambient air moisture and projects a high-velocity dart of solid quartz. The attack uses a standard Tier 1 roll to hit: 1d20 + 1d4 tier die + the avatar’s relevant attack modifiers. If the total exceeds the target’s AC, the dart strikes for 1d6 piercing damage plus the 1d4 tier die result passed through from the hit roll. The impact causes tiny mineral spikes to burst outward from the point of impact, inflicting the Hindered condition upon the target’s next movement action as quartz shards encrust their joints.
- Amuletic Preservation Ritual: By engaging in a Somatic chant lasting less than 6 seconds and consuming an action, the wielder strikes the base of the talon against an attuned weapon or mundane tool. A protective sheen of amber crystal coats the struck object for 1 hour. While encapsulated, the object gains immunity to environmental rust, acid corrosion, and matrix degradation. If the item takes direct damage, the crystalline coating absorbs up to 5 points of damage before shattering harmlessly, leaving the underlying item pristine.

Commerce and Trade Venues for Persian 487 of the Simurgh’s Vitrified Talon
- Mom-and-Pop Arcane Lapidaries:
- Venue Type and Setting: Small, family-run artisan workshops located in residential quarters or quiet side alleys of walled cities like Banpo or Aterian. These establishments are operated by single lineages of gem-cutters and enchanters who lease the workspace directly from the local municipal government. The shopfront typically consists of a narrow counter with manual glass display cases, grinding wheels turned by foot pedals or localized steam belts, and a back room where family members conduct delicate lapidary crafting.
- Acquisition Method: Avatars browse directly at the counter, examining physical inventory under the owner’s close watch. The wielder can inspect the item’s fundamental properties through the passive activation of their Mind’s Eye to confirm the tier-1 common rating, base stats, and craftsmanship lineage tags etched into the electrum setting.
- Buying Cost: The standard base retail asking price in a typical island market is 50 silver coins (equivalent to 5 gold coins), representing the typical value for a tier-1 common magic focus. Non-affiliated buyers pay the full price of 50 silver. If the purchasing avatar holds active membership in the local Crafting Guild or Lapidary Faction and displays their badge openly, they receive a 10% discount per character tier level. For a tier 1 avatar, this equates to a 10% discount (5 silver deduction), bringing the final cost down to 45 silver.
- Selling Protocol and Haggling: When an avatar brings the talon to an independent shopkeeper to sell, the merchant does not pay full retail value. The merchant haggles around a 10% reduction per character tier level against the standard base assessment. For a tier 1 avatar, the merchant offers 45 silver. If the sale is finalized, the merchant records a quasi-log entry noting the transaction and the avatar’s apparent identity, and the transaction funds are wired directly into the character’s World Bank account via commercial bank ledger transfer. The vendor retains the full right to decline the purchase entirely if their operational ledger is low on funds or if they do not handle foreign esoteric implements.
- Guildhall Consignment Exchanges:
- Venue Type and Setting: The central trade floor within an officially recognized City Guildhall, supervised by an appointed military administrator or senior Guild Master. These facilities operate in settlements exceeding five thousand permanent residents, functioning as structured trading clearinghouses for certified adventurers, artisans, and contractors rather than commercial general stores.
- Acquisition Method: Items are registered in written physical requisition logs kept behind iron-grated service windows. The item is held in secured municipal storage lockers until retrieved for physical inspection. Potential buyers must present valid guild identification to browse the high-demand focus shelves.
- Buying Cost: The baseline valuation remains pegged at 50 silver coins. Guild members in good standing who openly display their guild crest receive the baseline 10% tier discount, purchasing the item for 45 silver coins. Non-members who gain temporary entry permits or guest access must pay the full 50 silver without exception.
- Selling Protocol and Haggling: The guild clearinghouse applies standardized merchant haggling formulas, reducing their payout to 45 silver for a tier 1 seller. Payouts are deposited directly into the seller’s World Bank account, where the balance reflects instantly in the character’s Mind’s Eye. Guildmasters maintain precise records of all cataloged gear, making guild transactions completely traceable by local royal assessors and city magistrates.
- Shadow Bazaars and Black-Market Dens:
- Venue Type and Setting: Hidden basement dens, abandoned sewer tunnels, or clandestine backrooms of coastal tavern warehouses in port cities. These operations avoid official tax collection checkpoints, royal court inspectors, and city gate guards.
- Acquisition Method: Transactions occur through whispered negotiations with illicit brokers, fence bosses, or rogue adventuring syndicates. No questions are asked regarding the item’s provenance, previous owners, or whether the artifact was recovered from a fallen avatar’s vaporized remains.
- Buying Cost: Black-market dealers demand full value or higher due to the risks of illicit trade. The talon commands a mandatory price of 50 silver to 75 silver, and standard guild discounts do not apply under any circumstances. Furthermore, black-market merchants flatly refuse World Bank account transfers to avoid divine financial surveillance; all purchases must be paid in physical gold or silver coinage counted out by hand.
- Selling Protocol and Haggling: Selling the talon to a black-market fence yields between 45 silver (matching standard merchant rates) up to 90 silver (nearly double standard payout) if the broker has an immediate private buyer seeking an untraceable crystalline weapon focus. The seller receives physical coin directly into their hands, maintaining total anonymity with zero transaction records or official scrutiny.
- Inter-State Frontier Caravans and Coastal Wharfs:
- Venue Type and Setting: Open-air covered wagon stalls operating along military-patrolled roadways connecting coastal port cities to central capital metropolises, or direct merchant vessel docks along island wharfs.
- Acquisition Method: Traded directly from traveling pack wagons or dry-docked trade galleys that transport goods across the 73 island continents. Availability is highly unstable; an item common in an arid region or near ancient ruins may be virtually non-existent in distant archipelagoes.
- Buying Cost: Because pricing on Saṃsāra operates strictly under a seller’s market governed by the principle of “buyer beware,” access and geographical scarcity drastically alter the final cost. In regions where Persian magical focuses are scarce, traveling wagon masters routinely mark up the talon to 80 silver or even 10 gold coins. In coastal port districts, incoming goods are subjected to local tariffs: crossing a state border levies a 5% value tax, entering a central city adds a 1% transit fee, and bringing the item through a city gate or seaport requires an additional 1 silver entry fee per individual, all of which are passed directly onto the buyer.
- Selling Protocol and Haggling: Itinerant caravan masters calculate purchases based on their immediate travel route and local supply. A caravan heading toward territories where mineral focuses are rare will offer up to 50 silver, whereas merchants entering areas saturated with magical crystals may offer as little as 35 to 40 silver. All legal caravan settlements process transactions through the World Bank system, deducting the mandatory 1% bank fee rounded up to the nearest copper upon deposit.
Environmental Tactical Applications and Roleplay for Persian 487 of the Simurgh’s Vitrified Talon
- Subterranean Caverns and Dark Mine Shafts:
- Offensive Roleplay: Deep beneath the island crust, where darkness blankets the damp stone passages, the avatar grips the talon with an active hand slot to initiate the Crystalline Needle Jet. Pointing the sharp quartz tip down a narrow shaft at an approaching cave-dwelling monster, the wielder mutters an ancient Persian verse of piercing clarity. The ambient moisture dripping from stalactites condenses into a jagged, rose-colored quartz dart that shrieks through the tunnel. Upon impact, the brittle projectile shatters violently against the creature’s hide, dealing piercing damage augmented by the passed-through tier die. As the monster recoils, crystalline spikes rapidly grow outward from the entry wound, encrusting its joints and triggering the Hindered condition, which arrests its charge and leaves it struggling to navigate the narrow passage.
- Defensive Roleplay: When ambushed by burrowing monstrosities, the avatar engages the Vitrifying Ward. Driving the bronze butt of the implement into the cave floor or across a structural chokepoint, a ring of pale quartz crystals rapidly crawls across the rock, turning loose shale into a seamless, vitrified wall of mineral glass. This reinforced crystalline barrier provides temporary structural hit points that absorb brute physical blows from claws and mandibles. Simultaneously, the passive Resonant Mineral Tether links the talon’s quartz lattice to the magical crystalline cells within the avatar’s body, granting a solid, unyielding stance that prevents burrowing tremors or subterranean shockwaves from knocking the avatar Prone.
- Arid Deserts and Wasteland Salt Flats:
- Offensive Roleplay: Across scorched, open plains where heat ripples distort the horizon, loose sand provides abundant mineral grit. The avatar levels the talon toward a hostile marauder, channeling arcane currents from an attuned battery or inner focus. Using the Crystalline Needle Jet, the wielder draws upon the airborne dust and sparse mineral salts, fusing them into a needle-like crystalline spike that whistles through the arid air. Striking true against the target’s armor check, the shard pierces through mundane leather or cloth, releasing a burst of micro-crystals that fuse into the adversary’s limbs, immediately compromising their footwork and imposing movement penalties under the harsh glare of Helios.
- Defensive Roleplay: In barren desert winds where abrasive sandstorms inflict continuous wear on metal and gear, the avatar invokes the Amuletic Preservation Ritual. Chanting a Somatic incantation under six seconds, the wielder strikes the talon across their primary weapon or shield. A glassy, amber-hued crystalline film spreads across the surface, sealing seams and edges. This barrier protects the gear against atmospheric scouring, rust, and matrix degradation while absorbing incoming impacts up to its threshold. If an enemy blade manages to slash open the avatar’s flesh, the passive Vitrified Coagulation immediately hardens the flowing blood into an amber-quartz scab, mitigating recurring Bleeding damage and keeping the avatar upright in prolonged engagements.
- High-Altitude Cloud Cities and Sky Platforms:
- Offensive Roleplay: Suspended thousands of feet above the land where cold drafts sweep through airship docks and floating mage towers, atmospheric moisture is dense and easily manipulated. Leaning into the wind, the avatar aligns the talon with a soaring aerial beast or airborne raider. The ambient humidity of the surrounding cloud deck flash-freezes along the quartz facets, firing a barrage of razor-sharp vitreous darts via the Crystalline Needle Jet. The sudden emergence of crystal weights on the target’s wings or harnesses unbalances their flight trajectory, leaving them Hindered and struggling to maintain lift amid the high winds.
- Defensive Roleplay: Standing on narrow wooden gantries or suspended bridges between towers, a sudden blast from an airship cannon or gale-force wind risks blowing avatars over the edge. By holding the talon, the wielder benefits from the passive Asha’s Glazed Carapace, which uses the freezing mist to form a hard, transparent shell over clothes and armor that deflects shrapnel and grazing strikes. Concurrently, the Resonant Mineral Tether locks the avatar’s center of gravity to the gantry floor, countering violent gusts or shockwaves that would otherwise send the avatar plummeting from the floating city.
- Coastal Wharfs, Sea Decks, and Reef Environments:
- Offensive Roleplay: Amid the salt spray of a pitching trade galley or rocky coastal reef, seawater provides limitless fuel for crystallization. Confronting sea raiders or aquatic beasts breaching the ship’s rail, the avatar speaks the true lineage etched upon the talon’s electrum setting. The Crystalline Needle Jet rapidly draws brine from the air and spray, crystallizing salt and water into a hyper-dense dart that punctures hide or timber. The secondary burst leaves heavy, coarse mineral deposits embedded in the foe’s gills or appendages, severely impeding their maneuverability across slippery deck boards.
- Defensive Roleplay: When boarding hooks pierce the bulwark or an enemy strike shatters an avatar’s defensive line, the wielder triggers the Vitrifying Ward along the wooden hatchway or deck breach. A translucent, glass-hard crust spreads over the doorway, barring enemy entry with a resilient quartz barrier that must be forcefully smashed before foes can advance. If boarders land a vicious slashing blow on the avatar, Vitrified Coagulation instantly seals the wound with hardened crystalline salt crusts, preventing blood from slicking the deck while eliminating the debilitating penalties of the Bleeding condition during active shipboard combat.

Perception of Activation:
- Visual Perception:
- User’s Perspective: Looking down at the talon in your grip, the pale rose quartz ignites from within with a radiant, golden-amber luminescence. Fractures inside the stone catch the internal blaze, casting kaleidoscopic refractions across your fingers and forearm. Razor-thin crystalline needles flash into existence along the stone’s carved edges, extending outward like fine ice ferns. Beyond the weapon, your vision sharpens as a faint geometric lattice overlays your surroundings, highlighting microscopic fissures in nearby rock, moisture sheens on cobblestones, and the structural density of physical barriers.
- Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers see the curved talon flare with a bright, incandescent glow that silhouettes the user’s hand. Translucent geometric shards appear to hover and spin around the crystal blade before snapping into rigid alignment. Sunlight or ambient light bends around the user’s silhouette, creating a prismatic aura that flickers with golden and pale violet halos. If an ability like Vitrifying Ward is triggered, observers watch a spreading wave of glassy frost race across the ground, instantly hardening loose soil or stone into an amber-tinted pane.
- Positives: The bright flash illuminates completely dark spaces within a twenty-foot radius, negating penalties associated with dim light and exposing structural weak points or micro-cracks in targeted barriers.
- Negatives: The intense radiant discharge makes covert or stealthy activation impossible in low-light environments, immediately drawing the gaze of all nearby hostile combatants.
- Auditory Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The moment your intent channels into the electrum filigree, a pure, harmonic chime rings directly inside your skull, closely resembling the resonance of struck crystal stemware. This tone rapidly ascends in pitch, accompanied by a dry, rhythmic hiss akin to wind-whipped sand scouring across a desert plain. When a crystalline projectile launches or a ward takes hold, you hear a sharp, clean crack, like thick river ice snapping under sudden pressure.
- Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders hear a high-pitched, metallic hum emanating from the bronze and electrum fittings. When the talon strikes or discharges, a sharp, echoing snap reverberates through the area, followed by the crystalline tinkle of falling mineral dust. Nearby surfaces that undergo rapid crystallization emit continuous, faint clicking sounds as microscopic facets lock together.
- Positives: The clean chime provides the wielder with clear auditory confirmation of a completed circuit and stable spell channel, while the sudden crack of discharging quartz can disorient animals or distract unarmored targets.
- Negatives: The piercing frequency carries over long distances down enclosed stone tunnels or across open water, alerting alert sentries and guards far beyond your visual range.
- Tactile Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The bronze grip remains reassuringly warm, but the moment activation occurs, the rose quartz tip plummets in temperature until it feels like dense glacial ice. An invigorating, static vibration pulses through the palm of your hand, sending tingling waves up your forearm. Where the passive vitrification coats your skin, the surface feels taut, dry, and exceptionally slick, like touching polished marble or freshly blown glass, without impeding joint flexibility.
- Observer’s Perspective: Targets struck by the talon or its needle jet feel an instantaneous, biting chill at the point of impact, followed by a stiffening tightness as minerals bind to their hide, scales, or clothing. Bystanders who touch an affected barrier or surface feel an unnatural, stone-cold rigidity that resists fingernails, blades, and moisture.
- Positives: The smooth, glass-like coating drastically reduces surface friction, making the user harder to grapple or bind, while stabilizing the wielder’s grip on the weapon.
- Negatives: Prolonged activation leaves the user’s fingers numb from the localized drop in temperature, slightly reducing fine manual dexterity for intricate non-combat tasks while active.
- Olfactory Perception:
- User’s Perspective: As the magic circulates, the immediate air fills with the crisp, dry aroma of sun-baked desert sand mixed with an unmistakable trace of ozone, reminiscent of an approaching electrical storm. Any stagnant or damp smells in the immediate vicinity are instantly overridden by this sterile, mineral freshness.
- Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within ten feet notices a sudden dry draft carrying the scent of crushed limestone, hot flint, and parched earth, as if a doorway to an arid gorge had momentarily opened in the middle of the room.
- Positives: The sharp, arid scent cuts through toxic vapors, swamp miasmas, and foul sewer stenches, clearing the avatar’s sinuses and easing focused respiration.
- Negatives: The sudden, out-of-place desert smell serves as an obvious sensory trail for tracking beasts possessing scent-based perception.
- Gustatory Perception:
- User’s Perspective: A faint, dry, mineral taste coats the back of your tongue the instant the crystal activates. It tastes of powdered chalk, dry salt, and metallic electrum, causing a momentary dryness in the throat that demands an extra swallow of water from a waterskin after prolonged spellcasting.
- Observer’s Perspective: Nearby individuals who inhale the pulverized crystal spray during an impact experience an astringent, powdery taste of pulverized rock and alkaline dust on their lips and teeth.
- Positives: The dry, alkaline taste dulls the wielder’s perception of nauseating, foul-tasting airborne spores or putrid matter.
- Negatives: The rapid drying effect prompts immediate thirst, requiring the avatar to consume rations of water sooner during extended maneuvers.
- Extra-Sensory and Metaphysical Perception:
- User’s Perspective:
- Mind’s Eye Resonance: Through the internal perception of the Mind’s Eye, the talon flares into focus as a pulsing geometric nexus. You perceive the exact stress tolerances and remaining hit points of the weapon rendered as luminous amber numerals hovering in your mental awareness.
- Soul and Matrix Alignment: A distinct sensation of mineral crystallization anchors your possessing consciousness to the avatar’s physical vessels. The inner turbulence of wandering thoughts smooths out into rigid, orderly planes of logic, subduing momentary panic or disorientation caused by fragmented past-life memories.
- Weave Tension: You feel the surrounding threads of ambient magic snap tight like pulled strings. Magic does not flow fluidly around you; instead, it catches on the quartz facets, behaving like an orderly, stepped cascade of kinetic energy.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- True Sight and Arcane Detection: Observers utilizing True Sight see the talon erupt in brilliant, deep ultraviolet luminescence that outshines mundane light sources, surrounded by rigid geometric diagrams that trace ancient Persian protective wards.
- Soul Sight Perception: Observers viewing the target with Soul Sight notice the avatar’s spiritual outline stabilize, as loose spirit tendrils are pulled inward and encased in a solid, rose-gold shell that shields the core self from ethereal contamination.
- Aura of Order: Sensitive spellcasters and natural beasts in the area register an uncanny feeling of absolute stillness—a sudden suppression of chaotic magical static that feels both majestic and unnaturally rigid.
- Positives: The metaphysical rigidity completely insulates the avatar against chaotic mental interference, providing mental clarity and reinforcing the wielder against involuntary astral shifts or spiritual disorientation.
- Negatives: The sheer concentration of structured arcane energy creates a distinct metaphysical beacon in the weave, allowing entities sensitive to mana flow to pinpoint the activation across significant distances.
- User’s Perspective:

- Skill Requirements:
- Jewelcrafting / Lapidary: Minimum Skill Level 2 (trained).
- Runecarving / Inscription: Minimum Skill Level 2 (trained), with specialized knowledge in ancient planar cuneiform scripts.
- Alchemical Crafting: Minimum Skill Level 1 (trained) for reagent stabilization and biological fluid extraction.
- Mind’s Eye Proficiency: Required to accurately read the structural resilience, align the crystal’s magical frequencies, and verify the successful transfer of enchantment during forging.
- Crafting Steps:
- Step 1: Preparing and Extracting the Organic Reagents:
- Using the fluid collector, draw two drams of alkaline bog water and blend it with the resinous acacia sap inside a sealed glass vial.
- Warm the mixture over the arcane brazier until it reaches a clear, syrup-like consistency, then set it aside at a stable temperature away from direct sunlight.
- Step 2: Shaping and Faceting the Mineral Core:
- Secure the raw rose quartz shard onto the workbench and inspect its natural grain lines using the Mind’s Eye to identify structural fracture planes.
- Carefully chip away excess bulk using the lapidary chisel, tapering the piece into a curved six-inch talon with six prominent longitudinal facets.
- Smooth and buff all exterior faces with the fine files, ensuring the apex terminates in a needle-sharp point while leaving the basal socket rough to maximize mechanical grip.
- Step 3: Casting and Inscribing the Housing:
- Melt the bronze ingot inside the brazier crucible and pour it into a small flared socket mold designed to cradle the base of the talon.
- Once cooled, mount the bronze collar and use the engraving stylus to score the outer rim with ancient Persian cuneiform sigils corresponding to light, truth, and enduring earth.
- Cut matching spiral guide grooves down the exterior sleeve of the hilt to accommodate the braided camel-hair cord wrap.
- Step 4: Incorporating the Catalyst and Sacrificial Focus:
- Position the Tier-1 magic crystal into the deep seat of the bronze collar, ensuring it rests flush against the base of the shaped quartz spike.
- Place the sacrificial stone dagger into the crucible alongside the electrum wire, invoking the proper transmutation ritual to dissolve the mundane weapon.
- As the sacrificial blade breaks down, channel its structural properties into the liquid electrum, then draw the molten alloy into fine, magically charged wire filigree.
- Wrap the warm electrum filigree tightly around the base of the quartz talon and through the bronze sleeve, binding the magic crystal catalyst directly into the physical assembly.
- Step 5: Sealing and Attuning the Focus:
- Inject the warm alchemical sap mixture into all open seams between the quartz, bronze socket, and electrum wire using the fluid collector, creating an airtight, shock-absorbing seal.
- Tightly wind the braided camel-hair cord around the bronze grip, tucking the terminal ends under the electrum bands to lock the hilt assembly together.
- Hold the completed implement over the brazier’s residual heat and perform a continuous Somatic chant lasting less than 6 seconds to awaken the internal flow.
- Examine the finished focus through the Mind’s Eye: the item successfully resolves when the internal crystal flares amber, confirming Tier-1 common status, Resilience 10, and active resonance with the ambient moisture of the air.
- Step 1: Preparing and Extracting the Organic Reagents:
Glass-Claw of High Sky-Hen and Clay Prince Who Refused to Melt
In the day before the day that numbers were tied to years, when the great wet dirt had not yet turned into seventy-and-three dry plates upon the water, there was a man of small mud whose name was spoken like the noise of dry wind in barley, though in the writing of the old clay it is written only as Arsh-of-the-Brine. This man had two feet that walked, but he had inside his chest no fire of red sparks, only a heavy lump of cold grease that did not burn when the gods looked down with their round eye Helios, which was not then called by that tongue. The high mother of the round ground, she whose stomach is the earth and whose hair is the smoke of the burning craters, was playing with birds that had the ribs of lizards and lions that grew the skin of river-fish. Among these walking errors was the Great Hen of the Far Salt Mountain, whose true feather was gold and whose left foot had four nails, but the small fifth nail behind was of clear rock that had sucked the fat out of the moon.
Arsh-of-the-Brine was not a hero who had died in the other worlds of the great sky-well; he was a walking lump that had come out of the river weeds before the First People fell through the smoke. His town was not a town of five thousand stones, so there was no Master of Guilds to measure his bread, and the King-Woman of the high house had not yet sent her runners with copper sticks to take the one-tenth of his grain. Yet in the village where he dug for white salt, there came every forty suns the Crawling Worm of Seven Spits, which was an elephant whose skin was made of red leeches and whose nose could smell a sleeping baby through twelve inches of wet cedar. When this beast walked through the ditches, the small men became soup, and the houses of dried grass fell down into the muck, because the red slime from the beast made all stones become as soft as sheep-belly.
The man Arsh said with his tongue to the three uncles who sat in the smoke-hole: “If we give our daughters to the mud, our hands will be empty when we grow old and the white hair grows out of our ears. I will go up to the high nest where the great Simurgh-bird cleans her claws upon the bone of the star.” The uncles struck him with bent olive-sticks and said: “Your grandfather was a digger of leeches, and his grandfather had no eyes because of the swamp-gnats. Why do you look toward the cloud-rim where the air has no meat to chew?” But Arsh did not listen, because the grease in his breast had begun to turn into dry sand, and he had wrapped his loin with the hard wool of a two-humped beast that had died of thirst.
For three hundred turns of the water-wheel he climbed the sharp hill where the sky touches the stone. On that mountain the wind does not blow like wind below; it blows sideways like a thrown knife, and the water does not run down, but climbs the rocks in small green worms of ice. There he saw the great Bird of Light, whose wings were so wide that when she shook her feathers, darkness fell over three valleys, and the small stars in the black above blinked like sheep-eyes in the dark pen. The Bird looked at Arsh with one eye that was yellow like melting butter and one eye that was blue like the bottom of a well. The Bird said, in a tongue that sounded like two millstones grinding parched lentils: “Why does the mud-beetle climb to the place where only the fire-born eat the clouds?”
Arsh did not have the good speech of the scribes who write upon soft reeds with split bones, so he laid upon the stone three dead beetles, a piece of dry mutton fat, and his sister’s hair-pin made of poor electrum wire. He said: “The red leech-elephant eats the legs of our children, and the mud where we stand turns to red water. Give me your small tooth so I may poke the beast before my blood is drunk.”
The Great Bird laughed, and her laughter made the loose stones roll down into the ocean for fourteen miles around. “The things of the dirt must be soft so that the worms have bread,” the Bird replied through her curved nose. “If the mud does not melt, how shall the grass find a place to put its toes? But you have brought the hair-pin of the woman who does not know me, and the electrum is mixed with the silver of the ditch.” Then the Great Bird reached back with her iron beak and tore from her left hind-toe the fifth nail, which was pink like the belly of a young pig and clear like the water of the spring before the cattle trample the moss. When she dropped it upon the rock, it did not make the sound of metal, but the sound of an earthen jar cracking upon the hearth.
“Take the claw,” the Bird screeched, and her breath smelled of burned cedar-berries and old lightning. “It will not cut the meat of the bull, and it will not dig the ditch for your leeks. But whatever has water in it shall remember the bone from which it was stolen, and the water shall become like the salt-blocks of the great desert.”
Arsh took the pink stone, and because it was sharp and bit his palm, he wrapped the base of it with the wool of his camel-belt and tied it with the electrum wire of his sister’s pin. As he went down the goat-paths, he became thirsty, for the stone in his fist drank the sweat from his skin until his fingers were as dry as old parchment left in the sun behind the granary. When he reached down to dip his hand into the mountain brook, the water where the pink claw pointed stopped running; it did not freeze as winter ice freezes, but it became like clear sugar-loaves, hard and dry, so that the small fishes were caught inside the stones like bugs in dried pine-tears, unable to wiggle their tails.
When Arsh came again to the ditch of his people, the Crawling Worm of Seven Spits was already standing in the cabbage-patch. Its seven snouts were blowing red mist onto the roof of the headman’s barn, and the mud under the village was turning into red porridge that smelled of rotten eggs and dead dogs. The men were weeping into their pots, and the women were throwing their bronze armlets into the well to buy peace from the spirits of the mud.
Arsh did not run, because his sandals were full of sharp sand. He stood upon the low wall where the goats are milked and shouted the seven bad words that the camel-drivers use when their beasts drop in the salt-pan. The Great Leech-Elephant turned its big red forehead toward him, and its skin began to weep three tubs of red venom that would make a man’s shins melt down to the white bone in sixty heart-beats. The beast charged with the weight of forty loaded timber-barges, and the ground under its pads turned to soft soup.
Arsh held out the talon of the Simurgh with both fists, leaning his belly against the bronze sleeve he had found in the blacksmith’s cinder-pile. He did not say a prayer to the high queen who sleeps in the middle of the moon, for he did not know her names, nor did he chant the long verses of the water-priests. He merely shouted the true name of his first dead dog, which was “Kur,” for the dog had possessed a hard head and had never moved from the doorway even when the mule kicked it.
The pink stone did not roar like thunder; it whistled like a dry reed when the east wind rises before the dust-storm. A thin needle of bright rose light shot from the tip, no thicker than an onion-sprout, and struck the red beast between its two small wet eyes. In the space of one breath, the red slime that was pouring from its nose ceased to flow. The beast took one more step, but its front legs did not bend; they made the sound of dry tiles being broken with a mallet. The red skin, which had been as soft as boiled tripe, became hard and cloudy like the pink gypsum that the quarry-men dig out of the dry cliffs. The seven snouts turned white, then pink, then clear like the glass bottles that the sea-merchants bring from the western islands.
The beast tried to scream, but the air inside its throat had turned into long needles of spar. It stood there in the middle of the onions, an elephant made entirely of clear salt-stone, through which the villagers could see the sun shining on the other side. When the small boys of the town threw dried mud-clods at its belly, the clods did not stick; they bounced off with a loud clatter, like pebbles hitting the stone rampart of a high king’s fortress.
The villagers came out of their holes, but they did not give Arsh a fat sheep, nor did they place upon his head the woven cap of an elder. Instead, the headman looked upon the big glass elephant and said: “This fool has brought a thing that will ruin the trade of our ditch. If the ground does not turn to soft mud, how shall we dig the red clay for our pots? If the water becomes like glass when he points his thumb, the ducks will have no grubs to eat, and our nets will catch only dried gravel.”
The three uncles who had beaten Arsh with the olive-twigs crept behind him while he was drinking small beer from a wooden bowl. They intended to take the pink claw from his hand and throw it into the deep bog where the leeches are thickest, so that the world might remain wet and soft as it had always been since the First People woke with their heads full of smoke. But as the eldest uncle laid his wet palm upon Arsh’s shoulder, the talon, which was still hot with the memory of the great bird’s sky-fire, took the moisture out of the uncle’s fat fingers. Before the old man could cry out to his mother, his hand had turned into a bunch of five white quartz radishes, stiff and brittle, so that when he struck his fist against the door-post in his fright, his middle finger broke off and fell into the ashes with the dry click of a clay marble.
Seeing this, the people of the salt-ditch took up their iron mattocks and drove Arsh into the stony scrub-country where only the thistles grow. They shouted after him: “Go and live among the dry rocks, you who turn the sweet grease of the world into glass that cannot be chewed!”
Arsh walked toward the lands of the setting Helios, where the ground was already dry and did not mind the sharpness of his tool. As he walked through the centuries, his own skin, which had drunk too much of the talon’s breath, ceased to grow hair and became like the glazed bricks that line the ovens of the royal city. He did not die when his years were full, for his blood had become like thick tree-gum that does not spoil, and when he slept, he did not dream of women or boiled goat-meat; he dreamed only of straight lines, flat surfaces, and the great white sky where the Simurgh cleans her claws upon the remnants of the stars.
It is recorded in the fourth roll of the King’s Library at Tayacian that many years later, a traveler found a bronze hilt lying among the parched gravel near the salt-wells, but the man who held it was gone, having dissolved into seven baskets of very fine, rose-colored grit that would not absorb the morning dew.
Moral of the Story: That which is soft and wet may rot in the ditch, but it can still grow the cabbage; while that which is turned to stone will never decay, yet neither the thirsty man nor the hungry sheep can find any milk upon the face of the jewel.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
Artifact of Asha: The Vitrified Claw of the Simurgh
- Classification: Arcane Relic / Persian Mythos Talisman
- Sanity Cost to Attune or Comprehend: 1D4 Sanity points upon deciphering the cuneiform script or experiencing its first activation.
- Powers and Mechanics:
- Vitrifying Needle (Attack Spell): Costs 4 Magic Points and 1 Sanity point. The investigator points the curved quartz talon at an entity within 10 yards and makes a DEX or Firearms (Improvised/Handgun) roll. If successful, an airborne crystalline dart impacts the target, dealing 1D6+1 damage. Additionally, the target must pass a CON roll or have mineral crystals rapidly crust over the wound, suffering a Penalty Die to all physical actions (DEX, STR, or movement-based rolls) on their subsequent turn.
- Preservative Glaze (Ward Spell): Costs 6 Magic Points. By tracing the talon across an inanimate portal, mundane object, or boundary (up to 5 square feet), the surface turns into rigid, vitreous crystal. This increases the object’s Armor value by +5 or raises the difficulty of STR rolls required to force the barrier open from Regular to Extreme. This effect lasts for 1 hour before disintegrating into dry sand.
- Crystalline Hemostasis (Passive): Whenever the wielder suffers an attack that inflicts a Major Wound involving continuous bleeding, the blood crystallizes into an amber scab. The investigator automatically succeeds on the immediate CON check to avoid continuing blood loss, though the physical hit point damage remains.
- Side Effects and Cosmic Resonance: Extensive handling causes the keeper’s skin to turn dry, pale, and chalky. If an investigator loses 5 or more Sanity points in a single day while carrying the talisman, they develop a temporary phobia of mud, standing water, and organic decay, driven by an obsessive fixation on absolute, geometric cleanliness.
Blades in the Dark
The Simurgh’s Vitrified Fang
- Item Type & Quality: Arcane Implement, Rare Artifact (Tier I Quality, 1 Load).
- Keywords: Arcane, Crystalline, Protective, Ancient.
- Rules and Mechanical Function:
- Vitrified Defense (Armor Trait): The wielder may mark 1 box of Armor (or Special Armor if an arcane playbook like the Whisper) to resist physical harm caused by slashing, bleeding, or environmental corrosion, narrating the impact deflecting off a flash-frozen crystalline skin barrier.
- Crystalline Needle (Action Enhancement): When you make an Attune or Skulk roll to strike an enemy from the shadows using ambient moisture, you can unleash a high-velocity shard of vitrified quartz. On a success (4/5 or 6), the attack has Standard or Great Effect, inflicting deep puncture trauma and freezing the target’s joints in rigid salt-crystals, reducing their mobility and reducing their threat level for following actions.
- Glass Ward (Pushing Yourself / Stress): You may spend 2 Stress to project a brittle, vitrified crust over an exit, door, safe, or container within your reach. This functions as a Tier III barrier against physical tampering or lockpicking for the duration of the score, but makes a loud, echoing chime if shattered by brute force.
- Devil’s Bargain / Complication: Using the artifact draws the attention of nearby ghosts or spirit wardens due to the abrupt crystallization of the local electroplasmic field. A common consequence involves the user’s fingers becoming partially numb and glassy, causing reduced effect on fine mechanical tasks for the rest of the operation.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition, 2024 Revision)
Simurgh’s Vitrified Talon
- Item Category: Wondrous Item (Rod / Focus)
- Rarity: Common
- Attunement: Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster
- Properties and Action Economy:
- Arcane Focus: While holding this talon, you can use it as a spellcasting focus for your spells.
- Asha’s Ward (Passive): While held and attuned, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class against mundane piercing and slashing damage, as a thin crystalline sheen forms over your clothing and skin.
- Crystalline Needle (Action): You target a creature you can see within 30 feet. Make a ranged spell attack using your spell attack modifier. On a hit, the target takes 1d6 piercing damage. If the attack roll succeeds by 5 or more, the target’s speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of your next turn as mineral frost encrusts their joints.
- Vitrifying Seal (Action, 1/Day): You touch an unworked stone or wooden surface, a mundane lock, or an open doorway no larger than 5 feet square. The surface calcifies into a solid sheet of rose-tinted quartz. The barrier has AC 13, 10 hit points, and immunity to poison and psychic damage. It remains for 10 minutes or until destroyed, after which it shatters into nonmagical dust. The item regains this use daily at dawn.
- Vitrified Hemostasis (Passive): You have Advantage on saving throws made to resist or end effects that cause continuous internal or external bleeding damage.
Knave (Second Edition)
The Vitrified Talon of Arsh
- Item Slots: Takes up 1 Item Slot (Carried/Hand).
- Durability: 3 Quality / 3 Item Hit Points.
- Rules and Mechanical Syntax:
- Armor Bonus: Provides +1 Armor while held in an active hand slot (subject to the standard maximum Armor cap of 20).
- Crystalline Dart (Ranged Attack): Uses 1 Action. Counts as a ranged weapon attack targeting an enemy within 40 feet. Make an attack roll adding your Wisdom or Intelligence bonus against the defender’s Armor rating. On a hit, it deals 1d6 damage. If the hit roll is an unmodified 20, the target’s legs crystalize, rendering them unable to move on their next turn until they make an opposed Strength check against DC 15 to break free.
- Seal Portal (Spell Effect): Once per day, the wielder may cast a ray against a mundane door, window, or chest within 30 feet. The portal is sealed with brittle quartz. Forcing it open requires a successful Strength check with Disadvantage, or dealing 10 physical damage to break the crystal pane (which makes a loud crash audible across the entire dungeon level).
- Coagulating Shard (Passive): If the wielder takes damage that reduces them to 0 Hit Points, the wound instantly vitrifies into a hard mineral scab. The character stabilizes immediately without rolling on the death or injury table, but the Talon suffers 1 point of Quality damage as the quartz fractures internally. When Quality reaches 0, the talisman shatters into useless gravel.
Fate Core
Vitrified Talon of the Simurgh
- Aspect: Relic of the Ancient Crystal-Bird
- Stunts:
- Vitrifying Shard: Because you brandish the Vitrified Talon of the Simurgh, you gain a +2 to Shoot when using ambient moisture to project high-velocity crystalline darts at targets up to one zone away.
- Asha’s Crystalline Sheen: When you actively defend against physical or slashing attacks using Physique or Athletics, a rapid sheet of brittle quartz coats your gear. On a tie or success, you may immediately create a temporary aspect of Encased in Glass or Glazed Armor with one free invoke.
- Crystalline Coagulation: Once per scene, when you take physical stress or suffer a minor physical consequence involving open wounds, you may clear your lowest marked physical stress box as the blood immediately hardens into an amber quartz scab.
- Trouble / Invoke Cost: Hostile entities may invoke the item’s aspect to compel consequences related to extreme bodily dehydration, stiffened joints, or unwanted attention from collectors seeking rare relics.
Numenera & Cypher System
The Simurgh’s Vitrification Focus
- Level: 3
- Form: A six-inch curved spike of rose quartz encased in electrum wire with a cast bronze handle.
- Kind: Cypher or Artifact (Depletion: 1 in 1d20 upon using active projection)
- Mechanics:

- Crystalline Dart (Action): The bearer expends 2 points from their Speed or Intellect pool to project a needle of condensed quartz at a target within short range. The attack functions as a Level 3 physical attack dealing 4 points of damage. On a success with a natural roll of 17 or higher, the target is encrusted in mineral frost, hindering all of their physical actions by one step for one round.
- Vitrified Seal (Action): The user touches a portal, container, or surface no larger than 2 meters across. The surface solidifies into a Level 4 crystalline barrier. The barrier absorbs up to 12 points of physical damage before breaking into brittle dust.

- Crystalline Needle (Minor Action + Major Action): The wielder spends a Minor Action to align mana through the electrum filigree and a Major Action to make an Astral Combat or Sorcery Attack Test at Near range (up to 10 meters). The talon condenses ambient moisture into a hyper-dense quartz dart. On a hit, the attack inflicts 4P damage (resisted by Body + Armor). If the net hits equal or exceed 2, the target suffers the Hobbled status effect for 1 combat round as mineral spurs solidify around their joints and augmentations.
- Vitrifying Ward (Complex Action): The wielder channels 2 points of Stun Drain (unresisted) to trace the bronze base across a doorway, window, or drone hatch up to two meters across. - Bulk: Light
- Usage: Held in 1 hand
- Traits: Magical, Transmutation, Tech-Hybrid, Consumable-Catalyst
- Item Statistics and Operational Syntax:
- Asha’s Crystalline Deflection (Passive): While drawn and held in an active hand, the talon grants a +1 item bonus to Kinetic Armor Class (KAC) against physical projectile, slashing, and piercing attacks as an electrostatic mineral film forms over the user’s flight suit or light armor.
- Crystalline Dart (Single Action — Attack, Range 30 feet): The wielder points the rose quartz apex at an enemy within 30 feet, making a ranged attack roll using their ranged attack modifier (Dexterity-based) or spell attack modifier. On a hit, it deals 1d6 piercing damage. On a critical hit, the target is encrusted in mineral frost and gains the Off-Guard condition until the end of their next turn.
- Vitrifying Seal (Two Actions — Concentrate, Manipulate): Once per day, the wielder touches a bulkhead seal, cargo latch, or viewport frame no larger than 5 feet square. The opening crystalizes into an amber-colored quartz pane with Hardness 3 and 12 Hit Points. This barrier holds structural pressure against vacuum or environmental toxins for 10 minutes before breaking into inert quartz sand.
- Coagulating Matrix (Passive): The wielder gains an item bonus of +2 to saving throws against environmental hazards and alien toxins that inflict continuous bleed damage or hemorrhagic effects.
Traveller (Mongoose Second Edition)
Ancient Pre-Collapse Vitrification Rod: The Simurgh Focus
- Item Type: Anomaly Relic / TL-15 Sub-Molecular Solidifier
- Mass: 0.5 kg

- Base Value: Cr 35,000 (Black Market / Archival Acquisition)
- System Characteristics and Rules Profile:
- Personal Defense Matrix (Passive): While wielded in a ready hand, the item projects a subtle molecular field that accelerates the density of outer garments. The user receives a +1 Armor bonus against physical ballistics, blades, and blast fragmentation. This bonus stacks with cloth, mesh, or vacc suit armor.
- Crystalline Needle Projector (Combat Action): Range 10 meters, Damage 2D-2 Piercing. The operator aims the device and rolls Gun Combat (Energy) or an untrained Dexterity check at DM-2. If the effect of the attack is +2 or higher, the target suffers a -1 DM penalty to all physical task checks on their next turn as microscopic quartz splinters foul joint seals and suit articulation.
- Structural Vitrification Field (Utility Action): The operator expends the device’s internal reserve to coat an airlock seal, breach, or doorway up to two meters square in an instant molecular glass bond. The sealed portal gains an effective Armor rating of 4 and requires 10 points of destructive damage or a successful Engineer (Structural) check at Formidable (14+) to breach. The crystallization field degrades into harmless dust after 100 combat rounds (10 minutes).
- Biological Seal (Passive): In the event of an open hull puncture or penetrating wound that causes internal hemorrhaging, the device flash-seals the biological tissue into a vitreous mineral plug. When rolling on the Medical Care or Trauma table, treating the patient’s wound receives a +2 DM, preventing catastrophic blood loss while pressurized inside hostile atmospheres.
