Lore
- Crafted during the early years of the Wilderness Conquest by order of the urban Magistracies across the island nation of Aterian, this ledger was commissioned to solve cold cases and bring criminals to justice when mortal witnesses were unavailable or deceased.
- In the urban centres of Saṃsāra, constables faced immense difficulties investigating slayings where perpetrators fled through crowded wharf districts or escaped via subterranean conduits, prompting guild artisans to forge iron-bound ledgers capable of anchoring departed spirits temporarily to the material plane for formal testimony.
- The device harnesses minor necromantic currents drawn from refined Tier 1 magic crystalline cells, allowing a sworn officer of the law to interrogate the lingering spiritual residue of the slain before the soul drifts into the sea of purgatory.
- While religious orders often object to unaligned souls being questioned, the Constitutional Monarchies maintain that communal safety and the lawful collection of trade tariffs and municipal fines supersede spiritual privacy during open judicial inquiries.
- Over centuries of use, duplicate patterns of this standard-issue investigative tool were cataloged across multiple island continents, making it a staple tool among guildhall enforcers, town constables, and state investigators seeking indisputable witness statements.
Description
- The item takes the physical form of a compact, rugged book bound between two cold-forged sheets of dull grey iron, clasped shut with a tarnished electrum latch shaped like an open eye.
- Its pages are crafted from thin, vellum-like parchment treated with alchemical fluids extracted from subterranean bog flora, rendering the leaves completely resistant to bloodstains, water, and ambient moisture.
- Along the spine of the iron binding sits a hollow glass vial containing a single Tier 1 magic crystalline cell, suspended in preserved amber fluid that faintly hums with pale violet light when held in the hand.
- Etched along the inner perimeter of each metal plate are microscopic runes of spiritual binding and transcription that glow softly when a deceased entity’s name or known alias is recorded upon the pages.
- A small stylus carved from petrified bone is secured along the edge in a leather holster, allowing the wielder to write or inscribe statements directly into the enchanted leaves during an active investigation.

Passives Magic
- Aura of the Inquest: When openly worn on the waist or held, the wielder gains a +1 temporary skill point to Investigation and Insight checks conducted during exploration and social encounters involving crime scenes, deceased bodies, or formal interrogation.
- Corpse Census: The ledger automatically registers the physical presence of any non-reincarnated deceased organism or slain monster corpse within a 30-foot radius, causing the electrum clasp to vibrate gently against the wielder’s side.
- Preserved Deposition: Any text, testimony, or physical evidence sketches inscribed upon the parchment pages cannot be erased, altered, or damaged by non-magical means, preserving the recorded testimony indefinitely until the wielder willingly turns the page.
Activable Magics
- Interrogate Residual Shade:
- Casting Type: Somatic (Normal chanting lasting less than 6 seconds with the bone stylus raised towards a corpse).
- Action Cost: 1 Action.
- Effect: The wielder targets the physical remains of a creature or humanoid that died within the last 24 hours within 30 feet. The ledger pulls forth a faint spiritual imprint of the deceased entity, compelling the lingering spirit to truthfully answer up to two questions regarding the identity of its killer, the manner of its demise, or the location of items it carried at the moment of death. The shade speaks in an audible whisper, and its exact words write themselves across the parchment. Once used on a corpse, that specific entity cannot be targeted again by this ledger.
- Spirit Shackle of the Magistrate:
- Casting Type: Somatic (Normal chanting lasting less than 6 seconds, pointing the iron ledger at a spectral or undead foe).
- Action Cost: 1 Action.
- Attack and Save: The wielder rolls a d20 + 1d4 (Tier 1 tier die) + attack bonuses against the target’s AC or Difficulty Class.
- Effect: On a successful hit, ethereal iron chains manifest from the pages of the ledger, imposing the Anchored condition upon the target undead spirit or spectral entity, restricting its movement to within 10 feet of the binding point for 1 minute. If the target attempts to break free, it must succeed on an opposed saving throw against the wielder’s roll or take 1d4 base necrotic damage.
- Rebuke the Unquiet:
- Casting Type: Ritual (Chanting, reciting formal legal statutes aloud for greater than 6 seconds).
- Action Cost: 2 Actions (Full Turn).
- Effect: The wielder recites the jurisdiction’s constitutional decree of death, projecting a burst of pale violet silver fire in a 15-foot cone originating from the open book. All hostile undead or feral scavengers within the area must make a Difficulty Class 11 saving throw. On a failed save, targets suffer 1d4 + 25% additional ritual damage (calculated as 1d4 + 1 base damage) of direct magical damage and gain the Frightened condition for 1 turn, retreating directly away from the constable.
Specific Slot
- Waist Slot (attached via standard belt strap or holster, counting as 1 worn item towards the avatar’s Tier 1 limit of 19 items)

Commerce and Acquisitions of the Inquest Ledger
- Authorized Guildhall Outfitter and Constabulary Quartermasters
- Located in large coastal and central capital cities with populations over five thousand, these government-sanctioned shops operate directly out of municipal administrative barracks or adjoining guildhalls under the supervision of appointed military officials and local guild masters.
- Avatars buying an iron ledger here must show proper credentials, proof of municipal employment, or an active town watch affiliation; transactions are formally logged into the city archives with buyer identity records transmitted to the World Bank.
- Purchase Cost: 100 to 120 silver (10 to 12 gold) for standard citizens, reduced by a 10% discount for guild members with matching investigative or law-enforcement standing, with an added 1 silver city gate tariff upon entry.
- Sale Value: Town constables and licensed investigators retiring gear receive 10% below base valuation (9 to 10 gold equivalent), with the proceeds deposited directly into the seller’s World Bank account minus the standard 1% banking transaction fee.
- Family-Run Mom and Pop Arcane Bookbinderies and Curio Boutiques
- Found along the cobblestone high streets of secondary state cities and larger chartered towns, these small family shops craft, repair, and resell niche runic items, frequently shifting their inventory and personal attire to match local trade demands and avoid heavy regional taxation.
- Buying involves direct face-to-face negotiations with the master artisan or their kin, who inspect the buyer’s Mind’s Eye resonance and haggle over the quality of the embedded Tier 1 crystalline cell and parchment binding.
- Purchase Cost: 12 to 18 gold (120 to 180 silver) depending on local access to raw elemental reagents and proximity to regional trade routes, with foreign buyers paying double the standard local sales tax of 3% at the point of sale.
- Sale Value: Shopkeepers haggle around 10% of the item’s perceived value times the seller’s Tier level (averaging 7 to 9 gold for a Tier 1 seller), logging quasi-records of the transaction that may later be scrutinized by visiting state tax assessors.
- Frontier Warlord Depots and Rural Caravan Posts
- Operating out of fortified garrisons, roadside waystations, and smaller frontier settlements along the country patrol roads between coastal ports and central hubs, these hybrid shops are managed by local warlords who double as regional adventuring guild leaders.
- Ledger acquisition here is purely transactional based on immediate frontier utility, where surplus gear stripped from fallen patrols or abandoned garrisons is resold to passing mercenary bands without strict background inquiries.
- Purchase Cost: 15 to 25 gold (150 to 250 silver, often accepted in localized non-metal tokens or nickel coinage of equivalent standardized weight), reflecting elevated frontier transport surcharges and remote scarcity.
- Sale Value: Warlords offer hard coin payments of 5 to 8 gold, bypassing the World Bank but charging a mandatory 1% transit fee if the seller intends to transport alternative merchandise through the surrounding settlement gates.
- Subterranean and Dockside Black Market Exchanges
- Hidden within shadowy wharf alleys, secluded bilge vaults of docked sea vessels, or unmapped subterranean cave districts beneath island continents, these illicit dealers specialize in untraceable, question-free exchanges of confiscated or looted official property.
- Purchases and sales are conducted strictly in physical gold or precious electrum coins handed across the counter; transactions never touch World Bank accounts, and ledger serial runes or previous constabulary ownership engravings are filed down before handoff.
- Purchase Cost: 20 to 35 gold in raw metal coin, reflecting the high markup for untracked necromantic contraband and forged provenance stamps.
- Sale Value: Black market fences pay 10 to 15 gold in unmarked coin if the ledger is in pristine working condition with an uncracked crystal, guaranteeing complete silence regarding where the gear was sourced or who previously carried it.
Tactical and Investigative Applications of the Inquest Ledger Across Diverse Environments
- Urban Streetways and Enclosed City Alleyways
- Offensive Application: In narrow metropolitan alleys between high-density tenements or guild complexes, the constable uses the ledger to confront fleeing fugitives or rogue street conjurers. By executing a somatic chant and flipping open the cold-forged iron plates, the user invokes the Spirit Shackle of the Magistrate. Spectral chains burst from the parchment leaves, seeking out ethereal familiars, reanimated thugs, or runaway suspects, immediately inflicting the Anchored condition to pin the target within a ten-foot radius. This halts escape through crowded thoroughfares, allowing the constable or accompanying watchmen to close the distance, apply physical restraints, or deliver kinetic strikes with standard constabulary truncheons while the target is immobilized.
- Defensive Application: Within the confines of cobblestone corridors or enclosed city squares, the constable utilizes the ledger’s heavy iron covers and Aura of the Inquest as a physical and metaphysical ward. Holding the ledger in an active posture grants an immediate plus one Armor Check bonus through its protective arcane coating, deflecting concealed crossbow bolts or thrown daggers. If ambushed by an urban cabal wielding localized necromancy or summoned shades, the constable initiates the full-turn Rebuke the Unquiet ritual. Shouting legal municipal ordinances aloud channels a fifteen-foot cone of pale violet silver fire across the narrow street, driving back feral scavengers, damaging spectral assailants, and forcing hostile entities into the Frightened condition so the party can secure the crime scene perimeter.
- Subterranean Cave Systems and Deep Vaults
- Offensive Application: Navigating dark cavernous highways, unmapped mining tunnels, or subterranean black-market hubs beneath the island crust requires proactive threat neutralization. When tracking cavern cutthroats or troglodytic raiders through damp shafts, the constable utilizes the Corpse Census passive ability to detect dead subterranean fauna or murdered scouts up to thirty feet away in total pitch darkness. Once a fresh corpse is identified, the constable casts Interrogate Residual Shade with a swift somatic command, pointing the bone stylus at the fallen body to extract direct, spoken directions regarding ambush positions, hidden pressure plates, or the current health status of retreating subterranean adversaries.
- Defensive Application: In the claustrophobic depths where subterranean magma flows or wild magic pockets warp sensory perception, an attack from subterranean undead can quickly overrun a vanguard. The constable plants the iron ledger firmly against the stone floor, using its mass and structural resilience to stabilize their stance. When spectral entities or cavern wraiths emerge from solid stone walls to assault the party, the wielder immediately chants the somatic trigger for Spirit Shackle, anchoring the phasing entities in place and preventing them from retreating behind impassable bedrock barriers. This holds the line, protecting rear-guard companions and preventing party separation in pitch-black tunnels.
- Maritime Decks, Port Wharfs, and Open Ocean Voyages
- Offensive Application: Aboard rolling ocean galleons or along crowded coastal shipping wharfs where salt spray and turbulent tides complicate combat, the constable deploys the ledger to counter maritime smugglers and naval raiders. During boarding skirmishes across gangplanks, the wielder raises the book toward hostile boarding parties, unleashing the Spirit Shackle to anchor enemy skirmishers directly to the ship’s rigging or deck railing. This limits enemy mobility across wet, slippery planks, leaving them vulnerable to coordinated ranged fire from party members wielding black-powder firearms or standard bows from the quarterdeck.
- Defensive Application: In maritime environments subjected to unpredictable coastal storms or sudden boarding actions by drowned specters, the waterproof alchemical vellum ensures all defensive runes remain fully operational regardless of heavy rain or seawater splashes. When boarding parties of ocean-dwelling monstrosities or drowned sailors swarm the ship’s forecastle, the constable steps to the front hatch and performs the Rebuke the Unquiet ritual. Chanting the admiralty codes of the island monarch over six seconds unleashes a sweeping arc of radiant silver energy across the main deck, searing the attackers with amplified ritual damage and compelling aquatic predators to leap backward into the sea under the Frightened condition.
- Wilderness Frontiers, Deep Forests, and Ancient Bogs
- Offensive Application: Out on the untamed borders beyond municipal garrison patrols, where dense foliage and aggressive fungal flora mask predator movements, the constable uses the ledger for aggressive tracking. By deploying the Corpse Census, the avatar tracks the trail of slain beasts left in the wake of dangerous poachers or feral packs. Upon finding a freshly killed carcass, the constable performs Interrogate Residual Shade to extract the true name, approximate numbers, and combat capabilities of the beast pack or outlaw band that passed through, recording the intelligence directly onto the indestructible parchment for strategic ambush planning.
- Defensive Application: When resting in isolated wilderness clearings or navigating hazardous bogs where feral beasts and rogue undead stalk the party camp, the constable uses the ledger as an early-warning sentinel. The electrum clasp vibrates the moment an animated corpse or unquiet predator enters the thirty-foot perimeter, eliminating the risk of being caught flat-footed during night watches. If the camp is rushed by predatory wildlife or animated swamp remains, the constable immediately deploys Spirit Shackle of the Magistrate against the largest charging beast, halting its forward momentum ten feet from the bedrolls and allowing the party to form a defensive line without losing ground to sudden overrun tactics.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective (The Five Senses)
- Visual: The moment attunement completes and activation is triggered, the runic inscriptions along the iron perimeter flare with a concentrated, cold violet glow. The internal Tier 1 crystalline cell suspended along the spine pulses rhythmically, casting deep purple light across the vellum pages while newly revealed script bleeds onto the treated paper in dark, indelible lines.
- Auditory: A distinct, metallic click echoes as the electrum clasp releases, followed immediately by a low, vibrating hum that resonates at the edge of hearing. When the user speaks the incantation, the sound of the user’s voice reverberates with a slight, double-toned echo, accompanied by the dry rustling sound of pages settling and the faint scratching noise of invisible writing taking shape.
- Tactile: The heavy, cold-forged iron plates drop rapidly in temperature, sending a crisp, numbing chill into the user’s fingers that crawls slightly up the wrist. As the crystal channels power, a static charge tingles across the palm, making the user’s skin prickle while the bone stylus feels remarkably warm and vibrating in the grip.
- Olfactory: A sharp, dry scent of ozone and chilled mineral dust cuts through the air, quickly accompanied by the ancient, papery aroma of cured bog-vellum, dried ink, and a faint, bitter undertone reminiscent of dried marsh roots and petrified wood.
- Gustatory: A dry, metallic tang—akin to copper or the taste of clean iron—manifests at the back of the mouth and on the tongue during the somatic phrasing, accompanied by a cool, mint-like dry sensation across the palate as the words of authority are spoken.
- User’s Perspective (Extra-Sensory Perceptions)
- Mind’s Eye Stats Readout: The user experiences an instantaneous, crisp illumination across the inner vision, projecting precise numerical and structural details of the targeted entity, including remaining vital durability, active debuffs, and exact planar tether status.
- Spiritual Resonance and Tether Awareness: A distinct, pulling sensation tugs at the core consciousness, establishing an invisible thread between the ledger and the lingering psychic footprint of the deceased or bound entity, allowing the user to intuitively gauge distance and spiritual resistance.
- Chrono-Spatial Anchoring: The user feels a subtle, steadying weight settle over their center of gravity, a metaphysical sense of immovable authority that aligns the user’s temporal cadence directly with the rigid mechanical structure of the island’s jurisprudence.
- Observer’s Perspective (The Five Senses)
- Visual: Observers witness the dull iron covers suddenly sharpen in clarity as glowing purple runes trace the edges, casting stark, elongated shadows across the immediate ground. A soft, ultraviolet luminescence radiates from the central crystal capsule, while faint, wispy purple filaments drift like cold vapor from the edges of the open leaves.
- Auditory: Bystanders hear a sharp, resonant chime like a struck tuning fork, followed by the constable’s voice carrying an unnaturally clear, authoritative cadence that cuts through ambient noise, alongside a hollow, rhythmic thrumming sound originating from the book’s spine.
- Tactile: Individuals standing within arm’s reach experience a sudden, localized draft of brisk, air-conditioned coldness, accompanied by the hairs on their arms standing up due to the static arcane charge dispersing into the immediate surrounding space.
- Olfactory: Observers notice the sudden suppression of local ambient odors, replaced by the clean, sharp smell of cold slate, ozone, and aged, library-vault parchment.
- Gustatory: Those speaking or breathing heavily near the perimeter register a brief, faint taste of static electricity and iron dust on their lips.
- Observer’s Perspective (Extra-Sensory Perceptions)
- Subconscious Intimidation: Nearby creatures and onlookers feel an instinctive, chilling pressure pressing against their instincts—a sudden, unbidden impulse to stand still, lower their gaze, and maintain silence in the presence of formal inquest proceedings.
- Weave Disturbance: Magic-sensitive observers perceive a distinct, localized tightening of the ambient weave, as if the local magical currents are being drawn into an orderly, rigid geometric vortex centered entirely upon the book.
- Positives
- Provides total, unquestionable visual clarity and instant documentation of witness testimony without requiring manual ink or writing implements during chaotic moments.
- Unambiguous sensory feedback confirms the exact moment the target is caught within the spiritual shackle or when an interrogative tether is successfully established.
- The cold, authoritative presence projected by the item naturally asserts procedural command over chaotic crime scenes and discourages interference from unruly bystanders.
- Negatives
- The bright violet luminescence and resonant acoustic hum immediately reveal the user’s presence, position, and active focus, eliminating any opportunity for stealth operations.
- The physical chill and static discharge can cause minor numbness in the user’s hands if maintained for extended intervals, slightly reducing fine manual dexterity with secondary tools.
- The sharp, invasive spiritual pressure and odor of binding magic can cause nearby sensitive beasts or innocent onlookers to become uneasy, hostile, or frightened without intent.
Recipe: Inquest Constable’s Iron Ledger (Tier 1 Common)
- Materials Needed
- One Tier 1 magic crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested from a slain magical creature or purchased via standard mercantile exchange) to act as the primary catalytic battery and arcane power source.
- Two sheets of refined, cold-forged iron plates (each approximately six by nine inches and one-eighth inch thick) to form the durable front and rear structural bindings.
- Twenty-four leaves of cured, high-grade vellum parchment treated with distilled tree sap and bog water extracts to ensure total fluid resistance and indelible ink retention.
- One electrum latch fixture (weighing equivalent to two electrum pieces or one standard gold piece) cast into an open-eye sigil for the locking mechanism.
- Two fluid drams of biologically harvested corpse fluid and distilled mire extract, obtained via a fluid collector from a fallen sentient being or monster, used as the alchemical reagent base to bind necromantic properties.
- One cylindrical borosilicate glass vial with copper capping brackets to house the suspended crystalline core along the spine.
- One stylus carved from mundane dense animal bone, fitted with an electrum runic ferrule.
- Three ounces of powdered silver and crushed quartz flux for etching and inlaying conductive planar script into the iron plating.
- Tools Required
- One standard fluid collector syringe (fitted with an extraction needle for drawing organic, source-specific tree saps, marsh distillates, and creature fluids).
- Artisan jeweler’s engraving burins and hardened steel chisels for cutting precise runic channels into the metal casing.
- Leatherworking awl, heavy linen thread, and a bookbinder’s manual screw press.
- Alchemical crucible, miniature glass distillation apparatus, and an arcane heating burner powered by elemental steam or heat.
- A Mind’s Eye calibration loupe or focusing lens to verify alignment of the internal conduit patterns.
- Skill Requirements
- Alchemical Crafting: Minimum skill level of 5 (required for distilling the fluid collector extracts and preparing the preservative stabilization bath for the crystal).
- Runecrafting and Inscription: Minimum skill level of 5 (required for cutting the foundational legal transcription runes and binding matrices into the iron plates).
- Blacksmithing or Fine Metalworking: Minimum skill level of 4 (required to forge, temper, and fit the cold-iron plates and electrum latch).
- General Arcane Knowledge: Basic understanding of Tier 1 necromantic conduits and spiritual tether frequencies.
- Crafting Steps
- Step 1: Using the fluid collector, extract two drams of reactive biological fluid from a preserved corpse or creature remains, along with one dram of distilled mire sap. Combine these reagents within the heated crucible, boiling off excess water until a viscous, translucent violet bonding medium forms.
- Step 2: Immerse the twenty-four sheets of vellum parchment into the distilled sap solution. Allow the leaves to soak under low elemental heat for four hours, then transfer them to the bookbinder’s press to cure flat, rendering the vellum completely non-absorbent to non-magical fluids and receptive to spectral inscription.
- Step 3: Forge and surface-grind the two cold-iron binder plates. Using fine engraving burins, carve the perimeter border of judicial binding runes into the interior and exterior margins of both plates, ensuring all conduits terminate cleanly at the hinge mounts.
- Step 4: Mix the powdered silver with crushed quartz and a drop of the alchemical bonding fluid, then pack the slurry into the freshly carved runic channels. Apply brief heat to fuse the inlay directly into the iron, forming permanent, conductive arcane circuits.
- Step 5: Mount the Tier 1 magic crystal inside the glass vial, flooding the chamber with the remaining stabilized fluid medium before sealing both ends with the copper cap brackets. Affix the sealed vial directly to the iron spine assembly using mechanical rivets.
- Step 6: Collate and stitch the cured parchment signatures using waxed binding thread, anchoring the gatherings securely between the two cold-iron cover plates. Attach the electrum open-eye latch mechanism to the front cover and side bracket.
- Step 7: Carve the bone stylus, setting an electrum rune along its tip, and fit it into the side leather holster stitched along the rear iron plate.
- Step 8: Perform a ten-minute ritual attunement and calibration check. The crafter focuses their Mind’s Eye upon the completed ledger, chanting the somatic formula of authority to route ambient mana from the crystal through the silver-inlaid conduits, confirming that the runes pulse violet and the electrum latch vibrates into an active, locked state.
Spells of the Judicial Inquest
- Necromantic Summons of the Fallen 419
- Description: This spell directs a subtle conduit of necromantic power into the physical remains of a recently deceased creature or humanoid. It draws upon the latent spiritual imprint of the target to temporarily manifest a semi-translucent, shadowy phantom above the remains for up to two minutes. The summoned shade is incapable of physical harm, flight, or moving beyond ten feet from its physical form, but it possesses the ability to speak using the voice and basic languages it possessed in life. While active, the shade must answer simple, factual questions regarding the immediate circumstances of its demise, after which it dissolves back into the ether.
- Roleplay: The constable places the iron-bound ledger flat upon the chest or skull of the deceased and draws the bone stylus across the open parchment. Speaking a steady, measured somatic phrase with firm judicial weight, the user calls out the subject’s known name or title. A crisp, chilling breeze sweeps across the floor as thin tendrils of violet mist rise from the corpse’s mouth and eyes, congealing into the hazy outline of the departed witness. The constable remains stoic, holding the book steady as the ghost whispers hoarsely, diligently verifying each spoken detail before allowing the apparition to fade into soft purple sparks.
- Shackle of the Transgressor 872
- Description: Designed to incapacitate fleeing culprits, unruly shades, or reanimated horrors, this offensive abjuration-necromancy hybrid spell projects hardened bands of spectral force from the pages of the ledger. Upon a successful attack roll against the target’s total Armor Check, ethereal iron chains shoot forward in a direct line up to thirty feet, wrapping around the target’s limbs and imposing the Anchored condition. The entrapped entity cannot move more than ten feet away from the initial point of impact for one minute and suffers disadvantage on all physical strike rolls while ensnared. If the target attempts a forceful escape, the chains constrict, inflicting immediate tier-based necrotic feedback damage.
- Roleplay: Spotting a retreating suspect or rogue creature attempting to vanish through a narrow corridor, the constable snaps the electrum latch open with the thumb and points the open cover toward the fleeing target. Chanting a swift, two-second command of arrest, the constable’s voice booms with a sharp, resonant ring that cuts through the din of the surrounding area. Glowing violet links of spectral chain erupt with the sound of rattling iron, whipping through the air to clamp around the fugitive’s ankles and wrists. As the target stumbles to a halt, the constable grips the ledger firmly, marching forward at an even, deliberate pace while the bindings keep the suspect secure.
- Decree of the Inquest Barrier 635
- Description: This ritual warding spell creates a temporary, localized sanctuary around a designated investigation zone, crime scene, or camp perimeter. By inscribing perimeter sigils and reciting a formal declaration of authority for longer than six seconds, the caster establishes an invisible, ten-foot-radius circular perimeter centered on the open ledger. Minor spectral entities, wandering feral spirits, and mindless undead cannot cross the perimeter line. Furthermore, any magical scrying attempts, invisible observers, or unauthorized active spells entering the boundary flare with a bright ultraviolet outline, immediately exposing their presence to everyone within the barrier.
- Roleplay: Arriving at a chaotic scene in a dark alleyway or secluded cavern vault, the constable sets the ledger down upon a crate or cobblestone and traces a wide circle in the dust using the bone stylus. Reciting the complete constitutional ordinances of municipal quarantine with deliberate, rhythmic volume, the constable draws the attention of all nearby allies and bystanders. The iron pages vibrate with a continuous, low-frequency hum as a faint purple ring illuminates along the ground, sealing off the interior. As curious scavengers or intrusive ethereal spies draw near, the constable stands guard at the circle’s edge, confidently organizing evidence collection while the perimeter ward holds back external interference.
Iron Examiner and Quieted Mouth
Great high time ago, when the big sky world did rock upon its mother wind and the moon of Gaialilith walked early in the high blackness, the land of big stones did have many men who make anger. In those days of the first kingdoms, when the queen mother did own all earth and every man did pay small metal to sit upon the dirt, there walked a watcher of laws named Kaelen. He was bearer of the heavy grey plate and the rod of city peace.
In the walled place of high dwellings where five thousand souls did shout together, much badness did fall in the dark hours between the falling of Helios and the early waking light. A great merchant of shiny things, who had given many electrum coins to the world house of commerce to keep safe his count, was found with his breath broken. His skin was cold like the winter ice from the void, and his blood had run long into the cracks of the road.
The people of the market did make loud noise with their throats. They did point the finger of blame at the wandering travellers from far island continents, and they did point at the beast-men who carry the memories of old lives within their furry heads. But no living eye had seen the hand that made the cutting. The law maker of the high court did speak with anger to Kaelen: “Find the breaker of our peace before the second sun reaches the middle hour of eleven, or your head shall be taken to pay the royal tax!”
Kaelen had great sorrow in his belly. He walked to the dark hole beneath the city where the master of tools and fire did live. This maker of strange wares did take the iron skin of a slain earth-beast and did hammer it flat with big noise. He took the dry skin of bog plants that do not drink water, and inside the hard bone spine he placed a tiny shining stone of level one power, taken from the neck of a dead bird of magic. The maker of tools did cut crooked marks upon the iron with silver dust and fire.
“Take this heavy iron paper-box,” the tool master did grunt with his mouth. “It speaks with the wind of the dead ones before they sleep in the sea of many souls. But heed the rule of the great goddess: the dead do not tell the lies of the living, yet they see only through the purple smoke of their own falling.”
Kaelen took the iron paper-box to the dead merchant who lay upon the wet stones. He pulled the small bone stick from its side and made a chant of small words, not shouting loud, but speaking with the formal somatics of the law court. He touched the iron latch that was shaped like the wide open eye.
A strange and bad noise did come out from the book, like two iron carts hitting together in the dark. The tiny crystal along the spine did shine with the purple fire of heaven. From the cold mouth of the dead merchant came a thick mist, smelling of old swamp muck and the juice of sour trees. The mist did take the shape of the dead man’s face, floating two spans above his broken chest.
Kaelen spoke into the cold air: “Who took your breath and ran into the night with your gold?”
The ghost of the merchant did weep without water. The voice was like dry leaves being dragged across dry earth. “It was not the stranger from the sea, nor was it the beast of four legs. It was my own blood brother, who sits upon the seat of the city judge! He wished to take my paper of land-rent and give no coin to the crown. He struck me with his silver mace while I did count my copper tokens.”
As the ghost spoke, the words did burn themselves into the white pages of the iron ledger, turning black and unmovable forever. No water could wash them away, and no flame could turn them to ash.
Kaelen closed the iron covers with a great slam of metal. He walked straight to the high palace where the city judge sat with the guild master and the men of the royal army. The judge was smiling with broad teeth, telling the people that a wild monster from the outer forests had eaten his brother’s life.
The constable did not draw his sword of iron. He placed the heavy ledger upon the great stone table before the court. He turned the electrum latch, and the purple light of the necromantic crystal flared bright across the eyes of the nobles. The cold voice of the slain merchant rose from the pages, reciting the hour, the place, and the true name of the brother who struck the blow.
The judge turned pale like the white belly of a dead fish. He jumped from his high seat and tried to run toward the palace gates to take a sea ship to the west. But Kaelen pointed the open iron ledger at the running feet of the judge. He shouted the words of arrest with great ritual voice.
From the open book flew long chains made of purple smoke and hard iron magic. They wrapped around the legs of the wicked judge and threw him hard against the ground, holding him tight so he could move no more than ten small paces. The royal guards took him by the arms and threw him into the deep stone cage beneath the monarch’s hall to await the judgment of the queen.
The people of the city did cheer with great joy, and the king’s court gave Kaelen one thousand coins of gold for keeping the honor of the race and the law. The iron book was kept upon his belt until the day his own avatar did turn into purple sparks and leave only the soul stone behind upon the ground.
Moral of the Story: The mouth of the living may weave a thousand crooked nets of deceit to hide its greed, but when the iron ledger calls, the quieted throat of the dead speaks only the straight arrow of truth.

- Post-Mortem Deposition: When you Attune to the spectral residue of a fresh corpse (dead within a day), you may spend 1 Stress to compel the lingering ghost to answer questions as if conducting a formal interrogation. Take +1d to your Gather Information roll. On a 4/5 result, the spirit answers truthfully, but draws unwanted attention from the Spirit Wardens or nearby ghosts. On a 6, clear, indelible script documents the testimony on the vellum without complication.
- Ghost Shackles: You may spend 2 Stress to project ethereal binding chains against a nearby ghost, hollow, or supernatural threat within close range. Roll Attune. On a 1–3, the chains fail and you suffer Level 1 Harm (Psychic Feedback). On a 4/5, the target is pinned in place (imposing Limited Effect or lost initiative on the opposition) for a few moments, but you suffer devil’s bargain consequences. On a 6, the target is fully immobilized (Great Effect) for the duration of the scene or until you release it.
- Judicial Ward: Spend 1 Stress to push yourself during an occult ritual. The book emanates a faint violet circle (close range) that repels wandering spirits and minor horrors, giving all allies inside +1d to resistance rolls against supernatural terror.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)
Iron Ledger of the Judicial Inquest
- Item Type: Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement by a character proficient in Investigation, Insight, or Intimidation)
- Armor Class Bonus: While worn visibly on a belt or held in hand, this item grants a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
- Charges: The ledger has 3 charges. It regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the embedded crystalline cell shatters, turning into mundane glass shards and rendering the activated properties inert until replaced.
- Passive Properties:
- You gain advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) and Wisdom (Insight) checks made while examining a crime scene or physical remains.
- You instinctively sense the presence of any corpse or undead creature within 30 feet of you, though you do not learn its exact location if it is behind total cover.
- Actions & Spells:
- Interrogate Residual Shade (1 Charge): As an action, you touch the ledger to the body of a creature that has been dead for no longer than 24 hours. The corpse’s spirit temporarily animates as a faint, spectral bust. You can ask the spirit up to two questions. The corpse knows only what it knew in life and must answer truthfully. Once this property is used on a corpse, that corpse cannot be targeted by this ledger again for 10 days.
- Spirit Shackle (1 Charge): As an action, you choose a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength or Wisdom saving throw (target’s choice) or be restrained by ghostly iron chains for 1 minute. A restrained creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.
- Decree of Banishment (2 Charges): As an action, you hold forth the ledger and recite formal judicial authority. Each undead creature within a 15-foot cone must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage, fleeing from you immediately.
Knave (2nd Edition)
The Constable’s Iron Ledger
- Item Type & Item Slots: Magic Relic, 1 Item Slot (Carried/Equipped).
- Durability: 10/10 Quality points (loses 1 Quality upon taking direct damage or rolling a critical fumble during spellcasting).
- Armor Bonus: +1 Armor Point (contributes toward total Armor Defense cap).
- Charges: 3 Power charges per day (refilled after a full night’s safe rest and meal).
- Game Mechanics:
- Question the Dead (1 Charge): Cast by touching the cold iron cover to a corpse slain within the past turn (day). Make an Intelligence check. If successful, the spirit speaks two true sentences regarding its killer or its immediate demise before vanishing. The testimony appears written in un-erasable silver ink on the book’s pages.
- Spectral Shackle (1 Charge): Cast by pointing the open book at a visible foe within 30 feet. The target makes a Strength save against your casting DC (15 + your Intelligence bonus). On a failure, spectral chains erupt and anchor the target to the floor; it cannot move from its spot for 1d4 combat rounds, though it may still attack adjacent targets.
- Turn Undead (2 Charges): Present the ledger and speak an authoritative decree. All mindless skeletons, zombies, and minor ghosts within 30 feet must make a Wisdom save or flee in terror for 1d6 rounds.

- Neural Tether / Stasis Chains (Level 4 task): The bearer aims the slate at a moving target within short range (50 feet). Hard-light magnetic bands wrap around the target, hindering all of its physical actions by two steps and immobilizing it for one minute on a successful Intellect roll.
- Warding Perimeter (Level 4 task): By spending 2 points from your Intellect Pool, you project a localized defensive field (immediate radius). Unaligned automatons and energy-based entities must succeed on a level 4 defense roll to breach the boundary.

- Active Magics & Matrix-Astral Mechanics:
- Astral Interrogation: The awakened character touches the slate to a corpse slain within the last 24 hours and takes a Major Action to make an Astral + Intuition vs. Target’s Willpower (or remaining Astral Threshold) test. The answers etch themselves onto the enchanted vellum leaves in permanent, encrypted runic text.
- Spiritual Shackle: As a Major Action, the wielder targets a manifested spirit, astral projection, or physical target within 10 meters, making a Sorcery + Magic vs. Reaction + Willpower test.
