Lore
- In the ancient diplomatic enclaves of Saṃsāra, where bitter schisms threatened to dissolve entire city-states, arbiters sought an instrument that could foresee branching outcomes while gently guiding hostile hearts toward accord.
- Alchemists and runic enchanters fused the sentient druidic essence of a peace-seeking focus, a melancholy looking-glass etched with the sorrow of forgotten promises, and the phase-parchments of an ancient probabilistic seer into a single arcane conduit.
- Through high-crucible alchemy and the binding resonance of a Tier-3 catalyst crystal, the three distinct Tier-1 frameworks merged permanently into a singular handheld relic.
- The resulting artifact retains a calm, sentient consciousness that feels the emotional resonance of abandoned pasts, using the threads of destiny to weave empathy, de-escalate violence, and deflect hostile intent.
Description
- The item is a handheld, circular mirror-focus framed in sacred, polished Peacewood and bound tightly with interwoven golden chrono-threads that hum with latent temporal energy.
- The reflective face is crafted from flawless alchemical glass backed with moonstone dust, while the reverse side features delicate silver engravings of wilting roses and retracting vines intertwined with intricate, flowing runes of peace.
- Embedded around the wooden bezel are small, smooth soothing stones flanking a radiant central Harmony Crystal, alongside a sapphire sliver carved with the glyph of the unseen fork.
- Across the outer rim and backplates, luminescent destiny-ink flows continuously under a clear protective glaze, dynamically shifting into glowing symbols and spinning geometric lines in response to nearby emotional tension.
- The entire focus is lightweight, compact, and balanced to rest comfortably in the palm or be wielded in a single hand.

Multiple Passives Magic
- Abandoned Vector Ward: The mirror’s abjuration field subtly redirects the trajectory of hostile strikes, granting a +2 bonus to Armor Check (AC) as incoming attacks are treated as “forsaken intent” and guided away.
- Aura of Serene Equilibrium: The sentient consciousness radiates a continuous, 15-foot calming field that steadies the wielder and allies, providing a +2 bonus to saving throws against fear, rage, and magical charm or confusion.
- Probability Thread Awareness: The wielder senses subtle pressure gradients around choices and branching actions, gaining an intuitive awareness of when an immediate situation carries high narrative or tactical stakes.
- Emotional Texture Resonance: The focus passively detects shifts in nearby emotional states (anger, sorrow, fear, or malice) and communicates them to the wielder through gentle vibrations and soothing auditory hums.
Multiple Active Magics
- Weave of Fateful Intervention (4 Charges/Day): By invoking the glowing destiny-ink, the wielder alters the thread of immediate reality to reroll any failed d20 roll (attack, skill check, or saving throw) or force a hostile creature to reroll a successful attack against an ally.
- Sanctuary of Tranquil Accord (Action): The sentient focus releases a soothing harmonic chime in a 30-foot emanation, casting a potent tranquility wave that suppresses hostile intentions and forces aggressive creatures to make a mental resistance save or become peaceful for 10 minutes.
- Divination of the Forsaken Path (Action, 1 Charge): The wielder gazes into the reflective glass to ask a question regarding a hidden truth, a past loss, or the probable outcome of a pending decision, receiving an enigmatic but accurate symbolic vision.
- Visage of the Forsaken (Action, 1 Charge): The mirror projects an illusion that overlays the wielder’s form for 10 minutes, making them appear as a significant person the target has abandoned, loved, or lost, creating a deep emotional distraction that imposes disadvantage on the target’s actions.

Targeting, Item Hit Points, and Restoration Protocols
- Item Hit Points and Disabling Threshold:
- When an attacker declares a targeted strike against Mirror-Focus 491 of the Harmonious Weave and Forsaken Fates, the Armor Check (AC) required to hit the item equals the wielder’s base AC plus the avatar’s tier level (3), plus the roll of the avatar’s tier die (3d10), plus the item’s inherent +2 AC abjuration bonus.
- A successful direct strike immediately breaks the wielder’s attunement, rendering all active abilities dormant until a 10-minute realignment ritual is performed.
- The maximum Item Hit Points (HP) for this Tier 3 rare focus equals the wielder’s maximum hit points plus 30 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 3).
- An attacker dealing unmitigated damage directly to the focus reduces this pool; reducing the item to 50% or less of its maximum HP inflicts the broken condition, disabling all passive wards, active fate rerolls, divination visions, and sentient communication.
- If the focus is reduced to 0 HP, its structural matrix shatters completely, destroying the Peacewood frame, cracking the Harmony Crystal, and scattering the golden chrono-threads into inert ash.
- Item Repair and Magical Reconstruction:
- The mirror-focus does not regenerate hit points over time or restore its integrity during short or long rest cycles; restoration requires active crafting intervention.
- An artisan performing repairs must possess a minimum skill level of 5 plus the item’s tier level (requiring a total skill level of at least 8 in Woodworking, Enchanting/Runecrafting, Jewelcrafting, or Alchemy).
- Repair requires a dedicated workshop equipped with an artisan’s carving set, an essence infuser, an enchantment kiln, and a chronotemporal scriptorium setup.
- Restorative materials include carved segments of pristine Peacewood, consecrated moonstone dust, replacement golden chrono-threads, a fresh vial of destiny-touched ink, and alchemical essence of serenity.
- The artisan must carefully reset any dislodged soothing stones, re-inscribe damaged peace runes using diplomat’s ink, and mend cracks across the alchemical glass face without disrupting the internal spirit resonance.
- Once physical HP is restored above the 50% threshold, the crafter must channel raw mana through the Harmony Crystal and the sapphire sliver for one uninterrupted hour to re-awaken the druidic consciousness, after which a full attunement ritual restores all magical functions.
Acquisition, Commercial Outlets, and Economic Valuations of Mirror-Focus 491
- Methods of Acquisition:
- Masterwork Synthesis and Crucible Integration: The primary path to acquiring this specialized Tier 3 tool is commissioning a master enchanter, druidic artisan, or runecrafter with a minimum skill level of 8 across Woodworking, Enchanting, Alchemy, and Runecrafting. The crafter must fuse the three constituent Tier 1 relics (Intelligent 5862 of Harmonious Accord, Cosmetic 17 of Forgotten Elegance, and Scrolls of Destiny’s Embrace) using a Tier-3 catalyst crystal. A crafting surcharge of 15% of total component value applies, along with the standard risk roll to avoid component loss on a critical failure.
- Diplomatic Conclave Bequest or Treaty Grant: Conferred upon an avatar by the Grand High Council of Arbiters or an elder druidic circle after successfully resolving a catastrophic inter-factional war, brokering a historic peace accord, or preventing an elemental discord without bloodshed.
- Exploration of Chrono-Temporal Ruins and Forgotten Glades: Recovered from sealed sanctums such as the ruined libraries of the Whispered Tense, the Swamp of Unwalked Paths, or the lost arboretums of Val’orian, where ancient peacekeepers stored sentient instruments of fate manipulation before their civilizations fell.
- Types of Shops and Commercial Establishments:
- High-Chamber Diplomatic Emporiums and State Vestries:
- Situated in the high courts of capital cities, council halls of neutral city-states, or grand embassy enclaves.
- The atmosphere is serene, carpeted with thick velvet, and quiet, smelling of dry parchment, polished cedar, and soothing lavender incense.
- Purchasing Cost: Denominated primarily in the Platinum standard for Tier 3 relics. These authorized state repositories sell the mirror-focus for 700 to 900 Platinum Coins (equivalent to 7,000 to 9,000 Gold pieces). Avatars holding verified credentials as bonded arbiters, high-standing peacekeepers, or guild ambassadors receive a 10% discount per character tier level (up to a 30% discount for a Tier 3 character, reducing the price to 490 to 630 Platinum).
- Selling to Shopkeeper: Diplomatic evaluators conduct an empathic communion with the internal spirit to verify its temper. They offer 50% of the baseline valuation (350 to 450 Platinum), credited directly to the seller’s World Bank ledger.
- Planar Antiquarian Ateliers and Temporal Scriptoriums:
- Located in arcane academy districts, crystal spires, or esoteric planar bazaars catering to chronomancers, seers, and high-tier diviners.
- The shop environment is dense with hourglasses, floating astrological orbs, and glass cases filled with glowing inks, humming with low harmonic resonance.
- Purchasing Cost: Arcane curators price the mirror-focus at 750 to 850 Platinum Coins in certified bank drafts or equivalent high-grade enchanting components (such as uncut harmony crystals and vials of distilled aetherlight).
- Selling to Shopkeeper: Antiquarians verify the remaining elasticity of the golden chrono-threads and the integrity of the fate-ink, paying 375 to 425 Platinum into the seller’s account.
- Shadow Bazaars and Free-Trader Relic Caravans:
- Found in lawless border ports, deep-desert trading tents, or subterranean salvage alleys where goods change hands without municipal taxation or background scrutiny.
- The vibe is tense, secretive, and opportunistic, with transactions conducted behind heavy silk drapes.
- Purchasing Cost: Transacted entirely in raw, physical coinage or direct barter without World Bank logging. Due to black-market demand for unrecorded fate-altering devices and psychological manipulation tools, shadow brokers charge a premium of 950 to 1,200 Platinum Coins in hard metal (9,500 to 12,000 Gold pieces).
- Selling to Shopkeeper: Fences and salvage merchants offer 300 to 350 Platinum in unmarked coin. If a local warlord, high-profile trial, or impending siege creates an urgent demand for a de-escalation or illusion focus, brokers will pay up to 550 to 600 Platinum in physical metal to secure the item on the spot.
- High-Chamber Diplomatic Emporiums and State Vestries:
Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Defense and Offense with Mirror-Focus 491
- Diplomatic Chambers, High Courts, and Royal Summits:
- Defensive Applications: In tense summit halls where Armor Check is doubled or tripled, the wielder holds the focus in one hand to radiate a 15-foot calming field. When rival ambassadors or hostile delegates attempt high-pressure intimidation, emotional manipulation, or deceit, the focus pulses with gentle warmth, anchoring the wielder’s composure. The empathic link translates vocal inflections and nervous micro-movements, warning the wielder of hidden traps or dishonest terms before signatures are placed.
- Offensive Applications: When negotiations stall or threaten to devolve into open hostility, the wielder invokes the Sanctuary of Tranquil Accord. A soft, harmonic chime resonates through the room, suppressing aggressive impulses and forcing hot-headed nobles into calm contemplation. If an opponent relies on deceitful rhetoric, the wielder activates the Divination of the Forsaken Path to uncover the adversary’s underlying vulnerabilities, steering the debate to dismantle their position without raising a weapon.
- Crowded Urban Districts, Riotous Plazas, and Black Bazaars:
- Defensive Applications: Amid volatile riots or hostile street mobs, the wielder uses the Abandoned Vector Ward to turn incoming projectiles and melee strikes into “forsaken intents,” causing thrown stones and daggers to slide harmlessly off course. The serene aura prevents the wielder and nearby allies from being swept up in mass panic, clearing a steady path through chaotic crowds.
- Offensive Applications: To disperse an aggressive mob or disarm a street enforcer without bloodshed, the wielder channels the sentient focus to release a soothing wave that calms the crowd’s fury. In infiltration or evasion scenarios, the wielder activates the Visage of the Forsaken, taking on the likeness of an authority figure or a lost acquaintance known to the guards, disorienting sentries and bypassing checkpoints without alerting security.
- Active Battlefields, War Trenches, and Ambush Routes:
- Defensive Applications: In lethal combat zones, the wielder raises the mirror-focus to interject directly into the flow of causality. When an ally faces a catastrophic critical strike, the wielder activates the Weave of Fateful Intervention, spending a charge to unravel the incoming blow and force the attacker to reroll. The 15-foot aura prevents front-line companions from succumbing to magical fear or battlefield frenzy, maintaining formation against superior numbers.
- Offensive Applications: Rather than dealing brute physical damage, the wielder uses the focus to disrupt the enemy’s tactical coordination. Projecting the Visage of the Forsaken toward an enemy commander creates a sudden vision of a betrayed ally or fallen companion, imposing severe hesitation and breaking their command rhythm. The wielder then invokes the destiny-ink to alter probability threads, guaranteeing that allied counter-strikes find critical openings in enemy armor.
- Dense Wilderness, Sacred Groves, and Elemental Crossings:
- Defensive Applications: Moving through uncharted wilds or unstable elemental crossings, the focus resonates with ambient nature to shield the party from environmental hostility. The wielder detects territorial predators through emotional sensing long before visual contact occurs, while the tranquil aura pacifies charging beasts and calms turbulent elemental currents.
- Offensive Applications: In encounters with corrupted nature spirits or aggressive beasts, the wielder channels the druidic essence within the Peacewood frame to align with the local ecosystem. By projecting harmonic frequencies, the focus pacifies hostile fauna and resolves elemental disturbances, neutralizing threats through natural balance rather than destructive combat.
- Deathly Zones, Void Chasms, and Ruined Chrono-Temporal Vaults:
- Defensive Applications: In zones of absolute lethality where Armor Check is reduced to zero and physical blows land automatically, standard deflection ceases to function. The wielder relies entirely on the focus’s probabilistic manipulation, burning charges of Fateful Intervention to negate fatal strikes. The sentient consciousness reinforces the wielder’s mind against maddening cosmic dread, while the temporal awareness tracks unstable anomalies and spatial fractures.
- Offensive Applications: In shattered planar spaces where wild causality distorts reality, the wielder uses the sapphire sliver and glowing destiny-ink to read the branching forks of probability. By gazing into the reflective glass via Divination of the Forsaken Path, the wielder identifies the exact moment and vector where an eldritch anomaly is most vulnerable, directing party resources with surgical precision to collapse hostile temporal rifts.

Perception of Activation:
User’s Perspective
- Sight: The reflective face of the glass clears to an impossible, lucid depth, surrounded by spinning geometric rings of luminescent, iridescent destiny-ink along the wooden bezel. Faint, ethereal golden threads of light become visible in the periphery, connecting the mirror to nearby people, branching decision paths, and objects of emotional significance.
- Hearing: A soft, harmonic chime rings out like a chime played in reverse, followed by a continuous, low-frequency hum of tranquil resonance. The wielder hears the soothing, non-verbal whispers of the druidic spirit directly in the mind, pointing out hidden emotional tensions and deceitful tones with absolute calm.
- Touch: The polished Peacewood frame vibrates gently against the palm with a rhythmic, heartbeat-like pulse from the golden chrono-threads. A refreshing, smooth coolness spreads from the fingertips up the arm, relieving muscle fatigue and physical tension, while a subtle weightlessness washes over the hand.
- Smell: A layered, evocative fragrance rises from the focus—blending freshly carved cedar, sacred grove blossoms, and calming dried lavender with the phantom scent of old parchment, ozone, and bittersweet wilted rose petals.
- Taste: A crisp, electric cleanliness rests upon the palate, resembling static mountain air and pure spring water mixed with a faint, metallic trace of cold silver ink.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Chrono-Probabilistic Density Sense: The wielder feels distinct pressure gradients across the torso and brow, intuitively sensing when an immediate moment carries massive causal weight and which choices will successfully bend probability.
- Empathic Emotional Texture: The emotional states of nearby beings (fear, resentment, sorrow, or hostility) register as distinct energetic frequencies, allowing the wielder to read hidden motives and de-escalate tension before hostility erupts.
- Echo of Unwalked Futures: When invoking a fate alteration, the wielder perceives a fleeting, dreamlike flash of the negative outcome that was just averted—a sword blow landing, a failed treaty, or a broken ward—before snapping back to the newly woven reality.
- Sanctuary Compassion Field: An all-encompassing aura of tranquility wraps around the wielder’s psyche, filtering out incoming psychic discord, rage, and magical panic.
Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Onlookers see the circular wooden focus ignite with a ring of radiant, shifting runes and golden threads that seem to hover in the air around the frame. The central Harmony Crystal and sapphire sliver cast a warm, golden-amber and sapphire light across the wielder’s face, while the reflection in the mirror appears to gently ripple like sunlit water.
- Hearing: A soothing, crystalline chord echoes through the space, instantly dampening harsh background noise, shouted arguments, and clattering weapons into a distant, muffled whisper.
- Touch: Those within 15 feet experience an immediate drop in physical tension; clenched fists involuntarily loosen, rapid heart rates slow to a steady pace, and a gentle, temperate breeze brushes against the skin.
- Smell: The immediate environment is perfumed by a delicate scent of blooming grove flowers, sweet wood oils, and fresh rain on dry stone, completely masking acrid smells of sweat, smoke, or blood.
- Taste: Nearby individuals notice a soothing, clean sweetness on the breath, calming dry mouths and tense throats.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Aura of Profound Accord: Empaths and nearby creatures sense an overwhelming wave of peaceful intent and sacred balance radiating from the focus, making aggressive actions feel unnatural, disharmonious, and emotionally exhausting.
- Resonance of the Forgotten: Observers may experience a fleeting, poignant twinge of nostalgia or memory regarding someone they once left behind, creating momentary contemplation and emotional softness.
Positives
- Provides reliable manipulation of probability, allowing the wielder to reverse critical failures and force adversaries to reroll lethal strikes.
- Radiates a continuous 15-foot calming field that shields allies against fear, confusion, and hostile emotional effects.
- Grants a +2 AC abjuration ward by subtly turning hostile attack vectors into “abandoned intent.”
- Offers deep empathic insight into the true motives, emotional vulnerabilities, and deceit of opposing negotiators and adversaries.
- Enables powerful social disguise through the Visage of the Forsaken and provides symbolic divination insights into lost truths and future forks.
- Combines three distinct diplomatic, illusion, and probabilistic tools into a single lightweight handheld focus.
Negatives
- The glowing runes, shifting chrono-threads, and radiant crystal beam make complete visual stealth impossible while the item is active.
- The soothing harmonic chime and ambient resonance hum can alert guards or sound-sensitive entities in dead-silent environments.
- The emotional resonance can cause empathic bleed-through, leaving the wielder with a lingering sense of melancholy or nostalgia after prolonged use.
- Glimpsing unwalked futures and averted tragedies can induce short-term decision fatigue or hesitation if the wielder becomes overly fixated on branching timelines.
- Aggressive or bloodthirsty allies may feel their combat momentum slightly dampened by the pervasive aura of peace.

- Enchanting / Runecrafting: Skill Level 8
- Alchemy / Herbalism: Skill Level 8
- Temporal Lore / Occult Cartography: Skill Level 8
- Mind’s Eye (Active Focus / Identify): Skill Level 8
- Crafting Steps:
- Sanctification of the Chronotemporal Scriptorium: Seal the Chronotemporal Scriptorium to ensure no external timekeeping or temporal distortions interfere. Place the Glyph of the Unseen Fork within a shallow basin of distilled elemental water adjacent to the central crafting pedestal.
- Peacewood Frame and Setting Preparation: Using the artisan’s carving set, turn and hollow the Peacewood into a smooth, circular mirror frame. Inscribe continuous runes of peace and diplomatic accord around the outer perimeter using Diplomat’s Ink. Carve recessed mountings along the lower bezel for the central Harmony Crystal, the sapphire sliver, and the three soothing stones.
- Alchemical Mirror Cleansing and Etching: Cleanse the circular alchemical glass disc from Cosmetic 17 using a mixture of elemental water and half of the moonstone dust. Using the diamond chisel and black enchanted ink, engrave the reverse face with intricate motifs of wilting roses and retracting vines to anchor the resonance of forsaken intent.
- Alchemy of Serenity and Forsaken Resonance: In the alchemist’s cauldron, combine the wilted rose petals, remaining moonstone dust, essence of serenity, and elemental water. Simmer the mixture over a gentle flame, then bathe the glass disc and peacewood bezel, allowing the calming, melancholic solution to infuse the grain and glass pores.
- Elemental Steam Infusion: Combine the vials of elemental fire and remaining elemental water within the essence infuser to generate pressurized elemental steam. Direct the vapor across the glass and wooden housing to permanently bind the abjuration and illusion channels.
- Inscribing the Destiny Matrix: Lay the phase-parchment from the scrolls upon the rear backing of the mirror. Dip the lattice-tipped quill into the destiny-touched ink, carefully transcribing the probabilistic glyphs of fateful intervention. Between each transcribed rune, exhale across the breath mirror to redirect the breath of intent onto the ink, ensuring the text ripples with temporal potential.
- Chrono-Thread Binding: Take the golden thread of interwoven chrones and lash the inscribed phase-parchment, peacewood frame, and glass mirror together. Weave the thread through the carved channels around the outer bezel in a complex spiral pattern, knotting the ends around the sapphire sliver.
- Stone Embedding and Spirit Awaking: Set the Harmony Crystal, soothing stones, and sapphire sliver into their designated bezel sockets. Place the entire assembly into the enchantment kiln, suspend the Tier-3 magic crystal directly above, and expose the unit to soft magical flames. Channel pure mana into the crystal for thirty minutes while reciting the Litany of Unbroken Accord to awaken the druidic consciousness within the peacewood and fuse all three component matrices into a single handheld tool.
- Mind’s Eye Calibration: Remove the focus, place it upon royal blue velvet, and perform an active Mind’s Eye scan to verify that the sentient voice speaks clearly, the destiny-ink flows dynamically, the abjuration ward deflects strikes, and the mirror’s illusion field activates without distortion.
Weeping Glass, Tree That Did Not Strike, and Scroll of Unwalked Crossways
In the day-cycles before the salt-water knew the sky, when the stone mountains were still soft like wet river-dough and the ten-and-nine winds had not yet chosen which mouth to blow through, there sat a great silence upon the valley of the Red Hearth. In that valley, two great kings of iron and horn stood face-to-face. The first king was of the Iron-Grip, whose skin was covered in black rust and whose breath was like the grinding of millstones. The second king was of the Horned-Spear, whose eyes were full of boiling grease and whose knees had never touched the earth in kneeling.
Between their two great hordes of howling men lay forty leagues of red dust, where no weed would grow because too much blood had already been poured into the dirt. The iron swords were sharp enough to shave a spider’s eyelash, and the spear-points were dipped in the poison of the green swamp-snake. Both kings said with their mouths: “Tomorrow morning, when the white sun rises from the stone-crack, we shall cut every throat until the river runs thick as lard, and only one skull shall sit upon the bench.”
In the high grove where the trees do not grow thorns, there lived an arbiter whose name is written in the dead clay as Lyr-In-Of-The-Still-Tongue. This arbiter did not have armor of boiled ox-hide, nor did he carry an iron axe that splits the knee. In his meat-hands he held three sacred pieces of the old world that had never been joined together by fire.
The first was the Round Wood of the Grove That Weeps No Sap. It was carved from the heart of the mother-tree that had never felt the bite of an axe, and inside its grain lived the breath of the ancient peacemaker whose words could make the starving wolf sit beside the fat lamb. In the center of this wood rested the yellow stone of the quiet eye, which hummed whenever an angry thought was born within forty paces.
The second piece was the Cold Looking-Glass of the Abandoned Maiden. It had been made in the city of the high silver towers that sank beneath the sand. On its back were etched the five dead roses that drop their petals into the black water, and its glass was so cold that it absorbed the heat of any hand that touched it. When a man looked into this glass, he did not see his teeth or his hair; he saw the face of the mother he had left to starve, the friend he had pushed from the wagon, or the vow he had buried under a flat stone.
The third piece was the Long Skin of the Phase-Moth. It was a scroll sewn with the gold strings of the sun-eclipses, and its surface was covered in blue and purple ink that moved across the parchment like water-bugs upon a puddle. This scroll did not speak of the sun that had risen, nor of the rain that was falling; it held the five-and-one twists of things that had not happened yet—the road where the horse did not stumble, the hour where the arrow missed the eye, and the word that was swallowed before the knife was drawn.
Lyr-In sat upon the flat rock of the Three Divides and said to the three things: “The iron kings will break the bowl of the world tomorrow. The sword cannot cut the sword without making two sharp pieces of sorrow. We must make the one eye that looks through the anger of men.”
He went into the deep stone chamber where time does not walk straight. He built a small fire of cedar-gum and dried lavender leaves that had been gathered during the dark moon.
First, he took the Round Wood and smoothed its belly with the diamond-stone until it was shaped like a shield for a small child. He carved along its edge the continuous line of the Long Accord, using the ink that makes the heart grow soft.
Then, he took the Cold Looking-Glass and cleansed its face in three bowls of pure mountain-dew. He laid the cold glass upon the warm belly of the Peacewood. The wood groaned with a sound like a waking ox, for the wood was full of the warmth of life, and the glass was full of the chill of forgotten things. But Lyr-In took the golden strings of the chrono-moth and bound them three hundred times around the wood and the glass, tying the knots with the words of the Unseen Fork until the cold and the warm became one single breath.
Lastly, he laid the Long Skin of the Phase-Moth upon the back of the wood. With a quill made from the bone of an owl, he drew the blue destiny-ink through the gold strings and onto the silver etchings of the five dead roses. He breathed upon the glass through the breath-mirror three times, speaking the name of the road that nobody chose.
When the last breath touched the glass, the three pieces fused together with a loud, ringing chime, like a silver bell struck beneath deep water. The yellow stone on the rim ignited with a golden sun-glow, the sapphire sliver flashed with the blue of the lightning-sky, and across the mirror’s face, the destiny-ink began to spin in circles of glowing fire.
The object was no longer three things. It had become the Mirror-Focus 491, the one true eye of the weaving path.
When the dawn broke over the Red Hearth, the two armies stood ready to crash together like two mountains of iron. The King of the Iron-Grip raised his two-handed cleaver, and the King of the Horned-Spear notched his black bone-arrow to his ear.
Lyr-In walked out alone into the dust between the two lines of spears. He did not run, and he did not duck his head. He held the mirror-focus high in his left hand, turning its reflective glass toward the sun.
The King of the Horned-Spear let fly his black arrow straight at Lyr-In’s throat.
The arrow flew with the sound of a tearing cloth, but when it was one thumb-width from the peacewood rim, the mirror-focus gave a sharp, vibrating hum. The destiny-ink upon the bezel flared with bright violet fire. The arrow did not hit; the air bent like water around an oar, treating the flight of the arrow as an “abandoned deed” that had already died yesterday. The black arrow turned sideways and clattered harmlessly into the red sand.
Then the King of the Iron-Grip roared with a throat full of bile and charged upon his heavy war-lizard, swinging his iron cleaver to split Lyr-In from crown to groin.
Lyr-In did not step backward. He looked into the yellow Harmony Crystal and whispered the ancient peace-syllable.
A great wave of lavender-scented steam and soft, harmonic resonance exploded outward from the mirror in a circle of thirty paces. The iron cleaver did not strike. When the King of the Iron-Grip swung his blade, the mirror reflected not his armored body, but the visage of his own younger brother whom he had left behind in the salt-mines thirty winters before to steal the iron crown for himself.
The King of the Iron-Grip stopped. His arms became heavy as wet lead. Tears of boiling grease ran down his rusted iron mask. He fell to his knees in the dust, clutching his chest, weeping aloud: “Brother, the bread was yours, and I ate it in the dark.”
Lyr-In then turned the glass face toward the King of the Horned-Spear and the ten thousand warriors standing behind him.
The mirror hummed with a sound like a mother singing over a cradle. The blue destiny-ink projected a vast, shimmering web of golden threads across the entire battlefield, touching the forehead of every spear-man and archer. In their minds, every man saw two paths opening before his feet: the first was the path of the sword, where their wives would weep over empty boots and their sons would chew dry roots in the burned fields; the second was the path of the unmade war, where the barley grew tall and the bread was shared upon the wooden table.
The hands of the ten thousand men grew numb. The spears slipped from their fingers and stuck upright in the red dust. The archers unstrung their bows, and the war-lizards lay down their heads upon the sand, purring like sleeping cats.
The King of the Horned-Spear dropped his bow into the dirt, walked across the thirty paces of red sand, and knelt before the weeping King of the Iron-Grip. He reached out his meat-hand, covered in horn-rings, and lifted the iron king from the earth.
“The ledger is closed,” said the Horned King. “We have left too many behind to fill the ditches with our own children.”
Lyr-In lowered the mirror-focus. The golden threads slowly faded back into the wood; the shifting runes stilled beneath the clear protective glaze; and the Peacewood cooled in his palm, resting with the gentle heartbeat of the unbroken grove.
The two kings signed the Great Accord of the Red Hearth upon a sheet of clean sheepskin, using the back of an iron shield as their table. No blood was spilled upon the dust that day, and the red valley was renamed the Field of the Clear Looking-Glass.
From that sun-cycle to this, the mirror-focus has wandered through the divided kingdoms of Saṃsāra, carried only by those whose hands are too wise to draw the sword and whose hearts are large enough to hold the weight of what might have been.
Moral of the Story
The sharpest blade can only cut what stands before it, but the soul that holds the mirror of past sorrow and weaves the quiet threads of tomorrow can turn the fiercest wrath into understanding; for true power is not the strength to break an enemy, but the courage to show him the brother he forgot he loved.
