Lore: Crafted by ancient merchant-kahunas who navigated the ocean trade routes of Saṃsāra, this artifact was created to ensure fair transactions, binding agreements, and prosperous exchanges between distant island tribes. It is believed that the spirit of a tide-keeper was bound into a polished, golden-sheen cowrie shell to act as an impartial referee during high-stakes bartering. Traditionally handed to traveling peddlers, dockmasters, and master negotiators, the artifact reveals hidden value in mundane goods, deters fraudulent pricing, and rewards true mutual compromise.

The avatar receives advantage on skill checks made to appraise items, detect counterfeit coins or forged documents, evaluate local market trends, or haggle for goods.
- Equitable Shield: Whenever the avatar takes physical damage from an incoming attack, the magical matrix within the copper filigree absorbs a small fraction of the kinetic energy, converting it into a protective energy buffer. This buffer prevents the avatar’s coin purses, satchels, and carried trade items from being stolen, severed, or damaged during combat.
Multiple Activable Magics
- Pact of the Fair Deal: By using 1 Action to hold the shell between both hands during a negotiation, the avatar releases an aura of commercial trust. The shell projects a warm amber light in a 10-foot radius that grants the avatar advantage on Charisma (Persuasion or Barter) checks made to negotiate merchant prices, arrange trades, or secure discounts for 1 minute. This ability can be used three times per day.
- Cleansing Compromise: By using 1 Action to touch the shell against an ally, the avatar invokes a calming spirit of reconciliation. The target hears a clear coin-clink chime in their mind, instantly removing one of the following conditions: Frightened, Dazed, or Shaken, while granting them a +1 bonus to their next social interaction check. This ability can be used once per day.

Shops and Commerce for Kahuna 419 of the Golden Cowrie (Venues and Transactions for the Item)
- Merchant Bazaars, Trading Guildhalls, and Mercantile Exchanges: Situated in the grand commercial hubs, port plazas, and indoor bazaars of major trading cities. These venues cater to caravans, maritime traders, and registered peddlers looking to secure fair deals and protect trade assets. Purchasing the cowrie involves negotiating with a guild quartermaster or senior merchant master. When selling the shell here, the merchant evaluates the shell’s luster and copper wiring, depositing the funds directly into the avatar’s World Bank account per standard mercantile protocol, reduced by 10% times the avatar’s tier level.
- Purchase Cost: 10 Silver (or 2 Electrum)
- Sale Payout: 9 Silver (deposited directly into the World Bank account for a Tier 1 avatar)
- Merchant Guild Outposts and Peddler Caravans: Located along well-traveled trade roads, frontier outposts, and guild-operated waystations. Guild members enjoy preferential pricing when trading in commercial aids and appraisal tools. Accessing these stores requires active registration with a local or international Merchant Guild. Selling the item logs the transaction into the guild’s trade ledger.
- Purchase Cost with Guild Discount: 9 Silver (reflecting a 10% discount off the suggested 10 Silver base value for a Tier 1 member)
- Sale Payout to Guild Master: 9 Silver (transferred directly to the World Bank)
- Dockside Exchange Counters and Harbor Pawn Shops: Found along busy wharves, coastal fish markets, and island docks where maritime merchants trade raw goods and local currencies. Buying the cowrie involves direct counter-haggling with independent brokers. Selling the shell yields immediate physical coin, though local pawn brokers adjust their offers based on current liquidity and regional market fluctuations.
- Purchase Cost: 11 Silver (or 1 Gold 1 Silver)
- Sale Payout: 8 Silver 5 Copper in physical coin
- Underground Smugglers’ Markets and Black-Market Fences: Tucked away in unpatrolled docks, subterranean vaults, or pirate-governed free ports. Fences deal in contraband, untaxed trade goods, and unregistered magical artifacts, operating strictly in cash. Transactions bypass the World Bank completely and require physical coin exchanged directly between parties.
- Purchase Cost: 15 Silver (or 1 Gold 5 Silver, due to black-market demand for appraisal and forgery-detection relics)
- Sale Payout: 10 Silver in physical gold coin (black-market buyers offer higher rates to acquire tools that assist in evaluating stolen merchandise)
Roleplay Application of Kahuna 419 of the Golden Cowrie Across Environments (Combat and Tactical Roleplay in Varied Environments)
- Grand Bazaars and High-Stakes Auction Houses: Within crowded indoor markets, silk-draped trading floors, and bustling guildhalls where fortunes change hands over counters.
- Defensive Roleplay: An aggressive rival merchant attempts to intimidate the avatar into accepting a predatory loan contract, using shouting and physical threats. As the rival slams their hand onto the desk, the Equitable Shield passive triggers. The amber aperture of the cowrie hums warmly, absorbing the kinetic shock through its copper filigree and forming a subtle protective field around the avatar’s satchel and coin pouch, keeping their contracts and currency completely secure.
- Offensive Roleplay: Facing a stubborn auctioneer who refuses to lower a artificially inflated reserve price on a critical quest item, the avatar activates Pact of the Fair Deal. The player narrates holding the golden shell between both palms, unleashing a warm amber glow across the counter. The ambient aura instills a spirit of commercial reason, granting the avatar the exact leverage needed to negotiate a fair discount.
- Rain-Slicked Harbor Docks and Customs Checkpoints: Along bustling coastal wharves, customs houses, and cargo warehouses slick with sea spray and rain.
- Defensive Roleplay: A corrupt dock official attempts to seize the avatar’s trade goods under the guise of an “impoundment inspection,” grabbing for their crate ties. The Equitable Shield passive repels the official’s grabbing fingers, preventing the ties from snapping or being severed, while the avatar’s Merchant’s Instinct allows them to immediately call out the official’s forged seizure paperwork with absolute precision.
- Offensive Roleplay: Spotting a weary crewmate collapsing under the stress of an extortionate bribe demanded by harbor guards, the avatar uses Cleansing Compromise. The player touches the amber shell against the ally’s shoulder, releasing a clear coin-clink chime. The soothing note instantly clears the ally’s Dazed and Shaken condition, restoring their composure to help navigate the standoff.
- Dust-Choked Caravan Routes and Sun-Baked Desert Waystations: Across scorching trade roads, oasis markets, and remote border outposts where merchants are vulnerable to ambush.
- Defensive Roleplay: During a sudden ambush by desert bandits trying to slice open cargo saddlebags, an enemy blade slashes toward the avatar’s hip. The Equitable Shield converts the incoming blade strike into a harmless amber spark, protecting the avatar’s coin purse and personal inventory from being cut loose or stolen mid-fight.
- Offensive Roleplay: Confronting a shady fence at an oasis waystation who is holding captured travel supplies hostage, the avatar activates Pact of the Fair Deal. The player describes raising the shell, casting a warm amber light over the campfire. The magic soothes the fence’s greed, opening a peaceful window to strike an equitable trade deal before weapons are drawn.
- Murky Subterranean Black Markets and Smugglers’ Vaults: Inside damp sewer vaults, hidden tavern cellars, and unpatrolled underground ruins where illicit trade occurs in darkness.
- Defensive Roleplay: A subterranean cutpurse attempts to slip a poison-coated needle into the avatar’s palm while exchanging dark-market coins. The shell’s Merchant’s Instinct passive alerts the avatar to the counterfeit weight of the coins, while the Equitable Shield deflects the subtle needle prick, protecting the avatar from contact toxins.
- Offensive Roleplay: When an ally is overwhelmed by fear after being cornered by black-market enforcers in a dim tunnel, the avatar uses Cleansing Compromise. The player steps forward and taps the cowrie shell against the ally’s arm. The chiming coin sound echoes through the vault, instantly purging the ally’s Frightened state and boosting their focus for the upcoming negotiation or escape.

Crafting Recipe: Kahuna 419 of the Golden Cowrie
Materials Needed
- 1 intact Golden Cowrie Shell (harvested from warm coastal reef waters)
- 1 strip of refined Copper Wire (drawn and coiled for filigree wrap)
- 1 length of braided Palm-Leaf Fiber (for the hanging lanyard)
- 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized catalyst to power the commercial matrix)
- 2 drams of Fluid Collector-harvested Tree Sap (hardwood resin to bind the wire to the shell)
- 1 vial of enchanted Amber-Dust Ink (used to etch the balance and coin runes)
Tools Required
- Fine jeweler’s chisels, wire-cutters, and copper-bending pliers
- A specialized Hand-Held Attunement Workbench or Jeweler’s Anvil
- A Fluid Collector (for gathering pure tree sap resin during preparation)
- Precision wire-soldering iron and micro-engraving needles
- Fine polishing cloths and pumice powder
Skill Requirements
- Jewelry Crafting / Metalworking Skill: Level 6 or higher (Base skill 5 + 1 for Tier 1 crafting target)
- Magical Crafting / Rune Inscription Skill: Level 6 or higher
- Crafter Tier: Tier 1 Avatar or higher
Crafting Steps
- Preparing the Cowrie Shell: Clean and polish the golden cowrie shell using pumice powder until the outer surface displays a warm, mirror-like gloss. Inspect the inner aperture for structural integrity.
- Embedding the Catalyst: Insert the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into the central aperture of the shell, securing it firmly within the interior cavity using a drop of tree sap resin.
- Wrapping the Copper Filigree: Using copper-bending pliers, coil refined copper wire tightly around the outer rim and dorsal ridge of the shell, creating a protective cage with two attachment loops near the top.
- Inscribing the Trade Runes: Using micro-engraving needles, etch balance scales, coin icons, and intertwined hands along the copper wire casing and shell spine. Fill the carved grooves with enchanted amber-dust ink.
- Sealing and Binding: Coat the filigree connections and rune etchings with harvested tree sap resin to seal the assembly against wear, tarnish, and environmental corrosion.
- Braiding the Lanyard: Weave three strands of palm-leaf fiber into a strong, flexible cord. Thread the braided cord through the top loops of the copper casing and tie a double-fisherknot.
- Final Attunement and Commercial Test: Place the completed pendant onto the attunement workbench and perform a 10-minute binding ritual. Channel 1 point of Mana into the crystal catalyst while tapping two copper coins together. Roll a d20 to test matrix stability: a roll of 2 or higher successfully binds the bargaining properties to the shell, while a roll of 1 cracks the cowrie shell and destroys the components.
Great Golden Cowrie of Just Trade
In the long-ago cycles of the yellow sun, before the big ships with three tall trees of cloth did sail upon the wide blue salt-water, there lived in the sandy village a man named Kahuna of the Fair Count. He was not a warrior who did swing the heavy stone club, nor did he possess twenty canoes or fifty fat pigs, but his eyes were sharp like the eye of the sea-hawk when it looks upon the small fish in the shallows.
In those times, the men of the island markets were filled with much greed in their bellies. When a man from the palm forest brought ten yams to the beach to trade for three dried fish, the beach-man would say with a loud voice, “Nay! Thy yams are small like the pebble of the river! I shall give thee only one half of a tail of a fish!” And so the forest-man would go home with a crying stomach, and the beach-man would laugh into his beard. There was much spitting upon the ground, and many men did draw their stone knives over the price of a single coconut.
The High Chief of the Great Lagoon called Kahuna to his mat of banana leaves and spoke with a big wind from his nose: “O Kahuna, the market of my people is like the pit of the snapping turtles! The strong men do rob the weak men, and the traders do give copper painted like gold! Make for me a thing that tells the true worth of the pig and the yam, or I shall make thee dig holes in the mud until thy arms fall off!”
Kahuna walked along the white reef where the shallow water meets the deep green wave for nine suns and nine moons. He looked into the coral gardens where the water is warm like the soup in the pot. There he found a little shell of the sea-snail, smooth like the egg of the turtle, shining with the bright yellow color of the morning sun.
Kahuna took the yellow shell unto his small hut. He took also a thin thread of reddish metal from the mountain rock and the dry skin of the palm leaf. He sat upon a flat stone and wrapped the reddish metal thread around the belly of the yellow shell, like the vines that wrap around the trunk of the breadfruit tree. He spoke the ancient words of the tide-spirits, which are translated poorly into our books as: “O Snail of the Deep Water, let the coin be weighed with truth, but do not let the hands of the buyer and the seller become red with anger!”
He placed the yellow shell upon his palm and did tap two small copper rings together over its head.
Clink-clink!
A warm light like the burning torch came out from the mouth of the yellow shell! It was not a hot fire that burns the skin, but a pleasant warmness like the sun upon the back after swimming in the cold river. The light spread across the wooden table like honey pouring from a broken jar.
Kahuna walked into the grand market-place where a big trader was trying to sell a rotten log of sandalwood to a young farmer for three heavy bags of silver coins. Kahuna did step between them and held the yellow shell in his fingers. He did tap the reddish metal wire against the shell.
Clink-clink!
Lo! The warm yellow light did fall upon the log of wood! The log did show its rotten heart to all the people, and the three bags of silver did shine with their true mark! The big trader did drop his head with much shame in his neck, and the young farmer did jump with great gladness in his knees. The people did shout with loud voices, saying, “The shell of Kahuna sees through the lie like the clean water sees the white sand!”
For fifty summers, Kahuna walked from the docks to the high mountain markets. Whenever two kings or two merchants did sit upon the grass to trade forty horses for eighty barrels of sweet wine, Kahuna did place the shell upon the woven mat between them. The heart of greed did grow soft in their chests, the lies did melt away like ice upon the black stone, and both sides did shake hands with big smiles, leaving no blood upon the grass.
When Kahuna became very old and his knees were stiff like dry bamboo, he gave the golden shell to his grandson, who was named Kahuna the Trader. But the ancient translation says that the grandson was foolish and had a narrow mind. He took the golden shell into the dark cave of a robber chief, wanting to use the shell to find where the chief had buried ten chests of stolen gold so he could take them all for himself in the night.
When the foolish grandson did press the shell against the dirt of the cave, the yellow shell did not give the warm honey-light. It made a loud noise like a falling pile of copper pans! Clatter-clang-shatter! The robber chief and his twenty angry men did wake up from their sleep with big clubs in their hands! The grandson was forced to jump into the dark river without his sandals, and the golden shell slipped from his fingers, sinking into the deep mud of the underground water.
Many hundreds of winters passed while the shell lay in the dark mud, until a deep-sea diver did pull it out from the river-mouth during a great flood. It was cleaned with fine oils and brought to the Big Exchange of the Merchant Cities, where the scribes wrote down its history upon the calf-skin paper. But all who buy and sell upon the markets of Saṃsāra still remember the yellow cowrie of Kahuna that made the trade clean and the pouch safe.
Moral of the Story: He who uses the scale of justice to seek a fair portion for all men shall never go hungry, but he who turns the tool of truth into a key for plunder shall awaken the guards and lose even his sandals in the dark.
