Lore
In the intricate society of Saṃsāra, where the Industrial Age meets high magic, many find themselves confined by the invisible bars of social expectation or the mundane grind of factory labor. The Uncaged 812 of Aesthetic Appreciation was first conceptualized by a Technomancer who spent decades observing the rhythmic beauty of steam-powered gears and the vibrant flow of magical circuits. This mantle is crafted for those who find liberation not through violence, but through the profound recognition of beauty in the world around them. It serves as a reminder that understanding the “true nature” of a cage—whether it be a literal prison or a mental block—often begins with appreciating the craftsmanship and illusions that sustain it. Traditionally, these are gifted to Tier 1 Isekai characters who have just arrived in Saṃsāra, helping them navigate the overwhelming sensory input of skyscrapers and flying cities by focusing on the artistic details of their new reality.
Detailed Stats
- Item Level: Tier 1.
- Rarity: Common.
- Slot: Shoulder Slot.
- Armor Check (AC): 2 (Within the limit of 3 per item level).
- Resilience: 10.
- Item Health Points: 32 (Calculated as Resilience 10 plus maximum Tier 1 character HP of 22).
- Attunement Type: Simple (1 minute).
- Weight: 3 pounds.
Skills Gained While Openly Worn
- Artistic Discernment: While wearing this badge of appreciation openly, the character gains 1 point of temporary training in Insight, specifically for identifying the “magical composition” and “illusions” of objects or structures.
- Eloquent Praise: The character receives 1 point of temporary training in Persuasion, which is active only when they are vocally admiring the aesthetic quality of a person, place, or item.
Passive Magic
- Mind’s Eye Clarity: When the possessor examines an object for its beauty, the Mind’s Eye reveals the name of the artisan and the primary materials used (e.g., copper, magic crystals) without requiring an active “identify” action.
- Aura of the Spectator: If the wearer remains stationary and non-aggressive while admiring a scene, they are 10% less likely to be noticed by feral beasts, who perceive the avatar as a harmless part of the environment.
- Lightened Burden: When active, the mantle subtly manipulates the air currents around the avatar’s backpack, reducing the perceived weight of mundane gear by 2 pounds (actual weight remains unchanged).
Active Magic
- Gilded Glance (Normal Chant): As an action, the wearer speaks a flourish of praise toward a mechanical or magical lock. This grants Advantage on the next skill check made to “physically break a lock or barrier” or unravel its magical bonds.
- Breath of the Open Sky (Silent Chant): The wearer can immediately increase their movement speed by 10 feet for 6 seconds to escape a confined space. Because this is a silent chant, its power is slightly dampened, resulting in 25% less efficiency in secondary effects.
- Mirror of True Self (Ritual Chant): By reciting a poem of appreciation for at least 6 seconds (Ritual), the wearer can dispel a Tier 1 illusion within 10 feet that is masking the true form of an object or “cage”.

Acquisition and Commerce of the Uncaged 812 of Aesthetic Appreciation
The acquisition of items in Saṃsāra occurs through combat rewards, quest rewards, or purchase at a vendor. The Uncaged 812 of Aesthetic Appreciation may also be obtained when an avatar is successfully possessed, as it would be among the items the avatar held at the time of possession. Because this is a Tier 1 item of common rarity, it is also a potential component of the “Starting Avatar Kit” given to characters who lack essential gear upon their first possession.
Methods of Acquisition
- Combat Rewards: If a Tier 1 (possessed) avatar or foe wearing this mantle is defeated, the avatar vaporizes into sparks, leaving behind the item along with a soul crystal. If the foe is non-possessed, the mantle remains with the corpse for the character to claim.
- Quest Rewards: Local monarchies or city Mayors may grant this mantle as a reward for successful tasks or service to an island country.
- Possession: A soul newly arriving in Saṃsāra may find themselves inhabiting an avatar that already owns the mantle, as the character remembers the host’s memories and instincts upon merging.
Commercial Environments and Market Values
Saṃsāra operates as a “sellers’ market” under the principle of “buyer beware,” meaning there is no fixed price per item or tier. Price varies globally based on availability and the cost of access.
- Guild Master Outfitters: Located in cities with over five thousand residents, these shops are often connected to the local workers’ union. They sell mundane and common gear to qualifying adventurers.
- Estimated Buying Cost: 40 to 60 Silver.
- Estimated Selling Value: 15 to 25 Silver.
- Artisan Weaveries in Central Cities: In the central city of an island nation, specialized artisans might sell versions of this mantle with specific “originally made by” tags. These locations often charge higher fees due to their proximity to the seat of government.
- Estimated Buying Cost: 8 to 12 Electrum.
- Estimated Selling Value: 4 to 6 Electrum.
- Rural Traveling Wagons: In rural areas or towns with fewer than five thousand residents, traveling peddlers may offer the item. While rural areas pay no taxes or fees, the lack of supply can drive the “sellers’ market” price higher if the merchant is aware of a buyer’s need.
- Estimated Buying Cost: 700 to 900 Copper.
- Estimated Selling Value: 2 to 4 Silver.
Transaction Considerations
- World Bank Exchange: Because coins have significant weight unless stored in Extradimensional Storage, many traders prefer players use their World Bank accounts for transactions. The World Bank charges a 1% fee for exchanges or transactions.
- Taxation: Goods sold in a Central City, State City, or Town are taxed at 3% of their value. Additionally, foreign citizens must pay double the passage fees through city gates (1 silver per individual) to reach these markets.
- Repair Status: Items with half their HP or less are considered broken and lose their function. Shopkeepers in Saṃsāra generally require an item be repaired before it can be sold at its standard value.
Tactical Roleplay of the Uncaged 812 of Aesthetic Appreciation in Diverse Environments
- Roleplay of Defense in Designated Safe Areas
- In guarded areas or rooms rented from the monarchy, the Armor Check (AC) of this item is tripled.
- An avatar might roleplay this by leaning into the “Aura of the Spectator” while admiring a well-crafted statue in a city park, appearing so harmlessly appreciative of the art that potential attackers or pickpockets ignore them.
- The increased AC represents the heightened security of the area, and the wearer might roleplay a sense of total security while focusing on the intricate details of a royal fountain.
- Roleplay of Defense in Somewhat Safe Areas
- Within walled towns or larger cities, the AC of the mantle is doubled.
- A character could roleplay this by walking through a steam-powered district, using their “Artistic Discernment” to identify the mechanical beauty of the factories, which in turn keeps them alert to environmental hazards.
- The user might describe the mantle’s silk stiffening slightly as a passive defensive measure against the jostling crowds of a metropolis.
- Roleplay of Defense in Normal Areas
- In the majority of the world, the AC remains its base value of 2.
- During a wilderness trek, the character might roleplay checking the “originally made by” tags on their gear to maintain a calm mental state, using the mantle as a psychological anchor against the stress of travel.
- The “Lightened Burden” passive magic would be roleplayed as the character noticing the air currents shifting around their backpack, allowing them to focus more on the landscape and less on their physical fatigue.
- Roleplay of Defense in Unsafe and Deathly Areas
- In unsafe areas, the AC is cut in half, while in deathly areas, AC is cut completely and every attack hits.
- The wearer might roleplay a frantic use of the “Breath of the Open Sky” silent chant, describing the mantle’s copper circuits glowing dim purple as they sprint away from a lethal threat in a dark cave system.
- The character may express a desperate “Aesthetic Appreciation” for the terrifying geometry of a monster’s fangs or the structural integrity of a ruin to maintain their “Mind’s Eye Clarity” even as their physical defenses fail.
- Roleplay of Offense through Identification
- The “Mind’s Eye Clarity” passive allows the wearer to roleplay a tactical examination of an opponent’s equipment.
- The user could describe focusing on the “Aesthetic Appreciation” of a foe’s armor to identify the quality of the magic crystalline cells powering it, searching for a flaw in the craftsmanship.
- This understanding of the “true nature” of the foe’s gear can be roleplayed as providing verbal clues to party members about where to strike.
- Roleplay of Offense through Liberation Rituals
- Using the “Gilded Glance” active magic, the character roleplays a vocal flourish of praise directed at a magical lock or cage.
- The player might narrate their character appreciating the “Aesthetic Appreciation” of the lock’s complexity while simultaneously unraveling its magical bonds with a spell.
- Success would be roleplayed as the “transformation” of the cage from a solid barrier into a broken work of art, allowing a long-imprisoned entity to be released.
- Roleplay of Offense through Social Manipulation
- The “Eloquent Praise” skill allows for offensive roleplay in social or political intrigue.
- An avatar might “attack” an opponent’s reputation in a royal court by using “Aesthetic Appreciation” to praise a rival’s gear, subtly shifting the balance of power in the magical realm.
- This is roleplayed as a “confronting of fears and illusions,” using the mantle’s magic to make the user’s words seem more insightful and persuasive to those in power.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective
- The wearer experiences an immediate cooling sensation across their shoulders, which provides stability to their core body temperature during environmental changes.
- A calming hum is felt within the Mind’s Eye, functioning as a mental filter that organizes sensory overload into clear, quantifiable data.
- The user’s visual field becomes more saturated, with distinct colors and the deep purple ultraviolet signature of magical illusions or items being highlighted.
- A profound sense of mental and physical clarity occurs, which actively dissolves any confusion caused by external illusions or lingering fatigue.
- Observer’s Perspective
- Observers see the light-gray silk mantle emit a rhythmic pulse of deep purple light as the magic circuits and embedded crystals engage.
- A subtle scent of ozone combined with fresh ink is noticeable to those standing in close proximity to the mantle.
- Beings with True Sight witness a vibrant ultraviolet aura that envelopes the mantle and radiates out to 10 feet, revealing the local flow of magic.
- Local shadows are pushed back slightly by the soft, steady luminescence generated by the activated gear.
- Positives
- The user receives an instantaneous, intuitive understanding of the complex artistry and craftsmanship of nearby magical or mechanical objects.
- The mantle serves as a strong psychological anchor, providing defense against terror and despair in high-danger environments.
- The wearer gains immediate insight into the “true nature” of their surroundings, including identifying structural weaknesses in cages or the spells behind an illusion.
- Negatives
- The distinctive purple glow and ozone scent increase the difficulty of remaining unnoticed by feral beasts in dark areas unless utilizing the “Aura of the Spectator” defense.
- The item’s specific “Aesthetic Appreciation” magical signature can be detected by high-tier magic users from up to 100 feet away.
- Prolonged use of the deep purple Mind’s Eye visualization may lead to sensory fatigue or a sense of aesthetic detachment once the item is unattuned.
Recipe for the Uncaged 812 of Aesthetic Appreciation
Materials Needed
- Light-Gray Silk Cloth: One square yard of premium-grade, non-magical silk is required for the base fabric of the mantle.
- Fine Copper Magic Circuits: Three meters of thin, conductive copper wiring designed to be steam-pressed into the fabric to serve as the conduit for magical flow.
- Magic Crystal Shards: Five grams of crushed Tier 1 magic crystals are needed to act as the catalyst and battery for the arcane effects.
- Enchanted Thread: One spool of thread infused with microscopic crystalline material for the structural and magical bonding of the mantle’s components.
- Alchemical Solder: A small amount of alchemical adhesive used to permanently secure the copper circuits to the silk substrate.
Tools Required
- Steam-Powered Loom: This mechanical device is used to precisely weave the copper circuits into the silk fibers under pressure.
- Fine Solder Pen: A hand-held tool for making delicate connections between circuit junctions and the magic crystal shards.
- Jeweler’s Loupe or Mind’s Eye Focus: Essential for visualizing the microscopic magical pathways and ensuring there are no disruptions in the weave.
- Arcane Infusion Chamber: A small, steam-driven vessel used to heat and bind the crystal shards directly to the copper pathways.
Skill Requirements
- Alchemical Crafting: Proficiency is necessary to handle and bind the magic crystal shards without causing a catastrophic failure.
- Magical Crafting: Required to imbue the finished mantle with the specific passive and active magical properties.
- Tailoring or Weaving Training: At least 1 point of trained skill is needed to ensure the garment is properly formatted for the shoulder slot.
- Mind’s Eye Literacy: The ability to “identify” and calibrate the magical resonance of the components during the assembly process.
Crafting Steps
- Pattern Preparation: Cut and hem the light-gray silk into the specific draped mantle pattern intended for a Tier 1 shoulder slot.
- Circuit Integration: Utilize the steam-powered loom to press the fine copper magic circuits into the silk according to the pre-designed aesthetic pattern.
- Crystal Seeding: Carefully apply the alchemical solder to the designated circuit nodes and place the magic crystal shards upon them using the solder pen.
- Arcane Bonding: Place the mantle into the arcane infusion chamber and subject it to a high-pressure burst of elemental steam to fuse the crystals and circuits into a single functional unit.
- Imbuement Chanting: While the mantle is still radiating heat, perform the necessary “Normal” or “Ritual” chants of Aesthetic Appreciation to store the active spells within the item.
- Final Calibration: Examine the completed item through the Mind’s Eye to confirm the item health points are set correctly and that the “Aura of the Spectator” passive is active.
Un-Boxed 812 Great Eye-Pleasing
In the times before the times, when the dirt-rock of Saṃsāra was heavy with the angry cloud-water and the many shouting hammers of the builders, there was a man named Kaelen. Kaelen was of the tier of the strings. He pushed the strings over and under. He did not fight with the sharp metal sticks of the blood-makers. He watched the great time-spinning-wheels of the loud metal-smoke cities. He looked at the teeth of the metal wheels eating each other and he felt the great chest-water of the good feelings. He saw the unseen lightning running in the veins of the tall stone-trees. He said to his own brain-meat, “The wheels are not a box of sad working. The wheels are a beautiful dance of the heavy iron.”
Kaelen the string-tier wanted to make a skin for the shoulders that could teach the eye-balls to see the dance of the iron. He took the spit-hair of the gray leaf-eating worms. He made the spit-hair flat and soft. Then he took the red dirt-metal, the copper, and he stretched it until it was thinner than the legs of the biting-flies. He pushed the red dirt-metal into the gray worm-skin. He used the angry cloud-water, the steam, to press it very hard so it would not fall out. Then he took the purple stones that hold the magic-sickness of the feral meat-walkers. He crushed the purple stones into small sand. He put the purple sand onto the red dirt-metal. The skin became awake. It hummed like the happy bees that make the sweet mouth-water.
But Kaelen the string-tier could not make the skin sing the loud songs of the open places. He carried the skin to the High Teacher Elara of the High Winds. Master Elara looked at the skin with her eye that sits inside the brain-meat, the eye of the mind. She saw it was a good making, but it needed the breath of the sky without ceilings. Elara pushed the hot cloud-water and the unseen lightning together. She did the long mouth-noises of the old rituals. She told the skin to always look at the shapes of the world and say, “This is a very good shape of much beauty.” She made the skin into the Un-Boxed Number Eight Hundreds and One Ten and Two.
Soon, a fresh soul fell from the sky-water of the sleeping dead. This soul landed in a meat-vessel of the first counting-tier. The soul had the sickness of the fresh brain that forgets the old days. The soul walked into the loud metal-smoke city and the eye-balls of the soul were hurt by the tall stone-trees and the shouting hammers. The soul felt trapped in a heavy box of loud noises and bad smells. The soul found the gray worm-skin with the purple sand. The soul put the skin upon the joining of the arms and the neck.
Suddenly, the eye that sits inside the brain-meat became very clear. The soul looked at the loud metal-smoke city and saw the name of Kaelen written in the unseen lightning. The soul saw the red dirt-metal and the purple sand of the city’s making. The soul did not feel the heavy box of loud noises anymore. The soul felt the beautiful dance of the iron. The bag of carrying on the soul’s back felt as if it had eaten the floating-air, becoming lighter by the weight of two river-stones.
The soul walked into the dark danger-places where the defense-numbers are chopped into two small halves. There, a great beast of the feral mind was sleeping on the floor-dirt. The beast had teeth like broken glass and claws like the knives of the butchers. The soul did not run in fear. The soul stood very still, like a forgotten tree of the forest. The soul looked at the beast and thought with the brain-meat, “The shape of the teeth is a very good shape. The scales of the beast are a beautiful danger.” Because the soul stood still and thought the beautiful thoughts, the skin pushed a cloud of boring-nothing over the soul. The feral beast opened its eye-balls, looked at the soul, and saw only a piece of the wall. The beast went back to its sleep-breathing.
Then, the soul walked deeper and found a companion-person. The companion-person was locked inside a box of shiny yellow metal. The box had many teeth and invisible strings of bad magic holding it closed. The soul did not hit the box with a sharp metal stick. The soul looked at the box with the eyes of the aesthetic. The soul saw the beautiful making of the shiny yellow box. The soul opened the mouth-hole and threw the golden eye-water of praise. The soul said loud words, “The one who made this box has very smart hands. The teeth of this box are like the stars of the night-sky. It is a masterpiece of the holding-magic.” This was the normal mouth-noise of the Gilded Glance.
Because the soul spoke the good words to the box, the unseen lightning in the box became happy and confused. The box forgot it was a cage. The soul touched the box, and the heavy iron bonds fell away like dry leaves in the cold-time. The companion-person was un-boxed and walked into the open air.
But the falling of the yellow metal made a loud shouting noise against the floor-dirt. The feral beast of the broken-glass teeth woke up. It was very angry at the noise. The beast ran to bite the meat of the soul. The soul closed the mouth-hole tight and thought the quiet thoughts of the wind that runs without legs. This was the silent mouth-noise of the Breath of the Open Sky. The red dirt-metal on the gray worm-skin glowed with the dark purple light. The legs of the soul became like the frightened water-fish. The soul ran away ten foot-lengths faster in the six heart-beats of the turning circle. The beast bit only the empty air where the soul used to be.
When they were in the safe places of the guards, where the defense-numbers are multiplied by three, the soul and the companion-person rested their meat-vessels. The soul looked at the companion-person. The companion-person was wearing a false face of bad magic, an illusion of a sad monster that hid their true meat. The soul did the long mouth-noise of the Mirror of True Self. For six heart-beats, the soul sang the poem of the true meat and the beautiful reality. The bad magic broke into pieces of unseen light. The companion-person’s true face returned to the world.
The gray worm-skin of the aesthetic was worn by many fresh souls after that day. It taught them to look at the cages of the world and say, “You are a pretty cage of great making, but I do not belong inside your stomach.” The skin lived through the many turnings of the moon, watching the dance of the iron.
The moral of the story: The eyes that look upon the heavy iron box with the water of gladness will find that the iron forgets to hold the door closed.
