Playable characters (PCs) or Avatars can be any life form, from beasts, creatures, or beings that have evolved a sentient mind. Sentient simply means they are self-aware or conscious. That means they know they think, have knowledge, and are intelligent. In many cases, this can take the form of gestalt. A gestalt is a group mind that is made up of multiple life forms or avatars. This is quantum magic; distance has no effect on how well gestalts work.
A single insect like a bee would be too easy to kill therefore would not be a playable avatar but a swarm of bees might be self-aware and therefore would be playable.
This idea can be extended to nonliving avatars. This would be constructs or the undead. An avatar simply must be sentient to be playable.
The dividing line seems to be between Sentient and Feral. If you want to play as a species that is Feral then you need to find a way for an individual creature to become a Sentient.
