But as the world grew, so too did the shadows. From the places where the light did not reach, creatures of malice and darkness began to stir. They sought to choke the life from the Evergreens, to twist the rivers into poison, and to silence the songs of the birds.

In this time of great peril, the guardians of the wilderness, known as the Watchers, came forth. They were beings of flesh and spirit, born from the union of the earth and the sky. The Watchers had no faces, for they were the eyes of the forest, and they needed no single visage to see all that threatened their home.

The leader of the Watchers, a being known only as Root-Heart, was wise and strong, with the strength of ten mountains and the wisdom of a thousand seasons. Root-Heart knew that the time had come to craft a mighty defense against the encroaching darkness.

In the light of the seventh moon, under the gaze of the thousand-eyed owl, Root-Heart called upon the spirits of the forest. From the Great Tree’s bark, Root-Heart fashioned a pair of shoulder guards, weaving into them the very essence of the forest—the strength of the oak, the flexibility of the willow, and the protection of the thorn. The creatures of the forest, great and small, came forth to bless the pauldrons, each leaving a mark of their own. The wolf gave its stealth, the bear its endurance, and the eagle its sharp sight.

Thus were born the Forest’s Watchful Shoulders, a pair of pauldrons unlike any other. They were not just armor but a living part of the wilderness, breathing with the life of the forest and humming with its ancient power. The Watchers donned the pauldrons, and wherever they walked, the trees grew stronger, the rivers ran purer, and the darkness fled from their presence.

But as time passed, the tale of the Watchers faded into the mists of memory. The once proud guardians grew weary, their forms dissolving back into the earth from which they came. The pauldrons, too, were lost, buried beneath the roots of the Great Tree, where they lay dormant, waiting for a new guardian to awaken them.

It is said that on the day when the world is once again in peril, when the shadows rise and the light fades, the Forest’s Watchful Shoulders will be found by one who is worthy. And on that day, the ancient power of the Watchers will be reborn, and the world will be saved from darkness once more.

Moral of the Story: The strength of the earth lies in the guardianship of those who cherish it. True protection comes not from steel alone, but from the harmony between the protector and the protected, for in this union, all that is good and green shall endure.
