Red Deck: “Failure” Cards Focused on Apathy Roleplay
Card of Numb Spirits:
Effect: A wave of apathy washes over a party member, causing them to lose their next opportunity for an extra action (e.g., bonus action or reaction) during their turn.
Roleplay Apathy: As your attack fails to connect, an ally suddenly feels emotionally drained. They question the point of giving their all in battle and decide that the extra effort is simply not worth it at this moment.
Card of Disinterest’s Edge:
Effect: Your mistake emboldens an enemy, granting them a +1 bonus to attack rolls. However, they also gain a -1 penalty to defense, as your failure makes them care less about their own well-being.
Roleplay Apathy: The enemy almost seems to shrug as your attack misses, uncaring of the near miss. They become somewhat reckless, eager to end this tedious encounter but less cautious about their own safety.
Card of Emotional Drought:
Effect: A missed attack drains the emotional energy from the battlefield. All party members suffer a -1 penalty to Charisma-based skill checks for the next three rounds.
Roleplay Apathy: A pall of indifference descends upon your group. Your companions seem disengaged, their faces blank and voices monotone. Dialogue with friends or foes becomes strained, as if the will to communicate is sapped.
Green Deck: “Crit” Cards Focused on Apathy Roleplay
Card of Listless Triumph:
Effect: Your critical hit grants a +2 bonus to an ally’s next attack roll, but also inflicts a -1 penalty to their next skill check, as the overwhelming success makes subsequent efforts seem unimportant.
Roleplay Apathy: An ally watches your successful strike and briefly feels elated, but then quickly grows indifferent. Though empowered, they can’t muster the energy to care much about other endeavors.
Card of Unfazed Demise:
Effect: Your critical hit causes an enemy to lose interest in the fight, reducing their attack bonus by -2 for the next round.
Roleplay Apathy: Your strike lands with devastating impact, yet the enemy barely reacts, looking as if they have grown tired of the whole affair. Their subsequent attacks seem half-hearted, as though they no longer care about the outcome.
Card of Hollow Victory:
Effect: The sheer force of your successful attack temporarily stuns all enemies, reducing their speed by 10 feet for one round. However, the ease of your success makes you question the value of your achievement, imposing a -1 penalty on your next attack roll.
Roleplay Apathy: As your weapon or spell strikes true, enemies are momentarily stunned but your own feelings are unexpectedly flat. Your internal monologue wonders if this fight is even worth the trouble, affecting your focus for the next strike.
These cards accentuate moments of apathy, influencing both the mechanical and emotional aspects of gameplay. While some cards offer benefits, they often come with downsides that reflect a growing sense of ennui or indifference, adding a complex layer to both the strategic and role-playing dimensions of the game.
