Anxiety

Red Deck: “Failure” Cards Focused on Anxiety

Card of Gnawing Doubt:

Effect: For the next three rounds, one randomly chosen member of your party is afflicted by debilitating doubt. They must succeed in a Wisdom check at the beginning of each of their turns, failing which they are unable to take any action other than to defend themselves.

Roleplay Anxiety: As this card activates, a suffocating aura envelops a party member, causing them to second-guess their every move. This crippling doubt imposes an emotional weight on the group, building tension as everyone anxiously watches to see if the affected member can shake off their paralysis.

Card of the Inescapable Labyrinth:

Effect: For the next three rounds, the terrain around the enemies mysteriously shifts to form a labyrinthine structure. The party’s movement speed is halved when trying to navigate through it.

Roleplay Anxiety: Walls of earth and stone rise up to form a maze around the enemies. The sense of entrapment fosters an undercurrent of anxiety within the group. Each step through the twisting corridors becomes a source of tension, as they know that this disadvantage could be costly.

Card of Malevolent Focus:

Effect: An enemy of your choice receives a surge of dark energy, granting them an additional action for the next two rounds.

Roleplay Anxiety: A dark aura settles on one of your foes, and its eyes glow ominously. A sense of dread washes over the group, aware that this empowered enemy poses a heightened threat. The stakes are now higher, and the party becomes anxious about how to handle this newly fortified adversary.

Green Deck: “Crit” Cards Focused on Anxiety

Card of the Unseen Ally:

Effect: For the next two rounds, an invisible force assists a member or friend of your party other than yourself. This unseen ally can perform one beneficial action, like disarming a trap or retrieving an item, per round.

Roleplay Anxiety: The invisible presence makes itself subtly known to the party, leaving them puzzled but intrigued. As actions are performed by the unseen ally, the group is left in anxious anticipation, not knowing exactly what will happen next but hoping it’s for the best.

Card of Temporal Dilation:

Effect: Time appears to slow down for your party for one round. Each member gains an extra reaction that can be used for an attack of opportunity, to catch a falling object, or similar actions.

Roleplay Anxiety: The world around you appears to blur as time briefly warps. While this offers a tactical advantage, the eerie sensation leaves the party members feeling anxious, uncertain of the stability of reality itself and what this manipulation of time could mean for them.

Card of the Wavering Shadow:

Effect: A shadowy figure appears next to an enemy, causing it to be distracted and take a -2 penalty to its defense for the next two rounds.

Roleplay Anxiety: The appearance of the mysterious shadowy figure next to an enemy adds a layer of complexity and tension. While the effect is beneficial, it also induces a sense of foreboding, as the party can’t be entirely sure of the shadow’s nature or what it might imply for future encounters.

In both the “Failure” and “Crit” decks, these cards induce varying degrees of anxiety in the characters involved, aligning with the high-stakes and magical nature of the realm of Saṃsāra. Whether it’s the uncertainty brought about by debilitating conditions or the tension that accompanies unexpected aid, these cards are designed to elevate the emotional complexity of the encounters.
