Lore
When the exiles fell from the upper spheres onto the moon of Saṃsāra, those bearing the ancestral memories of the high Pamir peaks and the deep mineral gorges of Tajikistan encountered a world where the subterranean depths were in constant, turbulent motion. Lacking the slow, predictable continental drift of terrestrial worlds, Gaialilith’s crust is agitated by interior magma surges, while the massive gravitational pull of the gas giant VaporSphere flexes subterranean strata twice every lunar cycle. To penetrate the earth for iron, tin, lapis lazuli, and arcane crystals was to invite catastrophic rock-bursts, suffocating pockets of stagnant damp, and crushing cave-ins.
The Sufi tunnel-wrights and master miners (kankans) of the mountain lodges refused to treat the living rock as an enemy to be assaulted with crude sledges and fire-setting. Drawing upon centuries of contemplative practice, they taught that the mountain is a resonant body; its bones sing under pressure, and its fractures are the outward manifestations of inner spiritual strain. By practicing rhythmic breath control (habs-i dam) and the vocalized remembrance (dhikr) within pitch-black drifts, these mystical engineers learned to match their own heartbeats to the acoustic frequency of the stone. They could hear the difference between a sound limestone vault and a fractured shale roof days before a collapse occurred.
Sufism 313 of the Resonant Adit was developed within the mountain adits of the Pamir borderlands to serve as an accessible, rugged focus for tier 1 avatars dedicated to mining engineering, subterranean sapping, and deep excavation. Centered upon an acoustic brow-medallion of dark nephrite jade housing an uncut tier 1 crystal, this miner’s cowl allows a subterranean surveyor to listen to the lithic stress of the strata, navigate dark drift systems without optical illumination, clear choked ore seams with harmonic percussion, and anchor timber shoring against sudden ground-shocks.
Description
Sufism 313 of the Resonant Adit is an engineering cowl and miner’s quilted hood designed to be worn over the head, covering the crown, temples, and neck, while securing beneath the chin with a thick bronze buckle. The hood is hand-loomed from a blend of dense mountain sheep’s wool, coarse yak down, and split raw silk, kettle-dyed a dark charcoal-slate using fermented walnut rinds and graphite powder. The outer surface is quilted in an overlapping diamond pattern reinforced with fine copper wire stitching that dissipates kinetic impacts. The interior lining consists of soft, unbleached mountain linen steeped in an infusion of camphor, wild thyme, and menthol, cooling the scalp and soothing the respiratory tract against dry rock dust.
Positioned directly over the wearer’s forehead is an arched medallion carved from dense black nephrite jade, measuring two and a half inches wide. The face of the jade is incised with the geometric tiers of a muqarnas vault—the architectural honeycomb that distributes ceiling weight across multiple facets—with every recessed facet inlaid with powdered iron pyrite and dark cinnabar. Concealed within a hollowed socket behind this jade plate is an uncut, coin-sized tier 1 magic crystal displaying a smoky amber-and-gold core, bedded securely in a compound of alpine pine resin, graphite flakes, and pulverized bog-iron.
Hanging beside each ear from reinforced leather tabs are two small, cold-hammered bronze acoustic chime-bars that vibrate in sympathetic resonance with settling rock strata. Suspended from the right cheek-strap is a miniature forged-steel geological testing chisel, while the left cheek-strap carries an unbroken loop of ninety-nine beads turned from dense mountain hornbeam and wild apricot wood, separated into three equal groups by cold-forged iron spacing washers. As the miner walks through unlit drifts, strikes rock with a pick, or nods their head, the iron washers tap rhythmically against the bronze chime-bars, establishing an acoustic tempo that anchors the user’s focus and respiratory rhythm in the dark.

- Structural Durability and Item Hit Points:
- Resilience Score: Base resilience rating of 10.
- Total Item Hit Points Formula: Maximum item hit points equal the wearing avatar’s maximum health points plus 10 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by tier level 1).
- Degradation Mechanics: If subjected to direct physical sunder attacks or crushing rockfalls, the cowl becomes broken and inert if reduced to half its total hit point pool or lower. If reduced to zero hit points, the wool-silk weave tears, the nephrite jade medallion splits, and the tier 1 crystal fractures into inert gray dust.
- Attunement Ward: When struck while attuned, a successful attack unattunes the item rather than dealing direct damage to its hit points; subsequent hits to the unattuned cowl deal normal damage against its hit point pool. Damaged states must be repaired before re-attunement can occur.
- Attunement Requirements and Handling:
- Attunement Method: Simple Attunement.
- Time Requirement: Requires one continuous minute of seated, contemplative breathing in complete darkness with the forehead medallion pressed against raw bedrock, chanting the lithic names of stability to harmonize the crystal matrix with the mountain’s acoustic pulse.
- Capacity Usage: Occupies one of the avatar’s ten allowable active attuned item slots.
- Single Bearer Bond: Can be bonded to only one avatar at a time; attempts by another creature to attune immediately sever the existing bond, causing the original owner to feel a sudden ringing chill across their temples.
- Valuation and Mercantile Context:
- Suggested Baseline Value: 40 to 55 Silver pieces (equivalent to 80 to 110 nickels, or 4 to 5.5 gold coins).
- Economic Dynamics: Operates under a sellers’ market with buyer beware principles. In deep shaft-mining settlements, quarry camps, or fortress excavation outposts, it commands high demand and top value; in open agricultural plains or coastal sailing ports, traders value it primarily as heavy cold-weather headgear.
Multiple Passives Magic
- Passive 1: Mīzān of the Resonant Seam (Lithic Stress Telemetry):
- While the cowl is attuned and worn, the embedded smoky quartz crystal projects a structural and geological overlay into the avatar’s Mind’s Eye.
- When examining rock faces, mine drifts, natural caverns, or stone foundations, the user perceives glowing amber vectors that highlight directional compression paths, shear stress zones, hidden gas pockets, and subterranean voids up to thirty feet deep within solid rock.
- The avatar gains an inherent advantage on all skill checks involving Mining Engineering, Geology, Structural Sapping, Tunnel Excavation, and Subterranean Navigation.
- Passive 2: Purity of the Deep Breath (Chthonic Respiratory Ward):
- The constant micro-vibration of the nephrite jade and pine-resin matrix creates an energetic filtration envelope around the wearer’s mouth and nostrils.
- The avatar gains complete immunity to non-magical subterranean choking dust, coal-dust irritation, and nausea caused by low concentrations of sulfur gas, damp, or volcanic ash.
- Fine airborne rock dust, pulverized quartz grit, and smoke within a two-foot radius of the cowl rapidly settle to the ground as inert particles.
- Passive 3: Acoustic Percussive Cleavage:
- The contact between the jade brow-plate and the avatar’s skull aligns the kinetic energy of hand tools with the natural resonant frequency of the rock.
- Mining picks, sledgehammers, wedges, and chisels wielded by the avatar deal 25% increased structural damage against unworked stone, mineral veins, and ore bodies.
- Percussive strikes produce 50% less fracturing shock to adjacent ceiling strata, preventing accidental cave-in triggers during aggressive ore extraction.
Multiple Activable Magics
- Activable Magic 1: Somatic Resonant Cleave (The Chisel Ping):
- Action Cost: Consumes exactly one action during the avatar’s turn.
- Casting Modality: Somatic casting lasting less than six seconds, requiring the avatar to strike an iron chisel or mining pick against a rock face while vocalizing a single, high-pitched harmonic tone.
- Operational Effect: The tier 1 crystal discharges a sharp, amber acoustic shockwave through the rock strata across a 30-foot radius.
- Functional Utility: Natural stone along existing cleavage planes fractures cleanly without explosive violence, dislodging up to one cubic yard of ore or dressed stone blocks in seconds. In combat, targeting a ceiling or stone floor forces adjacent enemies to make a balance check or fall prone, while leaving the immediate overhead ceiling structurally stable.
- True Name Interaction: If the true mineralogical or geological name of the rock stratum is spoken during casting, the acoustic cleavage radius expands from 30 feet to 60 feet.
- Activable Magic 2: Silent Web of the Shoring Ward:
- Action Cost: Consumes exactly one action during the avatar’s turn, or can be triggered as a reaction to a sudden collapse.
- Casting Modality: Silent casting executed entirely without vocalization, triggered by directed mental focus and a sharp, two-handed downward tug on the cowl’s chime-bar tabs.
- Operational Effect: Operating under the standard silent casting reduction of 25% potency, the cowl projects an instantaneous kinetic dampening field across a 20-foot radius centered on the avatar.
- Tactical Application: When a ceiling collapse, blast backfire, falling boulder, or blunt crushing impact threatens the area, the barrier absorbs 25% of the incoming crushing damage for the avatar and all adjacent allies, shunting the kinetic shockwave into adjacent side walls and floor pillars.
- Activable Magic 3: Ritual Chanting of the Living Timber (Unyielding Stope):
- Action Cost: Consumes one action to initiate, followed by continuous execution for greater than six seconds, classifying the casting fully as a Ritual.
- Casting Modality: Ritual casting requiring the avatar to walk along a line of mine timbering, an arched portal, or a rock pillar while maintaining continuous throat-recitation of the attributes of stability, sliding the ninety-nine hornbeam beads through their fingers.
- Operational Effect: Gaining the full ritual chanting benefit of up to a +25% increase in magical potency, the rite infuses up to four adjacent timber props, archways, or rock pillars.
- Structural Fortification: The structural load threshold of the shoring is doubled for twenty-four hours, rendering the supports immune to settling tremors, explosive shockwaves, and shifting overburden pressure.
- Concentration Risk: Taking damage during the chant forces an immediate saving throw to avoid breaking the harmonic cadence, which collapses the reinforcement field before the structural bonds lock.

Commercial Channels, Mercantile Establishments, and Regional Valuation of Sufism 313 of the Resonant Adit
- Kankan Lodges and Deep-Shaft Mining Guildhalls:
- Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Across the jagged crags of the Pamir ranges, mineral rifts, and deep-shaft adits of Saṃsāra, subterranean engineering commerce is anchored in the mountain lodges of the kankans (traditional master miners and rock-heawers). These communal bastions are hewn directly into living granite and slate cliffs beside active tunnel portals. Heavy lintels of oil-treated pine support low, vaulted stone antechambers lit by sputtering tallow lamps and copper tallow-crucibles. Display racks made of rough-cut timber hold forged wedges, iron chisels, acoustic testing bars, and surveying compendiums written upon oiled parchment. The atmosphere is dense and dry, smelling of pulverized shale, iron dust, alpine pine resin, and bitter menthol, accompanied by the steady, muffled clink-tap of miners assaying ore samples in adjoining forge-rooms.
- Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Securing Sufism 313 of the Resonant Adit in a mining lodge requires proving one’s technical readiness to handle lithic forces. The presiding elder kankan inspects the prospective purchaser’s hearing, breathing rhythm, and manual grip. Through their Mind’s Eye, the guildmaster evaluates the avatar’s tier rating to confirm that their personal mana reservoir can sustain attunement without inducing dangerous frequency backlashes in confined underground stopes. Transactions are settled in weight-verified silver coinage, electrum ingots, or formal mineral scrip issued by regional excavation cartels.
- Purchasing Cost: Because the raw components—yak down, mountain wool, black nephrite jade, native copper, and river bronze—are sourced directly from local mountain shafts and high-altitude pastures, production overhead remains stable. In these specialized guild lodges, the cowl sells for 40 to 55 silver pieces (equivalent to 80 to 110 nickels, or 4 to 5.5 gold coins). Avatars presenting the recognized token of the Miner’s Union, Sappers’ Guild, or an allied mountain dervish order receive the standard faction discount of 10% multiplied by their tier (a 10% reduction for a tier 1 avatar), lowering the purchase price to between 36 and 49.5 silver pieces.
- Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: When an avatar sells a pre-owned cowl to a mining guild, the chief assay master conducts a thorough inspection. They strike the nephrite jade plate with a tuning rod to verify structural integrity, test the bronze chime-bars for acoustic true pitch, and examine the inner crystal bed via the Mind’s Eye to ensure the smoky quartz has suffered no internal fractures from concussive cave-ins. In accordance with Saṃsāra’s merchant baseline, the lodge offers 10% of the item’s intrinsic value multiplied by the seller’s character tier (yielding a 10% payout for a tier 1 avatar, or 4 to 5.5 silver pieces). The sale is recorded in iron-bound ledgers, with payment wired to the avatar’s World Bank ledger, minus the statutory 1% processing fee rounded up to the nearest copper.
- Metropolitan Mineral Exchanges and Imperial Geological Ateliers:
- Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Within the fortified capitals and grand industrial hubs of central island states, subterranean equipment is marketed inside prestigious mineral salons and state-chartered geological bureaus. Housed in monumental basalt or polished diorite structures along major commercial avenues, these salons feature leaded crystal vitrines, brass balance scales, and illuminated specimen plinths displaying mineralogical foci and underground navigation instruments. Well-dressed clerks attend to crown fortress engineers, military sapper captains, and deep-delve syndicate directors seeking elite surveying regalia.
- Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Purchasing the cowl within an imperial salon requires presenting formal credentials and undergoing an account evaluation via the Mind’s Eye to verify credit standing with the World Bank. The cowl is displayed in an iron-banded chest of camphor wood, accompanied by an inked parchment scroll certifying the density of the nephrite jade, the purity of the pyritic inlay, and the harmonic resonance rating of the embedded catalyst. Transactions are sealed with official wax stamps for provincial mining records.
- Purchasing Cost: Driven up by inter-island shipping tariffs, imperial retail markup, bureaucratic processing fees, and the mandatory 3% municipal point-of-sale tax, prices in metropolitan salons range from 75 to 105 silver pieces (7.5 to 10.5 gold coins). Avatars presenting a verified commission from the Crown Engineering Corps, Imperial Bureau of Mines, or Royal Surveyors Guild receive their 10% tier 1 discount, bringing the net price to 67.5 to 94.5 silver pieces.
- Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: An avatar liquidating the cowl at an imperial atelier must submit to a meticulous diagnostic check. The appraiser verifies that the quilted wool-silk weave has not suffered acid degradation, checks that the copper wire stitching remains conductive, and confirms the absence of judicial liens or lingering Banishment Marks. Adhering to the standard 10% baseline for tier 1 sellers, the proprietor offers between 7.5 and 10.5 silver pieces, depositing the proceeds directly into the seller’s World Bank account to create a clear audit trail for crown tax collectors.
- Subterranean Sapper Dens and Excavation Fences:
- Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Tucked away inside the damp, unlit undercrofts of deep mining towns, abandoned drift junctions, and smuggler tunnels, black-market sapper fences deal in salvaged and contraband excavation tools. Often fronted as an illicit scrap-iron forge, tallow refinery, or charcoal depot, these dens are secured behind thick oak barriers and iron portcullises. Goods are stored in dry stone niches concealed behind false rock faces to avoid seizure during bailiff sweeps. The air is heavy with the acrid stench of damp coal, sulfuric wash, stale tobacco, and sulfur smoke from improvised brazier stoves.
- Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Entry into a sapper fence’s lair requires an introduction from a trusted delve-scavenger or the payment of an iron token to armed pick-wielders at the door. Items sold here frequently derive from abandoned shaft excavations, battlefield sapping tunnels, or the remains of fallen tier 1 avatars whose physical forms dissolved into purple sparks upon death. Transactions are conducted strictly in hard physical currency—loose silver, unrefined gold nuggets, or raw copper disks—completely rejecting World Bank transfers to avoid judicial scrutiny or asset impoundment.
- Purchasing Cost: Subterranean fences operate on aggressive opportunism. If the dealer knows the buyer is facing an active underground emergency—such as an unmapped tunnel cave-in, an encroaching subterranean gas pocket, or an imminent siege assault—the cost is driven up to between 80 and 130 silver pieces (8 to 13 physical gold coins). Guild memberships and official titles carry no weight in these subterranean stalls.
- Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Fences offer an immediate outlet for gear acquired during unsanctioned mining operations or tunnel skirmishes. If the fence has a waiting buyer among an outlaw sapper gang or wildcat mining cartel, they may pay up to twice the standard merchant rate, providing 8 to 11 silver pieces in untraceable coin. If the seller appears badly wounded, choking on rock dust, or pursued by mine guards, the fence will exploit their desperation, offering as little as 2 silver coins.
- Frontier Adit Waystations and Pit-Head Supply Caravans:
- Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Along the unpaved mountain roads connecting remote iron pits, tin delves, and quarry settlements, trade is conducted from rugged freight wagons and temporary tent compounds. These depots are set up at tunnel mouths, cable-tramway terminals, and mule trailheads. Heavy timber wagons feature drop-down workbenches holding hand sledges, oil flasks, and coils of braided hoisting rope. The air smells of draft oxen, crushed shale, damp wool, and woodsmoke from pine fires.
- Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Business at a pit-head waystation is direct and utilitarian. The trader transacts business from the back of the wagon, keeping a loaded hunting bow or heavy iron pry-bar ready at hand. The buyer tests the cowl on a rough plank counter, striking the chime-bars with the small testing chisel to verify the resonance of the nephrite plate. Because these trading posts operate in remote mountain territories beyond municipal lines, town sales taxes do not apply, though caravans must account for state border road tariffs.
- Purchasing Cost: In frontier pit-head camps and quarry waystations, Sufism 313 of the Resonant Adit sells for 48 to 68 silver pieces. Frontier traders readily accept practical barter, eagerly trading for durable bulk tools such as hardened steel pick heads, forged wedges, heavy canvas sacks, tallow casks, or biological fluids extracted from subterranean cave beasts using fluid collectors.
- Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Frontier merchants carry modest coin reserves and prioritize equipment that can be quickly turned over to incoming miners or surveying parties. When buying the cowl from a tier 1 avatar, the merchant pays the standard 10% rate (4.8 to 6.8 silver pieces), but usually settles the transaction in essential survival supplies—such as lantern fuel, hard biscuits, water skins, or replacement chisels. Cash payouts are logged in the wagon manifest to satisfy state road patrols.
- Statutory Taxation, Banking Overhead, and Currency Encumbrance:
- Municipal Taxation and State Transit Tariffs: All lawful sales of the cowl are subject to the revenue laws of Saṃsāra’s island states. Transactions finalized within chartered Towns, State Capitals, or Central Cities carry a mandatory 3% municipal point-of-sale tax. Merchant wagons transporting equipment across state borders must pay a 5% ad valorem transit tariff assessed by road sentries, with an additional 1% national toll applied at the Central City gate. Unregistered foreigners in the state are assessed double rates (a 6% sales tax and a 10% border transit tariff).
- World Bank Administrative Deductions: When sales proceeds are credited to an avatar’s account through the commercial banking network, the system automatically deducts a 1% administrative fee, rounded up to the nearest copper coin. On a sale yielding 5 silver pieces (50 copper), the bank deducts 1 copper, crediting 4 silver and 9 copper into the character’s Mind’s Eye account ledger. These transaction records are accessible to municipal bailiffs and mining commissioners investigating claim financing.
- Physical Coinage Weight Versus Extradimensional Storage: Avatars carrying loose coinage to fund deep-delve purchases must manage physical bulk and noise. Dozens of loose copper, nickel, or silver pieces create noticeable weight that slows movement through cramped crawlspaces and produces an audible metallic rattle that attracts predatory subterranean horrors. Transporting money inside an Extradimensional Pouch negates all coin mass and volume, allowing the mining engineer to maneuver through tight shafts and unstable drifts unimpeded.
Roleplay Dynamics, Environmental Tactics, and Defensive-Offensive Applications of Sufism 313 of the Resonant Adit
- Deep Bedrock Adits, Cramped Stopes, and Subterranean Ore Veins:
- Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Deep beneath Saṃsāra’s island crusts, ancient metamorphic strata are under immense lithic pressure. In cramped mining stopes and extraction drifts, space is severely restricted; pickaxes strike dense veins of iron ore, tin, and lapis lazuli in near-total darkness. The air is stagnant, hot, and choked with pulverized silica dust, while the overhead burden groans with the threat of sudden rockbursts and crushing ceiling collapses. Subterranean burrowers, blind chitinous predators, and rival claim-jumpers exploit the pitch-black tunnels to ambush work parties.
- Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- While working in cramped, poorly ventilated drifts, the avatar relies on the passive Purity of the Deep Breath. The player narrates breathing normally despite clouds of pulverized quartz and coal dust, the energetic filtration matrix of the jade and pine resin settling airborne grit within a two-foot radius and keeping the respiratory passages free from choking.
- As the mountain shifts under the gravitational pull of VaporSphere, the Mīzān of the Resonant Seam passive provides early warning. Through their Mind’s Eye, the avatar sees glowing amber vectors running through the roof strata, identifying shear-stress points, micro-fractures, and hidden void pockets up to thirty feet deep, allowing them to pull allies back seconds before a lethal slab falls.
- If a sudden rockburst or ceiling slab gives way, the avatar activates the Silent Web of the Shoring Ward. A sharp, wordless downward tug on the bronze chime-bar tabs deploys a kinetic dampening web across a 20-foot radius, absorbing 25% of the crushing impact from falling stone and shunting the force into the side walls.
- In close-quarters tunnel combat, the +1 Armor Check bonus represents the quilted wool-silk cowl, copper wire stitching, and dense nephrite jade brow-plate deflecting pickaxe strikes, claw swipes, and falling rock spikes aimed at the head, temples, and neck.
- Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- When ambushed by armored subterranean beasts or rival miners in a narrow drift, the avatar executes the Somatic Resonant Cleave. Driving an iron testing chisel into an identified cleavage plane and vocalizing a sharp, resonant harmonic tone, the avatar unleashes an acoustic shockwave across 30 feet. Stone along natural fracture lines shatters cleanly, dropping loose rock onto the adversaries and forcing them to make balance checks or fall prone.
- In sustained melee, the avatar utilizes their tier 1 pass-through die (1d4) alongside their heavy miner’s pick, applying standard iterative attack penalties (one-half damage for secondary actions). Leveraging the Acoustic Percussive Cleavage passive, strikes against unworked stone, mineral veins, or stone-carapace monsters deal +25% structural damage, smashing through chitin or improvised breastworks with 50% less shock to adjacent ceiling strata.
- To hold a critical ore drift against pursuing forces, the avatar performs the Ritual Chanting of the Living Timber upon timber support sets. Sliding the ninety-nine hornbeam beads through their fingers while chanting formulas of stability, the user doubles the load capacity of the timber props for twenty-four hours, ensuring the shoring withstands heavy ramming or concussive explosions without failing.
- Gas-Seep Karst Caverns, Methane Vents, and Flooded Sumps:
- Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: In porous limestone karst formations and subterranean drainage basins, mining adits frequently cut into natural cavities filled with toxic damp, odorless firedamp (methane), sulfur dioxide, and rising acidic sump water. Open flame is suicidal due to explosive gas pockets, forcing miners to work in pitch darkness or by the dim phosphorescence of cave lichens. Troglodytic skirmishers and subterranean ghhouls lurk in the damp hollows, using the toxic air to suffocate intruders.
- Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- Navigating completely unlit, gas-filled karst shafts, the avatar relies on the Mīzān of the Resonant Seam to visualize the terrain without lanterns. The amber vectors in the Mind’s Eye reveal pressurized gas reservoirs, thin rock partitions holding back flooded sumps, and deep drop-off pits within the limestone strata.
- When entering pockets of sulfur gas or stagnant black damp, the Purity of the Deep Breath passive completely shields the avatar from nausea and asphyxiation, allowing the engineer to operate calmly in environments where companions choke or require air bladders.
- The continuous acoustic ticking of the iron washers against the bronze chime-bars acts as an auditory grounding mechanism (dhikr), keeping the user’s breathing steady and granting immunity to panic and acoustic disorientation caused by roaring subterranean water vents.
- The +1 Armor Check bonus turns aside jagged stalactite drops loosened by atmospheric condensation and acidic corrosion.
- Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- When facing enemies fortified across a flooded karst bridge, the avatar deploys the Somatic Resonant Cleave. Striking the limestone bank with their chisel while singing the rock’s mineral frequency releases an amber acoustic wave that causes brittle flowstone bridges to fracture cleanly, dropping hostile skirmishers into deep water sumps below.
- By using the Mīzān passive to locate thin rock curtains holding back trapped methane pockets, the avatar can use a secondary action to drive a steel wedge into the barrier, venting suffocating gas directionally into enemy fortifications while remaining safe behind their personal respiratory filtration envelope.
- In retreating maneuvers through narrow karst drifts, the avatar uses Acoustic Percussive Cleavage to strike key limestone keystones with a sledgehammer, initiating a controlled roof collapse that seals the drift behind the party with minimal risk of triggering a chain-reaction cave-in overhead.
- Volcanic Caldera Tunnels, Basalt Sapping Shafts, and Magma Rifts:
- Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: In the volcanic rift zones of Saṃsāra, subterranean mining taps into rich deposits of volcanic glass, native sulfur, and heat-forged skystone. The environment is searingly hot, featuring rivers of liquid basalt, boiling mud pots, and frequent seismic tremors caused by Gaialilith’s interior cauldrons. The air is dense with sulfur dioxide, hot steam, and drifting volcanic ash. Fire salamanders, pyroclastic hounds, and magma elementals inhabit the smoking rifts.
- Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- Traversing brittle basalt crusts flanked by molten lava, the Mīzān passive clearly outlines the thickness of the stone floor in the Mind’s Eye, highlighting hollow lava tubes and pressurized magma chambers, ensuring the party avoids stepping through paper-thin crusts.
- The Purity of the Deep Breath passive buffers the avatar’s lungs against choking sulfur fumes, hot ash particles, and poisonous volcanic vapors, allowing the engineer to maintain full physical endurance in oxygen-deprived volcanic galleries.
- If a steam fissure erupts or a seismic shock throws boiling mud toward the squad, the avatar triggers the Silent Web of the Shoring Ward. The wordless tug on the chime-bar tabs absorbs 25% of the concussive kinetic blast, safely redirecting the shockwave into adjacent basalt walls.
- The +1 Armor Check bonus shields the skull and neck from flying volcanic pumice, searing slag droplets, and razor-sharp obsidian shards ejected by volcanic vents.
- Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- Confronted by magma elementals or volcanic predators, the avatar uses the Somatic Resonant Cleave against the basalt floor. The 30-foot acoustic pulse shatters the brittle surface layer along dormant thermal stress lines, creating impassable fissures and knocking advancing elemental beasts into subterranean magma conduits.
- Utilizing the Acoustic Percussive Cleavage passive, the avatar strikes crystalline basalt pillars with heavy hammers to produce massive, razor-edged obsidian shrapnel that cuts through unarmored fire-beasts.
- When building temporary barriers to redirect advancing lava flows away from excavation shafts, the avatar chants the Unyielding Stope ritual over dry basalt masonry. The enchanted stone blocks lock together with doubled structural resilience, holding back molten rock long enough for crews to evacuate precious ore.
- Besieged Fortress Sub-basements, Sapper Breaches, and Counter-Mines:
- Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: During territorial sieges and state warfare, the decisive battles often occur beneath fortress foundations. Military sappers dig subterranean approach galleries to undermine curtain walls, while defending engineers dig counter-mines to intercept and collapse enemy tunnels. These operations feature pitch-black crawlways, smoke-filled galleries, unstable wooden shoring, and desperate close-quarters melee fought with shovels, picks, and short spears.
- Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- In counter-mining warfare, the Mīzān passive acts as an infallible acoustic and geological telemetry array. By pressing the nephrite jade brow-plate against the tunnel wall, the avatar detects enemy sapping galleries up to thirty feet away, mapping their exact depth, direction, and structural weaknesses through amber vectors in the Mind’s Eye.
- When enemy sappers detonate black-powder charges or collapse a tunnel to crush the counter-mining crew, the avatar deploys the Silent Web of the Shoring Ward. The kinetic web dampens the concussive shockwave by 25%, preventing the drift from suffering a total cave-in and keeping escape routes open.
- If the enemy pumps sulfur smoke or burning pitch into the counter-mine, the Purity of the Deep Breath passive keeps the avatar breathing clearly, allowing them to fight through smoke clouds that leave enemy sappers retching.
- The +1 Armor Check bonus deflects thrusting trench pikes, crossbolts, and entrenching tool blows aimed at the head during claustrophobic tunnel clashes.
- Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- Upon detecting an enemy sapping tunnel directly beneath a curtain wall, the avatar drives an iron chisel into the dividing rock wall and unleashes the Somatic Resonant Cleave. The acoustic pulse dislodges the ceiling of the enemy gallery, collapsing their approach tunnel and burying their work crews while leaving the fortress foundation above intact.
- In offensive sapping missions, the avatar uses Acoustic Percussive Cleavage to undermine enemy ramparts 25% faster with hand tools, while the 50% reduction in acoustic ceiling vibration prevents surface sentries from hearing the digging beneath their feet.
- Before launching an underground assault, the avatar performs the Unyielding Stope ritual upon the breach timbers. The reinforced frames bear the weight of shifting fortress rubble, allowing allied shock troops to pour through the gap without risking an overhead collapse.
- High-Altitude Mountain Quarries, Scree Slopes, and Slate Flumes:
- Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: In the high Pamir mountain quarries, stonecutters extract massive building blocks from sheer vertical cliffs thousands of paces above sea level. The environment features freezing gale winds, unstable scree chutes, treacherous slate flumes, and thin atmosphere that quickly exhausts physical laborers. Mountain drakes, rock-goyles, and cliff raiders hunt these heights, attempting to knock quarry workers down vertical chasms.
- Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- Standing upon narrow, icy quarry ledges or swinging crane scaffolds, the avatar relies on the steady, metronomic cadence of the bronze chime-bars and hornbeam beads. The acoustic rhythm stabilizes internal equilibrium, eliminating altitude sickness and physical vertigo in howling winds.
- While operating on sliding scree slopes or crumbling slate ledges, the Mīzān passive highlights stable rock anchors versus detached boulders, preventing the avatar from stepping onto loose scree sheets that trigger rockslides.
- When cliff raiders roll boulders down the mountain face toward quarry crews, the avatar triggers the Silent Web of the Shoring Ward. The barrier reduces the crushing kinetic trauma of rolling rockfalls by 25%, deflecting heavy stone slabs away from work crews.
- The +1 Armor Check bonus turns aside slingshot stones, falling slate shards, and diving raptor talons, the quilted yak-down cowl and jade medallion shielding the skull and cervical spine.
- Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- When engaged by cliff raiders or mountain beasts along a high quarry face, the avatar deploys the Somatic Resonant Cleave against the cliff wall. Discharging the acoustic wave along pre-stressed slate beds causes tons of sharp shale to split cleanly and tumble down upon enemy positions, breaking their siege lines.
- The avatar uses Acoustic Percussive Cleavage to dress stone blocks or hew defensive revetments out of living mountain granite in minutes, establishing defensible breastworks against aerial or cliffside ambushes.
- In retreating maneuvers along narrow mountain tracks, the avatar identifies primary cliff-face keystones using the Mīzān passive, driving a cold chisel into the highlighted shear point to shear the cliff path away entirely, leaving pursuers stranded on the other side of a chasm.
- Cloud City Anchor Pylons, Inverted Floating Keels, and Mineral Core Disks:
- Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: High within Saṃsāra’s stratosphere, Cloud Cities drift anchored beneath massive rotating aerodynamic disks. Excavation crews mine the interiors of floating mineral disks and inverted skystone keels to extract meteoric iron and buoyant crystals. These environments present shifting artificial gravity vectors, disorienting vertical shafts, open-air drops into the planetary void, and high-altitude shear winds. Sky-corsairs, gargoyle flocks, and rogue aerial constructs raid these mining platforms.
- Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- Operating inside hollowed, zero-G or inverted-gravity core shafts, the acoustic feedback of the suspended chime-bars cancels spatial disorientation. The rhythmic ticking grounds the avatar’s sensory awareness, allowing them to orient their posture instantly despite shifting gravitational currents.
- The Mīzān passive continuously scans floating skystone strata, alerting the engineer to tensile stress fractures, buoyancy core imbalances, and structural metal fatigue within the city’s keel pylons.
- If a docking sky-ship collides with an extraction gantry or an anchoring cable snaps, the avatar uses the Silent Web of the Shoring Ward to dampen the sudden concussive shock by 25%, preventing the work platform from shearing free of its moorings.
- The +1 Armor Check bonus protects the skull and temples against snapping cable whips, flying iron rivets, and raking claws from diving aerial beasts.
- Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
- When enemy boarders swarm across a floating mineral gantry, the avatar deploys the Somatic Resonant Cleave directly into the core skystone. The acoustic pulse disrupts the harmonic alignment of the mineral matrix, causing the local gravity field to fluctuate violently and throwing invading boarders into the open sky.
- In competitive salvage operations on drifting celestial ore bodies, the avatar utilizes Acoustic Percussive Cleavage to cut out dense meteoric crystal pockets 25% faster than rival excavation teams, cleanly extracting high-grade ore without shattering the delicate buoyant matrix.
- During boarding defense, the avatar chants the Unyielding Stope ritual over gantry docking struts, reinforcing the iron-and-stone framework so it can withstand the impact of enemy boarding rams without fracturing.

Perception of Activation:
- Five Senses Breakdown:
- Visual Perception (Sight):
- User Experience: At the instant of activation, the visual field undergoes a dramatic optical transmutation. Pitch darkness peels away without the harsh glare of an open flame; the user’s vision shifts to a warm, high-definition amber spectrum. The black nephrite jade medallion over the forehead ignites from within, projecting a tranquil, steady radiance through the geometric honeycomb facets of the carved muqarnas vault. Intricate silver and copper quilting stitches along the dark wool-silk cowl shimmer with faint conductive sparks. When the user looks upon raw stone, fractured shale, mine timbers, or excavation drifts, their vision overlays a dense web of glowing amber and cinnabar vectors that trace directional compression paths, shear-stress zones, trapped pockets of firedamp (methane), and subterranean voids up to thirty feet deep within solid rock.
- Observer Experience: Bystanders witness the dark jade brow-plate suddenly flare with a deep, lantern-like amber-and-gold glow, illuminating the miner’s face, neck, and upper chest in soft architectural light. The overlapping diamond quilting across the hood glistens as if threaded with live embers, casting intricate honeycomb shadows across the surrounding rock faces. Under True Sight or magical detection, observers perceive an expanding geometric dome of layered stone arches and golden tie-rods radiating from the cowl, encompassing the shaft in a perimeter of calculated lithic equilibrium.
- Auditory Perception (Sound):
- User Experience: The irregular clatter of the bronze chime-bars, steel testing chisel, and hornbeam beads ceases to be mere gear noise; instead, it snaps into an acoustic cadence of absolute mechanical precision. The strikes resolve into a deep, ringing tone that hums in sympathetic vibration with the user’s skull and cervical spine. Through the temporal bones, the user perceives a low-frequency hum—a polyphonic vocal drone reminiscent of Sufi throat-recitation and choral remembrance (dhikr)—harmonizing directly with the resonant frequency of the bedrock. Surrounding rock conditions register as distinct acoustic tones: solid, load-bearing granite hums in rich, steady harmonic fifths, while crumbling shale roofs and slipping fault lines emit a dry, discordant rattle.
- Observer Experience: Observers hear the miner’s headgear produce a clear, bell-like chiming that rings out like a series of small, tuned anvils. The contact of the iron washers against the bronze chime-bars cuts cleanly through the deafening roar of mine drills, roaring subterranean waterfalls, or groaning timbers without hurting the ears. Those standing within arm’s reach report hearing a rhythmic, low-pitched vibration in the air that sounds like a choir of deep voices chanting a solemn cadence of stability.
- Olfactory Perception (Smell):
- User Experience: As the internal Tier 1 crystal discharges its weave-charge through the resin matrix, the user’s nasal passages are flooded with a sharp, restorative medicinal aroma. The primary scent is the bracing chill of alpine pine resin and crushed camphor crystals, followed by the dry, minty fragrance of wild mountain thyme and pulverized menthol. This is grounded by the deep, earthy smell of warm wool and graphite flakes. This vapor immediately purges respiratory passages of dry rock dust, neutralizing the stinging stench of sulfur gas, damp coal dust, stale sweat, and choked mine damp.
- Observer Experience: Anyone standing within a five-foot radius of the engineer experiences a sudden, refreshing draft of cool mountain air. The suffocating atmosphere of a deep mine drift takes on the clean, invigorating fragrance of high-elevation pine groves, wild thyme, and camphor, offering immediate respiratory relief to coughing companions.
- Gustatory Perception (Taste):
- User Experience: The user experiences an immediate cooling, astringent sensation upon the tongue and palate, identical to drinking iced mountain spring water infused with menthol and sweet pine sap. This is followed by a faint, dry mineral note of flint and pure graphite. Salivary glands activate instantly, clearing gritty silica dust, bitter copper panic-taste, and the stale residue of dried travel rations from the mouth.
- Observer Experience: Observers do not taste the activation directly under normal conditions, though those standing in close proximity during an active percussive cleavage release report a dry, cool mineral prickle upon their lips, like inhaling fine quartz spray near a rushing mountain flume.
- Tactile and Somatosensory Perception (Touch):
- User Experience: The cowl delivers an immediate sensation of somatic relief across the cranium, neck, and upper shoulders. The yak-down and mountain wool lining warms gently, driving anti-inflammatory camphor warmth into the cervical vertebrae and scalp, dispelling tension headaches, pack strain, and the chill of damp drifts. The physical mass of the bronze chime-bars and tools feels entirely weightless. The user experiences an intense feeling of physical grounding; their feet feel as though they are magnetically locked to the bedrock, eliminating vertigo, slipping on slick shale, and the terrifying disorientation of pitch darkness.
- Observer Experience: Touching the miner’s hood or shoulders reveals a subtle outward pulse of dry, warm air. The quilted fabric feels unexpectedly solid under the fingers, akin to an iron skullcap, while contact with the bronze chime-bars imparts a faint, harmless vibrational tingle.
- Visual Perception (Sight):
- Multiple Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Lithic Stress Telemetry (Mīzān of the Seam):
- The avatar receives an instantaneous analytical map of mechanical forces within the surrounding stone. Directional compression paths, roof burden weights, tensile fault lines, and hidden gas or water pockets appear in the Mind’s Eye as clear mathematical vectors, completely eliminating the need for acoustic test-drilling or core sampling.
- Subterranean Echolocation & Cavity Mapping:
- Through the contact of the avatar’s boots and tool strikes, the cowl functions as a chthonic sonar array. The user perceives an internal three-dimensional layout of unmapped adits, abandoned mine shafts, natural karst caverns, underground aquifers, and thin rock partitions up to thirty feet deep (sixty feet if using the true regional name).
- Sympathetic Percussive Cleavage Intuition:
- Looking upon an ore body or rock wall, the user instinctively identifies the primary crystalline cleavage plane. The avatar intuitively knows the exact angle, force, and acoustic frequency required to strike a rock face so that it splits cleanly into transportable blocks without causing collateral damage to overhead shoring.
- Chthonic Respiratory Filtration Bubble:
- The user perceives an invisible two-foot filtration field surrounding their face. The avatar feels airborne silica shards, coal dust, toxic spore molds, and sulfurous gases being repelled and neutralized before they can enter the mouth, nostrils, or eyes.
- Gravitational Tidal Awareness:
- The cowl transmits the gravitational pull of VaporSphere as a subtle pressure across the temples, providing early somatic warnings of deep-earth convulsions, fault shifts, or rising subterranean mudflows ten to fifteen minutes before surface vibrations occur.
- Lithic Stress Telemetry (Mīzān of the Seam):
- Perspectives on Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- For the mining engineer, activating the cowl replaces claustrophobic terror with absolute contemplative clarity. The suffocating gloom and groaning burden of a deep subterranean delve resolve into a harmonious architectural puzzle. Danger is viewed without panic; the avatar perceives the surrounding rock not as a crushing tomb, but as a living vault of resonant stone whose burdens can be distributed, supported, and guided through proper harmonic alignment.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- To onlookers, the avatar’s posture transforms instantly into that of an unshakeable master of the underground. Their movements through pitch-black tunnels become deliberate and rhythmically paced, stepping across treacherous fissures and under trembling roofs with absolute confidence. The steady chime of the bronze bars and the warm amber lantern-glow of the jade brow-plate project an aura of authority that calms panicking miners during cave-in alarms.
- User’s Perspective:
- Comprehensive Positives of Activation:
- Absolute Respiratory and Toxin Protection: Grants complete immunity to choking rock dust, coal-dust irritation, and nausea caused by low concentrations of sulfur gas, damp, or volcanic ash.
- Subterranean Hazard and Cavity Detection: Instantly reveals hidden gas pockets, unstable shale ceilings, flooded sumps, and void chambers across a thirty-to-sixty-foot radius.
- Cave-In and Crushing Mitigation: The Shoring Ward ability absorbs 25% of incoming crushing damage from falling rock, collapsing mine roofs, or blunt trauma for the user and adjacent allies, safely shunting the shockwave into lateral walls.
- Accelerated and Safe Ore Extraction: Mining hand tools deal 25% increased structural damage against rock and mineral veins, while producing 50% less acoustic ceiling vibration to prevent accidental collapses.
- Shoring Fortification: The Living Timber ritual doubles the load threshold of wooden mine props, archways, and rock pillars for twenty-four hours, keeping drift escape routes open.
- Cranial and Cervical Protection: Provides a reliable +1 Armor Check bonus that shields the skull, temples, and neck from falling rock spikes, pickaxes, and shrapnel.
- Comprehensive Negatives of Activation:
- Inescapable Acoustic Giveaway: The metronomic chiming of the bronze bars and iron washers against the chisel makes moving in complete silence nearly impossible, alerting subterranean horrors and rival miners to the wearer’s position.
- High Visual and Astral Luminescence: The bright amber glow of the forehead jade plate illuminates the user clearly in darkness and blazes across the astral plane, drawing the attention of burrowing predators and planar entities.
- Distinct Medicinal Aromatic Trail: The sharp scent of camphor, pine resin, and menthol leaves a distinct olfactory trail that keen-nosed tracking beasts can easily follow against the tunnel draft.
- Catastrophic Catalyst Fracture Risk: Channelling active spellcraft carries the baseline risk where rolling a 1 on a d20 results in the internal Tier 1 crystal shattering, stripping the cowl of all magical abilities until repaired.
- Ritual Vulnerability and Interruption: The Living Timber ritual requires continuous vocal chanting and bead sliding along timber props for greater than six seconds; suffering damage during this time forces an immediate concentration save or wastes the action and breaks the spell.
- Focused Item Sunder Risk: Because the cowl openly glows and chimes at the forehead, intelligent adversaries can easily target the head slot, risking attunement loss and the physical destruction of the jade medallion.

- Arcane Infusion and Mining Engineering: Minimum skill level of 5 in Arcane Crafting, plus an additional skill level equal to the tier rating of the resulting item (totaling a minimum skill requirement of 6). The builder must understand how to channel personal mana into the Tier 1 crystal, establish lithic stress conduits, and tune the mineral matrix to Gaialilith’s subterranean seismic frequencies.
- Crafting Steps:
- Step 1: Fiber Blending, Dyeing, and Quilted Cowl Assembly:
- Blend the mountain sheep’s wool, yak down, and raw silk on a small loom, establishing an interlocking diagonal twill weave that combines high tensile strength, thermal retention, and flexibility.
- Submerge the woven yardage into a warm, fermented vat of black walnut rinds and graphite powder for ten hours until dyed a deep slate-charcoal color, then rinse in cold river water and dry flat.
- Cut the pattern pieces for the hood, crown, and protective neck-cape; layer the dyed cloth over an inner padding of washed yak wool.
- Using fine-drawn copper wire, quilt an unbroken pattern of overlapping diamonds across the entire outer surface, locking the padding in place to create a kinetic energy-dissipating grid.
- Step 2: Herbal Linen Treatment and Anti-Dust Lining Integration:
- Simmer the mountain linen piece in a concentrated broth of camphor crystals, wild mountain thyme leaves, and menthol oil for two hours, wring it out firmly, and press it flat with a heated brass iron to seal the volatile medicinal oils into the fibers.
- Align the treated linen backing along the interior of the quilted hood, tucking the outer borders inward to form a rolled hem.
- Blind-stitch the lining to the quilted shell using waxed silk thread, seating the cast bronze buckle and strap onto the lower neck tabs with reinforced box stitching.
- Step 3: Nephrite Jade Lapidary, Muqarnas Relief, and Mineral Inlay:
- Grind the slab of dark nephrite jade on the soapstone lapping block with wet garnet abrasives until it forms a symmetrical arched plate, two and a half inches wide, with softly beveled edges.
- On the front face, use diamond-tipped burins to carve the architectural tiers of a muqarnas vault—a five-tiered geometric honeycomb of receding niches—maintaining uniform groove depths of one millimeter.
- On the reverse face, excavate a central circular seating cavity three-eighths of an inch deep, contoured to match the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal.
- Blend the powdered iron pyrite and dark cinnabar with dissolved gum arabic into a thick mineral paste; press this compound into the carved niches of the muqarnas tiers, allow it to cure for six hours, and burnish the face on a leather wheel until the jade gleams with an oily, unbroken luster.
- Step 4: Forging the Chisel, Casting Chime-Bars, and Acoustic Tuning:
- Heat the high-carbon steel over charcoal, draw it out on the anvil into a four-inch testing chisel with an eyelet head, harden the cutting bevel in mineral oil, and temper it to a pale straw hue.
- Melt the river bronze in a small crucible and cast two cylindrical three-inch chime-bars in two-part stone molds; true their surfaces on the lathe.
- Suspend each chime-bar and strike it with a bronze rod, filing down the ends until both bars ring at the exact resonant frequency of native mountain granite.
- Hammer six thin iron washers on the anvil, piercing each with a central stringing hole.
- Step 5: Lathe-Turning Beads and Assembling the Counting Loop:
- Mount the sixty-six hornbeam blanks and thirty-three apricot wood blanks onto a hand lathe, turning them to a uniform six-millimeter spherical shape and boring a one-millimeter central hole through each.
- Polish the wooden beads with mineral oil and dried horsetail rushes until smooth.
- String the beads onto a loop of braided rawhide cord, separating them into three sets of thirty-three using the cold-forged iron washers (two washers per division), and terminate the loop with a small bronze clip.
- Step 6: Pine Resin Extraction and Graphite-Bog Iron Compounding:
- Insert the syringe-style fluid collector into the trunk of a living alpine pine tree at mid-day, drawing two fluid ounces of clean, unoxidized conifer oleoresin into the sealed barrel.
- Dispense the pine resin into a warmed soapstone bowl, gradually blending in the graphite flakes and pulverized bog-iron flour until a dense, pitch-black bedding mortar is produced.
- Maintain the compound at lukewarm temperature over low charcoal embers to ensure elasticity prior to catalyst insertion.
- Step 7: Crystal Seating, Conduit Infusion, and Medallion Mounting:
- Pack a firm foundation of the pine-graphite bedding mortar into the rear cavity of the carved nephrite jade medallion.
- Seat the coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal firmly into the bedding, ensuring its face rests flush with the stone cavity rim.
- The artisan focuses their Mind’s Eye, directing a continuous, measured stream of personal mana into the crystal bed over twelve minutes while chanting the rhythmic formulas of lithic stability and structural equilibrium (al-mīzān).
- Once the crystal flares with an internal smoky amber-and-gold luminescence, back-fill the cavity with the remaining resin compound and anchor the jade medallion over the forehead position of the cowl using hidden bronze mounting tabs stitched through the quilted wool shell.
- Step 8: Rigging Field Implements, Cheek-Straps, and Kinetic Balancing:
- Affix the two rawhide suspension tabs beside the ear positions, suspending one tuned bronze chime-bar on each side.
- Secure the miniature forged-steel chisel to the right cheek-strap with a reinforced leather loop; attach the ninety-nine bead loop to the left cheek-strap via its bronze clip.
- Don the cowl, fasten the chin buckle, and walk a twenty-pace stride: verify that the iron washers and bronze chime-bars strike together with an audible, rhythmic clink-tap cadence without impeding head rotation or vision.
- Step 9: Consecration, Smudging, and Structural Verification:
- Ignite the herbal smudge bundle of pine needles, wild thyme, and camphor, bathing the entire cowl and its hanging implements in dense aromatic smoke forty-nine times while reciting the names of mountain stability, acknowledging Gaialilith as the foundation of living stone.
- Sprinkle three drops of clean subterranean cave water across the nephrite jade medallion to awaken the acoustic matrix, allowing the cloth to absorb the herbal vapors for one full hour.
- Roll a d20 to verify the final crafting outcome: a result of 2 through 19 confirms standard crafting success, yielding an item resilience rating of 10 and a maximum hit point pool equal to the wearing avatar’s base plus 10; a result of 20 imparts an exceptional lithic resonance, granting a permanent +1 bonus on checks made to assess geological instability and avoid subterranean cave-ins; a result of 1 represents a catastrophic failure of the resin matrix, causing the Tier 1 crystal to shatter into non-magical dust and requiring replacement of the catalyst.
- Step 1: Fiber Blending, Dyeing, and Quilted Cowl Assembly:
Cowl of the Honeycomb Brow, Seven-Fold Sapping of Black Mountain, and Dervish Who Listened to Ribs of World
In the primal overturning of the spheres, when the great golden lantern Helios was driven like an iron spike into the high zenith of heaven, fixed forever at the eleventh hour so that the shadow of a spear might never stretch out upon the dirt, and the swollen, violet belly of the sky-beast VaporSphere hung over the jagged horizons like the poisoned lung of a leviathan, the exiles fell. Out of the weeping mist of the upper firmament they did tumble, cast down upon the jagged scree of northern and eastern Saṃsāra like gravel shaken from a leather sieve. Their skulls were not broken upon the stones, for Gaialilith, the gray mother who is the moon itself, received their fallen weights into her lap of shale and pulverized slate; yet by the immutable decree of the unremembered gods, their inward memories were scrubbed raw with the bitter soda of oblivion, so that a man looked upon his pickaxe and knew not whether it was an implement for bread or a weapon for fratricide.
Now in that second turning of the ages, upon the high, wind-gnawed mountain island which the ancient, worm-eaten glyphs designate as Badakhshan-of-the-Iron-Marrow, there lay a vast and terrible mountain of black diorite and flint, known to the frightened souls of the fallen as The-Peak-of-the-Groaning-Bones. Deep within the root of this mountain, five hundred cubits beneath the light of Helios, there slept the richest vein of skystone, azure lapis, and virgin meteoric iron ever conceived in the belly of the world. It was a treasure vast enough to plate the walls of forty imperial capitals with beaten blue metal and purchase the lives of a hundred thousand bondmen; yet no mortal soul had ever dug deeper than thirty spans without being crushed into grease, for the mountain was treacherous, quick with venomous breath, and filled with the shrieking of shifting stone.
In those years there ruled over the pit-heads of that island a sovereign of grievous pride, whose name the corrupted scroll hath transcribed as Khan Rustam-of-the-Brazen-Mattock. He was a man with a beard like iron wire and shoulders like a stone gate, whose personal avatar was endowed with immense sinew and wrath, yet whose inward eye was darker than a plugged well. The Khan looked upon his empty treasure-vaults and upon his five thousand bondmen who were breaking gray slate for bread, and he cried out in his arrogance: Shall an inanimate heap of black rock withstand the lord of forty quarries? The earth hath no soul; it is only a dumb donkey that refuseth to walk until it is flayed with an iron rod! We will drive thirty great tunnels through the belly of the peak; we will light fires of mountain cedar against the granite until the rock splitteh with heat, and we will batter the veins with iron sledges weighing ten talents, until the blue stone poureth into our carts like grain from an overturned bin!
Wherefore the Khan gathered four thousand miners, rock-heawers, and sappers from among the fallen souls. They dragged great battering rams tipped with forged steel into the dark; they built massive timber scaffoldings of green pine, and they lit roaring fires of pitch against the stone faces, dousing the red-hot diorite with cold brine to crack the bedrock. For six seasons the mountain groaned like a bull in a slaughterhouse. The valley was filled day and night with the suffocating soot of burning pitch and the deafening thunder of iron striking rock.
Yet the Khan’s engineers were blind to the holy nature of the moon Saṃsāra. For beneath the crags of Gaialilith there are no sluggish, dead shelves of stationary granite that drift by inches over millenia; rather, the great mother’s guts are liquid fire and boiling mineral vapor, and her subterranean chambers are linked in delicate acoustic harmony. And whenever the purple monster VaporSphere drew near in the heavens, its monstrous weight sucked upon the subterranean cauldrons, making the rock-masses bend and groan like bowstrings drawn to the ear.
When the shadow of the gas-orb fell across the peak, turning the yellow noon of Helios into a dreadful, bruised violet, the bowels of the mountain could bear the insults of the iron sledges no longer. The rock did not merely crack—it exploded with the concussive fury of a thousand ballistas, an occurrence which the ancient mountain dialect calleth The-Teeth-of-the-Earth. The green pine shoring timbers were snapped like dry barley straw; the pressurized firedamp that slept in the porous shale was ignited by the torches, turning the drifts into roaring chimneys of flame; and a ceiling slab weighing twenty thousand cartloads dropped into the central adit. In a single heartbeat, eight hundred miners were flattened into red meal. Their physical forms did not rot in the dark, but in accordance with the law of the exiles, their bodies dissolved into vast, shrieking plumes of purple sparks that drifted through the cracks of the stone until nothing remained of them upon the bloody gravel save their dented copper caps and empty iron boots.
Then did Khan Rustam rip the silver embroidery from his coat and howl into the smoke: The mountain is inhabited by a thousand devils of madness! The rock hath swallowed my gold and spat my people into the sky as violet embers! We are cursed to dwell in poverty upon this dung-heap of stone!
Now there was dwelling in the cold gravel at the mouth of the ruined shaft a solitary dervish of the Pamir line, whose name in the coarse, broken strokes of the slate roll is written as Ustād Borhan-Who-Heareth-the-Seam. He was an avatar of the first tier, barren of seed and slender of wrist, whose coat was of greasy yak felt that had been torn by the mountain briers. While the Khan’s captains had screamed and whipped the sweating ditch-diggers, Ustād Borhan had sat upon a stone block at the portal of the pit. He carried neither sledgehammer nor oil flask. He sat with his bare heels tucked beneath his thighs, holding between his teeth a sprig of wild mountain mint, his eyelids lowered as if in slumber. Yet he did not sleep; his chest rose and fell in the measured, four-fold cadence of the deep breath (habs-i dam), and his tongue moved without sound in the perpetual remembrance (dhikr), counting the vibrations of the mountain’s bones as the subterranean pressure passed through the stone beneath his rump.
The Khan, riding up upon a foaming black mule amidst the weeping of the widows, saw the dervish sitting upon his stone, sliding beads of wild wood through his fingers. The Khan spat upon the dust and roared: O thou hollow skull with the dirt upon thy knees! Why dost thou sit here murmuring to thy belly while my treasury is turned to gravel and the bodies of my sappers are blown out of the mountain like purple smoke? Can thy dry throat shore up a collapsing roof that hath splintered forty pine pillars of five spans’ girth?
Ustād Borhan arose, shaking the gray rock dust from his ragged sleeves. He spoke in the measured, quiet tongue of the mountain kankans (rock-heawers), saying these lamentably translated words: O sovereign whose hands are heavy like anvils, thou hast approached the ribs of the living earth as a butcher approacheth a carcass, seeking to carve her marrow with iron sledges and fire. But Gaialilith is not a carcass to be hacked; she is a singing harp of stone, and her strata are strung with sacred tension. When an unskilful fool striketh the strings of a harp with an iron cudgel, the harp doth not give music; its strings snap and tear out the eyes of the player. Thy wooden pillars were stiff and boastful, wherefore the mountain broke their spines; and thy miners dug in ignorance of the grain, striking the rock where it was weary rather than where it was willing. If thou wouldst walk through the belly of the mountain and bring forth the blue fire of the lapis without drowning thy soul in purple sparks, thou must lay aside the fire-setting and the iron sledge. Thou must weave the quilted mantle of the honeycombed arch, which is the harness of the resonant drift, and learn to ask the stone for passage.
The Khan laughed with a bitter sneer, crying: What cloth can turn the weight of a falling mountain? Go then, beggar of the adit, and if thy bonnet doth not save thee from being squashed like a beetle beneath the central slab, I will feed thy skin to my hounds!
Wherefore Ustād Borhan went forth into the high crags to assemble the substance of the work.
First, he went unto the high stone pastures where the wild yaks graze upon the frozen moss, and he gathered thirty measures of the soft down that groweth beneath their bellies, and forty measures of the dense wool of the mountain sheep of the Pamirs, and five-and-twenty lengths of the tough raw silk of the mountain mulberry worms. He steeped these strands in an earthen vat with the crushed green husks of black walnuts and the fine dust of native graphite, until the fibers were dark like the slate of an unlit cavern. Upon a small wooden frame, he did weave a close-fitting cowl to encompass the skull, temples, and neck, lining its belly with mountain linen that had been boiled in camphor crystals, wild mountain thyme, and oil of menthol, that it might draw away the heat of the head and cool the throat against the dry sickness of the silica dust. And across the outer shell, using a needle of hardened bone and a wire of fine-drawn red copper, he quilted an unbroken web of overlapping diamonds, wherein every stitch crossed its fellow to create a net for the scattering of blows.
Second, he went unto the dry gorge of the high screes, where the flash-floods of ten thousand winters had rolled the dark stones, and he hewed out a tablet of dense, black nephrite jade, dark like the skin of a water-leech and oily to the touch. Upon the face of this stone, using a burin of star-steel, he carved the five tiers of the muqarnas—which the ancient translator calleth the-vaulted-cells-of-the-hanging-honeycomb—so that each recessed niche rested upon the shoulders of the two beneath it, mimicking the distribution of the great arches of heaven; and he burnished into the sunken cells the golden flour of struck iron pyrite and the red dust of dark cinnabar, bound with the gum of the mountain almond. But behind this plate, in a hollowed bed three fingers wide, he set a flawless, uncut jewel of smoky amber-and-gold sky-glass, which was a talisman of the first tier, dropped from the mane of a subterranean tremor; and he bedded the stone in the thick sap of alpine pines mixed with the powder of bog-iron and flakes of pure graphite, that it might never shake loose from its alignment with the bones of the earth.
Third, he took four ounces of red river bronze, smelting it over an almond-wood brazier, and he cast two cylindrical chime-bars three fingers in length, tuning their voices with a stone file until they rang with the exact harmonic fifth of the living granite. He hung these bars beside his ears from straps of oil-tanned goat-skin, and upon his right cheek he bound a four-inch testing chisel of forged carbon steel, and upon his left cheek an unbroken loop of ninety-and-nine beads turned from the tough hornbeam and the heart of the wild apricot, separated into three measures by six cold-forged washers of raw iron.
Lastly, he passed the entire garment through the thick smoke of alpine pine needles, mountain thyme, and raw camphor forty-and-nine times, chanting the names of lithic balance until the wool and the jade smelled of high cold forests and clean springs.
When Ustād Borhan did don this cowl about his head, fastening the bronze buckle beneath his chin, behold, a wondrous silence fell upon his brain. His skull, which had throbbed from the heat of the sun, became cool as if bathed in snow. The suffocating dust of the pit-mouth ceased to torment his nostrils, for the camphor-lining drew forth the sweet breath of the high peaks, turning the foul air of the drift into a clean draft of mountain pine. His eyes, looking into the pitch-black mouth of the collapsed tunnel where no torch could burn for lack of air, saw not darkness, but a soaring world of amber, golden, and cinnabar vectors tracing the great lines of pressure through the mountain’s ribs. The bronze chime-bars and the iron washers did strike together with every nod of his brow, clink-tap, clink-tap, making an acoustic sound like an armorer tapping a breastplate in an empty vaulted hall; and through the contact of his forehead against the stone, the mountain ceased to be a deaf brute and spoke unto him with its inward voice: Here I am weary, touch me not; here I am sound, lean upon me; here sleepeth the fire-breath, wake it not.
Ustād Borhan walked down alone into the central collapsed adit, where the air was black with sulfur and eight hundred miners lay sleeping in purple sparks. He took neither oil lamp nor shovel. He held only his four-inch steel testing chisel and an iron hammer of three pounds’ weight.
He climbed over the shattered timbers until he stood beneath the great central ceiling slab—a hanging mass of sixty cubits’ length that groaned with a sound like grinding teeth, held by only two trembling points of crumbling shale. Behind that slab lay the great pocket of blue skystone; but between the dervish and the treasure hung forty thousand tons of death.
The Khan’s captains, watching from the sunny portal, shouted through speaking-horns: Come back, thou madman, for the air is poisoned and the slab is falling!
Ustād Borhan did not turn his head. He pulled his cowl tight about his temples. The jade muqarnas flared with a steady, lantern-like glow of amber fire, lighting the cracked diorite with the sacred geometry of the honeycomb.
He looked upon the great stone ceiling with his Mind’s Eye. He did not see a shapeless mass; he saw the lines of shear, the glowing threads of compression, and the small, secret keystone—no larger than an ox’s hoof—where all the weight of the mountain was gathered into a single knot.
He approached the stone wall at the side of the drift. He set the point of his forged-steel testing chisel against a hairline fissure no thicker than a horsehair. He raised his hammer. He did not strike with the fury of a warrior; he struck with the measured, delicate tap of a goldsmith, vocalizing from his belly a single, high-pitched harmonic tone: Al-Haqq!
Behold, the bronze chime-bars beside his ears rang out in piercing unison with the stone! A sharp shockwave of amber light rolled thirty paces through the diorite strata. The rock did not shatter with explosive violence; it gave a low, contented groan, and along the hidden crystalline cleavage planes, a clean fracture opened. A mass of unworked ore three cubits thick split away from the vein like a slice of ripe cheese falling from a knife, crashing to the tunnel floor in clean, manageable blocks, while the overhead ceiling did not shake by the thickness of a fingernail!
Then, as the dervish reached out to touch the exposed vein of azure lapis and meteoric iron, the hour of the conjunction arrived.
The gas-orb VaporSphere moved across the noon-lamp Helios, casting its terrible, bruised purple twilight over the mountain of Badakhshan. From the deep belly of Gaialilith came that shuddering roar which the ancient miners named The-Convulsion-of-the-Boiling-Marrow. The bedrock twisted like a wetted bowstring; the mountain dropped three finger-breadths; and the great central ceiling slab, torn free from its shale anchors by the sudden tremor, dropped like an iron portcullis directly upon Ustād Borhan’s head!
The watchers at the adit mouth screamed and covered their faces, crying: The dervish is mashed into red porridge!
But Ustād Borhan did not perish.
At the instant the crushing slab fell, he raised his two hands to his ears, and with a sharp, silent, wordless downward pull, he tugged the rawhide tabs of the chime-bars, tying the Silent Web of the Shoring Ward.
An instantaneous dome of shimmering amber-and-gold geometric honeycomb lines burst forth from the nephrite jade muqarnas, spreading twenty feet in every direction across the drift.
When the forty thousand tons of diorite struck that web, the crushing momentum did not flatten his bones! Behold, the kinetic shock was caught by the golden facets of the honeycomb; five-and-twenty parts in every hundred of the downward blow were absorbed and extinguished in a shower of harmless golden sparks that smelled of camphor and ozone, while the remaining burden was shunted laterally along the amber vectors, discharged directly into the deep, unyielding basalt pillars of the side walls! The great slab groaned, its fall was arrested three spans above the floor, and it wedged itself fast between the walls, converted by the sacred proportions of the cowl from an engine of death into an unyielding, permanent ceiling vault!
Then, while the purple eclipse still darkened the sky, Ustād Borhan took between his fingers the ninety-nine beads of hornbeam and apricot wood. He walked along the line of trembling pine props that remained in the drift, pacing with a slow, measured cadence, chanting the ancient attributes of lithic stability: Yā Thābit, Yā Matīn, Yā Qayyūm.
With every step he took, the bruised timber props did not merely stand; the living resonance of the chant passed into the dry wood. The pine fibers hardened until they were dense like the heart of green oak; their joints locked together with the masonry as if they had grown from the bedrock over forty winters. The subterranean groaning ceased; the drift became as still and silent as the interior of an imperial tomb; and the sweet air of the pine-cowl pushed back the suffocating damp, filling the shaft with the clean, dry breath of the high Pamir peaks.
When Helios returned to the center of heaven, shining down with his yellow lamp, Ustād Borhan walked out of the tunnel mouth. He did not run; he walked with the steady, unhurried stride of a master builder leaving a finished mosque. Behind him lay the open drift, clear, sweet-scented, and securely vaulted; and piled upon the gravel of the portal were forty wagon-loads of pure blue skystone and virgin meteoric iron, chipped from the vein with the light tapping of a four-inch chisel.
The Khan Rustam cast himself from his black mule and fell upon his face in the rock-dust before the feet of the dervish. The Khan wept, tearing his beard, and offered unto him his gold-hilted scimitar, his royal signet, and half the revenue of the forty quarries.
Ustād Borhan took neither the royal scimitar nor a single copper scrap from the treasure-wagons. He unbuckled the bronze clasp from beneath his chin, wiped the sweat from his neck with his camphor-scented linen, and drank a single cup of cold spring water from a miner’s wooden bowl.
He spoke unto the Khan, saying these words: Keep thy gold, O sovereign, to purchase grain for the children of the eight hundred who died in thy pride, and melt thy heavy battering rams into wedges and chisels. For the subterranean realm of Gaialilith is not a fortress to be stormed with shouts and heavy sledges, but a sacred house of proportion. He who striketh the mountain with wrath and iron shall find only cave-ins, fire-damp, and purple sparks, and his works shall be buried beneath his own folly; but he who entereth the adit with the breath of patience, the chime of harmony, and the humble geometry of the honeycomb shall find the stone his protector, and the deep earth shall pour forth her treasures into his hands in peace.
And having spoken these things, Ustād Borhan gave his quilted cowl into the keeping of the miners’ lodge, and he walked away into the high stony passes where the yaks dwell, alone and unencumbered. And throughout the four Ages of Saṃsāra, the tunnel-masters did take the measure of that sacred headgear, stitching the yak wool, carving the black nephrite, and tuning the bronze chime-bars, even unto the three-hundred and thirteenth iteration, which continueth to guide the sappers and save the miners from the crushing burden of the dark across the islands of the moon.
The moral of the story is that brute force, greedy haste, and arrogant violence will only bring down the crushing wrath of the earth upon the heads of the foolish, whereas patient contemplation, reverent listening to the hidden tensions of nature, and the humble mastery of architectural balance can turn the most terrifying depths of danger into an unyielding sanctuary of safety and enduring abundance.

- Physical Protection: Provides 1 point of localized physical armor to the investigator’s head, temples, and neck against falling stone, crushing cave-in debris, and melee attacks; provides no protection against modern firearms or high-velocity ballistic weaponry.
- Mental and Spiritual Toll:
- Initial Binding Ritual: Attuning to the cowl requires a successful Occult, Science (Engineering), Science (Geology), or Art/Craft (Mining) check during a one-hour seated meditation in total darkness with the jade medallion pressed against raw bedrock, accompanied by the expenditure of 1 permanent Magic Point and an immediate Sanity check (0/1D3 Sanity loss) as the investigator’s mind harmonizes with the subterranean seismic heartbeat of the earth.
- Mental Anchoring: The steady acoustic ticking of the bronze chime-bars and iron washers, combined with the cooling camphor and thyme aroma, reduces any Sanity loss suffered from witnessing cave-ins, claustrophobic subterranean entombment, or deep-earth aberrations by 1 point (to a minimum of 0).
- Passive Modifiers and Inherent Capabilities:
- Mīzān of the Resonant Seam: When surveying subterranean tunnels, mine drifts, foundation strata, or karst formations, the investigator receives one Bonus Die on Architecture, Art/Craft (Mining), Science (Engineering), and Science (Geology) rolls made to identify structural stress points, detect hidden gas pockets (firedamp or sulfur), or locate hollow chambers within thirty feet of solid rock.
- Purity of the Deep Breath: The cowl maintains a continuous filtration field across a two-foot radius around the face. The investigator is completely immune to choking rock dust, coal-dust inhalation, and nausea caused by low concentrations of sulfur gas, subterranean damp, or volcanic ash. Pulverized airborne dust and soot within this radius rapidly settle to the floor as inert sediment.
- Acoustic Percussive Cleavage: Hand tools (picks, wedges, sledgehammers) wielded by the investigator deal +25% structural damage against natural rock, ore veins, and mineral-carapace entities, while generating 50% less concussive vibration to adjacent ceiling strata.
- Active Spells and Arcane Operations:
- Somatic Resonant Cleave (The Chisel Ping):
- Magic Point Cost: 2 Magic Points.
- Casting Time: 1 combat round (executed by striking the steel testing chisel against rock while vocalizing a single harmonic pitch).
- Resolution: Discharges a focused acoustic shockwave through rock strata across a 15-yard radius (expanding to 30 yards if the true geological name of the rock stratum is spoken). Stone along natural cleavage planes fractures cleanly, dislodging up to one cubic yard of ore or dressed stone blocks. In combat, striking a stone floor forces all adjacent enemies within 5 yards to succeed on an Extreme DEX or Dodge check or be knocked prone by seismic shock.
- Silent Web of the Shoring Ward:
- Magic Point Cost: 2 Magic Points.
- Casting Time: 1 combat round (executed as an instantaneous, wordless reaction by yanking downward on the chime-bar tabs).
- Resolution: Projects an instantaneous kinetic dampening field across a 5-yard radius. When a ceiling collapse, falling boulder, or blunt crushing impact threatens the area, crushing damage inflicted on the investigator and all adjacent allies is reduced by 25%, shunting the concussive force into adjacent walls.
- Chant of the Living Timber (Unyielding Stope):
- Magic Point Cost: 5 Magic Points.
- Sanity Cost: 1D3 Sanity points.
- Casting Time: 10 minutes of uninterrupted throat-recitation while sliding the ninety-nine hornbeam beads along mine timbering, an archway, or a rock pillar.
- Resolution: Infuses up to four adjacent timber props or stone arches. For twenty-four hours, the supports double their structural build threshold and gain resistance to ground-shocks and concussive blasts. A Fumble (96–100) causes energetic backfire, cracking the shoring props immediately.
- Somatic Resonant Cleave (The Chisel Ping):
- System Drawbacks and Operating Hazards:
- Audible Ticking Footprint: The suspended bronze chime-bars and iron washers clink rhythmically against the steel chisel with every stride. Any Stealth roll made to move quietly suffers one Penalty Die unless the tools are bound firmly with cloth (which suspends the armor value and active powers while bound).
- Catalytic Fragility: If an active spell roll results in a Fumble, the internal quartz catalyst fractures under energetic feedback. The investigator takes 1D3 points of physical shock damage to the head, and the cowl loses all magical properties until repaired by an artisan.

- Silent Shoring Ward:
- Stress Cost: 1 Stress.
- Resolution: When a cave-in, blast backfire, or crushing trap triggers, the scoundrel tugs the chime-bar tabs wordlessly. The scoundrel improves their resistance roll against the consequence by one step, or reduces the severity of the incoming crushing harm by one level for themselves and all adjacent crewmates.
- Rite of the Unyielding Stope:
- Stress Cost: 2 Stress.
- Resolution: During a score or within downtime, the scoundrel performs rhythmic throat-chanting while sliding the ninety-nine beads along mine timbers or an archway. Fate Core and Fate Condensed
The Kankan’s Cowl of the Resonant Adit
- Core Aspect:
- Name: Kankan’s Cowl of the Resonant Adit
- Description: A miner’s quilted hood and neck-mantle tailored from mountain sheep’s wool, yak down, and raw silk, kettle-dyed a dark charcoal-slate with fermented walnut rinds and graphite powder. The outer shell is quilted in an impact-dissipating diamond grid with fine-drawn copper wire, while the inner lining is mountain linen infused with camphor, wild thyme, and menthol. Over the forehead rests an arched medallion of black nephrite jade carved in the receding honeycomb tiers of a muqarnas vault, inlaid with golden iron pyrite and cinnabar, housing an uncut smoky quartz-amber Tier 1 crystal. Suspended from the cheek-straps and hem are two tuned bronze chime-bars, a four-inch forged-steel testing chisel, and ninety-nine beads turned from hornbeam and apricot wood, separated into three measures by cold-forged iron washers that tap rhythmically with every head movement.
- Invocation and Compel Dynamics:
- Invoking the Aspect: A character may spend a Fate Point (or invoke freely) when assessing the structural stability of mine drifts, surveying subterranean cavities, sapping fortifications, mining mineral veins without triggering cave-ins, resisting toxic mine damp, or bracing against concussive rockfalls.
- Compelling the Aspect: The gamemaster may offer a Fate Point to compel this aspect when the rhythmic clinking of the bronze chime-bars and iron washers betrays a stealthy approach in echo-prone tunnels, when the warm amber glow of the forehead jade plate alerts subterranean predators, or when a professional vow to preserve the mountain’s architectural balance forces the engineer to halt and shore up an unstable tunnel during a frantic escape.
- Protective Value and Stunts:
- Cranial Deflection Guard:
- Mechanics: The copper-quilted yak-wool mantle and nephrite jade brow-plate provide Armor:1 against physical melee strikes, flying shrapnel, and crushing stone debris targeting the head, temples, and neck.
- Chthonic Respiratory Ward:
- Mechanics: The wearer is completely immune to non-magical subterranean choking dust, coal-dust irritation, and nausea caused by mild concentrations of sulfur gas, damp, or volcanic ash. Airborne rock dust within the character’s zone settles rapidly to the floor as inert sediment.
- Mīzān of the Resonant Seam:
- Mechanics: The wearer gains a +2 bonus to Notice, Crafts, or Lore when actively inspecting subterranean tunnels, rock walls, foundation strata, or karst formations to identify shear-stress points, locate hollow cavities, or detect trapped gas pockets within thirty feet of solid rock.
- Acoustic Percussive Cleavage:
- Mechanics: When using mining hand tools (picks, sledges, chisels) to attack stone barriers, excavate ore, or strike creatures formed of earth or stone, the character gains a +2 bonus to Crafts or Fight to overcome physical barriers or inflict stress.
- Somatic Resonant Cleave:
- Mechanics: Once per scene, the character may spend an action to strike the steel testing chisel against rock while vocalizing a single resonant harmonic pitch, rolling Crafts against Mediocre (+0) difficulty. On a success, they place the situation aspect Acoustic Cleavage & Shaken Footing on the zone with one free invoke (two on a style). Up to one cubic yard of stone fractures cleanly along natural cleavage planes, and all adversaries standing on the stone floor in the zone must overcome an Average (+1) Athletics obstacle or be knocked prone.
- Silent Shoring Ward:
- Mechanics: Once per scene, when the character or an ally in the same zone is subjected to physical stress from a ceiling collapse, falling boulders, or blunt crushing trauma, the character may spend a Fate Point and tug the chime-bar tabs wordlessly. This immediately creates a defensive advantage with two free invokes, reducing the incoming stress of the triggering crushing event by 2 shifts for all targets in that zone.
- Rite of the Unyielding Stope:
- Mechanics: By maintaining ten minutes of continuous throat-chanting while sliding the ninety-nine beads along mine timbering, archways, or rock pillars, the character rolls Crafts with a +2 bonus. On a success, they place the situation aspect Unyielding Mine Shoring on the tunnel section with two free invokes. The fortified supports gain Armor:2 against cave-ins, concussive blasts, and settling tremors for the duration of the scenario.
- Cranial Deflection Guard:
- System Drawback:
- Audible Rhythm: The bronze chime-bars and iron washers strike the steel chisel continuously during movement. Any Stealth roll made to move quietly suffers an automatic -2 penalty unless the wearer takes an action to tie down the implements with cloth (which suspends the armor value and all active stunts while bound).

Stone along natural cleavage planes fractures cleanly, dislodging up to 1 cubic yard of solid rock or ore without overhead damage. Each creature standing on the stone floor within a 15-foot emanation of you must succeed on a DC 19 Reflex save or fall prone.
- Shoring Ward’s Knot [reaction]:
- Traits: Concentrate, Primal.
- Trigger: You or an ally within 15 feet takes bludgeoning damage from a cave-in, falling rocks, or a crushing trap.
- Requirement: You give a sharp, wordless downward tug on the chime-bar rawhide tabs.
- Effect: A shimmering amber barrier dampens the concussive force. The triggering bludgeoning damage is reduced by 25% (or all affected creatures gain resistance 5 to the triggering damage, whichever reduces more damage), safely shunting the physical force into adjacent side walls.
- Chant of the Unyielding Stope (Exploration Activity, 10 Minutes):
- Traits: Auditory, Concentrate, Exploration, Primal.
- Frequency: Once per day.
- Effect: You maintain a continuous throat-chant while sliding the ninety-nine hornbeam beads along mine timbering, an archway, or stone pillars (up to four support structures). For 24 hours, the structures double their Hardness (to a maximum increase of +5) and Broken Threshold against washouts, settling tremors, and blast shockwaves.
- Somatic Resonant Cleave [one-action]:
- System Drawbacks and Operating Penalties:
- Audible Ticking: The suspended bronze chime-bars and iron washers click against the chisel with physical movement. You take a -2 item penalty to Stealth checks to Sneak unless you spend 1 minute securing the tools with cloth (which suspends the circumstance AC bonus and all active abilities while bound).
- Amber Radiance: When activated, the jade medallion sheds dim amber light in a 10-foot radius, making it impossible to remain completely hidden in unlit subterranean environments.
