Surveyors Waxed Measuring Cord Registry Designation 194833

From: Registratus

    • Tier Classification: Tier 2 (Uncommon).
    • Description: A dense, braided cord sixty feet in length, woven from coarse wool dipped in black pitch and beeswax, punctuated at exact one-cubit intervals by numbered brass beads stamped with the crest of Registratus.
    • Historical Lore: Crafted by guild cartographers during the territorial consolidation of the middle island monarchies, this measuring cord was traditionally laid along the earth to finalize disputed borders between state boundaries before permanent stones were set.
    • Inherent Properties: When worn wrapped securely around the torso across the sash slot, it grants the avatar a +2 bonus to passive perception and evaluation checks regarding geographic distances, structure elevations, and terrain boundaries.
    • Active Action: In combat encounters, the bearer may spend an action to fling the cord at a target within thirty feet; on a successful ranged attack roll, the cord wraps itself tightly around the target’s limbs, inflicting the Anchored condition and restricting all movement to within ten feet of the anchor peg until an action is spent to sever or unwind it.
    • Maintenance: If damaged in combat, the cord drops its individual brass beads upon reaching zero hit points and requires thirty minutes of alchemical restringing and beeswax recoating to restore its function.

Expanded Specifications for Registry Designation 194833

  • Specific Gear Slot:
    • Sash Slot, draping diagonally from the shoulder across the chest to the opposite hip and winding securely around the waist before fastening.
    • Because it functions as a sash-category piece of equipment, it utilizes a single primary gear slot while providing integrated anchor loops to suspend up to four small official insignia, guild badges, or municipal registry seals without consuming additional worn inventory slots.
  • Detailed Description:
    • Woven in a tight, eight-strand braid measuring exactly sixty feet when fully uncoiled, the cord possesses a consistent thickness of three-quarters of an inch and weighs four pounds.
    • The outer fibers of mountain ram wool are saturated with dark bituminous pitch and refined yellow beeswax, producing a weatherproof, semi-rigid texture that repels swamp water, ocean brine, and rain.
    • Every cubit is marked by a hollow, barrel-shaped brass bead swaged tightly into the weave, numbered sequentially from one to forty in clean, stamped block numerals beside the scale-and-quill sigil of Registratus.
    • Both terminals end in forged cast-iron survey pins four inches long, tipped with sharp grounding spikes that can be driven into timber, soil, or masonry to secure a measurement.
  • Expanded Historical Lore:
    • Commissioned by the Joint Cartographic Council during the regional mapping of the middle island monarchies, this specific cord was used to establish the neutral trade borders separating the coastal ports of Lupemban from interior state jurisdictions.
    • During the boundary disputes of year 8470a, rival warlords attempted to move boundary stones by night, but surveyors deploying this relic exposed the discrepancy down to a quarter-span, defusing an armed conflict between municipal garrisons.
    • Survived a shipboard fire off the reefs of Tashan when a commercial cutter ran aground, the cord being recovered from the surf with its pitch-wax coating intact and its numbering unaffected by sea foam.
    • It has been certified by five generations of municipal land courts, each Chief Surveyor scratching an official validation mark upon the brass collar of the fortieth cubit bead upon completing their tenure.
  • Inherent Attributes:
    • Physical Weight: 4 lbs.
    • Intrinsic Material Resilience: 10.
    • Armor Check Contribution: +1 AC to the equipping avatar (well within the statutory cap of 3 AC per tier for Tier 2 equipment).
    • Item Maximum Health: Avatar’s maximum hit points plus 20 hit points (derived from 10 resilience multiplied by Tier 2).
    • Damage Threshold State: Enters a broken state at or below 50% hit points, losing all magical bonuses and dropping its tautness; upon reaching 0 hit points, it splits into loose wool strands and scatters its forty stamped brass beads upon the ground.
    • Attunement Requirements: Synchronizes during a standard one-minute simple attunement, claiming one of the avatar’s maximum allocation of 10 openly worn attuned items.
  • Skills Gained While Carried or Equipped:
    • Cartographic Land Surveying (Trained Skill): Grants +2 skill points to identifying accurate geographic coordinates, measuring regional state boundary lines, and plotting transit paths.
    • Structural Forensics (Temporary Skill): Imparts +2 temporary skill points to Mind’s Eye appraisals when checking building stability, estimating structure volume, or calculating stone masonry thickness.
    • Navigational Appraisal (Trained Skill): Adds +1 skill point to navigation across road networks, canal transits, and coastal wharfs.
  • Multiple Passive Magics:
    • Invariant Standard:
      • The physical braid is mystically locked against environmental distortion, rendering it completely immune to stretching, thermal expansion, moisture rot, and shrinking caused by heat or cold.
      • When worn, the bearer is entirely immune to the Temporal Shifted condition, remaining anchored to the baseline timeline regardless of ambient chronal distortions.
    • Spatial Precision Aura:
      • While resting on the avatar’s shoulder and torso, the cord projects an invisible grid through the bearer’s Mind’s Eye, projecting precise distance increments out to sixty paces.
      • The avatar gains an automatic +1 attack bonus with all ranged weapons using mundane or magical ammunition by compensating for wind resistance, projectile drop, and physical range brackets.
    • Grounding Measure:
      • Grants the bearer advantage on saving throws against being forcefully pushed, pulled, or knocked prone by wind, magical shockwaves, or charging beasts, anchoring the wielder’s weight into the earth.
  • Multiple Active Magics:
    • Statutory Tether (Primary Offensive Action):
      • As an attack action, the bearer whips the cord forward up to thirty feet, requiring a roll to hit against the defender’s total Armor Check.
      • On a hit, the cord instantly wraps the target in glowing bands of pitch and brass, sinking its iron end-pin into the terrain and inflicting the Anchored condition.
      • The restrained creature cannot move further than ten feet from the anchor point and suffers disadvantage on physical attack rolls until it spends an action and succeeds on an opposed saving throw to unravel the cord.
    • Perimeter Baseline (Perimeter Ward Action):
      • By spending two actions, the bearer can unwind the full sixty-foot length along the ground to encircle a campsite, building entrance, or survey plot.
      • The inscribed line hums faintly, establishing an early-warning perimeter that instantly alerts the bearer through their Mind’s Eye if any invisible creature, burrowing pest, or unbonded avatar steps over the cord.
    • Measured Retraction (Reaction Utility):
      • If a companion within thirty feet is targeted by an area hazard, falling masonry, or a pit trap, the bearer may spend a reaction to snap the cord outward to snare the ally.
      • The bearer pulls the ally ten feet backward away from the danger zone, granting the companion advantage on any saving throw required to avoid the hazard.

Marketplace Channels and Valuation of the Surveyor’s Waxed Measuring Cord

  • Family-Run Cordage and Leatherworking Outfits:
    • Established within the artisan quarters of walled towns and secondary state cities, these small, specialized shops are operated by multi-generational ropemakers, tanners, and saddlers who tailor their crafting gear to meet the immediate practical needs of passing teamsters, caravan masters, and municipal building contractors.
    • Purchasing the item requires inspecting the physical braid directly at the workshop counter, where the prospective buyer uncoils the pitch-waxed wool to examine the hand-stamped serial marks on each brass cubit bead, confirming the item has sustained no fiber rot or frayed grounding pins.
    • Operating strictly within a sellers’ market driven by buyer-beware principles and localized scarcity, an independent craftsman in a landlocked state with few coastal trade connections will ask between 800 and 1,200 silver (equivalent to 80 to 120 gold) for the cord.
    • When selling the cord to an independent cordwainer, the merchant negotiates aggressively, applying a markdown of approximately 10% of the baseline valuation multiplied by the seller’s tier level (a 20% price reduction for a Tier 2 adventurer), extending an offer of roughly 480 to 650 silver (48 to 65 gold) that is credited directly into the seller’s World Bank balance while noting the transaction in regional merchant records.
  • Guildhall Quartermaster Depots and Surveying Guild Collectives:
    • Stationed inside the fortified municipal guildhalls in administrative seats and port capitals boasting over five thousand citizens, these authorized supply bureaus cater to guild-sworn road wardens, masonry overseers, and royal land surveyors.
    • Transactions here follow formal civic protocols; non-affiliated adventurers must pay the full listed appraisal rate, whereas registered guild members in good standing receive a mandatory 10% discount multiplied by their tier level (a 20% discount for a Tier 2 character).
    • In major transit hubs such as the central cities of Aterian or Badarian where road maintenance across monster-infested trade paths is actively financed by the crown, the base purchase price for the cord sits at approximately 1,000 silver (100 gold), which reduces to roughly 800 silver (80 gold) for accredited guild members paying via direct World Bank balance transfer.
    • Selling the relic to a guildmaster depot yields a dependable payout of about 600 to 750 silver (60 to 75 gold), requiring the seller to sign an official custody transfer scroll that logs the cord’s registration number in the municipal archive for future state property assessments.
  • Shadow Alley Fences and Unregistered Black-Market Dens:
    • Operating out of dark warehouse basements, forgotten dockside cellars, or secluded rural camps beyond the jurisdiction of royal patrols, these illicit brokers trade in gear taken from fallen avatars, unregistered dungeon salvage, and tools prized by underground tunnel sappers.
    • Business in these dens completely bypasses the World Bank; transactions demand physical, non-traceable metal coins—primarily heavy silver, electrum, or standard gold—which must be handled directly and stored inside personal extradimensional pouches to avoid drawing attention from city watchmen.
    • Purchasing the cord through an underworld broker carries an opportunistic markup because the item’s grounding ability and tethering magic are exceptionally useful for capturing bounties or anchoring targets during silent ambushes, pushing the retail price to between 1,500 and 2,000 physical silver coins (150 to 200 gold).
    • When an adventurer sells the cord to an outlaw fence who needs an untraceable restraint to bind targets without leaving magical spell traces, the buyer will ask no questions regarding ownership and may pay up to twice what a civic merchant would offer, handing over between 900 and 1,200 physical silver coins directly into the seller’s hands.
  • Technomantic Surveying Salons and Arcane Engineering Boutiques:
    • Situated along the bustling industrial thoroughfares of steam-powered metropolitan centers where technomancers, machinists, and railway surveyors draft plans for magical factories and airship docks, these workshops cater to professional architects and municipal project planners.
    • The proprietors inspect the cord with precision measuring tools and active Mind’s Eye scans, validating that the forty brass beads maintain proper galvanic resonance and that the wool has suffered no elemental singeing from steam pipe exhaust or volatile battery acid.
    • In elevated settlements such as Cloud City or mechanized industrial rail hubs where precise elevation mapping and anti-stretching gear command high utility, the cord sells at a premium of 1,200 to 1,600 silver (120 to 160 gold).
    • Selling the cord to an arcane engineer results in an official bank transfer of roughly 700 to 850 silver (70 to 85 gold), accompanied by an item inspection receipt verifying the structural integrity of the pitch-wax matrix and the sharpness of the forged end pins.

Environmental Deployment and Tactical Roleplay

  • Urban Alleys, Municipal Cobbles, and Confined Streets
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • While escorting a municipal clerk or retreating down a narrow brick alleyway from armed tax rioters, the bearer rapidly unwinds the cord across the road.
      • Driving the cast-iron grounding spikes firmly between the street cobblestones, the bearer establishes an illuminated boundary line using the Perimeter Baseline.
      • The line pulses with faint, low-frequency geometric light, granting the party an early warning the moment hostile pursuers round the street corner, while the wielder stands firm behind the line with improved stability against being knocked down or trampled by charging urban mobs.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • In pursuit of a fleeing pickpocket or an unlicensed black-market courier across a busy market avenue, the bearer uncoils the pitch-waxed cord from the sash slot.
      • Whipping the braid forward with a sharp snapping motion, the bearer executes the Statutory Tether action, aiming directly for the runner’s legs.
      • On a successful hit, the cord wraps snugly around the fugitive’s shins and thighs while the iron terminal pin embeds itself deep into the mortar of the cobbles, inflicting the Anchored condition, cutting off the target’s escape within a ten-foot radius, and leaving them open for city sentries to restrain.
  • Subterranean Mine Shafts and Low-Ceiling Caverns
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Navigating cramped underground passages where predatory beasts or cave stalkers drop from overhead fissures, the bearer wears the cord strapped tightly diagonally across the torso.
      • The Spatial Precision Aura projects invisible metric grids into the bearer’s Mind’s Eye, eliminating sensory disorientation in total darkness and measuring the exact height of the rock ceiling.
      • When a sudden cave-in occurs or a pit trap gives way beneath a companion’s boots, the bearer snaps the cord outward in a swift Measured Retraction reaction, hooking the companion by the harness and hauling them ten feet back to stable stone before they plunge into the abyss.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • When confronting burrowing horrors such as wild ankhegs or armored troglodytes in tight tunnels, the bearer uses the cord to restrict the creature’s flanking mobility.
      • Striking forward with an attack roll, the bearer wraps the beast’s mandibles or forelegs in the dense wool weave, grounding the iron spike into a rock cleft.
      • Bound within a ten-foot radius, the subterranean monster cannot utilize its burrowing retreat or retreat through tunnels, allowing ranged companions behind the bearer to pick it apart safely with distance strikes.
  • Coastal Wharfs, Reef Lanes, and Wet Ship Decks
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Standing aboard a trade caravel navigating turbulent sea lanes where heavy waves wash across the deck and westward ocean currents cause the hull to pitch violently, the bearer relies on the Grounding Measure.
      • The cord locks the bearer’s center of mass directly to the wet timber planks, granting advantage on saving throws to resist being washed overboard by rogue swells or knocked prone by swinging booms.
      • Because the dense wool is saturated in bituminous pitch and beeswax, the braid remains completely unaffected by salt brine, rot, or spray, ensuring its tensile strength never slips in humid sea storms.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • During shipboard boarding skirmishes with hostile corsairs clambering over the gunwales, the bearer whips the cord across the gangway.
      • Lashing an enemy captain or boarding brute around the torso, the bearer anchors the terminal iron spike into the ship’s oak mast.
      • The anchored raider is immediately held in place ten feet from the mast, unable to advance toward the helm or reach the ship’s wheel, while their physical attacks suffer disadvantage as the taut wool binds their striking arms.
  • Airborne Airships, Zeppelins, and Cloud City Catwalks
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Traveling along the open suspension bridges and exposed iron catwalks between floating mage towers at three thousand feet, strong crosswinds threaten to blow travelers into the open void.
      • The bearer loops the cord around the iron safety railing and anchors the pins, using the sash as a physical and mystical tether that prevents forceful displacement from sudden gusts.
      • If an aerial beast such as a rogue griffon attempts to snatch an ally from the catwalk, the bearer activates Measured Retraction as an immediate reaction, securing the companion and pulling them backward out of the diving predator’s talons.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • When repelling sky-pirates attempting to grapple their zeppelin to a merchant vessel, the bearer targets the hostile crewmen managing the boarding hooks.
      • Flinging the sixty-foot line across the gap between the hulls, the bearer entangles the opposing deck officer, anchoring the pin into the merchant vessel’s outer framework.
      • The tethered raider is dragged off-balance and pinned against the hull gap, preventing them from severing the merchant ship’s rigging and disrupting their boarding assault.
  • Wilderness Jungles and Ancient Wild Magic Scars
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • While hacking through dense, untamed vegetation where chaotic wild magic currents warp the terrain, the bearer uses the cord to establish a verified path.
      • The Invariant Standard property shields the bearer from temporal anomalies and spatial distortion fields, keeping the party on a true geometric trajectory through shifting terrain.
      • When establishing an encampment for the night, the bearer circles the bivouac with the sixty-foot line, providing early detection against creeping magical predators or venomous crawling insects that attempt to enter the campsite.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Facing fast-moving feral predators that use high agility to sprint through the dense underbrush, the bearer uses the Spatial Precision Aura to compensate for concealment and tree foliage.
      • Casting the tether into the brush with a precision ranged throw, the bearer loops the line around the beast’s hindquarters and anchors the spike into the root of an ironwood tree.
      • Deprived of its leaping momentum and restricted to a small circular patch of ground, the feral creature is immobilized, neutralizing its predatory speed and allowing the hunting party to bring it down cleanly.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • The dark, pitch-saturated fibers of the braid ignite with thin, violet seams of running light that crawl along every twist of the wool.
      • Each of the forty brass beads begins to glow from within, projecting sharp, neon-purple numerals and the scale-and-quill crest onto the surrounding surfaces.
      • A luminous geometric grid unrolls across the floor or ground, projecting glowing coordinate lines that segment every cubit of terrain into neat, illuminated tiles.
      • When deployed as a snare or boundary line, an ultraviolet wall of faint light rises three feet into the air directly above the cord.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Onlookers see the dull black cord suddenly flare with bright purple radiance as if hot coals were buried inside the braid.
      • Stamped numbers on the brass sleeves cast sharp, violet shadows across the room, illuminating the bearer’s boots and garments in cold, high-contrast light.
      • A complex web of glowing circles and intersecting grid marks manifests on the ground around the line, resembling an architect’s blueprint traced in glowing ink.
  • Sound:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • The moment the terminal iron spike is driven into the surface or the tether is whipped forward, a crisp, metallic snap echoes outward, sounding like a steel surveyor’s chain snapping taut.
      • A continuous, rhythmic clicking hum vibrates through the wielder’s bones, resembling the steady ratcheting of brass gears and the sliding of metal calipers.
      • Wind and ambient environmental noises within the measured circle soften slightly, replaced by a quiet, rhythmic ticking that marks each passing second.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Spectators hear a sound identical to a heavy bowstring releasing, followed immediately by the ring of an iron chisel striking stone.
      • A low-frequency hum emanates from the brass beads along the ground, creating a subtle acoustic pressure that makes the ears pop slightly when crossing near the perimeter.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • A warm, pungent aroma of melting pine pitch and heated yellow beeswax rises directly from the wool as the magic activates.
      • Beneath the natural wax scent, a distinct mineral smell of pulverized dry chalk and heated cast iron fills the nostrils, clear and sterile.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Those standing nearby immediately detect the heavy, unmistakable scent of fresh shipyard tar, bee hives, and hot metal.
      • Damp cavern odors, stagnant marsh air, and mold smells are briefly masked by the sharp, resinous vapors drifting off the braided fibers.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • A dry, honey-like waxiness coats the roof of the mouth, accompanied by a faint metallic tang resembling the taste of brass coins held between the lips.
      • The tongue experiences a dry, alkaline sensation similar to inhaling fine limestone dust during a quarry survey.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Individuals caught inside the activated tether or standing along the perimeter line report an odd, bitter aftertaste of dried ink and resin on their palates.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • The cord warms pleasantly in the hands, softening its stiff wax coating into a smooth, supple texture that molds comfortably to the bearer’s grip.
      • A subtle, rhythmic vibration pulses through the braid, syncing directly with the wielder’s pulse and providing a steadying, anchoring sensation.
      • The bearer feels completely grounded, as if their center of gravity has been pulled down and secured directly into the foundation of the earth.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Any hostile entity struck or bound by the tether feels an unyielding, rigid constriction comparable to heavy iron bands, with the fibers remaining cold and completely resistant to stretching or flexing.
      • Stepping across the glowing grid produces a sharp static tingle across the skin, causing hair on the limbs to stand on end.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Metric Distance Transference:
      • The user’s Mind’s Eye instantly receives continuous, automated distance readouts, overlaying precise numbers across every physical obstacle, target, and elevation within sixty feet.
      • Line-of-sight angles, missile arc trajectories, and exact terrain elevations are calculated instantaneously, eliminating spatial guesswork during ranged targeting.
    • Cadastral Boundary Awareness:
      • The bearer experiences an intuitive, planar awareness of land ownership, sensing whether the territory they occupy is municipal land, royal estate, guild commons, or contested wilderness.
      • Intruders who step across the measured baseline register in the bearer’s mind as sharp, red blips on an internal spatial compass, revealing their exact direction and stride length.
    • Chronal Anchoring:
      • The surrounding environment feels mathematically stabilized, dispelling any lingering temporal disorientation, motion sickness from sea travel, or vertigo caused by high altitudes.
  • Positives:
    • Imparts immediate, infallible situational awareness of distances, ranges, and perimeter breaches without relying on visible torches or noisy vocal signals.
    • Provides non-lethal, highly effective crowd control and target immobilization by inflicting the Anchored condition on evasive foes or dangerous beasts.
    • Stabilizes the bearer’s physical footing against knockdowns, violent waves, turbulent winds, and environmental displacement effects.
    • Completely immune to weather rot, stretching, humidity decay, and waterlogging due to its protective pitch-wax saturation.
  • Negatives:
    • The bright ultraviolet illumination and glowing geometric ground markings instantly compromise concealment in dark subterranean passages or night operations.
    • Deploying the cord as a boundary or wide tether consumes significant preparation time and physical line management, requiring actions to unwind and coil properly.
    • Severe physical damage can sever the braid, scattering the forty numbered brass beads and disabling its functions until alchemical repair and restringing are conducted.
    • Restricting an agile enemy to a ten-foot circle still leaves them free to make ranged attacks, throw weapons, or cast spells within that radius.

Recipe: Braid of the Cadastral Surveyor

  • Materials Needed:
    • Sixty feet of clean, eight-strand coarse wool sheared from an alpine ram, washed of grit and oil.
    • Two pounds of refined yellow beeswax combined with one pound of distilled pine pitch.
    • Forty hollow, barrel-shaped brass beads cast with an inner channel three-quarters of an inch in diameter.
    • Two forged cast-iron surveyor pins, each four inches long with a tapered ground spike and a flat striking head.
    • One Tier 2 magic crystal (approximately the size and weight of an apple), harvested from an adult beast or construct to serve as the power catalyst.
    • Half a pint of tree-specific resin sap, drawn fresh using a fluid collector from an ironwood or mountain cedar tree.
    • One ounce of finely powdered lapis lazuli ground with pulverized river chalk for runic channel pigment.
    • Two drams of certified court-grade gall ink for inscribing legal marks upon the brass sleeves.
  • Tools Required:
    • One fluid collector (syringe-style alchemical extractor) for tapping tree resins.
    • An iron braiding rack equipped with tension weights and guide hooks.
    • A stone-mason’s notched cubit measuring stick calibrated to the standard municipal foot.
    • A metal punch set with block numerals from one to forty alongside a stamp bearing the scale-and-quill crest of Registratus.
    • A bronze brazier and wax-melting iron cauldron with pouring ladle.
    • A jeweler’s hand vise, swaging mandrel, and brass-headed rivet hammer.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Leatherworking & Weaving: Trained skill level of at least 7 (meeting the threshold of skill level 5 plus 2 for a Tier 2 item).
    • Runecraft & Inscription: Trained skill level of at least 7 to correctly punch, align, and empower the numbering across all forty brass beads.
    • Alchemical Crafting: Trained skill level of at least 5 to balance the pitch-wax immersion bath without burning the natural wool fibers.
    • Mind’s Eye Competency: Ability to verify dimensional tension and inspect numerical statistics during the binding process.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1 (Wool Preparation and Braid): Secure the eight strands of mountain ram wool to the tension rack; weave them into a tight, circular eight-strand rope precisely three-quarters of an inch thick and sixty feet long under uniform counterweights.
    • Step 2 (Catalyst Pulverization and Resin Infusion): Crush the Tier 2 magic crystal in an iron mortar until reduced to uniform sand; mix the crystal powder with the freshly harvested ironwood sap in a heated stone crucible to form a stable arcane medium.
    • Step 3 (Immersion Bath): Melt the beeswax and pine pitch together in the cauldron over moderate coals; stir in the alchemical crystal resin until fully dissolved, then draw the entire sixty-foot wool braid slowly through the hot pitch bath three times, ensuring complete saturation to achieve water repellency and anti-stretch rigidity.
    • Step 4 (Bead Numbering and Inscription): Mount each of the forty brass beads in the jeweler’s vise; using the steel punch set, stamp the scale-and-quill crest on one side and sequential block numerals from one through forty on the reverse, rubbing powdered lapis lazuli and chalk into the impressions to ensure visibility.
    • Step 5 (Spacing and Swaging): Lay the waxed braid straight along the calibrated cubit measuring stick; slide the stamped brass beads onto the rope, swaging each bead tightly into place at exact one-cubit intervals so they cannot slip or rotate under tension.
    • Step 6 (Terminal Forging and Pin Mounting): Insert the frayed terminal ends of the rope into the hollow collars of the two cast-iron surveyor pins; compress the collars using the swaging mandrel and rivet them securely through the pitch-soaked core.
    • Step 7 (Runic Sealing and Attunement): Inscribe the outer brass collar of the fortieth bead with the maker’s mark in certified gall ink, then strike both iron end-pins into the ground while channeling mana through the Mind’s Eye to lock the item’s resilience at 10 and establish its Tier 2 Armor Check rating.

Forty Brass Knots and Division of Turnip Hollow

In the first age of walking upon the damp surface, before the island kings had learned to fasten iron collars upon their hounds, the earth of the western valley was soft like cold bread dough. It is set down upon the broken tile of the lower water-cistern that in that province which is called Lupemban—though in the primitive throat the sounds were merely two clicks of the cheek and a wet coughing—there lived two men of great wealth in fat bullocks and hairy hogs.

The first holder of the hogs was called Grendok of the Hill Slope, whose ancient inscription reads “He Whose Elbows Smell of Roasted Lard.” The second holder of the bullocks was called Val-Huran of the River Bend, whose title among the weed-eaters was “He Who Counts the Teeth in His Neighbor’s Donkey.”

Between the pig yard of Grendok and the clover ditch of Val-Huran, there ran a hollow ditch filled with wild yellow turnips. These were not the small sweet roots that the town wives boil with honey, but large, bitter turnips as hard as river gravel, which give a hog great strength in the snout and cause a bullock to drop two calves in the third moon.

When the warm rain fell and the turnips grew their green ears out of the black dirt, Grendok came down from his oak grove carrying four sticks of mountain ash tied together with the dry guts of a goat. He stuck one stick into the mud where a dead toad was lying, and he declared to all the men who were carrying dung in wicker hampers that from that toad to the weeping birch tree was his ground, because his second uncle had once shot a crow there with a blunt hazel arrow.

Then came Val-Huran, riding upon an old grey cow that had only one horn, and his nephews walked behind him carrying two dead pike fish upon a pole. Val-Huran threw one dead pike into the mud twelve paces beyond the toad, and he shouted with a voice like a bronze pot rolling down stone steps that his mother’s sister had sat upon that very dirt sixty years ago to pare her thumb-nails, and therefore the turnip hollow, the worms beneath the turnips, and the beetles crawling upon the turnips belonged to the family of the cow-riders.

Because neither man could write upon a skin, and because the dialect of the river people sounded like pebbles falling into a wooden bucket while the dialect of the hill people sounded like pigs choking upon wild pears, neither party could understand what the other party was swearing. Therefore, the nephews of Val-Huran began to swing the dead pike by their tails, striking the dung-carriers across the ears, while the dung-carriers threw wet turnip tops until the ditch became very brown and foul to smell.

For seven days they hit one another with clods of turf and ash boughs. Five hogs were stolen and roasted with their hides on. Three cows ran into the thorn bushes and tore their bags. Whenever the sun went down behind the mountain, the two chiefs sat upon their heaps of dirt and howled like dogs whose feet have been pinched by cartwheels, yet neither would take his toes off the turnip furrow.

In the middle of the eighth night, when the planet VaporSphere was as white as a grease-lamp and the frogs in the ditch were singing their dry rattle, a sound came down the cart-track that was not the clatter of wood nor the splashing of swamp water. It was a rhythmic snapping, like the striking of dry grass with a wet leather thong, accompanied by the clinking of small brass pots.

Out of the night fog came a man who had neither beard nor hair upon his cheeks, and his skin was the color of an old parsnip that has spent the winter in a root cellar. He wore a long smock of bleached nettle cloth that was clean of pig dirt, and across his chest from his left bone to his right belly there was wound a rope as black as wet shoe-leather, smelling powerfully of the insides of a bee-skep and the boiled pitch that sailors use to stop up the bottom of a coracle.

The ancient translation upon the tile says his name was Mar-Tiber the Exact, though the letters are shaped like little bird-tracks and may signify “He Who Refuses to Eat Until the Beans are Symmetrically Piled.”

Grendok jumped up from his heap of cow dung, raising an ash club that had four nails driven through the end. “Who comes walking through the turnip leaves in clean nettle cloth? Give me your boots, or I will beat your skull until it is flat like a buckwheat pancake!”

Val-Huran also ran forward, sliding in the wet weed and waving his two-foot iron cleaver. “This dirt is the blood-soil of my grandfather! Any man who walks here without paying a basket of wild cherries shall have his ears nailed to the ash tree!”

Mar-Tiber did not draw an iron blade, nor did he hide his parsnip-colored face behind a wicker hurdle. He unhooked the black rope from his shoulder with very slow, cold fingers. He reached into his leather pouch and pulled out an iron hammer with two square faces, and he held it up before the moon so that both chiefs could see that it was completely level on the striking cheeks.

“Here is a scream without a ledger,” the nettle-clothed man said, and his voice did not go up and down like the shouting of men, but came forth flat and square like dry laths falling upon a floor. “Here are thirty-four paces of black loam covered in bruised turnip skins, yet neither the office of the regional bailiff nor the court of the middle islands has received the one-tenth tithe of the peelings. You have split the crowns of four dung-carriers, yet no restitution chit has been stamped by the magistrate. Your words are rotten gourds. The boundary must be laid down in pitch and lead.”

Before Grendok could raise his ash club, the scribe took the sharp iron spike that was fastened to the first end of the black braid and drove it into the soft earth right through the dead toad with one blow of the square hammer.

A great noise came out of the dirt, like forty iron needles being dropped onto a stone threshold. The forty brass beads along the rope began to shine with an unnatural purple grease, each bead showing a round sign that looked like a bird sitting upon an iron scale.

Mar-Tiber did not look at the angry men. He took the black cord and walked toward the weeping birch tree. As he stepped, the rope uncoiled behind him without a single tangle, as straight as a spear of mountain iron, and wherever the pitch-soaked wool touched the weeds, the blue thistles laid themselves flat and the bitter turnips stood in rows of eight, facing the east.

When he reached the fortieth cubit, he stopped beside the birch tree. He took the second iron spike and drove it into the root of the tree with two sharp strokes: clack-ping.

The cord did not sag into the mud. It drew itself as tight as the bow-string of a city hunter, humming with a noise that made the bullocks stop chewing their grass and caused the hair upon Grendok’s hairy chest to stand out straight through his woollen smock.

“Behold the statutory line,” said the parsnip-faced man, putting his square hammer back into his sack. “On the north side of the fortieth knot, the dirt belongs to the house of the hog-keeper, who shall pay three measures of winter barley to the collector at the mid-year bell. On the south side of the fortieth knot, the dirt belongs to the house of the cow-rider, who shall deliver four hides of cured ox-leather to the harbor stores before the first snow falls upon the mountains. The twenty feet between the knots is the lane of the sovereign monarch. If a pig crosses the line, the pig is forfeited to the crown. If a bullock sticks its nose across the brass beads, its horn shall be sawed off by the beadle.”

Grendok of the Hill Slope was an ignorant man who had never seen an abacus, and he believed that what cannot be eaten may be broken with a club. He roared like a rutting boar, ran forward three paces, and swung his nail-studded ash branch directly at the middle brass bead, which bore the number twenty upon its sleeve.

The moment the wood touched the waxed wool, there was no sound of breaking timber. Instead, the purple light that lived inside the bead ran up the ash stick like a fiery viper. It struck Grendok through the thumbs, ran down his arms, and went into the heels of his boots.

The chief let out a squeal like a pig under a gate. He did not fall down, but his knees became as stiff as dry cedar posts. His feet were fastened to the damp loam as if seven blacksmiths had riveted his leather shoes to the very bones of the world. He could move his chin, and he could roll his eyes toward the clouds, but he could no more bend his thigh than a man can bend an iron anchor with his teeth.

“You have assaulted the cadastral standard,” the voice of Mar-Tiber fell upon the ear like gravel sliding down a chute. “You are anchored to the twentieth cubit. Your radius of nutrition is five spans from your hip. You shall stand upon this spot until the sun has made three full journeys across the sky, so that you may meditate upon the difference between forty paces and forty-one paces.”

Val-Huran saw this and dropped his iron cleaver into the turnip tops. He fell down upon his belly in the ditch, smearing yellow turnip juice across his white smock, and began to speak very politely in the high language, though he only knew three words of it, which he had heard from a wool-merchant who had once stayed in his barn.

“Lord of the Cord,” Val-Huran stammered, “I am a poor man with many daughters and very few cows. Take two hogsheads of turnip ale! Take the grey cow with the one horn! Only do not drive your iron peg through my tongue, for I must use it to sell dried beef to the sailors.”

The scribe did not look at the cow. He reached down, gathered up the slack of the cord between the forty beads, and tightened the braid with a leather wrench until it hummed like a hornpipe.

“A gift of ale is an illegal addition to the surveyor’s purse,” Mar-Tiber spoke, drawing his net of bleached nettle cloth about his narrow ribs. “It is an uncertified transfer. Keep your one-horned cow, but if your nephews gather one turnip from the king’s middle lane, the cord shall be stretched around their necks until their breath has the circumference of an acorn cup.”

Then the man of the high courts did not run away, nor did he ask for a bite of bacon. He left the cord stretched tight between the dead toad and the weeping birch tree, humming in the cold moonshine, and he walked back up the cart-track toward the high stone towns where the houses have chimneys and the people wash their fingers before they eat mutton.

For three days Grendok stood beside the twentieth bead, unable to sit down, while his nephews brought him turnip water in a broken bowl and his wife sat on the fence and scolded him for his hot temper. And when the third day was ended at the setting of the white star, the purple light went back inside the brass sleeve with a sound like a bee going into a hole, and Grendok fell forward into the nettles, his knees so stiff and rusty that he walked like a wooden puppet for two years afterward.

From that hour to the season when the great sea broke through the sand hills, neither the house of the hog nor the house of the cow ever moved an iron peg. And whenever a youth of that country wished to marry a maiden or sell three yards of coarse homespun, he walked to the birch tree, laid his elbow against the brass beads, and checked his measures three times lest the cold parsnip-man should come back with his square hammer to fasten his boots to the dirt forever.

Moral of the story: A club may fell an ox and a loud voice may frighten the crows, but forty brass knots upon a waxed string will outlive the anger of ten generations; therefore, do not pull up your neighbor’s ditch-fence until you have counted the cubits twice and kept your silver ready for the land-warden.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

The Cadastral Binding Cord (Relic of Metric Order)

  • Sanity Cost to Attune or Deeply Scrutinize: 1/1d3 Sanity points upon observing the chronal stillness and hyper-precise geometry of the brass bead increments.
  • Armor Value: When wound around the torso across clothing, provides 1 point of physical armor against blunt trauma and projectile lacerations.
  • Skill Modifiers: Bestows an inherent +15% bonus to Navigate, +10% bonus to Accounting, and +10% bonus to Spot Hidden when estimating land boundaries, elevation variances, or structural distances.

Properties and Ritual Enactments:

  • Spatial Awareness (Passive): The bearer cannot be temporally displaced or disoriented by non-Euclidean angles or shifting maze topography, gaining an automatic Hard success threshold on checks to avoid becoming lost in subterranean ruins.
  • Snare of the Surveyor (Cost: 6 Magic Points, 1 Sanity point): The user snaps the cord at an adversary within 10 yards. The investigator engages in an opposed DEX or Throw roll against the target’s Dodge. If successful, the cord coils tightly around the subject, driving an iron terminal pin into the surface. The target is anchored to that spot and cannot move beyond a 3-yard radius unless they succeed on an opposed STR roll against the cord’s STR of 75 (15 for an Extreme success) to free themselves.
  • Enforce Perimeter Baseline (Cost: 4 Magic Points): Laying the 20-yard cord along the ground creates a subtle geometric alarm ward. Any entity entering the enclosed zone immediately alerts the bearer via an internal psychic bell, regardless of whether the intruder is obscured by natural darkness or supernatural invisibility.

Blades in the Dark

The Cadastral Sash (Uncommon Arcane Implement / Mobility & Restraint Gear)

  • Load: 1 Load (Braided wool cord worn diagonally across the torso with brass fittings).
  • Tags: Arcane, Restraint, Survey, Precise.

Mechanics and Operational Abilities:

  • Invariant Measure (Passive): You cannot be involuntarily pushed, pulled, or knocked off-balance by sudden tremors, shifting ship decks, or blast shockwaves. When resisting physical displacement consequences, take +1d to your Resistance roll.
  • Spatial Survey (Setup / Info Gathering): When examining an architectural space, canal boundary, or infiltration perimeter, roll Survey or Attune with +1 Effect. You immediately identify structural load points, exact distances, and hidden structural drop-offs.
  • Cadastral Snare (Action / Crowd Control): When you whip the cord to bind a fleeing target or anchor an opponent within 10 paces, make an Action roll using Finesse or Prowl.
    • Critical: The target is completely bound and pinned to the floor by the iron spike; they cannot break free without specialized heavy tools.
    • 6: The target is Anchored within a short stride of the pin, suffering -1d to all offensive actions until they spend an action to unbind the cord.
    • 4/5: The target is snagged, but at a cost: take 1 Stress, or the target drags the pin loose enough to pull you off-balance.
    • 1-3: The line snags on an environmental hazard or snaps back, inflicting a complication or putting you in a desperate position.
  • Measured Retraction: You may spend 1 Stress as an immediate reaction to snap an ally within 10 paces backward away from an environmental collapse, trap trigger, or lethal fall.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition / 2024 Revision)

The Surveyor’s Waxed Measuring Cord Wondrous Item (Sash), Uncommon (Requires Attunement)

  • Armor Class: While worn securely across the chest as a sash, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
  • Invariant Standard: You are immune to any effect that would cause you to age magically or alter your position in time, and you have advantage on saving throws against effects that would knock you prone or push you against your will.
  • Precision Targeting: You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls made with ranged weapons. In addition, you have a +2 bonus to passive Wisdom (Perception) scores regarding spatial distance, elevation, and terrain boundaries.
  • Statutory Tether: As an action, you make a ranged weapon attack with the cord against a Large or smaller creature within 30 feet, using your Dexterity modifier for the attack roll. On a hit, the cord wraps tightly around the creature’s limbs and its iron ground pin anchors into the terrain. The creature gains the Restrained condition and cannot move more than 10 feet away from the anchor point. A creature restrained by the cord, or an adjacent ally, can use its action to make a DC 13 Strength check, freeing the restrained creature on a success.
  • Perimeter Baseline: As an action, you lay the 60-foot cord along the ground to enclose a space. The cord remains active for up to 8 hours. While active, you are mentally alerted whenever a creature enters the corded area, even if the creature is invisible or traveling underground.
  • Measured Retraction: When a visible creature within 30 feet of you is subjected to an effect that allows a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you can use your reaction to pull the target 10 feet toward you. If this movement pulls the creature out of the area of effect, it takes no damage instead.

Knave (2nd Edition)

The Surveyor’s Cord

  • Item Slots: 1 Slot (Worn diagonally across the body as a sash or belt).
  • Armor Bonus: +1 Armor.
  • Durability: 4 Quality (Splits into loose thread and beads if reduced to 0 Quality).

Properties and Dungeon Exploration Actions:

  • True Measure: The bearer automatically knows the precise distance, elevation, and geometric dimensions of any passage, room, or chasm up to 60 feet.
  • Solid Grounding: The wielder has advantage on all Strength and Dexterity saves against falling, tripping, or being shoved backward by wind, water, or physical charges.
  • Snaring Cast: As an attack action, throw the cord at a creature within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a Dexterity save or become immobilized and tethered to the ground within a 10-foot radius. The target can break the tether by spending an action and succeeding on a Strength save (target number 14).
  • Camp Baseline: Laying the cord in a circle around an encampment acts as a magical alarm. Any creature stepping across the line causes the brass beads to emit a sharp ringing sound, instantly waking anyone resting inside the perimeter.

    • Statutory Tether (Action): The user whips the cord at a target within short range (up to 50 feet / 15 meters) as a Speed-based attack against the target’s level. On a hit, the cord wraps the target and sinks its iron spike into the surface, inflicting the Paralyzed/Immobilized condition within an immediate distance (10 feet / 3 meters) of the pin. The target cannot move beyond this area until it uses an action to attempt a Might-based task against the artifact’s Level 4 to sever or untie the cord.
    • Perimeter Baseline (Action): By taking two actions to lay the 60-foot cord along the floor, the user creates an early-warning boundary. For the next 8 hours, any creature (including invisible or subterranean entities) crossing the threshold triggers a silent mental alarm in the wielder’s mind.
    • Measured Retraction (Reaction): When a visible ally within immediate range is targeted by a physical area hazard, collapse, or trap, the user can expend a Speed action as an immediate reaction to snap the cord, pulling the ally 10 feet out of the danger zone and easing the ally’s defense roll by two steps.
