Lore: In the high, frost-rimed peaks of Saṃsāra, where volcanic vents choke the air with sulfur and blizzards freeze breath instantly, the indigenous tribes do not fight the elements; they endure them. These tribes honor the “Pebble-Eater,” a localized spirit inhabiting the hardy, stone-consuming mountain goats of the region. Local shamans construct these jaws as symbols of ultimate hardy resistance. They believe that by spiritually consuming the essence of hardship—represented by small, attuned stones—the wearer can inherit the spirit’s metabolic immunity to environmental extremes. It is said the first Pebble-Eater Shaman walked through a lava flow by chewing on a basalt ember.
Description: This item is a necklace composed of thick, braided mountain goat sinew and wool, dyed dark ochre. The centerpiece is the lower mandible of a giant mountain goat, polished smooth and scrawled with spiraling faint green runes inlaid with crushed malachite. Three large, deep molars remain set in the jawbone. Hanging from the bone by separate leather thongs are three smooth, river-washed quartz pebbles. When activated, the jawbone hums softly, and the teeth catch a faint emerald light.

Specific Slot:
- Neck Slot (worn as a heavy necklace).
Passives Magic:
- Sure-Footed Enduring: The wearer gains an intuitive understanding of stability. While this jaw is worn and active, the avatar receives +1 to all mental checks made to resist being moved against their will, knocked prone, or succumbing to exhaustion caused by environmental traversal (such as forced marches or high altitude).
- Metabolic Savor: The spirit aids in digesting hardship. The wearer ignores the flavor of any consumed substance, no matter how foul, bitter, or spicy, though this does not prevent actual poisoning or internal damage from inedible substances.
Activable Magics:
- Pebble-Eater’s Mastication (Action Cost: 1 Full Action): The avatar breaks one of the three hanging quartz pebbles from the necklace and places it between the molars of the goat jawbone. As they bite down with force, the jaw releases a spectral ‘chewing’ echo. The wearer gains immunity to one of the following non-magical, natural environmental conditions for 1 hour: blistering desert heat, sub-zero cold, suffocating volcanic smog, or severe wind-blown stinging sand. Only one condition can be resisted at a time. The broken thong regrows, and the pebble reappears daily at dawn.
- Spiritual Regurgitation (Action Cost: 1 Action): As an act of violent expulsion of harmful internal elements, the avatar releases a loud, echoed spiritually-charged ‘belch’ or cough directly toward one targeted non-magical natural element within 15 feet. This force extinguishes small, non-magical fires (like torches or campfires), disperses a 5-foot sphere of non-magical fog or smoke, or causes loose pebbles to scatter.

Procurement, Liquidation, and Market Valuation of the Pebble-Eater’s Jaw
Municipal Apothecaries, Trapper Guilds, and Herbal Dispensaries
- Environment and Structure: Established within the paved lower districts and perimeter merchant rings of metropolitan island capitals, these legitimate mercantile outlets operate out of timber-framed, slate-roofed shopfronts. Managed by licensed members of local trappers’ consortiums, wilderness survival guilds, or certified apothecaries, the interior spaces are dense with hanging drying racks of mountain herbs, cured pelts, bone-carving tools, and glass jars filled with mineral tinctures. The air carries the sharp scent of cedarwood, bitter drying roots, and mutton tallow, catering to expedition outfitters, government survey teams, and caravan escorts preparing to cross dangerous regional frontiers.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Purchasing the talisman in an urban apothecary requires a standardized exchange recorded in the shop’s formal ledger for municipal excise accounting. Payment is processed either via direct balance debits through the world bank or in standard minted silver coinage. If the buyer holds recognized accreditation with an allied survey expedition or an accredited hunting guild, an institutional discount equal to 10% multiplied by the avatar’s tier level is applied. Under stable supply conditions, the retail cost for the jawbone necklace sits between 75 silver to 110 silver, though prices climb when unseasonal blizzards or severe volcanic ash clouds disrupt trade routes through mountain passes.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: When an avatar liquidates an intact jawbone talisman to an urban guild merchant, the shopkeeper inspects the density of the goat mandible, checks the three molars for structural fractures, and verifies that the braided sinew has not decayed from dampness. The merchant applies the universal trade deduction, discounting their purchase offer by roughly 10% of the baseline worth multiplied by the avatar’s tier. A seller can expect to receive between 35 silver to 55 silver deposited into their world bank account, accompanied by an entry of the avatar’s name and registration credentials in the municipal acquisition register.
High-Altitude Waystations, Caldera Trailheads, and Mountain Caravanserais
- Environment and Structure: Perched along jagged mountain passes, wind-scoured ridges, and the rocky trailheads of active volcanic calderas, these fortified frontier outposts are constructed from thick, dry-stacked granite blocks reinforced with heavy pine timbers to resist blizzards and seismic tremors. Run by hardened mountain guides, retired highland trappers, or nomadic indigenous clans, these packed waystations stock snowshoes, climbing ropes, smoked goat meat, and specialized cold-weather talismans. Talismans like the jawbone are hung openly from wooden pegs behind the bar or pinned above hearthstones alongside sheepskin coats and ice axes.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Acquiring the item in a high-altitude outpost involves direct haggling across a scarred wooden trestle with a proprietor who knows the survival value of elemental endurance. Because these remote trailheads operate beyond the reach of municipal telegraphs and institutional ledgers, world bank transactions are entirely unavailable. Buyers must render payment in physical currency—such as bags of mixed copper and silver, electrum ingots, or locally stamped trade chits—or through direct barter utilizing dried rations, lamp oil, or fine steel climbing hardware. Because mountain travelers facing sudden sub-zero gales or sulfurous crater vents will pay dearly to survive, asking prices range between 11 gold to 17 gold (or 22 to 34 electrum), with standard guild discounts ignored unless the buyer is a blood-sworn kin member of the local highland tribes.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: Trailhead factors readily purchase functional jawbone necklaces to re-equip passing mountain guides, high-altitude scouts, or sulfur miners whose equipment has broken down under harsh conditions. The payout is settled immediately in loose physical coins, durable travel provisions, or cold-weather animal hides. An avatar selling the item receives between 5 gold to 8 gold in hard physical coin, completely exempt from provincial trade taxes and gate tithes due to the post existing beyond municipal jurisdiction.
Clandestine Den-Pits, Smuggler Warrens, and Black-Market Fences
- Environment and Structure: Tucked away inside damp cellar warrens beneath port wharves, disused drainage conduits under fortress cities, or the backrooms of unregulated mining-camp taverns, these shadow dens operate beyond the reach of municipal marshals and royal tax collectors. Managed by cutpurses, unlicensed grave-tappers, or black-market fences, these hidden spaces are lit by low tallow grease lamps and filled with illicit contraband. The jawbone necklaces found here are untracked salvage: taken from avatars who froze to death in uncharted mountain passes, looted from highland ancestral burial cairns, or smuggled across island maritime borders to avoid frontier import tariffs.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Gaining entry to a shadow exchange requires a personal vouch from an established under-city contact or knowing the week’s countersign. Transactions are conducted strictly under the principle of caveat emptor, offering no guarantee that the jaw’s quartz pebbles have not had their elemental attunement burned out or cracked by reckless usage. Paper receipts and world bank transfers are strictly forbidden. Buyers must settle trades exclusively in hard, unmarked gold coins, platinum dust, or uncut raw gems, with black-market prices hovering between 14 gold to 20 gold. Guild memberships and merchant credentials hold no sway here.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: When an avatar sells a recovered jawbone necklace to a black-market fence, they are guaranteed absolute anonymity, with no questions asked regarding where the item was obtained or whose fallen avatar provided the bone. If the fence supplies illicit smuggling teams that must trek across treacherous volcanic wastes or frozen tundra away from watched roads, they pay a premium. An avatar can negotiate an immediate cash payout of 8 gold to 12 gold in unrecorded physical currency, bypassing state sales taxes, border tithes, and world bank scrutiny entirely.
Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Pebble-Eater’s Jaw
High-Altitude Glacial Ridges and Frozen Scree
- Defense: When traversing sheer, frost-glazed precipices during a blizzard where exposure and treacherous footing threaten to wipe out a party, the wielder relies on Sure-Footed Enduring. The passive grounding provides unmatched physical stability against biting gale winds and sheer drops, granting resilience against falling prone or succumbing to hypothermic exhaustion. By activating Pebble-Eater’s Mastication and biting down on an attuned quartz pebble to ward against sub-zero temperatures, the avatar can trek unhindered through knee-deep snowdrifts and sub-zero squalls without requiring bulky furs that hamper mobility.
- Offense: When engaging mountain predators, ice constructs, or hostile cliff-dwellers who use the steep terrain to their advantage, the avatar employs Spiritual Regurgitation. By positioning themselves along a narrow ledge or ridge, the wielder unleashes the spiritually-charged acoustic belch toward an enemy’s position. The concussive expulsion blasts loose frost, shale, and fractured mountain scree into the target’s face, disorienting them, blinding their vision, or sweeping their footing out from beneath them over a sheer precipice while the wielder remains rooted to the stone.
Sulfurous Volcanic Calderas and Fissure Vents
- Defense: In volcanic badlands where active geothermal vents belch thick sulfurous clouds, hot ash, and toxic subterranean gases, environmental breathing hazards can suffocate an expedition within minutes. The bearer activates Pebble-Eater’s Mastication against suffocating volcanic smog. As the jaw releases its spectral chewing echo, the user breathes normally amidst the lethal yellow vapors, moving safely across steaming magma plains to scout paths or extract rare mineral cores without succumbing to lung damage or sensory disorientation.
- Offense: In encounters with flame-born beasts or cultists around active caldera shrines, the wielder uses Spiritual Regurgitation defensively to nullify the enemy’s resources. The avatar can target sacred brazier flames, weapon torches, or creeping ember-lines within fifteen feet, blowing them out in an instant with the spiritual expulsion. The concentrated gust scatters hot cinder beds directly back toward opposing combatants, burning their skin and disrupting their spellcasting preparations.
Scorched Arid Basins and Desert Dune Seas
- Defense: When crossing vast salt basins or waterless dunes where daytime temperatures cause heatstroke and hallucination, the avatar activates Pebble-Eater’s Mastication against blistering desert heat. The spirit within the goat jaw regulates the avatar’s internal temperature, sparing them water depletion and heat exhaustion during forced marches. Simultaneously, the Metabolic Savor passive allows the character to swallow foul, alkaline well-water or bitter desert-succulent pulp without vomiting, ensuring basic survival when palatable provisions run dry.
- Offense: During an ambush by desert raiders or burrowing chitinous horrors in soft sand, the wielder utilizes the jaw’s concussive release offensively. When a sand stalker attempts to encircle the party, the user triggers Spiritual Regurgitation directly into the dune face beneath the creature’s limbs. The shockwave displaces loose sediment, causing a localized sand slip that buries the attacker’s claws, collapses subterranean trap-pits, and strips away natural sand-camouflage by churning up a five-foot blinding curtain of grit.
Stagnant Boglands and Fallow Fens
- Defense: Deep within dense swamps where thick, stagnant mists blanket the water and putrid bog water breeds parasitic rot, the avatar relies on Metabolic Savor to ingest bitter medicinal mosses and rank field broths to stave off systemic fatigue without physical revulsion. Furthermore, when trapped in waist-deep mire where the suction of the mud pulls travelers under, the Sure-Footed Enduring passive provides mental and physical resolve to resist being pulled down or toppled by lurking aquatic stalkers.
- Offense: Facing marsh raiders or bog spirits that rely on ambient mist and heavy smoke screens to obscure their skirmishers, the wielder unleashes Spiritual Regurgitation directly into the fog bank. The spiritual burst immediately disperses a five-foot sphere of the obscuring haze, exposing hidden archers and severing the line-of-sight concealment of enemy skirmishers. If fired directly at an approaching melee creature wading through the fen, the expulsion violently kicks up stagnant water and acidic mud into the target’s eyes, breaking their charge and leaving them exposed to counter-strikes.

Perception of Activation:
Sight
- User’s Perspective: Upon breaking an attuned pebble and placing it between the goat molars, the wielder sees the carved runes along the bone flare from a dull mossy green into a radiant, incandescent emerald glow. Translucent, spiraling green wisps rise from the jawbone, curling upward around the user’s neck and chest like a protective spectral yoke. Looking outward, environmental hazards—such as scorching heat shimmer, sub-zero vapor plumes, or sulfur clouds—develop a subtle green outline, marking them as non-threatening forces whose edges can be easily read.
- Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers witness the three molars set in the mandible catch a sudden, phosphorescent emerald light that pulses in sync with the necklace’s soft hum. The three quartz stones dangling beneath the bone flicker with an internal golden-white fire, and a faint, spectral haze shaped like the horned head of a mountain beast flickers over the wearer’s shoulders before sinking into their skin.
- Positives: The cool emerald luminescence provides enough light to illuminate the ground immediately at the wearer’s feet without blinding night-adapted vision or casting harsh shadows.
- Negatives: In deep darkness, caves, or blizzard-veiled nights, the vivid green flare makes the wearer instantly conspicuous to distant predators or hostile scouts.
Sound
- User’s Perspective: The sharp crack of the pebble being bitten down upon gives way to a rhythmic, heavy grinding sound directly inside the user’s skull—resembling granite boulders slowly rolling against one another under tremendous pressure. When Spiritual Regurgitation is loosed, the user’s throat resonates with a concussive, low-frequency guttural bellow that feels like a mountain shelf splitting in two.
- Observer’s Perspective: Nearby companions hear an uncanny, amplified chewing noise—a dry, percussive stone-on-stone crunch—emanating from the necklace itself despite the wearer’s mouth being closed. The expulsion produces a booming, resonant bark resembling the warning grunt of a massive goat amplified through a cavern echo chamber.
- Positives: The sudden concussive roar of the activation shockwave momentarily masks verbal commands, party movement, or the sound of shifting weapons from nearby hostiles.
- Negatives: The grinding crunch and resonant acoustic belch reverberate down confined tunnels and off cliff faces, carrying over vast distances and alerting territorial beasts.
Smell
- User’s Perspective: The air immediately purges all localized stench, replaced by the crisp, dry mineral aroma of crushed granite, wet slate, and wild mountain moss. Even when standing in a sulfur pit or a rotting swamp, the wearer’s nostrils fill only with the sharp, clean scent of high-altitude limestone dust.
- Observer’s Perspective: Those standing within five feet catch a faint, brief whiff of ozone, chalk dust, and dry animal fleece, as though a herd of highland beasts had just brushed past in a dry wind.
- Positives: Stagnant mire rot, methane vapors, and toxic sulfur fumes are entirely filtered out of the user’s perception, preventing nauseating sensory distraction.
- Negatives: The distinct, mineral scent of crushed limestone and dry wool is utterly foreign in humid lowlands or deep sea environments, leaving an olfactory trail for scent-tracking hunters.
Taste
- User’s Perspective: The tongue is coated in a dense, chalky sensation resembling powdered limestone and cold spring runoff. As the pebble dissolves spiritually, a distinct earthy tang—like licking a smooth river pebble on a frosty morning—settles in the throat, stripping away all bitterness, sourness, or spice from anything swallowed afterward.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers perceive no direct taste, though they may note the user reflexively swallowing hard or working their jaw as though grinding down an obstinate piece of gristle.
- Positives: Nullifies nausea from swallowing rank swamp water, chewing bitter medicinal herbs, or consuming foul expedition rations during survival emergencies.
- Negatives: Completely desensitizes the palate to rotten or spoiled foodstuffs, stripping the user of the natural instinct to spit out tainted meats or chemically caustic substances.
Touch
- User’s Perspective: A sudden, petrifying heaviness settles into the wearer’s boots and legs, making their limbs feel dense, solid, and rooted to the earth like carved basalt pillars. A localized, insulating shell of air wraps around the torso and throat, dampening the sting of gale winds, the bite of sub-zero frost, or the blister of open heat to a gentle, harmless pressure.
- Observer’s Perspective: Companions see the wearer’s stance snap into an unshakeable, rigid posture with their center of gravity visibly lowered, completely unmoved by buffeting wind gusts or shifting scree beneath their soles.
- Positives: Grants complete physical stabilization against slipping, sliding down icy gradients, or being knocked off balance by unexpected tremors.
- Negatives: The wearer feels a slight stiffness in their joints, making rapid, fluid acrobatics or delicate footwork feel heavier and slightly more deliberate for the first few seconds of activation.
Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- User’s Perspective (Highland Beast Inhabitation): The avatar experiences a subtle shift in spatial cognition, intuitively sensing the incline, friction coefficient, and micro-fractures of the rock beneath their boots. They perceive gravity not as a pulling hazard, but as an anchor holding them securely against the terrain.
- User’s Perspective (Elemental Rejection): The mind’s eye perceives incoming heat, cold, or toxic vapors not as damaging threats, but as mere ambient brushstrokes that glide around the body’s spiritual boundary like water over a duck’s oiled feathers.
- Observer’s Perspective (Weight of the Mountain): Sentient creatures nearby feel a sudden, instinctual impression of mass and immovable obstinance radiating from the user, as if trying to push the wearer would be like attempting to shove a boulder with bare hands.
- Positives: Eliminates the instinctive panic and vertigo associated with standing over high precipices, breathing thin air, or facing sudden volcanic ash surges.
- Negatives: The psychological feeling of being an unyielding mountain can foster stubborn overconfidence, causing the user to underestimate hazards that bypass purely environmental resistance, such as kinetic strikes or targeted magical curses.
Recipe: Carving of the Pebble-Eater’s Jaw
Materials Needed
- One lower mandible harvested from a mature giant mountain goat (sound, uncracked, and thoroughly bleached of organic tissue, retaining at least three solid rear grinding molars)
- Three ounces of raw mountain goat wool (cleaned, carded, and spun into thick, dense yarn)
- Four feet of cured mountain goat sinew (cleaned, stretched, and dried into heavy cordage)
- Three river-washed quartz pebbles (smooth, translucent, roughly the size of a plum pit, free of sharp fracture points)
- Three strips of cured rawhide (each eight inches long and one-quarter inch wide, for dangling stone tethers)
- One-half ounce of powdered malachite (ground to a flour-like consistency for emerald rune inlay)
- Two fluid ounces of refined willow sap binder (extracted via fluid collector from iron-bark or weeping willow trees)
- One-half ounce of powdered ochre clay (for staining and weatherproofing the wool braid)
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (ground into fine sand, serving as the arcane catalyst to bond with the mountain endurance spirit)
Tools Required
- Fine-tipped bone-carving burin or hardened iron scribe
- Hand-drill with small bone-boring bit (one-sixteenth inch diameter)
- Stone mortar and pestle for pulverizing malachite and ochre
- Fluid collector (standard syringe with needle for measuring and applying sap binder)
- Coarse and fine river-grit rubbing stones for polishing bone
- Linen buffing rag and small boar-bristle inlay brush
Skill Requirements
- Bonecarving / Osteomancy (Trained Level 2 minimum)
- Leatherworking / Cordage Weaving (Trained Level 1 minimum)
- Alchemical or Magical Crafting (Trained Level 2 minimum)
- Shamanic Lore / Spirit Pact Understanding (Trained Level 1 minimum)
Crafting Steps
- Bone Preparation and Polishing: Clean and scrape the goat mandible with the burin to remove all residual gristle. Rub the bone surface down with wet river-grit stones until the texture is silky to the touch, taking care not to loosen or damage the three rear grinding molars set in the jaw.
- Drilling Anchor Points: Using the hand-drill, bore two symmetrical holes through the upward branches of the mandible to receive the main neck cord. Drill three small, evenly spaced holes through the bottom ridge of the jawbone directly beneath the molar row to seat the dangling stone thongs.
- Engraving Spirals of Resistance: With the hardened scribe, engrave winding spiral runes representing immovable granite, high-altitude horns, and grinding teeth along both lateral flanks of the jawbone, maintaining uniform depth to prevent fracturing the bone wall.
- Malachite Inlay and Sealing: Pulverize the malachite stone in the mortar until it forms an ultrafine dust. Blend the powder with one fluid ounce of willow sap binder extracted via fluid collector to form a thick, emerald-colored paste. Pack this paste into the scored runes with the bristle brush, scraping the surface flush with a linen rag and setting it near low heat to cure.
- Braiding the Neck Yoke: Blend the carded mountain goat wool with sinew strands and ochre dust, braiding them together into a thick, resilient rope twenty-four inches in length. Thread the ends through the upper drill holes of the mandible, securing them with reinforced double-overhand stopper knots.
- Perforating and Tethering the Quartz: Drill a clean hole through the tapered tip of each of the three quartz pebbles. Thread a rawhide strip through each stone, knotting the bottom and tying the top ends securely through the three holes along the bottom ridge of the jawbone so the stones hang freely without colliding.
- Catalyst Seating and Spirit Attunement: Pulverize the Tier 1 Magic Crystal into fine sand and blend it with the remaining willow sap binder. Coat the base sockets around the three goat molars with this resonant mixture, sealing the arcane catalyst directly into the tooth roots.
- Final Shamanic Consecration: Hold the jawbone over an open hearth or cold mountain wind for ten minutes. Chant the ancient mantra of the Pebble-Eater while rhythmically tapping the quartz pebbles against the molars until a soft emerald hum rises from the carvings and the bone resonates with grounding spirit weight.
Great White Horn-Beast Mandible That Ate Hot Cinders and Did Not Die
In the very old turnings of the sky, when the great fire-star Helios was small and angry, the high mountains of the country of Saṃsāra were not quiet like sleeping grandparents. They were spitting red mud from their mouths, and the wind from the north did blow with teeth of blue ice, cutting the skin from the meat of all who did walk on two legs. The little clan of the High Scree did dwell in the cold clefts of the grey stones. They had no warm houses with iron doors, and their skins were thin like wet river-grass. When the great frost did come down from the clouds, their bellies did freeze like turnips in the soil, and when the yellow smoke did roll down from the burning mountains, the little children did cough their red blood into the dirt and did shut their eyes forever.
In that season of bad breath and cold stones, there walked a holy man of the rocks whose name was Teng-Nu, which in the former tongue of the mountain people did say “He Whose Throat Swallows Gravel.” Teng-Nu was not a maker of tall words, nor did he possess many fat sheep with soft wool. His knees were thick like cedar knots, and his teeth were ground flat like the millstones of the river-bank, because he had spent three hundred moons watching the great mountain goats that did dwell upon the bald cliffs where no grass did sprout.
The people did weep to Teng-Nu, saying, “The sky is a wolf that eats our limbs with frost, and the mountain is a dragon that chokes our throats with yellow sulfur. How shall we carry our baskets of dried goat-meat across the high pass when our lungs burst like dry bladders?”
Teng-Nu did not answer with his tongue. He did take his walking-stick of bent ash-wood and did climb up to the sharp ridge where the air is very thin and tastes of blue ice. There he did sit for seven days without moving his feet, watching the great grandfather of all the mountain beasts—a white horn-bull whose shoulders were wide like two hay-carts, who did not eat the soft green clover of the valleys, but did bite the hard quartz pebbles from the rock-crevice and did chew them with loud crunches, swallowing the cold stones as if they were sweet honey-cakes. When the sulfur-smoke came from the boiling earth-vents, the white horn-bull did not cough, but did breathe the yellow fog into his nostrils and did blow it forth as white steam, standing immovable upon the icy edge of the high drop.
Teng-Nu did bow his forehead three times against the frozen gravel. He did say to the beast, “O spirit of the hard throat, teach the weak two-legs how to hold the mountain within their ribs, so that the frost does not shatter our bones like dry sticks.”
The great horn-bull did look upon Teng-Nu with eyes of pale malachite. It did not speak with the tongue of men, but it did bend its great neck and did strike its jaw against a rock of sharp granite. A piece of its lower bone did break away—the hard mandible that held three great, flat molars of yellow enamel. The beast did kick three clear river-pebbles with its cloven hoof so they fell into Teng-Nu’s lap, and then it did leap into the white mist of the cloud-chasm and was seen no more by mortal eyes.
Teng-Nu took the white jawbone down to the cave of his clan. The bone was cold like a frozen fish, but it was heavy like iron ore. He took the thick wool of the high-climbing ewes and the cured sinews of their flank-meat, and he did braid a heavy cord, dying it in the brown ochre mud of the hot springs. He took three thongs of dried hide and did tie the three clear pebbles beneath the chin of the bone. With a sharp tooth of iron, he did carve upon the jaw the winding paths of the mountain tracks, filling the marks with green copper dust and sticky pine sap.
Now in that camp there was a great hunter whose name was Krog-Vash, which does signify “Boar Who Breaks Spears.” Krog-Vash was a man of very wide shoulders, and he did wear three bear-skins upon his back, but his mind was short like a goat’s tail. He did despise the prayers of Teng-Nu, and he did boast to the young men around the dung-fire, saying, “A man endures the cold because his blood is thick and his meat is plentiful! The old holy man sits in the dirt with a piece of dead bone like a sick dog gnawing a knuckle. I shall walk over the high pass of Gaialilith with my heavy club, and the sulfur-wind will run away from my shouting!”
Krog-Vash did gather six strong boys of his clan, and they did take their heavy hides and their dried meat, marching up the steep slope toward the burning crater pass. But when they reached the throat of the mountain, where the rock is red and hot beneath the ice, the great demon of the crater did wake up. A dark cloud of yellow sulfur, thick like greasy wool, did tumble down the cliffs, accompanied by a freezing tempest that did freeze the spit inside their mouths before it hit the shale. The young boys did fall upon their knees, tearing at their necks with bloody fingers because their breath was turned to water and fire in their chests.
Krog-Vash did swing his great stone club at the smoke, roaring with his throat, but the sulfur did enter his open mouth. His eyes did swell shut like rotten plums, his knees did turn to soft marrow, and he fell face-first into the freezing ash, unable to stand against the screaming mountain-gale.
Then did come Teng-Nu, walking slowly through the tempest upon his old feet. He wore no three bear-skins; he wore only a ragged blanket of rough fleece, and upon his breast did hang the white jawbone with its three teeth and its dangling stones. As the yellow smoke did roll over him, Teng-Nu did reach his withered fingers to the necklace. He snapped the first quartz pebble from its leather cord, put it between the heavy yellow molars of the goat jawbone, and bit down with his hand upon the bone.
From the necklace there leaped a sound like two granite slabs grinding together in the deep earth. A pale green vapor of malachite light did rush out from the carved bone, wrapping around Teng-Nu’s throat like an iron collar. The old shaman walked into the thickest part of the yellow fog. He did not choke, he did not weep, and his skin did not turn black from the blistering sulfur. The freezing storm-wind struck his bare breast, but it glided away from him like spring rain running off the back of a fat seal.
Teng-Nu came to the place where Krog-Vash lay groaning in the dirt, vomiting the black bile of the crater. The holy man looked down upon the boastful hunter, and he did not strike him with a club, nor did he speak words of insult. Instead, Teng-Nu drew into his lungs the foul, yellow cloud of sulfur and ash until his chest was round like a drum. He opened his throat toward the wall of smoke and loosed a terrible, concussive bellow—a great mountain cough that echoed like a cliff falling into a deep valley.
The force of that spiritual roar struck the tempest. The blinding fog of sulfur was blown apart in a five-pace circle, the freezing wind was turned aside, and the hot embers that were creeping toward the fallen hunter’s boots were scattered into cold sand.
Teng-Nu seized Krog-Vash by the hair of his head and dragged him down the pass through the green circle of calm, hauling the great hunter through the blizzard as if he were nothing more than a dead hare. When they reached the lower tents of the clan, Krog-Vash’s skin was blue like river clay, and his big chest was rattling with the gravel-breath of the mountain.
For many suns, Krog-Vash lay by the hearth, coughing black dust and shaking in his joints. When at last he could stand upon his feet, he took his heavy stone club and threw it into the deep chasm where the glacier eats the rocks. He took a bundle of wool and sat down at the feet of Teng-Nu, asking with humble eyes to be shown how to weave the sinew cord and how to polish the river-pebbles. Never again did he boast of his great meat or the thickness of his bear-skins, for he had seen that the mountain does not care for the loudness of a man’s shouting.
The first jawbone of the white horn-beast was worn by Teng-Nu until his turnings were finished, and when he died upon the bald ridge, his people did bury him beneath a cairn of heavy quartz. But the pattern of the jaw was carved into the minds of the mountain shamans, who make the implement of bone, malachite, and river-stone across all the turns of the great year, so that the people of the high crags may walk through fire and frost without being broken by the world.
Moral of the Story: He who meets the wrath of the mountain with boastful pride is like a dry reed that snaps before the avalanche, but he who learns to chew the hard stones of endurance with a quiet spirit will stand unmoved while the storm breaks its teeth upon his skin.

- Metabolic Savor (Passive): You can ingest bitter, foul, or foul-smelling survival items without physical revulsion or nausea, maintaining composure in rancid environments.
- Pebble-Eater’s Mastication (Active): Mark 1 Stress to crush one of the three attuned stone charms between the jaw’s teeth. Choose one active environmental threat (biting frost, scorching heat, toxic air, or driving grit). You gain Potency when resisting effects related to that specific threat for the duration of the current score or travel segment. The charms replenish at downtime.
- Spiritual Regurgitation (Active): Make an Attune roll to unleash a concussive spiritual roar targeting an obstacle within close range. On a success, you blow away a localized cloud of smoke/gas, snuff out an open flame, or displace loose terrain to knock a pursuer off balance (improving your team’s position from Desperate to Risky, or Risky to Controlled).
- Complications: A Devil’s Bargain or a 1–3 result on an Attune roll with this item may cause the jaw’s grinding echo to reverberate across the ghost field, drawing hostile specters or causing the wearer’s limbs to briefly turn heavy and stiff as stone.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)
Item: Pebble-Eater’s Jaw Wondrous Item, common (requires attunement)
Properties:
- The jawbone necklace weighs 2 pounds and occupies the neck slot while worn.
- Sure-Footed Enduring (Passive): You have advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws made against effects that would knock you prone or push you against your will. Additionally, you have advantage on Constitution saving throws against exhaustion caused by forced marches, extreme cold, extreme heat, or high altitude.
- Metabolic Savor (Passive): You can safely swallow foul-tasting, bitter, or rank organic substances without gagging or vomiting. This does not grant resistance or immunity to poison damage or the poisoned condition.
- Pebble-Eater’s Mastication (Action): You snap one of the necklace’s three dangling quartz pebbles and place it between the jaw’s molars, crushing it spiritually. For 1 hour, you gain immunity to the natural environmental effects of extreme cold, extreme heat, high altitude, or non-magical suffocating smoke and ash. The necklace has 3 pebbles and regains all expended pebbles daily at dawn.
- Spiritual Regurgitation (Action): You unleash a concussive spiritual bellow directed at a point within 15 feet. Non-magical flames in a 5-foot cube (such as torches, lanterns, or campfires) are snuffed out, and non-magical fog, smoke, or vapor in a 5-foot cube is dispersed. Alternatively, you can target one Small or Medium creature within 15 feet; the target must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 feet away from you and knocked prone if standing on loose earth, scree, or mud.
Knave (Second Edition)
Item: Pebble-Eater’s Talisman
Item Slots:
- 1 Item Slot (Worn around the neck).
Durability:
- 3 Quality / Durability (Can absorb 3 points of item damage before breaking; repairs require bonecarving and replacement mountain goat sinew).
System Adaptations:
- Sure-Footed Enduring (Passive): The wearer adds +2 to any saving throw made using Constitution or Strength to resist forced movement, slipping on loose rock, or suffering exhaustion from harsh weather travel.
- Metabolic Savor (Passive): The bearer can consume spoiled rations or rank water without suffering sickness or morale penalties (though actual lethal poisons still require standard checks).
- Pebble-Eater’s Mastication (Active): Once per exploration turn, the wielder can crush one of the three hanging quartz pebbles between the jawbone’s teeth. For the next hour, the character completely ignores all damage and hazard penalties caused by non-magical freezing temperatures, extreme heat, sandstorms, or choking smoke. The three pebbles restore their magic after a night of rest.
- Spiritual Regurgitation (Active): In an encounter or exploration turn, the wearer can expend an action to loose a concussive spiritual cough. This immediately extinguishes all open non-magical torches and candles within 15 feet, disperses a 5-foot cloud of gas/smoke, or forces one adjacent human-sized adversary to make a Strength saving throw. On a failure, the foe loses their footing and falls prone. If the save succeeds, the talisman absorbs the physical vibration, losing 1 point of Durability.
Fate (Fate Condensed / Core)
Item: Mandible of the Enduring Pebble-Eater
Aspects:
- Function Aspect: Shamanic Goat-Jaw Talisman of Elemental Hardiness
- Flaw Aspect: Unyielding Stone-Like Stubbornness

- Sure-Footed Enduring: Because you wear this grounded highland relic, you gain a +2 bonus when you Overcome or Defend using Physique or Athletics to resist forced movement, resist being knocked off balance, or endure severe physical exhaustion caused by brutal terrain and forced marches.
- Pebble-Eater’s Mastication: Once per session (or by spending a Fate Point), you may crush an attuned stone charm between the jaw’s molars to ignore all environmental stress or zone-wide situational aspects tied to natural extremes (such as Freezing Blizzards, Sulfur Smog, or Scorching Dunes) for the duration of the current scene.
- Spiritual Regurgitation: You can use Physique or Provoke to make an Overcome action or Create an Advantage by releasing a concussive spiritual roar. You can blow out open non-magical fires, clear an obscuring zone aspect like Heavy Smoke or Thick Mist, or knock an opponent off balance, creating a temporary boost or aspect such as Disrupted Footing with one free invoke.
Numenera & Cypher System
Item: Mandible of Metabolic Resilience
Level: 2 Form: A bio-organic goat jawbone bound in dense sinew cordage, sporting three rear teeth and three dangling crystalline quartz nodes with etched emerald conduits. Kind: Artifact Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (check when activating Pebble-Eater’s Mastication or Spiritual Regurgitation)
Effect:

For 1 hour, the user gains complete immunity to non-magical, environmental damage and penalties from one specific hazard: sub-zero cold, blistering desert heat, suffocating smog/volcanic ash, or blinding sandstorms. Expended pebbles magically reform at dawn (maximum 3 pebbles active at once).
