Seiðr 482 of the Mist Vapor Spindle

Lore

  • During the early expansions of the textile guilds across the island nation of Banpo, launders and vestment keepers struggled with the rapid degradation of delicate ceremonial fabrics. Ordinary laundering with elemental water frequently destroyed fragile rune-threaded garments, silver-stitched sashes, and enchanted robes. An eccentric artisan attuned to trans-dimensional trance traditions devised a method to bridge classical thread-spinning divination with localized spiritual extraction. By entering a shallow seiðr meditation, the user could perceive the invisible clinging grime, oils, soot, and spiritual residue adhering to fabrics as hostile foreign threads. The Spindle was fashioned to coax these impurities into the spiritual weave and disintegrate them through micro-elemental steam currents without saturating the cloth with physical water. Over generations, duplicates of this utility focus spread throughout municipal washeries, elite tailor shops, and noble wardrobes, serving as an indispensable apparatus for non-immersion textile restoration.

Description

  • The instrument is a hand-carved, seven-inch distaff spindle crafted from dense, polished ashwood, topped with a counterweight whorl made of porous volcanic pumice. Inlaid silver wires trace cyclical spiraling runes along the shaft, terminating in a brass-capped eyelet that glows with a faint ultraviolet luminescence when viewed through True Sight. At its center resides a small, coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal that anchors its arcane charge. When held and focused upon, the spindle emits a faint, rhythmic humming sound accompanied by a delicate, dry vapor that smells of crisp cedar, dried lavender, and ozone. Passing the spindle over fabrics causes dust, bloodstains, grease, and dried marsh fluids to lift freely from fibers, drawn toward the pumice whorl where they dissipate into harmless specks of inert gray ash.

Passive Magic

  • Thread-Sight Trance: While holding the spindle, the avatar passively perceives the structural integrity and cleanliness of any non-living fibrous material within 5 feet. Spots of deep-set biological fluids, acid burns, fungal decay, and latent magical taints highlight with distinct subtle hues in the user’s peripheral vision, granting a clearer understanding of physical garment decay.
  • Fiber Shielding Aura: When the spindle is drawn and held in hand, garments, cloaks, and sashes worn by the avatar resist mundane environmental soiling. Road dust, light rain, soot, and ash slide away from equipped textiles without leaving stains, preserving the outer presentation of attire in harsh environments.
  • Static Dissipation: Worn vestments remain completely neutral to elemental static, preventing cling, dust accumulation, and minor spark burns caused by friction during intense physical movement.

Activable Magic

  • Vaporous Cleansing Draw: The avatar speaks a short command phrase and concentrates for one full action, sweeping the spindle across an attire set or textile covering. The spindle generates an envelope of heated, dry elemental steam that extracts mud, blood, sweat, grease, and fluid stains from the cloth without wetting or warping the material. A complete suit of clothes or armor cloth-underlayer is restored to pristine condition within 6 seconds.
  • Wrinkle-Smoothing Loom-Weave: By expending one full action and chanting a two-word harmonic incantation, the user directs warm planar energy across a target garment within arm’s reach. Distorted cloth fibers align to their original weave pattern, instantly pressing out creases, stiffening ceremonial collars, and restoring the crisp fold lines of sashes and cloaks as if freshly ironed.
  • Odor Banishment Whisper: The avatar concentrates for two minutes in a quiet seiðr trance while pointing the spindle at up to three sets of garments, bedding, or personal storage pouches. All embedded biological odors, decay scents, smoke aromas, and mustiness are bound into the whorl and vaporized, leaving the items smelling neutral and fresh.
  • Pressed Starch Ward: The user concentrates for one minute to weave a rigidifying vapor barrier across an ordinary set of clothing. For the next 4 hours of travel, the treated fabric resists wrinkling, tearing against light briars, and clinging when exposed to dense humidity or swamp mists.

Commercial Outlets, Trade Venues, and Pricing for the Mist-Vapor Spindle

  • Tailor and Haberdasher Ateliers:
    • These small, family-owned shops are located in upper-district municipal markets and residential quarters of large island cities like Banpo, Aterian, and Teotihuacán.
    • The proprietors are specialized textile artisans who wear crafting gear focused on weaving, stitching, and rune embroidery. They utilize the spindle in their back rooms to prep high-end garments, remove handling stains from fine sashes, and refresh silk or wool items without risking water warp.
    • Buying Here: An avatar seeking to purchase a newly carved or refurbished unit will find it displayed alongside shears, chalk markers, and enchanted measuring cords. Because the item is directly useful to the shop’s trade, the tailor will demand a premium. The baseline price typically hovers around 12 to 15 silver coins. If the buyer belongs to the local Clothiers’ Guild or Weavers’ Faction, the 10% discount per character tier applies, reducing the cost to 9 to 11 silver for a Tier 1 buyer.
    • Selling Here: If an avatar brings a salvaged spindle to sell, the tailor will closely inspect the volcanic pumice whorl and the integrity of the silver inlay with their Mind’s Eye. Standard merchant haggling will reduce the offer by 10% per seller tier from its appraised value, typically yielding an acquisition payout between 8 and 9 silver coins deposited into the character’s World Bank account.
  • Municipal Washhouses and Public Laundries:
    • These establishments operate in mid-tier city districts, dense guild wards, and busy port areas where adventuring crews and laborers come to maintain their gear.
    • Operated by cooperative laundry workers or private families, these shops feature large magical steam vats, drying racks, and press tables. Several apprentices frequently share worn spindles to process heavy cloaks, ceremonial vestments, and delicate linings brought in by travelers.
    • Buying Here: Used spindles are occasionally sold when a facility upgrades its gear or downsizes staff. These tools show wear on the ashwood shaft and minor scratches on the brass eyelet, but the embedded Tier 1 crystal remains functional. A customer can purchase a well-used spindle directly for around 8 to 10 silver coins, or equivalent in non-metal municipal tokens like clay or shell scrip recognized within that city.
    • Selling Here: A washhouse master is always open to acquiring spare cleansing foci to handle high-volume work orders. They will offer between 7 and 9 silver coins, depending on the current backlog of laundry and the remaining charge of the internal crystal.
  • General Outfitting Posts and Caravansaries:
    • Found along the main military roadways connecting coastal ports to central island capitals, as well as near covered wagon staging yards and airship mooring docks.
    • These shops cater directly to transient adventurers, merchants, and couriers who need compact utility tools to keep their attire presentable during long expeditions between island states.
    • Buying Here: Outfitting posts stock spindles as field-maintenance essentials alongside bedrolls, water skins, and whetstones. The cost is subject to remote availability and shipping tariffs across state borders; in transit hubs or outer waystations, the seller’s market drives the price up to 14 to 18 silver coins. If paid in physical coinage, the merchant will demand precious metal coins (such as 1 gold and 4 silver, or 7 electrum) to avoid local non-metal conversion fees.
    • Selling Here: Outpost keepers purchase them readily because traveling adventurers frequently misplace or break their utility tools. The standard purchase price offered to an avatar is approximately 8 silver coins, logged formally in the post’s ledger for tax inspectors.
  • Underground Black Markets and Dockside Fences:
    • Tucked into dark alleys behind coastal wharfs, subterranean tavern basements, or secluded anchorages outside the purview of the royal guard.
    • These brokers deal in unvetted goods, looted gear from fallen adventuring parties, and items taken from contested battlegrounds or shipwreck salvage.
    • Buying Here: A buyer will never find a discount in the black market. Due to the unregulated nature of the transaction and the absence of tax assessment, the broker will charge 20 silver coins (or 2 gold coins) or more for a clean spindle, demanding payment strictly in physical gold or silver coin rather than World Bank transfers.
    • Selling Here: If an avatar needs to unload a spindle quickly without questions asked or records entered into municipal ledgers, a black-market fence will accept the piece. They typically pay between 8 and 10 silver in physical coin; however, if the fence has an immediate buyer seeking untraceable personal maintenance gear, they may pay up to 16 to 20 silver coins to acquire it on the spot.
  • Pawnshops and Curiosity Dealers:
    • Situated along the secondary streets of large walled towns and city centers, often close to municipal gates or guildhalls.
    • These cluttered shops buy, pawn, and resell non-attuned items, estate clearances, and second-hand adventurer kits. Spindles are often found grouped together in glass display cases alongside old wands, trinkets, and badges.
    • Buying Here: The asking price varies drastically based on how recently the shopkeeper evaluated the stock. A customer can generally negotiate a purchase price between 9 and 13 silver coins.
    • Selling Here: The pawnbroker will drive a hard bargain, citing the need to hold inventory and pay monthly property taxes to the City, State, and Country. A selling avatar can expect an opening bid of around 6 to 8 silver coins, deposited directly to their bank account once terms are struck.

Operational Combat and Roleplay Applications of the Mist-Vapor Spindle

  • Dense Swamplands and Toxic Mires:
    • Environmental Context: Travel through stagnant bayous, peat bogs, and coastal mangrove estuaries saturates textiles with corrosive slime, rot spores, and clingy marsh parasites.
    • Defensive Roleplay: When a marsh-dwelling predator spews acidic venom or necrotic marsh sludge onto an ally, the avatar spends an action to deploy the Vaporous Cleansing Draw. Rather than allowing the caustic bile to eat through outer vestments or underlying leather padding, the spindle’s localized steam vortex lifts the toxic fluids off the material within six seconds, neutralizing the contaminant before it burns deeper toward the avatar’s hit points. In areas where parasitic swamp leeches or burrowing mite swarms latch onto clothing folds, the avatar triggers the Pressed Starch Ward, instantly stiffening the textile weave so vermin cannot penetrate or find purchase between fabric seams.
    • Offensive Roleplay: The avatar targets an encroaching bog beast or mire creature that relies on foul-smelling swamp musk or a specialized scent trail to track the party. By focusing the Odor Banishment Whisper during a skirmish, the avatar strips away the creature’s scent marks left on terrain markers, vegetation, or party gear, disorienting the beast’s natural tracking instincts. In close-quarters grappling within water, the avatar thrusts the brass eyelet of the spindle directly toward an adversary’s visual appendages and unleashes the Vaporous Cleansing Draw; the sudden outward eruption of scalding, superheated dry vapor creates a blinding plume of steam directly in the target’s face, forcing them to break their grip or giving the avatar space to disengage.
  • Volcanic Ash Plains and Geothermal Craters:
    • Environmental Context: Regions adjacent to active island calderas and magma vents are coated in choking sulfur dust, hot cinder clouds, and abrasive pumice flakes that degrade equipment and scorch cloth.
    • Defensive Roleplay: As fiery embers and burning soot shower down from an eruption column, the avatar holds the spindle upright to maintain the Fiber Shielding Aura. The ambient ash slides harmlessly off cloaks, mantles, and sash loops, preventing the embers from igniting the character’s mundane garments or burning through external storage pouch straps. When an enemy fire elemental or magma-flinging brute unleashes an explosive blast of smoke, the avatar activates the Wrinkle-Smoothing Loom-Weave across their face wrap, instantly tightening the fiber porosity to create a makeshift particulate filter against inhalation hazards.
    • Offensive Roleplay: The volcanic landscape is littered with loose particulate and dry soot banks. Using an action to sweep the spindle across the ground, the avatar activates the Vaporous Cleansing Draw in reverse focus, vacuuming up a massive charge of hot, abrasive cinder dust into the pumice whorl and instantly expelling it outward in a directed dry-steam burst toward an attacking squad. The resulting cloud of superheated dust stings eyes, interferes with enemy spell chanting by filling opposing mouths with dry grit, and forces hostile archers to misjudge firing angles through the opaque smoke pocket.
  • Underground Cave Systems and Megacity Warrens:
    • Environmental Context: Subterranean corridors, forgotten dwarven delves, and dark under-city ruins are filled with stale air, fungal colonies, bioluminescent spores, and predatory ambushers that hunt in total darkness.
    • Defensive Roleplay: When giant cave spiders or subterranean arachnids launch sticky, adhesive webbing to entangle the party, the avatar activates the Vaporous Cleansing Draw. The targeted blast of dry, heated vapor rapidly disintegrates the organic moisture binding the spider silk, causing the web strands to turn brittle and crumble into gray powder, freeing trapped limbs without requiring the use of an open torch flame that could ignite underground gas pockets. When stalked by beasts sensitive to pheromones, the avatar routinely maintains the Odor Banishment Whisper across the party’s bedrolls and backpacks, ensuring predatory track-hunters cannot follow the party’s descent through subterranean tunnels.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In narrow tunnel choke-points, the avatar exploits the Thread-Sight Trance. By scanning approaching subterranean humanoids or goblin patrols, the avatar immediately discerns rotten leather straps, frayed bowstrings, weakened armor lacings, or acid-damaged weapon sheaths. Calling out these structural flaws allows allies to target specific brittle buckles or frayed joints. In direct physical melee, the avatar uses the spindle as an improvised striking focus: driving the heavy pumice whorl into a foe’s jaw while vocalizing a somatic flourish, discharging a burst of localized dry steam directly into the foe’s ears or throat to disrupt their concentration on active spells.
  • High-Altitude Cloud Cities, Zeppelins, and Airships:
    • Environmental Context: Elevated settlements, balloon gondolas, and sky-skiffs endure howling wind currents, frozen drizzle, heavy cloud moisture, and constant static electricity built up across rigging lines.
    • Defensive Roleplay: As an airship passes through thunderclouds, high static friction poses an immediate risk of shocking deck hands or igniting gas envelopes. The spindle’s passive Static Dissipation neutralizes charge build-up along the avatar’s body, preventing arcing lightning from grounding into metallic belt fittings or sash trinkets. If an aerial raider attempts to foul the vessel’s control cables or the avatar’s glider wings with wet tar or sticky entanglement ropes, the avatar channels the Vaporous Cleansing Draw to flash-dry the adhesive, causing the binding agent to lose its tackiness and blow away harmlessly in the altitude slipstream.
    • Offensive Roleplay: During boarding actions high above the earth, combatants rely heavily on wind-resistant capes, parachutes, glide-sashes, and rigging tethers. The avatar targets an enemy boarder’s descending glider wings or grappling rope using the spindle’s focused Wrinkle-Smoothing Loom-Weave in an unnatural vector. By forcefully over-stretching and shifting the fiber weave of the enemy’s canvas wings or parachute canopy mid-flight, the airflow dynamics through the cloth are radically distorted, inducing sudden aerodynamic drag, destabilizing the foe’s airborne trajectory, and sending them tumbling off balance across the open sky.
  • High-Society Palaces, Royal Courts, and Grand Guildhalls:
    • Environmental Context: Urban seats of power, diplomatic reception halls, and grand monarchical residences demand absolute adherence to formal etiquette, where social leverage, cleanliness, and visual presentation determine political influence.
    • Defensive Roleplay: In courtly arenas where rival houses employ discreet saboteurs to humiliate opponents through spilled wine, stinging powders, or magical staining dyes, the avatar relies on the Fiber Shielding Aura. When an intentional “accident” occurs, dyed liquids simply bead up and roll onto the marble floor without leaving a single mark on the character’s ceremonial robes. If a rival courtier subtly applies an invisible contact poison or trackable alchemical dust to the avatar’s hand or clothing, the Thread-Sight Trance immediately reveals the foreign magical residue as a clashing hue, allowing the user to clean it with a quiet, imperceptible gesture of the Vaporous Cleansing Draw before the poison absorbs into the skin.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Within the rigid decorum of a royal audience before a King or Queen, social standing is a weapon. The avatar identifies a haughty noble rival preparing to deliver an address. Utilizing a subtle, unheard invocation of the Odor Banishment Whisper inverted, or directing the Vaporous Cleansing Draw across the room at the rival’s elaborate powdered wig, velvet doublets, or scented garments, the avatar strips away all masking perfumes and natural fabric oils. The rival’s wig instantly goes flat, brittle, and unpowdered, while their hidden underlying sweat stains and unpleasant bodily odors become starkly pronounced in the middle of court proceedings, shattering their composure, provoking disgust from nearby royalty, and completely ruining their diplomatic leverage.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight: The engraved silver runes along the dark ashwood shaft ignite with a soft, steady violet luminescence, rippling outward from the small coin-sized crystal embedded in the core. Thin, spiraling ribbons of pale, dry vapor curl up from the brass eyelet and eddy around the porous volcanic pumice whorl, creating a translucent, heat-shimmering halo around the user’s hand. As the seiðr trance deepens, the microscopic fibers of target garments appear distinctly highlighted, with dirt, dried blood, and oil specks glowing with an oily, dull yellow luminescence against the weave before they lift away into the air.
  • Hearing: A low, melodic vibration hums through the user’s grip, sounding like the rapid spinning of a heavy wooden drop spindle combined with the distant, muffled hiss of pressurized steam escaping a brass valve. The air directly around the tool produces a faint, rhythmic clicking sound, reminiscent of dry loom shuttles sliding across warp threads.
  • Smell: A sudden, clean bloom of sharp cedarwood, crushed dried lavender, and crisp ozone fills the user’s sinuses, completely masking any surrounding foul stenches. Beneath this floral-woody layer is the faint, dry scent of hot stone, like desert bedrock immediately after an intense heat flash.
  • Taste: A dry, mildly alkaline sensation coats the tongue and the back of the palate, carrying the faint, powdery mineral taste of fine volcanic pumice dust and chalk, accompanied by a light, clean crispness like drinking melted frost water.
  • Touch: The ashwood shaft vibrates with a rapid, tingling pulse against the user’s palm, feeling comfortably warm without ever growing hot enough to burn. The surrounding air shifts into a localized pocket of arid, static-charged warmth that dries sweat on the skin instantly while leaving the user’s fingers feeling light, silky, and powder-dry.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mind’s Eye Data Influx: The user’s consciousness experiences a clean, geometric data display tracing the remaining structural integrity, fiber thread density, and exact chemical nature of contaminants residing within any cloth within five feet.
    • Temporal Web Awareness: The user senses a fleeting, six-second psychic tug backward through time, briefly glimpsing an ethereal visual ghost of how the fabric looked and was woven at the exact moment of its original manufacture.
    • Arcane Flow Resonance: The avatar feels an unhurried, steady draw of ambient magical currents circulating from the surrounding atmospheric weave, into the spindle’s core crystal, and down into the avatar’s attuned energy channel like a gentle, rhythmic heartbeat.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight: Observers witness the spindle flare with a soft, pulsing purple light that casts undulating shadows across the user’s chest and garments. A compact, spiraling vortex of white, misty vapor forms in a three-foot spherical field around the user’s hand, enveloping target clothing without condensing into water droplets, while flecks of soot and mud visibly lift from fabrics and disintegrate into fine gray sparks that vanish mid-air.
  • Hearing: Bystanders hear a soothing, resonant wooden drone that sounds like a spinning wheel turning in an empty hall, underscored by a quiet, rhythmic whistling of hot vapor rushing through a tiny aperture. The noise is soft and does not echo past ten feet.
  • Smell: Those standing nearby suddenly catch an invigorating wave of clean linen, mountain air, and faint, aromatic cedar resin, cutting sharply through the mundane odors of mud, road travel, camp grease, or stable straw.
  • Taste: If standing within arm’s reach of the vortex, observers notice a brief, crisp dryness at the front of their mouths, like the dry static air preceding an inland lightning strike.
  • Touch: Anyone within a few feet feels a localized, pleasant gust of warm, arid air sweep past, briefly making the hairs on their arms stand up due to the sudden dissipation of static charge.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Spiritual Pressure Shift: Other magic users in the immediate vicinity detect a faint ripple in the local weave, perceiving a brief, orderly calming of ambient planar chaos as discordant spiritual dirt is forcibly unraveled.
    • True Sight Ultraviolet Signature: Creatures or casters utilizing True Sight perceive a distinct ultraviolet aura radiating from the spindle’s brass eyelet, forming ethereal geometric thread patterns that loop around the target textile like spectral crochet stitches.

Positives

  • Total Textile Restoration: Removes deep biological fluids, mundane mud, greasy oils, and toxic residues completely without relying on water immersion, preventing the shrinking, warping, rotting, or tearing of delicate fabrics.
  • Neutral Scent Eradication: Strips away embedded odors, hunting pheromones, and decay scents, preventing wild beasts and subterranean predators from tracking the party by smell.
  • Presentation and Morale: Restores formal attire, cloaks, and sashes to immaculate, freshly pressed conditions in seconds, granting immediate social and diplomatic utility when entering towns, guildhalls, and royal courts.
  • Passive Protection: Neutralizes environmental static electricity and repels road dust and minor splashes automatically while held, keeping crucial gear, tool loops, and sash slots unsoiled during harsh travel.

Negatives

  • Action and Focus Tax: Activating its specific cleansing actions consumes primary combat actions during a turn, leaving the user with fewer actions to execute strikes or prepare defensive reactions.
  • Visual and Auditory Exposure: The bright purple illumination of the crystal and the audible hum of the vortex can compromise visual stealth in darkened caves, night skirmishes, or covert scouting maneuvers.
  • Dehydration Hazard on Organic Fleshes: Prolonged or accidental exposure of bare skin to the direct vapor stream rapidly saps moisture, leaving raw, cracked, and dry patches of skin that can cause irritation.
  • Operational Fragility: Each completion of an activated magic triggers a 1d20 lifespan roll, carrying a permanent 5% risk on a roll of 1 that the internal Tier 1 crystal shatters into useless shards, instantly disabling all magical functions until replaced.

Crafting Recipe: Spindle of the Vapor-Weft

Materials Needed

  • 1 billet of seasoned dense ashwood (at least 8 inches in length and 1.5 inches in diameter, free of knots and dry rot)
  • 1 intact Tier 1 magic crystal (coin-sized and coin-weight, functioning as the central arcane battery and catalyst)
  • 1 disk of porous volcanic pumice (approximately 2.5 inches in diameter, centered with an axle bore, serving as the counterweight whorl)
  • 3 feet of drawn fine silver wire (purity grade suitable for inlaying arcane conduit channels)
  • 1 cast brass eyelet cap (machined or hammered to fit the spindle tip with an aperture loop for vapor channeling)
  • 4 drams of refined cedar resin varnish (used for sealing wood grain and anchoring the runic inlay)
  • 2 fluid ounces of distilled volcanic spring water or concentrated elemental steam distillate (drawn via a fluid collector)
  • 1 sacrifical magical consumable: 1 mundane cleansing draught or minor prestidigitation salve (consumed during the process to transfer its latent stain-removal and textile-smoothing magic into the core)

Tools Required

  • 1 set of woodworking chisels and miniature gouges (for shaping shaft tapers and carving deep rune channels)
  • 1 foot-treadle lathe or hand-crank spindle lathe (for turning balanced tapers along the ashwood shaft)
  • 1 jeweler’s wire burnisher and chasing hammer (for seating and flush-setting silver wire conduits)
  • 1 fine abrasive file and core reamer (for boring the central crystal chamber and seating the pumice whorl)
  • 1 Fluid Collector (used to precisely extract, measure, and inject the distilled elemental liquids)
  • 1 small ceramic crucible and alcohol spirit burner (for heating resin binders and annealing brass fittings)

Skill Requirements

  • Woodworking / Woodcarving: Level 3 or higher (ensures symmetrical shaft turning, balanced weight distribution, and precise runic channeling)
  • Arcane Crafting / Runework: Level 2 or higher (necessary to scribe Seiðr binding channels and align the silver wire to draw ambient weave currents)
  • Alchemy / Reagent Handling: Level 1 or higher (required to properly dissolve and transfer the magical properties of the sacrificial cleansing consumable without corrupting the crystal catalyst)

Crafting Steps

  • Shaping the Spindle Shaft: Mount the ashwood billet onto the lathe. Turn and shave the stock down until it forms a balanced, seven-inch drop spindle shaft tapering from a half-inch midpoint toward a slender upper tip and a slotted lower peg. Use fine abrasives to polish the exterior surface until entirely smooth.
  • Boring the Core Cavity: Remove the shaft from the lathe and place it into a padded clamp. Using a fine reamer, bore a coin-sized seating cavity directly through the thickened center of the shaft. Ensure the inner diameter accommodates the Tier 1 magic crystal snugly without fracturing the structural ashwood walls.
  • Inscribing the Seiðr Conduits: Trace cyclical Seiðr spiraling runes from the central crystal seat up toward the tip and down toward the whorl peg. Using miniature gouges, cut clean channels exactly matching the gauge of the silver wire. Ensure rune paths interconnect seamlessly to permit continuous planar current circulation.
  • Inlaying the Conductive Wire: Anneal the three feet of fine silver wire over the alcohol burner until pliable. Press and tap the silver wire into the carved rune channels using the jeweler’s burnisher and chasing hammer. Sand the wire flush with the wooden surface, ensuring no sharp points protrude that could snag delicate cloth fibers.
  • Fitting the Brass Eyelet: Heat the cast brass eyelet cap slightly to expand the metal, coat the spindle tip with a thin drop of cedar resin, and seat the brass cap securely over the upper terminus. Ensure the runic silver wire lines make direct physical contact with the brass base to establish the exit conduit for the dry-cleaning vapor.
  • Preparing and Seating the Pumice Whorl: Smooth the outer perimeter of the porous volcanic pumice disk. Ream the central bore until it forms a tight friction fit onto the lower peg of the ashwood shaft. Coat the lower silver contact pins with cedar resin and press the pumice whorl firmly into place, verifying that the entire spindle remains dynamically balanced when spun.
  • Infusing the Sacrificial Reagent: In the ceramic crucible, gently warm the sacrificial cleansing draught along with the two ounces of distilled elemental steam condensate. Draw the blend into the Fluid Collector. Slowly inject the heated fluid directly into the porous inner walls of the central crystal cavity, allowing the wood fibers to absorb the latent alchemical cleansing properties.
  • Mounting the Crystal Catalyst: Place the Tier 1 magic crystal into the prepared central chamber. Secure the crystal in place by sealing the perimeter seams with refined cedar resin varnish. The resin locks the stone into physical contact with the exposed silver inlay wires, completing the internal circuit.
  • Chanting the Seiðr Activation Ritual: Enter a quiet, focused Seiðr trance state lasting at least ten uninterrupted minutes. Direct mental thought through the ashwood shaft into the crystal, chanting the harmonic invocation of the vapor-weft. Visualize the transfer of the sacrificial draught’s dissolved magical essence directly into the crystalline matrix. The ritual concludes as the silver runes illuminate with a soft violet light and a thin wisp of dry, cedar-scented vapor vents from the brass tip, signaling successful binding and baseline operational readiness.

Smoke-Stick and Great Soiled Mantle of High Singer

Now it comes to pass in the season when the big air-giant VaporSphere did hang heavy in the sky like an unripe melon, that the land of Banpo was not yet dry from the great swamp-making. In that ancient counting of seasons, when the great earth-woman Gaialilith had only just finished making the things with claws and the things with hooves by mixing them up with her hands, there walked a woman named Hrefna of the Grey Loom. She was not a queen, neither was she an admiral of big war-boats, but she possessed within her skull the second-eye seeing, which the foolish people of the mud-paths did call the Seiðr trance.

Hrefna did dwell inside a small hovel made of baked clay and dried river-reeds, where the moisture from the warm sea did rot the corner posts every forty weeks. All about her hut were sheep that had horns like snails and beasts of the field that dropped greasy yellow tallow upon the stones. Hrefna did sit from the hour when Helios climbed up above the sea-brim at five of the clock until Helios did drop down into the salt at seventeen of the day, spinning the coarse hair of mountain-dogs and the flax of wild blue weeds into coverings for the bodies of people.

In those forgotten turnings of the moon, the people were very dirty. They did not know the craft of the kettle-wash without spoiling the weave, for whensoever they dipped their woven skins into the boiling springs of the earth, the garments shrank until only a small ape or a newborn child could pull them over their ears. Moreover, the red mud of the volcanic chimneys did stick to their garments like dried pitch, and if an arrow-man did slay an elk of the forest, the dark blood-juice soaked deep into the tunic, turning stiff as dried tree-bark and smelling like a dead hound in the noon-heat.

There ruled in that corner of the island a mighty chieftain-singer whose name in the old scratches was Vagn of the Silver Throat. Vagn was a man who possessed nine fine mantles, all woven from the pale fleece of the sky-rams that roost upon the tall crags where the air is thin. These mantles were not ordinary cloths, for into their hems the rune-carvers of the old mountain had sewn tiny strings of white silver and small beads of thunder-glass, so that when Vagn did stand before the great fire of the feast-house to chant the lineage of his mother’s grandfathers, the cloaks did shine like the white belly of a leaping fish.

Now, on a certain Evoday during the week of Dimming, when the dark shadow of the great gas-world fell upon Saṃsāra and made the air grow cold and sour, a great banquet was proclaimed in the hall of Vagn. To this hall came the heavy-handed men who fought the big scaled lizards of the surf, and the fat barter-men who brought dried fish and stone axes from four days’ journey across the hills. They did roast three whole oxen upon pits of spitting charcoal, and they did drink the sour berry-mash until their eyes turned red like boiled crabs.

Vagn of the Silver Throat did stand upon the high wooden bench to chant the song of the mountain-cleaving. As he shouted with great wind from his chest, his arms waved like the wings of a frightened crane. Beside him sat a clumsy meat-carver, a fellow with thumbs like turnips, who was hacking at a greasy shoulder of swine. The carver did slip upon a marrow-bone that had fallen to the planks, and in his stumbling, he did cast an entire earthen bowl of hot pig-fat, black soot, and thick berry-wine directly across the shoulders of the High Singer.

The white fleece of the sky-ram was instantly murdered. The thick grease did soak through the threads of silver, and the black charcoal soot made ugly greasy trails from the right collar down to the left hem. The High Singer ceased his chanting; his throat made a noise like a dry pump in an empty well. He looked down upon his holy white mantle, and his heart became full of black bile and great shame, for on the following Transmuday, the ambassadors from the island of Assyria were to arrive in their tall boats to witness his singing, and if he stood before them clad in spotted swine-swill, his royal honor would fall into the gutter like a dead gull.

“Call forth the water-women!” roared Vagn, until the roof-timbers shook with his rage. “Call forth the kettle-boilers and the river-scrubbers! If this fleece is not made as white as the snow upon the high volcano before Helios reaches noon on the morrow, their hides shall be stripped to make thongs for my war-carts!”

Then came three sisters who were famous for their wash-troughs. The first sister took the mantle to the edge of the bitter sea and beat upon it with flat stones of river-slate. But alas, the salt did only set the charcoal deeper, and the beating broke seven of the silver wires, so that the runes fell into the pebbles and were lost. The second sister took the mantle and boiled it inside a copper pot with soap made of hog-lye and wild nettle-juice. But alas, the fleece curled upon itself like a burning hair, shrinking until the High Singer could not have pulled the mantle over his left forearm, while the grease only spread outward into a wider, greasier yellow ring. The third sister, seeing the ruin wrought by her kin, fled into the briar-woods and was seen no more.

Vagn of the Silver Throat sat upon his stool and wept tears of black fury, sharpening his broad iron skinning knife upon an oily whetstone.

Now it happened that an apprentice boy who ran errands for Hrefna the Loom-Woman was crouching in the corner of the hall, chewing upon a gristle-bone. Seeing the great calamity, he ran through the darkness, through the tall fern-bogs where the marsh-frogs barked like dogs, until he reached the clay hovel of his mistress.

“Hrefna!” cried the boy, grasping for his breath. “The High Singer has dirtied his great fleece with roasted pig-oil and sour mash! The kettle-women have beaten it into a rag, and tomorrow he will cut their hides from their bones, and after he has cut their hides, he will come to burn all the looms in the valley because his heart is sour!”

Hrefna sat upon her low three-legged stool in the darkness. She was not sleeping, nor was she fully waking, for she held between her palms a slender branch of mountain ash that had been split by a bolt of blue lightning three summers prior. She had stuck through its belly a small round stone of black pumice that she had fished out of a steaming mud-geyser, and through the head she had driven a small ring of yellow brass she had found inside the belly of a river-pike.

“Bring the ruined skin to my hearth,” said Hrefna. Her voice was like two dry shingles rubbing together in an autumn wind. “Bring it without touching it with greasy fingers, and do not let the dogs lick the grease-spots as you run.”

The boy ran like a hare and returned bearing the heavy, sodden, blackened bundle of cloth. It smelled of scorched pig and bitter brine, and it lay upon Hrefna’s dirt floor like a drowned sheep.

Hrefna did not fetch a tub of water. She did not fetch the harsh white soap of lye. Instead, she took from a leather pouch beneath her cot a tiny, hard pebble that glowed with a sick purple light, the size of a copper coin, which she had dug from the belly of a horned mire-beast that had died of old age behind her barn. She pushed this small purple stone into a hole she had scraped into the ashwood stick, sealing it fast with the sticky pitch of mountain cedars.

Then Hrefna sat upon her heels and closed her outer eyes. She began to breathe through her teeth with a whistling sound, entering the trance that the ancient northern-folk called the Seiðr. In this seeing, she did not behold the room of clay, nor the sweating boy, nor the sputtering tallow lamp. She beheld the great mantle not as wool, but as a vast, tangled forest of white tree-trunks stretched across an empty void. And clinging to these white tree-trunks she saw thousands of small, fat, black-bellied goblins of soot, and great sticky pools of yellow hog-fat that were eating the bark of the trees like rot.

“You have no seat at this loom,” whispered Hrefna to the dark things in the weave. She did not speak with her tongue, but with the thought-conduit that lived behind her forehead. “You are foreign threads. You are unspun waste. Return to the smoke from whence you dropped.”

She took the ashwood stick by its slender waist and began to turn it between her thumbs and her forefingers. As the black pumice stone on the bottom began to spin, it did not drop to the earth, but remained floating in the air at the level of her breast, as though an invisible daughter of the wind was holding it upright.

A great sighing sound came out of the brass eyelet at the tip of the wood. It was not water that came forth, nor was it the breath of a man, but a thin, dry smoke that smelled of dried herbs, cold stones, and the sharp bite of high mountaintops where no moss grows. This pale vapor did not fall down like rain; it crept along the cloth like white snakes, sliding between the warped threads of wool and under the ruined silver stitches.

The apprentice boy fell backward upon a sack of grain, crossing his fingers against the evil eye, for he saw that where the white smoke crawled, the yellow grease did not melt into water, but pulled itself together into tiny round beads of dry dust. The black soot of the chimney-pit let go of the white fibers with a tiny snapping sound, like lice dying in a hot comb. Slowly, steadily, the spinning ashwood stick sucked the blackness and the grease up into its black volcanic stone whorl, where the impurities were ground into nothingness by the invisible turning of the spiritual teeth within the wood.

For three hours of the night Hrefna turned the wood, chanting a strange counting-song that had no words of the Banpo tongue, but only sounds like geese flying over frozen water. With each turn of the spindle, the shrunken, wrinkled wool of the mantle began to stretch itself out once more. The fibers laid themselves down flat and proud, as if they were back upon the shoulders of the great sky-rams eating sweet mountain grass. The silver wires, which had been bent and tarnished like old lead by the kettle-women’s beating, straightened their backs and began to shine with an unnatural, cold white gleam.

When the cock did crow for the fourth hour of the morning, just as the sky behind the hills was turning from the color of an old bruise to the yellow of a duck’s foot, Hrefna blew three times into the brass ring at the top of the stick.

The spinning ceased. The dry white vapor vanished into the thatch. The stick fell into her lap, cold and silent as an old spade-handle.

Upon the dirt floor lay the great mantle of Vagn of the Silver Throat. It was not wet. It was not damp with the morning dew. It was whiter than the clouds that float above the mages’ towers in the high sky. The spots of roast-pig were gone entirely, leaving not even the faintest shadow of grease upon the hem. When the boy reached out his trembling hand to touch the wool, it felt as smooth as the pelt of a young otter, and from the cloth arose a perfume like wild mountain cedar and sun-dried linen, with not the slightest stench of the banquet hall remaining upon it.

The boy took the mantle upon his outstretched arms, walking as if he carried the eggs of an eagle, and ran to the longhouse of the chieftain.

When Vagn of the Silver Throat looked upon his mantle, his mouth fell open so wide that his beard touched his belt-buckle. He turned the garment over seven times, seeking the yellow stain of the swine-drippings, but he found only pure white wool and silver runes that sparkled in the morning sun like fresh hoarfrost. He smelled the collar, expecting the sour stink of beer, but he drew into his lungs only the cool scent of mountain air and sweet resin.

“By the grey eyes of Gaialilith!” shouted Vagn, forgetting his skinning knife upon the bench. “The river-witches have made my cloak better than it was when it came from the hands of my own mother! Bring forth three fat sheep and two sacks of ground meal, and take them to the hovel of Hrefna the Loom-Woman, for she has saved the pride of the hall before the foreign ships touch the wharf!”

Thus did Vagn sing before the ambassadors of Assyria, clothed in his brilliant white fleece that shone like a star in the noon-light, and his fame was spread across the seventy-three islands of the moon as the most splendid singer of the eastern waters.

Hrefna accepted the three sheep and the sacks of meal, but she did not keep them long, trading them instead to an itinerant tinker for six yards of fine silver wire and another lump of volcanic pumice from the high mountains. She sat in her clay hovel, carving more sticks of ashwood and boring small holes for the purple stones that fall from the bellies of beasts, knowing that as long as men sit by smoky hearths and eat greasy meat with unwashed fingers, there will always be a need for the dry smoke that cleans without water.

And the travelers who passed through Banpo in the seasons that followed did always stop at her door to have the dust of the long wagon-roads lifted from their sashes, marvelling that a thing made of wood and rock could wipe away the stains of the world without leaving a single drop of wetness behind.

Moral of the Story: It is an idle folly to cleanse with force and heavy water that which was fashioned by quiet thread-craft; for violence upon a delicate weave only deepens the taints of the world, whilst patience, subtle craft, and an orderly mind can lift the heaviest grime without breaking a single fiber.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

Name: The Distaff of Maelstrom Vapors

  • Classification: Arcane Artifact / Enchanted Focus
  • Appraisal Sanity Loss: 0 Sanity points
  • Activation Sanity Cost: 1 Sanity point per activation
  • Magic Point Cost: 2 Magic Points per standard cleaning; 4 Magic Points for trace scent removal
  • Physical Description: An eight-inch hand-turned spindle of darkened, petrified ashwood fitted with an engraved brass cap and a porous volcanic stone whorl. When held in a state of quiet concentration, faint spiraling violet light flickers along silver runic wires set into the wood, emitting an arid, cedar-scented haze.

Artifact Mechanics and Operational Syntax:

  • Weave Purge (Standard Operation): The investigator holds the spindle in hand, expends 2 Magic Points, and spends one full combat round (or two minutes of narrative time) passing the tool across garments or fabric gear. A localized cloud of dry, superheated planar vapor envelopes the textiles. This lifts and disintegrates all biological matter, including dried blood, soot, marsh muck, and chemical oils, leaving the fabric completely clean, dry, and pressed without the use of water.
  • Forensic Erasure: Expending 4 Magic Points and 1 Sanity point allows the artifact to target occult secretions, biological spatter, and fine particulate traces. This completely removes chemical or organic evidence from a crime scene or apparel. Anyone attempting a Forensics or Spot Hidden roll to discover traces on the treated item suffers an Extreme Penalty die.
  • Chemical / Corrosive Countermeasure: If a noxious biological fluid, acid, or contact poison strikes the user’s clothing, the user may spend 2 Magic Points as an immediate Dodge-window action to direct the vapor over the contaminated area. The investigator makes an Occult or Power (POW) roll. A regular success neutralizes the corrosive or toxic fluid before it seeps through to cause bodily harm; a fumble causes the internal stone matrix to crack, rendering the tool non-functional until repaired by someone with knowledge of ancient crafting lore.

Blades in the Dark

Name: The Leviathan-Bone Ash Spindle

  • Item Load: 1 Load (Equipped utility item, kept on a belt loop or tool strap)
  • Quality Rating: Tier I Rare Arcane Focus (Specialized Laundry & Forensic Apparatus)
  • Stress Cost: 0 to 1 Stress depending on potency
  • Harm / Resistance Interaction: Can be used to resist consequences regarding physical contamination, acid burns, or tracking hounds.

System Mechanics and Operational Syntax:

  • Ghost-Vapor Extraction: When you activate the spindle, you channel ambient electroplasmic vapor through its porous pumice whorl to scour away grime, blood, chemical dye, or sewer filth from clothing without water. Doing so requires no stress for mundane attire, completely restoring formal garments to pristine condition within seconds.
  • Covering Your Tracks (Stress Function): During a score or downtown cleanup, you may spend 1 Stress to activate the spindle’s deep-draw function across the crew’s gear. This completely eradicates all blood spatter, gunpowder grime, and distinctive scent signatures left behind during an infiltration or scuffle. When calculating Heat generated at the end of a score where significant physical or biological mess was left on the operatives, this tool grants +1d to your roll when resolving whether the Bluecoats or rival gangs can track the crew through physical trace evidence.
  • Pushing the Spindle: You may spend 1 Stress to produce an immediate, blinding puff of dry, sulfurous vapor into an opponent’s face during a skirmish. This improves your Position or Effect (e.g., from Risky / Standard to Risky / Great) when attempting to break away, escape a grapple, or evade detection in close quarters.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition, 2024 Revision)

Name: Spindle of the Cleansing Vapor

  • Item Type: Wondrous Item
  • Item Rarity: Common
  • Attunement: Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster
  • Weight: 1 lb.

Item Traits and Operational Mechanics:

  • Misty Restoration: As an action while holding the spindle, you can point it at a set of garments, a cloak, or a suit of armor with a cloth underlayer within 5 feet of you. The spindle expels an envelope of arid, fragrant steam that instantly strips away non-magical dirt, mud, blood, soot, and perspiration, leaving the material dry, fully pressed, and smelling faintly of cedar and lavender. This function can also safely clean delicate ceremonial fabrics, paper scrolls, and canvas maps without causing water damage.
  • Odor Suppression: While the spindle is in your possession, your mundane worn gear retains no foul biological scents or hunting pheromones. Any creature that relies on Wisdom (Perception) checks using scent to track or locate you makes those checks with Disadvantage.
  • Caustic Neutralization (Recharge 5–6): When you are subjected to an attack or hazard that deals non-magical acid damage, or when caustic slime or venom adheres to your garments, you can use your Reaction to trigger a burst of dry vapor. You gain Resistance to the triggering instance of damage as the fluid is instantly vaporized off your protective gear before penetrating. Roll 1d6 at the start of each of your turns; on a 5 or 6, this reaction becomes available again.

Knave (Second Edition)

Name: Ashwood Loom-Spindle

  • Item Slots: 1 Slot (Carried or worn in a belt sash)
  • Item Type: Arcane Tool / Utility Instrument
  • Durability: 3 / 3

Item Traits and Operational Mechanics:

  • Dry Laundering: Once per turn during exploration, the bearer can use their action to direct the spindle along any fabric, rope, or woven armor. The item produces an odorless, superheated draft of dry mist that instantly removes mud, gore, dung, and water rot. Items cleaned in this manner are immediately restored to a dry, immaculate state, preventing cloth rot and rust from transferring between metal chain links and cloth arming doublets.
  • Fray Restoration: Once per day during a delve, the user can spend 10 exploration minutes in focused meditation with the spindle over a piece of damaged fabric gear (such as a frayed rope, torn backpack, or ragged cloak). This restores 1 point of lost Item Durability to that specific non-metal item.
  • Disruptive Steam Burst: When engaged in close melee, the bearer may sacrifice 1 point of Durability from the spindle to emit an abrupt, concussive cone of scalding dry vapor. The targeted foe must immediately make a Wisdom or Dexterity save. On a failed save, the foe is blinded and thrown off balance until the start of the next round, allowing the bearer to automatically withdraw from melee without suffering a free attack. When the spindle’s Durability drops to 0, its pumice whorl cracks in half and its internal crystal shatters, destroying its enchantments permanently.

Fate (Fate Condensed)

Name: Ash-Turned Thread-Scourer

  • Aspect: Pristine Garments Through Planar Vapor
  • Item Type: Personal Utility Focus (Extras / Stunt-Granting Focus)
  • Cost: 1 Refresh (as an Extra)

Stunts and Mechanical Rules:

  • Instantaneous Dry Laundering: Because you carry the Ash-Turned Thread-Scourer, you may instantly eradicate mundane dirt, dried gore, marsh sludge, and pungent odors from any textiles within arm’s reach without using water. When doing so during narrative scenes, no roll is required. In scenes where physical presentation, royal decorum, or formal status matters, you gain a +2 bonus to Create an Advantage using Crafts or Rapport to establish situational aspects such as Impeccably Attired or Spotless Formal Vestments.
  • Vaporous Evasion: Once per scene, when an opponent attacks you using caustic chemical liquids, blinding thrown grime, or tracking scent-markers, you may spend a Fate Point to invoke the spindle’s reactive vapor vent. When you do, use Crafts instead of Athletics to defend against the attack as the superheated dry cloud disintegrates the offensive fluid mid-air, automatically clearing any immediate scene hazards clinging to your worn apparel.

Cypher System & Numenera (Cypher System Rulebook / Numenera Discovery)

Name: Vapor-Weft Resonator

  • Level: 2 (Target Number: 6)
  • Item Form: Artifact (Handheld turned-hardwood rod wrapped in superconductive micro-filaments, fitted with a brass emitter nodule and a porous pumice counterweight)
  • Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (Check upon triggering active dispersal effects)

Artifact Traits and Mechanical Rules:

  • Effect (Passive): The bearer’s worn garments, cloaks, and utility packs passively repel environmental dust, ambient dampness, and static buildup. The user gains an asset to defense rolls against non-damaging environmental contamination, mud-slick terrain fouling, and scent-tracking predators attempting to track them across wilderness environments.
  • Effect (Active – Dry Extraction): An action spent tracing the rod along a non-living fibrous or flexible surface releases a localized cloud of desiccating, aromatic micro-steam. This action completely extracts organic and synthetic taints, deep stains, foreign oils, and hazardous bile from worn gear, restoring the target item to immaculate condition within one round without causing moisture wear or warping.
  • Disruptive Steam Vent (Active – Tactical Disengagement): By expending 1 point from your Speed Pool, you trigger an overload pulse from the pumice counterweight to spray a blinding jet of hot, dry particulate steam in a short arc. You ease all Speed-based defense tasks and escape attempts by one step against one melee opponent until the end of your next turn. Roll for Depletion immediately after this action is performed.

  • Immaculate Garb (Passive): While the spindle is secured to a belt or carried openly in hand, the user’s attire is completely immune to mundane grime, deep stains, mud splatters, and rain saturation. The character gains a +1 bonus to Persuasion rolls when interacting with nobles, high-ranking guild officials, or diplomats who place significant value on immaculate personal presentation.
  • Cleanse Textiles (1 Power Point): As an action, the user channels dry steam over clothing, canvas tents, bedrolls, or rope. This immediately removes toxic slimes, non-magical filth, and biological odors from the target item. Bloodhound beasts and tracking entities suffer a -2 penalty on Notice or Survival rolls made to track the character by scent for the next 4 hours.
  • Blinding Steam Pulse (1 Power Point): When targeted by a melee attack, the user may activate the spindle as an interrupt or action to produce an abrupt, superheated vapor blast. The user makes an Athletics or Occult roll opposed by the target’s Agility. With success, the attacker is Distracted until the end of their next turn; on a Raise, the attacker is both Distracted and Vulnerable.

Shadowrun (Sixth World)

Name: Hermetic Steam-Whorl Spindle

  • Item Type: Enchanted Focus / Magical Tool (Sustained Utility Focus)
  • Force Rating: Force 1
  • Karma Binding Cost: 2 Karma
  • Item Availability: 2 (Legal)
  • Cost: 1,500 nuyen
  • Physical Description: A hand-carved, eight-inch rod of petrified ashwood tipped with a machined brass vent and balanced with a porous volcanic basalt whorl. Silver telescoping conductive traces run along its body to anchor the spellcraft.

Game Mechanics and System Syntax:

  • Forensic Scour (Major Action): When the bound user spends a Major Action to sweep the spindle along worn armor, clothing, or a textile gear pack, it releases a superheated envelope of dry, mana-infused steam. This instantly disintegrates all non-living biological residue, soot, cordite particles, street grease, and blood spatter without wetting or scorching the fabric. When law enforcement or corporate forensic teams perform an Assensing or Biotech + Logic test to collect genetic material or trace evidence from treated garments, apply a -2 dice pool penalty to their test.
  • Chemical / Sludge Mitigation (Reaction): When hit by an attack delivering contact toxins, acidic slime, or chemical payloads targeting clothing, the user may spend 2 Minor Actions to vent an immediate burst of arid purging steam. The user makes an immediate Sorcery + Magic test against a threshold equal to the chemical’s Toxicity or Strength rating. On a success, the liquid agent is flash-vaporized off the garment before it can permeate to the runner’s flesh.
  • Scent Wash (Passive): As long as the spindle is held in hand or hanging active from a web gear loop, the runner’s personal aroma is suppressed beneath a subtle cedarwood and ozone scent. Dual-natured guard beasts, cybernetic olfactory sensors, or drones attempting an Olfactory Perception test to track the runner suffer a -2 dice pool penalty.

Starfinder (Second Edition)

Name: Magitech Vapor-Spindle

  • Item Level: 1
  • Price: 110 credits
  • Bulk: Light (L)
  • Hands: 1

For the next 1 hour, creatures relying on the scent sense to detect or track you take a -2 item penalty to their Perception checks, and Survival checks to follow your physical trail through tracking odors take a -2 item penalty.
  • Reactive Flush [reaction] (Manipulate); Trigger: You take acid or caustic chemical damage that hits your worn environmental suit or armor; Effect: You discharge the spindle’s emergency bypass valve. You gain acid resistance 2 against the triggering attack as the caustic agent is instantly flash-boiled off your outer seals before it compromises underlying seals.

Traveller (Mongoose Traveller 2nd Edition)

Name: Model-4 Thermal Desiccation Baton

  • Tech Level: TL 12 (Specialized Laboratory / Field Maintenance Gear)
  • Mass: 0.5 kg
  • Power: Internal rechargeable battery pack (provides 20 standard cleaning cycles per charge, recharges via standard shipboard power in 30 minutes)
  • Cost: Cr 400

Item Rules and Technical Syntax:

  • Non-Liquid Decontamination: The baton uses a micro-sonic heating lattice and a porous ceramic whorl to generate a controlled envelope of desiccated, high-velocity vapor. Passing the wand over a vac suit fabric layer, shipboard uniform, or personal luggage completely neutralizes and extracts dried organics, alien spores, oils, and particulate dirt in a single combat round (6 seconds) without requiring water or harsh liquid solvents.
  • Chemical Hazard Neutralization: If a traveler’s protective garments are splashed with corrosive alien fluids, organic venom, or mild acids, an action spent engaging the baton’s override switch neutralizes the contaminant. The traveler rolls an Electronics (Sensors) or Science check with a DM of +1. Success indicates the fluid is flashed away into inert mineral powder before causing degradation to armor points or protective seals.
  • Forensic Clean: Deploying the baton over clothing or a scene of engagement completely destroys loose hair, skin flakes, and powder discharge. Anyone attempting an Investigate check to gather biometric traces or biological residue from the scrubbed fabrics suffers a DM of -2.

Warhammer 40,000 (Wrath & Glory)

Name: Sanctified Vapor-Censer Spindle

  • Tier: 1
  • Value: 3 (Common / Utility)
  • Keywords: IMPERIUM, ADEPTUS MINISTORUM, UTILITY
  • Rarity: Uncommon
  • Weight: 0.5 kg

Item Traits and System Syntax:

  • Purification of the Sacred Vestments: Favored by lower-ranking Ministorum scribes, ceremonial vergers, and itinerant confessors, this turned-wood spindle contains a miniaturized steam sanctifier and pumice filter. Expending a Simple Action allows the bearer to direct the spindle along vestments, robes, or flak coat facings. The device releases an arid, cedar-and-incense-scented dry vapor that instantly scourges all battlefield gore, sacred engine soot, promethium grease, and blood from the cloth. The material is left entirely dry, pressed, and fragrant without soaking the underlying armor.
  • Removal of the Taint: When the wearer has traversed filthy environments such as chem-slums, xenos-breeding hollows, or charnel battlegrounds, a full minute spent cleansing apparel completely purges all foul biological tracking scents. Beasts or trackers attempting an Awareness test to track the character by scent suffer a +2 Difficulty penalty.
  • Acid Dispersal Countermeasure: If hit by a physical attack featuring the Corrosive or Acid quality that targets the character’s armor, the bearer may spend their Reaction and expend 1 point of Glory to direct the high-pressure dry steam jet. The incoming caustic fluid is instantly vaporized on the outer surface of the armor, reducing the damage suffered from that specific strike by 2 and preventing the continuous armor-degradation penalty of the acid for that round.
