Lore
In the ancient shield-walls and holmgang duels of Saṃsāra, victory belonged not solely to those who split bone, but to those who stripped the iron from an adversary’s hand. The vitkir of the contested borders carved the Grip-Shatterer’s Ash Vambrace for duelists, border-wardens, and arena arbiters tasked with subduing violent berserkers without taking their lives. Bound by ancient Norse binding staves, the arm-guard channelizes kinetic shock into opposing weapons, rattling grips loose and wrenching blades free with the sudden snap of frost.
Description
A single curved forearm guard crafted from dense, oil-cured mountain ash, reinforced with riveted bands of cold-forged bog iron. Carved deeply into the center grain are three Elder Futhark runes: Algiz (the warding elk, protection and parry), Hagalaz (the hailstone, destructive disruption and shock), and Thurisaz (the thorn/giant, reactive force and breaking). The engraved lines are filled with a paste of crushed river-slate and powdered lodestone. Two supple elk-hide straps with bronze buckles secure the vambrace tightly to the forearm, lined beneath with boiled felt to absorb the impact of incoming strikes.

Detailed Stats
- Item Tier / Rarity: Tier 1 / Common
- Weight: 1.2 lbs
- Durability: 35/35
- Attunement: Requires 10 minutes spent strapping the vambrace to the lead arm while repeatedly parrying an iron weapon against an ash training post, concluding with a whispered verse of the binding stave to Hagalaz.
- Proficiency Required: Light Armor / Brawling or Martial Defense / Runic Vitki (Tier 1)
Passive Magic
- Iron-Snare Ward (Algiz): When executing an active parry or block against an incoming melee weapon, the vambrace momentarily magnifies the user’s friction and defensive surface tension. The wearer gains heightened stability against weapon maneuvers, preventing the wearer themselves from being disarmed or having their guard knocked aside.
- Resonant lodestone Pull: Metal weapons that make physical contact with the vambrace face a brief magnetic stickiness. This microscopic drag slows the adversary’s recovery speed, making their weapon feel unwieldy for a split second immediately following a deflecting block.
Activable Magic
- Jolt of the Hail-Burst (Action or Reaction): The user channels kinetic impact into the Hagalaz and Thurisaz runes upon catching an enemy’s weapon on the reinforced ash face.
- Effect: The runes flare with a dull, concussive gray glow, sending a violent shockwave of numbing vibrations up the attacker’s weapon haft or blade. The attacker must make a physical resistance check against the sudden jolt; on a failure, the attacker involuntarily drops the weapon to the ground at their feet.
- Cooldown: 2 times per Short Rest.
- Galdr of the Snapped Grip (Action): The user strikes their vambraced forearm directly outward against an adjacent foe’s armed hand or weapon shaft while speaking the binding word of Thurisaz.
- Effect: A sharp kinetic pop—sounding like an ash branch snapping under heavy snow—strikes the opponent’s fingers and wrist. The target suffers a direct wrenching force, forcing an immediate contested roll to retain their weapon. If the opponent fails, the weapon is flung 10 feet in a direction chosen by the user.
- Cooldown: 1 use per Long Rest.

Acquisition and Trade of the Grip-Shatterer’s Ash Vambrace
- Holmgang Armories and Dueling-Ring Pits: Located behind sunken dirt dueling rings and island trial grounds where clan disputes are decided by single combat, these timber sheds smell of liniment, sweat-soaked leather, and iron filings. Veteran duel arbiters test the arm-guard by striking its face with a dull iron broadsword, watching for the dull gray flash of Hagalaz and checking that the shockwave buzzes cleanly through the striker’s wrist. A retiring arena champion or impoverished duelist selling an authentic piece receives a buyout of 18 silver pieces. Up-and-coming arena fighters, judicial champions, or honor-bound duelists seeking a decisive edge without slaying their kinsmen buy one for 25 silver pieces.
- Frontier Watch-Barracks and Border-Warden Quartermasters: Operating inside fortified timber stockades along contested marsh borders, these no-nonsense supply vaults cater to rangers and patrol-bailiffs tasked with arresting cattle thieves and hostile scouts. The quartermaster evaluates the piece by checking the rivet heads and passing an iron knife over the slate-and-lodestone inlay to verify magnetic drag along the Algiz channel. A discharged scout turning in surplus border gear receives 16 silver pieces in coin or rations. Field wardens, bounty hunters, and highway constables who must bring quarry back alive pay 22 silver pieces.
- Shield-Biter Guilds and Brawling Longhouses: Situated in rowdy port towns and mercenary encampments, these raucous guildhalls feature indoor sparring pits littered with sawdust and broken bucklers. Weapons-masters test the vambrace by buckling it to an apprentice’s arm and having an entrant deliver an overhead axe blow, ensuring the shockwave jolts the haft free without splintering the cured mountain ash. A bruised pit-fighter liquidating gear after a loss receives 15 silver pieces or a cask of black spruce ale. Pugilists, tavern bouncers, and non-lethal crowd-tamers buy one for 24 silver pieces.
- Vitki Woodcarvers and Runemaster Lodges: Nestled in forest sanctuaries and secluded river bends where sacred ash trees are ritually coppiced, these fragrant workshops are lined with chisels, oil-quench troughs, and drying bundles of medicinal herbs. The carver validates the piece by tracing the Thurisaz stave with an antler stylus while chanting, listening for the deep kinetic thrum from the iron reinforcements. An itinerant wanderer or disciple parting with an heirloom receives 20 silver pieces in raw silver, dried lodestone, or runic charms. Apprentices and visiting warriors preparing for border trials purchase a master-carved vambrace for 28 silver pieces.
- Black-Market Bandit Caches and Fence Dens: Hidden in abandoned peat mines and shadowy dockside cellars where smuggled cargo is sorted, these illicit operations value gear that can disarm a guard without leaving bloody murder charges. The fence inspects the guard by snapping the elk-hide buckles to ensure the leather is supple and checking for structural stress cracks in the curved ash core. A thief or footpad fencing a piece stripped from an ambushed border-sergeant is paid a discreet 14 silver pieces. Highwaymen, kidnappers, and outlaw ringleaders looking to disarm caravan guards during holdups purchase one for 32 silver pieces.
Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Grip-Shatterer’s Ash Vambrace
- Mud-Slick Holmgang Rings and Formal Dueling Circles: Upon square trial-cloaks pinned down at the four corners with hazel stakes, space is severely restricted and killing a rival may trigger an enduring blood-feud. Defensively, when an arrogant challenger steps forward with a heavy broadaxe to cleave a shield, the duelist brings up the ash arm to catch the flat of the axe head; the Iron-Snare Ward absorbs the bone-splitting impact, while the magnetic lodestone pull momentarily binds the blade to the guard, leaving the overcommitted foe off-balance. Offensively, before the opponent can reset their stance, the wearer triggers the Galdr of the Snapped Grip, smashing the reinforced ash directly against the rival’s armored knuckles; the sharp kinetic snap rattles through their fingers, pitching the prized ancestral blade out of the dueling ring into the mud to secure an immediate, bloodless judicial victory.
- Crowded Longhouse Feasts and Melee-Brawls: Inside smoky feasting halls packed with trestle tables, roaring hearth-fires, and drunken kinsmen, drawn steel turns small arguments into massacres. Defensively, when a drunken house-carl draws a seax knife across a narrow table, the wearer raises their forearm to intercept the downward thrust; the boiled felt beneath the cured ash deadens the blow, and the passive warding staves ensure the wearer’s own arm remains steady and unyielding against the surprise attack. Offensively, channeling the Jolt of the Hail-Burst, the defender turns the block into an outward parry; the runes flare with a dull concussive shock that numbs the brawler’s hand to the elbow, sending the dagger clattering into a platter of roast pork and neutralizing the threat before blood stains the hall’s rush mats.
- Narrow Mountain Defiles and Scree Choke-Points: Along thin goat tracks cut into jagged granite where shield-walls cannot form and footing is treacherous, disarming an adversary eliminates lethal reach. Defensively, when an ambush spearman thrusts from the crags above, the scout catches the iron spearhead on the bog-iron bands of the vambrace; the Resonant Lodestone Pull creates an instantaneous microscopic drag, stalling the spear’s recovery stroke and preventing the ambusher from pulling back for a second jab. Offensively, stepping inside the spear’s effective reach, the scout strikes the ash timber against the ash spear-haft with the Galdr of the Snapped Grip; the explosive kinetic pulse snaps the spear right out of the ambusher’s grip, sending it tumbling down the precipice and forcing the mountain raider to yield or retreat across the rocks.
- Underworld Vault Heists and Shadow-Corridors: Within subterranean stone tunnels, vault corridors, and secret treasure cellars where lethal violence alerts the entire guard garrison, silence and control are vital. Defensively, when an armored vault sentinel rounds a dark archway and levels a heavy morningstar, the infiltrator brings the vambrace across their chest to absorb the crushing blow; the bog-iron plates distribute the concussive force across the forearm without bruising the bone or rupturing muscle. Offensively, triggering the Jolt of the Hail-Burst, the shockwave travels backward through the chain of the morningstar, instantly locking the guard’s fingers in cramp and forcing them to drop the weapon onto the soft felt of the infiltrator’s cloak before a single shout of alarm can be raised.
- Dense Old-Growth Forests and Tangled Birch Groves: Among tight forest brush, hanging branches, and briar thickets where long weapons tangle and enemies dart between mossy trunks, close-quarter wrestling determines survival. Defensively, when a beast-cultist or feral skirmisher leaps from the brush with a jagged hunting bill, the warden raises the ash guard to intercept the curved hook; the mountain ash wood bites into the blade, while the Iron-Snare Ward locks the user’s guard firmly in place, keeping the lethal hook away from the jugular. Offensively, driving the vambraced arm forward into the cultist’s wrist while releasing the kinetic burst of Thurisaz, the force rips the billhook from their grasp and hurls it ten feet into the deep briars, stripping the wild attacker of their only weapon and ending the woodland skirmish without a prolonged chase.

Perception of Activation:
- Sight:
- User’s Perspective: Upon triggering the activation, the crushed slate and lodestone paste packed into the carved channels of Algiz, Hagalaz, and Thurisaz flares with a sharp, dull-gray, storm-like flash. Translucent concentric ripples of shockwave warp the air around the ash timber, while tiny arcing static motes dance between the riveted bog-iron bands.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers see a sudden burst of chalky pale luminescence pulse across the defender’s forearm. The air visibly ripples in a foot-wide ring around the block, and the opponent’s striking weapon vibrates so violently that its contours appear blurred to the eye before tumbling free.
- Positives: Gives immediate, unmistakable visual feedback that the runic kinetic barrier has successfully discharged, allowing the user to capitalize on the opening instantly.
- Negatives: The bright concussive flare eliminates any cover in darkness or shadow, broadcasting the defender’s exact guard position to nearby ranged combatants.
- Hearing:
- User’s Perspective: The impact is heralded not by a hollow wooden clatter, but by a sudden, ear-splitting report resembling a thick ash bough snapping under heavy snow, followed by an immediate, deep iron hum that echoes through the bones of the forearm.
- Observer’s Perspective: Nearby combatants hear a sharp, whip-like concussive pop followed by the metallic chime of vibrating steel, ending with the loud clatter of the attacker’s weapon striking the floor.
- Positives: The sharp crack can startle surrounding adversaries, momentarily seizing their attention and disrupting coordinated enemy strikes.
- Negatives: The gunshot-like snap echoes loudly off stone walls or valley crags, alerting the entire dungeon floor or encampment to active combat.
- Smell:
- User’s Perspective: The ambient smell of blood, sweat, or damp loam is instantly cut through by a sharp, crisp scent of shattered river-slate, cold wet iron, and ozone, like the first crack of lightning in an autumn hail squall.
- Observer’s Perspective: Those within close proximity catch a fleeting whiff of pulverized rock and burnt wood ash lingering in the draft of the impact.
- Positives: The sharp ozone tang clears the user’s sinuses and heightens combat adrenaline.
- Negatives: The distinct odor of scorched ash and magnetized iron lingers in enclosed spaces, leaving an easy scent-trail for tracking beasts or hounds.
- Taste:
- User’s Perspective: A momentary, metallic tang of cold galvanized iron and sour copper tingles along the back of the palate and teeth, identical to the taste of biting down on foil or touching a tongue to cold iron in winter.
- Observer’s Perspective: If the attacker is caught closely within the concussive backlash, they experience a sharp, dry taste of lime dust and sour chalk upon their lips.
- Positives: Serves as an immediate sensory benchmark that the kinetic resonance has cleared the user’s system without backfiring into their nervous core.
- Negatives: Leaves a lingering dry, chalky taste in the mouth that can induce coughing if breathing heavily during prolonged exertion.
- Touch:
- User’s Perspective: Despite intercepting a bone-crushing blow, the boiled felt lining deadens the kinetic recoil to a dull, numbing vibration resembling the buzzing of a hornet’s nest. A brief rush of cool air washes down the forearm as the runes discharge outward rather than into the wielder’s arm.
- Observer’s Perspective: The attacker feels an agonizing, violent jolt travel instantly from the point of impact through the weapon’s pommel and up into their wrist and elbow, causing the fingers to involuntarily spasm open in muscle cramp.
- Positives: Spares the defender from fractured ulnae, sprained wrists, or bruised bone when intercepting strikes from massive two-handed weapons.
- Negatives: Repeated activations in rapid succession leave a persistent tingling numbness in the wearer’s fingers, slightly degrading fine motor control immediately following the fight.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Kinetic Vector-Sight (Vectorsense):
- User’s Perspective: For a fraction of a heartbeat prior to impact, the user intuitively perceives the oncoming weapon’s momentum as a taut, heavy line of gray tension. The vambrace naturally steers the lead arm to intercept the vector at its weakest mechanical angle.
- Observer’s Perspective: The defender appears to move with uncanny, prescient precision, snapping the forearm into place with zero wasted motion just inches before the fatal blow connects.
- Positives: Dramatically eases the timing needed to execute high-risk parries against fast-moving blades or unpredictable flails.
- Negatives: Processing incoming physical force as spatial lines causes minor optic strain and brief spatial disorientation if surrounded by multiple flanking attackers.
- Severance of the Gripping Will:
- User’s Perspective: The wearer feels a distinct, snapping psychic cord between the opponent and their blade—an intuitive sense that the adversary’s intent to hold their weapon has been shattered before their fingers have even finished opening.
- Observer’s Perspective: The disarmed attacker experiences a momentary lapse of focus and demoralizing shock, staring blankly at their empty palm as if forgetting how to form a fist for half a second.
- Positives: Ensures the disarm is clean and decisive, preventing the enemy from executing an immediate follow-up grapple or drawing a sidearm in the same motion.
- Negatives: Emitting a wave of localized disruption can briefly jolt sympathetic magical foci or delicate attuned talismans worn on the user’s own belt.
- Kinetic Vector-Sight (Vectorsense):
Forging Protocol 58: The Grip-Shatterer’s Ash Vambrace
- Materials Needed:
- One seasoned billet of mountain ash heartwood (quartered grain, knot-free, harvested during the winter dormancy).
- Two pounds of raw bog iron ore (smelted into cold-workable bar stock).
- Two ounces of crushed magnetic lodestone sand.
- Two ounces of pulverized river-slate powder.
- One thick strip of boiled wool felt (eight by ten inches, for inner shock dampening).
- One cut of oil-tanned elk hide (split into two securing straps with matching bronze pin buckles).
- Eight cold-forged iron rivets with wide washers.
- Linseed oil and natural pine rosin blend (for weatherproofing the timber).
- Pure bone glue or hide mastic.
- Tools Required:
- Woodworker’s drawknife, curved spoke-shave, and hollowing gouges.
- Steam bending trough and curved timber drying mold.
- Forge hearth, flat anvil, cross-peen hammer, and hot-cut chisels.
- Hand gravers, V-parting chisels, and antler polishing burnishers.
- Leather punch, awl, and stitching needles with waxed linen thread.
- Mortar and pestle (for mineral grinding).
- Skill Requirements:
- Woodcraft & Timber Shaping: Rank 2 or higher.
- Cold-Iron Forging & Armoring: Rank 1 or higher.
- Runic Vitki / Galdr Carving: Rank 1 or higher.
- Crafting Steps:
- Rough out the mountain ash billet with the drawknife and hollowing gouges to fit the curvature of a forearm, tapering the wrist profile while leaving a thick central ridge.
- Steam the shaped ash blank for four hours in the trough until pliable, then clamp it firmly around the curved mold to cure for forty-eight hours.
- Forge two reinforced bands of bog iron, curving them to match the exterior arc of the cured timber; punch four rivet holes through each band while cherry red.
- Carve the Elder Futhark runes deeply into the central spine of the dried ash wood: Algiz at the elbow crest, Hagalaz directly over the mid-forearm, and Thurisaz near the wrist terminus.
- Grind the lodestone sand and river-slate into a fine, uniform magnetic flour using the mortar and pestle.
- Mix the mineral flour with heated hide mastic to form a thick, dark gray paste, pressing it firmly into the engraved runic channels until slightly raised.
- Allow the paste to set, then scrape the surface flush with a flat razor and burnish the rune edges with an antler point until smooth.
- Coat the exterior wood with multiple applications of boiled linseed oil and pine rosin, allowing each coat to dry to a water-resistant sheen.
- Fit the two bog-iron reinforcement bands across the top and bottom quarters of the vambrace, drilling matching pilot holes through the ash core.
- Peen the cold-iron rivets through the metal bands, timber core, and the elk-hide buckle straps, securing the leather firmly to the outer chassis.
- Cut and line the interior concave surface with the boiled wool felt, securing it using bone glue to create a shock-absorbing buffer against the wearer’s skin.
- Conclude the bonding rite by striking an iron chisel against an unworked ash log three times while holding the vambrace against the wood, chanting the three binding names of the runes to awaken the shockwave resonance.
Iron-Banded Branch and Broken Knuckles of Bear-Slayer at Narrow Rock
In the ancient turning when the great elk had not yet taught the small beasts to hide their hoof-prints, and the white sky-ice was still crawling down the gray teeth of the crags, the folk of the mud-ditches possessed no kings of silver crowns. In those crude seasons, the only law spoken between the smoke-huts was the length of a man’s ash-pole and the broadness of his shoulder-joints. If a hunter brought down a red-deer with his flint, three larger hunters took up river-clubs and smashed his ribs until his breath ceased, dividing the marrow among themselves and laughing into their matted hair.
Among the high ridges of the Split-Bone Mountain lived a hulking butcher of men named Brand Half-Troll. His back was as wide as three hay-sledges lashed side by side, his arms were coated in coarse black bristles like an old hog, and his head lacked ears, having lost them to frost and teeth in his first ten winters. He carried a monstrous two-handed cleaver of dark bog-iron called Skull-Reaper, a weapon so monstrously thick and ill-balanced that no two common thralls could lift it from the dirt. Brand did not parley with neighbors; he did not offer milk to wandering spirits; he merely walked down from his crag when the snow melted, kicked in the turf-doors of the small clans, and took their dried fish, their daughters, and their bronze cauldrons. If any man raised so much as a willow switch to bar his passage, Brand swung his black iron and sheared the man into red halves like a turnip split for a stew-pot.
Now, in the lower peat-meadows lived an old wood-turner named Ketil Three-Fingers. He was neither tall nor broad; his legs were crooked from sitting thirty winters upon the shaping-bench, and his beard was as thin and yellow as dead marsh-grass. Ketil possessed no broadaxes, no coats of stitched horn, and no sons to stand before his threshold. He had only an ancient hearth-house of peeled pine and a sacred grove of mountain ash trees that grew upon the cold scree where the lightning-serpents were known to strike the stone.
When the midsummer moon grew round, Brand Half-Troll walked down the scree to Ketil’s gate. He dragged Skull-Reaper behind him, carving a deep, ugly furrow through the moss.
“Old bark-gnawer!” bellowed Brand, and his voice sounded like large stones tumbling down a dry well-shaft. “The snow has departed, and my meat-racks are bare! Hand over the six fat goats that graze behind thy hut, and the dried lingonberries stored in thy earthen pots, or I shall cleave thy house-beam and split thy withered crown from nose to tail-bone!”
Ketil sat upon a three-legged stool before his door, scraping the fat from a strip of elk-hide with an antler horn. He did not look up, nor did he tremble into his beard.
“The goats belong to the hearth-fire, Brand,” said Ketil, and his voice was dry like dead birch leaves rustling in a ditch. “The berry-pots belong to the cold months when the sky is blind. A man who taketh what his own back hath not bent to grow is worse than a maggot in the porridge. Put down thy iron slab and eat a bowl of warm broth, or turn thy great buttocks back up the goat-track.”
Brand roared until the spruce-needles fell from the roof-eaves. The black bristles on his neck stood upright like hedgehogs. He raised Skull-Reaper high above his hairy shoulders with both fists, bringing the heavy iron edge down in a terrible whistling arc meant to smash Ketil, his stool, and the dirt beneath him into a paste of bone and peat.
Yet Ketil did not roll into the ditch. He did not raise a shield of boiled calf-hide.
He merely lifted his left arm.
Upon his forearm was strapped a curved piece of mountain ash wood, cured in the fat of dead wolves and held together with two bands of cold-hammered swamp-iron. Down its center were carved three deep grooves—the warding horns of Algiz, the rough hail-stone of Hagalaz, and the crooked spine of Thurisaz—filled with the ground black sand of the lightning-stone and dark river-slate.
The great iron blade struck the curved wood directly upon the line of Hagalaz.
Lo! There followed no wet crunch of splintering timber, nor the wet squirt of an old man’s marrow!
There burst forth from the ash-wood a sound so sudden and frightful that three eagles roosted a league away took flight into the clouds! It was the sound of an ancient oak snapping in two under the weight of three winters of ice—KRAK-THOOM! A blinding flash of pale, chalk-colored light flared from the iron rivets, and a ring of cold gray wind tore the grass from the roots around Ketil’s stool!
The tremendous shockwave did not bite into Ketil’s arm, for the boiled sheep-felt beneath the timber swallowed the blow like deep bog-water. Instead, the whole furious mountain-weight of the strike rushed backward through the black iron blade of Skull-Reaper!
Brand’s hairy wrists were seized with a violent shuddering fit. The kinetic thunder traveled up the iron into his palms; his fingers were violently pried apart as if by hot iron chisels; the skin between his thumbs tore like wet parchment. The terrible cleaver was ripped from his grip, spinning thrice through the sky before plunging six feet deep into the peat twenty paces away!
Brand stood upon the moss, swaying like a drunken ox. His knees knocked together; his mouth hung wide and slack; his black palms were curled into stiff, useless claws that trembled and dripped dark blood onto his boots. He stared at his empty hands as though he had never seen fingers before in his life.
“What poison is this, thou grey rat?” wheezed the Half-Troll, clutching his forearms to his chest to stop the violent buzzing in his elbows. “Didst thou hire an invisible giant to strike my knuckles with a stone mallet?”
“No giant dwelleth here save the folly in thy own skull,” Ketil replied, standing slowly from his stool and stepping toward the giant. “Thy great strength is a wild river without an embankment; it pusheth against the mountain, and the mountain hath returned the push into thy own joints.”
Brand, weeping with wrath and the burning frost of his numbed nerves, lowered his horned head and lunged forward with his bare, bruised paws to strangle the old turner.
Ketil did not draw a knife. He swung his left forearm outward, striking the hard ash face directly across Brand’s reaching wrists while whispering the third name of Thurisaz.
A second concussive crack echoed off the hills, sounding like a frozen river splitting during the spring flood. The impact caught Brand’s lead wrist with such explosive, repelling force that the giant was spun completely around, his boots leaving the ground before he crashed face-down into the stinging nettles. His forearm was not broken, but the gripping tendons were frozen stiff as winter reeds; he could not curl so much as a single fingernail into a fist.
The great terror of the mountains lay in the nettles, groveling and sniffling like a beaten hound before the sheep-troughs.
“Take thy cleaver from the dirt, Brand,” Ketil said, pointing with the iron-banded vambrace toward the peat-furrow.
“I cannot,” whimpered the giant, rolling onto his side, his face gray and smeared with peat. “My fingers have turned to dry horn. They will not bend to the shaft.”
“Then carry it between thy teeth, or leave it for the crows to sharpen their beaks upon,” said Ketil. “And when thou walkest among the huts of the valley, remember that iron is only as fierce as the flesh that squeezeth the haft. When the gripping hand is emptied, the warrior is only a large heap of lard that consumeth too much broth.”
Brand Half-Troll scrambled to his feet without his cleaver, wailing like a calf whose mother had fallen down a ravine, and fled up the mountain scree with his deadened arms flapping at his sides. He never returned to the peat-meadows; the great cleaver rusted away into orange earth until the sheep-herders used its blunt spine to scrape dung from their boots.
And from that season forward, the wood-turners of the crags carved the three runes of the hail, the horn, and the thorn into their arm-timber whenever they walked into the lands of violent men, knowing that the greatest folly of the brute is his belief that he cannot be made to drop his iron.
Moral of the Story: The brute who relieth wholly upon the crushing weight of his weapon and the terror of his violent grip is easily undone; for when his own fury is turned backward against him by the wise and patient defender, the fierce warrior is stripped of his pride without a single drop of his blood being spilled, proving that the stubborn hand that refuseth to open in peace will surely be broken open in shame.

Blades in the Dark
The Grip-Shatterer’s Vambrace
Arcane Armor / Martial Ward (1 Load)
- Description:A rugged mountain ash bracer strapped with bog-iron bands and inscribed with warding runes. Crafted to shatter an opponent’s leverage and strip blades from their hands without lethal bloodshed.
- Mechanics:
- Iron-Snare Ward (Passive): When you face a physical consequence involving being disarmed, unbalanced, or pinned in close combat, you may check this item’s box to count as Armor specifically to resist that consequence.
- Lodestone Drag (Passive): When you clash with an armed foe at close quarters, your defensive parries gain potency whenever the adversary relies on heavy metal blades, polearms, or crushing clubs.
- Jolt of the Hail-Burst (Active): When you Skirmish defensively against an armed strike, spend 1 Stress to release a concussive shockwave upon impact. On a 4/5 or 6 result, the attacker is completely disarmed, their weapon clattering away out of arm’s reach in addition to any positional advantage you gain.
- Galdr of the Snapped Grip (Active): Spend 2 Stress and roll Wreck or Skirmish to forcefully strike an opponent’s weapon hand. You achieve Great Effect toward neutralizing their ability to fight, sending their weapon flying across the room and leaving their arm temporarily paralyzed from the kinetic backlash.
