Runic 34 of the Truce Weavers Silver Torque

Lore

In the frost-bitten halls and blood-feud assemblies of Saṃsāra, peace is not won through soft words, but through binding law and sacred oath. The vitkir of the high moots forged the Truce-Weaver’s Silver Torque for heralds, arbiters, and skalds sent to break deadlocks between clashing clans. Placed around the throat of an envoy, the runic ring calls upon the ancient laws of hospitality, clearing the speaker’s voice of deceit and compelling armed listeners to respect the sacred sanctity of parley.

Description

A heavy, twisted neck-ring fashioned from braided sterling silver and electrum, terminating in two stylized wolf-head terminals locked jaw-to-jaw around a small iron oath-ring. Along the ribbed spirals of the silver wire, three Elder Futhark runes are deeply etched: Ansuz (the divine voice, truth, and eloquence), Gebo (the gift, exchange, and honorable alliance), and Tiwaz (justice, sacred law, and the solemn oath). The runic channels are inlaid with powdered river-pearl and crushed sky-blue turquoise, which emit a warm, steady glow when an agreement is spoken in good faith.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Tier / Rarity: Tier 1 / Common
  • Weight: 0.5 lbs
  • Durability: 30/30
  • Attunement: Requires 10 minutes of quiet recitation of ancestral peace-laws while holding the iron oath-ring at twilight, sealing the bond with a small sip of clean spring water or mead.
  • Proficiency Required: Diplomacy / Oratory / Runic Vitki (Tier 1)

Passive Magic

  • Cadence of the All-Father (Ansuz): The bearer’s spoken voice carries with resonant clarity, cutting through background tumult, clattering shields, or roaring winds without requiring shouting. The speaker cannot be drowned out by mundane heckling during formal assemblies or parleys.
  • Aura of the Hearth-Guest (Gebo): While the torque is visibly worn and the bearer holds no unsheathed weapons, the user projects an aura of formal guest-right. Hostile intelligent creatures capable of understanding language feel an instinctual, cultural hesitation to strike first before formal greetings or negotiations have commenced.

Activable Magic

  • Tongue of the Sovereign Moot (Action): The user touches the Ansuz and Gebo runes at the throat and speaks a clear statement of intent or proposed compromise.
    • Effect: For 10 minutes, the speaker’s words bypass language barriers, allowing all sapient listeners within 30 feet to comprehend the meaning and emotional sincerity of the speech in their native tongue. Additionally, the user gains heightened insight to detect whether any direct responses contain outright lies or broken oaths (manifesting as a cold prickle of the silver against the collarbone).
    • Cooldown: 2 times per Long Rest.
  • Galdr of the Bound Sword-Arm (Action): The user grasps the iron oath-ring between the wolf heads and recites the stave of Tiwaz, demanding a formal cessation of hostilities for parley.
    • Effect: An invisible, 15-foot-radius circle of truce radiates outward from the bearer for 1 minute. Creatures within the circle must overcome their own sense of dishonor to draw weapons or initiate physical violence; any creature attempting an attack must hesitate, suffering a severe penalty to their opening strike and causing the torque to ring out like a chiming bell to expose the betrayal.
    • Cooldown: 1 use per Short Rest.

Acquisition and Trade of the Truce-Weaver’s Silver Torque

  • Thing-Stead Silversmiths and Law-Speaker Pantries: Clustered near great outdoor assembly mounds and tribal thing-steads, these soot-stained timber longhouses smell of burning charcoal, horn tallow, and pine-scented drafting ink. Law-speakers and moot-masters inspect the neck-ring by dripping pure well-water over the twin wolf-head terminals; if the turquoise inlay along Tiwaz and Ansuz brightens to a sky-blue hue without clouding, the item’s runic integrity is confirmed. A retired law-speaker, weary skald, or blood-feud survivor selling an authentic torque receives a standard settlement buyout of 20 silver pieces. Envoys, newly chosen clan arbiters, and moot delegates seeking to establish authority before the next grand assembly can purchase one for 26 silver pieces.
  • Skaldic Guild-Lodges and Mead-Hall Sanctuaries: Nestled in bustling high-king ports and communal hall complexes where bards, genealogists, and court poets record dynastic oaths, these timbered keeps ring with the strumming of lyres and murmured sagas. Master singers verify the piece by holding a bronze tuning fork beside the electrum spirals to listen for the sustained, clear harmonic echo drawn out by the Ansuz rune. A wandering storyteller or envoy selling an unneeded heirloom is offered 18 silver pieces in coin, rare song-scrolls, or aged mead casks. Skaldic apprentices, heralds dispatched to volatile borderlands, or peace-weavers pay 24 silver pieces to secure the adornment.
  • Noble Emissary Vaults and Chancery Jewelers: Operating in stone-walled provincial capitals and palatial garrison courts behind heavily barred oak gates, these elite establishments cater to lordly chancellors, foreign ambassadors, and treaty commissioners. The court appraisal-master tests the torque using an electrum scratch-needle and an acid touchstone, confirming the purity of the river-pearl slurry packed into the runic channels. A mercenary diplomat or veteran courier pawning a salvaged token receives a flat buyout of 22 silver pieces. Courtiers, crown heralds, and noble negotiators tasked with defusing border skirmishes purchase a certified piece for 30 silver pieces.
  • Underworld Neutral-Ground Exchanges and Fence-Sanctuaries: Hidden within neutral drinking dens, subterranean guild vaults, and truce-taverns where rival syndicates broker shadow-pacts without drawing daggers, these secretive brokers deal in discreet collateral. The fence tests the torque by forcing two brawling ruffians within its presence and verifying that Galdr of the Bound Sword-Arm dampens their weapon hands. A rogue, exiled cutpurse, or assassin fencing an item looted from a dead magistrate receives a discreet, no-questions cash payout of 24 silver pieces. Shadow-brokers, cartel peace-arbiters, and syndicate negotiators needing personal insurance against treachery during gang summits pay a premium of 36 silver pieces.
  • Warden-Shrines and Wayfarer Hospice-Chapels: Set at mountain crossroads, river ferries, and contested frontier borders where travelers seek shelter under ancient guest-right laws, these simple stone shrines are maintained by elder hospitallers and oath-priests. The keeper validates the piece by setting it upon the altar horn while speaking the hospitality vow, watching for the river-pearl powder in Gebo to glow with a faint, warm white light. A pilgrim or traveler parting with the torque to pay for long-term sanctuary receives 16 silver pieces’ worth of travel gear, dried provisions, or winter woolens. Frontier mediators, peacemakers traveling into bandit lands, or dispute-settlers acquire one for 22 silver pieces.

Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Truce-Weaver’s Silver Torque

  • Raucous Mead-Halls and High-Clan Feasting Benches: In crowded longhouses where blood-feuds simmer beneath drunken boasts and drawn seaxes, verbal insults quickly spiral into slaughter. Defensively, when a warlord’s champions rise with axes drawn to avenge an ancient slight, the envoy touches the torque to evoke the Aura of the Hearth-Guest, projecting the ancient weight of guest-right to freeze their weapon arms mid-reach and force the room to honor hospitality until terms are heard. Offensively, the speaker projects their voice through Cadence of the All-Father, slicing cleanly through clattering drinking horns, brawling hounds, and drunken catcalls to corner the chieftain with a public recitation of broken clan laws, turning the hall’s collective judgment against the warmonger without ever laying a hand on a hilt.
  • Mist-Choked Bog Crossings and Raider Ambush Trails: Along secluded corduroy roads where swamp bandits and outlaws lie in wait behind sod embankments, ambushes are sudden and merciless. Defensively, when armed brigands spring from the reeds with spears leveled, the diplomat raises an open palm and triggers the Galdr of the Bound Sword-Arm. The sudden, 15-foot zone of runic truce imposes immediate hesitation on the ambushers, dulling their initial charge and giving vulnerable allies crucial moments to seek cover behind wagons. Offensively, the envoy activates the Tongue of the Sovereign Moot, issuing an immediate, unshakeable ultimatum in the bandits’ rough regional tongue that cuts through their bravado, revealing the cowardice of their leader and dividing the gang’s loyalties before a single arrow is loosed.
  • Parley Grounds upon Contested Mountain Passes: High above frozen river valleys where two opposing shield-walls stand arrayed for slaughter on rocky scree, tempers are razor-sharp. Defensively, when an impetuous warrior breaks ranks to launch a javelin and shatter the parley, the torque chimes like an iron bell as the oath-ring dampens the traitorous strike, exposing the treachery to both armies and halting a catastrophic general melee. Offensively, the arbiter walks the neutral strip between the lines, activating the torque to test the rival generals’ demands; as false terms or hidden ambushes are spoken, the silver chills against the envoy’s collarbone, allowing the speaker to instantly call out the enemy commander’s deceit in front of their own honor-bound troops.
  • Subterranean Vaults and Underworld Shadow-Summits: Within torchlit stone crypts and secret guild halls where rival guildmasters meet in uneasy truce over contraband territories, poisoned blades and backstabs are standard currency. Defensively, when negotiations sour and crossbowmen in the shadows prepare to spring a crossfire trap, the user grasps the iron oath-ring to lock the parley chamber down with the Galdr of the Bound Sword-Arm, penalizing treacherous snap-shots and ringing out an alarm that spoils the element of surprise. Offensively, the mediator utilizes Tongue of the Sovereign Moot to read the subtle shifts in the ring’s temperature, catching a rival syndicate boss in a direct lie regarding stolen goods, and leveraging the exposed perjury to force a bloodless surrender of the disputed territory.
  • Desolate Monster Lairs and Primal Boundary Shrines: In forgotten frontier caverns where territorial beast-clans, ogres, or primal giants perceive any mortal entry as an act of war, communication seems impossible. Defensively, walking forward with sheathed weapons and head bowed, the diplomat relies on the Aura of the Hearth-Guest to forestall the beast’s instinctual charge, providing the breathing room needed to initiate ritual overtures. Offensively, activating the Tongue of the Sovereign Moot, the bearer speaks words of ancestral domain and tribute directly into the creature’s mind, presenting a formal covenant that establishes clear hunting boundaries, effectively neutralizing a rampaging threat through binding honor rather than a costly battle of attrition.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: When the runes are touched or the oath-ring grasped, the turquoise and river-pearl channels along the spiraled silver ignite with a luminous, calm sky-blue luminescence. The eyes of the carved wolf terminals glow with pale green-blue witchfire, and a faint, circular ring of pale light faintly shimmers upon the ground at a fifteen-foot radius.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers see the diplomat’s neck encircled by a soft, tranquil silver-blue halo. The runes on the neck-ring flare visibly through hair, cloaks, or collars, casting sharp, dancing shadows, while the central iron ring seems to briefly pull ambient torchlight inward.
    • Positives: Provides clear, unmistakable visual confirmation of parley and sacred hospitality, reassuring anxious or wavering delegates that negotiations are under ancient divine sanction.
    • Negatives: The bright, glowing runes eliminate the possibility of stealth and draw the immediate gaze of snipers, sentries, or hostile spectators directly to the speaker’s throat.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: The ambient cacophony—clashing swords, drunken shouts, howling gale winds—seems to drop in pitch and volume, muffled as if under a canopy of heavy wool. In contrast, the user’s own voice resonates with deep, bell-like timbre, vibrating clearly through their own jaw and sternum. When an oath is broken or violence attempted, a sudden, ringing chime like a struck iron bell reverberates sharply against the ear.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The speaker’s voice suddenly projects with arresting, effortless clarity, sounding as though the diplomat were speaking calmly from just three feet away, regardless of distance or roaring background noise. If an attack is attempted, listeners hear an echoing, metallic chime that hangs in the air with unmistakable discordance.
    • Positives: The speaker never needs to strain their voice or shout over howling storms, brawling feasthalls, or clattering shield-walls.
    • Negatives: The chime of broken peace is loud and piercing, instantly shattering quiet parleys and making subtle or secretive retreats impossible once triggered.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: The foul stench of stale ale, unwashed warriors, rotting bog-mud, or charring campfires is replaced by a crisp, bracing aroma of fresh mountain meltwater, crushed mint, and the clean tang of polished silver.
    • Observer’s Perspective: A faint, cool breeze carries the scent of pure winter spring water and cedarwood smoke across those gathered within the circle of truce.
    • Positives: Refreshes the speaker’s senses and cuts through nausea-inducing battlefield stench or poisoned dungeon air.
    • Negatives: The sudden scent of highland springs in stagnant dungeons or fetid swamps is distinctly unnatural, alerting sensitive tracking beasts or monsters to the presence of an outsider.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: A light, sweet sweetness coats the back of the tongue, reminiscent of pale clover honey and clean river water, easing any parched hoarseness or dryness in the throat.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders who speak in good faith experience a fleeting, pleasant sweetness upon their lips, while those harboring treacherous intent taste bitter ash or salt.
    • Positives: Prevents dry mouth, coughing, and voice cracks during critical, high-stakes speeches and debates.
    • Negatives: A deceitful user or a sudden realization of betrayal triggers an intense metallic bitterness on the tongue that can cause involuntary gagging.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: The heavy silver neck-ring warms soothingly against the collarbone, pulsing like a gentle, rhythmic heartbeat when truth and mutual accord are spoken. If a listener speaks a direct lie or broken promise, the silver instantly chills into biting, sub-zero frost against the skin.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Those who step inside the truce circle feel an immediate, subtle drop in physical tension across their shoulders, as if an invisible, firm hand were resting lightly upon their scabbards to discourage sudden movement.
    • Positives: Delivers instant, tactile lie-detection to the wearer via temperature changes without requiring complex magical scrutiny.
    • Negatives: The sudden freezing shock against bare skin when a bold lie is uttered can make the wearer flinch visibly if caught unprepared.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Web of Sacred Oaths (Oathsense):
      • User’s Perspective: The speaker perceives invisible, taut silver cords running from the torque’s central iron ring to the chests of every thinking being within the circle. Thick, glowing cords represent sincere intent to negotiate, while frayed, darkened, or vibrating cords signal impending treachery, hidden daggers, or hostile ambushes.
      • Observer’s Perspective: The diplomat’s gaze appears uncannily discerning, locking directly onto the eyes of schemers and traitors with unsettling accuracy.
      • Positives: Exposes the ringleader of a conspiracy or the weak link in an opposing delegation before open conflict erupts.
      • Negatives: Reading multiple fractured loyalties in a large, hostile assembly produces mental strain, a thrumming headache, and sensory fatigue.
    • Aura of the Inviolable Guest:
      • User’s Perspective: The user feels surrounded by an intangible, ancient mantle of ancestral law. Striking first feels intuitively repellant, while walking unarmed toward drawn blades feels shielded by the unseen weight of millennia of tribal tradition.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Hostile individuals experience an overwhelming cultural and psychological pang of dishonor whenever they consider raising a hand against the envoy, feeling an irrational dread of ancestral curse and social ruin.
      • Positives: Prevents hair-trigger skirmishes, preemptive arrow volleys, and panicky strikes from nervous guards.
      • Negatives: The protection relies entirely on moral and cultural resonance; mindless automatons, ravenous beasts, or beings completely devoid of honor or sapience feel minimal hesitation to strike.

Forging Protocol 34: The Truce-Weaver’s Silver Torque

  • Materials Needed:
    • Eight ounces of high-purity sterling silver ingots.
    • Two ounces of electrum alloy (50/50 gold-silver blend).
    • One small forged iron hoop (one-inch diameter, forged from bog-iron quenched in well water).
    • One ounce of pulverized natural river-pearl powder.
    • One ounce of crushed high-grade sky-blue turquoise.
    • Half-ounce of clear natural mastic resin mixed with purified bone glue.
    • Two thimblefuls of consecrated spring water or fermented honey-mead (for the runic quench).
  • Tools Required:
    • Jeweler’s charcoal hearth with hand-bellows.
    • Wire-drawing plate, draw-tongs, and hand-swage block.
    • Hardened steel chasing gravers and curved needle files.
    • Agate burnishing stones and jewelers’ rouge cloth.
    • Lost-wax casting flask with fine refractory investment plaster.
    • Brazing torch with natural borax flux.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Precision Silversmithing & Wire Braiding: Rank 2 or higher.
    • Runic Vitki / Galdr Inscription: Rank 1 or higher.
    • Lapidary Inlay & Enameling: Rank 1 or higher.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Melt the sterling silver and electrum in separate crucibles, drawing the sterling silver into four heavy, pliable wires and the electrum into two thinner accent strands using the draw-plate.
    • Anneal the wires to a dull cherry glow, cooling them in clear spring water to maintain ductility.
    • Bundle the six strands into a symmetrical core and clamp one end in a leather-padded swage vise.
    • Tightly braid and counter-twist the silver and electrum wires into an open-ended, rigid neck-hoop, burnishing the spiral flutes with an agate stone to ensure an even, ribbed texture.
    • Carve the two mirrored wolf-head terminals in beeswax, detailing the open jaws with deep grooves to grip the central iron ring.
    • Cast the wolf terminals in sterling silver using the lost-wax investment process, filing and cleaning the inner jaws to seat the iron ring flush.
    • Braze the wolf-head sockets onto the tapered ends of the braided neck-hoop using borax flux and silver solder.
    • Interlock the cold-forged bog-iron oath-ring between the opposing jaws of the wolf terminals, peening the fangs shut around the hoop to permanently entrap the iron ring without solder.
    • Using the hardened steel gravers, carve the Elder Futhark runes into the outer ridges of the braided silver: Ansuz near the throat hollow, Gebo along the right collar, and Tiwaz along the left.
    • Pulverize the river-pearls and sky-blue turquoise into an ultra-fine mineral slurry, suspending the powders in the heated mastic resin.
    • Press the paste firmly into the engraved rune channels, wiping the excess clean and polishing the metal surface with an agate burnisher until the inlay sits perfectly flush with the silver.
    • Perform the moot-sanction quench: gently warm the torque over sweet-burning cedar embers, then pour a mixture of consecrated spring water and aged honey-mead over the wolf heads while reciting the ancestral staves of the Three Laws.

Two-Headed Dog-Ring and Great Mouth-Clash of Iron-Fathers at Mound of Gray Skulls

In the uncounted cycle before the three moons were numbered, when the great frost-ox of the northern rim had not yet broken its horn against the mountain, the clans of the gray-stone hill-forts knew not the spelling of ink nor the measurement of boundaries. In those harsh turnings of the sun, whenever an ox strayed into the rye-patch of a cousin, thirty men took up wedges of bronze and chipped flints to smash the teeth of thirty other men. The rivers ran red like the belly of a slit salmon, and the earth was bitter with unburied bones that choked the plough.

Now upon the high valley called the Valley of the Seven Crows, there ruled two house-fathers of immense bulk and thick necks. The first was Earl Torstein Boar-Girth, whose beard was as red as a fox’s tail and whose temper was like fat thrown upon dry pine-needles. He had sixty mail-shirts of heavy bronze, eighty heifers with notched ears, and an axe whose haft was wrapped in the leather of five bears. He boasted at every beer-table: “My tongue is the iron edge! Where my axe biteth, no man giveth answer, for a severed skull maketh no complaints at the moot!”

The second house-father was Earl Harek Pale-Eye, whose face was gray like river-silt and whose hall was built of oak-trees pulled up by their roots. He had four hundred white sheep, nine daughters who wove coats of wolf-pelt, and a two-handed iron cleaver called Spine-Biter. He spat into the turf and declared: “The world is an open belly, and they who speak many words are dogs who lack teeth to bite the marrow-bone! When Torstein’s shadow crosses my fence-ditch, his calves shall hang from my smoke-hole!”

For seven winters their men had beaten each other’s heads with stones. The sheep of Torstein had been driven into Harek’s ditches; the hay-ricks of Harek had been put to torch by Torstein’s thralls. When the spring thaw came upon the eighth winter, there remained between the two valleys no whole fence, no unbroken shield, and not enough grain to feed a brooding hen. Yet both lords called for their remaining warriors to assemble upon the Mound of Gray Skulls, where the blood of their grandfathers was dried into the dirt, swearing by all the gods of the wind that not one mother’s son should leave the hill alive until one clan was wiped from the naming-sticks.

The two hosts drew near. They stood forty paces apart, glaring through the freezing mist. Their beards bristled with ice; their knucklebones were white upon their spear-shafts; the war-horns of ox-horn blew like the howling of starved wolves in a dead forest.

Then stepped forth between the spears a maiden of the moot whose name was Astrid Nine-Songs. She was not broad like an ox-butcher, nor did she hold a buckler of boiled hide. Her arms were thin like rowan-boughs, her kirtle was gray wool without fringe, and around her throat she wore a heavy ring of twisted silver and pale electrum. At the ring’s open neck sat two wolf-heads of cold metal, snapping their jaws shut upon a ring of black marsh-iron. Upon the silver twists were cut the three ancient glyphs: the open mouth of Ansuz, the tied cord of Gebo, and the high pillar of Tiwaz, filled with the blue flour of sky-stones and the crushed marrow of river-pearls.

Earl Torstein bellowed like an elk with an arrow in its flank: “Get thee behind the baggage-sledges, girl! The iron is hot, and the ground thirsteth for salt! If thou dost squeak of peace, my spearmen shall walk through thy wool-skirt!”

Astrid did not step backward. She did not raise a shield, for she held none.

She reached her right thumb to the groove where Ansuz was cut, and she took the iron oath-ring between the wolf-mouths with her left fingers. She spoke no curse, but opened her throat to call the ancient law of the Three Benches.

And lo! A great marvel fell upon the assembly!

Though forty horns were blowing and two hundred men were stamping their hide-boots upon the frozen stone, her voice went forth not like a woman shouting against the gale, but like the ringing of an iron bell struck in a small bed-chamber! It passed through the horn-bells and drowned them; it passed through the bronze nasal-guards of the helmets and vibrated within the teeth of the warriors. Each man heard her words as though she stood an elbow-length from his ear, speaking in the secret cradle-tongue taught by his own grandmother, though there were three distinct speeches spoken upon that hill!

“Hear the speech of the Guest-Right and the Sacred Ring!” she called, and the words carried the cold, clean smell of high melting snow and mountain mint, sweeping away the stench of wet wolf-pelts and sweat. “He who lifteth an iron blade within the circle of the Two Wolves shall find his arm dry like salt-fish! The ancestors look down through the sky-smoke, and they see two fat hogs wallowing in their own dung, biting their own tails and calling it honor!”

Earl Harek Pale-Eye was seized with fury that a girl should name him a hog before his spearmen. With a roar like a cracking pine, he swung his great cleaver Spine-Biter from his shoulder, lunging forward five paces to split Astrid from crown to brisket!

Yet as his boot crossed the invisible perimeter fifteen paces from her silver torque, a strange sickness seized the air!

The iron oath-ring between the silver wolves gave forth a long, terrible chime—TING-CLANG—that hung in the valley like an icicle striking a brazen kettle. A great shiver went down Harek’s spine. His right shoulder turned heavy as an anvil; his fingers loosened on the boiled leather grip; the great iron blade dropped from his hand and stuck point-down in the freezing gravel with a dull thud. He stood gasping like a perch thrown upon the grass, clutching his collarbone, his knees knocking beneath his wolf-coat.

“What witchcraft is this?” howled Harek, spitting blood where he had bitten his own cheek in rage. “She hath bound my joints with witch-thread!”

“It is not witch-thread, thou fool of gray hair!” said Astrid, stepping toward him with her throat glowing with pale azure fire. “It is the weight of the oaths thy grandfather swore at the well-head, which thou hast spat upon! The silver knoweth the liar and the oath-breaker, and it will not suffer a thief to draw blood under the shadow of the parley-ring!”

Earl Torstein, seeing his rival disarmed, laughed with a great beer-belly laugh and stepped forward with his bear-wrapped axe: “Then the day is mine! The Pale-Eyes have dropped their iron, and I shall take their sheep before the sun reacheth the pine-top!”

He too ran forward with his axe high, but Astrid looked upon him and spoke the stave of Gebo, which is the gift that requireth a return. The torque upon her neck flushed with an inner turquoise brilliance so intense that Torstein stopped his charge, his eyes burning as if he had stared into an unclouded hearth-fire. The breath died in his breast. A sudden, deep dread of his own ancestors fell upon his heart, whispering that if he struck an unarmed woman upon holy ground, his roof-tree would burn before winter, his cows would drop dead calves, and no skald would ever sing his name save as a coward who struck down heralds.

He lowered the bear-haft, trembling with shame, looking down at his boots like a whipped hound.

Then Astrid sat herself down upon the highest gray skull-stone between the two lines of spears. She touched the cool silver of Tiwaz, the rune of the balance and the just judgment.

“Sit,” she said to the two Earls. “The sun is high, the sky is clear, and the wolves upon my breast have clamped their iron upon your fury. You shall speak your claims not with the iron that breaketh skulls, but with the tongue that can be measured.”

For seven hours the two Earls sat upon the mossy scree, while their spearmen stood with numb toes in the thawing grass. Whenever Torstein spoke a lie concerning the boundary-ditch, Astrid’s neck-ring turned to ice against her skin, and she struck her hand upon her breast, crying: “Thy word is rotten, Torstein! The silver turns to winter frost at thy tongue!” And Torstein would curse, swallow his bile, and speak the truth of the furrow.

Whenever Harek claimed a heifer that had not been his father’s, the torque chimed with a dull, leaden clatter, and Astrid called the shame upon him before his nine daughters, until Harek beat his breast and gave back the stolen ear-mark.

By the time the red sun fell behind the jagged pines, the sheep had been divided by number; the boundary-ditch was marked with three upright river-stones; and the marriage of Harek’s third daughter to Torstein’s second son was spoken under the sacred sanction of the Gebo rune. The two Earls, who had come to the mound to choke the earth with the bodies of two hundred men, stood together and drank sour ale from the same horn, their hands shaking not with wrath, but with the holy awe of the law that had broken their madness.

When they offered Astrid forty arm-rings of twisted gold and twelve milk-cows for the torque, she pushed their hands aside.

“Gold is for those who buy horses; iron is for those who cut wood,” she said. “This silver was twisted by the vitkir who heard the first words spoken by the gods when the earth was yet soft. It belongs to no Earl’s treasure-chest. It belongeth to the road, to the longhouse door, and to the bitter pass where men forget that they are men and imagine themselves to be wolves.”

She turned her face to the north and walked down from the Mound of Gray Skulls, her kirtle swinging in the twilight wind; and from that day onward, in all the valleys of Saṃsāra, no herald went between two armies without a braided torque of silver at his throat, to remind the raging chiefs that words spoken in truth are stronger than an hundred shields of bronze.

Moral of the Story: The loudest roar of kings and the heaviest blades of war are powerless against the sacred weight of ancestral truth and solemn covenant; for the rage that can burn an hundred halls is easily quenched by the arbiter who speaketh without fear, weareth the mantle of sacred law, and knoweth that true strength lieth not in the slaughter of enemies, but in the binding of their dishonor through the unyielding majesty of the oath.

    • Cadence of the All-Father (Passive): Your voice projects effortlessly up to 300 feet, remaining clear and intelligible over howling winds, clattering shields, or roaring crowds without requiring you to shout. You have Advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks made during formal moots, parleys, or legal assemblies.
    • Aura of the Hearth-Guest (Passive): While you wear the torque openly and wield no drawn weapons, intelligent humanoids capable of speech feel a cultural reluctance to initiate combat before speaking. You have Advantage on Initiative rolls during an encounter that starts from negotiation or dialogue.
    • Tongue of the Sovereign Moot (Action): You touch the runes of Ansuz and Gebo. For 10 minutes, your spoken words are understood by any creature within 30 feet that knows at least one language. Additionally, whenever a creature within 30 feet deliberately lies to you, the torque grows frigid against your throat, granting you Advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks to perceive deception for the duration. Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a Long Rest.
    • Galdr of the Bound Sword-Arm (Action): You grasp the iron oath-ring and speak the stave of Tiwaz. A 15-foot-radius aura of truce emanates from you for 1 minute. The first time an enemy creature within the aura attempts an attack roll before the truce ends, it must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature has Disadvantage on the attack roll, and the torque chimes with an audible ring that alerts all creatures within 60 feet. This property can be used once, and you regain the ability to do so after finishing a Short or Long Rest.
