Lore

The Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402 is a singular relic of “Bio-Linguistic Engineering,” forged in the silent altitude of the Serpent’s Spine. It was created by a rogue sect of the Order of the Faded Whisper who sought to bridge the gap between ancient wind-lore and the physical evolution of the soul. By distilling the shifting phonemes of the Syllable of Becoming into the star-infused parchment of a Whisperwind Tome, and binding the resulting energy with the bronze-silk mesh of the Twin Currents, they anchored the ethereal spirit of Minion 47 into a physical anchor. Legend says the first bearer of the Covenant was a mute archivist who, upon donning the relic, spoke a single word that forced an entire legion of steam-automatons to rewrite their own internal logic and bow in silence.

Description

This Tier 4 artifact manifests as a pair of integrated, full-arm gauntlets that extend from the fingertips up to the shoulders, connected across the upper back by a heavy leather yoke. The “bracer” sections are crafted from river-bronze scales that seem to ripple like water, while the “tome” has become a series of articulated, bark-parchment plates that slide over the forearms. At the center of the chest yoke rests an obsidian chalice-shaped gem that glows with a pale, misty silver light. When the wearer speaks, glowing sigils from the Syllable of Becoming race across the leather and bronze, and a faint, ethereal mist—carrying the silhouette of a silver wolf—clings to the arms like a living shroud.

Multiple Passives Magic

  • The Unspoken Ledger: The gauntlets automatically absorb and record any magical or historical data the wearer touches or sees. This knowledge is protected and can only be accessed by the wearer’s Mind’s Eye.
  • Ethereal Shroud: The essence of Minion 47 provides a permanent +2 bonus to AC (included in stats) and makes the wearer’s arms and hands semi-incorporeal, allowing them to reach through solid machinery without triggering traps or heat sensors.
  • Harmonic Equilibrium: The bracers regulate the wearer’s nervous system, granting immunity to “Dream-shock” and providing a +3 bonus to Concentration checks while near active ley-lines.
  • Presence of the Absence: Incidental sounds made by the wearer are muted by 75%, and their biological scent is replaced by the smell of old parchment and rain, making them untrackable by non-magical scent.

Multiple Active Magics

  • The Syllabic Pack (2 Actions): The wearer speaks the morphing syllable, fracturing their own aura into four ethereal silver wolves (clones of Minion 47). These minions act on the wearer’s turn to distract, defend, or track targets for 1 hour.
  • Resonant Re-Syntax (Action): The wearer touches a target (creature or machine) and forces a minor physiological or mechanical adaptation. This can disable a steam-valve, blind an organic foe, or grant an ally gills for 10 minutes.
  • Wolf-Step Blink (Reaction): When targeted by an attack, the wearer turns into a burst of misty silver light and teleports 30 feet to an unoccupied space. This “Misty Escape” can be used 3 times per day.
  • Audit of the Twin Currents (1/Day): The wearer slams their palms together, releasing a massive hydro-sonic pulse. All hidden creatures within 100 feet are revealed, and all magical ley-defenses in the area are temporarily suppressed (unattuned) for 1 minute.

Specific Slot

Worn Item (Arms) (Note: Per the Merged Item Rule, this object occupies only the Arm slot, despite physically covering the forearms, shoulders, and upper back.)

Targeted Integrity and Restoration of the Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402

In the tactical landscape of Saṃsāra, the Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402 is a formidable target. To disable the magical functions of this Tier 4 artifact through a targeted strike, an attacker must overcome an elevated Armor Check. This AC is calculated as the wearer’s base AC plus 4 (the item’s Tier level), plus the result of the wearer’s 4d10 Tier dice roll. If the artifact has been augmented with its own AC bonus, that value is also added to the threshold. A successful hit that meets or exceeds this number immediately deactivates (unattunes) the gauntlets, rendering its active and passive magics dormant.

The item possesses Item Hit Points equal to the avatar’s maximum hit points plus 40 (4×10 resilience). If targeted damage reduces the artifact to 50% of its total HP or lower, the item enters a Broken state. While broken, the “Ethereal Shroud” dissipates, the “Unspoken Ledger” becomes unreadable, and the “Syllabic Pack” cannot be summoned. If the item reaches zero hit points, it is destroyed and reverts to its base component parts, though the Essence of Whisperwind may dissipate entirely if the destruction is violent.

Repairing a Tier 4 object of such varied composition requires a multidisciplinary approach:

  • Somatic Patching: To fix the bark-parchment plates, the crafter must use Star-Infused Ink to redraw the damaged runes while reciting the Syllable of Becoming to ensure the pages remain metamorphic.
  • Structural Resealing: The river-bronze scales and silk-steel mesh require a Grandmaster’s Steam Loom and Alchemical Solder to re-knit the physical housing without disrupting the ley-quartz filaments inside.
  • Ethereal Anchoring: If the obsidian chalice-gem is cracked, it must be bathed in a mixture of Dreamwater and Shadow-Lichen Resin for a full lunar cycle to invite the spirit of the silver wolf back into the physical anchor.
  • The Re-attunement Audit: Once the physical HP is restored above the 50% threshold, the crafter must perform a “Silent Audit” of the tome’s recorded data to ensure no corruption has infected the Essence.

Only after these repairs are finalized can the avatar perform a 10-minute ritual attunement to re-awaken the Covenant’s “Language of Evolution.”

Acquisition and Exchange of the Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402

In the complex society of Saṃsāra, the Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402 is not merely an object of defense, but a high-tier archival tool. Obtaining such a device involves navigating the intersection of ancient druidic traditions, linguistic monasteries, and the cutting edge of Amratian magitech.

Methods of Acquisition

  • The Ritual of Synthesis: Most commonly, a Tier 4 character must possess the four original components and seek out a Master of Arcane Semantics in the Serpent’s Spine mountains. The character must roleplay the “Binding of the Four Truths,” a downtime process that requires the user to explain how they harmonized the ethereal spirit with the physical syntax of the tome and bracers.
  • Archivist’s Inheritance: A character may obtain the Covenant as a quest reward from a secret order like the Order of the Faded Whisper. This usually requires a high amount of Renown Points (minimum 400) to prove the character is a worthy guardian of the “Unspoken Ledger.”
  • Sanctuary Salvage: In “Deathly Areas” where ancient libraries have collapsed into temporal rifts, a broken version of this item may be found. Because the item is Tier 4, simply touching it without being of the appropriate Tier will cause immediate physical pain and health loss (minutes based on 2d4, and HP loss based on the lower die +3).

Specialized Establishments and Transaction Styles

Trading an item that holds the power of “Bio-Linguistic Engineering” is a highly regulated and often secretive process.

1. The Scriptorium of the High Spires (Elite Urban Districts) Located in the floating districts of megacities, these shops cater to scholars, high-tier diplomats, and royal advisors. They specialize in “Knowledge Preservation” gear.

  • Trade Style: Transactions are conducted with a formal Mind’s Eye audit. The proprietor will verify the item’s recorded history to ensure it hasn’t been used to store “Corruptive Knowledge.”
  • Buying/Selling: Only those with a “Scholar” or “Archivist” title may purchase the item here. They prefer payment in Platinum or Rhodium to avoid the weight of lower currencies.
  • Estimated Cost: 22,000 to 30,000 Gold Coins (expressed as 2,200–3,000 Platinum).

2. The Whispering Oak Exchange (Secluded Forest Enclaves) These are not traditional shops but communal trading hubs found in druidic groves. They deal in “Nature-Derived” artifacts.

  • Trade Style: Barter is the primary method. The “Shopkeeper” is often a sentient beast or an elderly druid who values “Sacred Services” over currency.
  • Buying/Selling: To buy the item, one might have to provide a “Willing Offering” of rare reagents like Essence of Whisperwind or a Tier 4 Magic Crystal. Selling here often results in a lower gold value but a significant gain in local Renown.
  • Estimated Cost: 18,000 Gold Coins + A Legendary Service (e.g., clearing a corrupted ley-node).

3. The Gear-Vault of the Black Current (Underwater/Cave Megacities) For the scoundrel or the exiled, the Shadow Markets in the cavern cities provide a place to sell the Covenant without a background check by the World Bank.

  • Trade Style: “Buyer Beware.” The item may be a Bound Item tethered to a deceased nation, making it dissolve if taken too far from its original territory.
  • Buying/Selling: These vendors buy for “scrap value” if the item is broken, usually around 25% of market value. They sell at high premiums (50% markup) for those desperate for the “Ethereal Shroud” ability.
  • Estimated Cost: 35,000 to 45,000 Gold Coins (often requiring untraceable Non-Metal Coinage).

Valuation and Economic Reality

The cost of the Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402 is highly variable based on its “recorded content.” A version that has absorbed the lost dialects of a fallen civilization is priceless to a historian, while one used by a mercenary to record tactical weaknesses of the Monarchy’s military is considered a “Dangerous Asset” and may be confiscated by the Royal Court if discovered.

Tactical Semantics: The Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402 in the Field

In the high-magic industrial world of Saṃsāra, the Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402 is wielded not as a simple weapon, but as a bridge between the physical and the ethereal. Roleplaying with this Tier 4 artifact involves a constant interplay between the silence of ancient parchment and the ferocity of the spectral silver wolf.

  • Dense Jungles and High-Altitude Peaks
    • Offense: The wearer uses Acoustic Animal Handling to coordinate with local wildlife. You roleplay the avatar making sharp, clicking sounds with their throat, directing the jungle’s predators to flush out enemies. Using Resonant Re-Syntax, the avatar touches an ancient tree or cliffside, forcing a “structural adaptation” that creates a sudden landslide or falling vine trap to crush unsuspecting foes.
    • Defense: In these treacherous heights, Harmonic Equilibrium is your primary shield. You roleplay the river-bronze scales warming against your skin as they equalize your internal pressure, preventing altitude sickness. If an ambush occurs, the Ethereal Shroud allows you to move through dense undergrowth as if it were air, your limbs turning to mist as you slip through thorns and solid trunks without a scratch.
  • Urban Megacities and Industrial Hubs
    • Offense: In a city of millions, the Syllabic Pack becomes a force of invisible chaos. You roleplay the avatar whispering the mutating syllable into the smog, causing four silver wolves to manifest from the shadows. These minions are used to simultaneously sabotage steam-valves in different sectors, creating an urban distraction while you infiltrate a secure vault.
    • Defense: The Presence of the Absence passive allows the wearer to walk the busiest streets completely ignored. You roleplay the “forgotten guest” dynamic—guards look right through you as the smell of rain and parchment masks your biological trail. If cornered in a steam-filled alley, the Wolf-Step Blink reaction is used to vanish in a cloud of misty light, appearing on a high skyscraper ledge before the pursuers can draw their weapons.
  • Deathly Areas and Collapsed Ley-Nodes
    • Offense: When facing “Nearly Impossible” threats in unstable rifts, the avatar uses the Audit of the Twin Currents. You roleplay the avatar slamming their bronze-scaled palms together, sending a hydro-sonic shockwave that suppresses the magical defenses of everyone in the area. With the rift-creatures’ magic deactivated, the Unspoken Ledger begins absorbing their history, identifying their ancient linguistic weaknesses for your party to exploit.
    • Defense: In “Deathly Areas” where AC is zero, the wearer relies on the Ethereal Shroud and Wolf-Step Blink. You roleplay the avatar’s arms becoming entirely semi-incorporeal, reaching into the very heart of the ley-rift to stabilize it. Every time a rift-beast strikes, you use a reaction to blink out of reality, leaving only a fading silver mist behind as the attack passes through empty space.
  • Underwater Habitats and Sunken Ruins
    • Offense: Beneath the waves, the Universal Audit provides a sonar-like advantage. You roleplay the Mind’s Eye projecting an amber grid over the dark water, revealing the weak points in a rival faction’s submarine or habitat hull. Using Resonant Re-Syntax, you touch the water itself to create a localized current surge that slams enemies against the seafloor.
    • Defense: The Ethereal Shroud is invaluable in the crushing depths. You roleplay the avatar’s hands reaching through solid pressure-locks to deactivate traps without opening the door. The Harmonic Equilibrium prevents the “Dream-shock” often associated with ancient sunken relics, keeping your mind steady as you record the ruins’ lost knowledge into the Unspoken Ledger.
  • Diplomatic Courts and Royal Spires
    • Offense: During high-stakes negotiations, the Master of Arcane Semantics skill is used to “audit” the truth of spoken words. You roleplay the avatar watching the sigils on their gauntlets glow when a diplomat lies, recording the deception directly into the tome-plates. You can then use Resonant Re-Syntax to “correct” a diplomat’s voice, making them unable to speak anything but the truth for ten minutes.
    • Defense: The Silent Composure of the locket ensures the wearer is never the center of attention, even in a throne room. You roleplay the avatar standing perfectly still, the leather yoke and bark-parchment absorbing the light and noise of the court. Should an assassin strike, the Wolf-Step Blink ensures you are never where the blade lands, allowing you to reposition behind the throne in a single heartbeat of silver mist.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight: As the gauntlets engage, your vision undergoes a “Re-typesetting.” The world briefly shatters into glowing phonemes before reforming with an amber geometric overlay. You see the ley-currents in the air as flowing silver threads. The river-bronze scales on your arms begin to ripple like water, and the bark-parchment plates glow with the blue light of active runes.
  • Sound: You hear a layered, harmonic “Hush” that drowns out ambient noise. This is followed by a haunting, ethereal howl that resonates not in your ears, but directly in your marrow. The clacking of the bronze scales sounds like rhythmic river stones being turned by a swift current.
  • Touch: A sensation of “Typing on the Bones” ripples from your fingertips to your shoulders. Your arms feel suddenly weightless and slightly numb, as if they are partially composed of cold mist. You feel a grounding warmth at your chest where the obsidian gem rests, pulsing in sync with your heartbeat.
  • Smell and Taste: The air suddenly smells of rain-drenched earth and old, expensive parchment. On your tongue, you perceive the metallic, cooling tang of “chewing moonlight,” a byproduct of the linguistic mutation taking hold.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Visual: The avatar’s arms appear to blur and expand, surrounded by a swirling shroud of silver mist. Glowing sigils race across the bronze and leather, casting dancing shadows on the ground. For a heartbeat, the silhouette of a massive silver wolf can be seen standing behind the avatar, its paws overlapping their shoulders.
  • Auditory: Witnesses hear a single, complex syllable that seems to change its meaning as it echoes. This is accompanied by a low-frequency hum that makes glass vibrate and a rhythmic “chime” of metal on silk.
  • Environmental: The temperature in a 10-foot radius drops noticeably. Nearby animals go silent and bow their heads, and small gusts of wind spiral upward from the avatar’s feet, carrying the scent of a deep forest.

Extra-Sensory Perceptions (Mind’s Eye)

  • Linguistic Intuition: You no longer “read” runes; you feel their intent. The “Language of Evolution” manifests as a psychic map, showing you how any object or creature can be edited or re-synthesized.
  • Spectral Resonance: You sense the “Density of Reality.” You can feel which parts of a wall or machine are “hollow” enough for your ethereal hands to pass through.
  • Chronometric Clarity: A sensation of being a “Living Manuscript.” You perceive your own life as a series of editable sentences, granting you the absolute confidence to rewrite your immediate physical reactions to danger.

Positives

  • Total Tactical Awareness: The combination of ley-sensing and animal empathy provides a 360-degree mental map of all biological and magical threats.
  • Environmental Dominance: The “Harmonic Equilibrium” removes the stress of extreme environments, allowing for perfect focus where others would succumb to fatigue or pressure.
  • Incorporeal Precision: The ability to reach through solid matter allows for “impossible” sabotage or theft without damaging the exterior of a target.

Negatives

  • Somatic Feedback: The sensation of your bones being “edited” can be disorienting, causing a minor dizzy spell if the activation is sudden.
  • Aura Glare: Your magical signature becomes so bright to those with “Aura Sight” that you become a primary target for energy-draining entities.
  • Linguistic Displacement: For several minutes after activation, you may find it difficult to speak in common tongues, as your mind is still processing the complex syntax of the First Language.

The Rite of Somatic Re-Syntax: Forging the Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402

Items Merged

Additional Materials Needed

  • 1 Pint of Ethereal Essence: To stabilize the transition of Minion 47 from a goblet-tether to a wearable harness.
  • 4 Tier 4 Magic Crystals: To serve as the high-output power source for the Tier 4 “Covenant” resonance.
  • 3 Vials of Eldritch Ink: For re-typesetting the tome pages onto the articulated bark-parchment plates.
  • Binding Thread of Serenity (4 Skeins): To stitch the leather yoke and silk-steel mesh into a unified garment.
  • Desert Glass Resin: To seal the quartz filaments and prevent temporal shearing during the merge.

Tools Required

  • Grandmaster’s Steam Loom: To weave the bronze scales and silk-steel into the shoulder-to-fingertip gauntlet form.
  • Arcane Anvil: For shaping the river-bronze and anchoring the obsidian chalice-gem.
  • Precision Etcher with Glyph Focus Lens: For transferring the high-tier “Becoming” sigils onto the armor plates.
  • Ley-Alignment Chamber: To ensure the quartz filaments are tuned to the local ley-line hum during the binding.
  • Enchanting Quill: For the final “Life-Syntax” inscriptions on the inner leather lining.

Skill Requirements

  • Elemental Smithing (Tier 4): Mastery over obsidian and river-bronze integration.
  • Arcana & Runesmithing (Tier 4): Expertise in linguistic metamorphosis and high-tier ley-calibration.
  • Master of Arcane Semantics (Adept): To pronounce the shifting syllable correctly during the bonding phase.
  • Leatherworking (Advanced): To shape the beast-hide yoke into a comfortable, weight-distributing anchor.

Crafting Steps

  1. Dismantling the Vessels: Carefully extract the quartz filaments from the bracers and the obsidian gem from the chalice. Submerge these in Ethereal Essence to maintain their “Living” resonance while the physical frames are reforged.
  2. The Plate-Tome Weaving: Using the Steam Loom, take the bark-parchment from the Whisperwind Tome and reinforce it with silk-steel. Shape these into articulated plates that will serve as the forearm protection for the gauntlets.
  3. The Bronze-Scale Integration: Reforge the river-bronze scales on the Arcane Anvil, extending the mesh to cover the entire arm. Inlay the quartz filaments along the “veins” of the gauntlets, ensuring they spiral in the “Twin Currents” formation.
  4. The Obsidian Anchoring: Mount the obsidian chalice-gem into the center of the beast-hide leather yoke. This will serve as the “heart” of the Covenant, where the spirit of Minion 47 will be relocated.
  5. The Syllabic Inscription: Using Eldritch Ink and the Precision Etcher, scribe the evolving sigils of the Syllable of Becoming across the leather and bronze. The runes must flow from the chest-gem down to the fingertips in a continuous “Sentence of Form.”
  6. The Ethereal Transfer: Pour the amalgam of Ethereal Essence and star-infused ink over the central gem. While the mixture is wet, the crafter must speak the Syllable of Becoming 9194 in a single, unwavering breath to pull the silver wolf spirit into the harness.
  7. The Final Audit: Place the Tier 4 Magic Crystals into the gauntlet cuffs. Activate the Ley-Alignment Chamber. The crafter must “Audit” the device, ensuring the Tome’s knowledge, the Bracers’ precision, and the Wolf’s ferocity are in perfect grammatical balance.
  8. The Quenching of Souls: Once the aquamarine and silver light stabilizes, quench the entire artifact in Sacred Oasis Water. The gauntlets will contract and hum, signifying that the Covenant of the Faded Lexicon 402 is now a single, physical soul-bound object.

TREATY OF FADED WORD-BOX 402

(Translator’s Note: The following text was pulled from the clay-skins found in the deep wet-caves of the Serpent-Spine. The language is an old-dead tongue, mixing the grammar of tree-roots with the counting-math of the river-people. Many words are [broken/lost/soup]. We translate as best the eyes can see.)

In the long-ago-time, when the moon was still learning to walk the sky-circle, there was a man of no-talking. The scrolls call him Xen-Mute, or perhaps Xen-Who-Eats-Quiet. He was a keeper of the [untranslatable: a building where memory is trapped in dead wood; library?]. In this time, the world was too loud. The Loud-Tyrants of the Steam-Breath (automatons?) walked the valleys, crushing the soft green with iron feet. They did not know the old grammar. They spoke only in smoke and crushing.

Xen-Mute looked upon the crushing and felt a great sorrow in his thinking-water (brain?). He said to the wind with no voice, “How does the meat-body stop the iron-body, when the iron-body cannot read the earth?” The wind, which was an ancient ghost of a snake, whispered back into his eye. It told him to build a Treaty. A Covenant. A [Word-Armor] that would force the Loud-Tyrants to read the quiet.

First, Xen-Mute walked to the deep-water-woods to find the Skin of the Wind. He found the Whispering Oak, a tree older than dirt. He begged the tree, “Give me your skin, so I may write the memory of the air.” The tree wept sap of starlight and gave its bark. Xen-Mute stitched the bark into plates. This was the Book of Wind, but he did not hold it in his hands. He said, “Hands are for building, not holding memory.” So, he folded the tree-skin onto his arm-meat, tying it with the hair of a dead beast who had surrendered its ghost politely.

But the tree-skin was empty. It was hungry for ink, but regular ink is deaf. Xen-Mute needed the ink of the fallen sky. He climbed the Mountain of Spine-Serpent, where the stars sometimes fall down because they are tired. He collected the black blood of the star. But when he tried to write, his hands shook with the coldness of the world.

He said, “My hands are too loud. They tremble like sick birds. I need the balance of the wet and the dry.”

So he walked to the place where the Great River bites the Serene Dust. Here, the ghost of an old metal-bender had left the Arm-Snakes of River-Bronze and Silk-Steel (the Twin Currents). Xen-Mute took the arm-scales and placed them over his tree-skin sleeves. The bronze scales clicked like river stones. The quartz strings inside them drank the hum of the earth. Suddenly, his hands stopped trembling. The wet water and the dry sand agreed to hold hands on his forearms. His fingers became sharp like math. He could feel the magic-blood (ley-lines) moving under the dirt.

But still, the Word-Armor was asleep. It was just quiet wood and balanced metal. It had no teeth to bite the Loud-Tyrants.

Xen-Mute went into the dark places under the earth to find a tooth. He found a black drinking cup made of [volcano-glass]. Inside the cup was a trapped silver dog made of fog. The scrolls call it the Servant-Beast Forty-Seven. Xen-Mute looked at the cup and said with his mind, “Silver dog of fog, do not live in the cup. Live in my chest. Be the ghost of my armor.”

He melted the black cup into a dark heart-stone and shoved it into a leather yoke around his neck. The silver fog-dog howled. It crawled out of the cup and wrapped its ghost-fur around Xen-Mute’s shoulders. Now, his arms were wrapped in tree-skin, balanced by river-bronze, and guarded by the ghost of a silver wolf. When he walked, his feet made no sound. He smelled like rain and old paper. He was halfway to becoming a ghost.

But the Loud-Tyrants of Steam-Breath were coming. He could hear their iron boots chewing the forest. Xen-Mute knew that a ghost cannot break iron unless the ghost knows the true name of the iron. He needed the Word. Not a normal word, but the Un-Word. The Syllable that Changes the Meat and the Metal.

(The clay tablet is cracked here. Blood is dried in the cracks. The translation becomes strange.)

Xen-Mute opened his mouth. He did not speak a word of trade or a word of love. He spoke a sound that was a circle. He spoke the Becoming-Sound. The sound started as a vowel and ended as a [blue flash of light].

When the sound hit his teeth, the magic broke. The silver wolf-ghost, the tree-skin book, the river-bronze scales, and the star-ink all melted into one concept. The star-ink did not wait for a pen. It leaked from his pores and wrote the Becoming-Sound across the river-bronze. Glowing letters of blue and amber crawled up his arms like glowing ants. The Word-Armor was no longer pieces. It was the Treaty of the Faded Word-Box Number Four-Hundred-And-Two.

The Loud-Tyrants burst through the trees. They were tall as mountains, coughing hot smoke. They pointed their fire-tubes at Xen-Mute.

Xen-Mute did not run. He was the Archive now. He snapped his arms together. The river-bronze made a sound like a drowning bell. A giant wave of [water-sound] exploded from his chest-gem. The Loud-Tyrants froze. Their magic-fires went out because the water-sound told their fires that they were ice.

Then, Xen-Mute spoke the Becoming-Sound again, but backwards. The ghost of the silver wolf jumped out of his shoulders, but it was not one wolf—it was four wolves made of syntax and mist. The wolves ran into the metal bodies of the Loud-Tyrants. They did not bite the iron; they bit the math inside the iron. They ate the logic of the machines.

A Loud-Tyrant swung a massive fist to crush Xen-Mute. But Xen-Mute did not block. The letters on his arms glowed, and his body turned into silver mist. He vanished, leaving only the smell of old books in the air, and reappeared standing on the giant’s shoulder.

Xen-Mute pushed his hands into the iron head of the Loud-Tyrant. His arms were ethereal. They passed through the metal like hands reaching into bathwater. He touched the thinking-gears of the machine. He used the Becoming-Sound to rewrite the machine’s body-grammar. He changed the word “Kill” into the word “Rust.” He changed the word “Stand” into the word “Water.”

Instantly, the giant Loud-Tyrant melted into a puddle of harmless rain and soft copper. The other Tyrants saw this and their logic-engines broke from fear. They fell to their knees and became silent statues.

Xen-Mute stood in the quiet forest. His arms were covered in the glowing ink of the world’s secrets. He did not write in a book anymore, because he was the book. Every time he touched a leaf, the history of the leaf was written into his mind. Every time he looked at a rock, the rock’s memory crawled into the bronze scales on his arms.

He walked into the deep fog of the Serpent-Spine and never came back to the loud cities. It is written that if you are very quiet in the deep woods, you will not see a man, but you will smell old parchment and feel the breath of a silver wolf on your neck. You will know that the Archive is walking near, auditing the forest, turning the loud noises back into quiet letters.

Moral of the Story: Do not yell at the world with a mouth of iron, for the man who wears the silent book on his arms and the ghost-dog on his chest can reach through your hardness and rewrite your bones into rain. Only the quiet ink survives the rust of time.
