Upon the party’s approach to express interest in “The Catapult of Cragstone Keep” quest, they’re greeted by the guild clerk, Benedict, a wiry man with spectacles perched on the bridge of his nose and ink-stained fingers.
Registering for the Quest: Benedict shuffles through a pile of parchments, pulling out the relevant registration form for the quest. He has each party member sign their name and note down any expertise they have related to siege weaponry or engineering. With meticulous care, he marks the quest as “Engaged” on the main board.
Warnings Given:
- “Cragstone Keep is located at a treacherous height. The ascent is not for the faint-hearted. Make sure you’re equipped for mountain climbing.”
- “The local mountain griffins have been known to be territorial, especially during this season. It’s wise to be cautious and avoid any nesting areas.”
- “While the catapult is your main concern, remember that Cragstone is an active military post. Always follow the protocols of the keep.”
Preparation Needed:
- “You’d do well to bring along any tools or equipment related to machinery and engineering. The keep will provide some basic tools, but specialized equipment might be on you.”
- “The weather up at Cragstone can be unpredictable. Pack warm clothing and waterproof gear.”

Distance and Duration:
- “The journey to Cragstone Keep will take roughly two days on horseback. The path becomes steeper and narrower as you ascend, so account for a slower pace as you get closer.”
- “Depending on the extent of the repairs and calibration needed for the catapult, the task itself might take anywhere from a day to three.”
Additional Information:
- “Sir Percival is your main point of contact at Cragstone. He’s a bit stern but has a wealth of knowledge about the keep’s defenses.”
- “While you’re at Cragstone, you might want to check out the Eagle’s Perch Tavern. It’s where off-duty soldiers and visiting merchants gather. A good place to pick up local news or even some extra work.”
- “Lastly, remember that Cragstone Keep is of strategic importance to the region. Your efforts there not only earn you gold but also the gratitude of the realm.”
With that, Benedict stamps the party’s registration, hands them a copy, and wishes them luck, reminding them of the significance of their task and the honor of being chosen to uphold the defense of the land.
Excerpt from: Chapter XVII: The Ballista of Brindlestone Bastion
In ages long gone, when knights rode and banners furl’d, within Brindlestone’s mighty walls, a tale unfurl’d. A ballista, mighty in range and power, atop the bastion did it tower, yet misaligned it became, in a tempestuous hour.
At dawn’s first light, Sir Cedric of Clearbrook, and Lady Gwendolen, with mechanic’s look, approached the bastion, the winds cruelly shook. For the ballista, grand in design, with every release, its aim did decline, putting at risk the very frontline.
“Behold!” cried Lady Gwendolen, her gaze keen and sharp, “The chains and the gears, torn apart!” Sir Cedric, his face stern and smart, said, “We must begin, ere the next war does start.”
Yet, as they toiled, perils began to amass, for the shadows of old, from dungeons deep, were roused by the clash. Spectral warriors, with ethereal grasp, sought to thwart and to unclasp the duo’s intent, in darkness to enwrap.
Lady Gwendolen, with knowledge vast, chanted runes to hold the spirits fast, while Sir Cedric, to the ballista, held fast, aligning its aim, against the ghostly harass.
Amidst the spectral siege and the chilling blight, the ballista’s aim was set right. And with a shot, powerful and bright, the spirits were banished, sent to eternal night.
In Brindlestone’s history, and songs of elation, is remembered the tale, of the ballista’s salvation. Sir Cedric and Lady Gwendolen, with determination, had saved the day, earning the realm’s admiration.

Hey there, Super GM! Gear up for a historical dive into Brindlestone Bastion. This siege-centered quest is loaded with machinery, magic, and mayhem. Let’s ensure your players get the medieval experience of a lifetime! Ready to launch? Here’s your guide!
- Historical Context: Start by giving your players a feel of Brindlestone Bastion’s history. Paint a picture of its past battles, the importance of the ballista, and the weight of their task.
- Initial Inspection: Once they approach the ballista, drop hints about its disarray: twisted ropes, misaligned gears, and maybe even old repair attempts. Let them deduce the gravity of the situation.
- Gathering Resources: The ballista won’t fix itself! Have them search the bastion for tools, manuals, or even retired engineers who might guide them. Make it a mini treasure hunt.
- First Attempt and Failures: Don’t make it easy! Their initial repair attempts should face challenges: perhaps the mechanism is more complex than it looks, or parts are missing altogether.
- Enter the Supernatural: As they work, the spectral disturbances begin. Use auditory clues first—distant battle drums, ethereal whispers, the clash of phantom swords.
- The Spectral Siege: Ghostly warriors begin their assault! Here’s the combat element of the quest. Depending on your party’s strengths, you can make this as straightforward or as tactical as you like.
- Deciphering the Runes: As the battle rages, introduce the protective runes. Perhaps there’s a faded mural or an ancient scroll that hints at their power. Let the magic users have their moment of glory.
- The Final Repair: With the spirits held at bay, the climax approaches. Require skill checks, teamwork, and innovative thinking to align the ballista just right.
- Test and Triumph: Once repaired, let them test the ballista! Describe the mighty release of tension, the soaring projectile, and the collective cheer from the bastion’s inhabitants.
- Rewards and Revelations: Beyond the material rewards, let there be recognition. Perhaps the spirits, once adversaries, salute them in acknowledgment before fading away. Or a statue in their honor is commissioned.
- Teasers and Tidbits: As they depart, hint at other siege weapons scattered across the land, each with its own tale, setting the stage for future quests and adventures.
Alrighty, Story Weaver! Aim high and launch your players into this memorable quest. Trust in your skills and keep the momentum trebucheting forward! (Pun intended!) Best of luck!
