Guild Instructions
- All interested parties must register with Clerk Thistle to lock the contract and ensure exclusive salvage rights.
- Registration requires a physical soul-signature and an audit of all attuned gear to ensure Tier 1 compliance.
- Any secondary relics or temple property recovered must be surrendered to the Harmonium Faith for proper lineage cleansing and taxation.
Money Reward
- 1,000 Silver Pieces upon the successful delivery of the relic to the Guild Hall.
Uncommon Magical Rewards
- One Vial of Sacred Spring Water (for use in minor purification rituals).
- One Sunstone Fragment (emits a steady warmth and dim light).
The Objective
- Locate and retrieve the Chalice of Elemental Purity. This divine vessel was last recorded in a remote mountain shrine dedicated to Akiura. The shrine was recently overrun by a localized plague that has turned the local water supply into a toxic sludge, and the chalice is needed to restore the village’s health.
Difficulties
- The shrine is located in a Normal Area, but the inner sanctum containing the chalice is currently an Unsafe Area, meaning Armor Class is halved.
- The local atmosphere is thick with noxious fumes, requiring constant monitoring of avatar HP.
- High presence of plague-distorted creatures that do not possess memories of past lives and act with feral aggression.
Problems
- The water in the shrine’s central fountain is heavily poisoned; contact with the skin causes immediate HP loss at irregular intervals.
- The chalice itself may be trapped behind a dualistic fire-and-water mechanical lock that has been jammed by mineral buildup.
- Reports indicate a “rule breaker” has been seen near the shrine, possibly using Hand Gestures as a conduit to manipulate the toxic water flow.
Who to Ask for More Information
- High Priestess Kaelith at the local Harmonium Temple.
- Master Alchemist Thorne at the Guild’s Alchemical Wing.
Potential Environments
- Toxic Highland Marshes
- Poisoned Stone Sanctuaries
- Steam-Vent Tunnels
- Moss-Covered Religious Ruins

Registration Process
Upon selecting the quest, the party must present themselves to Clerk Thistle. The registration requires each avatar to place their palm upon the guild’s copper-inlaid stone slab. This “Mind’s Eye” interface records the party’s current health, tier, and soul-resonance, legally binding them to the contract. Once Thistle confirms the party is tier-compliant, the job board entry is marked with a heavy mechanical seal, preventing any other party from attempting the retrieval or interfering with the salvage rights.
Guild Warnings and Preparation
The clerk provides a series of specific warnings regarding the hazardous conditions:
- The Unsafe Perimeter: Thistle emphasizes that the inner sanctum is an Unsafe Area. He warns the party that their armor and shields will be only half as effective as usual, making evasion and clever positioning critical for survival.
- Toxic Exposure: A warning is issued regarding the irregular intervals of health loss caused by the fumes. The clerk notes that touching the liquid in the blighted well will trigger immediate and repeated HP loss until the toxin is removed.
- Preparation Requirements: The clerk explains that the party will need heavy-duty leather gloves to handle the chalice and pressurized air bladders or filter-masks to mitigate the noxious fumes. He also suggests bringing alchemical neutralizing agents to temporarily stabilize the liquid while the chalice is being retrieved.
Distance and Duration
- Distance: The mountain shrine is located approximately 55 miles to the North, situated in the high-altitude marshes of the “Cleansed Peaks.”
- Duration: Travel via a standard steam-powered crawler across the rugged terrain will take roughly 9 to 11 hours. The guild expects a return within four in-world days; after this point, the contract is forfeited and the silver payout is cancelled.
Additional Information
The clerk adds that the Chalice of Elemental Purity is a sentient relic. It emits a harmonious resonance that can be heard when it is filled or struck. He notes that while the chalice can purify liquids, it cannot purify the air of the Unsafe Area around it. He also mentions that the “rule breaker” reported at the site has been seen manipulating the toxic water into physical shapes, suggesting that the very environment may be turned into a weapon against the party.
The Writ of Questing
To ensure the party does not perish before reaching the shrine, Clerk Thistle issues a Writ of Questing.
- Purpose: This is a promissory note that allows the party to visit the Guild Armory or authorized local merchants to obtain mundane gear they currently lack, such as ropes, air bladders, filter-masks, or basic rations.
- Nature of the Note: This is an advance, not a gift. The party is expected to earn the items through successful completion of the quest. The total value of the gear used will be deducted from the 1,000 Silver Piece reward upon their return. If the quest fails, the party remains legally and spiritually in debt to the guild for the cost of the equipment.
Mood setting excerpt from:
Tome Title: The Harmonium of the Binary Flow
Chapter Number: XII
Chapter Title: The Canticle of the Poisoned Well
The waters of life shall turn black as the pit, When the balance of elements fails in the heart, And the fire of the soul shall be guttered and quit, As the dualistic spirits are driven apart.
The breath of the peaks shall be heavy with dread, A sulfurous shroud for the shrine in the mist, Where the living are counted as one with the dead, And the light of the Goddess no longer can ‘sist.
Behold then the vessel of platinum and grace, With the spiral of flame and the ripple of wave, Left alone in the dark of that desolate place, Where the armor of man cannot hope to be brave.
Your shields shall be paper, your mail shall be glass, When the sanctum is entered and safety is gone, For the Unsafe of spirit shall wither like grass, In the shadow that waits for the coming of dawn.
The plague-twisted beast with the mind of a void, Shall hunger for sparks of the memories you keep, While the work of the ancients is slowly destroyed, By the toxins that flow from the mountain so steep.
But the chalice shall sing with a musical tone, To the one who is balanced and steady of hand, Though the rule breaker claims that the well is their own, And the toxic sludge rises to swallow the land.
Guide Manager’s Notes:
This quest is a perfect way to showcase the environmental storytelling and the high-consequence nature of Saṃsāra. You are taking your players from a civilized metropolis into a high-altitude wasteland where the air itself is an enemy. The key here is to keep the pressure on—literally and figuratively. Since there are no short rests, every point of damage from a noxious fume or a plague-beast bite is a permanent tax on their success until they find that chalice. Here is how you run this thrill-ride.
- Step 1: The Tactical Shopping Spree. Start at the Guild with Clerk Thistle. This is where the players have to make their first big decisions. The “Writ of Questing” is on the table, and they need to choose between filter-masks, heavy gloves, or alchemical stabilizers. Make them feel the weight of their debt. Every silver spent now is less profit later, but dying in a toxic marsh is way more expensive.
- Step 2: The Crawler Voyage. The 11-hour ride in the steam-crawler is the perfect time to build the atmosphere. Describe the mechanical groaning of the vehicle as it climbs into the thin, sulfurous air of the Cleansed Peaks. Have them use their Mind’s Eye on the landscape to spot the “bleeding” ley lines that are causing the elemental instability.
- Step 3: The Highland Trek. Once the crawler can go no further, the party has to hike through the toxic marshes. This is where you introduce the irregular HP loss from the fumes. Have them roll their checks to see if their filter-masks hold up. It’s a great way to show that survival in this world is a constant active process.
- Step 4: The Plague-Beast Skirmish. Before they reach the shrine, hit them with a pack of plague-distorted creatures. These things don’t have memories, so they are feral and unpredictable. Remind the players that in this “Normal Area,” their AC is standard, but they need to save their mana boosts for the Unsafe Area ahead.
- Step 5: The Unsafe Threshold. As they enter the moss-covered religious ruins, drop the hammer: AC is now halved. The players should feel a physical shift in the stakes. Every movement now has to be calculated because even a minor scratch from a distorted acolyte could be devastating.
- Step 6: The Poisoned Fountain Room. The party reaches the central chamber where the sludge is bubbling. The air is so thick here that visibility is low. They can see the Chalice of Elemental Purity at the bottom of the fountain, but the water is a high-tier toxin. If they touch it without the proper gear or alchemical prep, they start the 2d4 damage intervals immediately.
- Step 7: The Mechanical Lock Puzzle. The chalice is anchored by a dualistic fire-and-water mechanism. The players have to balance the heat of a steam-vent against the flow of the toxic water to release the clamps. This is where the Master Alchemist’s advice from the guild comes in handy—if they listened.
- Step 8: The Rule Breaker’s Grand Entrance. Just as they are about to grab the chalice, the rule breaker appears. They don’t use a conduit; they use hand gestures to pull the toxic sludge out of the fountain and shape it into a serpent. This shows the party a completely different side of magic and forces them to think about how to disrupt a caster who doesn’t have an item to target.
- Step 9: The First Purification. Once the party gets the chalice, they have to use it. Pouring the toxic sludge into the platinum vessel causes the molecular structure to rewrite with a soft, musical hum. The liquid turns to pure elemental water. This is the “Aha!” moment where they realize they have a weapon against the environmental toxins.
- Step 10: The Desperate Withdrawal. The rule breaker isn’t happy about losing their “art.” The party has to escape the ruins while the rule breaker causes the steam-vents to erupt. The character carrying the chalice has to keep it steady while the others provide cover. Since they are still in an Unsafe Area with halved AC, this is a frantic dash.
- Step 11: The Triumphant Return. Getting back to the steam-crawler feels like a massive victory. They can use the purified water from the chalice to heal minor wounds (if you’re feeling generous) or just to stay hydrated in the noxious peaks.
- Step 12: Payout and Restoration. Back at the Guild, Clerk Thistle audits the chalice’s resonance. Once confirmed, the 1,000 Silver is paid out—minus the Writ of Questing expenses. The party leaves with a Sunstone fragment and the knowledge that they’ve saved a village from a divine-level plague.
