Men called him Eshal’ron-of-No-Tribe, but the hawks called him Brother, and the wind called him Thief, for he stole its breath and gave nothing back.
Eshal’ron carried messages between the stone cities that hung like nests on the edges of the world. No cliff was too high, no chasm too hungry. He ran with the bands of the Leaping Verse wrapped tight around his legs, crimson words that sang numbers into his bones, and every step was a syllable spoken to the sky.
Yet one mountain stood against him. Men named it Misnumbered Height, for its peak changed its count each dawn. Warriors climbed and fell. Priests climbed and were unmade. Scribes climbed and forgot how to read their own names. The mountain laughed with a voice of falling stones.
Eshal’ron stood at its foot and felt the bands grow cold. For the first time his legs doubted. He looked up and saw no path, only hunger.
That night the Watchful One came down from the high places. It had the body of a lion and the eyes of every hawk that ever flew. It carried in its mouth a tube of star-metal and crystal, the Predator’s Gaze, still warm from the forge of the First Hunter.
“Take this,” said the Watchful One in a voice like wind over feathers. “With it you will see the lie themountain wears. But sight is a heavy debt, and the wind does not forgive thieves.”
Eshal’ron took the gaze and looked. He saw the mountain’s true skin: false ledges that opened like mouths, winds that lied about direction, stones that moved when no one watched. He saw a path of light made of hawk-wing shadows and numbered breaths.
But the path was longer than any man could run before his heart burst.
So Eshal’ron did a thing not done before or since. He unwrapped the crimson bands from his legs and laid them upon the spyglass. He spoke the seventy-two names backwards and forwards at the same time. He cut his palm at the apex of a leap and let the blood fall into the lens while still in the air. The blood did not fall. It wrote itself into the metal and the cloth at once.
The mountain screamed. The bands crawled up the spyglass like living serpents and sank into the metal. The lenses flashed crimson. The sky itself held its breath.
When Eshal’ron landed, the spyglass was no longer metal or cloth but one thing, warm as flesh, heavy as guilt. He raised it to his eye and the path of light shortened to seven leaps. He counted them in his heart: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. On the seventh leap he did not come down.
Some say he stands now on the true peak that has no name, still looking farther. Some say the mountain swallowed him and now wears his face when it lies to climbers.
