Abyssal Queendom of Lumaris

Lore and History

In the earliest centuries after the arrival of souls on Saṃsāra, the vast and lightless depths of the oceans were considered uninhabitable hellscapes, home only to pressure-spawned monstrosities and crushing despair. This perception changed with the arrival of Scylla, a soul who retained powerful memories of a life lived as a sorceress-queen in a world of eternal night and water. She saw not a wasteland, but a sanctuary—a realm whose very hostility could be turned into the ultimate defense.

In the deepest ocean basin, a place of immense geothermal activity and strange magical currents, Scylla laid the foundation of her nation. She plunged into the Scylla Deeps, a trench that would later bear her name, and confronted the primordial leviathans that dwelled there. Through a combination of overwhelming power and cunning insight into their nature, she subdued them, binding the greatest of the krakens and abyssal dragons into service. Using their strength and her own formidable magic, she raised the capital city of Noctilume around a colossal, naturally bioluminescent crystal formation she called the Heart of Lumaris. This became the perpetual light source and magical power core for her burgeoning civilization.

For over three thousand years, the Abyssal Queendom of Lumaris has grown in isolation. The Queens of the Scylla dynasty, who inherit power through a direct matrilineal line, have perfected the arts of abjuration to withstand the impossible pressure and transmutation to forge materials in the heat of hydrothermal vents. The royal line is known for two distinct, inherited traits: an uncanny, almost precognitive ability to perceive the emotional and political undercurrents of their court and of rival nations, and a strategic genius for using misdirection, patience, and sudden, decisive strikes to achieve their aims, much like the anglerfish uses its lure in the dark.

Lumaris society is built upon a single, unshakable truth: the abyss provides, and the abyss protects. The monarchy owns all land, all resources, and all infrastructure. The citizens, in turn, pay taxes in the form of rent for their homes, their businesses, and for the very air they breathe and the magical shield that keeps the ocean from crushing them. This absolute ownership is not seen as tyranny, but as the Queen’s sacred burden.

Citizen Perspective and Culture

The people of Lumaris, known as Lumarans, possess a deep and abiding pride in their nation and their Queen. They see themselves as the true survivors of Saṃsāra, thriving in an environment that would instantly kill any unprepared surface dweller. This shared struggle has forged a powerful communal identity rooted in resilience, discipline, and mutual dependence. The constant hum of the city-wide pressure shields is a comforting sound, a reminder of the Crown’s protection.

For most Lumarans, the monarchy’s total ownership is a simple fact of life, the price for security in a world of leviathans. The taxes they pay are visibly reinvested into public works: the maintenance of the life-giving magical fields, the expansion of the hydro-tube transit network, the funding of the formidable Abyssal Guard, and the cultivation of vast underwater farms.

They tend to view the “Sun-Kissed” peoples of the surface islands with a mixture of pity and contempt, seeing them as fragile, flighty beings who have never known true pressure or true darkness. Life in Lumaris is serious and deliberate. Art forms often involve intricate light-shows using bioluminescent flora, and music is composed of deep, resonant tones that travel well through water. Fashion and gear are elaborate and often incorporate bioluminescent patterns, hardened shells, and streamlined designs practical for aquatic movement.

However, a quiet melancholy known as “depth-lure” can affect those souls who remember lives spent under an open sky. For them, the eternal, managed twilight of the abyssal cities can feel confining. While open dissent is rare—it is treated as a dangerous threat to the entire habitat—some citizens quietly chafe under the absolute control and lack of personal ownership, seeking opportunity in the black markets or the dangerous, uncharted ruins on the nation’s periphery.

The National Environment

The Queendom of Lumaris occupies the Lumaris Basin, an abyssal plain thousands of meters below the surface, ringed by volcanic mountain ranges and deep-sea trenches. The nation is a complex tapestry of meticulously managed habitats.

The capital, Noctilume, is a sprawling metropolis of millions, built in concentric circles around the glowing Heart of Lumaris. Its towers are carved from black obsidian forged in hydrothermal vents and reinforced with the bones of ancient leviathans. It is a city of perpetual, soft light, where tamed plesiosaurs serve as mounts and high-pressure water tubes shuttle citizens between districts.

The nation contains a mandated diversity of environments. There are dozens of natural habitat preserves, from the Cinder-Vent Fields, where volcanic heat powers massive forges, to the tranquil, magically illuminated Pearlgrass Meadows that serve as vital breeding grounds for domesticated fish. The Sunken Forest of Y’ha-nthlei consists of miles of petrified, magically infused trees that are carefully harvested for rare alchemical reagents.

Constructed habitats are numerous. The city of Coralgard is a breathtaking series of communities built into a magically grown coral reef the size of a surface mountain. The military bastion of Fortress Deeps-End is a submerged castle of immense scale, guarding the only safe passage into the basin from a neighboring, hostile trench nation. The Queendom is dotted with Aquatic Research Stations studying the unique biology of the abyss, and countless Sunken Ships from forgotten surface wars have been repurposed into fortified outposts for scavengers and mercenaries.

Hybrid habitats blend magic and nature. Entire neighborhoods exist within enormous Underwater Bubbles, each maintaining a different atmosphere to accommodate a wide array of peoples. The Gardens of Anemone are vast subaquatic agricultural biodomes, where both terrestrial and aquatic plants are cultivated under magical sunlamps, providing a crucial source of diverse foodstuffs and a reminder of life beyond the water.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Nation

Positives:

  • Supreme Security: Lumaris is arguably one of the most defensible nations in Saṃsāra. Its location makes a surface invasion nearly impossible, and its specialized military and powerful defensive magic can deter or destroy even the largest leviathans.
  • Resource Monopoly: The Queendom holds exclusive control over rare materials forged only under extreme pressure, such as abyssal pearls, refined leviathan oil, and flawless pressure-forged crystals, which are essential for creating Tier 5 gear.
  • Social Cohesion: The ever-present danger has created a highly disciplined, orderly, and unified society. Crime is low, and citizens generally work together for the common good, understanding that one person’s failure could endanger thousands.

Negatives:

  • Systemic Fragility: The entire nation’s existence depends on flawlessly maintained magic. A catastrophic failure in a city’s pressure shield or atmospheric generator would result in the instantaneous death of its entire population. This creates a constant, low-level anxiety in the populace.
  • Authoritarian Oppression: There is no concept of personal property or true freedom. The Queen’s word is absolute law, enforced by a vigilant state apparatus. Social mobility is extremely limited and largely dictated by service to the Crown.
  • Pervasive Xenophobia: Generations of isolation have fostered a deep distrust of outsiders. Trade with the surface world is heavily restricted and monitored, and Sun-Kissed visitors are often treated with suspicion and condescension.

Additional Information

  • Government and Succession: The Queendom is an absolute matriarchal monarchy. The Queen rules for life, and her eldest daughter is her sole heir. She governs through the Matriarchs’ Council, composed of the heads of the most powerful noble houses, who all swear binding magical oaths of fealty.
  • Economy: All industry and trade are state-owned. The Lumaris Treasury’s primary function is to manage the export of its unique resources and the import of essential goods from the surface, like rare woods and specialty textiles.
  • Specialized Magic: Lumaris mages are masters of abjuration, transmutation, and divination. Their “Mind’s Eye” ability often adapts to the environment, manifesting as a form of psionic sonar, an acute sense of pressure changes, or a telepathic connection with the abyss’s native creatures.
  • Immigration Policy: Lumaris actively seeks souls who remember aquatic, subterranean, or high-pressure past lives. The Crown issues “submersion quests” to such individuals on the surface, offering them citizenship and significant resources to relocate. This policy ensures a steady influx of avatars who are psychologically and spiritually suited for life in the deep.
