The Grand Arcanum Sabotage

From: Convergence of the Currents

The Hook: On the eve of the Grand Arcanum, signs of sabotage target several master arcanists set to perform. Equipment is damaged, rare components contaminated, and threats are whispered.

Behind the Schemes: This could be a simple disgruntled mage hoping to gain the spotlight, or something more sinister – a force inimical to the Convergence itself seeking to disrupt the displays of magical power.

The Race: The players must not only identify the saboteur but potentially take the sabotaged mages’ places in the Arcanum, needing to improvise impressive feats of magic with limited preparation time.

Lore Expansion

  • The Grand Arcanum’s Significance: Is this just a spectacle, or is there a deeper purpose to these demonstrations?  A testing ground for new discoveries, a way to appease beings attuned to magic, or even a form of tithe to maintain a mystical balance?
  • The Targets: Are they all rivals of the saboteur, or chosen to disrupt specific SCHOOLS of magic? Are they beloved figures (making the sabotage more shocking), or known for their arrogance (making suspicion wider-spread)?
  • The Nature of the Sabotage: Subtle contamination undermining specific spells, blatant destruction forcing improvisation, or is it psychological – threats and sleep deprivation hindering focus?
  • Whispers of the Enemy: What are the rumors? Disgruntled rivals within the Convergence, an outside force seeking to discredit the entire festival, or perhaps even jealous otherworldly entities?

Tier One Character Considerations

  • Essential Skills:
    • Arcana: Knowledge to identify the sabotage methods, and the broader magical theory to improvise solutions.
    • Investigation: Unraveling who benefits, deciphering cryptic threats, tracing evidence even within the festival’s bustle.
    • Performance/Persuasion: If forced to take center stage, having a flair for the dramatic and quick-thinking explanations helps!
  • Preparation:
    • Spell Versatility: Minor ‘utility’ spells might be lifesavers when their usual tricks aren’t an option.
    • Theatrical Flair: Having little prop components on hand helps sell the illusion of a planned performance, should the worst occur.
    • A Knack for Improvisation:  More than specific skills, these characters thrive under pressure and can think creatively with limitations.
  • Cost:
    • Reputation Risk: If forced to perform unprepared, even a valiant effort might be seen as mockery of the Grand Arcanum.
    • Missed Connections: Focus on this could mean missing out on networking with powerful mages during the festival.
    • Making Powerful Enemies: The saboteur is unlikely to just let this defeat pass unnoticed.
  • Positives:
    • Unexpected Acclaim: Success makes them the ‘heroes of the hour’, potentially eclipsing the original performers!
    • Patronage: Their quick thinking earns them influential admirers, offering support for future endeavors.
    • Festival Legends: They become known for their boldness, opening doors that might otherwise be closed to tier one characters.
  • Negatives:
    • Bitterness from the Sabotaged: Even if they uncover the culprit, lingering resentment is possible.
    • The Saboteur’s Revenge: Did they become a target of the force behind the scheme, for daring to interfere?
    • Increased Scrutiny: They’ve drawn attention…are their own methods now going to be questioned if they rise in the ranks?
  • Tags:  Intrigue, Mystery, Deadline Pressure, Improvisation as a core mechanic, Potential for both humor and high drama
  • Rewards:
    • Unique Knowledge: Access to the sabotaged rituals after the fact, learning niche and potentially controversial techniques.
    • Favor from the Masters: A grateful arcanist whose reputation was saved now owes them a significant debt.
    • The Spotlight: They’re offered a chance to present their OWN original work as part of next year’s Grand Arcanum.

Lore Twists to Consider:

  • No Single Saboteur: It’s several disgruntled mages, making the trail harder to follow, but also sowing the seeds of dissent within the festival.
  • The Force of Envy: The sabotage is fueled by a minor entity/spirit that FEEDS on negative emotions – solving the mystery weakens it.
  • Accidental Success: The players botch the investigation BUT their improvised performance is genuinely groundbreaking new magic!

Guide-Manager outline for running “The Grand Arcanum Sabotage”, blending intrigue with a sudden shift to improvisational spotlights:

  • Step 1: The Sabotage is Revealed
    • Setup: Chaos on the eve of the Arcanum! Equipment breaks mysteriously, a reclusive mage withdraws in panic, an irreplaceable component goes missing.
    • Skill Opportunities: Investigation to uncover the nature of the sabotage, Arcana to deduce who’d use such methods, Insight to read the victim’s reactions.
    • Variation: The players witness an act of sabotage firsthand, gaining a glimpse of the culprit but putting themselves at risk.
  • Step 2: Rumors and Suspicion
    • Setup: News spreads fast. Everyone from renowned masters to eager apprentices has a theory on the motive and perpetrator.
    • Skill Opportunities: Social maneuvering to cut through the gossip, discreet inquiries, and sensing who’s being truthful vs furthering their own agenda.
    • Variation: They’re falsely accused! They must clear their names WHILE finding the true perpetrator.
  • Step 3: Tracing the Clues
    • Setup: A cryptic note hinting at more sabotage, residue of a rare potion on damaged gear, or whispers of threats…
    • Skill Opportunities: More investigation, tracking shipments of rare components, even deciphering coded threats if the saboteur is being theatrical.
    • Variation: Each clue leads to an escalating act of sabotage, forcing them to put out fires while seeking the source.
  • Step 4: Unmasking the Saboteur
    • Setup: The evidence paints a picture – jealous rival, an extremist faction, or someone with an even more unexpected motive.
    • Skill Opportunities: Social confrontation potentially outing the culprit. This could be at a scholarly debate, a tense backstage meeting, etc.
    • Variation: They ID the culprit too late! The Arcanum is about to start, the players still need to step in…
  • Step 5: The Pressure’s On
    • Setup: The sabotaged mages are desperate. Organizers plead with the players – can they salvage this with improvisation?
    • Decision Point: A major choice: expose the culprit publicly (risking the whole Arcanum collapsing), or take the heat and bluff their way through.
    • Variation: They have time for ONE improvised ritual, making the choice of which sabotaged mage to ‘replace’ even more difficult.
  • Step 6: Taking Center Stage
    • Setup: The crowd is expectant. It’s time to think fast, adapting their knowledge on the fly.
    • Mechanics: Less about die rolls, more about narrative. Quickfire Q&A with you, the GM, about their magical focus, preferred spell types, etc.
    • Variation: Each successful ‘trick’ fuels the crowd’s enthusiasm, buying them time to pull off something truly impressive.
  • Step 7: The Grand Deception
    • Setup: They need a showstopper! This is about playing to their strengths AND the crowd’s expectations.
    • Skill Opportunities: Performance to sell the illusion, Arcana to weave something visually impressive even if its deeper purpose is disguised.
    • Variation: They can recruit help – a sympathetic fellow mage lending a component, a skilled illusionist for misdirection.
  • Step 8: The Aftermath
    • Success or Failure: Did they salvage the reputation of the Arcanum, even if it wasn’t what was planned? Reactions are diverse!
    • The Saboteur’s Fate: If exposed, is there public humiliation? Do they escape, leaving a lingering threat?
    • New Opportunities: Acclaim opens doors, BUT they also gained notoriety – is everyone who approaches them now trustworthy?
  • Step 9:  Loose Ends
    • Lingering Mystery: Was this sabotage a single act, or did the players just scratch the surface of a darker conspiracy?
