Grand Conclave of Appraisal

Lore: In this magical world where objects themselves hold power, the ability to accurately discern those hidden properties is paramount. The Grand Conclave began as a gathering of master appraisers, comparing techniques and knowledge.  Over time, it morphed into a celebration of discovery, attracting adventurers, collectors, and those simply curious about the potential riches hidden within their possessions.

Organizers: A loose coalition of the most revered Appraiser Guilds across Saṃsāra sponsor and manage the Conclave.  While rivalries exist, the festival holds a truce, focusing on the shared pursuit of knowledge.

Attendance: Thousands flock to the Conclave. Renowned appraisers, wealthy patrons hoping to identify treasures, merchants looking for a bargain, and the simply curious make up the crowds.

Time of Year: Held during the height of a mild season, typically late spring or early autumn, for comfortable outdoor gatherings.

Party: The Grand Conclave culminates in a lavish masquerade ball.  Masks and elaborate costumes display wealth and craftsmanship, creating a fantastical atmosphere of secret identities and intrigue.

    • The Twist: The artifact IS real, but cursed. It subtly skews appraisal results, making other potential treasures appear worthless and diverting suspicion.
    • Adventure Path: The adventurers must discern the curse, track down its origins (potentially involving disgruntled rivals or vengeful spirits), and find a way to break it in time for the auction.
  • The Appraisal Duel
    • The Hook: A renowned but arrogant master appraiser insults the adventurers’ abilities upon their arrival at the Conclave. This escalates into a public challenge – an appraisal duel where reputations are on the line.
    • The Twist: The rival appraiser secretly uses illicit artifacts or methods to gain an unfair advantage.
    • Adventure Path: The players must quickly uncover their opponent’s deception while simultaneously appraising a series of increasingly complex objects, potentially exposing a wider conspiracy within the appraisal guilds.
  • The Stolen Knowledge
    • The Hook: On the eve of the Conclave, a famous scholar’s tent is ransacked, their groundbreaking treatise on a new appraisal technique stolen.
    • The Twist: The thieves aren’t after money; they seek to suppress this knowledge to maintain an advantage in the cutthroat world of treasure hunting.
    • Adventure Path: The players must track the thieves, potentially navigating the festival’s underworld of smugglers and information brokers, and recover the treatise before the Conclave begins and the knowledge is lost or exploited.
  • The Awakened Artifact
    • The Hook: Mid-festival, a seemingly ordinary object on display suddenly exhibits strange magical properties. Panicked whispers of a dangerous, sentient artifact spread.
    • The Twist: The artifact isn’t malevolent, but newly awakened and confused. It might hold immense power, but also poses an unpredictable risk.
    • Adventure Path: The players must communicate with the artifact, discern its origins and nature, and decide its fate: secure containment, responsible guidance, or potential exploitation for personal gain (with all the moral dilemmas that entails).
